The Great Ace Attorney Final Trial Commentary: Day 2, Part 1
This is an ongoing mini-commentary covering the final trial of The Great Ace Attorney (Resolve) in line-by-line detail. Itās written from a perspective of already knowing the full truth of things, so there will be spoilers for facts that only get revealed later on in the trial. This is not a commentary to read along with oneās first playthrough!
(The commentary will update on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Check this blog to find any other parts currently posted, and if itās not yet finished, follow to catch future updates!)
Now that weāre below the readmore, I can add that this isnāt quite a commentary for everything going on in the final trial. Itās focused specifically on Kazuma and whatās going on in his head, only covering things which are relevant to him in some way (for the most part). I already had a lot to say about him in a big analysis post over on my main blog ā but I have even more to say about him during the trial in even more detail, so here we are!
Weāre starting day 2 here, aka the first trial day of case 2-5.
Writing the commentary for this day of the trial is going to feel a little odd for me, because Iāve essentially already done it before ā just in character as Ryunosuke, instead of as myself. This was a chapter in my AU fic in which this trial day goes off the rails towards the end and Kazuma gets arrested for Gregsonās murder, because he should have been and I am forever salty that it didnāt happen in canon. The purpose of the chapter in the fic, even though it was 90% retreading canon events, was to utilise all the existing buildup the game had that made it seem like things were headed in that direction, so that my AU could actually deliver the payoff it deserved to have. There are so many really good bits that would be so delightful if they were foreshadowing what was going to happen to Kazuma, except for the fact that they arenāt. I am going to be compelled to point all of these out and grumble about them here.
Here's one to get us started, just as Ryunosuke heads into the courtroom.
Ryunosuke:Ā (Today I battle with another in pursuit of the truth. My best friend, Kazuma Asogi, who I trust more than anyone else in the world.)
Like, yes, this is adorable in and of itself, that Ryunosuke still trusts Kazuma that much even after the way heās been acting since he came back. But! Imagine how much juicier this line would be if it was followed by Ryunosuke getting Kazuma arrested for murder! That is absolutely what I thought it existed to foreshadow on my first playthrough and asghjkghjdghjdfs.
Stronghart:Ā āYesterdayās proceedings brought to light a shocking and disturbing fact: There was a side to the victim, Inspector Tobias Gregson, that was unknown to his superiors at Scotland Yard.ā Kazuma:Ā āYes, he was carrying out operations in secret, which Scotland Yard knew nothing about.ā Stronghart:Ā āAnd in those clandestine operations, he had an accomplice.ā Kazuma:Ā āMr Daley Vigil, who would be given the inspectorās identificationā¦ā
During what is supposed to be Kazumaās opening statement, Stronghart is having just as much if not more of a part in it, and theyāre both practically finishing each otherās sentences. (Here is just one example of their tandem speech extremely coming across this way.) Clearly Stronghart, who is determined to keep Kazuma in line after his shenanigans with Vigil yesterday, firmly instructed him on what he was supposed to talk about, and apparently they may have even spent a while rehearsing this speech together. No wonder Kazuma wasnāt surprised to see Stronghart here at the judgeās bench today.
Stronghart:Ā āWhich brings us to the crucial issue of the victimās time of death. The defence yesterday proposed a suggestion that the victim may have been killed one day earlier. This was based largely on the discovery that the victimās pocket watch had not been wound.ā
Not really! It was also based equally if not more so on the scorch marks on the candle, which have still not been explained as anything other than evidence that a gun was never fired there at all. But nah, Stronghart is just as happy to draw attention away from that as Kazuma is.
(Since he knows the full truth of the murder, Stronghart is also the only person who may be aware of the even more damning evidence that proves a gun could not possibly have been fired in the Fresno Street room. But heās especially not going to draw any attention to that.)
Kazuma:Ā āThe prosecution has something to report on that subject, My Lord.ā Stronghart:Ā āReally? Go ahead, Prosecutor Asogi.ā
Geez, look at him acting like he wasnāt expecting Kazuma to bring this (the autopsy report) up at all and this definitely wasnāt all rehearsed and planned out.
Stronghart:Ā āBut the official opinion of the investigation team was made clear yesterday. That the time of death was 5 p.m. on 1st November.ā Kazuma:Ā āThere are indications of an attempt to disguise the real time of death, however. It seems that the natural decaying process of the victimās body may have been slowed by keeping it chilled.ā Stronghart:Ā āThatās out of the question.ā
Stronghart apparently also elected to put himself on the ānope itās definitely impossibleā side of this little scripted exchange. In reality, the entire first testimony weāre about to have is to examine the possibility that Gregson was killed the day before, and that testimony was very obviously Stronghartās idea, so he was perfectly okay with this avenue being explored! (because he intends it to end either with nothing substantial or with apparent proof that van Zieks did it anyway.)
Kazuma:Ā āItās conceivable that he was killed in the course of his secret activities.ā Stronghart:Ā āDo I sense that the prosecution has some information regarding those activities?ā
Gasp, look at Stronghartās amazing sixth sense to pick up on this, and not at all that he blatantly knew Kazuma was about to bring this up because he told him to, nope, nothing suspicious here.
Honestly, this is all remarkably brazen, but I guess since Stronghart has a licence to do whatever the heck he wants, he doesnāt care how obvious it looks because nobodyās going to call him out for it anyway.
(Also, look at Kazuma acting like heās entertaining the idea that Gregson was killed during his secret outing on the 31st, when really he hasnāt entertained that at all because it was definitely van Zieks, okay.)
Kazuma:Ā āScotland Yard put an enormous effort into investigating that precise matter yesterday. I think we should begin by presenting the results of that investigation work.ā
Once again, note Kazumaās avoidance of giving a direct answer to Stronghartās question. He sure does have some first-hand information about Gregsonās real secret activities that day, but he phrases his response in a way that shifts the focus onto something he knows full well is a red herring. Again, he is so good at doing this without actively lying.
--- Testimony 1 ---
Ryunosuke:Ā āSmuggled goods?!ā
Ryunosuke is quite surprised to hear this brought up out of nowhere ā as he should be. It seems he can already tell on some level that this is a complete wild goose chase that has nothing to do with the actual case.
Spare a thought for Kazuma, who gives us a summary of the smuggling case and must have spent some time researching this information to recite it in court, while knowing this is irrelevant and fully intending to throw it all out the first chance he gets.
Kazuma:Ā āThereās no question: the accused, Barok van Zieks, was present.ā [ā¦] Kazuma:Ā āIn short, Lord van Zieks had ample opportunity to murder the victim.ā
Kazuma looks very smug about suggesting that van Zieks could easily have murdered Gregson at the gentlemanās clubā¦ even though he knows for a fact that couldnāt have happened. Granted, heās intending to throw all this out by revealing what Gregson was really doing that day, but the fact that heās looking so smug about the idea that this irrelevant point throws even more suspicion onto van Zieks is a bit much. Kazuma, please.
(This is one of the very rare instances of Kazuma referring to him as āLord van Zieksā, incidentally! Iā¦ canāt think of any specific reason why this one might be an exception, alas. Guess he just ever-so-occasionally slips up and falls back into habits from his amnesiac days.)
Ryunosuke:Ā āBut I was hoping to find out the name of the club.ā Kazuma:Ā āThat wonāt be necessary.ā Ryunosuke:Ā āWhat?ā Kazuma:Ā āItās conceivable that the club might be used again by the smugglers in future. Thereforeā¦ the prosecution has been asked not to reveal the name in these proceedings.ā
Note Kazumaās wording here ā he has been asked not to reveal the name of the club. Itās not actually his decision, and he doesnāt actually want to hide that information. Heās just putting up a token amount of resistance here, presumably because Stronghart instructed him to, but heās bound to be trusting that Ryunosuke will keep pushing. And when he doesā¦
Stronghart:Ā āThe prosecution is rightfully exercising caution, I imagine.ā Kazuma:Ā āā¦ā¦ā¦ No, My Lord. The prosecution has no objection.ā Stronghart:Ā āā¦!ā Ryunosuke:Ā āKazuma?ā
Too bad, Stronghart ā turns out, as the lead prosecutor on the case, Kazuma gets the final say whether you like it or not.
Ryunosuke also has an interesting little reaction there, like heās surprised at Kazuma suddenly changing his tune, or perhaps relieved to see an indication of his friend acting on his own terms and not what heās been ordered to do.
Kazuma:Ā āThereās no question that Inspector Gregson was looking into these black market dealings. Howeverā¦ itās not yet been established that he was on that particular trail on the day in question.ā
And here he goes, opening up the possibility that Gregson wasnāt there that day at all, to allow Ryunosuke room to prove it, despite what Stronghart wants.
One incidental thing to note here is that Ryunosuke is now addressing Kazuma with his given name in court, and will continue to do so for the rest of the trial, even though he was calling him āProsecutor Asogiā in the trial yesterday. Perhaps itās got something to do with the conversation they had in Kazumaās office yesterday afternoon, the first thing even vaguely close to a proper conversation between friends that theyāve had since Kazumaās return. It seems like that closed the distance between them just slightly, enough for Ryunosuke to internalise that this is still Kazuma, albeit a Kazuma with a lot of unexpected emotional baggage, and start instinctively defaulting to calling him by the more familiar name again even in court. (Although this must be on a pretty subconscious level, since we still had Ryunosuke in that scene outwardly telling Kazuma that heās changed.)
Ryunosuke:Ā āThe Grouse? What sort of a club is that?ā [ā¦] Kazuma:Ā āTheyāre not places where a foreign student like you would be readily admitted.ā Ryunosuke:Ā āHave you looked into the mirror recently?ā
I love the way Kazuma tries to project his foreign student status onto Ryunosuke alone. Kazuma is above that, right? Heāll definitely be taken more seriously by the British judiciary and not be written off because heās ājust a foreign studentā, wonāt heā¦?
Ryunosuke:Ā āAs I understand it, theyāre places where well-to-do gentlemen socialise with friends and colleagues.ā Kazuma:Ā āDonāt imagine for a second that a foreign student like you would be admitted.ā Ryunosuke:Ā (Seriously, is your mirror cracked or something?)
And he does it again, just a few lines later. His particular hypocritical insistence on this just really delights me, which led to me figuring out what itās implying about his feelings on his own foreign-student status.
Stronghart:Ā āIf it wasnāt a gentlemanās clubā¦ then what was it?ā Ryunosuke:Ā āā¦A steamship.ā Kazuma:Ā āYou thinkā¦ itās a shipā¦?ā
Thereās a subtle screen-shake on Kazumaās line there, which I like, as it implies an undercurrent of something more going on in his head. He knows it was a ship, and on the one hand he must be glad and proud that Ryunosukeās zeroing in on the real truthā¦ and yet also perhaps a little worried what that might end up revealing about him.
(After all, Kazuma may well not have been expecting Ryunosuke to prove this much, since this isnāt just proving it wasnāt at the club, but also proving where it really was. He canāt have imagined Ryunosuke would randomly have Mikotobaās steamship ticket on him in order to cross-reference the shipās name.)
Kazuma goes on to argue that it couldnāt have been the SS Grouse because it hadnāt docked in Britain yet on the day in question. He has to feel kind of torn about putting up resistance to this, too ā on the one hand he wants Ryunosuke to prove the smuggling irrelevant so that he can reveal what Gregson was really up to and is just saying this to make Ryunosukeās argument stronger, but on the other hand, perhaps a part of him doesnāt want Ryunosuke to prove how Gregson got onto that ship in Dunkirk (and that he brought someone else with himā¦)
Kazuma:Ā āThen show your evidence for that assertion!ā Ryunosuke:Ā āā¦Very well.ā Kazuma:Ā āā¦!ā
Kazuma has an interesting little reaction here as Ryunosuke unflinchingly announces heāll present his evidence. Heās got to have been expecting Ryunosuke to have something and not just be making things up, but perhaps heās a little worried about exactly what he has and how damning for him it might end up being.
If youāre playing this part of the trial from chapter-select mode (like Iām doing right now for this commentary), the Court Record will assume you havenāt yet examined Gregsonās trunk to find the passport inside it. Which then makes the fact that I have to do so right now to be able to present the passport kind of awkward, because it will be a vital plot point very soon that Kazuma shouldnāt know that the passport was inside the trunk. So uh. Letās just have Ryunosuke hide behind his bench to sneakily look at the trunk and take the passport out, Kazuma totally wonāt see that, itās fine.
(Of course, we can assume that canonically Ryunosuke took the passport out of the trunk at some point yesterday so that this isnāt an issue.)
Stronghart:Ā āWhatās this? A passport for travel issued to the victim?ā Kazuma:Ā āā¦ā¦ā¦ā
Kazuma keeps himself poker-faced as the passport is presented. But as Ryunosuke shows that heās very much figured out what it meansā¦
Ryunosuke:Ā āā¦thereās a distinct possibility he wasnāt even in the country!ā Kazuma:Ā āā¦!ā
ā¦he flinches back in shock. Itās a little bit of an odd delayed reaction, but I do think heās realising here that Ryunosuke having seen that passport is a Bad Sign for him being able to keep his own dodgy actions hidden.
(And maybe he also remembers where Gregson was keeping the passport, so the fact that Ryunosuke has seen it means heās also found a certain metal trunk that a very damning piece of evidence was left inā¦)
Kazuma:Ā āā¦ā¦ā¦ Ha ha ha ha ha hah! Iām impressed, Ryunosuke Naruhodo! I certainly didnāt expect you to get your hands on that passport.ā
But Kazuma regains his composure pretty quickly, of course. Heās fine! Heās definitely fine and proud of his friend for figuring things out and just wasnāt expecting him to have seen the passport, hmmmm, nope, nothing suspicious about that specific point.
Ryunosuke:Ā āWhat? You meanā¦ you knew about this?ā
Meanwhile Ryunosuke is several steps behind those of us in the commentary who know everything Kazuma knows, and is only just catching onto the fact that Kazuma was aware of at least some of this all along. He seems pretty shocked here, presumably at realising that his friend was hiding information from him. He never openly picked up on any of the earlier hints at this ā of which there were a lot ā perhaps because he doesnāt want to think about how underhanded Kazumaās capable of being.
Kazuma:Ā āThe prosecutionās strategy for this trial has been laid down by the Crown prosecution office:ā
Instead of directly answering this question, and also diverting the conversation entirely away from the matter of the passport before he gives too much away, Kazuma goes on to explain that this whole angle about smuggling was something he was ordered to do. He says it was from the Prosecutorās Office, and I guess on a technical level it was, but letās be real ā it was Stronghart. Kazuma probably even knows this, given their blatantly rehearsed opening statementā¦ but it seems like directly calling out Stronghart for this is not a risk heās willing to take when there isnāt much reward for it.
Kazuma:Ā āI think the Prosecutorās Office is trying to hide something.ā Ryunosuke:Ā āWhat?!ā Kazuma:Ā āAnd now that youāve expertly disproven their assertionā¦ I intend to reveal what I believe that something to be.ā Stronghart:Ā āWhat are you playing at, Prosecutor Asogi?ā
Stronghart is glaring at Kazuma, clearly Not Happy at him going against orders like this. Again: those orders were so obviously from him, especially since it was all to hide Gregsonās role as the Reaperās tactician, which Stronghart in particular would quite like to keep hidden, thanks.
Kazuma:Ā āA courtroom is a forum for the truth, My Lord. Which is why itās my duty to present all the facts, without exception.ā
Kazumaās entire speech here, and particularly these lines, really give the sense that he cares a lot about doing things honourably and without corruption in order to uncover the whole truth. Which, in principle, he does!
And yet. All the facts, without exception? He hasnāt exactly been keeping to the word of that, now, has he ā and he still isnāt planning to.
Stronghart:Ā āLet me guessā¦ This was your intention from the outset, wasnāt it?ā
Of course it was; of course Kazuma wanted to reveal Gregson working for the Reaper, just to paint an even bigger picture of how completely terrible van Zieks is. It doesnāt take much for Stronghart to figure that Kazuma planned this all along, either. There was a bit in Stronghartās office during yesterdayās investigation, in which Kazuma was being told off for going off the rails with Vigil in that dayās trial. Stronghart ordered him to stay in line next time, and he mentioned to Ryunosuke that if Kazuma continued not to, āI will be forced to take stepsā. Apparently those steps amounted to āscript his approach to the trial and oversee it as the judge to make sure he stays in lineā. And of course he still didnāt, because Kazuma is stubborn and doesnāt bow to authority for the heck of it.
But likeā¦ surely Stronghart would have known thereād be a good chance Kazuma wasnāt going to behave, even being directly overseen like this? What further steps was he planning to take if (when) Kazuma inevitably didnāt?
ā¦Apparently, the answer to this is ānothing at all (other than some displeased glares)ā. So that whole mini plotline about this amounted to barely anything. I guess it gives Stronghart an excuse to be the judge for the final trial days, but honestly I wouldnāt have batted an eye at him doing that anyway, minor powerplay with Kazuma or no.
Iād thought, on my first playthrough, that Kazumaās defiance here was going to lead to Stronghart realising he canāt control Kazuma and that he needs to get rid of him, therefore causing Stronghart to deliberately nudge things towards getting Kazuma arrested once the assassin thing is revealed a little later in the trial. It would have made perfect sense! Kazuma ought to be just as much if not more of a threat that Stronghart would want to get rid of than van Zieks is, given that heās just proven himself uncontrollable and has a lot more reason to seek the truth about the Professor case than van Zieks does. But somehow, canonically, Stronghart just shrugs and decides, nah, getting rid of van Zieks is totally still the greater priority, for some reason, letās just let things continue like this.
Grumble grumble Kazuma should have been arrested, look at how much sense it would have made.
(It isnāt even made at all clear why Stronghart is so determined to get rid of van Zieks in the first place. Iāve seen it suggested elsewhere that itās because, what with him vying for promotion, he wants to put an end to the Reaper at last and pin it all on the poor convenient scapegoat so that none of it can be traced back to him. I guess thatās the most reasonable explanation, but it'd be nice if there was some proper indication of it somewhere in-story.)
Anyway yes, Kazuma dramatically announces that Gregson was on a mission for the Reaper that day.
Kazuma:Ā āThe prosecution made an assertion in court yesterday:ā Kazuma: [yesterday] āInspector Gregson was investigating the identity of the Reaper. When he discovered the location of the manās secret hideoutā¦ he was killed. As Iām sure everyone can imagineā¦ by the Reaperās hand!ā Kazuma:Ā āBut in realityā¦ the truth is the opposite of that.ā
He makes sure to clear up any confusion caused by his previous argument by citing it and pointing out it was incorrect. But conveniently, he doesnāt mention the fact that he already knew it was incorrect when he made it yesterday, because unlike the rest of the police force, he did not learn about Gregson working for the Reaper only yesterday afternoon.
Kazuma:Ā āBarok van Zieks never carried out any of the actual killings. Whenever the Reaperās victims lost their lives, he always had a cast-iron alibi. Which tells usā¦ that he must have had an accomplice.ā
Sure, Kazuma, it definitely tells us that, because Barok van Zieks must definitely be the Reaper, no other possibility. This couldnāt possibly tell us that maybe van Zieks just isnāt actually the Reaper at all.
(Granted, he is thinking along the right lines, since the real Reaper mastermind also does not carry out the killings himself. He also just knows that to be a fact, since heās had Gregson approach him as merely the Reaperās tactician. But his logic for arguing this here is based entirely on his tunnel-visioned āvan Zieks is definitely the Reaperā premise and not anything rational.)
Susato:Ā āWe also arrived at the same conclusion, didnāt we? That Inspector Gregson was operating as the Reaper.ā
You and Ryunosuke didnāt exactly āarrive at that conclusionā, though, Susato. Van Zieks told you that heād figured it out during his investigations, and you believed his judgement, thatās all.
Ryunosuke:Ā āBarok van Zieks is not the Reaper!ā Kazuma:Ā āA predictable responseā¦ from someone whoās advocating for the man.ā
Nice mental deflection there, Kazuma. Ryunosukeās totally only insisting this because itās his job to as a lawyer, definitely not at all because he genuinely believes in van Zieks and he might be right to or anything, nope, no need to think about that possibility.
Ryunosuke argues that Gregson couldnāt have been acting as the Reaper on the Grouse because nobody was killed there.
Kazuma:Ā āā¦Pfft!ā Ryunosuke:Ā āWhatās so funny?ā Kazuma:Ā āYouāre right, of course. No suspicious deaths were reported on board that ship. But I think perhaps youāve missed the point. Thatās precisely why Inspector Gregson lost his life!ā
Itās kind of painful how Kazuma seems to think this is amusing. Van Zieks murdering Gregson for the oh-so-terrible slight of not killing his target this one time is so obvious in Kazumaās head that he snickers at the thought that Ryunosuke stumbled into helping him argue that.
Ryunosuke:Ā āWhat?!ā
Understandably, Ryunosuke has no idea why Kazuma seems to think that makes sense, because it doesnāt.
Kazuma:Ā āThereās no question that Tobias Gregson was heavily involved in the Reaperās activities. You may just be an apprentice, but if youāve spent any time at Scotland Yard, you must have heard rumoursā¦ā
Rumours arenāt evidence, Kazuma! Granted, he also cited just a moment ago that Gregsonās secret notebook contains details of the assassination plots, which is actually evidence, but it is something that he tries to bring the rumours into it too. Perhaps itās that he knows for a fact Gregson was part of the Reaper for reasons he canāt reveal without incriminating himself, so itās frustrating him that he still canāt quite treat it as fact in court, leading to him trying to back it up in flimsy ways as well as solid ones. Alas, how much easier Kazumaās job in this trial would be if he was just willing to incriminate himself.
--- Testimony 2 ---
Ryunosuke:Ā āI know Judge Jigoku! And I saw him the day before yesterday! Here in London! So I know for a fact that the man hasnāt been assassinated!ā Kazuma:Ā āAs I saidā¦ the Reaper failed.ā Ryunosuke:Ā āOhā¦ā Kazuma:Ā āGregson missed his chance to kill his mark and returned to British shores.ā
One thing the narrative never properly discusses about Gregsonās mission here isā¦ was he even supposed to kill his mark in the first place? Gregson was the tactician, not the actual assassin. Itās his job to investigate the marks and figure out the best opportunities to kill them, and then to pass that information onto the assassin who will do the actual deed. If Gregson goes on a trip to investigate a mark with an assassin in tow, surely thatās just an information-gathering mission? Surely Gregson himself would usually try not to be present during the actual killings?
Granted, thatās all moot in this instance since this was never a real Reaper mission, and actually Kazuma was sent along so that he would, in theory, kill Gregson, but still. I guess the narrative just never discusses this because it would unnecessarily complicate things. And clearly we cannot be bringing up any possible flaws in Kazumaās very sensible logic here, right.
Kazuma:Ā āBut the Reaper wouldnāt tolerate the mistake. So he killed the inspectorā¦ personally. The Reaper of course being the accusedā¦ Barok van Zieks!ā Stronghart:Ā āItāsā¦ an undeniably logical argument.ā
It really isnāt!!!!! There are so many things wrong with this argument that itās honestly kind of hilarious.
Itās ridiculous that the Reaper would get so mad at Gregson failing to kill the mark when heās not even supposed to be the assassin ā as I said, this was surely just an information-gathering mission if Gregson was there. Even if it wasnāt, the killing itself is still not Gregsonās job. The Reaper should be getting mad at Kazuma for failing, if anyone.
Itās also just ridiculous that the Reaper would go so far as to kill any henchman of his for one small mistake that didnāt actually have any negative consequences. Gregson can still try again, surely? Sometimes unexpected things come up that make assassinations not safe to go for without getting caught! If he killed his men for every tiny thing like this, heād run out of men very quickly.
It's also ridiculous that the Reaper, a very careful serial killer who has kept himself hidden for ten whole years, would apparently carry out this retribution by shooting Gregson in a house in a populated street, thus immediately getting himself caught red-handed like the most bumbling criminal imaginable.
And of course, this entire argument hinges on the assumed premise that Barok van Zieks is the Reaper, something Kazuma has still not shown any proof for whatsoever.
And, even if we somehow take everything about this argument as solid, it still only āprovesā a potential motive for van Zieks committing the crime! It does not prove that he did it!
But Kazuma realises none of this ridiculousness. No, of course van Zieks is so petty and vindictive as to murder his henchmen for one tiny mistake that isnāt really even part of their job, and of course heās stupid and bumbling enough to get himself caught for it, and of course he is definitely the Reaper, because he is The Worst Person Ever.
Stronghart agreeing that this argument is logical is laughable ā but then, Stronghart is apparently (for some unclear reason) still on the Letās Get Van Zieks Convicted train, so heās happy to agree with anything thatāll let him do that so long as nobody questions it.
Ryunosuke:Ā (Kazumaā¦ You planned for the trial to go this way all along, didnāt you?)
Which even Ryunosuke isnāt doing! Heās only marvelling at Kazuma having planned this ā if anything, the way heās thinking this reads as if he feels cornered. Heās not at all considering that this is a terrible argument actually. I would side-eye his response to this the most, since he doesnāt have such a good excuse for being wrong as Kazuma or Stronghart, butā¦ I suppose this just speaks to how much Ryunosuke idolises his best friend. It doesnāt occur to him to ever expect Kazumaās arguments to be flawed, because Kazumaās the best at what he does, right?
I love the sheer audacity of van Zieks striding up to the witness stand during his own trial and slamming his leg on it to express his displeasure at the bullshit going on. Itās so very him. And I really canāt blame him right now.
Kazuma:Ā āThe accused has no right to speak uninvited in court. You will return to the dock.ā
Kazuma is Not Happy. He may have been fine with calling van Zieks to testify unnecessarily yesterday, but in that instance, he was in control and was doing so to prove van Zieks to be a terrible liar. Canāt have van Zieks speaking out of turn and saying things that might make people think heās not a horrible person.
Also, one little detail I enjoy during this bit is that the angle of Kazumaās eyeline in his poses while heās addressing van Zieks is just slightly lower than normal. It gives the subtle sense that heās not looking van Zieks in the eye. Of course he wouldnāt want to do that.
Van Zieks:Ā āThat girl is no detective.ā [ā¦] Van Zieks:Ā āRepeating rumours heard around the Yardā¦ Reading entries from a notebook of unconfirmed originā¦ Thatās not testimony. Itās practically a script. No doubt the rest of this trial will go exactly as youāve clearly planned.ā
Van Zieks is essentially accusing Kazuma of being corrupt, of having rigged the entire trial to get him convicted unfairly. And itās not that Kazuma isnāt being kind of corrupt right now, what with his very terrible argument that Stronghart is conveniently choosing to agree withā¦ but itās not really in the way that van Zieks is suggesting here.
The first testimony we had today, about the smuggling, really was practically a script. That whole line of argument was bullshitted by the Prosecutorās Office (aka: Stronghart) to come up with something to hide the truth about Gregson acting for the Reaper. And Gina, a very inexperienced detective who doesnāt know much of whatās going on and is the most willing to accept anything that doesnāt involve Gregson working for the Reaper, was called to give the testimony, even though all she was really doing was reciting what sheād been told to say about the smuggling. And Kazuma didnāt like that he had to script that part of the trial, and was happy when Ryunosuke managed to disprove it for him!
This second testimony of Ginaās is a lot less scripted, though. Sheās stating actual facts about whatās written in Gregsonās secret notebook (the notebook she found, so sheās a relevant person to testify about it), and the purpose of the testimony is to prove that Gregson was indeed working for the Reaper. This is something that van Zieks knows to be true thanks to his own investigations, some of which involved that very notebook! And Gina is the one person whoās actually trying to argue against this angle on Gregson in her testimony, by adding an unwarranted personal-opinion line at the end about how surely he was really just investigating the Reaper. So sheās hardly a witness whoās biased towards Kazumaās case.
The actual problem here is that Kazuma is taking the true and backed-up facts that Gregson was working for the Reaper and went on a Reaper mission that day, and using those to spin a thoroughly flawed argument about how this means that van Zieks, who is totally the Reaper, totally killed him. Van Zieksā¦ doesnāt quite seem able to see that. His own hatred of Kazuma is twisting his judgement just a little out of whack on this matter, too.
(Itās pretty amusing that van Zieksās mistake here is that heās assuming Kazuma is being corrupt in a more competent way than how he is actually being corrupt. Everybody is overestimating Kazumaās ability to form a coherent argument here. Which is fair, because Kazuma really is so much better than this the rest of the time!)
Kazuma:Ā āā¦ā¦ā¦ā
Kazumaās response to van Zieks insinuating that heās rigged this testimony is nothing but a silent glare. Maybe he feels somewhat secure here, because at least he knows that he hasnāt really rigged the testimony at all.
(He was trying to bring the rumours into it, though. Van Zieks isnāt wrong to call him out on that bit.)
Van Zieks:Ā āIn your mind, Iām sure I am the Reaperā¦ who sent your father to the gallows all those years ago.ā Kazuma:Ā āā¦!ā
Kazuma remains in the same pose, but his text box implies a slightly more intense reaction to van Zieks bringing up his father, because of course. I really like how van Zieks is able to empathise with Kazuma to some extent and understand how he must feel about the death of his father, even though van Zieks believes that Genshin deserved it!
Van Zieks:Ā āBut youāre in danger of becoming a far more sinister Reaper yourselfā¦ by attempting to have me condemned with this feeble excuse for testimony.ā Kazuma:Ā āWhat did you say?ā
This is the only part of van Zieksās words that gets a verbal rise out of Kazuma. Of course heās especially not pleased at the insinuation that heās being worse than van Zieks himself in the way heās approaching this. And, hey, while van Zieks is off about the precise ways in which Kazumaās being corrupt right now, heās not wrong to suggest that at all! Kazuma, please take a step back and look at yourself before you become the very kind of demon that youāre trying to fight.
This delightful little exchange gets interrupted by Susato and Ryunosuke, as the latter appeals for van Zieks to remain in the stand for the cross-examination, since he might know important information. Itās almost like heās the one who actually has proper information on the testimonyās topic of Gregson being part of the Reaper, because he literally agrees with what the testimonyās arguing! Not such a corrupt testimony, really, is it, van Zieks?
(This trial day is short enough that it isnāt split apart with a save point, but I have so much to say about it that Iām splitting it into two anyway! So Iām stopping here, just before we start the actual cross-examination.)

Just had some headcanons about Machi pop into my head that I wanted to share with yall. So we know this poor girl struggles with "perfect"/neat things right? Well I was thinking about some healthy coping mechanisms she could develop to replace the whole 'breaking property/living in a dump' thing & here's what I got so far -
1. She always tries to wear odd socks (unless she's invited somewhere nice)
2. Ayame & Mine help her find cool asymmetrical stuff to wear, how to make clashing colours/patterns work for her & teach her how to sew up her old clothes in a more "punk rock" way (after Yuki & Kakeru explain some of her issues with perfection)
3. Tohru gently points out that she dosn't have to tie her laces the same way on both shoes if she dosn't want to
4. Haru & Rin (awkwardly on her part) teach her the power of acessorising (ie. wearing only one earing, putting on an uneven amount of bracelets/rings/necklaces, adding paper clips of different sizes & colours to your clothing & Machi later ends up adding stuff like buttons to her outfits/belongings as well which Haru & Rin are tottally surppotive of despite thier difference in style) & hair/makeup which (thanks to Yuki's advice) they make sure to keep slightly messy (Kimi laughed at it at first until Momiji made her feel bad after he told her that Machi had gone to the bathroon & wiped off all the make up & undid the hair style so Kimi bought her some limited edition Mogeta merch, after asking for Yuki's advice, in apolgey & started referring to Machi's new hair/makeup style as "punk chic" whenever anyone tried to mock Machi about her new look)
5. her & Momiji go on a crazy tie dying adventure (much to Hatori's grumbling & Mayu's amusement)
6. Kormaki gets her into collecting second hand fridge magnets which she then later uses in her work (my version of post-serise Machi is an artist) once the magnetism finally wears off
7. Kagura teaches her how to fix up old plushies (Machi likes creating Mogeta inspired characters) & gives Machi all her old cat ones to work on (Machi descides not to ask why Yuki's cousin was seemingly once obssesd with orange cats because she looks rather embrassed & a little sad when she hands over her collection)
8. Kyo reluctantly teaches her how to cook a few simple dishes (Tohru comes over as well & Yuki insists her food is better but Machi prefers Kyo's simple style of presentation so it's eventually descided that Kyo & her will do the cooking & Tohru & Yuki will deal with the cleaning which Yuki agrees to becuse cleaning is still difficult for Machi but Kyo says it's actually because no matter how much Tohru tried to train him rat boy knows he would never be able to do anything in the kitchen but burn water)
9. Kakeru teaches her the skills of 'excessive badge & sticker decorating' as well as giving eachother fake tattoos (Kisa congratulates Hiro on not saying anything rude to Yuki's girlfriend about her appreance after they first meet her)
10. Cuts her hair short (she delibretly makes it very choppy) once she enters university, where the rules are less strict about your apprence (at least it is if your at art college), & she also regulary wears diffrent coloured wigs (her favourites being a dark red one & a rainbow one) whenever she wants to temporarily change her appearance (beacuse she didn't want to commit to just one look, still wanted to have the ability to quickly "become invisable" again & she heard from Kimi that exsseive hair die-ing could permantly destroy her hair & scalp) it takes her until she's 30 to try out shaving all her hair off (she worried she'd look sick/crazy or not feminine enough) & everyone's really surppotive (though Kimi dose cry a bit, Rin & Haru aren't there when her hair is being shaved & Kyo is a slightly confused as he'd always thought women liked having longer hair then guys) especially Ritsu (who's growing out thier hair again) & they all throw her a big party (Haru & Rin are there for the party bit just not the hair removal bit because it brought up some bad memories) where Kakeru films it & posts it (with Machi's permission) & they give her cut off hair to a charity chosen by all thier followers (despite her disbelief Machi has manged to gain a small group of loyal fans from all her art stuff & her apprences on her loved ones social media), Kakeru also later uploads a video where they help Machi rainbow dye her buzz cut, (she later explores many diffrent types of buzz cut patterns such as flowers & geometric shapes but, at Kimi's insistence, gets them done by a professional)
11. She recycles & D.Y.I's like crazy (Momiji started singing Do Re Mi from The Sound Of Music after she told him that her new dress was actually made from curtains & Yuki cried when she gave him a little rat plushie made from felt, after he came clean to her about the curse)
12. She almost never wears an apron while working on her art because she likes getting messy
13. When her & Yuki go out to eat she loves things like fondoe (both the chocolate & cheese kind), eat N mess & is genreually just a fan of finger food & it becomes a tradition between her & Yuki (& later Mutsuki) to go on a stroll through the park after thier meal & (if it's autumn) look for piles of leaves to jump in (Machi & Yuki also like playing a game where they try to look for the weirdest looking leaf to give eachother & whoever wins gets to pick what they'll eat for dinner that evening & the looser has to cook it, Mutsuki is the "impartial" judge)
14. Machi is amazing at scrapbooking & collarge making (Tohru is more of a dream journal kind of girl)
15. When it's Summer her, Yuki & Mutsuki go down to the beach to see who can find the weirdest looking rocks (the less impressive ones often get used in Machi's art work, the coolest ones Mutsuki gets to keep & any that are too perfect get tossed back in the ocean & Mutsuki likes to score the splashes they make on how big/loud they are)
16. She loves helping Yuki out with gardening for lots of reasons (it's therapeutic & she loves seeing Yuki happy) but she can't deny it's also just fun getting muddy
17. Machi, thanks to Kakeru, devolpes a love of paint ball (but instead of using guns they just throw the paint at eachother like in 10 Things I Hate About You because apparently the gun pellets actually hurt) & will bring it up as an activity idea to her loved ones any chanse she gets
18. Decorates as much of her flat (& later her home with Yuki & Mutsuki) with Mogeta merchandise, random things she collects & her own art work as a big fuck you to her bitch "you have 0 personality/hobbies or talents" of a mother
19. Kisa (happily) & Hiro (reluctantly) introduce Machi to the magic of glitter
20. Machi & Rin eventually become proper friends due to bonding over being abounded by their asshole parents & one of the things they like to do together is work on thier seprete art peices while listening to music (Machi dosn't do any of her "aggressive" art, like plate smashing, around Rin though thanks to Yuki & Haru warnings)
21. When stuff gets to be too much & none of thier other coping strategies are working (like watching Mogeta stoned- which Kisa, Tohru & Momiji do not partake in) Machi & Haru bond by going to rage rooms together to destroy shit & scream (Haru obviously dosn't want Rin around for any of that though so Momiji, Tohru, Kagura or Hana will often take the opportunity to hang out with her, one time Yuki offered & it wasn't bad but it was definitely awkward as they had never really hung out without Haru before & Haru teases her for ages afterwards about her ending up liking Yuki once she actually spent some time with him which, like the precious tsundere she is, Rin will forever deny)
22. (I actually made a whole seprete post about this ages ago but now it seems to have vanished so in case other Machi fans are unable to find it l'll add it here) on the days that it's supposed to snow but dosn't Yuki takes her (& later Mutsuki) skating so she can enjoy scratching up the perfectly smooth ice (they would have gone on double dates with Tohru & Kyo if Tohru wasn't freaked out at the idea of having blades on her shoes & Kyo hadn't claimed to "not trust" ice, he's dislike comes from all the times Kagura had forced him to ice skate with her on the lake near Kazuma's place in the winter when they were kids, so they would instead go with Haru & Momiji - they had thought about going with Haru x Rin & Kakeru x Kormaki once but he proudly revealed that he'd been banned from thier local ice rink years ago for trying "perfectly safe" Olympic level stunts in he's attempt to recreate one of he's favriote episodes of Power Rangers, much to he's fiancee's anger, & Machi reminded Yuki that though Haru & Kakeru were fine with eachother Rin isn't reall able to stand Kakeru for longer than 5 minuites)

The Great Ace Attorney Playthrough: The Case of the Unbreakable Speckled Band (Part 3b)
Last Time: After being discovered in Miss Pavlovaās cabin, things didnāt go as badly for us as we thought they would. In fact we got to dance around with Herlock Sholmes the Himbo Detective and discovered that Susato (and presumably someone at Capcom) really knows a lot about snakes, Nikolina has a pet kitten called Darka, and Kazuma apparently died by tripping over said kitten in a tragic accident. However, while it would probably be the best explanation for everyone involved, Iām not entirely sure itās true as it still doesnāt explain the fact the crime scene was clearly tampered with.
Well it seems that, like me, Susatoās not entirely convinced Nikolinaās telling us the truth.
In fact, it looks like sheās sure of it.
You know, I didnāt expect to feel conflicted about finding Kazumaās killer, but I kind of do...
Like, I came into this fully expecting to feel hatred and anger towards whoever did this. I was expecting to confront some hateful villain on a par with Miss Brett or Manfred Von Karma and to take satisfaction and vengeance in taking them down... but this isnāt that. Thereās no conspiracy, no big untouchable threat, thereās just an abused and scared little girl who probably killed Kazuma because she thought he was going to kill her.
I donāt expect to feel good about taking Nikolina down. I think itāll feel like when we had to go for Adrian Andrews... only this time sheās actually guilty.
I donāt have anything to add to Susatoās speech, other than it feels important to put it up, and it seems like a good show of who Susato is as a person.
You know, Iāve had a little difficulty pinning Susato down until now, but I think Iāve finally got her. Susato Mikotoba is a woman who believes in truth and justice, and will go to great lengths to reveal it... even if it hurts far more than the lie ever did.
Herlockās been quiet for a while now, and I donāt think heās still reeling from the snake business. Itās difficult to read his expression with his hat like that, so I canāt tell if heās running through the crime scene in his mind, or if Susatoās words have struck a cord with him.
Wait WHAT?
Ah, ok. Herlock basically been using this whole thing as a distraction, and was planning to give everything over to Scotland Yard once we arrived home so they could deal with any āoutstanding issuesā.
(Also heās handcuffed us again)
It hadnāt quite clicked before, but no oneās actually considered what Ryunosuke must be feeling. His best friend has just been murdered, and all almost everyone has done, has been to accuse him of killing him. Even among Hosonaga, and later Susato, Ryunosuke hasnāt got to really talk about his feelings, and Iām not sure if anyoneās actually given him the opportunity to do so.
With the next stop looming ever closer, I know we donāt exactly have the time to talk right now, but I hope Ryunosuke gets the chance once this is all done.
Ok, letās do this.
Letās run through what we know doesnāt fit so far:
1) The writing in Russian: not only is it in the wrong language but Kazuma died instantly, meaning that thereās next to no way he wrote this himself, and absolutely no way he did it if he died tripping over a kitten.
2) The ships log has been left blank from after 2am, meaning that who ever was probably in on it.
3) Half of Darkaās bell somehow found itās way in Nikolinaās bin, meaning someone must have taken it from the crime scene.
4) If someone went into the cabin (which they must have done) they have to have pressed the emergence alarm after they left.
Letās start with the biggest contradiction shall we? The photographic print.
Oh Nikolina, thatās not the issue here.
Ryunosukeās got it.
Well done Ryunosuke.
Iām trying to work out what this could be. The bell half perhaps? But thatās something that was taken away surely.
Ok, so just something that proves it wasnāt an accident. Well Iām not too sure if itās what Iām supposed to be looking for here, but Iāll present the mark on the floor and see what happens.
Oh thank god!
Well, not exactly Hosonaga, while itās true that the tripped kitten explanation does explain how the bell was broken, it doesnāt explain why half of it made its way out of Kazumaās room and into Nikolinaās bin.
Exactly Ryunosuke!
So, now that weāve successfully proved someone was at the crime scene, letās start working out who could have done it.
(TBH I still think that, while Nikolina killed Kazuma, Stroganoff was the person who tampered with the crime scene. The writing just feels a bit too calculated to be Nikolina, especially if she killed Kazuma out of fear.)
Ah, I was wondering when youād have enough Stroganoff.
Heās basically saying that we already know I (Ryunosuke) was in the room, and that if what Iām saying is true then it has to be me as the door was bolted from the inside.
However, as I (both Ryunosuke and me) have zero knowledge of Russian, itās impossible for me to have written the message. What we do have however, is knowledge as to how the door was bolted from the outside, which we must be getting close to revealing.
Thatās... a really good question actually. Why didnāt they just take the whole thing?
Ah, I see. I was looking at this from the eyes of someone from the modern era of electric lights, rather than with the eyes of someone who lives with jolly old Victorian lighting. The floor wasnāt visible enough to make out half of a cats bell.
Shit... sheās their kid...
You know, while we still donāt know exactly how Nikolina came onboard this ship, Iād kind of assumed that the sailors (or perhaps someone affiliated with them) had found her trying to stow away or hiding down by the docks, and taken pity on her and decided to help her out. Because, I thought, there was no way Nikolina would reach out to strangers for help, given how scared she is. But the answer is that they werenāt strangers. They were family.
Thatās why theyāve all been ready to risk everything without hesitation, even if it means covering up a murder. Sheās their kid, and Iām about to make them watch it all be for nothing.
Yeah, Ryunosuke... it is...
(I love the way these spirits combine together. Nikolina looks even smaller and younger next to Stroganoff, and her hiding behind him while his fighting stance partly shields her does a good job of showing how things are for them right now. It makes me think of images of cornered animals protecting their young.)
Because heās lying, but then I think youāve already figured that out.
My time has come.
Susato, itās ok. Iāve got this, you donāt need to make us look bad by suggesting things you know arenāt true.
DONāT PASS THE BUCK TO ME!!!
(Again, me an Rynosuke operate on the same wavelength now)
OH MY GOD, THE HIMBO DETECTIVE MADE A PROPER DEDICATION ALL ON HIS OWN!!!
HELL YEAH I DO!!!
Look at him go! Heās even using Susatoās fancy words to explain it!
And there goes the bolt on the door!
Now weāre explaining that the emergency stop button can be pressed at various different points around the ship, including, crucially, just outside these two cabins.
Oh Susato, you know as well as I do that this whole things had Herlockās fingerprints all over it.
(Important information, along with not being trusted with a pet, do not trust Herlock Sholmes with any machinery or control panels)
To be honest this is the appropriate reaction. Weāre at sea Herlock! Donāt mess with the thing that stands between us and drowning!
Herlock āBut Did You Dieā Sholmes: Now lets not lose sight of the fact I got us evidence.
And the worst part is that heās right.
Not if you drugged everyone!
I think itās finally time to bring up the blank ships log.
Ok team, Herlockās in charge of our excuses from now on!
Weāre going through the fact that the log was blank, which with Stroganoffās meticulous ritual of writing: Nothing to Report, every half hour on the dot, means that there definitely was something to report.
We sure are suggesting that Susato!
Not if you were drugged Hosonaga!
HE MADE ANOTHER PROPER DEDUCTION!!! IāM SO PROUD!!!
Ok, have the drugs finally worn off on Herlockās brain, because heās saying really smart things now. Or is it just that heās taking things seriously rather than using this whole thing as a distraction?
Susatoās got it too!
So, because itās such a large scale job, it couldnāt have been pulled off by any one person, meaning that the entire crew must have been in on it.
(Poor drugged Hosonaga, they really identified you werenāt one of them the second you set foot on this ship didnāt they?)
Now see, the problem with this strategy, is that while Bif might not be happy about the rest of his crew getting into trouble, I feel like this is a Murder on the Orient Express scenario, in the sense that everyone involved fully acknowledge the risks and came into this prepared to go down if necessary.
Yeah, heās not happy, but heās not cracking.
In fact, Iām not sure anything could cause him to crack. He is the one personās standing between Nikolina and (potentially) death. I canāt see any way heās going to back down.
I understand now, Herlock wasnāt aiming for him. Because theyāre Nikolinaās family too.
It seems to be just like we suspected. Nikolina asked them to help her escape, and so, as one, the crew agreed to help her. They put sleeping drugs in the chicken so no one would notice what was happening, and got one of their comrades on the shore of Shanghai to take her to the ship at midnight.
Hereās the problem we have now though. Now sheās covering for them. Even if Iām wrong about Stroganoff or another member of the crew writing the message, the ships log means that they either knew or found out, and I canāt imagine they would have sat by and done nothing.
Wait a second though. We met Nikolina in her cabin, which means she must have got back inside some way or another. She couldnāt have done that if she was the one who pressed the alarm. I think this could be a way to establish someone must have helped her.
Theyāre still fighting, and to be honest I didnāt expect anything else. Theyāre both protecting each other now and itās going to take nothing but evidence to make them budge.
Iām going to be perfectly honest Herlock, youāve kind of lost me.
In fact I think youāve lost most of the room...
ITS TIME FOR DANCE OF DEDUCTION 3: I WAS HOPPING IāD HAVE UNTIL THE NEXT CASE TO THINK UP A NAME!
Ryunosuke, donāt play dumb. We must dance!
(Or observe, thatās good too)
Right, well weāve worked out Stroganoff was the one who did the fabrication, so we should probably focus on him first.
Got you.
To be honest Iām at a loss as to how he got some of the ink round there. Perhaps he knocked the ink over when he was sorting the crime scene out.
Or perhaps it was on his finger and he accidentally rubbed it over when he held his hands like this?
... I thought so...
:(
So, just after one in the morning, Bif was patrolling the corridor when a scared an pail Nikolina came up to him desperate for help. He followed her to Kazumaās cabin and found him on the floor. Apparently the event before went on like Nikolina said, only instead of luring Darka through the vent, she went next door because she was worried about the sounds sheād heard through the vent.
... heās still shielding her isnāt he?
I think Susato knows it too.
The problem is, that Nikolinaās following Bifās lead. Perhaps if we had the chance to talk to her alone weād know we were getting the truth, but not with Bif there. And to be honest Iām not sure I can really blame either of them for that.
Iām not 100% sure to be honest. And I donāt think I will be until this case is closed.
Iāll take that as not being done then.
I have no idea...
(His fist was closed, could that be the issue?)
(Thank you god of video games!)
OPEN WITH THAT NEXT TIME HERLOCK!
Yeah, weāre not going to be able to guess!
Nikolinaās earring!
Which he couldnāt have had if he was dead when she came in!
(Stroganoffās face seems to suggest that weāve reached the final curtain.)
I donāt think either of them can explain away this.
(Again, lead with the earring next time Herlock)
Things are in the right order now.
He let her in. He thought she was Hosonaga so he let her in.
Itās all going fine right now, but we know how this ends.
Of course he did, just by looking at Nikolina you can see sheās been through a lot, and besides, Kazuma has a secret all of his own.
Here we go. Whatever it might be, the thing that triggered Nikolinaās survival instinct is coming.
Ah shit...
You know, since the moment Darka disappeared through that vent, Iām not sure things were ever going to end differently. Kazuma was always going to open the door, he was always going to help the frightened girl he found there, and being the incredibly quick man that he was, he was always going to recognize her.
And Kazuma was always going to want to look into the situation, and that was always going to tip Nikolina into a panic. And then sooner or later she was going to lash out in what seemed to her to be necessary self defence.
Here it is.
Oh!?
So this wasnāt the trigger. But then what was?
Oh no. He was going to get Ryunosuke from the wardrobe. The wardrobe Nikolina couldnāt possibly grasp the significance of, but that was right next to the bell cord.
(Also didnāt I say the captain was somehow to blame?)
(What do you guys say we chalk it up to him and put this whole business behind us?)
(And yes I do know that Iām stalling again)
... in a panic you struck out... and he stumbled... and hit his head on the way down...
I see, so Darka put him off balance first. And so when you pushed him he he hit his head on the bedpost.
Fear, adrenaline, and a lack of judgment due to stress and trauma. Perhaps if this had happened on any day other than the one where youād just fled things would have been different, but maybe not. Itās hard to tell.
And we know the rest...
Stroganoff cleared away as much of Nikolinaās presence as he could find, and in doing so found Ryunosuke asleep in the wardrobe. It must have seemed like fate was giving him a stranger who could take the fall instead of his kid.
So Nikolina was the one who ācleared awayā the bell. That explain why some of it was left behind, and why it ended up in her bin. Stroganoff would probably have thrown it overboard.
Whatās that?
I see, thatās a good question.
What he said about the inspector...
Oh dear.
Hosonaga, you were literally drugged at the time, and Iām still pretty sure you were set up to fail (which does raise the question of what would have happened to Kazuma if Nikolina hadnāt killed him)
Susato?
I see, sheās realized that he was going for Ryunosuke, thus slotting the final piece of this whole tragedy neatly into place.
(These two cases are really going all out in very different ways. The next one better let me relax and have fun Maskqu de Masque style. Iām not sure I can take much more of this.)
Here it comes, the unnecessariness of the whole murder.
:(
Yeah...
:((
Ryunosukeās best friend has been murdered because of the misunderstandings of a child, and heās been raked over the coals because of that. While it might not be the kindest thing to say for Nikolina, itās an important thing to say for Ryunosuke, and I feel heās justified in saying it.
In fact it would probably be a bad sign if he didnāt say this. Heās as much of a victim in this whole affair as anyone. Iām glad heās at least getting an apology from Nikolina, even though itās unfortunately gone past the point where that would be useful.
Itās finally over, and just as I predicted it doesnāt feel good.
HOSONAGA SATURO YOU HEAL LIKE A CHAMP!
āItās just a scratchā, you said.
āGo to a hospitalā, we cried.
āNo need, just give me a few hours to click my face back into position and pass me back my glasses lenses and Iāll be fineā
Hosonaga, you are unkillable and this is exactly why youāre superiors had to resort to shipping you out.
Ok, enough fun declaring Hosonaga to be our new god. Letās go back to the serious and depressing business of Nikolina.
So, it seems like Nikolina will be handed over to Scotland Yard, and Herlock will sort things out with the immigrations office so she doesnāt have to go back to Russia.
Also the way theyāre talking about her future means that sheās not going to be executed (thank god), which makes sense given that she committed manslaughter rather than murder. Whether or not she goes to prison will probably depend on the judge as, while she has the fact that sheās a white female child, she is also not English and speaks with a strong accent, and therefore, is going to be subjected to a lot of Xenophobia.
Hm?
Ah.
Again, Iām glad Ryunosukeās getting these apologies.
Wait, are you sure Stroganoff? Like yeah, youāre not going to get done for murder, and the whole defending a kid thing willĀ play of pretty well in court (plus the man you accused wasnāt English and has a less white skin tone than you). But you are also a Russian man with a strong accent and you wonāt be able to fall back on being a child or let the evils of sexism and xenophobia fight each other.
Well at least weāre free again, even if weāre in a worst place than when we started.
You know he will Ryunosuke. And given how well he was defending her till now, I think he might just succeed.
But we have to get to England to make Kazumaās dream come true!
Herlock, can you come to us again in our hour of need? I know we have a lot of them but...
:(
:(
(I swear to god this game is shooting for my jugular)
Weāre holding Kazumaās sword, aka, his spirit. Please donāt make me let it go game.
Is it too much to ask for them to hug? I think they both need it.
Hold us Hosonaga.
(Though not me (Eleanor). Instinct tells me we must remain two meters apart so our weirdĀ lungs donāt accidentally take each other out.)
(I cannot be the person who killed Hosonaga)
(And yes I am trying Ā to lighten the mood with my talk of genetic lung conditions because Iām aware itās only going to get sadder)
(Told you)
There was nothing you could have done Hosonaga, and itās become my own private mission now to find a way to prove that to you.
:(((
Game are we going to have to sail to England on Hosonagaās guilt?
Iām aware that youāve got a whole fun game lined up over there, but is this really the only way?
Canāt we just go to Japanfornia instead, track down Amy Fey (if sheās even been born yet) and get Kazuma back on our team?
No... ok...
Exactly!
WHAT! WHY AM I BACK IN HANDCUFFS!??
HERLOCK SHOLMES COME OUT HERE RIGHT NOW, THIS IS ONLY A LITTLE BIT FUNNY!
Heās amusing himself at least...
(You know what, Iāve decided right now that this is a family friendly blog, so no, Iām not going to say what Iām thinking. You canāt make me.)
Also read the room Herlock, the three of us were having a moment!
Nice save.
Ryunosukeās trying to throw himself under the buss and send Susato and Herlock and Hosonaga off to go live out the rest of the game without him.
Sorry Ryunosuke, but youāre the protagonist. We canāt leave without you.
Thatās it! Ryunosuke, youāre naturally good at lawyering! Itās time for you to take up Kazumaās mantle!
Am I chopped liver to you Susato?
Are we doing a studying montage on the ship over?
Yes Ryunosuke!
Training montage Hosonaga!
You can help! Teach me how to be the crime scene thief and not give a damn!
(Actually on second thoughts, maybe you should sit this one out and offer moral support instead)
Said Hosonaga, knowing that I wasnāt.
(*Eye of the tiger starts to play*)
I CAN LEARN ENOUGH TO WING IT HOSONAGA!
HELL YEAH!!!
Oh good, Iād forgotten about Kazumaās morally ambiguities loose end.
(Probably because every character I fancy has one of them and itās no longer anything to write home about.)
Letās do this Susato, me an you all the way!
Hosonaga? You cool too?
Wait, now is not the time to be sensible Hosonaga! Remember when we got Miss Brett? That was against protocol and it meant we got to see her take off via her big hat! (Although we didnāt get justice and it ended with you being shipped out, but letās not dwell on that.)
Hosonaga normally (while shovelling three tables worth of crockery into his bag): Nothing will get in my way! Iāll lay my life on the line if I have to! I will strait up ignore the rules if I think they are unjust!
Hosonaga when Herlock is present: I have never broken a rule in my life, nor would I ever do so. I am the most sensible and down to earth man you will ever meet, please ignore the way I am dressed right now.
What happened Hosonaga, did you watch me and Herlock doing our dance of deduction and immediately decided someone had to be the adult and it might as well be you?
Or... did watching Herlock roll around on the floor and cling like a limpet to the walls make you wonder that this is how you come across?
Because to be honest you were loudly declaring yourself the Crime Scene Thief just last trial... so I donāt think youāll ever be able to create too much contrast in our eyes.
Come on Crime Scene Thief!
Herlockās aiming right for Hosonagaās canonically shit schooling with those words.
Remember who you are Hosnaga! Youāre the badass who lay his life on the line for us!
(I like how much Herlockās talking Ryunoskue up, I guess this makes up for the fact he handcuffed us again for the asthenic)
Hooray!!! Hosonagaās taking us to Disneyland England!
āHello, this is Saturo Hosanaga. Just calling to say that Iāve done it again... yes I understand that my breaking the rules makes you sad, but I simply will not stop... well you see, theyāre unfair and heavily biased in your favour. Also we both know if you could have stopped me you would have done so long ago. Goodbye.ā
Capcom! Stop trying to make me get to England off of Hosonagaās guilt!
Allow me to come with you, or at the very least please borrow the KBS (Kazumaās big sword) for protection.
Goodbye Hosonaga... until we meet again...
But (and I need to make this very clear Capcom gods) not my mentor!
The KBS!
We will guard this with our lives!
(Karuma huh? That name sounds faintly familiar.)
(Ok Google, now play Eye Of The Tiger)
WE ARNāT DOING THIS AGAIN CAPCOM! PUT THOSE DEATH FLAGS DOWN!
Oh thank god, she just wants to be even!
Ryunosuke, are you sure youāre even able to do that?
You heard the lady Ryunosuke. (And no this totally isnāt because I want to see if youāre even able to do it.)
Booo
Herlock, I love you, but...
KICK HIS ASS SUSATO!!!
WHY ME!!!
Poor sweet Ryunosuke...
Ah, I see itās time to be sad again.
Oh Kazuma, what were you up to?
Anyways, thatās it for The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band. Join me next time for The Adventure of the Runaway Room!

elyvorgās Great Ace Attorney Liveblog - Case 2-5 Part 1
This is a transcript of a liveblog that I originally did on Discord, having played a fan translation of the first game years ago and knowing a spoiler for the second game. I do not recommend following along with this on your first playthrough!
[[Please also bear in mind that Iāve long since finished the game by now, so if past-me wildly misinterprets something here (and I often did), no need to correct me, I already know!]]
Live reactions: 2-5, beginning
elyvorg
anyway, with that giant textwall [[see the previous liveblog post]] posted, I'm finally going to continue! SO stoked to watch Ryunosuke accidentally stumble his way into implicating Kazuma in the murder, this is gonna be GREAT
ooooooh different antechamber music!
Susato seems distracted, has she noticed what I've noticed
oh wait right her dad thing
van Zieks needs hugs (that he would never accept)
Bench
Indeed he does.
elyvorg
they're really insisting this day is the final trial; do I really not get to defend Kazuma? :(
OH look who's the judge huh
yeah that's not gonna bias this trial or anything
Bench
>:3
elyvorg
oh this is SO corrupt, why is this even happening
all the audience members are Stronghart's minions
Bench
Good luck!
elyvorg
sudden turnaround in thinking: does Kazuma know that Stronghart and co are actually the people he should be going after, and he only pretended to go after van Zieks to get things this far?
Stronghart, dude, you're really speaking more like a prosecutor than a judge here, you're not supposed to join in with the opening statement.
hey, Kazuma, bro, I also updated that autopsy report, you don't get to claim full credit for doing that
THIS JUDGE IS SO FUCKING CORRUPT, STOP GIVING YOUR OPINIONS
seatherny
YOOO i just checked this server first time in forever and am loving the ace attorney love and reactions, hope you don't mind if i pop in to see your reactions to my newfound favorite games in the series
elyvorg
(hello? I see someone new typing here, hi welcome I hope you've already played the game yourself, please don't spoil and have fun seeing me react to the rest of it!)
seatherny
i have! i wouldn't dream of spoiling anything, enjoy!
elyvorg
<3
Bench
Welcome!
elyvorg
oh wow you even have a van Zieks pfp, you really mean it about liking this game heh
seatherny
lol yesss
he needs all the hugs and love
kazuma too
elyvorg
this is very true.
haha, Stronghart acted like it was totally Kazuma's idea to hide this confidential information, and then Kazuma was like "nah it's fine to reveal it actually". Wonder whose idea it really was
awww Gina's so proud that she can read!
Gregson was not there at that club, because he was actually with Kazuma, and Kazuma was somewhere outside of London that day!!!!
seatherny
breaks my heart that gregson and gina never got to live their best detective lives together in france
elyvorg
I am... legit stumped on Gina's first testimony, I don't see anything here I can actually object to, could I get a little hint? (I have revealed the name "The Grouse".)
Bench
Maybe you should re-examine your evidence, one by one.
elyvorg
as in, turn it over in 3D and look at it examine?
Bench
Yeah.
elyvorg
Hmm! Thanks.
I do already have the passport, though, and that didn't work on the Grouse statement.
(Like, Gina doesn't actually have a statement saying Gregson was there, is my thing.)
seatherny
my go-to after re-examining the evidence is to press all the statements a second time
elyvorg
I have pressed everything a second time!
seatherny
dang okay let me press my memory a bit more D:
Bench
I'll say this: It's within the first page and a half of evidence.
seatherny
OH
elyvorg
OHHHHHHH thank you, I found it
seatherny
yes it took me forever to find this too
elyvorg
damn I totally forgot that name had already come up
Bench
Same here. Took me quite a while.
seatherny
there was another one in this case that drove me nuts (won't spoil but am happy to try to help if you also get stuck lol)
elyvorg
glad to have help, that would have frustrated me for AGES
heheee, Kazuma's using our help to get the prosecutor's office to stop covering shit up
he is working against Stronghart as much as he can! look at him gooo
i just... wild paranoid galaxy-braining here, but was Kazuma supposed to be the Reaper's new assassin????
you know, if the crime scene really was on the steamship, it does seem like today couldn't possibly be the final trial, surely they've gotta investigate there, right?
OHHHHH HE WAS GONNA MURDER JIGOKU
that's... not even a Reaper job, that's just a straight-up international assassination, yikes
Bench
>:3
elyvorg
so, if Kazuma was there (which I still maintain he totally was), did he try and protect Jigoku?
van Zieks just casually gonna LEG on the witness stand, love it
"But you're in danger of becoming a far more sinister Reaper yourself..." YESSSS BECOMING THE MONSTERS YOU HATE
(Kazuma please don't do that)
yes totally, the most impartial court right now
were the people on the List not assassination targets, but assassins...?
(still trying to make sense of that goddamn Secret List)
OHHHHHH Kazuma just let on that he knew about the trunk when he shouldn't, right??? >:3
aaaaaaa Ryunosuke's gonna start doubting his friend!!!
"Asa Shinn... the assassin."
*Gina gasps*
yes Gina, such shock :o
but Ryunosuke, you know it couldn't have been Shinn he brought with him, don't you? >:3
KAZUMA WAS ORDERED TO ASSASSINATE JIGOKU I'M SO SURE OF IT OH MAN
can't believe my latest textwall of thoughts has been debunked again
i wonder if it was a question mark there because the entry was written before Kazuma regained his memories, so Gregson didn't know his name
Bench
>:3
elyvorg
oh, man, Stronghart mentored Jigoku, hmmmm that's juicy
there's no way Kazuma actually believes van Zieks was trying to Reaper Jigoku, given that he was the actual fucking assassin
is the Reaper really just one big excuse to assassinate people inconvenient for the British empire, and blame it all on van Zieks?
can't believe I'm circling back around to what if Kazuma actually was faking the amnesia after all, because if he's meant to be like a new Reaper recruit or something like that, surely they'd have brought him here, rather than him randomly showing up of his own accord
oh no Gina ;;
NO DON'T YOU DARE FIRE GINA, she is gonna be the BEST detective, just give her time
NOOOO HER TRUST ISSUES
oh MAN Ryunosuke hasn't let go of that suspicious thing Kazuma said, aaaaaaaaaaa
NNNNNNNNNNGH I WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE BLADE TIP IT'S KARUMA
wow he's just ADMITTING to being the assassin right here
he's still insisting van Zieks did it???
he's gotta still be hiding a bunch about what went down on the boat
(you know like why he slashed Gregson's trunk)
oh shit, IS Jigoku dead? D:
Kazuma, come on, there's a million reasons someone would want to kill the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs that isn't just the Reaper
well, this has taken a Turn now that I'm suddenly on the ship. Gonna take a break here for a bit.
(please tell me I'm going to find something that super incriminates Kazuma, I want to get to defend him, dammit)
Interim thoughts/chatting
elyvorg
surely if Jigoku does show up dead, we're going to have to hold another trial for that, right? so this isn't actually the final trial?
I'm also thinking. Whoever the hell killed Gregson (and it wasn't Kazuma because I believe in him), surely there's a significant chance that Kazuma was at least the one who brought his body back and used it to frame van Zieks? (on Stronghart's orders though probably?) which is not murder but also a pretty bad crime. Aaaaaa I don't know
also at this point I suppose I should bring up that it's looking extremely likely that Stronghart is the real leader of the Reaper, obviously, dude is so blatantly corrupt
seatherny
interested to hear what you think of how kazuma is handled by the end
elyvorg
I am expecting to be thrilled by whatever it is, given that you can, uh, probably tell he was already my favourite ages ago.
seatherny
yep! Haha
i donāt blame ya
elyvorg
(have you actually read through my backlog of ridiculously long ramblings oh my god)
seatherny
Lol a little to see where you were in the game when i saw the thread but not all
elyvorg
oh haha, you probably haven't seen my Wild Plausibly-Deniable Spoiler Rollercoaster that I went on yet, then! As in, I was spoiled for Kazuma's survival, but only sort of, in an ambiguous way that could have been interpreted to mean something else, and it resulted in a really Interesting experience of the game up to case 2-3.
seatherny
nope! i spoiled myself on his return because 1-2 felt way too unsatisfactorily Weird but all I knew was āyeah heās coming backā - all the other facts were super fun to witness as the games went on
elyvorg
I started this thread when I was halfway through case 2, but I'd already played a fan-translation of GAA1 a few years ago so all of the GAA1 stuff was essentially me replaying it with an extremely fuzzy memory of everything except for the broad strokes. The beginning of the thread is quite far back, although I'm pretty sure my density of Things To Say has increased dramatically since 2-3 (hmmm I wonder why), so it might not be as far back as you'd think.
When I played GAA1 for the first time, I totally bought Kazuma's death! Felt very Mia-esque to me. The super awesome idolised mentor character needs to die for the protagonist to get a chance to step into the spotlight, right?
And it still kinda works that way, narratively, because now that Kazuma's back, he is decidedly playing a very different role from the mentor figure. Having him come back only to... continue to be a mentor, would have felt unnecessary.
seatherny
about to leave for appointments but Iāll look after
and I agree, I bought it in that it was an obvious parallel to Mia but the method of death feltā¦ contrivedā¦ and his body was moved so quickly and Sholmes is kinda sus and a lot of other things set off red flags! So I got the strong suspicion there was more to it. I think the return worked with the prosecutor role and I thought the character development with Ryunosuke - feeling like an undeserving replacement but diving into the role headfirst anyway - was great.
elyvorg
Maybe I was just so sold by the heartbreaking tragedy of what Nikolina did and Kazuma was trying to help her not turn her in oh god that I didn't even want to question anything else. But good on you for noticing the fishy bits before you had any outside spoiler information!
seatherny
Yeah, I avoided the fan translations and any official/fandom content until the localization pretty well, in case of spoilers. So much so that I didnāt know Resolve was released at the same time until I finished GAA1
elyvorg
bwahaha, that must have been a relief, seeing everything frustratingly end halfway through only to realise that you get to play the second half immediately.
seatherny
yeah my fiancĆ© enjoyed the angry āoh hell no they really just ended game 1 hereā texts followed by the ones with all the excited screaming : ā )
elyvorg
meanwhile on my end "oh hell no they really just ended game 1 here. i'm not gonna get to see the second half for like. years. welp."
(and naturally by the time this came around I'd forgotten most of the details of game 1 and so had to play it again anyway)
seatherny
the rollercoaster you were referring to was Kazuma's amnesia, right??? i have Thoughts but cannot fully articulate them until you finish the game i think!
tis hard not to actually answer your questions btw :D
elyvorg
nah, the amnesia is a more recent thing, the rollercoaster was about is he actually still alive or not oh god please let him be alive because the spoiler I'd had about that was ambiguous and might have meant something else!
also yes please keep any amnesia thoughts until I've finished the game and can have an absolute 100% definitely correct understanding of what's going on
and yes, all questions should be assumed to be rhetorical unless I very specifically state otherwise! ;P
seatherny
gotcha! this is me then: :x
Interim thoughts: assassins
elyvorg
It's interesting how this trial went in the direction of proving that Kazuma was there with Gregson like I thought it would, but while I was expecting things would erupt into utter emotionally-painful chaos from that point, actually all that happened was Kazuma went, "Yeah. I was there. I was the assassin. So what?"
I also can't help but think that if the regular judge had been here, he would have been all, "I'm SORRY, Prosecutor Asogi, you were the fucking WHAT?!?!" and not let it slide. But instead Stronghart's just here like, yeah, the leading prosecutor just admitted to being ordered to assassinate somebody, anyway, no big, moving on. I wonder who actually gave the assassination order.
I wonder if what's going to happen is that, though Stronghart seems quite happy to turn a blind eye to everything seemingly suspicious about Kazuma right now because they're supposedly working together, at some point Kazuma's going to step just a little too far out of line with his double-agentry and cause Stronghart to retaliate with "you know what? Fuck you, you did it." Putting Kazuma in a position where there's a bunch of super suspicious things around his actions does give him that leverage.
HEY I JUST REALISED ANOTHER THING. The List of Names is a thing, sure, something something Reaper assassins something probably. But also, it was in Japanese morse code, meaning it was a secret message sent to Japan (or from Japan). Someone else other than presumably Stronghart must be in possession of whatever knowledge was in that message, someone in Japan. So... is Jigoku also corrupt, or...?
elyvorg
Not actually continuing yet, got some other stuff to do first, but some more interim thoughts. I'm thinking about who must have actually killed Gregson, and there's literally only three relevant suspects who were on the ship at the time: Kazuma, Mikotoba, and Jigoku. It's not Kazuma because I believe in him, and it's almost certainly not Mikotoba because he's freaking John Watson and we're literally playing as him in this section I just started so I doubt he could hide it if he actually knew about what went down here. So... Jigoku did it, I guess? It's also notable how, in the hotel when they arrived, Mikotoba and Jigoku both expressed surprise that Kazuma was alive when we told them. Except, Jigoku would have almost certainly seen Kazuma during the incident, and he just... decided not to mention it. So that's pretty fishy.
Soooo it's sounding a lot like Jigoku's definitely going to show up dead soon. I was also thinking about Klint's autopsy report and how he was killed with a sword, how about that. So, prediction, for maximum parallels, Jigoku's also gonna have been killed with a sword and it's gonna look like Kazuma did it please I just want to defend Kazuma okay

Hi! I happened to stumble across your analyses on both Majima and Saejima and boy am I blown away by them! You captured their personalities so well itās awespiring. Is there a chance youāll write a post about Kiryu as well? Itās just that originally Iāve had a hard time liking him as a character because of the numerous mistakes he has made across the series (and the fact that others donāt really address them for some reason). Despite that Iām a huge fan of kazumaji and thatās why I feel conflicted sometimes. Anyway, I would really like to hear your thoughts about it!
Awww, youāre very kind ^^; Thanks for asking for more c: So, the reason why I havenāt yet made a post about Kiryu is NOT due to my lack of feelings about him, itās quite the opposite. I have essays worth of feelings about Kiryu and just... have not found the time to really give those feelings credit ^^; But, since you ask and youāre having a hard time with his character, let me at least start.Ā
As a preamble, let me first say that thereās a difference between a character making a mistake and the writing making a mistake. This is not to say Kiryu never makes mistakes, far from it. I have a lot of feelings about Kiryuās mistakes, theyāre one of the reasons I love him, but a lot of the more egregious fuck ups are the writers making weak or poorly thought out choices. For example, like you point out, Kiryu makes mistakes and no one ever calls him out for it... thatās a writing flaw, not a problem with Kiryu.Ā
(Please note that to give my best reading of Kiryu, Iām going to reference as many games as I have seen, which is through game 6. If you do not wish to be spoiled through at least game 5 (I never reference game 6 if I can help it), do not read further.)
Continuing with that example... I cannot tell you how simultaneously OVERJOYED and FURIOUS I am about game 3 when Mine, MINE YOSHITAKA, a character who was introduced that gameĀ and then never appears again, is the only person who criticizes Kiryuās decisions when he has DEMONSTRABLY made bad ones! Like, Mineās criticisms are ENTIRELY valid, but because they come out of hisĀ mouth itās hard to say if the audience is meant to sympathize or not. Especially since Mine is sort of the antagonist of that game and heās not really pitched as a sympathetic character. You have to really be willing to be critical of Kiryu to hear what Mineās saying there and agree with him. The way the scene is played, youāre sort of supposed to still identify with Kiryu and insist that heās never done anything wrong ever, even though heās put all of his friends in a vulnerable position and IS arguably to blame for the state Daigoās in now, as Mine points out.Ā
And the writing is on some level aware that it is Kiryuās fault or they wouldnāt have brought it up. They wouldnāt have had Mine say that if they didnāt see that problem. But the problem is theyāre afraid of letting Kiryu be flawed. Theyāre afraid that if Kiryuās wrong, even once, he wonāt be The Good Guy anymore and the audience wonāt like him anymore. This is weak and cowardly writing. Characters arenāt compelling because theyāre never wrong, characters are compelling from what they do whenĀ theyāre wrong. Any character whoās never wrong is unrealistic and, ultimately, boring. We all fuck up, weāre all only human. You ultimately will not identify with an infallible god because they would make choices you wouldnāt. Iām sure we can all think of characters who were pitched to us as infallible that, sooner or later, we ended up hating because of this very trait. So trying to pitch Kiryu as infallible is a ginormous mistake. But an understandable one, especially in a franchise that depends on the likability of its main character. But this means that they donāt trust their own writing, they donāt trust Kiryuās inherent appeal and they fuck up the story around refusing to take risks. Itās one of the most heartbreaking writing decisions for me that those words come out of Mineās mouth and not one of Kiryuās friends.Ā
Because itās Kiryuās friendsĀ who deserve to get to say that. Itās Kiryuās friends, the people who are directly affected by his actions and the people who CARE about Kiryu, who have the right to criticize him. Not some fucking young blood with a chip on his shoulder. Having Mine say it makes the criticism look biased an illegitimate when it isnāt. I understand the writing impulse to not let us criticize Kiryu, but think how much more compelling it would be to show that Kiryuās relationships areĀ strong enough to handle criticism. That the trust and love is there for a friendĀ to come to Kiryu with this and to force Kiryu to confront himself and listen rather than ignore the problems and insist that heās never done anything wrong. But to make that call, to let us doubt Kiryu, you, as the writer, have to trust your story, you have to trust your character, and, worst of all, you have to trust your audience. Many many writers of popular media do not trust their audiences. They donāt trust that if they let you doubt, youāll come with them and see where the story leads. Theyāre afraid youāll lose interest and turn away. Many writers feel that they cannot take the risk of trusting their writing for fear of losing their base and therefore their income.
And, again, part of the issue is the aims of the story. At the end of the day, RGG is here to produce a fighting video game, thatās it. Wrapping that up in a compelling story makes it more sellable, but their primary focus isnāt the story itself. Itās getting you to buy a fighting video game. If the mechanics arenāt up to par, if they fights arenāt cool and interesting, the rest doesnāt matter. RGG came up with a story to link the games together and invested in making an interesting protag, but it was to sell the games. If the point of this story was the story, I think weād be seeing different writing decisions and maybe some of these flaws could have been avoided. And I donātĀ actually mean to point this out as a criticism and say why arenāt they creating art for artās sake? I mean it really as a grain of salt that I personally use to try not to hold the writing here up to the standard that I would a novel or something. That may not be useful perspective for anyone else, but itās a thing I like to keep in mind.Ā
So, part of what we see in Kiryu is that the writing fucking sucks. And itās fair not to want to redeem Kiryuās character or dig deeper into him when the writing hasnāt provided you with much. So no one feel bad if youāre not persuaded by my assessment, Iām not here to shame or convince anyone, Iām just offering my two cents.Ā
And now alllllĀ of that said... Letās talk about my boy, Kiryu Kazuma.Ā
I said earlier that characters are compelling based on how they react to mistakes, how they deal with them. Let me tell you, Kiryu is awareĀ that heās made mistakes. And he has regrets.Ā
What I find compelling about Kiryu is that he triesĀ so fucking hard to do the right thing, all the fucking time. What I find compelling about Kiryu is that he wants so much to make people happy, to make people proud of him. He is scared all the time of doing wrong by people and making himself untrustworthy, making himself scary. He has lost so much, he has lost everythingĀ and he still gets up every goddamn day and tries.Ā
Does he fuck up? YES. ABSOLUTELY. ALL THE FUCKING TIME. But he gets up. Every. Fucking. Day. And tries. And you canāt buy that. You canāt ask for that. Thatās just who he is, a guy who tries.Ā
I donāt... have time to explain the depths of my love for Kiryu, but letās take my favorite Kiryu, what I think the best characterization of Kiryu is in the entire fucking series: game 5. Game 5 Kiryu is my favorite fucking Kiryu, including 1, including Zero, bar fucking none. I fucking loveĀ game 5 Kiryu.Ā
And Game 5 begins with a colossalĀ mistake.Ā
Before the game starts, Kiryu is convinced, either earnestly or nefariously, to leave his little family and specifically abandon AHEM release his daughter Haruka to someone else. This is the stupidest fucking thing Kiryuās done since giving up the chairmanship. But he does it because he is told that he is a greater threat to his family WITH them than abandoning them. I want you to think about that. Kiryu loves his family so muchĀ he would sooner leave them than do them harm. I need to remind you that Kiryu has already destroyed and rebuilt his own life once already. He has repeatedly given up everything for his dream of having a family and for all his beautiful kids more than once. And he just loves his little Okinawa home so much, he canāt stand the idea that he would bring it harm, so he fucks off. This is categorically the wrong decision and any other reasonable adult would know this. Iām sure you yourself understand intuitively why a parent, no matter how dubious, canāt just leave a brood of underage children to fend for themselves in the world.
But hereās the thing: Kiryuās made a number of dumbass decisions that have led him to this point in his life. He doesnāt have any adult, peer friends to counsel him about this. Heās deliberately estranged himself from Majima, from Date, from all the people who could have helped him out here and told him not to. And deep down Kiryuās alwaysĀ been worried that he was unworthy of this. Heās always been afraid that he didnāt really deserve to be happy, deserve his little family of innocents. And the plot SURE AS FUCK has confirmed that for him, repeatedly putting the kids in danger and reminding him that you can never actually leaveĀ the yakuza. Kiryu knows heās fucked up. He knows adopting his family was a mistake, but it was too late, what was he gonna do now? But here comes this little insidious voice confirming his worst fears, telling him he needs to go, and Kiryu listens. He has no one else to listen to and heās been so beaten down by the plot by this point, heās lost so fucking much now, that he doesnāt have the strength to believe in himself anymore. So he goes. BelievingĀ that he is doing the right thing.
And then, as it always does, the plot comes for him, telling Kiryu he needs to come help, telling Kiryu only he can fix it. And Kiryu, for the first time in his life, puts his foot down. Heās so fucking tired, he wonāt fucking do it, not one more time. Because every time he gets his ass up to help, what happens? Someone else dies. Someone else dies and itās Kiryuās fault all over again, and itās Nishiki all over again, and Kiryu can barely fucking live with himself for all the guilt that he feels. He starts to help and he just loses. Every fucking time. So this time, no, this time he wonāt do it. He canāt do it anymore. He just wants... everyone to be okay. And heās so sure that everyone would be better off without him.Ā
If thatās a huge screaming red flag for anyone else IT SHOULD BE. Kiryu is in a depression spiral. Heās suicidal. Heās cut himself off from all his meaningful relationships, heās not participating in his favorite hobbies, heās alone and isolated in a new city where he doesnāt know anyone. Heās Not Doing Good. Game 5 is about finally, FINALLY confronting Kiryuās demons, all the pent up unresolved guilt and turmoil that we never fucking addressed for 5 games running. (And if youāre hearing Bitter Resentment in the way the games have handled Kiryuās emotional reactions OH BOY YOU BETCHA but thatās for another post.)
So Kiryu finally says no. He wonāt fucking do it. But the plot comes for the fucking carotid. Itās Majima. Itās Majima. The only person Kiryu really, truly trusts. The person Kiryu was relyingĀ on to still be there, to be strong, to do the things Kiryu couldnāt. Itās Majima this time. And Kiryu loses his goddamn mind. That was the one thingĀ you had left to take from him, his belief in Majima, and you took it. Kiryu nearly has a psychotic break at the news and decides, fine. Fine. Iāll go fix this, and then I can die. Then itās over. Because there aināt nothing left for him now.Ā
And he does. Kiryu gets his ass down there, he solves the fucking problem, and then he does his level best to die there. Because itās what he feels he deserves. Heās let down everyone. All those losses, all those people... theyāre his fault. If he was really the hero, he could have saved them. If he was really a good person, these tragedies wouldnāt keep happening. It must be his fault. Fuck, even Majima died, even Majima... and he wasnāt even there, he couldnāt even have helped him, he just... He abandoned him. And Kiryu feels intensely that guilt and grief for his mistakes and his missed opportunities. And all he can think to do with that feeling... is die. Itās what Nishiki did before him. Itās what Kazama did before that. Thatās what you do when youāve fucked up and you donāt know how to fix it. You die. Then no one has to deal with you anymore.
But Haruka. His daughter. The best thing he ever did. Sheās up there on stage and she loves him. She still loves him and wants him to be her dad. Sheās been with him the whole time, she knows all about it. And sheās not scared. And she doesnāt think heās bad. Maybe... maybe he can stay alive then. Maybe itās okay if Haruka is still his daughter. And against all belief, he finds his way back to Haruka. He stays alive for her. He wonāt repeat the mistakes of the past. And maybe... he can learn to do something different this time.
Kiryu... makes mistakes all the time. But he knows. And he feels soĀ guilty. The writing doesnāt always do a great job of showing it. We donāt process Nishiki the way we should. We kill Rikiya for no reason. We forget that game 3 should have been TRIGGERING AS SHIT. And we awkwardly no homo out of Kiryuās most important relationship while still insisting that it is Kiryuās most important relationship. The writing is spotty and flawed and sometimes you can barely piece together a coherent narrative out of it.Ā
But at its white burning core is a guy who just keeps trying. Who gets up the next day and tries again. BecauseĀ heās lost so much. Because he lovesĀ so much. Because he believes there is value in being nice to people and being a good person. And I love that.

Ainz sat down at a table the Pleiades had set up for him, big enough for the denizens of the Great Tomb of Nazarick to sit at. He was at the head of the table while his Floor Guardians took both sides of the table while the Pleiades stood to the side.
(Sebas)Ā āLord Ainz, everyone is now here. Shall we begin the emergency meeting?ā
(Ainz)Ā āYes. Now, let us discuss the information we have gathered thus far on Fodlan.
(Albedo)Ā āThen I will begin my findings first.ā
She cleared her throat as her wings flapped gently.
(Albedo)Ā āIn terms of the people and technology, they appear to be slightly behind the world we were at before. While their number of magic casters appear to be higher, the levels of spells and power they wield seem to be lower than expected. This information was all gathered at the Monastery.ā
(Cocytus)Ā āAFTER CLOSELY STUDYING THE KNIGHTS OF SEIROS, THEIR RELICS AND FIGHTING CAPABILITIES APPEAR TO BE ON PAR WITH THOSE OF OUR OLD WORLD. THE RELIC WEAPONS ARE NOT TO BE UNDERESTIMATED, BUT I AM UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE A THREAT TO US IN PARTICULAR. HOWEVER, THE LOW LEVEL MOBS AND UNDEAD WE SPAWNED NEAR THE MONASTERY TO SEE HOW POWERFUL THEY ARE, THE KNIGHTS OF SEIROS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TAKE THEM DOWN EASILY. THIS INFORMATION WAS GATHERED AT THE MONASTERY.ā
(Demiurge)Ā āThe politics of this world appear to be a bit more stable, with the Church of Seiros leading everyone. The Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and the Leicester Alliance appear to be pleased with the Church, but something about Edelgardās actions and words seem to say otherwise. At least regarding the Adrestian Empire. I will need more time to fully assess her intentions, along with Rhea. This information was gathered at the Monastery as well.ā
Ainz took a moment to process all the information given to him. Truth be told, he could not care less about the politics of this world. It wasnāt the one the tomb was in, so he just wanted to return as quickly as possible.
The issue that bothered him the most was the unknown power difference in Fodlan.
In his world, he was practically a god to everyone, and most of his followers couldnāt even be harmed by their most powerful weapons. He and the others of Nazarick were mostly level 100, while the strongest in that world appeared to be around 40-50.
Now, he had no idea if he was underpowered or not.
Ainz looked at his own hands and then back to the Floor Guardians.Ā
(Ainz)Ā āAura, Mare, do you feel any limitations in your spellcasting?ā
They were quiet for a moment before they nodded.
(Aura)Ā āY-Yes actually, Lord Ainz. Something hasnāt been feeling right ever since we got here, and I think thatās the issue!ā
Everyone turned to the twins with wide eyes.
[āWhatās wrong, Lord Momonga?ā - Overlord]
(Mare)Ā āU-U-Um...I donāt feel like Iāve completely been stripped of power but...something IS missing.ā
Everyone else in the room started to examine themselves and realized that some of their abilities did feel dampened.
This made Ainz even more tense, though his skeletal face didnāt show it.Ā
He had no idea what they would be up against in this world, and from the looks of what assignments House Isekai was assigned, this world wouldnāt stay peaceful for long.
The fact people like Class VII with their advanced guns and technology struggled against some of the people here, and Persona users were having trouble with what should be inferior foes was almost enough to make him shudder.
He had no doubt that his group were in the upper tier of power in the House, there would be no telling what kind of curveballs could be thrown at them, especially since he didnāt know how magic worked in this world.
In his world, it worked like an MMO. Now, it was a complete unknown.Ā
Ainz couldnāt afford to be careless here.
(Ainz)Ā āIt appears we need to gather information from beyond the Monastery in order to fully understand the situation weāre in. I want everyone to take no chances. Thereās no telling if Fodlan possesses enemies more dangerous than our old ones. From what I can gather, we have been limited in our skills and spells. Not completely gone, but that must mean precautions must be taken more than ever.ā
Ainz stood up from the table.
(Ainz)Ā āI want everyone to be travelling in pairs when gathering information. You are not to be permitted to travel outside the Monastery unless you have my blessings. Narberal Gamma!ā
(Naberal)Ā āMy lord.ā
(Ainz)Ā āPrepare your adventurer gear and be ready to leave with me.ā
(Albedo)Ā āLord Ainz, are you-ā
(Ainz)Ā āI intend to go as Momon in this world, yes.ā
(Sebas)Ā āMy lord, with all due respect, it would be much better to send the Pleiades out in reconnaissance. The risk of going out is terribly great-ā
(Ainz)Ā āThat is precisely why I am going out myself. I need to understand firsthand how this world works, otherwise we may commit a grave error in the long run. We have no idea how long we will be here, and when we will return. I understand and appreciate your concern, Sebas. That goes for the rest of you.ā
Ainz was about to announce the meetingās end before noticing Yuriās expression.
The other Pleiades noticed it too, and Lupisregina tapped her on the shoulder.
(Lupisregina)Ā āSis?ā
(Yuri)Ā ā...ā
Yuri quietly motioned towards the door with her head.Ā
Everyone understood immediately. There was someone listening in.
They drew out their weapons and prepared their magic silently as CZ2128 and Narberal quickly headed to the side of the walls.
CZ pulled out an assault rifle while Narberal pulled out a staff.
The two battle maids looked at Ainz for the signal.
(Ainz)Ā āVery well, this meeting is adjourned.ā
Narberal kicked the door down as CZ aimed her rifle down at the hallway, finger on the trigger
āAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!ā

(CZ)Ā āIdentify yourselves or die in the name of Ainz Ooal-ā
(Aqua)Ā āAQUAAAAA!ā
(Kazuma)Ā āKAZUMA! KAZUMA! ITāS KAZUMA, DONāT FUCKING SHOOT!ā
[My Dear Personage - Overlord]
Everyoneās faced turned from tense to completely disappointed and annoyed.
(Shalltear)Ā āWhat are those idiots doing down here?!ā
Ainz walked out to meet them.
(Ainz)Ā āExplain yourselves, now.ā
(Kazuma)Ā āW-WE WERE JUST WONDERING WHY YOU ALL WERE DOWN HERE!ā
(Aqua)Ā āY-YEAH! ALL OF US SAW YOU GOING DOWN SO WE WERE CURIOUS! IT WAS EVERYONE ELSEāS IDEA TOO!ā
(Ainz)Ā ā...Everyone else?ā
Minako, Minato, Yu, Akira, Doomguy, Rean, and Megumi popped their heads around the corner.
(Yu)Ā āUh...hi.ā
(Akira)Ā āI mean, Iām a Phantom Thief. Eavesdroppingās my thing.ā
(Minako)Ā āIām just nosy.ā
(Minato)Ā āS-Sorry.ā
(Rean)Ā āWe were just concerned is all! Well, at least me and Megunee were.ā
(Megumi)Ā āH-Hi, Ainz...!ā
Doomguy shrugged.
HOW DID WE NOT NOTICE ANY OF THEM?!
(Narberal)Ā āYou insects DARE TO EAVESDROP ON LORD AINZ?! I WILL CUT YOU DOWN WHERE YOU STAND IF LORD AINZ PERMI-ā
(Ainz)Ā āH-HEY HEY HEY! CALM DOWN!ā
Ainz frantically waved his hands to calm her down, and which he turned back to Kazuma.
(Ainz)Ā āAND WHAT THE HELL KAZUMA?! WHYāD YOU-ā
Before Ainz could panic any further, he felt his emotions suddenly calm down as a blue glow emitted around him.
(Ainz)Ā ā...ahem...It was only House Isekai that followed us here, correct?ā
(Megumi)Ā āY-Yes. Everyone else is unaware that youāre even gone!ā
Ainz sighed internally and shook his head.
(Ainz)Ā āYouāre lucky that I was here to stop them. If you did that while I was absent, Iām fairly positive you all would have died. Regardless, how much did you hear?ā
(Aqua)Ā āWell um...the entire thing.ā
(Yu)Ā āW-Well, just so that we didnāt get your heart rate up for nothing, since weāve been here a little longer, we can provide specifics on what weāve seen!ā
(Minako)Ā āOh yeah, thatās right! Weāve been doing a field study or two outside!ā
(Megumi)Ā āDoomguy, Sara, and I have been working with the church.ā
(Ainz)Ā ā...Well, I suppose you will be of use then. We speak not a word of our information to the church, or any of the other houses. Understood?ā
Everyone nodded.
Ainz at first suspected that some of House Isekai might tell the others, but when he thought about it a bit more, who in their right mind would want to betray House Isekai?
All of them were in the same boat as the others.
If they made enemies of anyone, then thereās a good chance they wonāt be coming back alive to their world. Cooperation is absolutely vital for everyone here.
Still, couldnāt hurt to be careful.
(Ainz)Ā āDemiurge.ā
(Demiurge)Ā āMy lord?ā
(Ainz)Ā āCollect the information House Isekai has gathered and see if we can find anything of use. Even mundane details might help us in the long run. Everyone else, as of this moment, House Isekai is under my protection. That does not extend to the Golden Deer, Blue Lions, or Black Eagles.ā
(Everyone)Ā āYes, Lord Ainz!ā
Naberal walked behind him as the House representatives went into the room to discuss with Demiurge.
(Ainz)Ā āNow, Naberal. Letās get going, weāve got a lot of work to do.ā

Side Story:
The Raven-Black Warrior
[First, Letās Gather Information - Overlord]
The first thing that the people of Garreg Machās town noticed that day was how bright the sun was shining. It was a blinding but comforting light.Ā
The second thing they noticed was the man and woman that they had never seen before.Ā Ā
She wore a simple brown cloak, but she was the most beautiful woman they had ever seen.
He was just as captivating, for an entirely different reason. He was extremely tall and wore armor as black as night, complemented with a golden trim that accented his body.Ā
The two swords he had on his back were bigger than the woman who was accompanying him.
No one knew their names but everyone was too afraid to ask, letting them go on their way.
Guards took notice of them and kept a close eye if they attempted anything, they were the most suspicious people in the past few months alone.
(Nabe)Ā āIt appears that adventurers donāt appear to be part of this world. Everyone is staring at us.ā
(Momon)Ā āWell thatās how it was back then, but you seem to be right. They seem to be less in awe and more on guard. Not that I blame them.ā
In his old world, Ainz and Narberal posed as adventurers, Momon and Nabe, looking for quests and worked their way up from the bottom to the top for their heroism and the way they blew through quests.
It seems like the MMO aspects were completely alien in Fodlan, judging by the way everyone looked at them with fear.
When they found their way into the Inn, the same reaction was made by everyone inside.
There wasnāt anything noteworthy inside the inn, not the people or the decor.
He went to the counter and took a seat. There was a woman in knightās armor next to him, but Ainz didnāt pay any mind to her. She was most likely a guard on break or something. The innkeeper turned around and jumped at the towering man in armor before her.
(Innkeeper)Ā āM-May I help you?ā
(Momon)Ā āHow much for the night?ā
(Innkeeper)Ā āUh...100 gold.ā
Ainz reached inside his belt and pulled out a small pouch. Looking inside, it was only 50 gold.
(Momon)Ā ā...I only have 50.ā
(Innkeeper)Ā āThen Iām sorry. We cannot allow you to stay.ā
Nabeās face scrunched up, insulted that her highness should even have to pay for a room. Already knowing how she is in this situation, Ainz raised his hand.
(Momon)Ā āThen thatās fine. Iāll just take a drink. Aleās fine.ā
The innkeeper nodded and went to get the drink as requested.ā
(Female Knight)Ā āPsh, all that fancy armor and you canāt even get a room. Money well spent.ā
The two turned to the woman who finished chugging down her mug.
(MomonĀ āHm?ā
Upon closer inspection, the woman had messy blond hair, and the knightās uniform seemed to be of higher craft.
It was then Ainz noticed her sword. It was some jagged and uneven yellow sword. His thoughts were interrupted from Narberalās reply.
(Nabe)Ā āWatch your tongue.ā
(Momon)Ā āNabe-ā
(Female Knight)Ā āAh, yeah no thatās my bad. Didnāt mean any offense!ā
The knight turned towards Ainz and smiled.
(Female Knight)Ā āJust saying that if you spent the money to get that bad boy made, I donāt blame ya one bit! Not to mention those swords too. Jeez, you arenāt compensating for anything, are ya?ā
Ainz laughed.
(Momon)Ā āI could ask you the same thing. That blade of yours isnāt just for show, is it?ā
(Female Knight)Ā āWhat, you mean Thunderbrand? Hah, I bet it could kick your butt in a fight!ā
Nabe frowned and was clearly getting annoyed at her gloating.
Ainz was starting to take a bit of liking to this woman. It reminded him of a player who was bragging about their gear and how hard they worked for it, daring anyone to take them on in PVP.
Thankfully, he was in a situation where testing his abilities was necessary.
(Momon)Ā āThatās a bet Iād be willing to take.ā
(Female Knight)Ā āYouāre on! Itās been a while since Iāve fought someone who looks like they can back up their talk!ā
The ale was brought to Ainz. He grabbed the mug and motioned it towards the female knight.
(Momon)Ā āNameās Momon.ā
The female knight hit Momonās cup with hers and nodded.
(Female Knight)Ā āMomon, eh? Thatās a strange name. Iām-ā
The door burst open, a blue haired woman dressed in dark green running in.
(Blue Woman)Ā āCatherine!ā
(Catherine)Ā āBah, hang on. Shamir, whatās going on?ā
Shamir walked up to Catherine and cut in front of Ainz and Narberal.
(Shamir)Ā āWeāve located the enemy camp, but thereās far more than we expected.ā
(Catherine)Ā āWhoās going with us?ā
(Shamir)Ā āUs, Jeralt, Alois and a few recruits. The rest of the knights are still investigating the Death Knight.ā
Catherine finished the rest of her drink in a single gulp and turned to Ainz.
(Catherine)Ā āShame, looks like our duelās gonna have to wait!ā
Right as she was about to get up, Ainz spoke up.
(Ainz)Ā āI donāt suppose youād be willing to accept some help?ā
(Shamir)Ā āYou a merc?ā
(Ainz)Ā āAdventurer. Weāre new to the country and my friend and I are here looking for work.ā
(Catherine)Ā āHuh. Talk about convenient.ā
(Shamir)Ā āMight not get paid, that alright with you?ā
Momon got up and nodded.
(Momon)Ā āFine by me. Letās get going.ā
Wasting no time, the four of them headed out of the inn and towards the outskirts of town.
Later...
[Non-Player Character - Overlord]
As they walked down the road, Narberal continued to frown at Catherine and Shamir.
(Momon) sighĀ āNabe, is this about-ā
(Nabe)Ā āYes it is, Loooorrrr-...ahem, Momon.ā
(Momon)Ā āWeāve been over this. Do not hold it against people if they treat me the way they do.ā
(Nabe) sighĀ āItās something I can never fully be comfortable with-ā
(Momon)Ā āNabe, I brought you with me because youāve been with me the longest out in the field. I appreciate your concern but-ā
Momon stopped talking when he noticed that Catherine was slowing down a bit to walk side by side with them.
(Catherine)Ā āSo, where do you two come from?ā
(Momon)Ā āAh, we come from the Alliance.ā
(Catherine)Ā āAny house? Heard your lady friend call you a lord.ā
Ainz internally sighed while Nabeās face flinched.
(Momon)Ā āThatās something weād rather not discuss.ā
(Catherine)Ā āAh, I understand that. Wouldnāt wanna deal with nobles all the time myself when I can just go where I please. That freedom is nice.ā
(Momon)Ā āSo what exactly are we fighting?ā
(Shamir)Ā āBandits. Some monsters and demonic beasts started attacking nearby villages, but we managed to put them down pretty easily. Now we just have to deal with the bandits raiding the survivors. They think nothing can stop them since the knights are busy with other tasks.ā
(Momon)Ā āAnd who do you all work for?ā
(Catherine)Ā āLady Rhea and the Church of Seiros. Specifically, weāre the Knights of Seiros, a division of elite warriors meant to enforce her will.ā
(Momon)Ā āHas there been any other cases of monsters near the Monastery?ā
(Catherine)Ā āWell thereās...actually, now that I think about it, I donāt think so.
Ainz and Narberal took a mental note of that. The Church appears to be keeping quiet about the residents of Nazarick being in House Isekai, and they donāt appear to be suspicious of the fact that they were the ones who made the monsters appear.
But what was a demonic beast?
Before he could ask, they met up with the rest of the knights.Ā
(Jeralt)Ā āFinally you made it. The bandits are about to make their move.ā
(Alois)Ā āNow, letās...Huh? Whoās this?ā
(Catherine)Ā āMomon and...Donāt think I ever caught your name, missy.ā
(Nabe)Ā ā...I am Nabe.ā
(Shamir)Ā āWeāll see if he and his friend are useful or not.ā
(Jeralt)Ā āNameās Jeralt. Captain of the Knights of Seiros.ā
(Alois)Ā āAlois, Jeraltās second in command!ā
Upon first glance, they all appeared to be seasoned veterans. Even though their tone was mostly casual and informal, the way they held themselves and their weapons showed that they knew what they were doing.
(Momon)Ā āIt is a pleasure to meet you all.ā
Everyone turned to Narberal who didnāt say anything at first.
With a slight nudge, Narberal turned to them.
(Nabe)Ā āLetās get this over with.ā
Ainz shook his head.
(Momon)Ā āCome on, at least say hello.ā
(Alois)Ā āHah, I see your daughter is a bit shy!ā
Narberalās calm face exploded into a panic.
āDAUGHTER?! THERE IS NO ONE THAT COULD BE LORD MOMONāS CHILD, AND EVEN IF HE WEDDED, I COULDNāT-ā
āH-HEY! Watch what youāre saying!ā
ā...Ah...ā
ā...ā
Alois burst out laughing while everyone else sighed.
(Alois)Ā āAh, so you arenāt related! Apologies, the way you two talked made me think otherwise!ā
(Momon)Ā āPay it no mind, but please do not try to fluster her like that.ā
Jeralt hit Alois in the back of the head.
(Alois)Ā āAH!ā
(Jeralt)Ā āYou havenāt even seen the manās face, what made you think that theyāre family to begin with?ā
Well, itās not like Alois was completely off the mark.
Ever since the rest of his guild members disappeared, Ainz did view all of Nazarickās beings as his children. Narberal, the Pleiades, and even the Floor Guardians were his sons and daughters.
Highly dysfunctional and psychopathic sons and daughters, but that nevertheless.
(Catherine)Ā āWeāre almost right on top of their camp. We should get moving, already.ā
(Jeralt)Ā āAgreed. Letās go.ā
As the knights made their way, Naberal turned to Ainz.
Her face was still blushing, and it looked like as if she were ready to cry or punch something. Most likely both.
(Momon) sighĀ āDonāt worry about it, okay Nabe?ā
(Nabe)Ā āY-Yes, Momon...ā

[Psychological Warfare - Overlord]
The group hid behind several trees as they looked at the massive bandit camp. They had kidnapped a large amount of people, as well as their belongings.
(Momon)Ā āBandits...ā
(Alois)Ā āThose dastards think they can do what they want when weāre not around! Weāll show them!ā
(Catherine)Ā āIām not going to stand by and let innocents get herded around like cattle!ā
(Shamir)Ā āGet your heads clear. We have to think of a plan, thereās far too many of them for us.ā
Ainz and Narberal didnāt really care about the villagers, if they were to tell the truth.
Ainz only joined in because itād be a good way to find out the strength of those around here.
Even though he wasnāt using any spells and his real power, he would at least see how dangerous bandits and soldiers of this world are.
Monsters like goblins or monsters in general did not seem commonplace in this world at all, which meant there was no good way to gauge how lethal everyone is, or what their levels and experience is. RPG elements seemed absent much to his dismay.
Even if these were bandits, which are normally low level mobs, he would pay dearly if he underestimated them.
That being said, there were no other plans he could think of to accurately assess how dangerous they all were, so thereās just one thing to do now.
Brute force his way in, just like Momon would.
(Momon)Ā ā...I have an idea.ā
(Jeralt)Ā āWhatād that be?ā
(Momon)Ā āTheyāre expecting the Knights of Seiros. They arenāt expecting someone like Nabe and I. While I distract them, you can free the villagers.ā
(Alois)Ā āNo offense, but I doubt you and your big swords there could cleave through all of them.ā
(Momon)Ā āHah, I accept your challenge!ā
Ainz motioned Nabe to follow and started to walk into sight.
(Catherine)Ā āWhat are you doing?!ā
(Momon)Ā āStick to the plan.ā
(Bandit)Ā āHEY, WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!ā
The bandits attention focused on the two walking up towards the camp, alerting the rest of them and making them draw their weapons.
Ainz pulled out his twin greatswords as Nabe pulled out a broadsword.
(Momon)Ā āRaiding towns as monsters are already attacking them? How low...ā
(Bandit)Ā āWeāre doinĀ āem a favor! Either live under us or die by the monsters and church! Now, Iām asking again real nice, WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!ā
(Momon)Ā āMy name is Momon. And this is Nabe. You all would do well to remember these names.ā
(Bandit)Ā āPsh, what? You gonnaĀ ādeliver justiceā to us evildoers or some shit? And whatās with that getup! Youāre trying a bit too hard donāt you think?ā
Narberal gripped her sword tightly, wanting to kill all of them for insulting her lord.
Ainzās head tilted to her to where only she could hear.
(Momon)Ā āSteady your hand a bit longer. I promise you will be able to kill them to your heartās content.ā
Narberal nodded and tried to keep calm.
She then noticed that the group had finally managed to get around the bandits and cut them free.
(Nabe)Ā āMomon-ā
(Momon)Ā āFocus on the bandits, not the villagers.ā
(Bandit)Ā āYou better get out of here if you know whatās good for you...Then again, your armor looks REALLY expensive. And those swords ya got too...!ā
The last of the villagers finally ran away with the recruits as their escorts.
Catherine nodded.
(Momon)Ā āHoho, youāre more than welcome to come and get it!ā
(Bandit)Ā āHAH, GETĀ āEM BOYS!ā
(Momon)Ā āNabe.ā
[Clash - Overlord]
Nabe grinned for a moment before raising her finger to them.
āLightning.ā
A line of electricity shot out, piercing through three banditsā chests and killing them instantly.
(Bandit)Ā āWhat the hell?!ā
(Bandit 2)Ā āMAGE! TAKE HER DO-ā
Three more bandits were cleaved in half as Ainzās sword went flying through the air and stabbed the ground, shooting debris out from the impact.
One of the bandits who survived looked into the air and realized Ainz had flipped into the air, and tossed his other sword down.
When he landed, Ainz grabbed both of his swords and spun in a massive circle, cutting anyone down who was too close.
(Bandit)Ā āFUCK! WHAT THE-ā
An arrow went through his head, shot by Shamir who emerged from the trees.
Catherine and Alois charged in with their weapons cutting everyone in their way down.
Another group of bandits tried to make a run for it before being run over by Jeraltās horse.
Narberal caught up with Ainz and cut another bandit down swiftly.
(Momon) So, looks like bandits are still weak as ever...
He turned his attention towards how Catherine and Alois were fighting. They were killing the bandits left and right, not even breaking a sweat.
Shamirās deadly efficiency made sure every shot that was fired hit the bandit right between the eyes.
(Nabe)Ā āMOMON!ā
Ainz knew a bandit was coming from behind to slash at him. He wouldāve already taken care of it, but he wanted to see just how strong these weapons were.
When the sword made contact, it bounced off and didnāt even leave a scratch.
Truth be told, he was more than a little disappointed.
The bandit slowly backed away as Ainz turned towards him.
(Momon)Ā āDo you want to try again?ā
(Bandit)Ā āAAAH!ā
Right as he turned around, he was impaled through the stomach from Narberalās sword, which she violently kicked him off.
(Nabe)Ā āDisgusting insect...ā
Ainz then examined Narberalās state, to see if she was struggling either.
In terms of level, Narberal was around level 60, and just meant to serve as a distraction in the tombs of Nazarick.
However there was just only a few patches of dirt and blood that got on her. She hadnāt even sustained an injury or broke a sweat.
(Momon) āGood grief, I suppose it was my mistake to expect more from bandits.ā
(Nabe)Ā āYour compassion for these humans are too great, Momon. They do not deserve it!ā
(Momon)Ā āPerhaps. Finish this up, Nabe.ā
(Nabe)Ā āUnderstood.ā
Casting another lightning spell from her finger, she shot at a group that was heading towards Catherine and Alois, and fried them.
Their smoking bodies fell to the ground and finally there was silence.
(Catherine)Ā āAlright, think weāre in the clear! That was some fancy moves, Momon!ā
(Jeralt)Ā āGotta admit, youāre skilled.ā
(Alois)Ā āIāve never seen anyone move like that! Youāre incredible!ā
(Shamir)Ā āHm. Not bad.ā
Narberal smiled for the first time this entire trip.
(Nabe)Ā āOf course heās incredible.ā
(Momon)Ā āNow, now. Letās not get too cocky. We should go find the villa-ā
GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Everyone immediately turned and ran towards the source of the sound. When they finally got back on the roads, the villagers encountered a massive demonic beast.
(Jeralt)Ā āDamn it, I thought we got rid of all of them!ā
(Alois) āEVERYONE, GET BEHIND US!ā
(Momon) Ah, there we go. Knew a quest would have SOME final boss if the mobs were too easy.
Getting into stance, the villagers all got behind the Knights as the beast slowly walked up.
It was some form of a giant wolf, with the fangs almost as large as a man.
Ainz and Narberal tried to buff themselves with passive skills but where shocked when nothing they said was activating it.
(Nabe)Ā āM-My magic...!ā
(Momon)Ā āI see, so this world took our buffs away. Meaning-ā
Although his face couldnāt smile anymore, heād have the widest one at this very moment.
[NPC Battle - Overlord]
(Momon)Ā āWE JUST GOT TO FIGHT IT THE OLD FASHIONED WAY!ā
Ainz and Narberal charged first, followed by Catherine and Jeralt. Shamir and Alois stayed back to ensure that the civilians would be safe, letting Shamir fire off arrows.
The wolf swiped its paws at Ainz, barely blocking in time with his dual greatswords. The arrows seemed to bounce off the demonic beast when it made contact.
(Shamir)Ā āDamn it!ā
It pushed him back, almost making him lose balance with the force behind it.
Retaliating, Ainz swung his sword at the hide of the wolf, but it was reflected off.
Narberal casted another lightning attack and fired it head on.
The demonic beast was damaged, although not by much.
It tried swinging at Narberal next, but Catherine parried its claws in time, using Thunderbrand to cut parts of the claws off, making it roar in pain.
Wasting no time, Narberal quickly put distance between her and the beast.
Jeraltās horse ran by and he threw a javelin into that arm, making it roar even louder.
The demonic beast spun around, using its tail to knock everyone back.
Ainz was caught in the attack and flew backwards. When he got up, he started laughing.
(Ainz)Ā āI FORGOT WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO FEEL PAIN!ā
While it wasnāt nearly as powerful as he was expecting the nameĀ ādemonic-beastā to be, it still posed a bit of a threat if he was way too careless.
However, itās been so long since anything had actually managed to hurt him. Even though his specialty wasnāt swordfighting, it got his adrenaline going once more.
It was a feeling a player finding an enemy in a video game that could actually pose as a fun boss battle.
Narberal had a mixed expression on her face. A half scowl and smile. She was happy he was enjoying himself, but at the same time it was her duty to protect him.
Ainz went into the fray once more, trading blows with the surprisingly agile demonic beast.
The two traded and dodged their attacks, seemingly being at equal skill.
Catherine and Jeralt got back up and saw Ainz single-handedly taking it on.
(Catherine)Ā āJeez, what is he?!ā
(Jeralt)Ā āI donāt believe it!ā
Finally landing a score that struck home, one of Ainzās greatswords got stuck into the uninjured arm of the demonic beast, making it howl out.
(Momon)Ā āCatherine!ā
Catherine managed to shake off her awe and swiped at the tail of the demonic beast, cutting it cleanly off.
Jeralt used his lance to stab the beast in the leg, making the lance come out the other side and ensuring it canāt move.
Shamir finally got into a good position in the trees and let an arrow loose, the arrow going into its eye.
Alois used his axe to lop off the lower jaw of the demonic beast when it was staggered, finally leaving Narberal an opening.
(Nabe)Ā āDragon lightning!ā
An even brighter line of electricity shot out of her fingers, but it quickly transformed into the shape of a dragon as it charged straight into the demonic beast, making its entire body shake.
Once it stopped, Ainz hopped into the air and dug his swords straight into its neck.
Letting go and quickly grabbing the hilts with opposite hands, he pulled them back out in a way to decapitate the beast, and let its headless body flop onto the ground.Ā
[Non-Player Character - Overlord]
With one final sigh, Ainz swung the blood off his blade and sheathed them on his back.
Narberal quietly sheathed her sword on her belt and stood alongside him.
(Alois)Ā āNow THAT was even more amazing!ā
(Catherine)Ā āShow off.ā
(Shamir)Ā āLike youāre one to talk.ā
(Jeralt)Ā āThatās enough already. Letās get these villagers home.ā
Everyone nodded and made sure all the villagers were safely home. The recruits offered to protect them as they reported back to Garreg Mach until an actual guard detachment came.Ā
When they finally arrived back in Garreg Machās town, Catherine turned to the two adventurers.
(Catherine)Ā āYouāre not busy tonight, are you?ā
(Momon)Ā āI do not believe we are.ā
(Catherine)Ā āThen, how would you like to work with us? Bet you all would help out the Knights of Seiros greatly.ā
(Shamir)Ā āHah. Thatās high praise coming from her.ā
(Momon)Ā āIt depends. May I speak to the leader...who is that by the way?ā
(Alois)Ā āWow, you must really be out of the loop! The leader of the Church of Seiros is Archbishop Rhea. Iām sure she isnāt busy at the moment!ā
(Momon)Ā āThen letās go find her. Weāll make our decision from there.ā
Catherine and Alois went to speak with Rhea in private. After a few silent moments, a knight opened the door to the Hearing Chamber.
(Knight)Ā āHer lordship wishes to see you now.ā
[Gazing At Sirius - Fire Emblem: Three Houses]
Ainz nodded, and both he and Narberal went inside and found her standing in the middle.
He had seen her a couple times when every single person had their weapon pointed at them, but it didnāt seem that they knew who they were.
Knowing that she basically ruled all over Fodlan, Ainz did what his followers normally did upon seeing him.
Ainz got on knee, with his arm over it and other arm over his chest.
Narberal had a face as if someone had insulted her creator AND Ainz at the same time, but quickly did the same. It bothered her to no end, but she was going to have to suck it up.
(Rhea)Ā āThere is no need for such actions. Please, rise.ā
Doing so, she smiled.
(Rhea)Ā āI heard that you decided to help out the Knights of Seiros, even without the promise of pay?ā
(Momon)Ā āI may be an adventurer, but I would never turn away from those in need.ā
(Rhea)Ā āSuch a kind heart you have, mister Momon. You have my respect and admiration. However, I cannot permit you into the Knights of Seiros with just this action alone.ā
(Momon)Ā ā...I understand, my lady.ā
(Rhea)Ā āThat being said, with your combat prowess impressing two of my highest in command, Catherine and Alois, I will permit this, if you choose to accept. You will fight alongside the Knights of Seiros asa mercenary. But with enough time, you may enlist in the ranks of the Knights.ā
(Momon)Ā āI accept this with the highest honor, my lady.ā
(Rhea)Ā āAnd what about you?ā
Narberal was about ready to spit in Rheaās face, the idea of pledging allegiance to someone else other than Ainz repulsed her to no end. But knowing the reprimand and cataclysmic setback that insult would have, she nodded.
(Nabe)Ā āI accept this with the highest honor...my lady.ā
(Rhea)Ā āYou have my gratitude. Please, rest within the Monastery. We have quarters waiting for you. Your assignments will begin soon.ā
Bowing, they both left towards their quarters.
Their beds were set across from each other, but they had no real need of that. They could use the teleportation rings to go back to House Isekaiās dorms.
But for the time being, they would stay here and learn firsthand how the Knights of Seiros acts.
He was satisfied that they managed to infiltrate a bit more subtly into the Church of Seiros. It was a lot better than attempting to be a student. Done that once, no need to do that again.
Ainz felt like he didnāt need to worry about the Floor Guardianās relations with the classmates of House Isekai as much due to prior experience with Kazuma and his group.
That being said he was quite curious about the others. Class VII, the Phantom Thieves, the Doom Slayer, all of it was quite perplexing.Ā
Just what kind of mess was he getting into this time?
However, he decided to not jump down that rabbit hole tonight.
There was more pressing matters to attend to.
That being Narberal.
(Momon)Ā āNaberal Gamma.ā
Hearing his voice say her name in that angry of a tone sent shivers throughout her entire body.
And it was also the fact he used her real name.
(Narberal)Ā āU-Uh...-ā
[First Wife War - Overlord]
BAP!
(Narberal)Ā āL-Lord Ainz?!ā
(Ainz)Ā āWhat was THAT back there with Rhea?ā
(Narberal)Ā āI-Iām afraid I donāt understand?ā
(Ainz)Ā āNarberal Gamma, you are aware of the face you made when I knelt, correct?ā

---
(Ainz)Ā āWe are extremely lucky that Rhea did not mention that! Or that anyone else was in the room!ā
(Narberal)Ā āI-I apologize with all my being, Lord Ainz!ā
She immediately got on her knees and was about to shout even more, but Ainz stopped her.
(Ainz)Ā āEnough. I know youād be willing to slit your own neck to apologize.ā
(Narberal)Ā ā...Do you wa-ā
(Ainz)Ā āNo, I do NOT want you to do that!ā sigh
Ainz facepalmed, and then attempted to rub his temple, A. forgetting that he doesnāt have one anymore, and B. he was wearing a helmet.
(Ainz)Ā āRefrain from making that face. Remember, we are BLENDING in.ā
(Narberal)Ā āI...I understand.ā
(Ainz)Ā āWe should be safe in the Monastery. Wash yourself up and relax for a little bit before returning here. I need to make a call to Albedo.ā
(Narberal)Ā āYes, Lord Ainz...ā
Ainz could tell Nazarickās stay in Fodlan was going to be a very long one...Ā

Watched Anime Genre
Watched List:Ā Isekai 2016-PresentĀ
Anime:Ā The Rising of the Shield HeroĀ
Plot:Ā Naofumi Iwatani is an otaku that is summoned through a book as 1 of 4 heroes to the world of Melromarc, to stop the Waves from destroying the world. Betrayal and ruined reputation causes Naofumi to be shunned by the people of Melromarc as well as the other heroes, forcing him to fight the Waves in his own way, all because he bares the shield. Pros: One of the more unique isekai animes out there. Instead of just one hero, there are four heroes, each from different versions of Japan. Instead of having a quirk or completely overpowered from the beginning, the main is instead knocked down to his lowest, resulting his not so heroic approach to situations. Gradually he begins to trust those closest to him and out of the bunch, he is the most grounded person and grasps reality far better than his fellow heroes. Cons: Pacing can feel a bit slow in the anime since there is a lot of small things building up before you get to the next big thing.(omg I want to knock some sense into the other heroes) And the anime tends to throw in a tad more details to make it feel as those Naofumi has a harem than it really is. (the one filler moment actually contradicts a detail the following canon scene) Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā” [4.5/5] Comments: With the pacing, itās perhaps better to be reading the manga. And since this is originally a Light Novel, I HIGHLY recommend watching AniNewsās youtubeĀ channel on Rising of the Shield Hero: Skipped Content as it helps fill in gaps not placed in the manga and/or anime.Ā
Andddd I really canāt wait for the Scythe Hero to appear in ep 22<3
Anime: KonoSuba: God's Blessing On This Wonderful World! Plot: āWhen high schooler Kazuma SatouĀ dies, his given the choice to be reincarnated in a fantasy world much like a video game and be granted one item or ability. But can a dimwitted Goddess, explosion craze crimson demon,Ā masochistĀ crusader, and a lucky/unlucky adventurer to defeat the Devil King?ā Pros: A very clever and humorous adventure with a group of misfits. Cons: There were a few points that felt a bit much or overly done. *cough*Aqua*cough* but luckily goes back into genuinely funny scenes. Too easily can turn into perverted moments for a non harlem type series. Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā”Ā [4/5] Personal Thoughts: Honestly canāt help comparing Meguminās ability to another light novel character. Agnis, from Adventures of Duan Surk, a fire sorceress that can only use high level fire magic and passes out after each use.Ā Except in Meguminās case itās Explosion magic. Besides that, and the quite troublemaking goddess- this series is unique enough as a comedy of misfits trying to live in a fantasy RPG world.
Anime: Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World Plot:Ā ā With the biggest crisis of his life being summoned to another world and no sign of the one who summoned him, things become worse when he is attacked. However, when he is saved by a mysterious silver-haired girl with a fairy cat, Subaru cooperates with the girl to return the favor.ā Pros: A series with mix of carefree moments as well as suspenseful.Ā Cons: Subaru can have some very unlikable moments, other times you can feel your heart being torn to shreds to the point you wonder how would you fair in his shoes. Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā” [4/5] Comments:Ā Seriously Sabaru- Forget Emilia and go for waifu-Rem! TTATT
Anime: Saga Of Tanya The Evil Plot:Ā āAn unnamed atheist Japanese salaryman, in the moment of being murdered by a disgruntled subordinate who he had fired due to poor performance at work, is confronted by a entity that could stop time which he refers to as "Being X" or god, who condemns the man for not having 'faith'. He is sentenced to be reborn in a world that is similar to World War I Europe, mixed with early aspects of World War IIĀ and magic, in an empire torn apart by countless wars with all nearby countries.āĀ Pros: Seeing the main getting bested and even frighten by āBeing Xā in an endless mind game while in a world in middle of war. Cons: ... uh what else is there to this series? Like how is the plot still moving? Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„Ā ā” Ā ā” [3/5] Comments:Ā Iām not much into war types but this was alright I suppose. Not terrible, not a fave, and not memorable.
Anime: Overlord Plot:Ā āWhen the shut-down time arrives, Momonga finds that the game hasn't vanished. Instead it appears as if Yggdrasil has been recreated as its own reality along with its various NPCs having been brought to life while Momonga has been trapped in the form of his game avatar, leaving him unable to use the normal player functions, such as General Message, or even to log out. With no other option, Momonga sets out to learn if anyone from the real world is also in this new world with him.ā Pros: Curiously await what the future holds in Ainzās adventure in this fantasy world and his NPCs seeking control of the world in his name. Cons: Albedo needs to dial back just a smidge. Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā” [4.5/5] Comments:Ā Donāt get attached to anyone outside the Great Tomb of Nazarick .Ā
Anime: Isekai Quartet Plot: 12 minute comedic episodes of characters (Overlord, KonoSoba, Re:Zero, and Saga of Tanya the Evil) are sent to another world to survive āschool lifeā. Pros: Ever wonder what it would be like to have different series come together and temporarily work together at school? Wanna see what character would get along and their reactions? Yep, this would be the show for ya.Ā Cons: Episodes are too short! Once you finally get somewhere interesting, it gets cut to the next episode. Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā” [4.5/5] Comments:Ā Best way to watch this series is to binge tbh. Itās actually a lot of fun seeing the mains becoming friends and understanding their strengths and weaknesses.Ā
Anime: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Plot:Ā āSatoru Mikami, an average 37 year old office worker from Tokyo with no girlfriend, is stabbed to death by a passing robber. After making some requests during his death, he is reincarnated in another world as a slime with the ability known as predator (which can devour other creatures and obtain their abilities)ā Pros: Unique concept of an overpowered little slime Cons: Personal Rating: Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā” [4/5] Comments:Ā I really need to watch the rest of this series TTwTT
Anime: The Wise ManāsĀ Grandson/Grandchild Plot:Ā āA young salaryman dead in an accident was reborn in another world filled with magic and demons. As a baby, he was picked up by the patriot hero "Sage" Merlin Wolford and was given the name Shin. He was raised as a grandson and soaked up Merlin's teachings, earning him some irresistible powers. However, when Shin became 15, Merlin realized, "I forgot to teach him common practice!"ā Pros: comical moments and fun action scenes. Interesting uses of knowledge from past life. Cons: Um... when/why did this become a gakuen life show? Why should we care about the very generic classmates that add little to nothing to the plot besides the crown prince? .... and you call that romance? Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā” [4/5] Comments:Ā Has a very strong start and I REALLY WANNA LIKE it but Iām starting to lose interest whenever Shin isnāt using his magic in a battle as everything tends to beĀ āoh noes we canāt let the world know of Shinās giftsā toĀ āLook what Shin did for us!ā in the next instant.... everything looks pretty at least.
Anime: How NOT To Summon a Demon Lord Plot:Ā āTakuma Sakamoto is a hikikomori gamer who is mysteriously transported to the world of his favourite MMORPG, Cross Reverie, with the appearance of his own character in the game, the Demon Lord Diablo. The two young girls who summoned him, the pantherian Rem and the elf Shera, attempt to use a spell to make Takuma their servant, but due to his passive "Magic Reflection" ability, the spell rebounds, and both end up with magic collars stuck on their necks, thus becoming his slaves instead. With a serious case of social anxiety, Takuma decides to act like his character while interacting with others, and makes use of his high stats and vast knowledge of Cross Reverie's lore to survive in his new environment, traveling along with Rem and Shera to look for a way to remove their slave collars while helping them with their own, personal issues that led them to summon him in the first place.ā Pros: The comedy and Diabloās battles are satisfying to watch. Cons: The not so subtleĀ ecchi moments, in particular one ritual scene that was... a bit much personally. Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā” [4.5/5] Comments:Ā If you donāt mind watching ecchi stuff, youāll have a fun time with the story and overpowering battle moments.
Anime: Death March To The Parallel WorldĀ Rhapsody Plot:Ā āIchiro Suzuki is a 29-year old gaming programmer who was tasked with fixing several bugs in two MMORPGs his company is preparing for publication. After taking a nap, he mysteriously wakes up in a parallel world that resembles some of the fantasy RPG worlds he had worked on, as a 15-year old named Satou Pendragon. However, before he could grasp his current situation, an army of lizardmen ambush him and launches an all-out attack on him. In desperation, he uses all three of his special 'Meteor Rain' attack options (a quick fix he added to the game for new players which kills all enemies in the vicinity) at once and wipes them all out.ā Pros: A very casual journey of a character with too much exp points and money. Cons:Ā Everything always works out in the end. Is a harlem REALLY needed here? Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā” Ā ā” [3/5] Comments:Ā Itās a nice laid back Isekai series. I just wish the Elf arch had more of challenge and thrill, and the very cliche harlem girl gimmicks doesnāt make the relaxing scenes all that pleasant. Guess I was really hoping more to the story? I mean it has potential just doesnāt go there quick enough.
Anime: In Another World With My Smartphone Plot:Ā ā Fifteen-year-old Touya Mochizuki is accidentally killed by God. As an apology, God allows him to be resurrected, but since he cannot send him back to his old world, he instead reincarnates him into a fantasy world along with a single special request. Touya uses his request in order to bring his smartphone into the new world with him, which God modifies so that the phone will function in the new world. God also greatly amplifies Touya's physical, magical, and cognitive abilities to a certain degree as a further apology for the inconvenience of killing him. Taking full advantage of his second chance at life, Touya befriends many different people, mainly females and high-ranking people in the new world. He begins to travel from country to country, solving political disputes, minor quests, and nonchalantly enjoying himself with his newfound allies.ā Pros: Visuals are pretty Cons: What was meant to be ābasicsā in magic turns out to be the over power ability of knowing all affinities, thus youāre the strongest being in the world.Ā Thereās little to no consequencesĀ for his actions... everything always works out because of his op ability and the number of girls grow.Ā Personal Rating:Ā ā„ ā„ ā„ Ā ā” Ā ā” [3/5] Comments:Ā This is straight up a LITERAL harem anime. Ā Iām having to stop watching after episode 12 as it reveals heāll wind up with 9 wives by the end of the series. Given how everything is hunky-dory and the girls are just being unreasonable- yeah- lost interest.

NON-SPOILER REVIEW Overall: This was very good. This was a solid stage. I thoroughly enjoyed the action, I enjoyed so many of the new actors, seeing the horrors IN PERSON and so up close was amazing! The use of the projection mappings and how they used the front screen for the effects was really cool! The combination of heavy rock and action scenes was a perfect combination and I absolutely adored the two - three big action scenes that used heavy rock music to their advantage to intensify the action. One of the fighting scenes actually really impressed me with HOW they did it! Also the fact that we had a LIVE band performing is awesome! The adlibbing was gold. I can see a lot of potential in some of the characters and their future storylines. I hope we get more development and more appearances from certain characters in the future! I thoroughly enjoyed myself at this stage, even with the earthquake about 30 minutes into it which FREAKED me off. However, I had a few technical issues. This play couldāve been amazing with about 2 - 3 more days rehearsing. Let me clarify; the actors are not the issue at all! But, the sound staff and the scene transitions were very questionable at times. Sometimes the sound effects for punches and such were either played too early or too late, and it was glaringly, obviously off beat. There were a lot of moments where the orchestra would go from one song to the next as a scene ended and started, but thereād be like 10 seconds during that transition where none of the actors could more or say their lines, and it felt very unnatural and roboticly timed. If they had had just a few more days of rehearsals I really think they couldāve fixed and perfected the sound and music timing. The other issue I had was the story. The main story and the main points of the story were absolutely fine, but I felt like one character and their story line (which is attached to the main plot) was totally unnecessary. At first I thought maybe only I have these issues, but upon talking to other friends, our negatives about the play matched completely. They also had problems with the timeline in the story too, they said it was confusing to figure out when all these events are supposed to take place. But luckily, I was able to understand the timeline without any problems. But besides me, my friends found that a problem. Rating:Ā 6/10 - I enjoyed myself, but with a few more days of rehearsing and script revising, this stage could have been amazing.

SPOILER REVIEW
PreShow
I was very confused when I got to the cinema and got in line for the goods. My goodness Goods was confusing!! You had to pick up your goods from the tables first THEN line up to pay?! No wonder the line was going so fast!! XD It took me a minute or two to figure out what the hell was going on. I kind of wish all shows did this. Would be so much faster in the goods line!! Rather than waiting for Miss-Take-A-Lot who is always in front of me buying about 40 sets of different bromides when all I want is a pamphlet but I have to stand behind her for 10 fucking minutes, also because the effing staff are taking their god damn time too trying to get everything and counting everything out for then about three times. <<< A common occurrence I experience unfortunately.
But anyway....
Then I got into the theatre and right away the very front screen is down and the projection mapping for the Garo opening sequence/advertisement on the screen looks so damn cool! And the GARO music to go along with it!! It was very Messiah-esque in that it had random patterns and shapes floating about but you knew they signified something or someone. Just like in Messiahās movie openings. It was so cool to watching while counting down to show time.
I was to the right of the stage fourth row, but just not far enough to have any of the stage cut off - PHEW!!
Finally, about 20 minutes in, I āŖFINALLY experienced an earthquake during a show! It was bound to happen soon xDā¬ although it went on for much longer than I was comfortable with so I momentarily didnāt focus on the play, so I have no idea what happened during those few minutes.
The Story
I want to talk about the story first:
So the story actually jumps around; it occurs before, during and after the Jinga tv show. Some people (as mentioned above) found it really difficult to figure out when it was set but I took little hints to figure out when it was. The first 40 minutes or so are set before Jinga is reborn as a human; heās still hanging around Amelie and the Horror are bowing down before him. Then the middle section is set during the Jinga tv show; we see where he went those few episodes where he came back bloody or he doesnāt remember what happened. And the final part is setting during after the events of Jinga when he gets his Horror posse to turn and such.
The main running thread throughout all this is a girl called Tomoha. Tomoha is a Makai Priest in training, and she has a group who she trains with, she has a sister, and has some normal friends. One of her normal friends unfortunately succumbs and becomes a horror, but Jinga gets involved and reverts her back to a human being. Tomoha learns that the person who saved her friend is called Jinga and that he can turn horrors back to humans. After this she decides to find him, but when she does Jinga doesnāt recognise nor remember her. She realises there are two Jingas. Later she wants to introduce him to her training clan but while there Jingaās Horror henchmen, and a group wanting to destroy Jinga turn up and the entire clan is doomed.
That the basicness of the entire story. Now to get into details.
The Show
Maybe Iāll just get the negatives out first and then I can flail to the end.
ā As mentioned above I had some technical issues with the play. First was the timing between action/movements and the sound effects. The timing of some action hits were either too fast or too slow. And the off beat of the sounds were glaringly obvious unfortunately. Also, the transitions between songs, the actors would stay frozen until the right note in the music and then the scene or line would start, which made it look and feel very robotic.
āĀ I really do think just a little more (a few days of) rehearsing wouldāve really perfected this stage! There were technically things like timing that couldāve been spot on if they had had just a little more time. I heard from a friend that:Ā they didnātĀ have a GenePro for the press because it wasn't good enough yet, and that they kept pushing things back until eventually just cancelled the GenePro and only gave interviews instead. So clearly, Iām right in thinking (even at Senshuuraku) that they needed a few more days. During the curtain call, Masahiro even commented that he only had one day to rehearse. But Iām not even calling out on the acting! I thought everyone did well. I only had issue with technically stuff.
ā Call me bias but the first 30 mins or so were so unnecessary and were pretty boring. They use Tomoha as the central character for the plot but in all honesty, Tomohaās entire storyline and participation was unneeded and unnecessary.Ā I liked the main storyline for Jinga, and the storyline of Jinga being tracked down by the Ikkei crew, but Tomoha was completely pointless. We didnāt need herĀ in order to know about a training group of priests and knights, we didnāt need to know she had a sister, we didnāt need one of her friends to turn horror, we didnāt need her begging for Jinga to save her. This all couldāve been just a random human or a random training crewĀ and nothing in the main storyline would have changed. Jinga couldāve just found and gotten to that training crew on his own, Jinga couldāve āsavedā this human-turn-horror without introduction. We didnāt need to know about her or her sister or any one specifically at all. You couldāve switched ANYONE in where she was and it wouldnātĀ have made any difference to the story at all. Having her as theĀ āmain characterā just made the first half full of unnecessary introductions, absolutely pointless, and SO BORING.
ā And because the story was somewhat lacking, they really missed a great opportunity to have Jinga get really evil. We have Tomoha who has clearly fallen for Jinga and completely trusts him, and youāre telling me Jinga didnāt even TRY to manipulate and use her?! I really wanted Jinga to USE her! Manipulate her! USE HER!!! Thatās what the real Jinga would do! Heād be likeĀ āoh this idiot LIKES me. Well Iāll trick her into falling in love with me and then sheāll do anything for me mwahahaā but nooooooooooo the story makes a romantic bullshit subplot out of it where itās hinted that Jinga also likes her. Oh FUCK OFF! The real Jinga would have used and abused her, and he would have laughed in her face the moment her world came crashing down! Thatās the Jinga we know! But alas the story did not go there. Seriously, a few more days of script writing and rehearsing wouldāve made this amazing!!Ā
ā Another thing I wish that changed in the script was during a few battle scenes, the entire cast are dancing to the battle music rather than actually fighting... wtf?Again, another missed opportunity! Even as the music and the dancing started, I immediately thought: TARANTINO!Ā I really wish they had done a Tarantino-style thing: Jinga orchestrating and dancing to music while everyone else is actually fighting and screaming. That wouldāve been much better. I was completely fine with Jinga being all orchestry and dancing but I think going Tarantino style wouldāve been better: only he can hear the music and is dancing, while everyone else is actually screaming and fighting. Instead of this bullshit of everyone, including Horrors, dancing to the entire song.
ā Lastly, I didnāt have a problem, butĀ a lot of people were confused as what the the timeline of this story was. Iāve already explained above, but I can see how others mightĀ been confused. It wasnāt exactly stated so you just had to pick up on what people were saying and who was where in order to understand what point in the timeline we were in.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/013fc1c2664a22483d212fddc87319cf/tumblr_inline_plel3zp6rV1qawusl_540.jpg)
Now to the fangirling!!
āĀ Sticking to the fighting and music topic: The actual fighting scenes with the very heavy rock music were AMAZING! You could feel the music through the floor and the fighting was very well choreographed! It was so god damn fun!!
ā Iām jumping ahead but the best fight scene was definitely the climax fight between Jinga and Sasha. It was absolutely amazing how they did it!!! Ikkei (Sasha) had a body double so it looked like Sasha could move super fast from one end of the stage to the other! It was so fast paced, and so well executed, that even from the 4th row, I couldnāt tell where the real Ikkei was during the fight! Also the use of the lighting during this scene, and having their weapons light up. We had some points that were in complete darkness and all you could see were Jingaās sword and Sashaās weapons that were lit up and fighing. It was SUCH A GOOD SCENE. It was best scene in the entire play. Absolute kudos to the choreographer and to Masahiro, Ikkei, his body double and everyone involved in that scene because holy hell it was amazing!

ā We had a LIVE orchestra the entire time which was absolutely amazing! The music itself is just a masterpiece! Itās so good! I guess thatās why they called it Garo the āLive Entertainmentā.
ā There was a higawari/daily change guest every day and the show I went to had Kashiwagi Yusuke as the guest. If you donāt know, I love Kashiwagi so I was super excited for this! And he did not disappoint. He was GOLD.
Yuusuke did fucking Osomatsu!!! Everyone was DYING of laughter! Even Amelie and the other cast couldnāt keep it together!Ā SO MANY OSOMATSU JOKES!! So his story is that Amelie and co. canāt eat him because he already made a promise with Jinga that Jinga would devour him. So he explains that he wanted to save his brothers (and that there are six of them), but they accidentally got mixed up in his scheme of trying to rob a bank, and they all ended up getting shot at. In exchange for stopping those bullets from hitting his brother, he agrees to make a deal with Jinga. During his storytelling four of the ensemble came on stage in the other Oso-coloured jumpsuits and Yusukeās like āWHEREāS PURPLE?!?! You couldnāt even get me five people?!ā He was absolutely amazing! So many round of applauses during his higawari. And he did some backflips too. At theĀ Amilie ran after him with her knife like āKKAAARRAAAMMAATTSUU!!!ā.
During the curtain call, he said he wants to come back as a Horror if they ever let him come back. He also apologised to the vast colour difference between everyoneās outfit and his; he was ain a bright blue jumpsuit with a kimono styles scarf over his shoulders xD Absolutely GOLD.
ā I absolutely loved being able to see Jingaās costume so up close! I absolutely adore his grey coat from the TV show and being able to see the detail of that coat so close in person was amazing!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/93e099eb9c9b72a5bc834cdfefaf1ec0/tumblr_inline_plel3f5ECe1qawusl_540.jpg)
ā Also the full body Horror and Makai Knight suits that we got to see on stage were phenomenal! They looked AMAZING! They were pretty terrifying as they went past me in the theatre! xD And huge kudos to the people wearing those suits. They must be absolutely dying in sweat in those suits!!
ā There is a scene where we get to see the switch between Human Jinga and Horror Jinga. Seeing that transition right in front of my eyes was amazing! I love how different his body language and posture is between the two Jingas. I also adore how different his fighting style is too between the two versions of him.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d2e8860db4d669a6dde8c05e29dcfe2c/tumblr_inline_plel65XrbI1qawusl_540.jpg)
ā Ikkei/Sasha was so good too! I absolutely adored his look. I love how he always called himselfĀ āSashaā and referred to himself in the third person, and I love how over the top he can be. And I already said but that final fighting scene with him was phenomenal!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f57e2cf064a7727424740e8ad0df8fc8/tumblr_inline_plel6vdUaS1qawusl_500.jpg)
ā Nakamura/Fugiās fighting style and weapon is so cool! I really loved how much control he had with his weapon. He had some moves where the weapon couldāve easily fallen out of his hand and gone flying but he had such control and so flawlessly used it. I was so impressed.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e892b7b2821ff8b937e14cdff6dffd20/tumblr_inline_plel7aXbYE1qawusl_540.jpg)
ā Koudai as Ushio was GREAT! He was playing a young, cheerful, sorted stupid Knight in training and he just lit up the stage with his happiness and silly moments xD I wanted so much for him to survive and get all revenge-y on Jingaās ass! I was so sad when he died. I wanted so much more from him!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ac8f5b99cf80a8ef2e1b2c22022bbed6/tumblr_inline_plel8lzGjb1qawusl_400.jpg)

ā A quick note on the Sasha/Fugi/Ruka/Ontake group:Ā They are neither Makai nor Horror. From what I understood, theyāre from their own world and Ontake is actually like....a god? or at least an overseeyer of the human world. Because she has a forest of candles, and the candles are everyoneās life/souls. Some candles have black flames which shows whoās become a horror, and the rest are normal flames. So essentially theyāre from another... dimension/world? And they hear about Jingaās plan to steal their goddess/spirit called Tomino so they want to kill him before he can get to Tomino.
ā There is a twist at the end where Tomoha is possessed by Tomino (we assume sheās a goddess/spirit from the world that Ikkei is from) which meansĀ āTomohaā might have a bigger role in the future.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f0dae96cd813d3a20db222551d6ead67/tumblr_inline_plel97T2nE1qawusl_540.jpg)
ā A comment from curtain called that I enjoyed: Nakamura mentioned that heād like a spin off dorama just about his character Fugi, and then Rukaās actor was like āI hope Ruka gets a spin off dorama too!ā. Inoue immediately after said ānot like Sashaās gonna get one cos heās deadā and Ikkei was absolutely distraught looking, it was hilarious. He was like āhey!!!!!!!!! I can come back! I can just pop out of nowhere!ā
ā After the show: Miyabi/Amilie was at the dvd corner and Inoue/Jinga was at the buppan corner!
*
And thatās all! I hope you enjoyed this short review!

If Xanxus were to be trapped in the Capital of the Empire from Akame ga Kill without his guardians and you had to choose six characters from six different anime series to be his guardians, who would you choose and what would their cover job while stuck in the capital? We all know Xanxus would probably be a high quality gunsmith/craftsman when not being the Boss of his new guardians.
First off, I will admit that it took me a while to respond to this because I didnāt know the series so I had no idea what the Imperial Capital of Akame ga Kill was like. So then I read through it a few times to really get a feel for what the Capital was like. So lots of wow, dark and gruesome. Also unviable in the long-run in terms of the Imperial Captialās consumption of human lives/resources but it wasnāt like Honest cared about that. Country bumpkins and all that.
All it did was give me a more massive lady-crush on Esdesu/Esdeath. Because wow. Like throughout it I was like, sheās a goddess of sadism and I will happily worship her as such. I will now measure any ice-user against Esdeath and find them falling short when sheās been described as āa natural disaster with a wicked conscious,ā to paraphrase.
Second, it took me time to consider who. I donāt watch a lot of anime, but thatās because that takes so much more time than reading the manga. More to the point, I wanted people that could get along with Xanxus and not end up killed or attracting too much attention from the capitalās guards.
I mean itās rather counter-productive if Xanxus kills them or they kill Xanxus?
Storms are supposed to attack fast, keep attacking and not let up. For the famiglia or something; thatās the role of the Storm Guardian. Therefore finding someone of Storm temperament thatās not a complete reckless idiot is an issue.
I wanted to use Ichigo but then I realized that heās too moral to last long in the Empire. Then I thought about using Renji and I was like, ātoo naive about human culture, will get killed.ā
So then my brain goes destruction, disintegration. Scar from Full Metal Alchemist. Iād think heād make a decent carpenter, when heās not investigating some rumor. I fully expect him to gain a wanted poster at some point.
Of course with Scar means that I canāt use Oliver Armstrong as one of the six but she wouldnāt have made a good fit either.
Suns are supposed to protect their famiglia through the use of their bodies. Which sounds vaguely meat-shield-ish until you realize itās more about crushing enemies than tanking. Vongola Suns are supposed to be scary badasses, alright?
I decided on Yuusuke Urameshi. Heās distinct, kinda flashy, a little crude and not a complete idiot. Also has moral limits but mostly in regards to his friends and allies. The ānot a complete idiotā thing disqualified a lot of them.
As Yusukeās skills extend to either cooking or fighting and he has issues with authority, heās probably cooking something to earn money.
In theory he could teach martial arts or something but I donāt think he has the discipline to do so. Plus it seems like all training centers/temples are under the Empireās control so would be bad bad idea.
Lightnings are supposed to draw attention and conflict to them. And then survive it. Itās a meat-shield/tank position, alright? Also bait, but well, they clearly get the worst gimmick here.
Levi Ackerman. Heās probably a very Cloudy Lightning, but heās terrible with authority he doesnāt respect. I believe that Xanxus and Levi could learn to respect each other, if they didnāt kill each other first.
That cleaning obsession is a bit useful though. He probably ends up scouting for the Rebel Army and killing various Imperials because he does value human lives. This Levi is a lot more competent than Xanxusā previous Levi; thatās better, this one is fun.
Honestly if Xanxus makes weapons, Levi is going to likely work in the store. Just shopkeep Leviā¦ the idea is hilarious and will likely end up with dead bodies on the floor at one point.
Rains are supposed to wash away conflict and square up accounts aka grudges. Another killing role there, alright?
My first thought here was Gray Fullbuster. And then I realized that that wouldnāt work either. Too reckless. Also his ice is rather pathetic compared to Esdeath.
Somehow my mind went to Karasuba from Seikeirei from there. Not sure why. Probably because she and Esdeath are vaguely similar.
Honestly Akame is very much a Rain. However I went with Robin from One Piece. Morbid humor, assassin experience and the ability to deal with people without wanting to dismember them.
Sales-lady.
Izzy could have gone with Uzuki Yuugao from Naruto but she wouldnāt mesh very well with the others, so Robin.
Mists are another defensive/protective role, dealing more with misinformation and deception. Itās an important role, involves a lot of trust but also puts them as support types for the most part.
Fast-paced trickery is difficult and takes a lot of intelligence to pull off effectively. Also illusionist/magesā¦ Most mages end up being weak glass canons or godly strong and just blast stuff. I wanted a rather more balanced one and ended up with someone that might be overpowered.
Ban Mido from Get Backers. Between being extremely proficient in casting illusions on other people with his eyes alone, heās also very tough and strong. How much of that is magic quasi-physics and how much is real is debatable but his grip strength is known to crush steel. More to the point his illusions are strong enough that the victim thinking theyāve died from a fire in an illusion will burn. More to the point they can affect the physical world as well.
Banās stupidly talented like that. Iām jealous.
Clouds are wanderer who are supposed to watch from afar and help out on occasion. Generally by killing those causing problems.
Kazuma Yagami from Kaze no Stigma. He does his own thing, on his own terms and wants people with the talent and ability to get stronger by honing their existing talents or cultivating new ones. Even to his own family. Not that heāll say as much and he had to be bribed to do so.
Heās shrewd and hard to take off guard so would not get killed by people in the capital taking advantage. Still would hate the idea of teaming up but would probably end up borrowing their proverbial couch on occasion.
Other things: Most of these characters are rather bitter and professionals. Which isnāt by chance as I wanted them to be able to survive the Capital and Xanxus. More to the point, most of them are more morally grey, although there are limits to it.
Further more, do you really think that Xanxus wouldnāt examine the teigu and try to re-create some of them?
Xan-xan the golden goose of quasi-teigu. Izzy needs sleep but sheās prowled through numerous wikis for a refresher course on some of these people.

4cr Plays - Yakuza Kiwami 2
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/91b778d9f1a661979b736e62c83911b3/tumblr_inline_pdx9poToFT1qfckum_540.jpg)
This is a great time to be a fan of the YakuzaĀ series. After years of iffy sales and the series seemingly being left for dead, SEGA has released - in short order - a wildly successful prequel, a remake of the first game, and the latest installment in the series.Ā
Now, just a few months later, SEGA has released Yakuza Kiwami 2Ā - a remake of the second game in the series. Redesigned from the ground up in the new Yakuza 6 engine, Kiwami 2 presents one of the most popular games in the series through new technology and with massively refined gameplay.Ā
Like many, I am a recent convert to the religion of Yakuza.Ā My first encounter with the series was Yakuza 0,Ā and I was hooked within minutes by its unique flavor of melodramatic - and so, so Japanese - crime drama. I have been eagerly waiting for Kiwami 2. Read on to see what I thought.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bb7feb2845faa497b3280d91f88140a3/tumblr_inline_pdx9qtQCTP1qfckum_540.jpg)
Yakuza Kiwami 2 picks up a year after the events of the first game. Our protagonist, Kazuma Kiryu, is trying to live a peaceful life with his adopted daughter Haruka. However, after the head of the Tojo family is assassinated, Kiryu is dragged back into his old life in a desperate attempt toĀ prevent the boiling tensions between Yakuza families from descending into all-out war. Kiryu is sent to the Sotenbori district of Osaka - into the heart of Omi Alliance territory - to strike a peace deal. However, Ryuiji Goda - the āDragon of Kansaiā and son of the current leader of the Omi Alliance - wants nothing more than a good fight. Kiryu will need to deal with mob-hunting police, blood-thirsty mobsters, crazed construction crews, cabaret girls, luchadors, and all of the endless threats awaiting him in Japanās most infamous red-light districts. Can he do it?
Well, of course he can. He is freaking Kazuma Kiryu. Letās talk about Kiryu.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ec0b81c7d63247eae20f6abe0e4dec80/tumblr_inline_pdx9piEmib1qfckum_540.jpg)
Kiryu is the coolest protagonist in gaming. He is unflappable. He is the calm, collected center of one hell of a storm. Everything around him is crazy - exaggerated to the Nth degree. The Yakuza series embodies the macho action movie. In a Yakuza game, people donāt have calm conversations. They scream, they shout, they tear off their shirts, and they beat each other with bicycles. Nobody is a normal person. They wear assless tights while trying to eat you, they think that bar bouncers are supposed to go out and fight gangs, they are besieged by underwear thieves.Ā
Yet, at the center is calm Kiryu. He is the straight man to the insanity, the one who isnāt all that surprised when a man in a diaper propositions him. Itās incredible, and you canāt help but grin the entire time at each and every thing that Kiryu has to deal with. One damn thing after another.Ā
If you havenāt played a Yakuza game, youāre in for a hell of a time. (If you are, you are still in for a hell of a time - you just know what to expect).Ā
The basic idea of Yakuza Kiwami 2 is that it is an open-world action game set in two red-light districts in Japan - Kamurocho, a take on Shinjukuās Kabukicho, and Sotenbori, a take on Osakaās Dotonbori. By exploring both cities, Kiryu can advance the central plot, uncover side missions, get into fights, and so, so much more.Ā
One of my favorite aspects of the series are theĀ āsubstoriesā - little side missions that you can stumble on as you explore the map. These stories offer some of the most memorable experiences of the series, as Kiryu solves the problems plaguing the residents of the two districts. I donāt want to name too many of them - spoilers arenāt much fun - but many of the items I mentioned above come from substories, and they *all* happen. I didnāt make any of those up. In the past, you had to use a guide or explore thoroughly to make sure you found everything. This time, however, you can purchase an ability that puts icons on the map for most of the substories. This helps out quite a bit in ensuring that you havenāt missed anything.
One of the most compelling elements of the Yakuza series is the sheer level of detail in the world presented by the developers. Iāve spent time in Kabukicho, the real-world analog of Kamurocho. Yakuzaās representation is stunningly spot-on. Buildings look identical. If you enter shops, you can make out the details of individual products on the shelves, and the level of visual detail is incredible. It helps that Yakuza includes a lot of licensed products. You can buy actual brands of whiskey and soda from Don Quixote - an actual chain of stores. The little details are even spot-on. For instance, the appearance of the Kamurocho Don Quixote has updated in each game to match how the store would appear in the real-world for the time period that the game takes place in. No other game has depicted Japan so accurately - in such loving detail. Just playing this game has made me want to book a trip back to Japan.Ā
Kamurocho and Sotenbori present a sprawling series of broadways, cramped alleyways, and dingy bars. Itās a world that is full of personality and easy to get lost in. This is true in the literal sense - it can be hard to find your way around (this is true to life) - but also in the figurative sense, given the sheer number of diversions that the world offers. You can have a few drinks at the bar. You can play darts, practice batting, and sing a few songs. You can play a few rounds of Virtua Fighter. If that gets old, you can attempt to learn Mahjong - though, despite SEGAās efforts to include tutorials for western audiences, Mahjong continues to elude me. Need to use a bathroom? Well, there are interactive urinals at the arcade where you can practice your aim. If the constant fights have left your health low, you can stop by a ramen joint or a takoyaki booth for a snack.Ā
There are a seemingly endless variety of minigames to indulge in, including both new additions and the return of old favorites. My favorite of the new ones is minigolf. Iāve put a decent amount of time into mastering each course. There is a trophy for trying every minigame, and trust me, it actually takes work to make sure you found them all.
In particular, there are two central - meaty - minigames to call out. The first puts Kiryu in charge of a cabaret club - where men come for fake dates with the women who work there. This particular game appeared previously in Yakuza 0, but has been enhanced here. The core idea is that you compete in a series of tournaments to see which club can earn the most money. To earn the money, you set a lineup of hostesses - whose health and stats you need to keep an eye on - and let them work. As guests enter, you match them with the most appropriate hostess. At times, you may have to step in to replace ice, swap an ash tray, or resolve a dispute. If guests are happy, they may stay longer and come back another time. As orders come in, you can throw parties - bringing in more sales. At the end of the night, everyone gets paid, you earn new fans, and you advance in the league rankings. Once you hit the top of a league, you can challenge the reigning club and move on to the next league. Itās a surprisingly addictive minigame, and comes with a lengthy storyline where Kiryu befriends the individual hostesses and navigates the twisty world of Japanese clubs.Ā
The other minigame is the Majima Construction Corporation - headed by Kiryuās rival and... obsessive stalker... Goro Majima. Despite the name, you arenāt actually building anything. Instead, this is a tower defense game where you need to prevent the destruction of your construction supplies. As the foreman, Kiryu must direct his workers to where they are needed, pumps up their spirit, and issues attack orders.. As they take down enemies, your workers level up and gain new abilities. Like with the cabaret club, there is an entire storyline devoted to the construction corporation.Ā
Speaking of Majima, Kiwami 2 has added new scenes where you play as Majima - filling in events that took place between games. After spending so much time in Majimaās shoes in Yakuza 0, itās really nice to spend some more time in his crazy head. These additions arenāt incredibly substantial, but are nice fanservice for long-time followers of the series.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4406eca1783d476487acec7943d5a000/tumblr_inline_pdx9x5pFYS1qfckum_540.jpg)
Fighting is - reasonably - a pretty major part of the series, and what youāll spend most of your time doing. Yakuza is, more-or-less, an action-RPG with random battles. Youāll be regularly attacked by roving mobs of goons, and you must beat them to move on. You fight by stringing together light attacks, heavy attacks, dodges, and blocks. Consecutive hits will build up a āheat gaugeā, which can be spent on brutal takedowns. You can also trigger a special powered-up mode where all attacks consumeĀ āheatā, but are much more powerful.Ā
Kiwami 2 carries forward the changes made to the fighting in Yakuza 6. I was a fan of how combat was streamlined, and how the new physics felt. Kiwami refines the combat a little by adding in new heat actions and a revised weapon system. Now, Kiryu can carry three weapons into combat and freely switch between them. In some cases, you can also pocket weapons obtained by disarming enemies to use later on.Ā
Every action you take in Yakuza, whether fighting, eating, or singing, earns you experience. Experience points come in five different categories, and can be spent in a variety of ways. You can put points into your basic stats, like health, strength, agility, and your heat gauge. You can also purchase new combat skills and heat moves. Finally, you can purchase general abilities, like experience boosts, increased stomach capacity (eating more food nets you more experience), or the ability to run further.
As the second game to use the new engine, Kiwami 2 presents a much smoother technical experience than Yakuza 6. Iāve been playing on a PS4 Pro, where the game runs at 1080p with a locked 30FPS framerate. I havenāt run into issues. Yakuza 6 was a bit choppy on the regular PS4, but impressions suggest that Kiwami 2 is much more stable.Ā
As you can probably tell, Iāve had a blast with my time in Yakuza Kiwami 2, and I canāt wait to put a couple dozen more hours into it. I feel deeply in love with the series with Yakuza 0, and have been on board since. Yakuza Kiwami 2 might be my favorite in the series yet - or, at least, it comes close to Yakuza 0. The technical upgrades, seemingly endless variety of minigames, some of the best substories yet, and a strong central plot put Kiwami 2 near the top of the series. Whether you are coming to the game as a newcomer or a series veteran, you canāt really go wrong with this game. I canāt recommend it enough.
