Hello supernatural fandom ! I just started supernatural and I am currently on season 3. I've been struggling with finding a topic for my bachelor in media science (Medienwissenschaft). I had an idea to analyse the depiction of masculinity (in Sam and Dean), which has been done a lot, but I thought I could compare Season 1 and the last, most recent one, to see if the depiction has changed. Now I haven't seen the last season yet and don't want to spoil it, if it's not worth it, so my question: is there even any change ? (Things like: do they show more emotions, are they less closed off and is Dean less of a womaniser?) I'm curious and appreciate any input! Thanks :)

To establish credibility and trust, I will interview the higher ups at a specific industry to  

expand my knowledge on a topic. They know much more than me and have more years of  

training. Furthermore, I will be upfront about my online experiences, my strengths, weaknesses, 

and how I can improve in the future. I need to evaluate my past mistakes in an effort to avoid  

them. I should be conscious of how I am viewed. After all, judgement comes from every side.

In regard to my online reputation management efforts, I want to accurately analyze my audience to create the most appropriate content. Moreover, I want to cater to everyone’s needs and interests. It is now time to analyze my personal online reputation. First, let us analyze my Facebook bio. I declared myself as a young college graduate who dreams of acting. When it comes social media, the word ‘traffic’ refers to how many clicks you receive. On YouTube, I have a fair number of views on my videos, but only one subscriber. However, my traffic on Facebook is overall steady. I used to post videos once every week, but I slowed down recently. I cannot report on my Twitter presence, because that account is all but dead.  

How many mentions on your blog, comments, or site visits over the course of this semester have you had so far? 5 pts 

Considering that I am now four blogs in, I have only received one like on my first blog.  

What has the overall traffic been like on your blog since the beginning of this class? 5pts 

Since I started this course, my overall traffic has been slow. I am fairly certain that no one has viewed or commented on my blogs except for my online professor.

This blog and the information I share with others will provide more recognition for my personal reputation. As for my future professional reputation, this information will encourage me to broaden my horizons and spread my wings.

In my online endeavors with followers and others, I can confidently say that I provide humor, honesty, sarcasm, and cynicism. The honesty stems from when I stumble through life, when I ask for prayers, and when I seek other people’s opinions. Conversely, my humor, sarcasm, and cynicism arise from my political posts and when I discuss current events. When I worry about how someone is doing, I give them a call or send them a text. In terms of information sharing, I only share my name, age, and email address. I never disclose my phone number or home address with anyone except family and close friends.  

Think about future trends and goals for your online reputation for the rest of the semester, once you graduate, and beyond.  10 pts 

For the remainder of the semester, my goal is to create a brand I can be proud of. Since my next major assignment will be an original TikTok advertisement, I might jump on that trend. Once I graduate, I will hopefully learn how to conduct myself on multiple sites. Beyond that, I will discover my true identity and build more connections along the way.  

What were your perceptions before and after this assignment in regard to online reputation management? 10 pts 

Before this assignment, my perception was limited. I thought older users were smart and mature while younger users were stubborn and narrow minded. However, my thought process has turned around. Age has nothing to do with maturity. You can be in your 20’s and still be a mature, responsible social media user. Just as I believe you can be an immature user at 50 or older. I know that the smallest mistake can damage a brand, and certain people will punish you because of that mistake. So far, I do not have a professional brand. I have a long way to go; interviews to attend, companies to investigate, and so on.

Goncharov was first entered into Wikipedia between Day 4 and 5 (attempts to vandalise it with fake info don't count, incidentally – please knock that shit off) under List of Internet Phenomena. This was then expanded into its own Wikipedia page at the end of Day 5 because, according to the talk history: "the topic now meets the notability threshold for its own artice due to significant coverage in The New York Times and other sources cited." We're on Wikipedia, people!

Will Jouno assist Fukuchi?

In ch 92, Fukuchi shows Bram to Jouno (though I'd say introduce would be a better way to describe it cause Jouno's blind but minor inconsequential details) and reveals that he is the mastermind behind the Agency being framed and asks Jouno to help him. Personally, I think that Jouno is just a bit more likely to form some kind of alliance with Fukuchi but not necessarily a full-on partnership, much less to the point where it'd be considered working more with Fukuchi as Kamui of the DOA than helping Fukuchi as Fukuchi himself or as the commander of the HD.

Also, I am using @buraihatranslations translation of ch 92, so that's where my exact phrasing for quotations and page counts are coming from. You can read the full translation here.

The main context of our focus

“I’m the mastermind. Jouno, wouldn’t you like to assist me?” (p 19)

For starters, I don’t think Fukuchi is being a reckless idiot for saying this. Considering that he's literally Kamui, he obviously must’ve considered this as a calculated but worthwhile risk to take. As I’ve previously mentioned in my ch 89.5 cover art analysis, Jouno is the most on the fence of the HD in terms of supporting Fukuchi vs believing in the Agency’s innocence. In fact, as we learned in 92, he simply doesn’t care and can therefore be considered a (nearly) neutral party. Jouno is also basically a living breathing lie detector, so he can tell apart the likes of jokes and lies from the truth very easily. Jouno also cares primarily about being able to hear his victim’s suffering, regardless of who’s right or wrong or innocent or guilty (as he’s told Aya). It logically just makes the most sense for Fukuchi to try to get Jouno on his side out of all the HD because :

Teruko is a simp for Fukuchi but she still cares about civilians and being able to take pride in her job as an officer (Sky Casino)

Tachihara has already clearly established his doubts in the ADA being guilty in front of all of the HD (ch 89) and told Fukuchi that he sees himself as more Mafia than HD now (ch 89.5)

Tecchou has a very strong sense of justice and cares about fairness, so asking him to quite literally join the side of the terrorists would never work out and would essentially be a waste of both time and possibly personnel too

What does Jouno personally want?

As I've already briefly touched on (and presumably you already read ch 92 before this), Jouno has already stated his goals, which gives us a good sense of where he stands morally.

“I just want to hear the voice of someone’s suffering.” (p 9)

“To hurt people under the name of the law[,] corner them and hear their “sound” as they break.” (p 10)

Now that we’ve more than established that Jouno is in fact, a sadist, I do want to emphasize Jouno’s mention of the law. Not only does he enjoy making people suffer (specifically psychologically, as he’s mentioned before), but he specifically mentions that he wants to do it “under/in the name of the law”, meaning that he likely either only wants to do it in a “justifiable”/“excusable” way or that he doesn’t want or plan to be held accountable for his actions (or worse, both). Until we get a backstory reveal, there could be any number of reasons for him being this way. I think it’s fairly likely that he’s from a similar situation to Fukuchi (took part in the Great War, and the mental scarring of everything he experienced then caused him to find some sort of extreme and inhumane goal or enjoyment to cope with it all). So for example, he could have been drafted for the War because he’s an ability user (or maybe he already happened to be in some sort of training where he received recognition for his skills, ie. the military academy or part of a renowned dojo) and eventually that led him to become a sadist because coping mechanism or discovering that he’s a sadist because of some extreme circumstances (ie. having to interrogate a prisoner for the first time and realizing how much he enjoyed giving and hearing the psychological torture).

Example of Jouno's excuses and justification

“I was just asking suspects for cooperation!”

“Then do it after they sign the consent form for judicial transaction. Otherwise, it’s not justice.” (p 12)

On one hand, we have Jouno who is very quick to make excuses for his actions by using his position as an officer to justify his behavior. Despite knowingly and intentionally using extreme measures, beyond what's necessary for the situation, he's using the law and his job to try to justify it. (If you're seeing some real-world parallels here, good job!)

On the other hand, we have Tecchou who very clearly values actual justice that is fair to all parties (as we’ve seen previously with him promising the cafe owner that the ADA will get a fair trial at the very least in ch 72). In fact, I think it’d be safe to say that Tecchou is the one that values impartial justice and fairness the most out of the HD, but that's not the focus here.

Parallelisms and which other organizations would suit him and his goals

(p 15-16)

For starters, Jouno appears to be on the side that believes that the ADA is a part of/affiliated with the DOA (if I’m not reading this wrong)

Also, I’d like to highlight him saying:

“ ‘Our tastes match’, if I should say. The abusive nature. To be honest, I’m almost empathetic. If we happen to lose this battle, I wouldn’t mind reemploying to their side. Not to say that we wouldn’t possibly lose.”

Jouno has no doubt in the strength of the HD but also just wants to be on the abusively cruel side dishing out the suffering. If he’s able to use his position to excuse his actions (ie. what he said about Aya just a few pages ago), then that’s even better for him. The ADA has an ability permit and currently ⅓ of the police force is siding with them and believes in their innocence. Joining the ADA next, should the HD lose, would be the most advantageous for him, if the allegations of them being abusively cruel terrorists were true.

In my opinion, his actual next best organization to join, based on his interests and goals so far as well as his own methods, would be the PM. They have an ability permit too and he’d have just as many chances to be either on the front lines and/or work with the interrogation team. With what his goals has revealed about his moral code, he’s just more cut out for the nature and surface level goals of the PM than the ADA. In fact, Dazai has already admitted to the two of them being alike (which we as the readers can deduce is for their methods in manipulation and interrogation) and Dazai has previously mentioned that he’d sometimes have to come in and help Kouyou’s interrogation team with the job (ch 19). Jouno joining the PM could be a very easy transition, should he stop caring about doing things “under the name of the law” (p 10). However, there is a loophole with the PM being a part of the tripartite tactic, of which the whole goal is to protect Yokohama. Both we as the readers and the members of the ADA know that despite their methods, the PM does in fact care about upholding the overall peace and safety of Yokohama. The reason why he jokes about joining the ADA and makes no mention of the PM (at least in my opinion), is because before all of this, to the public eye, the ADA was one of the “good guys” that were upholding the law whereas the PM is quite literally the mafia. (I touch on this part too in my ch 89.5 cover art analysis.)

Back to answering Fukuchi's question now

I feel like Jouno is ever so slightly more likely to form some kind of alliance with Fukuchi as Kamui but not straight up joining the DOA/allying with the DOA as a whole because again, Jouno is very much sadistic but he also specifically tells Aya (a possible hostage and a confirmed supporter of the ADA) that he specifically wants to “to hurt people under the name of the law” (p 10). Fully siding with the DOA and Kamui would mean that he’d no longer be working under the protection of the law, by any extent, unless Fukuchi were to create some kind of excuse as the commander of the HD (ie. Jouno was under the control of the vampirism). He might work with Fukuchi but I don’t think he’d work with or for Kamui. Either way, I think that overall it’s a very close tie.

In short:

If he says yes then he’d risk not having the law to protect him any longer, which is a part of what he clearly wants to have. The only way around this is some sort of agreement where Fukuchi will create a believable excuse for Jouno helping or he does it in a very indirect way that won't be noticed by others or can easily be played off as some sort of coincidence.

If he says no, he’d likely have to go up against Fukuchi and Bram and risk getting turned as well. I doubt he’d be killed since that would raise too many questions with Tecchou and Teruko, and thanks to Tachihara’s fight, I’d say it’s all been explicitly stated that still being alive is a part of the requirements to be turned into a vampire. When Tachihara tried to off himself as a last resort, specifically to stop Fukuchi and Bram from turning him into a vampire, Fukuchi personally prevented that from happening (ch 90).

Jouno has established that he just wants to hear the sound of people suffering (which Fukuchi would probably have learned of or figured out by now, considering that he’s the commanding officer here), which can be achieved from quite literally any side. However, his condition to this is doing it "under the name of the law", so being on a side that has the law’s protection and works on the front lines is where he’d be closest to achieving this with minimal risk (so realistically the HD or ADA). I doubt Jouno would have any interest in joining the Special Division because I doubt he’d get to do much interrogating or front-line work there, in addition to him having less of an excuse for his cruel methods, and I've already gone over why he'd rather join the ADA than the PM.

A/N: Hello! I’ve said before how much I suck at writing summaries so I’ll probably never add them, but well this story serves like a precedent to future oneshots that I’ll write with SSA Reader lol most of my writing inspiration lately has been because I joined the Criminal Minds Bingo 2020 and one of my squares is holidays, so I plan to write a series of  oneshots about different holidays that will end up in fluff because Spencer Reid deserves fluff after everything he’s been through ha! So yeah, I don’t want to be so repetitve but again English is not my first language, so forgive me for the mistakes, AND also you should know that I almost always incorporate songs/lyrics to my writing, back when I was like 15 (meaning almost 10 years ago) I had a fanfic page that consisted on oneshots inspired by songs (and people really seemed to like that) so it stuck with me, it’s like my tradition. The bar was crowded, many people celebrating their favorite team winning, others simply enjoying themselves. If only they knew there was a serial killer among them, trying to decide which person should be his next victim. He was killing both men and women, but he had an specific type.

“Come on, John, let’s get out of here and have some fun just you and me” She carefully slipped her hand in her right pocket.

“I said no, I need to be here, I need t-to, I-I, AGH!” He quickly went to grab the gun he was hiding on his pants but a gun was already being pointed at him while people were being evacuated from the place.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you, Danny” The man stopped dead in his tracks.

“Now what you’re gonna do is show me your hands, it’s over, Danny” He didn’t resist, he was too overwhelmed to put on a fight.

Matt quickly took him and guided him out of there, while (Y/N) put her hair in a ponytail, she was also sweating.

“Great job, (Y/N)” Emily said while she walked up to her.

“I was afraid of things going south but luckily he didn’t put on a fight” She felt adrenaline going through her veins.

“Now we can finally go home” JJ had joined them and the three of them got out of the bar so they could go to the field office and officially end the case that had them almost 10 days away from Quantico.

SSA (Y/N) (Y/L/N) had joined the Behavioral Analysis Unit seven months ago, during that time the team had learned that she was a forensic psychologist that was transferred from the Crisis Negotiation Unit and prior to that, she had worked at the National Institute of Justice.

When she first arrived, everyone was curious and worried as to why there was a new addition to the BAU, Prentiss hadn’t anticipated the arrival of a new team member and was suspicious thinking it could be the directors sending someone to get dirt on the BAU. But all their worries and doubts were forgotten when (Y/N) proved she was more than apt for the job and she really wanted to be part of the team.

While everyone slept on the jet, (Y/N) couldn’t fall asleep, she tried to read her book but what she was really doing was going through the possible scenarios that could have gone down, she couldn’t help but do that, she made mental notes as to what she could’ve done then, and different ways she could’ve talked to Danny. That night had been a win but she never wanted to miss an opportunity to learn and reflect on her actions.

“So Vera, huh?” Spencer sat beside her.

“I thought you were all sleeping” She smiled softly.

“I was but I guess I’m not that tired” He shrugged his shoulders.

“How could you not be tired? We’ve barely slept these 10 days”

“Says the one that is also awake right now” Reid nudged her shoulder.

“Ok, you got me there” She smirked while she put her book aside.

“That’s where I got the name Vera” (Y/N) explained.

“It means faith in Russian, whether in Albanian means summer”

“Summer Faith” Spencer furrowed his brow. “I had a classmate in middle school named Summer Faith, I’m not lying” She smirked.

“Well she might as well should’ve been named Vera” He suggested.

“First and middle name summed up in four letters, that would’ve saved her trouble when writing her long name” She started to feel more relaxed.

“Maybe” He laughed softly.

“I thought about telling the guy my name was Ophelia but I thought he would not buy it” 

“Ophelia, like Hamlet’s tragic heroine” Spencer noticed.

“Well yeah, but the idea actually came from the song” (Y/N) smiled remembering the song she enjoyed hearing from time to time.

“I am unfamiliar with it” Spencer replied with a confused look on his face.

“Shut up! You don’t listen to music?” 

“I do, I do I just don’t know that song” Spencer nodded wishing he knew the song so he could have something else to talk about with her.

“Here, let me get my headphones, I’ll play it for you”

(Y/N) proceeded to take the headphones out of her pocket and searched the song on her library, she handed one headphone to Spencer and she placed the other on her ear. After she hit play, she yawned, finally feeling the tiredness get to her.

“You should sleep, you know?” Spencer could see the exhaustion in her face.

“Can I borrow your shoulder for a bit?” (Y/N) looked at him curiously and smiled.

“Of course, (Y/N)” Spence bit back a smile as he saw her place her head on his shoulder, he felt his heart flutter at the feeling.

It took only a few minutes for her to fall asleep, while she apparently left the song on repeat, Spencer decided he liked it and kept listening to it.

The truth was that ever since (Y/N) had arrived to the BAU, he had felt really drawn to her, she was intelligent, energetic, friendly, confident, and always learning something new, her curious mind was exciting for Spencer, one day she arrived talking about how fascinating the French Revolution was, the next she’d talk about embroidery, the next about tennis, the next about Latin American literature, the next about the cartoons she watched as a kid, talking to her was a delight to him.

He wasn’t sure if people could tell he had a soft spot for her but he had talked to JJ about it, she had encourage him to ask her out, or at least hang out with her more outside of work so they could get to know each other better. JJ was almost certain (Y/N) reciprocated Spencer’s feelings but neither wanted to act on them.

Suddenly Spencer felt his eyes were getting heavy and his head resting in (Y/N)’s and felt asleep while the song continued playing.

Episode 20: You Really Do Hate Cats!

(CONTENT WARNING: This blog post contains discussion of phobias, child abuse, and people doing the worst thing to intensify those problems. Those things are in the show, I didn’t just bring them up out of nowhere.)

Well, it’s that time again. Time to grab a balloon and tell my friends what I think of an episode of Ranma 1/2. We’re starting the first arc of season two with this episode, though oddly enough I feel like I mostly remember what stuff is going to happen in it. But maybe I don’t remember right? I’d love it if that is the case. Though...speaking of that...there is a certain character I have dreaded appearing in this series, and I’d hoped he wouldn’t appear for a while, but I checked and he appears this season. I...I thought I had more time. Oh well, let’s do this episode and I’ll worry about him when he gets here.

Okay, well, for the most part, this episode is actually a lot better than I remember it being. As it turns out, some of the details mutated in my head in the decade since I last saw it, and I actually thought things were worse than they were.

The episode starts in the Kuno manor, where our favorite swordsman is practicing to once again fight Ranma Saotome. But he’s not alone, because for the first time we meet Kuno’s henchman, Sasuke. He’s a ninja, and he’ll do whatever Kuno tells him to do, but he probably won’t do it very well.

From there, we see Ranma’s dad is training him in stupid ways again, and they get back to the house to find Shampoo has mailed Ranma something from China: a pink cat. That’s a problem, because Ranma has a severe cat phobia. It’s not random, either, Genma directly created it. See, when Ranma was 6, Genma thought he should teach his son Cat Fu, which he heard about from an ancient martial arts manuscript. The way to teach it is to cover the disciple in fish sausage and through them into a room with starving cats.

Obviously, that just ended up traumatizing Ranma, and the very next page of the book would have told Genma that training someone that way is very stupid. Kasumi, drawing on the common misunderstandings people have about exposure therapy, thinks that just inviting a ton of cats to be around will help, but of course it doesn’t, it makes Ranma even more distressed. Sasuke is hiding under the floorboards though, and he runs off to tell Kuno about Ranma’s weakness.

At first, Kuno says something about how he could never cowardly use an opponent’s weakness to unfairly win, but then he still makes Sasuke tell him about it, because he can still use it to win in an honorable way. The plan they go for is pretty ridiculous: they leave a note in Ranma’s locker that Akane’s been kidnapped, and he has to go to the gym to save her. But Akane is standing next to Ranma as he reads the note, so he knows that’s not true.

He goes anyway out of curiosity, only to find Sasuke there dressed up as Akane. With the wrong color wig. Even though the trap keeps failing, Ranma walks into it anyway because he has nothing better to do, until he realizes what is going on: cats. But Ranma manages to fight the fear and pretend he’s okay, hoping to just take Akane out of there, but then it becomes clear Sasuke took the extra step of also bringing an enormous tiger.

That’s when we cut back to Genma and Kasumi, and the old man explains that he tried curing Ranma of his phobia, but his way of doing so was to just keep throwing him at hungry cats, only changing the type of food attached to his body. All of it just made the problem worse, but it also actually led to Ranma developing Cat Fu. When Ranma gets scared enough, his mind just let’s go and he mentally becomes a cat.

That happens in the basement of the school, making it easy for him to beat the tiger and escape, just in time to kick Kuno’s butt without even trying. But he doesn’t stop there, and starts running around the school still acting like a cat. Akane follows him just as the dads show up. Genma says the only way to break Ranma out of it when he was a kid was with the help of a kindly old lady, but she’s dead. So, Genma tries dressing up and doing it himself. That fails, so they try catnip, forgetting that Ranma just thinks he’s a cat, so the stuff doesn’t really affect him.

The situation does kind of solve itself, as Ranma doesn’t attack Akane, as she’s afraid of, but instead curls up in her lap to purr. The whole school is watching, so that’s embarrassing for her, but then he kisses her and she freezes for a second before throwing Ranma into the school pool. Oh, and the pink cat is watching and didn’t like that. The curse activating returns his brain to normal, and Ranma has no clue why he was thrown in a pool. Akane walks home, cursing Ranma for doing that, but sounding conflicted.

So, the big thing I misremembered about this episode was I thought Genma did all the cat stuff with 0 thoughts about how it would affect Ranma and not giving a crap how it affected his son. That is actually not the case, he’s clearly really torn up about the phobia, though he still says some bad stuff about Ranma being ‘unmanly’ for having a phobia. He even tried to cure Ranma, a few times. It’s just that, well, his actions still traumatized Ranma. Sufficient ignorance is indistinguishable from malice, as they say. Genma is still, on the whole, abusive to Ranma in my opinion, but he’s not as bad as he could have been, I have to admit.

This was also just a funny episode. The comedy largely worked, even if some of the jokes didn’t quite land. Kuno and Sasuke were especially good, and I found Ranma fighting his fear both humorous and kind of inspiring. The man has a hell of a willpower. Not going to lie, the Cat-Ranma just immediately going for Akane’s lap and then kissing her was cute, I really liked that. Of course, I’m a sucker for anything with them, so I’m an easy mark there.

It’s also interesting how this works as the first part of a large arc, because if you didn’t know that was the case I can imagine thinking this was just a standalone episode. The pink cat was the impetus for the plot, but it’s what will drive the coming episodes forward.

One thing I found annoying was how different the dub and sub were this time around, in terms of script. The dub had a lot more bashing of Ranma for being scared of cats, including from Akane. That isn’t in the subtitled version at all, and I thought the episode worked a lot better there. I’m always a fan of taking liberties with a localization in order to make the story work better in the new country, but I don’t think we needed Akane insulting Ranma for his trauma.

Hey, a Character Spotlight again! Haven’t had one of these in a bit, and this one is for Sasuke Sarugakure. Let’s start with his voice actors. In the English dub, he’s voiced by Robert O. Smith. Does that name sound familiar? It should, I talked about him recently, since he’s the one who voiced Genma Saotome in the dub as well. His voice for Sasuke is extremely comedic, going for an over-the-top pathetic voice. He makes Sasuke just sound like comic relief, which he is. What’s interesting is what the other actor does with him.

In Japanese, he’s played by Shigeru Chiba, another voice actor from this show in Japan who is just known for a billion things. Standouts include Buggy the Clown in One Piece, Emperor Pilaf and Raditz in the Dragon Ball franchise, and dubbing over John de Lancie as Discord in the Japanese dub of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I was completely shocked to hear him play Sasuke with more gravitas, using a very serious voice that one would expect from a ninja, which clashed perfectly with the situations and his character design to make the comedy far better than in the dub. One of those rare times I’m actually preferring the Japanese version!

As a character, Sasuke is interesting because he’s not in the manga at all. For reasons none seem to know, the creative team for the anime decided to delay introducing minor character Hikaru Gosenkugi, and replaced him with Sasuke. We’ll get to Hikaru when he appears, but I don’t really mind Sasuke’s addition to the show. Giving Kuno a henchman just makes his dynamic even better, and there’s something I just really like to Sasuke’s almost naive way of trying to plot and scheme. I don’t actually have any deep analysis, at least not as of yet, just wanted to give him a moment in the Spotlight for being something interesting.

I didn’t expect to like this episode so much! It wasn’t great, there were parts I didn’t care for, but on the whole I’m happy to see my expectations overcome. I’m putting this episode in the middle of the pack, at the #10 slot. It was fun, but it has a lot of better episodes when it comes to making me smile. (Or cry.)

How people found the survey

It’s day 12 of the 2020 Gender Census (closing 12th March), and there have been almost 16,000 participants, which is phenomenal. I’m still boggled! It’s 40% higher than last year, and over 4,500 more people than last year!

But anyway, since things have been going to well in the participation department, I’ve shifted over to the analysis department. A lot of my calculation spreadsheet stuff from last year still works, so I’m already able to see what’s popular this year and so on, which has saved me a lot of time and energy. I’m using it to analyse the results of the new questions: ages and referrals.

If you’ve read last year’s report you’ll know that I’ve been particularly concerned about making sure that older participants are represented. With that in mind, this year I added an age question and a referrer question.

I have previously asked about age as a one-off (2017), to see whether that could tell us anything useful or interesting, and it wasn’t particularly successful because the ages of participants were more representative of the usual age distribution of people on the internet and using social networks. That makes sense, because most people are finding the survey through social networks! In previous years I asked for an exact number. This year, to preserve anonymity in the public spreadsheet as much as possible (you never know), I split age answers into groups of 5 years. (11-15, 16-20, 21-25, etc.)

If you’ve been keeping up with status reports or looking at the progress spreadsheet you’ll know that participants over the age of 30 are not as common in the Gender Census. The percentage of participants aged 31+ is currently about 14%.

I also asked how participants found the survey, and the responses to this have been interestingly diverse (GoodReads, Penny Arcade forums, Pornhub??) but mainly focused on the Big Three:

Tumblr - 36.4%

Twitter - 19.8%

Facebook - 12.2%

That’s just over two thirds of participants from those three websites alone. (Runners up include Discord (9%), Reddit, our own mailing list and the Nonbinary Wiki.)

For the first few days Twitter was bringing in a lot more people than Tumblr, but then after a week Tumblr took the lead significantly. I suspect this might mean that Twitter is better for intense flash-in-the-pan viral activity, whereas Tumblr might be more slow and steady.

But the most interesting information can be gleaned by comparing age and referrer. It’s particularly interesting to me because I want to get more data from underrepresented age groups. Perhaps if some social networks are more frequented by those ages groups I can focus the survey’s presence more in those communities.

This is what I found:

This picture might be a little difficult to see, so I’ll do my best to describe it. (I don’t know how good Google Sheets is with screen readers but I’ll make sure this data shows up in the publicly viewable stuff-tracking spreadsheet too.) The table includes the Big Three referrers (Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook), plus the Gender Census mailing list. They cover almost three quarters of all participants.

Broadly speaking:

Tumblr was the most popular source for finding the survey among people under the age of 30, peaking in the 16-20 range.

Twitter is unusual for having a nice even age distribution of about 26-55, with no clear and definitive “peak” - 46-50 looks popular until you see that the sample size for that age range is pretty small at 121 participants.

Facebook covers a lot of the older age ranges starting at 41+, and excelling in the 56+ ranges too, though it should be noted that sample sizes for those age ranges shrink significantly.

The first three I included just because they were the most common. Those three sites cover all age ranges, more or less. But the Gender Census mailing list is of interest to me because it’s so far the joint most common way for people over the age of 70 to access the survey - and it is only common in that age range, even though about 4% of participants are coming from that source. If you look at it in isolation it’s also consistently common in the 50+ range.

So this tells me a few things about how I can move forward:

I was right to start crowdfunding for a mailserver so that I could run a proper mailing list. Older participants are much more likely to stay in tune with the survey using email, it seems - and ages 41 and over are only about 3% of survey participants. At first I used Mailchimp, and this year when I hit the 2,000 subscriber limit for the free tier I switched to the less sophisticated but well-suited TinyLetter, for the 5,000 subscriber limit. There are already 700 more subscribers so I feel good about that decision! If we go over 5,000 I will definitely be including mailing list service fees in the annual crowdfunding, because the mailing list is clearly an important way to get the word out to underrepresented groups.

I probably need to have a Facebook presence. Thanks, I hate it. The older age groups are not represented, the older age groups are often finding the survey on Facebook, and the survey doesn’t have a Facebook presence. The latter is because Facebook’s surveillance culture creeps me out so much. I’m currently undecided about how to move forward with this. Even if I have a Facebook page and post about the survey, since I left Facebook over 10 years ago it’s come to light that the posts of pages who don’t pay for attention are often not seen at all due to ~algorithms~ and that makes me uncomfortable. I’m honestly not sure what to do.

With Richie being a hotshot comedian now, his manager had decided it was now time to do a meet and greet. Richie not only now performs his own standup comedy shows but is on Saturday Night Live, does movies and tv shows. 

Having a rocky 2.5 years in the comedy industry, Richie’s new beginning seems promising, even Eddie is thrilled. After all, Eddie is the one that forced Richie to fire his writer and old manager due to homophobic jokes, not being able to come out thus shoving him back into the closest; and had jokes that were far too dry and tasteless that even Richie didn’t laugh. They made Stan’s jokes seem laughable now! So with the help of his boyfriend of 2 years, he and Eddie found a new manager.

“Excited for your debut M&G?” Scotty, Richie’s new manager, asks.

“Oh, heck yes!” Richie exclaims as he sets up his table. “Give me a sec.” Richie spots his boyfriend carrying a large bag that he immediately recognises as Eddie’s first aid bag. “Eds, we don’t need that babe.”

“Uh, yes, yes we do. I can’t get sick and neither can you!” Eddie replies placing the bag behind Richie’s chair. “Do you know how many germs are spread around here?”

“I -” Richie starts.

Richie can feel granddad’s wedding ring shift in his pocket, causing Richie to remember why he even has it in the first place. He carries it with him day in day out, ever since the couple’s 1st anniversary. Knowing that any day could be when he chooses to marry the man he’s been in love with since he was 10. 

“It’s a rhetorical question. Okay, long lines in a confide space, you will. Get. Sick.”

Eddie isn’t wrong, it takes only a couple people with a cold or flu to then infect hundreds more. Keeping a load up of hand-sanitizer on hand is important, he places it where it’s hidden but within Richie’s reach. The entire bag contains multiple bottles of water and fruits; as well as all those important tissues and general first aid kit that has been overly stocked with more bandages, band-aids, gauzes and alcohol wipes than it needs. 

But Richie isn’t nervous for the one on one meet and greet, it’s the actual panel where he’s speaking and Eddie refused to come up on the stage with him. He doesn’t know what he’s meant to do, sure he’s done interviews but it was one person, not hundreds. 

“Richie? You ready?” Scotty asks.

“Yeah.”

“Good, ‘cause it’s showtime.” Eddie stands off to the side and gives him the thumbs up and Richie looks everywhere but the stampede of fans coming in. All the other celebrities at the function are relaxed and getting ready but Richie is ready to puke instead of greeting the fans.

Maybe this was all a mistake, Richie thinks to himself. But he loves his fans, if it wasn’t for Eddie he would be on the list of most hated people around the world. Besides, Derry should be on that said list of places to not visit on account on its outdated teachings. 

His negative thoughts come to a halt as his first fan arrives at his station. It’s awkward, he has no idea what to say or do but nonetheless, he’s still sweet, awkward and charming.

After 15 fans come to his table, he’s finally gotten the hang of it and that would also be 15 uses of the hand sanitizer thanks to his boyfriend’s need for hygiene and germaphobia. 

What Richie didn’t expect was his fans to be of a variety of ages, he’s seen kids as young as 12 come by with their parents in tow. Parents dragging their kids with them, the rare elderly citizens come by and not to mention a few whole families; we’re talking kids, parents and grandparents. Richie is blown away.

He sees a break and quickly looks to Eddie, who sits quietly behind the table out of sight. “Holy shit! This is insane!” Richie whispers, his mouth covered by his hands to not be seen as someone who talks to himself.

Eddie looks up from his book, “That’s great. Also, I was thinking that I come on stage with you.”

“That’s great,” Richie looks back briefly. “Oop, more customers.”

Richie can hear Eddie’s giggle and then it stops and a page flips. He accidentally bumps the ring in his pocket, causing him to jolt. Could this be it?

A couple of hours later, Richie finally sets up for the panel, the most important event of the day, according to his manager. “Are you sure Eds, I don’t want to seem like I’m forcing you,” Richie says as he gets hooked up to the sound system.

“I want to, the number of fans asking about me… I couldn’t. Also, don’t call me Eds,” Eddie responds and Richie signals for another mic and third chair is brought out to the stage.

There’s another panic attack bubbling in Richie’s throat and blood, he feels like he’s being smothered, he can feel his pulse around his body and hear his heartbeat ringing in his ears. He instinctively turns to look out at the crowd from behind the curtain and sure enough, there are, at least, 200 people. Every ticket for the panel was sold out, he remembers his manager said. Richie and Eddie are signalled out to the stage and manages to get to the chair without an issue and finally looks to the crowd. 

You can do this, he thinks to himself, I’ve got Eddie with me.

“So Richie, in your Netflix Special, you had stated that you are now writing your own material. Why the change?” The host asks; Richie had never really publically stated why the change but he guesses it’s time everyone knew.

“My old manager thought my jokes were too crass and wouldn’t appeal to anyone. He also claimed that self-deprecating or my gay sex jokes wouldn’t appeal. So he kept me in the closest and gave me jokes that I would never have approved.” Richie doesn’t hold back unleashing all his anger out. “I, of course, sued him and won.”

Cheers of approval echoes through and Richie’s tenseness starts to die down, relaxing into the crowd.

“Right, let’s go into the fan questions.”

Richie looks to Eddie and smiles coyly at him, Eddie returns the favour and gently squeezes Richie’s thigh for support. The two looks back at the crowd and straight up the middle are about 15 people ready to ask questions. “Why did it take you so long to leave that manager?” A fan asks.

“I couldn’t break the contract,” Richie explains. “When we were 2 years fresh out of college I had signed with this man and Eddie had gone into risk analysis. I did one gig and immediately wanted to drop him.”

Richie is about to continue when Eddie cuts him off, bringing the mic to his mouth.

“He knew that I delt with contracts and risks so he asked me to look at it. To put it simply, if he left and signed with someone else, he would’ve been in grave debt where it would’ve been damaging and become a whole legal issue.”

Richie smiles at his boyfriend thinking back to the day that he took the godforsaken contract to the young risk analyst. As Eddie looked over the whole contract, he notices the whole fine print, something he knew that Richie would obviously skim over like every other person. Stan would obviously have 6 fits if he caught Richie doing that but alas Eddie isn’t Stan.

The manager had several writers on hand and Eddie looked every single one of them up and sure enough, each writer had a bad review. This man was going to stop Richie’s career before it even began but after 2 years Richie could opt out without any legal penalties. 

Eddie had explained everything to Richie but that still meant that Richie would have to do whatever they said to not face court. Richie, of course, was heartbroken but that was the way that it had to go. But in the comfort of Eddie’s apartment, he kissed him and Eddie kissed him back until he had pushed Richie away.

“Richie, you’re seeing someone. I can’t -” Eddie had said.

“I don’t care, I like you. Eds, I’m gay and I’m seeing someone against my will,” Richie tries to reason.

“That - that doesn’t matter.”

I broke his heart but he knew that Eddie was right. Natalie was lovely, no matter the circumstance he couldn’t hurt her.

“Eddie with Richie being a comedian, have you met any other comedians?” A fan asks Richie’s boyfriend.

“I have actually. Bo Burnham and John Mulaney,” Eddie replies. “In fact, Bo Burnham has a very relatable song called Art is Dead. It’s the epitome of Richie.”

“Oh, how so?” Richie presses. 

Sure he’s met Bo Burnham but he hasn’t really listened to his stand up shows, all he knows is that he makes funny songs. Eddie is often raving about a few of Bo’s songs but that’s about it, Eddie’s never gotten him to actually listen to them.

“Okay, so young Richie was an asshat and that’s just putting it lightly. Anyway, there’s this line, ‘Have you ever been to a birthday party for children, and one of the children won’t stop screaming?’” The crowd laughs, “I can guarantee you that Richie often did this, for all 6 of us and if we were lucky, also his own party, making it all 7.“ 

Richie just starts to laugh knowing full well that it was him as a child, he mouths ‘true’ to the audience, causing more and more laughter before Eddie’s voice starts to echo back through the speakers.

“Richie always craved the attention, as mentioned in the song, but one line that I use often is, ‘There’s other people, you selfish asshole!’“ Richie tries to contain his laughter but he burst and tears start to stream down his face as he laughs the hardest he has in years, from a joke that wasn’t his own. 

Nobody can break him but somehow his boyfriend explaining how Bo Burnham’s song is relatable just makes him burst into tears from laughter. Even Stan’s dry and sarcastic wit wasn’t enough to make him cry, in laughter, when they were kids or even now as adults. It’s physically impossible.

“I hope a lot of you got that on camera, me crying; nobody has been able to do that ever!” Richie exclaims as he wipes away the tears from under his eyes. Now it’s Eddie’s turn to laugh vigorously. 

But at that moment, Richie knows, he knows that the man right beside him, laughing in absolute joy, is the man he wants to spend the rest of his life with. Normally he’d forget about his granddad’s ring during the day until he got home and has taken his pants off. But now as the thought continues to creep into his brain, the ring feels like it’s burning a hole in his pocket, wanting to escape.

“How long have you two been friends for before you got together?” Another fan asks 

“About 3 decades of friendship and 2 years as boyfriends,” Eddie confirms.

“It would’ve been 4 maybe 5 years of being boyfriends if I didn’t have that shitty manager.” In Richie’s peripheral vision, he can see Eddie’s shocked face. “Don’t act surprised, I flirted with you through all of middle school to college.” Eddie laughs as does the crowd.

Richie knows it’s too soon but maybe this is the way it is meant to happen, how he is meant to ask Eddie to marry him. He’d be bloody stupid to not do it when he has known that Eddie is the only one for him ever since Bowers’ cousin in the arcade back when he was 14. 

The ring in his pocket becomes Richie’s main focus, not the fans; if he takes it out… 

“Rich? You good?” Eddie asks.

“Huh? Oh uh, yeah. Yeah, I’m fine,” Richie stammers. “Next question.”

“You said that you suffer from anxiety, how do you manage it when you’re on stage?” A young girl asks, she’s probably no more than 16, she fidgets with her fingernails as she speaks and it becomes that she’s nervous.

“Don’t be nervous hun, it’s okay, I am too,” Richie states and the crowd ‘awe’s’ causing Richie to chuckle. “I know if I’m having an anxiety attack and it’s become part of my everyday life so I find it’s best to act as if it’s not there. It’s partially because I’m too lazy to get therapy.”

That’s the truth, any time he gets an anxiety attack he knows he’s not dying especially since Eddie has explained it to him. It’s annoying but therapy is just too bothersome, he has to try to fit it in with his busy schedule and then he’ll probably have to get anti-anxiety pills or anti-depressants to stop the anxiety attacks.

“But, if Eddie is by my side then all my anxiety tends to go away,” Richie finishes and quickly digs into his pocket, fiddling with the ring in his pocket. It’s hidden away from the way he’s sitting which is the important thing.

But he’s unsure of what to do, does he do it now in front of hundreds? Or does he do it later at a restaurant? If he does it now and Eddie says ‘no’ then that’s going to leave an awkward 25 minutes left of the panel. 

He looks back at Eddie. 

“If you ever get married, would you become Richie Kaspbrak or Eddie Tozier or Richie and Eddie Kaspbrak-Tozier?” Richie’s eyes almost pop out of his head, the pain is unbearable, he needs to break, he wants to break but it’s an impulsive move to propose without thinking it through. 

He hasn’t thought of how he would do it.

Hasn’t thought of what he’d say.

“I uh,” Eddie faulters, “100% Eddie Tozier, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Richie chokes on his saliva and bursts into a coughing fit, what the fuck?

“You for real, Eds?” Richie questions, he takes one look at the audience, who are anticipating on what happens next, then back to Eddie. 

“If you’re taking it as a proposal, I don’t thi-” Eddie’s cut off by Richie holding a white gold plated ring. “Are you -” The look in Richie’s eyes is enough for Eddie to take the ring and place it right on his finger. Sure enough, it is, surprisingly a perfect fit.

“Ask him!” Some dude yells from the crowd, a chorus erupts and causes Richie to fall from his chair and onto one knee.

“I know this isn’t a restaurant and is entirely impulsive but it wouldn’t be me if it wasn’t. I love you, have since we were 10, instead of it being hypothetical, will you truly become Edward Tozier? Marry me?”  

“Yes,” Eddie replies pulling Richie up from the floor, the crowd erupts as he kisses Richie’s cheek before sending him back to his own seat. 

“Next question?” Richie says.

The wrap for the film in November left me high - it had been an amazing experience again for me but the joy at the film completing was made so much better by the knowledge that I would soon be back home, holding Sophia in my arms.

I got back to my apartment after the wrap party at around midnight, slightly inebriated and dialled her back in LA.  

“It’s done, I’m coming home” I declared.

“you seem happy” she said laughing at my slurred speech “are you drunk?”

“little bit I think, yup! You alone?”

“a ha – kids are at Julie’s today”

 She Said

When Ke called me after the wrap party, he was clearly a little drunk, a bit goofy ……and horny. “Told me what?” Sophia breathed as she lay back on the pillow, her long brown hair fanning out around her and her chest still rosy pink with the flush of orgasm.

“Told you I’d take you first before sleep today” I murmured, sinking into the pillow and yawning.

“Poor old man’s sleepy”

“Hey, less of the old”

Sophia pulled up the covers and ran soothing hands over my shoulders”

“Get some rest baby and thank you”

“For what?”

“Coming back to me and keeping your promise”

I could feel myself drifting into dreams already “mmm no problem, I love you Sophia, I’m so glad to be home”

When I woke up it was early afternoon and Sophia had made a spread of some of my favourite things for lunch, chief among which was a Peanut butter and jelly sandwich! I feasted and we talked about our plans for the time we now had together.  There were still restrictions in California due to Covid so there were limitations on how much we could do but truth be told my main priority was investing time with this newly forming family, seeing some other family and friends and taking some bike rides.  There would be John Wick training in the new year but until then, my time was my own.

 She Said

Once Keanu was back and we’d got over the initial rush of excitement to be together again, we settled into something of a routine.

He’d stay over a couple of nights a week and at least once a week I’d spend the day with him at his house, often just enjoying a decadent day between the sheets.  A Wednesday would be similar for us to a Sunday for a couple who didn’t have kids in the house bouncing out of bed at 7am!

Whilst we did have a routine of sorts there were still adjustments to be made. One of these took me a little by surprise and was partly triggered by a routine letter from my doctor.

Keanu was there as I opened it.

“Everything OK?

“Oh, yeah sure, it’s just about my coil. It’s going to expire soon so I have to go in for a consult”

“Oh and are you just going to get another one or ….?”

“Or what ?”

I had known this decision was coming soon and it had got me questioning whether it was the end of the road for me and babies. Some friends around me were still having more kids and that was one factor in me questioning it. The last new baby had arrived only a couple of weeks ago  - it was Julie’s so we’d gone to visit, taking a gift.  I got to cuddle her little boy Matthew too since we were in the bubble together. I remembered Keanu’s indulgent expression as I’d declared

“Babies just rule don’t they? Every home should have one! – but then again they are soooo much work!”  

I was only joking around but it was true, I did love babies and I couldn’t say for sure that I was content with declaring an end to my child-bearing years by getting another coil fitted for 10 or more years. I know you can take them out early but the fact that it could just go in and stay in did make that particular choice feel quite final. On the other hand, it was safe and super convenient and meant no condoms which I had never liked and most men I knew didn’t either. I wondered what Keanu thought of my comment. He was so great with my 2 kids  - I didn’t know whether he regretted not having kids of his own – I mean I guess that was kind of inevitable given what he had lost but I didn’t know if it was something he wanted still.

“Or …… do you ever wonder about having more kids?”

“Gosh, I don’t know”

“No? You weren’t thinking about it when cuddling baby Matthew the other day?”

I blushed.

“Well, maybe it crossed my mind that this decision was coming up”

“and?”

I took a deep breath

“And I wasn’t sure I was completely ready to …….. to close the door” I admitted.

 He Said

I sat at my desk, a blank piece of paper in front of me. I was about to embark on a methodical analysis of my thoughts on having a kid with Sophia. After she’d said she wasn’t sure she was ready to close the door, she asked me what I wanted.  Gosh, that took the wind out of my sails even though I had been the one to lift the lid by asking her about her coil. To be honest, it was the way she had been with baby Matthew that had started me thinking before that and had re-awakened in me something I’d not felt since my 40s: The longing to have a child of my own.

I started jotting down thoughts  - pros and cons and trying somehow to think about how positive or negative they each were. It was no good weighing a negative like sleepless nights against a positive like giving my mother grandchildren and my sisters a niece or nephew.  I was still pouring over my page, filling it with thoughts and adding circles around key words and phrases when Sophia popped her head around the corner to say hi. She’d just arrived after dropping the kids at Miranda’s.

“Hey what’s this?”  she asked leaning over my shoulder and kissing my cheek.

“Well, it’s me attempting to be rational, practical, you know about what we talked about yesterday”

“Oh, I see” she responded as she started to scan the page.

“you’re not too old” she exclaimed, picking up on one of the negatives I’d written.

“You sure ?– I mean I could be nearly 80 when they’re 20 something – my mom was 40 when I was 20!”

“Yeah but I’ll be 50 when Eva is 20  - 20 was very young to have a kid by today’s standards. What are the numbers next to each thing?”

“A scoring system” I said blushing a bit.

“Oh my god, how scientific are we getting!?”

“Like I said” I defended, “I’m trying to be pragmatic, weigh things in the balance which is hard when you have things like this in the mix”

I pointed to the biggest word on the page which I’d started to draw around. It was ‘Love’ and it was certainly the thing that counted most in the balance. The love that a child could bring into my life and everyone else in our families was why seeing Sophia with Matthew that day had sparked all those feelings. It didn’t really matter that much that I might need to do fewer projects, that I’d have less freedom and time to myself for creative projects, that we’d be building a complex family melding with the existing one. I think the only thing on the page I could see that made me hesitate were the words “Loss” , “risk and “disappointment”. How on earth could we embark on this path and accept that maybe Sophia wouldn’t get pregnant, what steps would we take if that was the case or would we just agree that if it didn’t happen on its own then that was the end of it. Or maybe she would conceive and then we’d lose the baby like Ava  ……… That option almost equalled the love one in terms of being the opposite in negative points.

“Come on,  take a break, have some lunch with me and then talk me through it OK? Maybe I should do the same task huh? We’ll work it out” she soothed, squeezing my hand.

She Said

Keanu was quiet through lunch. I could tell that this topic was really taxing  his head and heart and I felt guilty that my contraceptive choices had brought this to the fore. He reassured me that in fact, it was seeing me with baby Matthew that had really started the thoughts spinning round his mind.

Whilst I teased him about his giant mind map of pros and cons with its elaborate points system,  it was really useful as a prompt to talk it through. It didn’t strip emotion out of it, after all, how could it with the word love and all its layers of meaning sitting at the centre of the page, but it meant we did consider everything as best we could.

It was the first time we’d talked in any detail about Ava and that experience of loss. He told me most of it, leaning back in the lounger by the pool, eyes closed, holding my hand, an occasional tear leaking out. The horror of giving birth to a silent, dead baby filled me with sorrow for him and Jen and, if I’m honest, some fear for myself. Fear of being the one to do that to him again, fear of embarking on something that held such potential danger. It had never felt that way as I had innocently embarked on my pregnancies with Eva and Miguel.

By the time I had to leave that afternoon, we had almost got to our conclusion, but agreed to sleep on it for a few days. Ironically, he called this technique “incubation”! He said you didn’t actually have to actively think about it but letting it just sit in the back of your mind meant that you would process it and come to a conclusion that you were comfortable with.

 He Said

I wanted to pinch myself when I thought back to last Christmas Eve. The two years could not be more different. This evening, at nearly midnight, I found myself hovering outside Miguel’s bedroom door, checking for the steady sounds of him sleeping before sneaking in with his stocking containing a few presents for when he woke up.  Sophia was doing the same outside Eva’s door. As I crept up to his bed, looking at his angelic little face, almost black hair sticking out of the covers just a bit, I felt centred and certain about our decisions last month.

He and Eva were my family too now, not officially in law, but in practice they spent more time with me than with their Dad these days.  They were comfortable with me, even as an occasional disciplinarian not just a playmate. And that was enough for me and Sophia - if we added to the brood with a child of our own, then great; We weren’t making any efforts to stop a pregnancy  and we were both taking care of our health but we would not have any fertility interventions and would stop if  nothing had happened after a couple of years since Sophia was nearly 40.  We had both agreed that we didn’t want to push our luck too far with a risky pregnancy.

 She Said

My main memory of our first Christmas together was Keanu’s goofy grin that seemed to be permanently plastered on his face for the whole holidays.  It was there for all the special meals we shared, there when we all opened our gifts from him (purchased without PA help!) and there when he closed the bedroom door and came to make love to me each night, stifling the sounds of our passion from the kids with his kisses.

We were in a cocoon of love and tenderness - I knew work was on the horizon for him and that would change our rhythm again soon enough but for now, we could bask in each other’s love, enjoy the children together and carry a little spark of hope that I might be able to fall pregnant with his child before long.

Once the holidays were over, Keanu was back to developing John Wick 4 and starting a new programme of training.  We would have to endure some separation again once shooting started in April in New York but we were all decamping at the start to his apartment there since it would be the holidays then. We even had plans to decorate a bedroom each for the children so they would feel at home when we visited. I wanted them to feel safe and secure. It turned out that this was the one thing I couldn’t guarantee for them, now their mother was publicly dating a movie-star.

Session 9. PDPC: Investigation, Enforcement, and Cross-Border Enforcement, and Compliance to Accountability

Investigation and Enforcement in Singapore 

Before Investigation 

To understand the unique function of the PDPC as both the enforcer and judiciary which makes PDPC an unusual legal entity in Singapore. It is also important to appreciate the situation where PDPC would exercise its powers under the PDPA not to investigate or discontinue investigation. The aforesaid will enable lawyers to fully appreciate what to advise their clients when they may have potentially breached the Act, how PDPA interacts with sectoral laws (criminal and non-criminal) and how to manage the data breach. 

New Development: Mandatory Breach Notification, Compulsory Mediation

During Investigation 

Many a time, how an organisation should respond to a law enforcement agency during investigation depends on the authority bestowed to it by the law. For example, does an organisation need to respond to PDPC’s request for information and documents, or allow PDPC to enter its premises during investigation, and what conducts (such as falsifying evidence and making false statement) are prohibited by the PDPA. 

New Development: Offence for a person to fail to comply with an order to appear before PDPC/an inspector and provide his/her statement(s) in relation to an investigation 

After Investigation 

After investigation, the pivotal concern of organisation is PDPC’s ability to sanction it, and the organisation’s rights to appeal. The sanction will be compared with the General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (“EU GDPR”) to understand whether PDPC’s ability to sanction organisation in today’s globalized economy is considered adequate. In addition, questions like whether an individual will be subject to the sanction and does an organisation have any defence if the employee acted negligently or beyond the scope of employment will be addressed. 

New Development: Accountable for Serious Mishandling of Personal Data, Offence (to Access, Correct or Port Data Without Authorisation), Increased Financial Penalty, Voluntary Statutory Undertaking 

Private Right of Action 

The private right of action under section 32 of the PDPA will be compared with the investigation and sanction powers of the PDPC including the advantages and disadvantages of the two. 

Cross-Border Enforcement 

The flow of data is changing as a result of digital economy and frontier technologies such as cloud computing and Internet of Things. As Singapore’s e-commerce market grow, so does the amount of personal data flowing in and out, exposing it to greater risks. Many data breaches today are of a global scale. It is therefore crucial to analyse how DPAs can pursue the matter and legal and practical limitations faced by DPAs in the event of a global data breach, and the ability of DPAs including PDPC to pursue liability beyond their geographical boundary. This will be assessed with the one-stop shop and extraterritorial rights under the GDPR. 

Compliance to Accountability 

Many jurisdictions have claimed to be shifting from a compliance regime to accountability regime. However, what exactly is compliance or accountability in relation to data protection or privacy? Although accountability gained momentum in the recent years especially in Singapore, it is an old data protection principle that first found its footing in OEDC Guidelines on the Protection of Privacy and Transborder Flows of Personal Data (“1980 OECD Guidelines”). It was subsequently found in important framework and legislations such as the APEC Privacy Framework 2004, Hong Kong Personal Data Ordinance 1996 and EU GDPR. 

Accountability plays a pivotal role when it comes to cross-border transfer as its origin but the principle has slowly evolved and embedded itself in many legislations including the PDPA and the GDPR. This is especially so when it comes to mechanisms that will enable an organisation to demonstrate accountability before, during and after investigation (which will be covered from weeks 10-12). It is therefore critical for any data protection lawyers to understand how accountability will affect the organisation’s liability under the PDPA. 

New Development: Accountability Strengthen by Mandatory Breach Notification, Personal Liability, Voluntary Undertaking and Compulsory Mediation 

Preparatory Instructions: 

1. Is PDPC’s discretion whether to investigate a data breach coupled with its authority to issue discretion (including financial penalty) similar to prosecutorial discretion plus judicial function. What other government agencies have similar function?

5. Understand the types of sanctions, whether they apply to individuals and when an organisation can excuse itself from employee’s actions? 

6. What are the recourse for an organisation or a complainant if they are dissatisfied with the investigation outcome? 

7. Compare the private right of action under the PDPA and investigation by PDPC. What are the advantages and disadvantages? 

8. Understand the limitations of cross-border investigation and enforcement. 

9. Understand the cross-border enforcement mechanisms, and advantages and disadvantages of those mechanisms. 

10. What is accountability and how is it different from a compliance data protection regime? 

11. What are the provisions in the PDPA that relate to accountability?

12. Measures for organisation to display accountability when there is a data breach (brief discussion only as in-depth analysis will be in week 10). 

13. Read Re National University of Singapore and Re Singapore Telecommunications Limited and Tech Mahindra and determine whether the principle of accountability had underlined the decision of the Commission in those two cases (brief discussion only as in-depth analysis will be in week 10).

Spy Fu

If you are looking for a tool to help you spy on your competitors then SpyFu is it. It not only lets you check up on the keywords others are ranking for, but it is also a great tool for checking in with how your own site is doing.

It will let you know all of the keywords you (or your competitor is ranking for) as well as the position you are ranked, and how much search volume that keyword is bringing you in each week. If you are planning to do some SEM paid ads then this is really useful as a way of checking what your competitors are paying for.

One of my favorite features of this SEO tool is that it lets you know the keywords you are almost on page 1 of google for and the keywords you have made page one for. You can then use all of this information to make improvements to your website.

SEMRush

Now I know so many professionals in SEO sware by SEMRush. But I personally hate it. I’ve had it forced on me by a few clients and I can see it’s valued, especially for big marketing agencies as it is a really powerful tool. But its also expensive, and I personally find it really difficult to navigate.

But there are some free tools you can take advantage of, plus they have a 7-day trial which you should 100% take advantage of!

KW Finder

If you need an ok tool that’s free to use then KW finder is a good place to start. It is very basic. And doesn’t really give off important things like search volume, or how difficult it is to rank for those keywords? But it is good to place to get some ideas that you might not have thought of from.

Ubersugest

This is Neil Patel’s tool and I’m really not a fan. I have used this in the past but more for ideas for SEM campaigns I’ve been writing for. For SEO it’s not all that great in my opinion as I’ve found that the information is pretty off.

The only thing I’d say it is good for is local SEO, it has a feature that will let you find local keywords that many other tools don’t have.

Answer The Public

This is one of my favorite tools for content marketing. It is basically a database of questions that people type into Google. What this is useful for is writing great content that solves people’s pain points and answers their questions.

Google Key Word Planner

Pretty much all of the SEO tools out there are going to be pulling their information from Google, so you can skip the middleman and go direct to google for your answers. The tool is more designed for people looking for keywords to use in their paid google ads campaigns. So to even be able to use this tool you will first need to set up a google ads account. Once you have set up the account then you can start searching.

It won’t give you as much data as other tools all you get from it is the keyword, the average monthly clicks, and if the competition is high, or low.

Google Trends

If you are in the content marketing game than Google trends should be on your favorites bar. This is the tool that will make sure your finger is firmly on the pulse of what is hot right now and trending on Google. Keeping an eye on this and being responsive by creating on Trent content is going to help you get ahead of your competitors.

Google Search Consult

A good friend and mentor taught me a trick on here that seriously changed my SEO game. I was able to increase my traffic exponentially just by monitoring the keywords that I’m getting a high number of impressions for but a low click-through rate. If that is the case then there is clearly something amiss in your Title and Meta Description. So give them an edit and make people want to click on your link above anyone else.

MOZ

I love MOZ and I like their pro account, it’s just a lot of money to spend if you only need it to keep an eye on your own SEO. And in all honesty, if you are going to spend this kind of money on an SEO tool, then I’d spend it on SEMRush.

Even without a pro account, there are a lot of great free features that you can make the most of. MOZ gives you 10 searches per month that you can use to do competitor research or check on your site, or your client’s site. I am very careful about how I use my 10. From these searches, you can find out about keywords, backlinks and a lot more. And they will let you download a full report on the findings.

Most people know about MOZ because of a little thing called a DA, this stands for Domain Authority and people go crazy for it. Basically it’s a figure that lets you know how much authority your website is. I have had so many arguments with people (bloggers) about this. Having a high DA is important, but it’s not the most important thing, and when you have a new website it really isn’t something you should be overly stressing about.

Google doesn’t care about your DA, I’m going to say that again. Google doesn;t care about your DA. It’s the other way around. MOZ calculates your DA based on how much Google loves you. It’s important to keep that in mind. Focus on getting Google to like you, and your DA will rise with time.

Keysearch

Keysearch is my tool of choice. It’s affordable, easy to use, and it does (almost) everything I need to do. For around $15 per month, you run up to 100 searches to find keywords per day. You can save keywords in a list and export them. It tells you helpful information about the top searches for your keywords so you can make sure you are writing content that is going to be better than theirs.

You can also use it for searching for keywords to use on YouTube and other search engines than Google.

Like MOZ you can run competitor analysis, URL explorers and they even have a nifty tool that will analyze your content and give you tips on how you can improve it to get it ranking by comparing your content to the top-ranking content.

For example, if each of the top 3 posts for that search term has over 2000 words and yours is only 1000, then it will tell you that you need to write more.

Sitebulb

I love Sitebulb. It is what I personally use to run off SEO audit reports for clients. It does a thorough search of the entire website and then gives you all of the data that you need to fix your internal SEO issues. It lets you know about broken links, redirects, missing ALT tags and Meta Descriptions, plus site speed and so much more. It is a super powerful reporting tool and I would be lost without it

If you are learning about SEO to help improve your webpage then it is not a wise investment for you as the cost is $39 a month and really you will only need to run this report every quarter. Plus if you don’t know a lot about SEO then one looks at these reports and you are likely to break into a cold sweat. That’s where I come in.

I actually offer SEO auditing as a service so I can run these reports for you and then I will break down all of the information you need so you can understand it and show you how to fix these things yourself, or you can just pay me and I can fix it all for you!

YOAST

If you are on WordPress then this is a must-have plugin. Seriously, if you don’t have it downloaded yet then go do it now. It will change your life.

I would say that my personal journey started with this plugin. I learned about SEO because I was blogging and I’d had some luck with organic traffic from some posts. It was pure luck and there was no skill involved at all. But when I started using YOAST I started being able to see how I was doing from the traffic lights. I was obsessed with getting green lights. Whenever I got a red light I would fix the problem and through doing so over and over again I started writing better and being able to get these magic green lights without som many edits.

Then I learned more about SEO and realized the YOAST green lights aren’t always a good thing. In fact, more often than not they encourage Keyword stuffing. But I’ll cover that in another post.

What I love about this plugin is that it will let you enter the meta description and an SEO title, which can be different from your article or page title, very useful. Plus it will give you a good indication of how well you have used your main keyword. I think this plugin is especially useful for anyone new to SEO.

Meditation on Hatori, Snow, and Dark Backgrounds in Fruits Basket: Part 2

Like before, Fruits Basket angst below the cut. Unlike the previous part, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS AS WELL below the cut for anime-onlys and people who haven’t read volumes 5 or 10 of the manga yet.

From last time, we know that snow set against a dark background signals Hatori/Kana angst and pain.

Here’s another example I found of Hatori’s thoughts on the situation with Kana, from volume 5 chapter 26. This lines up with season 1 episode 15 of the 2019 anime reboot, where Hatori likewise says that he doesn’t want to see Kana again, but that he simply wants (and prays for) her to be happy. (This man is SO SELFLESS, WHY??! ;_; T__T)

However, his reasoning for why he doesn’t want to see her again is also important, and does not quite line up with the anime reboot version. I know some people thought the anime explained this better, but I think the version in the manga ties way better to later events. We learn that Kana’s heart would grow ill (and that the ill condition of Kana’s heart is linked to our danger sign of white-snow-on-a-black-background), and that, similar to a sickness, that illness would spread. Stay tuned for why that’s relevant.

In the meantime, Ayame comments in the same chapter that Hatori seems to be the only one left behind, taking on all of the pain from Hatori and Kana’s ~break-up.

But Hatori’s not the only one left behind….

That’s right, my friends!

I GET TO FANGIRL ABOUT MAYU-CHAN-SENSEI THIS TIME!!!! and talk about the angst in her life. But also fangirl about my fave!!

Actually, in an interesting sort of irony compared to the scene in manga chapter 26, Shigure tells Mayuko in manga chapter 56 a) that she’s the only one left behind (of her, Kana, and Hatori) and b) that Hatori’s dating again—two intentional, calculated lies—but in doing so, really emphasizes some of her most positive qualities: her loyalty, determination, selflessness, and strength.

(Also interesting: Ayame lied unintentionally in chapter 26 by speaking a bit flamboyantly, aggressively, and perhaps carelessly [it makes me a bit sad because, come on Ayame, you and Mayu-kun are friends!! She’s the one who accidentally let slip about parent-teacher conferences, so you must talk to each other at least sometimes!], whereas Shigure lied deliberately in chapter 56, but did so very calmly and intentionally.)

But getting back to my main point, like Hatori, Mayu also feels pained at the thought of Hatori and Kana’s suffering and unhappiness: in addition to her thoughts three pictures above (”If there was a way to bring back the happiness between you two, then without a doubt, I would have tried my best…to find it,” emphases added.),

she starts crying after it hits her how happy Hatori and Kana used to be but now Kana’s forgotten it all.

Moreover…

(on top of the reminder that she just wants Kana, her best friend, to be happy,) YES, MAYU’S MEMORIES ARE ALSO OVERLAID WITH SNOW SET ON A DARK BACKGROUND. UH-OH.

Like, I love hate love how Takaya-sensei doesn’t even have to put words in that middle panel. You just know what happened off-screen at that point, between the right and left panels O.O and it wasn’t good….

On a very temporarily more optimistic note, I’m really happy that Mayu convinced Shigure to sneak her in so that she could visit her (probably really isolated and lonely and also DEVASTATINGLY guilty-feeling) best friend!! So devoted ;_;

Though, that contrast between the Kana of the right panel and the Kana of the left panel…yikes ://// It’s very clear that she’s not doing so well. (random side note: I wanna know who put the flowers next to Kana!! Was it Hatori? Aghhhhh that’s so cute and sweet but also painful)

Speaking of not doing so well…

…remember ^this?

Guess who else gets depicted with that kind of snow.

Yep, that’s right. Kana also gets shown with the fairy light-like kind of snow set against a gray background. But here, the snow looks much less like nice fairy lights.

No, here, it looks like Kana’s infected.

Kana’s covered with circular dots that look similar to chicken pox, her speech bubbles have irregular shapes, she’s looking at her hand like “How could my hand have done such a thing?” (as if she’s the one responsible for Hatori’s eye injury), her face is shadowed, she keeps breaking off her speech and repeating words…

As Hatori put it in chapter 12: “It was the curse.”

It’s a very interesting way of depicting the effects of the curse and who’s gotten infected by this particular manifestation of it. In the above picture, we see that Kana continues to be infected by it.

But we see that Mayu, too, gets transferred some of that hurt and pain (right hand panels—and why wouldn’t she? Her best friend is miserable, and she doesn’t know how to fix that, and she just wanted her to be happy, but that’s not happening), and that the effects in fact expand to take on their surroundings as well, despite their being inside a building. 

Hmmmm. Let’s look back at Hatori’s thoughts from the first picture: “Regret and self-pity won’t leave, slowly spreading bigger, like a stain[...]it would tire Kana’s heart,” (emphases added).

That is exactly what is happening above.

And that is why I think the manga version did it better, and why I really admire Hatori-san’s ability to read situations and people. (He can see through many of Shigure’s shenanigans, he advises Ayame on how to get through to Yuki but also to be patient, he brilliantly and succinctly explains what the heck was up with Hiro acting like an irritating bratty punk to Tohru, and so on and so forth.)

Connecting back to my original conception of those circles set against gray backgrounds as snow, perhaps what Hatori thought about being willing to be surrounded by snow for the rest of his life makes more sense now. He doesn’t want anyone else to be turned into snow or be frozen by surrounding snow like he is/has been. But if Kana’s condition had continued deteriorating, like it was above, he would not have been able to stop that freezing infection from continuing to spread. (I can see why he decided to erase her memories of him. Even though that thought really hurts.)

And geez, how sadly ironically fitting that the snow take on an illness-type quality, when both Hatori and Kana, probably the two main victims of it in the manga, are in the medical field. As Hatori’s character description in the Tokyopop manga translations reads: “The only thing he can’t cure is his broken heart.” (Ow. Whyyyyy.)

This reminds me of another Tumblr post someone made about how the Sohma curse negatively affected so many people’s lives, not just those of the Sohma’s, and these pictures (the one above and the one below) give some of the best proof of that.

Snow. Taking over almost everything.

What struck me most about this page is how the snow wasn’t just in the center dark black panel, but how it was dotted all over the right-hand lighter background panels as well, showing how the curse and the resultant unhappiness of Kana and Hatori have infected and affected others’ lives as well. Mayu and Shigure are suffering, too—they want their best friends to be happy, which evidently isn’t happening at this point. Memory-Shigure even looks mildly concerned for Mayu in the bottom-most panel on the right, which is when you know things are really bad.

However, the left-hand panel is brighter again. The memory erasure’s happened, then. And as present-day Shigure helpfully reminds Mayu later in chapter 56, the temporary fix [for Kana at least] gets a more permanent one now that she’s married to someone who definitively is not Hatori.

Shigure then tells Mayu that Hatori’s also moved on and healed—which, though it’s not true, does encourage her to reflect upon what she wants (not someone else—herself, being selfish for once; huh, it’s like a meaner version of when Kyo told Tohru it was fine for her to be selfish every once in a while too), and seems to help her decide that, yes, she does want to search for her own happiness now, and no, it won’t be with Shigure or out of loneliness this time.

(Mayu, you’re so strong. You go, girl.)

Actually, the scenes with Mayu and Kana and the infectious snow/sign of curse-unhappiness were the reasons why I wanted to make this series of posts in the first place. I noticed after like my tenth reread of chapters 56 and 57 how similar some of those scenes were to those in chapters 10 and 12…and the rest, my friends, is history. xD If this wasn’t too angsty for you, there’ll be more next time (and probably the time after that, too)!

The purpose of this report is to provide the AARP with an audit of its current social media strategy, outlining its strengths and weaknesses, followed by recommendations for future improvement. 

Introduction 

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is the largest non-profit organization in America dedicated to “empower[ing] people to choose how they live as they age” (AARP, 2019). This organization was chosen for a social media audit because with population aging becoming one of the twenty-first century’s greatest challenges (United Nations, 2019), the AARP is an important tool used to address the various issues society faces as we age. This social media report will be conducted by providing an overview of the AARP’s objectives as an organization, as well as its intended target audience. This overview will then be followed by an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the AARP’s current web presence. This will include an evaluation of the organization’s Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Website content. 

Overview, Objectives and Audience

Overall, the AARP’s mission with its social media strategy is to be at the front of people’s minds when it comes time to start thinking about retirement. In fact, the company states on its various social media accounts that the “AARP is leading a revolution in the way people view and live life after 50” (AARP, 2019). The AARP’s primary audience consists of individuals who are 50+ years old. In order to increase public awareness of the organization, the AARP focuses its social strategy on creating content for their website and social media accounts. Rather than relying on links and hashtags to get their audiences to interact with posts, the AARP chooses to instead use videos and photos to make an impression on its viewers. 

Methodology

In order to conduct a social media audit on the AARP, the organization’s website, as well as its Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram accounts were observed. As a result, the following are the findings from this research: 

Twitter: The AARP’s Twitter account has approximately 131K followers, 3.8K likes, and has posted around 56.3K tweets since it joined in October 2009.

Facebook: The AARP’s Facebook page has over 3000 posts with around 1.9 million followers and over 2 million likes.

YouTube: The AARP joined YouTube in 2006 and has approximately 110K subscribers, 836 videos and a total of over 41 million views.

Instagram: The AARP does not currently have an Instagram account. 

Additionally, the website SocialSearcher.com was used in order to track the AARP’s online brand image. As a result, it was observed that 29% of the organization’s online mentions were positive, 10% were negative, and 61% were neutral (Social Searcher, 2019). These statistics show that there is room for improvement when it comes to the AARP generating positive online feedback regarding its brand, especially on Twitter, where 22% of its mentions were negative. 

What the AARP Does Effectively

General: The AARP brand is consistently represented across all of its online platforms. Each of its social media accounts, as well as its website, display the same logo and description: “AARP is leading a revolution in the way people view & live life after 50.” Through staying socially consistent, the AARP is able to effectively reach a large audience and create strong brand loyalty. 

Twitter: With its 131K followers, the AARP’s presence on Twitter is one of the organization’s strengths when it comes to its social media strategy. The AARP tweets several posts a day, covering various topics such as the best places to find jobs for workers aged 65 and over. Each Twitter post includes an engaging image or video, as well as a link for further information on a topic, such as to the AARP’s Fraud Watch Network on their website. 

Facebook: The AARP’s Facebook page is similar to its Twitter account, where the organization posts many of the same images and videos regarding anything from quotes about growing old, informational videos, or links to articles on the AARP website. The AARP’s Facebook account has a significant number of followers (i.e. around 1.9 million) and does an excellent job at generating conversations among its audience, such as with its post about the importance of staying hydrated as you age, which generated 9.3K likes, 311 comments, and 1.8K shares. 

YouTube: The AARP’s YouTube channel is another one of the organization’s strengths when it comes to its social media strategy. This channel excels at creating engaging content that appeals to all generations, through its various video series (e.g. “Fishing for Advice”, “Never Gets Old”, etc.) and many celebrity collaborations (such as with Jimmy Kimmel, Paul Rudd, and Amy Poehler). The AARP effectively uses its YouTube channel to connect young and older generations by comparing cultures, offering advice, and sharing stories. 

What the AARP Does Ineffectively

Website: The AARP’s website is cluttered, overwhelming, and difficult to navigate. The organization’s website covers over 15 different topics, including: Member Benefits, Health, Family Caregiving, Work and Jobs, Scams and Fraud, Retirement, Social Security, Travel, Money, Home & Family, Entertainment, Politics & Society, Auto, Videos, Podcasts, Games, and Food. As a result of this vast list of service offerings, the AARP’s website provides visitors with a chaotic and unorganized array of information. Despite the organization’s focus on seniors, it is clear that its website was not created with the needs of this demographic in mind. Seniors are not typically digitally fluent (Tsai, Shillair & Cotten, 2017), and so it is likely they would find this website complicated, confusing, and frustrating. 

Instagram: Currently, the AARP does not have an Instagram account. Since the AARP’s social media strategy is heavily reliant on image and video content, Instagram is a great platform to share this content with a large audience. 

Recommendations

There are several recommendations that I would propose to the AARP concerning its current social media strategy. 

With the AARP’s current website being cluttered and overwhelming, I would recommend that the organization completely restructure its website while focusing on the principles of design (Rawal, 2018). For example, the AARP could consider increasing the website’s negative space and balance, as well as adding more buttons to the webpages in order to organize the abundance of articles and blog posts that are currently cluttering the website’s visual space. Through remodeling its website, the AARP can create a better user experience for its senior audience when interacting with the brand, and thus simultaneously communicate its messages in a more clear and simple way. 

While the AARP is successful in creating original content for their Twitter account, the organization is falling short of actually creating conversations with their audiences. A typical post on the AARP’s Twitter page generates around 0-2 comments and typically only 1-20 retweets or likes; statistics that are not reflective of the organization’s 131K followers. According to @sproutsocial, it is important for organizations to generate relationships, not just followers (Barnhart, 2018). Therefore, two recommendations that I would give the AARP to improve its community engagement is to increase its usage of hashtags and reply to comments. While many of its posts include links back to the AARP website, hashtags can help increase follower engagement on certain topics, as well as attract new followers. Additionally, by replying to comments, the AARP can start conversations with its followers and build lasting relationships.

While not having an Instagram account may make sense for the current senior demographic who are often not very active on Instagram (Kats, 2018), the AARP’s goal is ultimately to become the go-to organization for when people start thinking about aging. While the AARP currently targets a senior audience, the AARP should also target those who are looking into old-age care for other family members or for themselves in the future. So, part of the organization’s social media strategy should be targeted towards this younger demographic. Therefore, I would recommend that the organization create an Instagram account in order to gain an audience among the Millennial generation, who are among the most active users of Instagram (Kats, 2018). While they may not be the current target audience of the AARP, as they grow older, they will become the caretakers of the elderly and will one day become seniors themselves who could benefit from the AARP’s various service offerings.
