(re)Watching Magia Record S1 - part 1
Hello and welcome everyone to the first post on this watch-along commentary of the first season of Magia Record! Whether you are just now watching it for the first time, or are re-watching in preparation for the second season, or have only played the game and are curious about the anime (in which case I'd be surprised you even exist) I hope you can have some fun reading these ramblings as I try to put my thoughts into words (actually turned more into narrating the show) throughout all 12 13 episodes.
Before we can get to it, though, I have a few warnings to give:
1 - As much as I'd love to be able to memory swipe so I can watch this fresh all over again, such an ability is sadly still beyond my grasp. In other words, this isn't my first time watching (or second, for that matter; more like the sixth⊠or seventhâŠ). That being the case I can't claim that these are my first impressions and it's very likely this commentary will be somewhat biased by my previous knowledge. However, I can guarantee one thing: I will do my best to keep this spoiler-free, so you don't have to worry if this is your first time watching.
(I will, however, be assuming that you have watched the OG series and Rebellion, so beware of that).
2 - Please don't come into this expecting it to be Madoka 2
Also no, this is not a continuation of the OG, itâs an alternate universe spin-off.
This one's for first-time viewers.
Well, ok, this sounds like vague tweeting and I'm kind of whining here, but I have seen a number of peeps on the internet saying that Magia Record is bad only for their argument to boil down to "because it isn't OG Madoka!"
Yeah it isn't. I'm pretty sure there's "Side Story" written somewhere in the title too.
Leaving aside the matter of nostalgia glasses and whether the original series was that much of a masterpiece or not (it's been over five years since I last watched it, so I can't say anything either way.) it seems kind of weird to me that someone would bash a spinoff on the grounds of how close it is to the original. Because here's the thing: to me, the whole point of spinoffs is taking an already existing scenario and putting a spin on it to make something new. That's exactly what makes them fun!
MagiReco didn't need to be a Madoka clone or to try hard and beat the original. That would probably have made it bad, actually. What it did need to do was to create an interesting story using the world set up by the OG Madoka and the other spinoffs, and that, in my opinion, it did, so I hope people can give it a chance and judge it on its own merits rather than only compared to the original. I'm not saying you can't hate it, either, I myself have my own problems with it, it's just that I want to see more reasonable reasons than "it's not the OG so it's bad".
3 - As you can probably already tell from these warnings, these posts are bound to get looong, so I'd recommend setting aside a fair amount of time and getting real comfy if you're gonna read it all. I also don't mind if you just skip ahead and only read the interesting parts, I'm not the internet police.
3.5 - I don't want to use it as an excuse, but I think I should make it clear that English is not my native language, so I apologize in advance for any mistakes and awkward/stilted text. It's hard to tell by myself, so feel free to correct me if you find something.
SO, with that out of the way letâs get down to whatâs really important:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record Episode 1
Whew, now thatâs a mouthful.
You know, in my mind I always thought a âside storyâ was something that happened alongside a âmain storyâ, like another POV, so Iâm not sure thatâs the most appropriate title, but who am I to judge?
So here we go, weâre off with some beautiful futuristic scenery already, thatâs the Madoka series I know.
As the classic Sis Puella Magi plays in the background, two unseen narrators tell us the tale of the so called âmagical girlsâ as we are shown the reality of being one, meeting our first witch for this series.
Risking your life to save a cat doesnât seem like the smartest of things. Rather, witches eat cats? Thatâs mean.
No, you really, really donât. This narration definitely seems made to make everyone who saw the original say this, particularly with how silly are the wishes these girls suggest.Â
And hey, look, even this girl who supposedly had her wish granted doesnât seem very happy.
Hang in there, this is only the first episode.
Man, this scenery really is pretty though.
After an exciting fight with a witch in the train, our girl here silently goes home to find
Whatever the heck this is.
So, our girl here seems to be having strange visions whenever she enters her room, that is very very suspiciously cut exactly in half. Protagonist, you sure have an unique sense of interior decoration.
She goes on with her day, makes two lunchboxes and⊠oh, it seems sheâs all alone.
Is this something you should be telling your own daughter?
Long story short, Irohaâs parents are abroad right now (as is suspiciously the case with many a anime protagonist parents). I actually love the parallel this scene draws with OG Madoka: whereas Madokaâs parents seem responsible and Madoka even looks up to her mom and theyâre a happy united family, Iroha comes off as being the responsible one in her family and her parents are gone from the get-go. This way, the lonely atmosphere of the previous scene also starts making sense.
So, it seems like thereâs something Iroha wants to do here, and thatâs why she decided to stay behind.
Perhaps. Did you wish to save a black cat?
Wow, this teacher is speaking fast. Calm down lady, weâre not here to speedrun the content, geez. Though I guess we should be happy sheâs at least giving a proper class, unlike a certain other teacherâŠ
Oh great, it's this guy.
Ok, Iroha doesnât remember what she wished for and Kyuubei doesnât know either, although he knows she used her wish for the sake of someone. Kyuubei theorizes that the reason she doesnât remember might be that not remembering was part of her wish, but Iroha doesnât think sheâd wish for that. I donât think youâd ever think to wish for something like that until you had to wish for something like that though.
Sheâs got a fair point. After all, wishing in this universe is basicaâ the heck is going on in the background there?! O-kaaayâŠ
Iroha was having a weird think-spot mental conversation with Kyuubei there, and missed speedrun teacherâs lecture entirely. Being meguca is suffering.
We get some school motto propaganda, and now weâre on the roof. Oh? Where did all the friendship stuff from the propaganda go? Seems like Irohaâs not following the school spirit. Unless she considers the white weasel a friend, so thatâs why she gave him her extra⊠wait, Kyuubei can EAT? I thought he was some alien machine-like being. H-Huh...
Classmate A: Tamaki-san, maji tenshi!
Sheâs probably just shy. According to her classmates, Iroha used to be busy doing something or the other, but no one can remember what that is.
Cute.Â
But maybe donât do that somewhere someone could easily walk in on you, Iroha.
Iroha gets a call by the girl from the combat scene from before, whose name is Kuroe. I couldnât tell from their conversation if theyâve known each other for a while or if they just met each other for the first time in the fight before.
On the train, although sheâs the one who called her over, Kuroe remains silent. Iroha, clearly uncomfortable, tries her best to make conversation. Poor Iroha, I know the feeling.
We learn from her that the number of witches around has been decreasing. She comments that being unable to get Grief Seeds is troubling, but itâs better than having witches causing trouble. Poor girl has no way to know just how much of a bad news it is running out of Grief Seeds.
Whatâs with pink-haired girls and lacking self-esteem? Iroha, are you sure you didnât wish to save a black and forget that you did? You did save a white one just before.
Kuroe finally decides to talk, and she tells us this:
If you go to Kamihama, youâll be saved. To anyone that saw the OG, the first thought that comes to mind is that theyâll be saved from their destiny of turning into witches, but it seems Kuroe doesnât know the truth yet. She just doesnât want to fight witches anymore. I think.
The train lights up, andâŠ
...this is extremely unsettling considering the truth about witches and the conversation theyâre having right now. Thereâs a lot of this, but this just hits different having watched the original.
Irohaâs not inclined to believe what Kuroeâs saying. Of course, despite not remembering her wish, sheâs the type thatâs happy with fighting witches if she can save someone, and Kuroeâs not being very convincing either. The whole thing is apparently a rumor spread by some girls who saw a dream that told them that.
Except that Kuroe actually had the dream too.
Like most magical girls, Kuroe made a short-sighted wish, and regrets it. She now wants to be saved, so sheâs going to Kamihama.
...or she was, but before that, theyâll have to defeat the witch they let escape the other day, âcos sheâs back for more.
I actually have so many questions about this scene. Werenât Labyrinths pocket dimensions? How come this oneâs moving in physical space? We know witches themselves move and their Labyrinth goes with that, but I thought it was more, like, the entrance to the Labyrinth moves. Then how come witches can escape if magical girls get carried with their Labyrinth when they moveâŠ? Just... just... what?
The answer to all of that is probably âmagicâ.
Like that, Express Witch Labyrinth crashes right into what seems to be a train station. Labyrinths donât have brakes, confirmed.
Brutal.
Looks like itâs not only magical girls who have territorial disputes going on. Although itâs nice that they wonât have to fight two witches at the same time, this is not exactly a relief when you consider these two were already struggling with the previous one, and this one just ripped it apart like crab.
As expected, Irohaâs arrows do no damage at all. When all seems lostâŠ
A wild singing mini Kyuubei appears! Is this a shiny?
The singing Kyuubei distracts the witch and jumps towards Iroha, who uses her pro white cat catching skills to grab it, and⊠something happens. Whatever this Kyuubei did, Irohaâs having some flashbacks now. Sadly, the middle of a battle isnât the best time to be having a BSOD and, despite Kuroeâs attempts to snap her out of it, theyâre sitting ducks right now, a black and a white one.
Thankfully for them, though, theyâre not alone in this barrier. This mystery blue haired girl spams flying spears and makes short work of the witch Irohaâs arrows didnât even scratch earlier. Sheâs clearly at a whole ânother level.
Also, chibi Kyuubeiâs gone. Totally not suspicious. Nope. Not at all.
So, from this OP miss get-the-heck-out-of-my-territory, who didnât even bother saying her name, we learn that not only there is no salvation in Kamihama, there are more, stronger witches, and there are currently no Kyuubei. She gives them the Grief Seeds from the two witches before, and passes on a warning to them. Not the friendliest of magical girls. Though if you consider what happens when you run out of Grief Seeds, one could understand why itâd be undesirable having too many magical girls in the same place.
With this, Iroha and Kuroe take the train back to their town and things are totally awkward again.
Welp, seems like Kuroe doesnât want to chat anymore, so weâll have a dream sequence instead.
Forgive my lack of words, but this scene doesnât need them. This is just⊠you couldnât ask for a better representation of what being a magical girl wishing for salvation is like. Everyone has their own reasons, but in the end, having known despair, these girls are desperately clinging to this last hope called Kamihama. Itâs almost a pilgrimage.
âLetâs go to Kamihama. Weâll be saved thereâ
And in the midst of all that is the mysterious girl from Irohaâs dreams.
(the track here, Paradero de Memoria, is also great btw)
Now, with various wishes written all over in the background, we get Kyuubeiâs spiel about magical girls. I think this is word-by-word the same from the original too.
We now get to finally know what our protagonistâs wish was.
So Iroha wished to cure her younger sisterâs illness, but the sister in question is now nowhere to be found. Worse: everything related to her is gone. Even Iroha, who made a wish for her sake, didnât remember her existence until now. Oh man, thatâs no normal disappearance. What happened? Guess thatâs what Iroha will have to find out now.
With that, we conclude the first episode of Magia Record(âs s1)!
This is a really strong first episode in my opinion. It decently introduces our protagonist, sets up the mysteries we will be dealing with from here on and also manages to trace connections with the original, while using the viewerâs previous knowledge to give a whole different impression to some scenes. You wouldnât be like âhell noâ at the rumor there at the start if you didnât know the truth about magical girls, and I doubt that final scene would hit that hard either. Itâs just really good at this and itâll continue doing that from now on. I love it.
Speaking of the final scene, me having watched the original over five years ago might also be part of it but that is really my favorite scene in Madoka overall. I just really really love that scene. (Seriously, Iâve watched this scene so many times I know it by heart now. Help.)
Alas, I lied, the episodeâs not over yet, we still have our classic anime first episode ending-opening to watch. So letâs listen, to Gomakashi:
This logoâs real pretty.
So yeah, pretty standard anime opening. If you pay attention, there are some references to Connect too, what with the selfcest and whatnot. Although I managed to mistake this when I first watched, this oneâs actually sung by the trio TrySail rather than ClariS. Thatâs the VAs for Iroha, Asakura Momo; Yachiyo (the get-out-of-my-territory girl), Amamiya Sora and Natsukawa Shiina, whose character weâve yet to meet. TrySail has a lot of cool songs, so do check them out if you havenât already. (free ad)
This time, in fact, the episode is over! Whew, I did say this was going to be long, but not even I thought itâd be this long. By the time this is posted I should have a backlog of these, so my plan is to post one everyday until we are done. I hope you had fun reading this here rant and Iâll be looking forward to meeting you guys again tomorrow, same place, maybe same hour, so we can go on and watch episode 2 together!
(P.S.: I am considering doing a series of posts at a later date comparing the anime to the game, but weâll see. The first few chapters are fine, but the game is stupidly long, so I feel itâd take a lot of motivation and stamina Iâm not sure I have at the moment. Thereâs also the possibility watching the first arc again would bring back my yt copy-apocalipse grief back and thatâd suck, definitely donât wanna go through that again.)

I haven't written much about what I've been up to lately, so here's some word salad updates~ đ„
NijiGaku Anime
So I started watching the new LL. I hadn't been keeping up with SIFAS' story, but I did read some of it when it first came out. I gotta say, I'm really enjoying all of the changes they decided to make for the anime version of the story, to both the characters and story. It's starting to feel like something coherent. The story in the game was ok, but the main thing that interested me was the interactions with Muse and Aqours, overshadowing the actual "plot" and even Nijigasaki themselves. But the anime really made me interested and excited about the story and characters again. I would be a little annoyed about the personality and dynamic changes, but honestly, I'm used to it by now. LL always ends up doing this sort of thing, and the personalities only seem to become solidified after the anime airs.
A little disappointed in Kasumi's change in some vague ways I don't really feel like describing, but honestly it balances out because Ayumu is fantastic now (previously one of my least cared for of the group.) Yu's personality is surprisingly super gay fun and I'm really excited for her and Ayumu's dynamic in particular. They're so cute. Seriously feel like I'm gonna ship them hard.
I also really like Rina's initial personality in this. Not only is she bad at expressing emotions through her face, but she also seems bad at expressing them through words too. I feel like this is gonna be much more interesting than her already being cutesy and genki like in the promo stuff and SIFAS.
When Karin was first shown, I had mixed feelings. At first I was like oh god I'm gay and she's beautiful. But the whole sexuality flaunting thing kind of put me off for several reasons I don't really wanna get into explaining. I really didn't know how to feel. I started liking her a little more during SIFAS, when she competed against Muse in DDR and lost... started feeling like I was getting a glimpse of her real personality without the whole sexy idol persona. Although not much has happened in the anime with her yet, she's giving me Nozomi vibes and I love it. I actually think if I had gone into this without previous knowledge of the characters, I'd be betting she'd become my fave for sure.
My list has gone from Kasumi > Rina > Kanata / Emma > Karin > Ai > Setsuna > Ayumu > Shizuku to Yuu > Ayumu > Kasumi / Karin > Rina > Kanata / Emma > Ai > Setsuna > Shizuku
Still biased a bit towards characters that have shown up more in the first two eps, so it'll undoubtedly change. But It's really interesting how much the characters I already felt I had good placements for changed so much.
Edit for episode 3, because I didn't post this fast enough. Student council speedrun was fantastic. Yu continues to be incredibly gay. I wonder how this episode will affect the ships people will gravitate towards. LL has always been a fairly monoship fandom, heavily gravitating towards specific pairs. Of course that's largely the fault of canon itself, often pushing and developing single ships. Well, I suppose we saw a big change with Aqours, though, especially with season two. But even then, the ships tended to stay at least between girls of the same year (aside from my rarepair, shout-out to YohaRiko.) Now, I wonder. From the very beginning, before Yu even had a name, it felt like they were really pushing the shippy stuff @ the viewer. I wonder if thatâs still gonna be the angle. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it yet. I really want to see more YuAyu rather than YuSetsu, but I can't really be mad at more gay content unless they try to make it a DEEP story and then fail to resolve it but haha they'd NEVER do that, I'm sure!!
As for the others... I'm guessing they're gonna push RinAi, KarinEmma, YuuKasu, and maybe YuuShizu? My original guesses were that AiKarin would be a thing, evoking NozoEli v3. But I guess that'd be too predictable a third time. KarinEmma sounds like it could be cute and sweet, RinAi feels like it has adorable potential, and YuKasu vs. YuAyu sounds like it could have some good comedic rival-y potential, given they don't make Kasumi super serious about it and make it really angsty. Not that a cute idol show would ever do such a thing haha!!!!!
Higurashi Gou
Also started Higurashi. I doubt many people know this, but I used to be a major Higurashi fan before I got into Touhou. It was my main "fandom" I guess, even though there wasn't really that much of a fandom to interact with comparatively. Anyway, despite that, I didn't think I'd get into this remake super hard... but I'm really loving it so far. The art style is really pretty and eye candy, and it turns out it's a direct continuation of the story rather than a remake. Very excited to see where it's going, and also to see a lot of my baby Rena again.
An interesting difference to me as I'm rewatching are my feelings for Keiichi. While I don't hate him, over the years I've really grown tired of the generic male leads (especially in harem anime) like him. Of course, he's definitely not AS generic as they come, or maybe perhaps that's just my bias from when I used to really like him. The me back then found him unique enough to stand beside the girls. Nowadays, I definitely can't say the same. At least he doesn't grate on my nerves as much as most other harem anime protags do, however. I feel like despite lacking the quirks that make the girls so likeable and unique, he still has something going for him... perhaps the fact he's framed as inherently different from everyone else, because he comes from the city, and the way he acts a bit more realistically to the scary things that are happening. Although those things are obviously explained away later, at least for now I still accept him for what he is, old bias or not.
Genshin Impact
Been playing Genshin Impact religiously and loved every second of it. Though I've caught up with the main story content, so sadly it's slowed down. I'd never heard of this game before it came out, so I was absolutely wowed that such a game was f2p. I've heard a lot of people criticizing it because they added gacha in at the last minute, and I definitely understand being annoyed through the pov of someone who was anticipating it. But part of me is still really thankful that the game is free at all. I suppose that full but paid 60 dollar game would still be a better experience, but because of my non-existent budget situation, I may not have ended up playing it at all.
Aside from the arguably shitty monetization practices, however, the game is fantastic. It really is as similar to BoTW as people have mentioned, and I really appreciate that. BoTW, from a gameplay standpoint, is absolutely my favorite game. It's exactly what I want from any given game. So I really appreciated this. The story and characters of Genshin are also really interesting. I really like Qiqi, Venti, Fischl, and Xingqiu, among others. I spent a while rerolling for Qiqi or Venti 5*s, and eventually got an account with Qiqi. Venti on the other hand I've been trying to roll for but sadly haven't gotten. I have 1 roll left before the banner ends, so hopefully.. My friends whaled him for me. I swear I tried to stop them! I owe them my soul...
HoloLive, Pikamee & Vtubing
I briefly started getting into HoloLive a little while ago. After the Aloe stuff, I started worrying a bit about how the company handles these situations as well as the girls' freedoms and how much of their donation money they actually get.. (I made a post about it a while back.) After a while my worries died down a bit, but then came back full force with the Coco and Haachama situation. After that and one too many uncomfortable sexual jokes, I decided to just distance myself from HL. It's a shame, because I really enjoyed their personalities, but it was making me feel uncomfortable more often than not.
I told myself itâs fine, Iâve got Pikamee if I ever feel like watching vtubers again. And then like a week later... Well, itâs not really something I wanna talk about here, but she made some posts on twitter that made me too uncomfortable to continue watching her either.
On a much lighter note... A friend of mine showed us how to use prprlive and facerig to use the Touhou CB Live2D models, and Asa and I played around with Mokou, Kaguya, and Lyricaâs. It was quite fun, and I do look forward to using the Kaguya one for private streams on one of my servers. Iâve actually always wanted to try out vtubing stuff myself, but not really publicly. Of course, the costs for getting a model drawn and made specifically for me are too much for something Iâm not really committing to, so this is perfect. Iâm excited~
Touhou Cannonball & Kagura Thoughts
Itâs been a long time since I talked about Touhou CB on my blog, and Iâm pretty sure I left things on a pretty bad note. Mainly dissatisfied with Mokouâs portrayal for pretty shallow reasons on my part, despite they game having just started and having a lot of room to grow. And grow it did. While I quit pretty early in because of that, Asa decided to take over my account. She realized that it was pretty easy to upgrade any given character you had to a 5* without having to rely much on the gacha. She ended up playing a lot with the goal of upgrading everyone we had. I came back to it around July and actually had a lot of fun with it. The cast had gotten much bigger and we really enjoyed playing on multiplayer. It wasn't the best game ever from a gameplay standpoint, but it definitely had it's charm. The announcement of its death, although unsurprising, came at the worst time. Asa and I actually cried a little when we saw the announcement, ngl. The game had such good, wholesome, Touhouy vibes to it. Nonetheless, we made the most out of the last month or so after the announcement. We played a LOT of multiplayer and had a lot of really cute and good interactions with other players. Near the end, we realized that Lyrica was the only character from the normal banner we were missing, so we grinded like crazy (mostly Asa) to try to get her... we ended up getting a number of 5*s but none Lyrica... she eluded us to the very end. It was quite sad, but how hard we worked for it still felt satisfying somehow. We were able to max out our multiplayer level and complete a ton of goals we wouldnât have otherwise.
So after this bittersweet experience with Touhou gacha, and all the scummy things I've been hearing about Lost Word, I've been thinking like... I'm done with Touhou gacha, at least for now. Don't wanna hear anything else about it for a good while. And then the 25th anniversary hits and they announce Kagura. Ugh. Please, give me a break. Needless to say, I'm gonna have to give it a try. Touhou is my life, I love rhythm games, I love Touhou music, and I love character collecting games. And I've been waiting for something to replace SIF gameplay in my heart for a long time. I'd banked my hopes on SIFAS but it's really barely a rhythm game so.... at least now that I've gone through CB's death and seen how cruddy LW is, I'll have lower standards and not get my hopes up too high.
If you got this far, thanks for reading my rambles and have a good day~
#loritalk#super long im sorry#there's even more stuff i wanted to talk about but it was already long enough as it is

Itâs entirely possible, should the book exist in universe.
It would also make sense for Dio to be dangerously well read, given his whole goal is to be a judge initially. His plan involved quite a lot of him schmoozing/winning over people with his charisma without actually caring much about them-- and trivia from books popular with the upper class goes a long, long way in that. Seeing himself in the Count wouldnât be wild to imagine either, given a frankly surprising number of people do.
It would also explain the lack of er. lizard fashion climbing, since jjba vamps just kinda... donât do that. Dio kicking his feet through the wall to walk up it might well have been an attempt to copy that. Attempting to emulate the Count might also be why the chimera exist in his castle-- he saw Draculas slower pace of experimenting [Van Helsing saying heâs experimenting like a child could be read as being slow to try things] as a character flaw and sought to speedrun it a bit. After all, Count Dracula had a whole magic education with the devil to get his weather control etc before he was un-dead, and Dio just put on a mask. Heâd be aware that he was lacking a certain element of education and would seek to bolster his new abilities with HIS previous education. Namely anatomy and the like, as he was being educated like a young man of nobility and the sciences were paramount even if you werenât going to be a doctor. Thus the weird human/animal and animal/animal combos wandering around. The necromancy could likewise be influenced by the practice of just yoinking dead bodies For Science-- he just posed the question of how far back you can go and still get results.
And for all the times i do call him short-sighted, had Dio not been being persued by Jonathan and co, he might well have done very well for himself. He let his fiends loose on the village, true, but no word got out about that. A town could simply have fallen off the map, he could have went âhm fewer ravenous undead, more people to fear and look upon me in aweâ and done a rather good campaign for people to move into the abandoned houses. Heâs one of the few remaining Joestars, after all--gritted teeth about using the name aside--and could well insist heâd obtained the land just in time for a sickness to have torn through the area. And so long as no one went to check, other people of standing would be fine with that explanation. Not to mention people willing to move in for money and a chance to have their own land. Then its just a matter of him remembering not to go hogwild on the populace, which is a STRETCH for Dio but without 100 years at the bottom of the ocean he might eventually figure out. Then its just a matter of gloating to himself about being better at being the Count than the count was.
Granted this would require his short sighted nature to calm down, since his stated goal becomes âtake over the worldâ at some point. A thing like the above would require patience, which Dio as a character generally lacks beyond a certain point. If he could content himself with simply... slowly accruing land via mundane means, passing his titles to himself as time went on etc, he could easily seat himself as the most powerful men in the world. The problem is he wants things NOW and SOON and ASAP. He understands things taking time, his planning for killing George shows that and his use of minions, but he likes definitive end goals and times.Â
... ok i had coffee so this got long, but ye basically Dio kinned Dracula too hard OR he went #same and thought he could do better, but he lacks the actual ability to have patience/the luxury of living in a remote area where he can just zone the fuck out for a few centuries while puttering around and learning what he can do. Because heâs a showoff.
Up at 5am pondering Jjba Phantom Blood as a dracula adaptation.
Because it absolutely is, just with the prejudices of Victorian england replaced by whatever the fuck Araki is on most the time. Because its Something but idk what to call it.
Brain deeply focused on the fact Dio plays up the "fuck around and find out" aspect of the Count, Jonathan is more Mina in terms of emotions/forgiving Dio in the end. I maintain Erina didmt have a Jonathan Harker arc expressly because she was in India for a good chunk of time and then was left out-- like mina in the books.
Deeply amused by Speedwagon and Zeppeli being an amalgamation of the suitors and just... italian van Helsing.... when there is no Lucy.
Unless Jojo losing his body to Dio counts as part of Lucy's thing. Hm.
All that said, the corrupting influence isn't INITIALLY Dio himself-- hes just an asshole. The mask is what claims his humanity, that he willingly gives up... with like. No assurance it wouldn't turn him into some mindless monster. Thus the fucking around, and missing the opportunity for lizard fashion.
Theres also an argument that the book Dracula came out toward the time he was finishing his law studies and he got Really into the wrong part of the story. Just full on "the mask could make me like the Count, but I'm english and Better so it'll be fine."
That or he knocked out becoming a solicitor and was moving onto "time for Hawkins/George Joestar to die and give me Money and Power"
Basically its 5am and I'm awake enough to point at the parallels but not enough to be coherent
