Hola, hablas espanol? Un poco. Haha most of my Spanish is based off of context clues from similar words and phrases that we have in Filipino, and the very basic lessons I’ve gotten from Duolingo if that even counts, so I most likely would not survive a conversation. Overall though, I can read Spanish much more quickly and better than I can listen to/speak it. Music is playing right now, isn't it? What song? No but for some reason I have the OST of one of the Mario Kart 8 tracks playing in my head. Do you use AIM? What's your screen name? No, I didn’t really catch that era anymore. How many cell phones have you gone through in your life? I had two of the classic Nokia phones, a flip phone, a hand-me-down from my dad, two iPhone 5S, and my current iPhone 8 so that makes it a total of seven. Do you have a little sister? What's her name? Yeah. We’ve always called her Nina at home but for some reason she chose to go with her full first name in school and everywhere else, so it’s always a source of confusion when her friends and I are in the same room and we call her different names hahaha.

Who was the last person you screamed at? Why were you screaming? I think my mom? I was filming my dad doing one of the Tiktok dances (yep, my parents are into Tiktok lmaooooo) but my mom blocked the camera at some point so I jokingly yelled at her to go away. Can you crack your joints? Which ones? Just my fingers, which is all I ever feel like cracking anyway. What's your favorite name for a guy? And a girl? I repeat my fave girls’ names too much on this damn site, y’all know at least one of them by now. I don’t really think of boys’ names but I suppose my current favorite is Miguel. Are you good at answering trick questions? I don’t really encounter them a lot so I wouldn’t know. Do you use Myspace or Facebook? Or both? I don’t use Myspace/was never addicted to it the way I am to like Twitter now. I do use Facebook for various reasons – to stay connected to family, to be updated with announcements from school, to communicate for work, and to share memes hahahaha. Do you need spellcheck in order to spell things correctly? Not really. Sometimes I’ll Google a word before typing it out to be 100% sure but it’s only usually for words that are commonly misspelled, like ‘occasionally.’ Do you do too many surveys? How many have you done today? I don’t know if taking them daily counts as taking them too much but to be fair I only take one to three surveys a day. I definitely take much fewer surveys than I did, like, seven years ago when I would fill out ten a day. Have you ever changed yourself to impress someone? Who? I remember trying to like bands like The Summer Set, You Me At Six, The Maine, We Came As Romans, This Century, etc in Grade 6 because all the cooler, hipster kids liked them. UGH thinking about how I acted during that period is so cringe because I never even liked any of the fucking music but I tried so hard to, lmao. There were only three bands I ended up genuinely enjoying: All Time Low, Sleeping With Sirens, and We Are the In Crowd. After that I stopped paying attention to what people liked. She has changed a lot and it’s obvious we are not as close as before and when we do talk it’s mostly awkward small talk. I don’t know what happened along the way, but I just hope she’s happy. I usually have stuff printed in school because with my dad not being home most of the time, my mom and brother never printing anything, and my sister living in a dorm, it doesn’t seem worth it to keep buying ink just for me. The last thing I printed was a news article I needed to turn in for business writing class. What's your favorite number? Is there any reason that's your favorite? 4. I honestly liked it initially because it’s Beyoncé’s favorite number so I just stuck with that answer for the longest time haha. What kind of shampoo do you use? Does it smell amazing? It’s one of the Dove shampoos. It’s nothing life-changing but seeing as it’s a hair care product, it of course smells nice and decent.   Do you go to concerts? What was the last one you attended? Not a lot. I save my attendance for my absolute favorites which means that so far I’ve been to two Paramore shows and one One Direction show. The bts world game seems like it'll just dehumanize bts, and further encourage obsessive fans. I feel kinda uncomfortable by it, and it's hard to imagine bts themselves being totally okay with it too

I low-key agree. I was already kind of feeling weird about the self-insert Y/N kind of thing as I’m just not a fan of that stuff, but I was hoping it was going to be like a legit sort of “History of BTS” kind of thing where you’re not really PART OF IT, but you’re there observing and on occasion have like tasks to do. From what I’ve seen, however, it seems like it’s a warped version of events that allow the player to basically be the be-all end-all of the guys’ careers while certain events are based in reality and others are completely pulled out of nowhere.

And, lol, I’m always going to have a problem where sexual harassment and weirdness like that is made out to be “winning” in a game, sooooo… you know. But I saw that some of the stuff (SOME) that was way over the top and cringe was being fixed or changed in the game. But I saw people complaining about a trigger warning for Jimin and I have no idea what that’s about but it had me like >.> because what the fuck are they doing with Jimin in that game that needs a trigger warning. If it’s what I think it is then literally I will riot in the fucking streets because WHY the FUCK would that be put into a ~fun and fresh~ game where you’re already setting out to objectify these people and warp THEIR REALITY to fit into a fucking game for the enjoyment of people who don’t actually fucking know them… and honestly, I don’t think Jimin would want anything that would require a fucking trigger warning to be put into a game around his “””character””” 

But yeah, just from what I’ve seen, what I’ve heard, and what I just expected from this kind of nonsense, I honestly don’t know how the guys would actually feel about this. Like… it’s literally THEIR LIFE being warped for entertainment so that people who already seem to think they OWN THEM can play puppet master and feel like they have even more control over them while trivializing and scrubbing down their actual work while also throwing in the traditional problematic bullshit that goes along with an Y/N self-insert shit that’s supposed to fan service but comes off as harmful and gross. 

Color me concerned, lol. If I were to just assert my own perspective, I’d say they aggreed to making a game about their lives where the fans were their managers and it was fun and lighthearted, but were not aware of the specifics of the storylines or what was really going into it. I don’t for a second think that they even had any say over how their characters were going to speak or what would be presented as, from what I’ve seen, it looks like they just pulled a bunch of stuff from bombs, twitter, and other sources and used it to rebuild the basic structure of that time period for them. Like, it almost doesn’t even feel personal, but it’s played up to be like you’re seeing into something really private, which, yeah, will dehumanize them as some people will think that what they SEE of BTS is all there is and that there is no real human being underneath what is displayed for the public. 

It’s weird, lol.

Yes, I got about 75 million messages about it after the stream across all of my socials, lol. I thought it was really interesting and I wanted to post about it right away because what he was saying went along with what I had been seeing of the Soul Body and how the integration process is happening for them collectively.

Unfortunately, I don’t fully remember what it all way that I had gotten when I started channeling on it, but I do remember that his premonitions are not him seeing potentials, but SEEDING potentials. Basically, as potentials and guidance are seeded through Namjoon and move through the body, move through the other energy centers, it becomes formed and anchored into reality. Jin projects the initial wave, Taehyung anchors the “material” of it, and then Kook is that last line between the body and the physical reality.

I was being shown this as being like a printer. Like, Jin is the data moving through the air, that signal or whatever between the computer (their source and Namjoon) and the actual printer (Kook). Taehyung is that point where the printer itself is like preparing by grabbing the paper and readying the ink, and then Kook is the actual process of printing. He’s not predicting the future, he’s catching the image that is about to be printed, he’s seeing the potential, which allows it to be seeded, anchored in, and then experienced in the physical reality.

The fact that he even said that it’s getting CLEARER is really interesting because that’s exactly what would happen as they raise their vibration on a soul level and that deeper perception starts to come to the surface of the conscious mind. It’s really, really interesting to me. He has that inner sense that there is “fate” as well, as in he’s understanding something that he can’t quite put into words, but can conceptualize around things being planned out and being met in some way, and it being significant, something he should pay attention to. VERY FUCKING COOLLLLLL.

In terms of him being “psychic” - yeah, everyone is “psychic” in some way, it just depends on what “tool” you have, how you use it, how receptive to it you are on a conscious level, and what it is meant to be used for. Kook is having premonitions in order to anchor events into reality. It’s his tool for his specific purpose in the body.

How to print your comic, Part III: What could go wrong?!

Today is the last day of the “Printing your comic” series, and after learning the proper vocabulary and better understanding how the printing process works, were gonna tackle the most common problems that will happen anyway. Yes, even if you communicate properly, even if you export the file correctly and if you’ve chosen the appropriate paper grammage. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again: printing is not exactly predictable and you’re probably going to have to deal with some unexpected adjustments to make. Let’s talk about the most common things we want to avoid or fix. 

“My colors look dull and dreary on paper”

This is for anything related to color in printing: if you’re like most digital artists, you probably create your comic in RGB mode on your chosen drawing software. This is the standard setting and the most appropriate to work with on your computer screen, since it uses the light-color language.

This apparent desaturation of your painting happens because in fact light is brighter than pigment, very simply, and when we convert the art to CMYK, some of the vibrance might be lost. This happens especially when portraying conditions such as high contrast, bright lights and some particularly tricky colors such as blues and greens. In this case, color might simply break in generate ugly color bands instead of the smooth gradient transitions you’ve envisioned and executed on digital media. 

A simple way you can fix this is to work normally on your RGB file, and after finishing it, save it in CMYK color mode to check it out. Things you’ll get to fix at this point are:

Color balance overall, using tools such as color curves (they will now appear as CMKY),

Avoid color bands, which happen because some colors don’t exist in CMKY the same way they exist in RGB

Anything to glowy or scenes that have lots of contrast might need to be toned down in order not to break your colors. Again, white in light is really, really bright, so it naturally looks very different on your computer screen, which is a light source.

“My colors looks too glaring and oversaturated”

This is not a very common problem, but it’s the other side of the coin from the topic above. Some colors might pop out more than you’ve expected and overtake the painting. For me, I’ve had the experience of getting a really loaded yellow, so everything close to this color would look lighter and brighter - as a consequence, some other colors would look dull and gray, since the proportion of colors was a little off balance now. Most cases, however, you’ve probably picked a very shiny paper, like a glossy photographic one. Changing to a matte finishing generally fixes this issue. So, for this cases:

Check the color balance as indicated above,

Choose a paper finishing that favours your colors.

“My blacks look gray.”

For this one we need again to remember the difference of color perception from screen to paper. If you are now looking at your CMKY final file on screen and have the impression that the blacks are gray, that’s totally normal. For your screen, “black” means no light at all in those pixels, but the “K” that is printing black ink has a different data to inform that. That’s why most softwares will give you two options: PDF-digital and PDF-printing for exporting your art. 

Now, if your printed file comes out with blacks looking too gray, let’s talk about what probably happened. This typically will show in your speech lines, if you’re making comics, and the confusion happens when we switch color modes from one software to the other. Say you’re on your painting software (Photoshop, SAI, Corel Painter, etc), painting in RGB color mode. You export the file and don’t pay a lot of attention, and the page art is still in RGB, but you open in on a vector based (InDesign, Illustrator, CorelDRAW, etc) the add speech bubbles and character speeches, but these softwares generally work in CMKY. So the problem generally comes from picking two images that were generated in different color modes and merging them. When you export this mix in whichever final format, something is bound to break down.

If you’re working with more than one software, be sure they’re on the same color mode when you merge those images.

“My pages came in the wrong position/upside down in some of the units.”

That’s always a funny thing, and way more recurring than you’d expect. Unless you noticed this happens to all of your units (which would mean the file has the pages switched), that’s absolutely not your fault, but a very common mistake from the printing shop. Take a moment to think about just how many units you are printing, and how many pages you have in each one of them. Most the process of saddle stitching is automated, so the staff won’t actually check every page of every unit. This is your job, actually. Once you notice one or more of your units have this problem, just make a video of it indicating the issue, send it to your printer and explain the situation. Like I said, this is more recurring than you’d think, so they’ll probably very quickly print you new copies with very little questioning.

Always check your comics at the time of arrival. You can ask for corrected copies later on if one you your buyers notices it after the purchase, of course, but whenever you can, check before to have a chance of substituting them in advance.

Be communicative and register everything in video.

“My text font came out wrong.”

This can happen if you’ve sent the native file to the printer, like a .AI, .ID or .CDR. (Illustrator, Indesign and CorelDraw, respectively) and did not link or pack your font with it.You’re using a font that you’ve downloaded, it didn’t come embedded in your computer or software. When the printer staff opens your file to send it to the printing machine, their computer will not be able to read this font, and will therefore substitute it for a font they have available. Since this is an automated process, it won’t even be a similar one, and you might end up with Arial Black all over your comic.

Send your files in PDF, really, it is just the best format for this purpose (JPEG and PNG will also prevent this from happening, though).

If you need to send a native file, always remember “packing” your fonts. (That’s a very specific situation, so I won’t explain how to do it here, but if you need this, please feel free to contact me, ok?)

For all of those problems above, you can actually ask for a print test when you’re running a certain amount of units. For most print shops, they’ll either have a free or very low fee option of sending you a test copy to anything over 100 units. You get this copy before your actual print is run, so you get to check all of these things and talk to your staff ahead of time. It’s a great idea, always ask if this option is available and use it!

Here is a quick list of things to check before you send your file:

Be sure the number of pages in your file is a multiple of 4

Remember your cover counts as 4 pages (front, back, and the verse of each one)

300 to 450 DPI resolution

If needed, “pack” your fonts

Make the proper math to choose between offset and digital printing in advance

Always leave a bleed

Be aware of your safezone

Send your files in CMKY

Check paper size

Have sample prints whenever is possible

Always have a time buffer so that you can fix problems before a convention or event

Always, always, always be patient and communicate a lot!

My thoughts regarding Cates’ GotG #1

What I liked

I like the fact that Groot is still speaking, that Cates didn’t ignore what Duggan did to himi. This will sound as blasphemy but I would be OK if “I am Groot” never comes back in the comics. Not because it’s considered to be gimmicky, but because writers tend to use it as a writing crutch.

Having Groot say “I am Groot” and having other characters react with shock over what he said while leaving the reader (or viewer in case of the movies) wondering what he said it’s also pretty overdone. Let him talk.

I also like that he has his old personality back. He’s less pompous and regal and lacks his flowery speech (which I liked) and he comesoff as an angry teenager (but that has to do more with Cates’ form of writing) but he’s pretty similar to the Groot of old. Which I like because I find that Groot more interesting.

Peter is less of a clown, and more sharp, witty, and sarcastic.He’s more proactive and gives the impression that he really did care what happened with the missing Knowhere. I though him referring to the Novas “pigs” was weird since he was also technically a space cop at one point. Then again this new Nova Corps is infuriating and I loved that he started asking that Nova guy what the hell they were going to do about what was happening with the whole Knowhere is missing situation.

The whole cassette player being broken was Cates’ not so subtle way of saying “I don’t want to do MCU Guardians” which is good in my book.

I know I said I don’t like MCU synergy but Peter having a new ship named after Winona Ryder was pretty cool. The Nova guy asking if it was named after Rich was funny too.

I like how the Guardians formed, it’s spontaneous, maybe overdone in superhero stories but I liked it.

We get a new GotG team that’s not the MCU roster, finally.

Rocket is not in this comic for unspecific reasons but also because he’s going to be in Avengers: No Road Home. Not that I hate Rocket but Ewing is writing that Avengers comic and I liked his Rocket mini so I’m looking forward to him writing Rocket.

Wraith got sucked into that vortex thing.

Wendell is back as Quasar!

What I didn’t like

The implication that Cosmo, Darkhawk, Smasher, Wendell Vaughn, the Starjammers, etc... are presumed dead. Only because Wraith and Kallark who got sucked in and they appear in a future cover I am willing to bet they aren’t dead. I don’t worry about Adam or Vance because one can die and the other can find ways to come back. I hope they aren’t dead because killing all of those cosmic characters just like that is a good way to piss off cosmic fans.

It’s weird when you have big name characters in the background (at least big name for cosmic) and they don’t do anything. I have a hard time believing Wendell and Adam wouldn’t have said something in that scene with Eros talking about Thanos.

It’s a Thanos centered story and you only see Adam Warlock in the background? And suddenly Cosmic Ghost Rider is an authority on Thanos? Pffftt. Maybe Cates can’t write Adam.

What is the point of Cosmic Ghost Rider? Other than the rescue scene where CGR has his chain wrapped around Stormbreaker he was totally irrelevant and his scenes in the story stuck out like a sore thumb and did nothing to contribute to the overall plot other than remind us that he’s there. Seriously, outside the rescue scene, take the panels with him out and you wouldn’t really miss much. Heck the story would flow better without his constant inane interruptions.

Also CGR’s spot on the team could have gone to a better character.

Bill and Silver Surfer are worried about fighting the Black order meanwhile Rich is soloing them in the next issue of their comic. The Black Order shouldn’t be a match for those cosmic powerhouses.

I don’t expect Cates to know but it’s still a big sign writers and editors don’t care much about small time characters. Gladiator was in Darkhawk’s vicinity and not once did he tried to kill him. Chris killed Lilandra (though unwillingly) and Kallark loved her and mourned her death. It’s really not important to the story but if you know the characters this feels wrong.

The Thanos candidates thing doesn’t make sense. Why is Luke Cage being targeted as someone close to Thanos and who Thanos possibly implanted his mind into? Why not suspect Adam, Pip, Eros himself or any Eternal. Get people Thanos actually frequents in the list. Only Gamora made sense.

Even then it’s not that good of a plot. Augh just leave Gamora alone, let her rest. Better yet make peace with Starlin and have him write a story with her.

Cates should also give Thanos a rest, he really can’t write a good Thanos (nor can Jason Aaron for that matter).

Why are the Black Order even working for Hela? Also I miss when Hela was a pretty neutral entity instead of her being straight evil. I also hope she’s not the Thanos in her body.

A Nova fan asked Cates where Rich was and Cates just answered with “keep reading”. I am pretty tired of seeing Rich bounce from title to title once in a blue moon but unfortunately this is what it feels to be a fan of a character that’s not in the MCU or the writer/editor favorite. Still I rather he not appear in the cover of a comic he’s not going to be in because I get unnecessarily happy only to be let down. Also why put the other characters like Adam and Darkhawk anyway? They didn’t do anything either.

The art felt rushed in some panels and better in others, and the coloring wasn’t that great. What is up with Phyla’s cosmic awareness effect. Also at some point you see a panel with Knowhere floating above a planet and it’s painfully obvious they used a low res image of the moon for the planet and just put a greenish blue filter on it. Come on, I know Marvel people need to meet deadlines but I rather this comic comes out a month later and get a better product than this.

Marvel also needs a better quality printer, sometimes the ink comes off if I hold a comic for awhile and gets in my fingers. I also leave finger prints in my comic. It’s annoying AF and it’s not the first time it happened. They either need better quality printers or switch to the cheap paper or I dunno do something about it at the least. All in all it was an OKish issue, not anything great and I think the one thing I liked the most was Peter Quill reading like THE Peter Quill of old.
