You can’t buy the Seagull in the US. But I bet you wish you could.

A small hatchback around the size of a Mini Cooper, the Seagull is a fast-charging electric car and claims a range of up to 250 miles [...] BYD, its Chinese manufacturer, claims it can go from 30 percent to 80 percent charged in a half-hour using a DC plug. It’s hardly a luxury car but it’s well-equipped, with a power driver’s seat and cruise control. “If I were looking for an inexpensive commuter car … this would be perfect,” veteran car journalist John McElroy said after taking a drive.

The best part? Its base model costs about $10,700 in China.

That’s about a third of the cost of the cheapest EV you can buy in the US. In South America, it’s a little pricier, but still fairly affordable, at under $24,000 for a top-trim version. Even in Europe, you can get an entry-level BYD for under €30,000. These are absolutely screaming deals — exactly the kind of products that could turbocharge our transition away from gas and toward electric vehicles.[...]

The problem for Americans? The Biden administration is hell-bent on preventing you from buying BYD’s product, and if Donald Trump returns to office, he is likely to fight it as well.

That’s because the BYD cars are made in China, and both Biden and Trump are committed to an ultranationalist trade policy meant to keep BYD’s products out. [...] Shipments to Europe have increased astronomically; Chinese companies sold 0.5 percent of EVs in Europe in 2019 but they’re already over 9 percent as of last year. Companies like BYD make cheap, reasonably good-quality cars people are eager to buy.

In 2018, Trump imposed, and Biden has since continued, a special 25 percent tax on Chinese-made autos, on top of the ordinary 2.5 percent tax on foreign-made cars.

That has so far prevented BYD and its Chinese peers from trying to enter the US market. US customer tastes are different enough that Chinese manufacturers would probably prefer to make cars tailored to them — but US policy has been so hostile toward cheap Chinese EVs that so far, the companies haven’t wanted to bother.

So, the result is that we’re left out of the bounty of cheap EV options created by BYD and others. “If you’re a consumer right now, the best place to be right now is China, because you have the best choice of EVs,” Ilaria Mazzocco, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and an expert on Chinese EVs, says.[...]

Still, China’s price advantage is big enough that even the extreme Trump-Biden import tax might not be enough to deter companies like BYD from entering the US market. Even with the tariffs, Chinese cars might be cheaper than their rivals. “Subsidies most likely won’t be enough; Mr. Biden will need to impose [more] trade restrictions,” climate journalist Robinson Meyer predicted recently. The Biden administration is already making noise about imposing even more draconian taxes or trade restrictions against these vehicles. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has described Chinese-made cars as a national security threat, and recently announced an investigation into the vehicles’ data collection abilities and the possibility they could send movement data to Beijing.

On the one hand, Biden is offering Americans up to $7,500 per vehicle to buy EVs (provided they meet certain made-in-North America rules). On the other hand, he’s imposing massive taxes to keep Americans from buying EVs. It’s a bizarre policy that makes no sense from a climate perspective.[...]

[The Biden Administration] has proven shockingly willing to sabotage its own climate policy if it gets to stick it to the Chinese in the process.

“There’s almost an across-the-board apprehension about Chinese EVs, even though they would make an important contribution to [lower] CO2 emissions,” Gary Clyde Hufbauer, a veteran trade expert at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, says.[...]

Realistically, Helveston argues, BYD might not sell something like the Seagull in the US because it’s smaller than most cars Americans buy. They’d probably build plants in the US instead, or its free-trade zone partners Canada and Mexico, to build vehicles tailored for Americans. “If you’re going to really enter a market, you have to make it locally,” Helveston explains. “US automakers like GM sell and make millions of cars in China to sell in China.” BYD would do the same. Indeed, it’s already reportedly scouting sites for factories in Mexico.

If they ever were to set up shop in North America, BYD and other Chinese car companies would still have a major price advantage versus American EVs. They have years more experience and a much more successful track record of building batteries and EVs at low cost.

“Part of why they’re so successful is they’ve been thinking outside the box on cost reduction for a long time,” Mazzocco says. They took the “opposite of the Tesla approach”: starting not with luxury vehicles but ultra-cheap cars fit for taxi fleets and not much else, and constantly improving their early inexpensive prototypes. The result is that Chinese firms have gotten extremely good at making inexpensive EVs, at a time when Ford, by contrast, lost $28,000 for every EV it sold in 2023.[...]

“If you have more affordable EVs in the United States, no matter where you come from,” Gopal says, “that’s better for the climate.”

Still, the Biden administration reportedly wants to restrict Chinese car companies’ access to the US even if they do set up shop in North America. Bloomberg reported earlier this month that the Biden administration is formulating rules that would limit US sales of Chinese-made parts, even if they’re in vehicles ultimately assembled in the US or Mexico.[...]

But the Biden administration’s objections to Chinese EVs are also ideological. The Biden administration represents the victory of a protectionist, trade-skeptical wing of the Democratic party that was relegated to the sidelines during the Clinton and Obama years.[...]

Barriers to importing cheap cars make inflation worse and reduce the real incomes of the middle class.

Not only are the administration and other left-leaning institutions opposed to Chinese EVs, but hardline conservatives at places like the Heritage Foundation are calling for outright bans on Chinese EVs as well. Their rationale is security, another theme the Biden administration evokes often. On Thursday, the Commerce Department announced it was beginning a process to “investigate the national security risks of … PRC-manufactured technology in [internet-connected] vehicles.”

I turned 45 in early December. My bedroom TV was needing replaced. I previous had an Insignia fire edition TV from Best buy. I had it a long time and some of the apps were starting to not be compatible because the TV was so old. It also didn't have enough external storage and it had stopped receiving updates. I was shopping for tvs around black Friday. I had been looking for a long time. At first I purchased an Element Xumo TV on a Cyber Monday sale. That tv had a lot of issues and it was out of stock when I needed to return it. I had chosen that tv because it was 50" and my previous TV was 43". I didn't have room for much bigger than that. So when I returned it.... Most of the tvs that had been on sale for black Friday and cyber Monday were sold out or the price had gone up. I noticed the TCL Google tvs had the price stay down. My first smart TV was when TCL first came out with Roku tvs many years ago and I felt like that TV didn't last that long. That was the main reason I hadn't bought a TCL TV after that. I had used a plug on for my old TV that had Google Chromecast on it and I liked it. That was the only way I could use my old tv. So Sam's Club, Best Buy, and Target all had the tv I bought for the same price. My mom has a Sam's Club membership so I ordered a TV on her account with my debit card. The main reason I chose them....it had the longest return policy of the 3 and we go to Sam's Club at least once a month in a nearby city and I could return it there if need be. My only big issue was the sound wasn't that great despite all the reviews saying that people were using it without a sound bar and it still sounded great. My old TV didn't need a sound bar and I didn't have a sound bar. I was trying to keep the cost down. I noticed Amazon was having a sale on sound bars so I thought I would read the reviews and get the cheapest one I could that didn't have horrible reviews. There were 2 choices and they were the same brand. One was 30ish dollars and the other one was 40ish dollars. I went with the cheaper one. People seemed to like it better anyhow. At first I didn't know how to hook it up and get it to work. I looked at the instructions and I still didn't know. I found sound help about it online. It's great despite the lower cost. You should check out this brand (Saiyin) if you need a lower cost sound bar. Here is the one I bought:

Next I needed a new coaxial cable because mine was in horrible shape. We use an outside antenna. It's mostly just for watching local broadcasts from Springfield, Missouri in case of a tornado. I just replaced the coaxial cable. I bought this one from amazon. It's way more solid than my old one. For a little more I could have gotten the same brand with L shaped ends. I didn't notice that before. You can buy this cable in all different lengths and they have a weatherproof version also. Here is the one I bought. You can see the brand if you need a solid coaxial cable at a good price:

Next my Ethernet cable was old and the ends started to look bad. It was getting loose and falling out. I bought a new cable. This one was also really solid and a good price on amazon. It comes in many colors and every color is in all different lengths. I was going to get yellow or some color that shows up well but I went with purple instead. I noticed this brand has a variety of cables on Amazon. Here is the one I got and it's a cat 8 which was an upgrade for me:

Last but not least.... I always lose my remotes. They fall between my bed and the wall or wherever. I bought a second remote so I would have a backup and I bought glow in the dark protective cover for them. I found the glow in the dark cover on Amazon. Sikai was the better of the 2 that I bought but shipping was slow. They also had other colors available. Here it is:

My only other thing I wanted was to get a TV that was future proof with the tuner. Unfortunately there aren't many tvs available with the newer ATSC 3.0 Nextgen tv tuners built in.... Especially at the smaller size. This tv didn't have the newer tuner and I knew that when I bought it. It was also a little under $200 and tvs with the new tuner are much higher. It might not be necessary to have the newer tuner for antenna tv. I might have this TV for before I need it anyhow. They do sell external atsc 3.0/nextgen tv tuners but the cost is the same as the tv or higher in the few models out there. They do however have a DVR storage kind of similar to the Tablo device that my mom uses. I'm going to wait until newer comes come out and maybe the price goes down. That of I buy it at all.

At my house we are getting our TV service right now with YouTube tv. My brother lives here and he is a subscriber. We all have profiles on there. It has a lot of the channels and most of the broadcast stuff I would watch and some cable channels. It also includes an unlimited amount that you can record or have in your library. The only issue is it runs a minute or so behind so it's not helpful if there is local tornado coverage. That's why I still use an antenna.

So YouTube TV doesn't have a few channels I watch so I subscribe to the FRNDLY TV app. At first Youtube TV didn't have the Hallmark channel and I watch When Calls the Heart. Now YouTube tv has the Hallmark channels. FRNDLY still has a variety of channels that we don't get on my brother's YouTube tv package... I watch GAC Family, The History Channel, A&E, Lifetime Movies and others on FRNDLY. I do a yearly subscription and it's very inexpensive for a streaming app with live channels and the ability to record the shows. I had to cancel all the other streaming channels I had because I don't have a job right now. My brother subscribes to all the major streaming apps and they are signed into the living room TV. I have some of the logged in on my TV and tablet and such but some of the services have restrictions on how many devices can be logged in or about password sharing. My brother and I live in the same house so it should be different than sharing between like a parent and a child or with a spouse or something.

Note: We need to replace the outside antenna. We've had this one 9 or 10 years and it gets a lot of wind and such at it. We saw one we might get in Amazon and we want to replace the pole that it's ok. We run a really long coaxial cable from it that goes to the basement where there is a coaxial splitter (it also maybe needs replaced).… So we staying run a coaxial cable from it to the kitchen for the kitchen tv and the living room for the living room TV and one to 2 of the 3 bedrooms. The coaxial that goes to my brother's bedroom broke but he doesn't watch antenna tv anymore. He only plays video games on his tv. He watches all the streaming channels but he mostly does that on his iPad. So there isn't a good way to run a coaxial cable to my bedroom so far. I put a 2 way splitter at the living room TV and I run my coaxial cable to it. I know splitting weakens the signal but generally it has worked out for us. Now it's not so great even after adjusting the outside antenna. Al the other social cables may need replaced along with the antenna. We are going to wait a month or so before maybe doing that because of the cost and it will be nicer weather to put an antenna up hopefully. We can get everything we need from Amazon for 1 day delivery anyhow.

Something you can try. When my old TV couldn't update some of the app and it ran out of internal storage.... I found a cheap fix at Walmart. I decided to just go with a cheap streaming box and I found that they came out with a store brand ONN streaming box that had Google Chromecast on it. I had been wanting to try chromecast before I committed to buy a tv with it. All our smart TVs before had Roku or the old one I had in my bedroom before had Amazon Fire tv built in. This streaming box came out last spring or summer and it sells at Walmart in many stores and for shipping on their app for $19.99. It still works great. We have put it on the living room TV which is the next to get replaced because it's a Hisense Roku 2017 model. My mom doesn't like anything other than the Roku set up. She is almost 75 and she wants to stick with what she knows. Unfortunately there aren't as many brands that have Roku built in any more and they hardly come out. So far none of them have the newer tuner that we have seen. Hisense mostly makes tvs with Google Chromecast built in now from what we have seen.

I was just reminded the other day that the website hasn’t featured a standout example of a muscle car for sale for some time. No excuses, as we have simply been focusing on other stuff. So, when I came across this 1969 Dodge Coronet A12 Super Bee which is gathering quite a bit of interest online, it was worth looking at a bit closer.

The 1969 Dodge Coronet A12 Super Bee came at roughly the height of the golden era of muscle cars. It was essentially a rebadged Plymouth Road Runner, with the ‘Super Bee’ name coming from the B Body design and a lower priced version than its Roadrunner counterpart. The A12 version, which you can note from the ‘M’ fifth digit in the the VIN number. The Super Bee was also 65lbs. heavier than the Roadrunner and had a 117-inch wheelbase, compared to the Roadrunner with 116 inches. Externally, the Super Bees had bumblebee tail stripe, a better grille, a chrome plated Bee medallion badge and taillight ornaments. These A12 M-code cars were an option which added mechanical and visual components to make it a cut above the rest.

Items included in the A12 package included a ‘six-pack’ three, two-barrel Holley carbs., 440ci. V8 with 390bhp, 4:10 gear-ratio Dana 60 axle, the option of automatic or four speed manual transmission and lift off black hood. Other small engine items were added, along with 11 inch drum brakes, black steel rims and 15 inch high performance G-70 tires. Only 1,907 examples were made in 1969, making one of these cars a bona fides rarity.

A quick scoot around online and the Super Bee registry says 826 examples of the WM23 Hardtop 440 Six Pack Engine / Manual 4spd Transmission were produced in 1969. Digging a bit deeper and this seems to be the same car on another website showing a few more details.

This listing doesn’t come with loads of details, as it’s the usual, ‘if you know what you’re looking at, you know what it’s worth’ scenario. The listing does say that the car comes with the original broadcast sheet and the condition is show quality. The listing also says that the car has been featured in ‘Hemmings Muscle Machine Magazine’ and any prospective buyers can have a live virtual walk around via facetime with the listing having simply loads of pictures and a video which you can see below.

The exterior of the car comes in R4 Bright Red with an equally bright red interior which does look immaculate. The same goes for the exterior and engine bay, with even shots of the underneath not showing any rust spots apart from a tiny bit on the rear leaf springs.

As for being a worthy buy or not, there are three other 1969 Super Bee A12s for sale on eBay currently. This one is the cheapest of the lot, with the highest price one being sold by RK Motors for $119,900. That one has the lowest mileage, but also has the usual dealer markup. This means that this example A12 could be a reasonably priced purchase as long as everything checks out. Hopefully, there should also be some back history that comes with the car.

In any case, this is a definite muscle car rarity which will definitely hold its value and increase over time.

Facebook buy/sell groups are becoming very popular as well. Try searching ‘nz vans’ or ‘nz cars’ in your Facebook Marketplace search bar. Many vehicles are also advertised on the main roads.

Driving around to car yards and mechanics is also a good idea and allows you to see the vehicle straight away. Car yards often have warranties to go with the vehicles.

But just like private sellers, there are lemons in the bunch as well!

And lastly, newspapers, community notice boards, and backpacker boards found in hostels can also hold a wealth of potential vehicles.

SCAMS

It’s sad, but nowhere is safe from scammers, even New Zealand. Scammers will often email sellers asking for money transfers or needing help with a long story to go with it. Avoid ANY emails you may receive about buying or selling a vehicle.

Also, it may go without saying, but is worth mentioning nonetheless;

DO NOT BUY A VEHICLE BEFORE YOU ARRIVE!

Always test drive and inspect any vehicle you are interested in!

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR!

Before arriving in New Zealand, I spent some time making a checklist with a mechanic friend of mine to help make the whole process easier. I wanted it to be as stress free as possible when I arrived and starting looking at potential vehicles!

While you could spend a whole day critiquing every little thing on the vehicle you are looking at, we want it to be an efficient task that anybody can do, even without much mechanical knowledge.

So to help, the checklist below should get you started!

Take your time, check every item on the list, and be happy with your inspection. Be prepared to get on the ground to have a good look underneath.

Of course, it's impossible to know everything about the vehicle, but this list should help you avoid the worst vehicles out there!

WHAT TO BRING FOR THE INSPECTION AND VIEWING

► Print out this checklist, PDF version:

► Have a torch or headlamp

► Bring some paper towel for checking the oil

► Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty (for when you lay on ground and look under the vehicle).

► An old towel or small tarp can make laying on the ground easier as well.

You should go through the vehicle checking these things, after which a mechanic inspection (like those offered by AA: HERE) will help put your mind at ease on anything you missed.

A history check (also by AA: HERE) is also worth doing for $20 to make sure you are dealing with the legal owner and no money is owed, among other things.

Both inspection and history checks are highly recommended!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW!

► When arriving for the viewing, try to get the test drive done in the morning on a cold start of the engine. Try to meet the seller at the cars location instead of them driving to you. Cold starts may reveal problems not always apparent once the engine is warmed up. If it has been warmed up, let the engine cool off before starting a test drive.

► Allow 10-15 minutes of driving time on your test drive, making sure to take the vehicle on a hill or steep incline and a highway if possible to test the engine on a hill and at speed.

► After driving, let it sit for another 10-15 minutes and look underneath to check oil leaks (and other leaks) while you do your checklist.

REMEMBER:The vehicle should sound good and drive well. This is the most important thing! If it feels dodgy, it probably is!

MAJOR ITEMS

► Current WOF (warrant of fitness) and check the expiry date. It is advisable to NOT buy a vehicle that does not have a current WOF.

► Current rego and check expiry date.

► Rust!! Check the body and panels first, then around the inside of doors, and finally under the car and around/along the chassis. If you find any major rust in areas- Do not buy!

► Oil leaks under car the car. After test driving, see if any (or how much) drips down after 10-15 minutes.

► An oil leak at the back of the engine is bad news. Do not buy.

► Sludge in oil can mean it hasn’t been maintained. Run finger under where the oil cap is and note any sludge or discolouration (don’t do this on a hot engine!!!). Do not buy.

► The oil should be clean. Black oil in diesel engines can be common even after oil changes, so don’t panic if looking at a diesel engine.

► Blue or white smoke coming out of the exhaust is bad (engine and cylinder firing issues). Give it a good rev and note the smoke colour. Do not buy if smoke is blue or white.

► Take the vehicle up a hill and listen for ticking or plinking noise. This is related to engine strain and/or engine not firing properly.

► Car pulling to the left or right when driving straight (worn axle or bad alignment).

► Brakes! Check if the brakes work with a good, sharp stop.

► Check handbrake works on a hill.

► Tyres! Check that none of the tyres are bald or have very little tread left.

► Check if timing belt or chain belt has been done or is due. A broken timing belt will stop your travels pretty quick and is very expensive to fix! In fact, this is almost guaranteed to stuff your entire trip.

► Leaks out of joints under the vehicle. Any number of problems, investigate further with an AA inspection.

► Any strange sounds or ticks. They can be minor but could also be a major problem in the making.

► Check all lights work including reverse lights. There should not be any cracks in headlights as these are required to pass a WOF.

► Check all fluid levels you can identify. They always have lines indicating minimum and maximum fill levels. You don’t need to know what they are, just that they are at the right level.

Remember, if you have any doubts with the above items, an AA inspection is perfect to identify them.

MINOR ITEMS

► Squeeze all radiator hoses (just squeeze any plastic/rubber hoses visible, when they are OK to touch and not hot). If they are ‘crunchy’, they may need replacing soon and other hoses may be in same state. Leaks and bursts can happen.

► Squeal on startup- belts will need tensioning and in rarer cases, things like mounting shafts/parts could be worn.

► Front and back bounce test. Get the vehicle bouncing, and if it’s still bouncing after you’ve stopped, the shocks may need replacement.

► Seat belts are not worn and work properly.

► General condition of the interior/exterior

Again, if you have any doubts with the above items, an AA inspection is perfect to identify them.

BUYING YOUR VEHICLE

Once you have inspected it yourself, have checked no money is owed, and done the highly recommended AA inspection, it’s time to negotiate the price.

Everyone selling a vehicle will add extra onto the price for negotiating. This is normal and expected.

Be sure to include any faults you found in the vehicle as considerations of the price. If you can see there are any major upcoming repairs, you can definitely ask for a much lower price! Be confident in your dealings and know that practice makes perfect.

Cash is recommended to avoid any drama. Write up a receipt for the transaction as well.

Once finalized, head to the nearest post office with the seller and do a change of registration. This costs $9 and is very easy to do! By going there together with the seller, it’s the safest way to make sure you have actual ownership straight away.

Hygiene on Tatooine

(Inspired by this post by @redrikki.)

Bathing

Most people on Tatooine were unable to afford the quantites of water that would allow for any kind of typical shower, let alone bathing. It was only the richest of the rich who would do that. Some of the wealthier people may have bathed once a month, but even that would have been more than most people could have managed.

Most of the upper lower class, and middle class people on Tatooine would have used Sonic showers. Sonic showers used the barest minimum of water and soap which than vibrated the dirt of your skin. It was the most common means of cleaning one’s body that existed on Tatooine. The soap was made through a combination of natural fats and alkaline salts. A fortunate side note was that it also helped prevent skin disease.

Amongst the slaves, and lower classes, however, even sonic showers were not an option, although, they may have had access to soap, even if it was only homemade. They would take fine sand and mix it with leftover fat and oil which they would smear over their skin and scrape off with scrapers that were specifically designed for that purpose.

(You can just imagine now why Anakin hates sand.)

(You bet it gets everywhere...)

Dental Hygiene

Those who had the means would buy proper toothbrushes and toothpaste from the core. However, those who did not have the means would have sticks with frayed ends that they would use to scrape and clean their teeth. They would make their own toothpaste (or buy toothpaste sold by locals) made of makkana (the Tatooinian version of mint), salt, and dried kaktru petals. It was more of a paste than anything really. Spit was never anything to be wasted though. So this would be done one or twice a week and the paste was rubbed off the teeth with the stick and an old rag.

Since, teeth could not be brushed regularly, however, egafa (a sweetener similar to agave which also had anti-bacterial properties), would be boiled together with amee, Tatooine cinnamon, to make breath mints that you could suck on. They also helped to prevent gum disease. (Doubt they prevented cavities though….)

Deodorant and Perfume

Strong oil based perfumes would have been very popular on Tatooine for those who could afford it. Even if you were one of those people who were able to wash regularly, the heat would get to you and oils a) masked the smell well, and b) were able to wake you up if you feel you’re about to pass out from heat. They were made from the roots, blossoms, and leaves of various plants that were found on Tatooine from which the oils were extracted and mixed together. Creams and salves were made by adding in wax or fat. There was a huge market for these scented products on Tatooine. The best, strongest, and most refined oils/perfumes were, naturally, reserved for the upper middle classes and richer individuals due to expense. Nevertheless, the other people on Tatooine were able to buy the cheaper perfumes made of less expensive and refined oils like that which is found in the peel of common fruits found on cacti, like pallies, which were than mixed with spices like amee. The less refined the oils were and the more common the source ingredients the cheaper the price. Even amongst the lower classes, most, were able to afford the cheapest perfumes.

Those that could not, slaves, and the poverty stricken families would make their own deodorant by rubbing combinations of fruit peel, fragrant flowers, and spices over their bodies and/or creating bags of the fragrant combinations to place under their armpits in an attempt to mask the stench.

It was a significant thing on Tatooine to smell nice. The nicer you could smell, or could afford to smell, the better. Ideally, on Tatooine when you walked past someone, or at least when you hugged someone, you would smell their oils/perfume and it was meant to be an intense, but pleasant fragrance. Most peope who came to Tatooine found that you had two extremes, you smelled really good, or fairly bad. Really good was what Tatooinian society strived for. People were supposed to smell. Best case scenario it was really good.

I would imagine that Anakin, once he came to Coruscant, made an extra special point of smelling nice if he could. He’s definitely the type to wear extra-strong cologne.

Washing

Laundry pretty much existed on the same level as bathing. Few could manage it with water. Most,who could,tried to do it with sonic cleansers. Those that couldn’t did as described below.

The slaves and the lowest classes would scrape what grime the could off their clothes with special scrapers, then they would rub it with an abrasive combination of sand and salt, this they would then scrape off as well. Then, they would place the clothes in a bag filled with commonly found, fragrant flower petals, herbs, and fruit peels and toss it together. They would leave it their for a while to let the clothes absorb the scent. After, to prevent the Tatooinian version of fleas and lice which were very common even among higher classes, let alone the lower ones, they would smear it with fat, (the luckier ones had scented fat) and than left it to dry. The smearing was done every couple of weeks. The washing was done as deemed necessary. Cleanliness was prized on Tatooine so it was done when feasibly possible

Dishes were cleaned using sand as scouring powder. A rag would have been used to remove the remaining sand on the dish. Salt may have been added to the mixture in hopes of cleaning it better.

(I now have this amusing idea that Padme would have helped Shmi to wash the dishes...it’s the least she can do after all. Than she realizes that these dishes...are not really hygienic. She cringes a bit internally and muses that she shouldn’t be surprised. As much as she likes these people, they don’t smell the best either and it’s not their fault at all.

They smell sort of like body odour masked with something citrus. One minute they smell passably ok, the next they smell pungent, the next they smell some combination of the two and it’s just bizarre. She tries not to wrinkle her nose and eventually gets used to it.

It’s the sand scrub, though, that Shmi teaches her the next day to cleanse her body that really makes her gag. How can people live like this?

It gives her a new appreciation for the comforts she’s grown up with.)

Tesla’s New 'Mid-Range' Model 3 Is the iPhone XR of Cars

Whatever you think of Elon Musk, it’s fair to say he doesn’t run a typical car company, and the idiosyncrasies go beyond the electric powertrains and hulking center screens. Tesla’s approach to building and selling automobiles looks rather like that of its Silicon Valley brethren, with a steady stream of over-the-air software updates to go with frequent, sometimes unexpected changes to its products.

The latest of these came last night, when Musk announced (on Twitter, as ever) that Tesla is now offering a “mid-range” Model 3, a new middle ground in battery size and price between the more expensive version of the sedan it has been selling, and the $35,000 model it has long promised.

The tweet sent petrol electronheads to the internet to hunt out information, just as another group of hardcore fans were setting their alarms for 12 am PT, to pre-order Apple’s new iPhone.

The $750 iPhone XR does most of what the $1,000 (and up) XS and XS Max do, minus a few bells and a couple of whistles: no OLED screen, one camera on the back instead of two, and so on. Apple may make less profit per phone, but it opens itself to a broader market, full of people who don’t want to drop four figures. The XR isn’t cheap by any means, but analysts think it could be a sweet spot in pricing, and sell well.

The new Model 3 could find that same spot for Tesla. When Musk launched the car in July 2017, he promised two basic versions. The “long range” car with 310 miles of range, and the one that got everyone excited: a “standard battery” Model 3, with 220 miles of range, for $35,000. So far, Tesla has only built the more expensive version, with compulsory options that take its starting price to $49,000. This new ‘mid-range’ Model 3 will run 260 miles between fill-ups, and start at $45,000. (Let’s note that while Tesla and Apple may have similar product strategies, they’re quite different when it comes to production: Apple is a master of supply chains and rarely misses targets, while Tesla struggles with capacity and rarely hits deadlines.)

So this isn’t Tesla’s long-awaited “affordable” electric (a car Musk has been talking about for more than a decade), but it is the cheapest one yet. And it might help Musk and Tesla deliver on another promise: reaching profitability this year.

“From a product line strategy perspective, it does make sense,” says R. A. Farrokhnia, a business and engineering professor at Columbia University. “For Tesla, a $45,000 car and a $35,000 car are not that different.” For an internal combustion-powered car, you’d have to develop, test, and certify a new engine and drivetrain to make this sort of move. For an EV company like Tesla, a new model variant is a tweak to the battery and some software changes. So if Tesla can make more money from what’s essentially the same car, why not?

The lower price comes with Tesla’s estimate that buyers who place an order now will receive their car in six to 10 weeks. That’s key, because at the end of the year, Tesla buyers will no longer receive the full federal $7,500 tax rebate for buying an EV. (The rules are funky—and might be changed—but essentially, Tesla has sold too many cars to keep qualifying for credits, and is starting a phase-out.)

The mid-range Model 3 may not have the same profit margin as the Performance version of the car (which costs $69,000 with the fancy wheels, brakes, and pedals, making it the equivalent of the iPhone XS Max), but it could attract more buyers, including those who’ve been holding out for the $35,000 vehicle.

Tesla is continually working to reduce the cost of its batteries, which it builds at its Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada, near Reno. The 75-kWh pack that powers the long-range Model 3 costs Tesla about $14,000 dollars (based on the Union of Concerned Scientists estimate of $190 per kWh).

Although Tesla doesn’t specify battery sizes for the Model 3, it’s likely the new car has a roughly 60-kWh pack, which would cost about $11,400. So it costs Tesla $2,600 less to produce than the 75-kWh version. It’s selling the car for $4,000 less than the previous starting point for a Model 3, and therefore potentially losing some profit. But there still plenty of potential margin. Customers are still required to buy the “Premium” interior package, for example, with leather-like seats and a glass roof, which adds $5,000 to the price and likely nets Tesla a nice profit.

Along with the new car, Tesla has quietly made another change to the ordering process. It no longer offers the “full self-driving” option on any of its vehicles. Previously it’s been a check-box choice costing from $3,000 to $5,000, but with the big caveat that it isn’t actually available. Moreover, nobody knows if Tesla’s approach to autonomy, using just cameras, radar, and a lot of computing power, can even work.

The option is still available for believers, as an off-menu choice, via a request through a salesperson. But removing it from the website reduces the chance of confusion—and of a lawsuit from customers who feel short-changed. Autopilot, which keeps the car in its lanes and away from other vehicles on the highway but requires constant human supervision, is still available for $5,000.

Anyone who follows Tesla shouldn’t be surprised by this sort of surprise. Musk Motors doesn’t stick to model year refreshes like conventional car manufacturers. It drops updates like Autopilot, a facelift for the Model S, and new battery sizes whenever it can, or when it thinks it will boost sales. As 2018 winds down, Tesla is on a huge push to prove to investors it can be profitable. An Apple-esque mastery of production capabilities would help it get there, but in the meantime, an Apple-esque product strategy isn’t a bad way to move forward.

What Is A Matcha Latte?

The matcha latte first emerged on coffee shop menus a few years ago, and it has seen a considerable rise in popularity over a relatively short period of time. Its distinctive green colour and uniquely nutty, earthy, and sometimes bitter flavour set it aside from typical coffee shop beverages.

The tea it’s made from – matcha – has been consumed for more than a thousand years. According to some, it also boasts a number of health benefits for those who drink it. But how does it become a latte – a beverage traditionally made with coffee?

Making A Matcha Latte

A matcha latte consists of matcha powder (made from the finely-ground leaves of certain green tea plants), water, and milk. If the matcha powder is unsweetened, the drink is then often sweetened with honey or syrup. The type of milk used will vary according to preference – as will the amount of milk used.

How is it made? First, a few spoonfuls of matcha are blended with water to form a paste. Then, steamed milk is added, as it is with a normal latte, allowing baristas to create latte art on the drink. Effectively, the highly-concentrated matcha “paste” is used instead of espresso, but otherwise, the ingredients are the same.

Rob Good owns Kudos Coffee, a coffee shop in Hampshire, UK. He tells me about how he and his team prepare the drink. “We put a spoonful of matcha in a jug with either water, milk, or a milk alternative and mix it using the steam wand,” Rob says. “We found that with a whisk you still have a few tiny lumps in the drink. By steaming, however, you get a nice, smooth finish. Customers preferred it when we changed to this method.”

Looking to enjoy a matcha latte at home? Well, first, make sure your matcha is suitable for consumption. Quality matcha will have information on its origin or producer. Make sure that it’s fresh (matcha has a six-month lifespan) and kept in a tin to prevent it from being overexposed to heat and air. If the leaves are brown, this indicates that the matcha is “stale”. While it’s not unsafe to drink, the flavour will not be as vibrant as normal.

For a serving for one person, you will need:

15g of filtered water, boiled to around 90°C

5g matcha powder

250g milk (or non-dairy alternative)

Sweetener, such as honey or maple syrup (optional)

A whisk

Mix the matcha, the boiling water, and the optional sweetener in a jug and stir thoroughly. Heat the milk until steaming (make sure to check the temperature if you’re using a non-dairy alternative) and use a whisk to froth the milk. Pour the milk straight into the mug (latte art optional) and enjoy.

Some variations include serving the matcha latte with cold milk, over ice, or topped with sweetened whipped cream to form a “frappuccino”. One famous variation of the drink, the “military latte”, was created by Hiroshi Sawada, the first Asian World Barista Champion at the Latte Art World Championship. The military latte combines matcha powder with espresso, cocoa powder, and vanilla syrup.

Are Matcha Lattes Becoming More Popular?

It’s difficult to find information on how many sales the matcha latte generates for coffee shops. However, a report by Zion Market Research predicts that the global matcha market will be valued at US $4.83 billion by 2024.

The same report indicates that matcha sales are predicted to rise in the USA, Europe, and Asia. Popularity is expected to remain low in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, thanks to a lack of consumer awareness.

Matcha (and matcha lattes as a result) saw a particular rise in global popularity over the last few years. However, it saw another surge in 2020 with the emergence of the whipped or “dalgona” coffee craze. A matcha latte-style version can be made using matcha powder, egg whites (or chickpea water), and a small amount of sugar.

Thanks in part to the health benefits associated with green tea, matcha also seems to be experiencing growth on the back of its reported health benefits. Matcha has followed the same pattern as other drinks which consumers associate with health and wellness, such as kombucha. Rob confirms this, saying that matcha latte sales are “definitely increasing”.

“We are seeing a similar pattern [with matcha] to when we brought in kombucha, which is doing really well right now,” he says.

How Does Matcha Differ From Green Tea?

Both matcha and traditional green tea come from the Camellia sinensis plant, and both are green tea. However, green tea plants which are used for matcha are shade-grown for about a month before processing. This increases the levels of chlorophyll in the leaves, which gives matcha its vivid green colour. Once harvested, the leaves, or tencha, are stripped of their stems and veins and ground into a fine, silky powder.

Matcha is also more concentrated than traditional green tea, and has a much higher caffeine level. A standard cup of matcha made with four teaspoons of powder contains around 280mg of caffeine, while a cup of green tea will contain around 35mg – eight times less. This is why matcha powder is often used in much lower quantities, and why matcha beverages are often served in a lower volume.

As matcha is high in antioxidants, a lot of people believe it prevents heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and can even be used as a dieting aid. This has been a big part of its recent global growth. Rob says: “The health benefits associated with matcha are by the far the biggest reason we are seeing people order this drink.”

However, official information about matcha’s health benefits, given its relatively recent rise in global popularity, is difficult to find. Make sure to check the label or ask a barista when you buy any matcha drink. Some popular coffee shop chains sell matcha-based beverages that are quite high in sugar, and may not be as healthy as you think.

The Different Grades Of Matcha

Not all matcha is created equal, and there are three typical “grades” of matcha that people refer to. Today, most matcha sold is “ceremonial-grade” – this is the grade of matcha used for most beverages.

Ceremonial matcha is meant to be consumed as is, without additives. It is almost always ground by stone. It is the most expensive grade of matcha (US $100 to $140 per 100g). This is because the process of grinding leaves with a stone can be time-consuming and labour-intensive.

Premium matcha is “food-grade” matcha that isn’t as intense, bitter, or sweet as ceremonial matcha. It is slightly cheaper than ceremonial-grade matcha (US $50 to 80 per 100g) and contains younger matcha leaves for a fresher flavour.

Finally, culinary matcha has a very intense and bitter flavour, and is usually used for baking or cooking. It is the cheapest of the three grades (US $15 to 40 per 100g). While they do vary in price, no one grade of matcha is “better” than the other – they all simply have different uses.

To Western palates, matcha can taste unusual. As it contains high levels of chlorophyll and amino acids, it has a very savoury flavour (also known as “umami”). However, adding milk or sugar can make matcha much sweeter. Furthermore, the drink’s quality and taste will depend on the grade of matcha used, and how it is prepared.

Zach Mangan is the co-founder of Japanese green tea company Kettl. He explains that matcha can be an acquired taste, and says it is one that should not be forced. “Your palate will develop,” he explains. “But it shouldn’t be miserable to drink.”

So, what does the future hold for the matcha latte, and matcha as a whole? “I’m not sure how popular the matcha latte will be against other drinks,” Rob tells me. “But with people becoming more aware of the importance of their diet and looking after their bodies, I see this taking off and being on the menu for some time.”

There is a growing consumer focus on health and wellness that extends to the food we eat and the beverages we drink. Today, we’ll get straight to the point and speak frankly and honestly. Frank, Founder and Managing Director of MONOCHROME, whom I’ve known for more than seven years now, is probably one of the most upfront and straightforward people I’ve ever met: Frank is a man who says what he thinks. And today we’ll talk about one of his most beloved watches, one that he’s owned for years and that I’ve always wanted to feature in our ‘Collector’s Series’, his handsome Audemars Piguet Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ 5402ST. And because this watch is such an icon, it doesn’t really need an introduction anymore. Instead, we’ll be looking at what really matters, the collecting side of things, the market, the fuzz around the watch…

Today the ‘Collector’s Series’ goes wild and I’m happy to have Frank on board for this new instalment. Fasten your seatbelts and let’s get to it!

Brice Goulard – No need to present this model anymore… It is a true icon. So let’s talk about your own watch, Frank. I know you’ve had it for a while now. What’s the story behind it?

Frank Geelen – We have to go back to my early days of collecting and running MONOCHROME. Online at forums, I had seen the occasional Royal Oak and I liked it, however, it was simply far out of reach, budget-wise. But I also had no idea of what it would be on the wrist and most retailers of high-end watches were simply not very welcoming. It felt like there was a balloting committee to decide whether they would allow you to come in, to try on the watch, or even to be worth a second look from the salesperson. Most images of the Royal Oak were the official PR shots and that didn’t really show the watch in its natural habitat, i.e. the wrist. Fast forward a few years…

A friend of mine, Robert-Jan from Fratello, owned a ref. 15300 and although I kind of liked the watch (from a distance), there was always something that just didn’t do it for me. I handled the watch on several occasions, tried it briefly on my wrist. Of course, I had read a lot about the Royal Oak, or at least quite a bit, as information was not as ‘available’ as it is today on the world wide web! So I knew about the model’s history, how it was designed (on a napkin during Baselworld, they say) and I had seen quite a few photos of Royal Oaks. I guess like many, I wondered why it was so incredibly expensive. And how it would look on my wrist. Somehow I could not really connect to the 15300. When RJ sold the 15300, he bought a 15202ST and in 2011 I got to borrow his watch for a few days.

This was a pre-2012 reference 15202ST and I have to admit, the spark was still not there. It was too angular, too ‘rough’, and although I ‘kind of’ liked it, it certainly was no head over heels or anything close to the motivation that is required to drop 15k on the table (or around 12k for a pre-owned one, at that time).

The following year, in January 2012, Audemars Piguet introduced a revamped version of the ref. 15202ST during the SIHH in Geneva. I tried it on my wrist for a photoshoot and I fell for it. Head over heels! And immediately I understood what made me like the new version so much more than the previous version. The markers were thinner and longer, the clous de Paris (hobnail) dial featured a much finer pattern, called petit tapisserie. This softened up the watch’s design and I loved it.

I wanted one, but I know the price was much more than what I could afford. So upon my return, immediately after the 2012 SIHH, I started searching for an old 5402ST, as that one also featured the long and thin hour markers and a petit tapisserie that was even finer than on the latest 15202ST. I soon found one that A) matched my budget, B) looked good and C) the dealers seemed trustworthy. So that was it, I spent more than I had ever spent on a watch before, and a few days later I received my Royal Oak. It was a D series, it was in very good condition, with the correct bracelet and clasp, original crown and well, it all looked very good. I was over the moon with my new watch!

What do you love so much about the Royal Oak, especially this vintage 5402ST version?

The design is so balanced, so perfect, and displays an admirable middle ground between masculine lines and shapes, and some softer shapes. The case and bracelet are, of course, quite masculine and also quite shiny. Although my old 5402ST is not that shiny anymore and the sharp edges have softened up over the years.

But still, the case and bracelet of the Royal Oak are very masculine, sharp, almost edgy. But the petit tapisserie of the 5402, which is even more “petit” than the tapisserie on the current 15202, looks very good and somehow softens the looks of the watch. A different dial, and there have been quite a few over the course of several decades, is very determinative for the Royal Oak’s looks, in my humble opinion. The sleek and long applied hour markers match the design perfectly. It’s harmonious, balanced, masculine yet not too “hard” or angular.

And at least as important, I love the thinness of this watch! The bracelet is thinner than later versions, the case too. Because of this thinness, it just feels so good on the wrist.

How does that compare to the modern equivalent, the 15202ST?

When my son was born I wore the 5402 not as much as before. Those little hands try to grab anything and the old 5402 is thin and all of a sudden it started to feel fragile on my wrist. So I started saving pennies for a new 15202ST as it was introduced in 2012. The dial is different, the case and bracelet are thicker, the clasp is easier to open and close, but they managed to grasp the essence of the old 5402ST in the new 15202ST.

Although I was highly surprised when, in 2012, I found out that the dial was blue because, so I was told by Octavio Garcia, the designer, the original also had a blue dial. Now maybe I’m colour-blind, but I can’t see blue in the dial of my 5402ST. The blue looks good, no it looks great, so no worries, I am enjoying the various tones of blue a lot. The best thing is that the 15202ST does not feel fragile, so I’m wearing it a lot and I’m not scared that my son will grab it and accidentally break something.

It feels like a modern version of the 5402, although in terms of modernity, I could have imagined a few ‘modern’ features. A fine-adjustment in the clasp to make the bracelet a bit longer or shorter, for instance, would have been appreciated hugely! Or a quick release system like on Vacheron’s Overseas is something I also really like, as I would love to be able to wear my 15202ST on a rubber band too. Anyways, I’m still very pleased with the watch and I wear, and enjoy, it a lot.

A-Series, B-Series, C-Series, D-Series… At the risk of shocking some collectors, is it necessary to only focus on the earliest models? Aren’t the later 5402ST, such as yours, as rewarding?

You know my opinion on this. I think it’s BS. Hence the reason why we hardly cover the next record-setting rare Rolex. If you like a watch, you like a watch. I cannot relate to this sort of collecting; some watches are more sought-after because it has a misprint dial or a very rare “underline” or a “dot over 90” bezel or… Most of these now-sought-after watches were far from collectable a few decades ago, but the collecting world somehow found ways to distinguish one old Rolex Submariner from another, while both have the same reference and look identical to most collectors. All of a sudden a broken dial is called a spiderweb dial, a faded dial is ‘tropical’ and a dial with spots is called a leopard dial. To me, this is so much nonsense. But people found a way to have a watch that they believe is more special than another one. And others found a way to ‘age’ a watch in such a way that it becomes more collectable and they can make a pleasant profit. It’s a murky world and I prefer to stay away from it.

That’s also why I keep being surprised to see 5402 C-series popping up with so-called “AP at 6” dials. These dials featured the AP logo on the lower end of the dial like it is on the new post-2012 ref. 15202ST. The inspiration for this post-2012 dial comes from the dials on 5402 A-series. From what I learned about these dials, these were also used on some B series, so seeing these dials on C series and even D series…. Makes you wonder! But since collectors prefer to focus on collectability or investments, they are missing out on the beauty of such a remarkably nice watch and of the joy of wearing it. Personally, I don’t care whether it’s an A, B, C or D series. It’s the looks of the 5402 that I fell in love with.

We can’t skip the topic of market value when it comes to the Royal Oak. What’s your take on the current situation and the speculative bubble?

When I bought my 5402 the prices started around 10k and a new pre-owned model was more expensive than the old 5402. I just checked Chrono24 and the cheapest 5402ST is priced at 38,500 EUR, there’s one at 39,500 and the next is 44,800 EUR. Prices have quadrupled over the past eight years. Although prices are quite steep, I can understand this price development.

I have more problems with the price of the new 15202ST on the pre-owned or grey market, as prices are at least 10,000 EUR higher than the retail price. Patek’s Nautilus is even more insane and the prices are double of the retail price. Similar problems with various Rolex sports models (Daytona, Sub, GMT Master Pepsi and Batman) and to me this ruins the fun of collecting. With such prices, we enter a different game, the speculation game and to me, that’s a negative sentiment.

What would you recommend to aspiring collectors who are thinking of buying a vintage Royal Oak? And are there any alternatives?

First of all, make sure you get enough wrist time with the watch you want to buy. This is key. When your wrist is smaller than 16 centimetres, you might not like how it sits on the wrist. Study the market, be patient, know the seller; the latter is very important! If you like the old Royal Oak Jumbo, something that I can understand very well, then I’m sure it won’t disappoint.

Alternatives are around, for people with a smaller wrist there are the 36mm diameter options from AP and there are also some older versions with the petit tapisserie dial and sleek, long hour markers. But since we’re talking vintage, there simply are not many alternatives, unless you are prepared to go for a newer watch. In that case, I’d suggest the 15202ST and good alternatives from other brands (for luxury sports watches) are the VC Overseas and the Bvlgari Octo Finissimo, especially now the water resistance has been increased to 100m.

Last but not least… Is it for sale?

No. Well, if someone offers 10 times the price I paid (7.5k), then I’m prepared to let it go. Since that won’t happen anytime soon, I will be enjoying my lovely 5402ST.

Introduction

Inphic SPOT i5 is one of the newest models from the Chinese manufacturer Inphic.

My thanks goes to the Inphic team and especially Javier, for providing this review sample!

It uses the cheaper and less powerful little brother of the AMLogic chipset family – the S805.

That means that if you’re looking for 4K playback, you better look elsewhere, as this device tops out at 1080p.

It also means that the price point is quite low. Inphic did a promotion a short while ago, where it sold the first 100 units that came out for half price – that’s 13 USD, excluding shipping.

Therefore, the regular price stands at around 26 USD. But for now, the price is still low at about 15.6 USD per unit, or about 26.82 USD with shipping.

What do we get in the box?

The Inphic SPOT i5, DC Power adapter, Micro-USB to female USB adapter (the device only offers one micro-USB slot), a Infra-red remote control, a small user manual, and a (white) HDMI cable.

Modest, but as can be expected from a device that’s been designed to offer a good price.

The device arrived with an initial version of firmware, but after a few days, I was sent an updated OTA application that allowed me to update to the latest firmware which includes rooting (and I added SuperSu to allow permissions management) and corrected at least one of the issues: 3d Mark managed to run after installation, after not being able to before. PC Mark 8 installed and run (only from downloaded APK) but would only perform the tests in portrait mode and still could not complete them.

All issues found have been reported to manufacturer and hopefully will be addressed in time.

Looks and design

The i5 is an interesting animal in the TV boxes world. For one, it’s not even shaped as a box. Instead, it’s designed as a top hemisphere, a beetle, or half of a ball. It is offered in one of four colors (Red, Blue, Black or White), and stands out in the sea of rectangular TV boxes out there. It’s made of soft plastic/rubber, and may turn sticky over time in a warm/hot environment, so be aware.

For another, it’s main purpose is to keep costs down, while still offering a reasonable performance. How does it do it, and does it succeed? You’ll have to keep reading to find out.

Benchmarks and Testing

All benchmarks have been repeated 3 times and results have been averaged to give a more accurate reading:

Antutu Benchmark

The Antutu benchmark tests single core performance over multi-core as it is a better indication of the performance of one device over others in most situations. As can be seen, this budget box performs a little better than the HiSilicon 3798M based box, and a part of its poor performance can be attributed to the low amount of working RAM (1GB) that it carries.

GPU Mark Benchmark

Average and Normalized score

GPU Mark Average Frames per Second

GPU Mark tests 3d gaming performance and also provides a normalized score according to the used screen resolution (for a more accurate result). The test is quite short and should be taken as a supporting result to that of the more serious 3D Mark benchmark. The average FPS score is a bit surprising as it’s not as bad as can be expected, and can be due to the fact that the GPU is similar (although at a lower clock speed) then that of the faster options tested.

A1 SD Benchmark

A1 SD Benchmark tests RAM and flash memory speeds. As can be seen in the provided graphs, RAM is much faster (by a factor of about 40) than flash memory – that is why it’s in smaller amount and is also volatile (does not keep its contents after a reboot). The included RAM in this box is fairly slow, and it affects the performance just as much as the low amount of it. This is likely due to the need to cut costs on this model.

PC Mark Benchmark

Benchmark would not run

3D Mark Benchmark

3D Mark is a labor intensive 3D animation and gaming Benchmark. It runs a series of 3d heavy game and video animations. In the case of the i5, it pointed quite clearly at the box’s inability to handle heavy tasks. Do not try to use it as a gaming android machine – it is simply not up to the task.

As the testing, and as I previously already knew from information on the internet, the AMLogic S805 is not capable of 4K (sometimes referred to as 2160p or UltraHD) video playback. I only tested it on Kodi, but unlike other boxes, it does not include a 4K external player application and that is further evidence to the fact.

I should mention: Asphalt 8 was playable, but it crashed out to the desktop several times mid-game, and loading was VERY slow. Angry Birds mostly worked well, with slow loading times. WWR worked quite well, but I think it is better coded and less heavy than the other two. In short, don’t get this device to play games, unless you enjoy waiting.

Conclusions

The i5 is a different kind of kodi machine, both for its unusual shape and its target audience. It gives an average performance but also comes at one of the cheapest prices out there. It is not a gaming device.

The manufacturer Inphic does seem to listen and work on the correction of the issues I found. Remember that aside from the low specs, it is a brand new model that did not yet have time to go through too many firmware upgrade cycles. I’m sure that the device will get better with time.

Did I like it? Not especially, but I recognize that for its price point, it may be a good option for some.

Would I recommend it? Yes, but only for price conscious buyers and those who want a only-kodi device that tops out at 1080p video.

I give it… 2.75/5 Stars – Passing marks, with hopes that future updates will correct some if not all the issues found.

What is a Loss Leader?

A loss leader is a pricing strategy where a product is sold at a price below its market cost in order to stimulate other sales of more profitable goods or services. Specifically, in retail businesses such as grocery stores the price of a loss leader is lower than the actual cost the retailer paid for the item.

Loss Leader Pricing

Toilet paper, milk and eggs are typical examples of loss leaders in supermarkets. They are sold at discounted prices so as to draw customers to the store, where they will also buy plenty of regular priced items. Once you decide to turn a product into a loss leader you will need enough of it to continue to make sales. You cannot afford to have a product you are leveraging to draw in customers to run out.

Stockpiling

If the loss-leader price is too good to ignore, customers might buy it in bulk and then stockpile it for later use. You can avoid this issue by limiting purchase quantities or only offering products with a limited shelf life thus preventing stockpiling.

If you continue with the high discount you risk giving the impression the product should have a lower price at all times. Impacting sales of the item when it returns to its normal price.

Furthermore, those who purchase only loss leaders will often believe other items in the store are marked up ridiculously high.

Impact on small businesses

Large corporations with their deep pockets benefit the most from loss leaders. They can also leverage their purchase volume in their negotiations with the suppliers and can get the cheapest offers. Since their costs are lower, their loss from loss-leading pricing is smaller when you compare it to small businesses. They can afford to take a hit on some products to enjoy gains on other items. Small businesses can’t afford to cut prices so steeply as such and loose out.

The loss leader strategy may seem simple but is tricky. There are no guarantees a business will make more money by losing money on certain items.

To mitigate this, you might want to put in place a rewards program. By encouraging frequent customers to earn discounts the product behind the discount will retain its value. This brings in the impression the low price is a special offer they have earned themselves. Airlines use frequent flier rewards to encourage loyalty. In the same token credit card companies provide perks for using their cards while purchasing.

Make sure you assign the right product to the title of a loss leader. When an obscure, unpopular product has its price drastically cut, it may not catch anyone’s attention. If your loss lead is a common product customers buy regularly, you have a higher chance of them purchasing it.

Pricing is important for the success of Loss Leader. The price can’t be so low your business is not able to recover the losses. So you make sure to decide on the price carefully; in such a way the loss has to lead to buying more products. It is important you make up for your loss on other sales

Though loss leader pricing is a good strategy towards building traffic to a store you would need to ensure you are actually generating an incremental profit, rather than a substantial loss. The careful combination of discounts and reward systems will help mitigate negative perceptions of your products by customers.
