The letter carrier shifts uncomfortably. “Well, you kept writing, and I… I couldn’t exactly get you to stop, then, could I? So… I brought them to her.”
“How did she die?” You never cried when your arrows pierced another man’s head, nor when you had to carry a brother’s corpse across the battlefield. Now, as you speak, you can barely hold back the sob rising in your throat.
He shrugs helplessly. “I don’t know. Office just told me to stop delivering there. I um- I do have other deliveries to make-”
You wave him off and he scurries away, clearly happy to have left the interaction. When he’s out of sight, you collapse to you knees, staring at the pile of letters in front of her tombstone. Then you notice something.
All the letters are opened.
The seal of the royal army is no mere wax; you had whispered her name to it every month, when your commander sent his agent around to pick up the mail, to ensure only she could break it. The army did not want any chance of interception by the enemy, and its mages were the best in the land.
If someone had dared to puppet your child for their schemes…
Your rage cools as the scent of morningbloom floods your nose, despite the lack of even a breath of wind. Perhaps no necromancer was needed, then. Her favorite flower dots the soil before you, the same color as her eyes.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry I left you. I’m sorry I came home too late. I’m sorry you died alone. I’m so sorry, little flower.”
A weight settles on your shoulders, light and cool.
“I never knew we would be gone so long. I thought I’d come back to you in no time, with stories to tell and triumphs to celebrate. But there is nothing I can give you now, save an old fool’s tears.”
You can’t speak for a few moments, the grief overwhelming your thoughts.
“I do not know what compels you to stay, but please, my dear, go into the bright meadow. There is nothing left for you here. I will see you soon, my love.”
Her presence, eventually, leaves, and you are left alone staring at her headstone.
REMEMBER ALWAYS THAT YOU ARE LOVED
MAY FLOWERS GROW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS
You’ve just got back from the war after several years. Each day you wrote to your daughter. You came back to find your letters piled on her grave.
