Summary: Daughter of a Surgeon mother and a herbalist father, Amata is from a middle class family with dreams of following her parents footsteps in the medical field. Being surrounded by her family’s medical books her whole life, she has a firm grasp on first aid, and is considered a well practiced herbalist by her father.

She met Noctis one year after the adults vanished. Offering medical aid to any kid that needed it. She became immediately well known for her herbal medicine and her kind nature.

She joined up with Noctis after realizing that sooner rather than later, she would be hunted down by the more vicious gangs for her skills if she remained by herself. Hoping Noct’s group can help her perfect her skills, She has henceforth claimed the medical wing of the Citadel and the nearby hospital as her own.

Summary: Born the youngest daughter of a low class family, she fell in love with making things go boom after watching her older brother blow up the microwave when she was 4. Her temper is shorter than her or the fuses of her bombs. She has constantly been made fun of for her height, interests and tomboy-ish attitude.

She joined up with Noct’s group two years after the adults vanished when she was being threatened to join a gang that wanted to use her skills in bomb making to force smaller gangs of kids to join them. She then proceeded to use the same desired skills to destroy their base and managing to ride off in a car that still had its key in the engine. In exchange for her protection, (and to forget that she nearly ran them over.) she agreed to teach others how to safely make bombs to protect the Citadel.

Hannah Shanxi 2157 CE

With little patience, Doctor Alvarez and his small team were ushered by rifle-butt from the surgical suite. Hannah watched them retreat, her eyes wide with desperation, hoping one of them would snap, fight back, cry out. Anything except abandon her to a turian captor in her weakened state. She couldn’t even run.

Once the last turian exited, pulling the wall of screens closed, Hannah and Regidonis were left completely unobserved. The moment they were alone, his hand loosened on her throat, just enough to allow a few breaths of air to flood into her aching lungs. Despite the reprieve, he didn’t release her. His gun stayed fixed beneath her jaw, growing warm against her skin.

“You need to respect a few things about your situation, newcomer,” he said, so close she could smell him, all metal and ozone. She saw little splinters of gold netted in the flashing silver of his eyes. “I am not the alien in this room.” His gun knocked against her chin. “That would be you.”

She held very still and waited for whatever was coming, saving her strength.

“Furthermore,” he said, still inches away. “You need to respect a few things about me. I am no butcher.” The translator glitched around some words; an obscenity, most likely. “In a moment, I am going to release you. Before considering another outburst, please remember that I happen to be holding the finest hand cannon Armax has ever produced, and you are unable to walk.”

He stared at her, waiting for something. All of the hardened plates on his face had loosened, but his expression remained as mysterious as tectonic plates shifting beneath the earth. A powerful force she couldn’t comprehend, taking cities and continents along for the ride. Not knowing what else to do, she simply held his gaze.

The gun dropped away at long last, finally giving Hannah room to properly breathe. Regidonis sat back and rubbed his neck, looking as if he’d been strangled himself. From the covered door came a curt, “Permission to enter,” which Regidonis swiftly answered:

“Make it quick.”

The subordinate who had been sent for rations bowed through the curtain. He deposited an apple, a few thin strips of jerky, and a sachet of clean water. After a telling pause, the officer gave his Captain a stiff salute then left as unceremoniously as he’d entered.

Regidonis looked at the rations for a moment, then turned his knife-sharp eyes on Hannah and said, “Your body is at risk of atrophy. Your doctor told us that you must have been giving most of your rations to your child, saving almost nothing for yourself.” His voice sounded haggard, exhausted. “Rest assured: I made certain she was not passed over.”

With a flick of his wrist, he summoned a holographic imager and began a playback of Jane. The vid showed her ferociously setting upon some kind of porridge, washing it down with a fruit-flavored electrolyte solution. Hannah reached out to touch her daughter’s face, but her fingers ghosted through the holo and knocked against the hard plating of the turian’s armor instead. She set her fingers into his arm in a killing grip.

Calm and slow, he stopped the playback and said, “She is quite safe. I will bring her back to you as soon as you and I come to an understanding.”

He held out the packet of water, motionlessly waiting for her to take it. Offering food and water moments after offering her the business end of his gun. She pierced the seal and drank, half expecting it to taste like brimstone, but it was water, plain and simple. Vaguely metallic from the field pack, warmed by the heat of his body.

He offered the fruit next. She bit into it so eagerly that her teeth caught her own lip, drawing blood. She didn’t care; as the sweet juice sloppily dribbled across her chin, she moaned out of pure relief.

“Good,” he said, nodding, his body language once again too familiar to be real. “Get your strength back up. You’ll need it.”

While he watched, she devoured the rest of the apple, then set into the jerky. He waited until she was completely finished, then leaned forward.

“I appreciate that you have taken an enormous personal risk today,” he said. “As of this morning, you are conspiring with the enemy, and with your own child’s life on the line. Your distrust is well-earned. I can respect that.” In a much quieter tone, he sad, “Hannah Shepard, I need your immediate assistance or a great many people are going to die.”

It remained unnerving, hearing her name in his mouth. Perhaps he’d failed to notice, or just didn’t care, but a great many people had already died on Shanxi. She frowned at him, waiting for the terms.

“I would have preferred to avoid risking a civilian with this job. And you, sole caretaker of a young child… In the name of all that is—” he cut himself off. “General Williams assures me you have ample military training, that you can handle a crisis.” A pause, as he dragged a hand across his face. “If the Primarch wants my head for this, so be it. In the interest of peacekeeping, I have decided to give you the same debrief I gave your General.”

He thought for some time, apparently searching for the least treasonous approach.

Jane looked at the bandage on her hip. There wasn't even much of a stump anymore, just the ball joint left that was scheduled to be removed in a few hours. "Sir, I can't afford--"

"The Alliance is paying, and for the therapy too."

She glared. "To keep my mouth shut?"

"No. To prep you for N7 training. Staff Lieutenant Jane Shepard, as the last officer in command before the last of your team was lost, you’ve been field promoted to Lieutenant Commander. Your quick reactions, even when falling upside down impressed the brass to bump you into N7."

"I'm being rewarded for failing my team?" She shook her head. "That's... Fu-Messed up. And I know messed up."

"Yeah. I can imagine how you feel."

A small suspicious part of her noticed that something was up. "What is really going on?"

"I don't know. Your recovery will be slow, but they'll be starting the book training before the physical part when you return from medical leave."

Jane closed her eyes as she felt a pair of boxes be placed in her hands. "Fuck."

"My condolences, Shepard. Commander Trapper was my friend, too."

"Thank you, sir." The doctor shooed her guest away and pushed the button to inject the sleep agent again.

“You’re a strong, brave, woman, Shepard.”

Her leg hurt where it used to be, and she didn’t do anything very brave.

A lit cigarette was lifted to the mouth of a shadowy figure. A woman became visible, walking to him as they observed a blue giant be devoured by its denser neighboring star.

"Miranda, report." The smoking person was male.

"The Alliance is uncertain about suggesting Shepard for active duty, even with the Captain of the Odette vouching for her mental health. While he was not acting under any of Cerberus' direct suggestions, I recommend putting his proposal through."

The other sighed and lowered the cigarette. "Jane Shepard is one of many candidates for Humanity's first Spectre. We have others."

Miranda lowered her head for a moment. "Then why put the investment into her replacement leg?"

"She didn't do much of anything spectacular in order to survive the Thresher Maw."

"Then why the leg?"

"She survived. I want to see what she will do now."

"Have her put into active duty. On Earth, she under constant Alliance watch, and wary of being locked away into a mental health facility. Or she would be, based on her previous psychological profile."

"An interesting thought."

Miranda's eyebrow twitched.

The man's silhouette hinted at a smile. "It is good to see you are concerned about all of our candidates."

"Yes, the other was not showing nearly as well as Shepard siblings. On Torfun, the Butcher was not our other candidate either, but two people we had not considered. It is a shame the Akuze Rescue turned into a disaster before Shepard even arrived."

"Report received."

"Thank you." Miranda disappeared.

The man hit a few buttons. "I explicitly said not to use Akuze, doctor."

"I'm so sorry. The signal was jumbled."

"You will be punished for your failure. But not today." He ended the call before looking at the stars around him. The Thresher Maw project had some prospect survivors who might revenge. "Or the younger Shepard will."

"It is fitting that Shepard, our most scarred mentally and physically candidate, be a Spectre. Too bad she will now be unpredictable after finding the truth about Akuze. If not her, then her brother will be a Spectre. But he will also be unpredictable after learning the truth, liable to seeking revenge for what had been done to her personally or through the justice system." He lowered his hand to tap off the burnt ashes of the stick. Taking in a slow drag he spoke again. "I will need to adjust our plans regardless."

There was only a slight, but low-ranged sound, creak of machinery to respond to him.
