Hello (rambling fic rec) (nonsensical, i just had to say this stuff)

Yesterday Upon a Stair is so??? ITS SO GOOD. It’s been like two weeks since I last read a chapter but I marathoned ch1-ch40 and it was wonderful. The tone is just so eerie and creepy and foreboding aND ITS SO WELL DONE. I love the execution of queerplatonic tododeku (it’s natural and wonderful and just so good) and the changes to Deku’s character like??? The AU has purpose beyond just “oh he can see ghosts” like IT HAS AN IMPACT ON WHO HE IS AND WHAT HE DOES AND IT --

Just.

Yall I could go on for days. I don’t want to ramble too much b/c it’s been so long since I’ve read it but it’s so good and Imma finish it at Some Point. It’s a distinct story that establishes its own identity separate (but still within canon) from the original series and honestly reads like a novel and I love it so goddamn much.

On the topic of MHA, The curse of the anime protagonist and Erased Potential are also amazing. I also haven’t finished them *cough* was not kidding about the “reading twelve fics at once”. 

The curse of the anime protagonist is (w/o saying spoilers) basically an apathetic Deku who has the perfect quirk for being a hero (kinda, but its only so good b/c he takes advantage of it) but for (SPOILERS) Reasons he doesn’t want to be a hero. It’s played up for humor (with a shocking amount of well executed drama/internal conflict and appealingly written oc buddies). I haven’t gotten super far into it so that’s all I got, but I neeeeeeeeed to read more of it b/c its so good so far.

Lemme just say, also. The line “It’s not your fault,” when Midoriya is talking w/All Might about OFA absolutely made me cry. It applies to so much of his character and who he is and the story in general and I DONT WANT TO GIVE SPOILERS BUT THERES SO MUCH WEIGHT IN THAT LINE I CANNOT EXPLAIN ITS im crying okay okay okay

Erased Potential. Yall. It’s everything I ever wanted out of MHA. Like-- Deku. No quirk Deku. Legitimately, no quirk, independent, struggling but succeeding hero Deku. 

I was so disappointed when I first watched MHA and saw Deku got a quirk b/c it felt like he was giving up-- that he was agreeing with all the people who always apologized and told him he could never be a hero and succeed in his dreams. It felt like a submission.

Even if it was realistic, and the show may deserve more praise for being brave enough to admit that, it still bothered me. Yes, Deku would’ve never been the hero he is without himself, but he never has a chance to realize his own strength, I feel like. He never believes that quirkless Deku has power. It’s somewhat of a tragedy-- one that Erased Potential not only addresses realistically and thoroughly, but in an interesting manner with events happening (which is sososo wonderful, to have things happening) as Deku struggles to 1) realize his own power, 2) become confident with that, and 3) establish himself as a hero (?? That one’s a guess, I haven’t finished it yet!). I really want to finish this one, too.

Outside of MHA--  Detective Conan and Magic Kaito. I’m obsessed. 

I’ve been reading so many of Luna Darkside’s oneshots on ff.net. They’re just. So good and sweet and most of them are romcoms but I LOVE ROMCOM SHH (some of them are angsty/drama too, if you’re into that)

What can I say? They’re well written. Just. Go read ‘em. Most of them are kaishin and it’s well written so so so well written. I literally spent like three hours last night just reading them . They’re so satisfying and cute and simply-- Delightful. 

Sky Colored Eyes. (ff.net). Good. Quality. Noice.

I loved. I loved it. It had nuance, clear themes, nice character interactions and dynamics-- it is quite well written, as well. I’d like to revisit it one day, I just. as I approached ch20+ it seemed like the characters’ thoughts began to explain the themes a little too clearly. I enjoyed what I read of the fic, and I’d like to go back and reread it at some point, but I just struggled to enjoy it as it felt like the author was talking more than the characters. 

The story’s really about Shinichi realizing his own identity post-Conan and post-antidote. W/o giving too much away, he finds out that the life he’d been chasing after for the past ~two years is not what he thought it was-- that “Shinichi” was no longer him and his friends no longer them. It’s really cool, actually, and there’s a bunch of metaphors (*cough, the entire reviving dead ppl thing*) reflective of his journey as he finds his new identity. Specifically, Kaito helps him realize this. There’s lots of good figurative language and subtle mirrors of Shinichi’s situation, I just wish some of them were a little more subtle, or less plentiful. After twenty chapters, it just felt like the same themes were being repeated, pretending to be subtle when I already knew what they were. I do genuinely appreciate how well done and clearly thought out the beginning was, though, don’t devalue that. I mention this fic because it is worth the attention.

Next on my mind is Lucid Dreams. (ff.net) I’ve reread this fic like five times, actually. It’s-- it’s just good and quality and satisfying and well paced and absolutely delightful. It might be kaishin fluff with PTSD and frankly absolutely entertaining interactions between Kaito and Shinichi (and all the other characters)-- wait these are all positive things

Read it. Also read (Not) Supernatural. Basically, side effects of antidote = what appear to be vampiric tendencies + Kaito and Haibara bein lil shits + lowkey chaotic (and occasionally unsteady) Shinichi (as he should be) = Chaos. Wonderful Chaos. I appreciate that neither Shinichi nor Kaito are unflappable.

Aight. Sorry for rambling, I’ll be more coherent in the future (most likely). I just spent the past hour or so scrolling through tags and posts and it’s-- it’s actually kind of insane to see people who read fic and make art for this stuff. Most people I know thinks it’s weird. It’s nice to see people who like things like this and who see the value in it. 

(No but seriously, apparently the Detective Conan fandom is alive??? And like, thriving?? Why was I not aware of this?)
