a/n: I started writing this at like 2am one night when I was in my chan feels, then homeboy played Michael Bublé during his last vlive and I took that as my sign to finish it lol. I also highkey recommend the song mentioned in this it totally didn’t make me cry while I was editing this noooo not at all 🖤

You pace back and forth in front of your front door, chewing on your bottom lip, occasionally checking the time on your phone as you impatiently wait for the mail to come. You try to distract yourself by scrolling through instagram and literally every other app you have, but your brain is too focused on one thing: an acceptance letter.

It’s a sunny but chilly Friday of what normally would be a regular week. This week, however, is the week universities send out their acceptance letters, and the first four days were complete agony of not hearing anything back. You had applied to one of the most prestigious graduate schools in the country, one that’s been around for hundreds of years and for some reason didn’t think it needed to upgrade its acceptance announcements with the current century. Honestly, you didn’t know people still sent actual letters anymore, but there’s something a bit comforting in receiving a physical copy of something that could be so important and life-changing to you. You had worked your ass off the day you started your courses in college, ultimately graduating two years ago with high honors and glowing recommendations from a few of your professors. Since then, you managed to score two internships in the film industry, all while working a part-time job and somehow not going completely insane. You did everything you could for a spot in that university’s graduate program, but despite everyone telling you that your acceptance is a sure thing, you still were insanely nervous.

To be honest, you don’t need to go to graduate school. Your bachelor’s degree and internships qualify you for any job you wanted in the industry, let alone your work ethic and resume you’ve built over the past two years. But you love learning, and this is the change to to meet new people and gain new experiences that you could only get from a graduate program. And sure, you didn’t need to apply to such a distinguished school, but the perfectionist inside you wanted the best of the best, and nearly all of your professors and friends encouraged you to apply, so how could you not?

After a few minutes of constant pacing, you check your phone again and let out a shaky breath, your nerves nowhere near being calmed. You sit yourself down in from of the door’s little mail slot and just stare.

“Baby,” Chan chuckles, watching you from the couch as he works on his laptop. “The mail isn’t gonna get here any faster if you stare at the door.”

“I know, but who knows, maybe the mailman will be able to sense my intense gaze from wherever he is and speed over.”

You hear your boyfriend rise from the couch and walk to where you’re planted, sitting behind you and wrapping his arms around your waist. “You worked hard for this, Y/N, they’d be crazy not to accept you. I’m sure you got in.”

You hum in appreciation and lean back against chest, smiling as he tenderly kisses your temple. Chan, being the actual angel that he is, was one of the main reasons you had managed not to completely lose your shit throughout the entire application process and waiting period. You two know each other like the back of your hand; anytime one of you (mostly you) would get stressed out over something, the other would always be there to help. But for Chan, it’s like he has a sixth sense for knowing when you’re going through it, because he’d be by your side within an instant. He was, and still is, your voice of reason, your comfort, your everything.

He takes your hands in his, gently rubbing circles against your palms. “Don’t worry, I’m sure the letter will arrive any moment now.”

The two of you stare at the door for a few minutes, before you can’t help but check the time on your phone again, and you release a worried sigh, beginning to impatiently tap on the floor. As if he could read your mind, Chan pulls you tighter against his body and snuggles his face into the curve of your neck. “Just relax Y/N.”

Once you manage to calm your nerves down again, he slowly gets up, eliciting a small whimper from you from the loss of his warmth, which only gets you a chuckle in response. “I’m gonna make some hot chocolate, want any?”

“Yes please, with a lot-“

“Of marshmallows, I know,” he laughs as he makes his way to the kitchen.

You smile, resting your chin on your hand, and turn your attention back to the mail slot. You wait as patiently as you possibly can for another five minutes, before you hear a crash from the kitchen. “You okay?” you call out, not taking your eyes off the door.

“Yeah, I’m fine… Just wondering, where do you keep your broom?”

“Christopher Bang, what did you-“

At that exact moment, the mail slot opens and you’re greeted with piles of letters and papers falling into your lap. With shaky hands, you sort through the mail, tossing a couple bills, a magazine, and some weird catalog from a brand you’ve never even heard of aside before finally digging up the letter you’ve been waiting for. You can feel your heart beating out of your chest as you frantically try to rip it open without giving yourself a paper cut.

“Was that the mail? Did it come?” Chan calls out from the kitchen, but you’re too in your own head to put words together to form an answer. 

You finally manage to open up the envelope, your hands trembling as you pull out the letter and slowly unfold it. All the words just seem to blur together, except the ones that catch your attention:

In a matter of seconds, you feel yourself spiral. Your breathing begins to become more shallow and quicken, while your mind begins to race a million miles per second, trying to make of what you just read. 

What are you gonna do now? 

All that work, for what, nothing? 

Did you do something wrong?

Is there something wrong with you?

Are you just not good enough? 

A tear falls on the paper you’re holding, smearing the ink stating your failure, but you didn’t even realize you were crying until then. You furiously wipe them away with the back of your hand, but no matter what you do, tears just keep falling, and you can feel yourself beginning to hyperventilate, you whole body trembling. You know this isn’t the end of the world, but then why did it feel like it is?

“Y/N? Did you hear-“

You turn to your boyfriend, and the look on your face must have said it all, because the next thing you know, Chan is engulfing you in a warm hug, stroking your hair as you start to sob into his chest. “Hey, everything’s going to be okay. Y/N, please listen to me. Everything’s going to be okay. We’ll figure something out.” He kisses the top of your head and continues to let you cry as he hugs you close.

It seems like eternity, but you manage to calm yourself down a bit, clinging to Chan’s hoodie while listening to his steady heartbeat, and you finally bring yourself to look up at him. “I just… I just really thought I was gonna get in,” you say quietly, your eyes welling up again.

He gingerly wipes away the tears from your cheeks and offers you a sympathetic smile. “I know, baby, I know. I’m so sorry.” He pulls you back into a hug, rubbing your back to help ease the knots that had build up there from the stress. “Fuck them,” he mumbles against your hair. “It’s their loss for not choosing one of the smartest and hardest working people on this planet.”

You let out a weak laugh in response, grateful for his attempt to crack some jokes to ease the tension. You nuzzle your face into the crook of his neck, closing you eyes to try to get rid of the stress that lingered in your head.

“I have an idea,” Chan suddenly says, breaking the comfortable silence that had fallen in the room. He gently pulls away from you, and you watch in confusion as he makes his way across the living room, taking his phone out from his pocket and placing it on the coffee table. 

The next thing you know, Michael Bublé’s “Hold On” fills the room, and a small smile forms on your lips as Chan turns to you, offering his hand. You take it, and he pulls up from where you’re seated and close to his strong body, putting his hands on your waist as your arms instinctively wrap around his neck. Slowly, the two of you begin to sway to the music, and you feel any remaining sadness and tension drain from your body as you dance with your boyfriend, and your smile begins to grow.

“So hold on to me tight, hold on, I promise it will be alright,” Chan’s smooth voice sings along with the music, and he’s looking at you with so much adoration, you can feel your heart swell. “Cause it’s you and me together, and baby all we’ve got is time. So hold on to me, hold on to me tonight,” he continues to serenade you, and you can’t help but giggle, causing him to start giggling as well.

You rest your head on his shoulder, releasing a sigh in content as he presses a soft kiss to your forehead. “I love you Chan.”

“I love you too.”

JUMIN:

* His first flash came unexpectedly-he was at school, another boring class dragging on and on, the view of Jihyun’s messy mint hair more interesting than whatever historical fact the teacher was rambling on about, when his eyes blinked, and suddenly the scenery changed, odd and unfamiliar, his heart stammering in his chest at the sight

* He was still seated, still a desk in front of him-but gone was the pricey mahogany of his private school’s classroom, instead a different, white-painted desk beneath his hands-his black pencilcase replaced with a white one, a cat-face key-chain dangling from its zipper, fingers-were they his own? No, they were far too different, but they were fumbling with the cat ears, flicking one between their thumb and index finger-

* He heard a voice calling out, an unfamiliar voice, an even more unfamiliar name-but before he could even begin to comprehend what was happening the scenery was gone, replaced with the view of his very furstrated teacher standing over his own, normal desk, Jihyun’s worried gaze turned to him with furrowed brows.

* Without bothering to give anyone an explanation, Jumin simply excused himself, leaving class early. 

* He didn’t speak of it to anyone until it happened again and again-as he caught more and more glimpses of this persons’ life, how he’d see their hands, fumbling with their phone in bed, looking up one thing after another online, or he’d see them in an alleway, see their knees as they bent down to coo at a nearby stray cat.

* The only person he eventually confided in was Jihyun-he told him his genuine concern, how he was afraid he was going mad, how else could he explain it all?

* Jihyun merely shook his head, a small smile on his lips-Jumin couldn’t be sure, but something about that smile didn’t feel right, as if it didn’t belong on his friend’s face. 

* “You’re one of the lucky ones Jumin. That’s your soulmate.”

* Jumin...didn’t know what to do with that information. So he very simply didn’t do anything. What use were these glimpses into a strangers life to him? And what use was it to them, to see glimpses of his own life?

* He became more self conscious, worried everytime he’d be caught doing something wrong, something inapprorpiate-he’d keep his interaction with his father and the random women that came home with him to a minimum, worried his soulmate would see-but why was he worried? Why should he care if they saw or not?

* Yet he carried on this way for years-he’d smile everytime he saw anything cat-related, remembering the flashes of his soulmate’s life, their love for cats; they’d recently adopted a black cat, a curious little thing that spent most of its time on their lap, their hands scratching behind its ears, or perched atop their shoulder like a parrot, as they’d turn their head to face it, the cat happily chirping at them in return.

* That’s the very first thought he had when Rika had presented him Elizabeth the 3d. Had his soulmate seen her? Had they gotten the same rush of excitement he did as she blinked up at him, as she used his lap as a pillow?

* He wondered what it’d be like if their two cats met, a black and white mess in a shared home, tails intertwined as they sat together, hand in hand, watching them-

* Shaking his head, he tried to put that thought out of his mind. After all, he had no plans to meet them. How could he? 

* ...how could he accept he’d been falling in love with someone he’d never even met?

YOOSUNG:

* His first glimpse into their life was....rather embarassing.

* He’d just come home from school, exhausted as exam season was right around the corner, college applications haunting his every waking moment-the only thing he wanted was to hop into the shower come out as a full-time employee of a high-paying firm.

* And he did-almost that, letting the water wash the stress of the day away, happily humming a song as he lathered shampoo into his hair, shutting his eyes to avoid any stray soap reaching them-

* -only to find an unfamiliar scene greet him as soon as he opened them again?! 

* He’d been in his shower, at his home-that much he was sure of so how-how was he outside right now?! How was he sitting in a park, a sandwich in his hands, and-there were people around him?! But he’s naked!

* He tried to cover up his body but his hands just wouldn’t follow, but as he looked closer-those hands were...manicured? Wait, he’s pretty sure he doesn’t have pastel pink coloured nails, unless his sister pranked him again...

* Oh! Oh, this is his soulmate!

* His initial shriek of fear became an excited scream, his eyes trying to soak up everything they could about his soulmate, ignoring his current predicament as he took in the faces of their friends, the colour of their jeans, even the contents of their sandwich, what they liked and disliked, anything and everything about this scene-

* Only to remember his position as soon as the glimpse into their life faded, his own body greeting him once again, the water stinging his eyes as he looked around manically.

* “Wait” he mumbled, eyes wide, “if I saw into their life....and they can see into mine...”

* His poor mom couldn’t ever understand what the context behind her son yelling ‘DID THEY SEE MY D*CK?!” could be as his voice echoed through the entire house.

* Throughout the years he tried to find out as much info as he could about his soulmate-he found out they loved coffee, that they didn’t really like sweet things, since he saw them refusing sugary treats from their friends more than once, unless they were on a diet-which he’d be sure to tell them they didn’t need to unless they absoloutely wanted to! He doesn’t want his soulmate to think they’re not beautiful, he huffed, all the little things that made up their personality, little quirks and habits that made him fall more and more in love.

* He hoped they could see him too, could see things about him they liked-but as he looked around at his bleak life, the only light illuminating his room being the computer screen...he highly doubted it.

* Rika’s death tore him apart, and he knew his soulmate must’ve caught more than a small glimpse of his breakdown, the countless nights he spend crying, how he’d nod off in school because he spent his nights staring at the ceeling, a million thoughts racing through his mind.

* Yet somehow he knew-he knew his soulmate wasn’t the type of person to judge him for it.

* The fated day came when, during his orientation day at university, another flash came to him-a glimpse into his soulmate’s world...

* Only...they were looking at the same view as him? It was the same university, the exact same area-they must be in the orientation tour too!

* And-he saw himself, a blonde bob of hair a few meters ahead of them, could see his own shoulders tense in excitement, how his feet stopped his fast-paced walk-as did theirs, their gaze solely focused on him.

* He turned in a flash, scanning the faces of his fellow colleagues-until he found them. 

* He didn’t have to know what they looked like to know this was his soulmate. The way their eyes widened as they saw him, how their lips turned into a soft smile, their hands coming up to their reddened cheeks-he knew.

* Before his confidence could waver, he walked to them, gait shaky, extending a hand to them.

* “It’s...it’s nice to finally meet you.” he said.

* They looked up to him, their eyes clear, holding so much emotion-Yoosung couldn’t wait to begin to untangle this Ariadne’s tangle in their gaze.

* “I-you too” they stumbled over their words, “It’s funny I-I didn’t expect we’d meet like this-I don’t know you yet I feel like-like I’ve known you for a lifetime.”

* Yoosung laughed, clenching their hand tight as they shook his, remaining quiet-what was there even to say?

* His soulmate had nailed it right on the head.

* “Yeah” he said, “yeah, me too-but I can’t wait to spend another lifetime getting to know you”

A Thousand to One, A Million to Two (part one)

[Part 1: I’m the One Who’s Selling You Out]

the letter itself hadn’t scared jane at all. 

when it was sealed in its pristine white envelope, addressed from her landlord, it wasn’t threatening at all.

it’s when she opened it that things go south. 

due to a change in the housing market, jane’s landlord was increasing her rent by two hundred pounds a month. 

two hundred pounds, jane thinks, can’t possibly be that hard to save. she trims her budget a bit - buying slightly less food, spending less on herself, and most importantly making sure katherine doesn’t notice. 

but this slimming isn’t enough. 

the due date is creeping closer and jane is still short on the check. she knows that kat would contribute wholeheartedly, but jane can’t bring herself to ask. katherine deserves to save her money, put it away for if she ever wanted to travel or finance an education. jane wouldn’t impede on that. 

so she decides to try and get a second job. 

she sends out some feeler applications, promising kat she would work mornings.

“i’ll get out early and be back before you even wake up, love,” she tells the nervous katherine. “you won’t even notice i’m gone.”

to jane’s relief, within a week she’s been offered an interview for a part-time job. it’s nothing too well-paid but it’ll boost her income just enough to be able to afford the rent, and at this point jane isn’t too picky. it’s a job at a warehouse, preparing online orders for delivery and helping the delivery drivers load their vans, and they offered her an early morning shift, about 5am to 10am.

katherine is still hesitant about the idea, but jane feels a weight lift from her shoulders. they wouldn’t have to change house, jane would arrive home just as katherine would be waking up anyway, and everything seemed to be getting back on track.

her first day altogether isn’t terrible. she’s put in charge of stock and inventory, finding what needs to be shipped out and making sure they has an accurate count of what they do and don’t have. 

she returns home just as katherine is waking up, and she’s immensely relieved to see jane in one piece, not all that worse for the wear. 

day two, jane finds, is drastically different. 

she’s no longer under the warehouse manager’s wing, and things go strange. 

the other workers smoke in the warehouse, horrible combinations of tobacco and marijuana, even though it’s explicitly against the rules.

jane asks one of the linemen about it, and he simply blows his smoke in her face and roughly tells her, “you snitch and this job’ll get a hell of a lot harder for ya, darlin’.”

after that, jane resolves to keep her head down and get her work done without engaging with the other workers, if possible.

most of the other workers were men, and jane was surprised how little men had apparently changed in the last 500 years. for example, some of them seemed to consider spitting on the floor a totally acceptable practice, and they had no qualms in pushing jane out of the way if they wanted to get past her.

there was one other woman in her immediate working area, a middle aged woman with close-cropped hair and a tired expression. jane learns that her name is Sara and she works here in the mornings, before leaving at half past 8 to take her kids to school and going straight to her second job at a supermarket. she’s relieved to have another woman’s company during her shift, and even though sara doesn’t talk much it’s clear she appreciates jane’s presence too.

by the end of her first week of working in the warehouse and doing eight shows, jane is dead tired. she forgoes the usual end-of-week-drinks in favor of getting a few extra hours of much needed rest. 

on the third day of her second week, one of the line workers, clive, comes in raging. clive was built like a weightlifter, with massive muscles and standing a full foot taller than jane herself. 

jane tucks herself in one of the corners of their unit, counting computer parts and telly remotes.

“we need seven webcams!” jane hears clive yell. she sets down her clipboard and counts out seven cameras and carries them over to where he is waiting with the box. 

only three steps away, she hits a patch of water no one had bothered to clean up and stumbles. one of the cameras rolls out of her hands and hits the floor, the lens breaking. 

“oi, seymour!” he yells, preventing her from hurrying back to pick up another. “clean that up.”

she does as told without any argument. she kneels down and starts cleaning up the remnants of the camera’s lens when a piece of glass slices her across the ring finger and she hisses in pain. 

“clean it up,” clive commands again, ignoring the blood pooling on her hand. 

when she’s finally done, her entire finger is red and she has tears in her eyes from the pain. 

“back to work,” he gruffs. “don’t go lame on me now, seymour. you need this job, remember that.”

jane tries her best to get back to work but her finger is still dripping blood. she still has an hour left of her shift and, as sara has already left, she has to do it alone. she pulls her handkerchief from her pocket and ties it around her finger, wincing in pain as she puts pressure on the wound. it’ll have to do, she decides, as Clive is already barking out orders to bring him another webcam to replace the one she broke.

by the time jane gets home that day, her handkerchief is covered in blood and she feels exhausted. as she unlocks the door she hears katherine making her way sleepily down the stairs, and in a panic jane shoved her injured hand into her coat pocket and fixes a smile on her face.

“morning, love,” she greets gently. katherine, still half asleep, leans against her in a half hug. jane kisses her forehead. “how did you sleep?”

katherine murmurs something along the lines of ‘good,’, then gives a tiny smile as jane kisses her head again. “do you think you can manage breakfast for yourself, love?” jane asks. “i really need a shower before we go do the matinee.”

katherine scrunches her nose a bit then agrees, saying something about toast. she disappears into the kitchen and jane heads upstairs.

as she undresses the wound, she bites her lip harshly to not cry out in pain or disgust. she’s still bleeding quite a bit, and, frankly, should go to the clinic and get stitches or something, but can’t bring herself to worry katherine. so she showers, ignoring the fierce stinging in her finger, then wraps the still bleeding slash in three neutral colored bandages.

she manages to keep her hand surreptitiously hidden throughout the morning, all the way until they’re getting ready for the matinee at the theatre. jane is just pinning her hair into place when one of the bandages snags on a hairpin, ripping it away from the cut and making jane gasp in pain.

katherine turns suddenly from where she was doing her makeup at the sound, eyes wide with concern.

“you okay, mum?” she asks.

jane forces her grimace into a half smile. “just a snarl in my hair, love,” she calls back. she looks down and sees the blood beginning to pool around the base of her finger again. “i’ll be right back, kat, don’t worry.”

katherine can’t help the slight anxiety she feels, but she reassures herself jane is fine, it’s all fine. 

jane holds herself together until she gets to the bathroom, then lets out a pained gasp as she removes the rest of the bandages. she’s bleeding profusely, the wound having not even healed a little since the morning. she sighs and bites her lip as she runs her hand under the sink, washing out the wound painfully. 

there are only a few bandages left in the first aid kit under the sink, but they’ll have to do as she forces the stiff pieces to meld around her finger tightly, hoping to prevent another incident.

the bandages manage to hold while jane finishes getting ready, and through the first half of the show jane thinks she might get away with it. between the shows she could pop to the doctors as quick as she could and get an emergency appointment to get stitched up, and then be back in time for the evening show without any worry.

it’s in the middle of Get Down that jane starts to notice the blood beginning to seep through the bandage. instantly she starts to panic, not least because katherine’s song was next and the choreography required her to put her hands on katherine. what if katherine noticed the blood? and jane couldn’t rightly put her blood-soaked bandage against katherine’s skin, it would be incredibly unhygienic.

her mind is so busy fretting along these lines that she doesn’t seem to recognise the more pressing issue of losing more and more blood out of her cut every second, and although it may not have seemed much she had been bleeding almost solidly for seven hours.

she feels herself growing lightheaded during the transition to katherine’s song, to the point where she can’t even react when katherine ‘mocks’ her. she gnaws on the inside of her cheek, forcing herself to stay conscious. 

katherine’s song starts with the familiar drum beat, and jane does everything in her power to avoid using her damaged hand. she’s so focused that she doesn’t recognize where they are in the song, her feet are on autopilot and her facial expression excruciatingly neutral. 

black spots flicker in front of her eyes during the climax of the song, and jane finds herself struggling to keep her eyes open.

she manages to stumble offstage on cue with the rest of the queens, leaving katherine alone on the stage to finish the song. jane places her uninjured hand against the wall to steady herself, scrunching her eyes closed and then opening them again in an attempt to stop them from hurting.

onstage, katherine takes a brief moment to enjoy the applause but part of her mind is taken up by worry for jane. katherine had noticed the blank expression on her face, had tried to make eye contact with her, only for jane to ignore her gaze completely. what’s even more worrying, however, is how jane doesn’t follow the other queens back onstage.

the dialogue begins as normal, but all of the queens share slightly worried, barely perceptible looks of concern as to jane's disappearance. 

just as they all begin to argue, jane finds her way back to the stage. 

"well it looks like jane finally figured out where the stage was," boleyn ad libs a zinging joke. the audience is so distracted by uproarious laughter, the other queens all give jane a concerned look. she doesn't give any answer, but does speak through her mic. "well, anne," she says, "at least i know how to keep my head attached to my body." 

the audience loses their minds. jane sees the confused and slightly hurt look in anne's eyes, but the pain in her hand and the fuzziness in her head keeps her from fully responding.

cleves tries to keep the show moving and introduce parr’s song, and jane spends the next few minutes trying to keep upright. the rest of the show is a struggle, and the second the final beat of Six ends jane breathes a sigh of relief. she needs to do something about her hand, she knows that, but to rush off before the end of the megamix would make katherine undoubtedly more worried than she already was, so instead jane practically counts down the seconds. only about two and a half minutes, and then jane could get help for her hand. that’s all she had to last.

she moves on autopilot through the rest of the song. her voice may have cracked during her solo, but she couldn’t say for sure.

as soon as the megamix ended, she danced her way off stage and beat it to the dressing room. she sloppily changed, hands shaking, before grabbing the car keys and practically bursting out the stage door to avoid any fans and, more importantly, katherine. 

she drives probably far too fast to get to the hospital, knowing she’s too far gone for just her normal physician. 

“stitches, please,” is all she can say to a nurse on duty.

jane gets brought into a waiting room to wait for someone to become available to stitch up her cut. the wait isn’t all that long considering, but her headache is steadily increasing and every second that ticks by is one that will make katherine worry, she knows. she bounces her leg restlessly, sending endless glances at the time on her phone and noticing that she had no signal in the hospital; if katherine or anyone else tried to contact her it wouldn’t go through.

finally a nurse calls her name and shows her to a bed. he talks to her while he sterilises the wound. the conversation is friendly enough, but jane supposes he’s really checking if jane is cognitive enough after losing all that blood.

he frowns a bit at how spacey jane is. “you really should have come in earlier,” he says. 

“didn’t have a chance,” she answers. 

he gives another frown but begins to stitch her up. 

another twenty minutes pass before she’s free, after the doctor closed the wound and bandages it, then all but forced her to have a cookie and some orange juice like she had just donated blood. 

as soon as she steps outside her phone explodes. messages and missed calls from all the queens appear at once, and ‘my PERFECT daughter <3’ had sent her nearly thirty messages and called her seven times. 

“please talk to me, mum,” the most recent text reads. “you’re scaring me.”

she walks to the car while waiting for the phone to connect.

“kitty-kat,” she says soothingly as the call patches through, and she hears katherine’s panicked, albeit slightly relieved breathing. “it’s mum. i’m here, love. i’m okay.”

“oh, thank god,” jane hears her mumble, before katherine’s voice gets slightly louder. “where are you?”

“i’m on my way back to the theatre,” jane says, avoiding the question. “don’t worry, love, everything’s okay.”

there’s a moment of silence on the other end of the line before jane hears a choked noise.

“i was so worried.” katherine’s voice is thick with the built up stress and emotion of the past hour.

jane hushes her gently. “i know, love, i’m sorry. but i’m coming back now, okay?”

katherine mumbles out an ‘okay’ and jane feels secure enough to hang up. 

she’s pulling into the theater lot when she gets another phone call. 

clive. 

she answers it and his voice immediately begins to bark at her through the receiver. “oi, seymour, we need you down here now.”

“i can’t,” she says, “i’m at my second job.”

“that little stage show? please,” he gruffs, “get down here to the real job or don’t bother coming in tomorrow.” 

he hangs up. 

jane resists the urge to throw her phone and instead calls grace. 

“can you cover for me?”

“of course, jane, what’s up?”

she sighs. “something came up. just tell the others i’m not feeling well, alright?”

grace gives an awkward sigh on the other end of the phone, then after a brief pause she says, somewhat apologetically: “katherine’s not gonna buy that.”

“i know,” jane closes her eyes briefly. “i’m sorry. i have to go, though.”

“i’ll give vicki a heads up in case she has to go on as well,” grace says, and then her voice gets a tiny bit more serious. “jane, i know it’s none of my business, but i hope whatever it is gets sorted soon.”

jane gives a half smile. “thanks, grace. i’ve got to go now.” after a quick goodbye jane hangs up and puts her phone down, and begins pulling back out of the car park. it takes her just under fifteen minutes to get to work, and she runs in as fast as she can. clive was not a patient man and she didn’t want to keep him waiting any more.

“look who decided to show up,” he grunts with a twisted smile. 

“what do you need me to do?” she asks, hoping whatever this is is well worth her missing the show, and katherine. 

“massive outhaul to a third party tonight, we need all hands on deck.” 

she holds up her clipboard. “where am i going?”

he laughs again. “not that kind of outhaul, sweetheart.”

she looks at him, confused, before he jabs a thumb over his shoulder. 

jane leans around him to see several of the other line men carrying paper and duct tape wrapped squares. 

“is that...” she trails off.

“cocaine? yes.” he gives a devilish smirk. “new buyer tonight.” he takes her clipboard and pen. “go help them out, darlin.”

jane stares at him, open-mouthed. “you can’t be serious!”

“serious as a heart attack, sweetheart,” clive grins.

“but... but that can’t be legal,” she protests, and clive’s expression rapidly falls.

“listen, seymour,” he growls. “you let me worry about that, while /you/ get on with the job you’re being paid to do, or you’ll find that you don’t have a job any more. understand me?”

jane’s gaze darts from clive to the piles of wrapped parcels.

she know she needs this job, she can’t let her and kat lose the house. so she forces herself to lug the parcels around with the other linemen, bringing what must have been ten kilos out to the delivery van driver. 

“seymour! you’re going with,” clive commands. 

her jaw falls open. “no way, i won’t.”

he glares. “we need someone unintimidating to help deliver.”

“i won’t go,” she protests fiercely. 

“you will or you’re fired.”

part of jane wants to shut up and do what she’s told, but another part of her knows that if she gets caught then that’s that. prison, most likely, and katherine would be left on her own, and she definitely wouldn’t be able to cope with jane being in prison. she can’t bring herself to do this, not even for the money. she would do anything to keep katherine safe, and that’s why she couldn’t do this.

“no,” she stands her ground. “i’m not going.”

clive stares at her for several seconds. “fine,” he grunts. “sara, you go instead.”

sara’s eyes widen. “me?” she asks. “but- but I need to pick my sons up from school soon, they’re too young to get the bus by themselves.”

“well, /jane/ has decided she’s too good for this job, so it’s down to you,” clive sneers.

jane panics mentally. she couldn’t do that to sara, with two boys even younger than katherine. she looks around wildly. 

“what about nick?” she cries out. “he’s ‘unintimidating’.”

nick was a scraggly, redheaded guy around clive’s age but looked far younger.

clive contemplates for a long few seconds, then agrees.

nick and the delivery driver, as well as a few others, take off. 

“looks like it’s just us now, ladies,” clive says with a shark like smile.

Chapter 8

Remy saw Virgil a total of twice before Monday morning.

The first was when he came in at 2 in the morning to find his new roommate sitting on the counter eating a bowl of cereal.

The second was just before he left on Sunday. He’d been running late and had rushed into the kitchen to find Virgil feeding Chai. The little rascal had rubbed up against his leg and purred as loud as she could.

As soon as his alarm went off on Monday, Remy groaned. Yeah, he loved his job, but some days you just wanted more than a day off.

“I guess that’s what I’m training Virgil for.” He mumbled to himself as he left his bedroom.

“What?”

A girlish shriek rang out through the apartment. Remy glared at his roommate, who was chuckling from the shadows. “You! How do you do that?”

“I’m just quiet, Rem. Maybe you should try it sometime.” Virgil joked as he stepped into the light. Dark eyeshadow was spread expertly beneath his eyes, somehow making the backwards application stylish. “Did you want me to feed Chai again?”

“If you would, apparently she likes you more than her own father.” Remy barely heard Virgil’s soft laugh as he stepped into the bathroom.

After speeding through his morning routine, Remy threw on a pink bomber and grabbed his keys. “Ready to learn, young padawan?”

Virgil gave him an unimpressed look before heading out the door.

The two walked in silence on the way to the shop, appreciating the quiet of early morning. The sun’s rays were slowly lighting up the sky and a gentle breeze blew through the city.

The complete opposite of the chaos they’d be facing in the next hour.

As soon as they entered the shop, Patton darted out from the kitchen. He wrapped Virgil in a hug. “I hope you decide to work here! If it’s slow, you can help me with pastries while Logan does paperwork and then we can catch up!”

“We’ll see how it goes.” Virgil smiled. “But I need to be trained first.”

“Right!” Patton released his hold and took a few steps back. “Have fun!”

Virgil shook his head as Patton headed back to the kitchen. “He really hasn’t changed since high school.”

“Come on, let me show you how everything works.”

It wasn’t a surprise when Virgil picked up on everything rather quickly. It’s not as though the machines were hard to use. The drinks took longer than usual because Remy insisted on perfection.

“Don’t be afraid to mix things up a little.” Remy said as he worked on a new recipe he’d been trying. “Sometimes the new things I make suck. We just throw them away and never speak of them again.”

Virgil bit his lip, staring at the different syrups. Remy recognized the look on his face and grinned. “Go wild.”

Moving slowly, Virgil started on a drink. Remy watched as he put a few different syrups together and stirred it vigorously to make sure they were blended fully. When he was done he held it out. “You try.”

“Nu-uh, creator always tries it first.” He pushed the drink back towards Virgil. “That’s how I’ve gotten out of trying some of Logan’s worse creations.”

“Hey!”

“Logan, I say this with all the love in the world, but you are not good at making new drinks!”

There was a beat of silence before Remy heard whispering coming from the kitchen. He rolled his eyes. “Unless you want to watch those two make out, stay out of the kitchen when Logan’s upset.”

“Noted.” Virgil sipped his drink, his eyes lighting up as the flavor hit. “I didn’t think that would work honestly.”

“Alright gurl, hand it over.” Grabbing the cup, Remy took a long drink. The butterscotch flavor burst on his tongue, so sweet it almost made him choke. He started coughing, handing the drink back. “That’s a good one for our sweet tooths.”

“I’m guessing you prefer a more bitter taste?” Virgil grabbed a pen out of the cup and starting writing down the recipe on some spare receipt paper.

“Bitter coffee, sweet kisses.” Remy headed to the register as Logan emerged from the kitchen to unlock the door. “Look alive, kid.”

Virgil rolled his eyes, stuffing the recipe in his back pocket. “I’m only a few years younger than you.”

“Shut up, you’re like twelve.” The nasally tone in Remy’s voice made Virgil burst out laughing, just as their first customer came up.

“What?” Remy asked, noting the black mug in his hands.

“Can I get a PSL?” She asked, a grin on her face.

A heavy sigh left Remy’s mouth as he punched in her order. “Basic white girl - fall edition, coming right up.”

Midway through the morning, Remy let Virgil take a few orders. He grinned as Virgil upped the sass, offending an older woman enough that she left the shop.

The kid was a natural.

As the morning quieted down, Remy clapped Virgil on the shoulder. “What do you think of the job?”

“I think it’s perfect.” Virgil’s eyes twinkled as he finished up a drink and handed it out. “Did you see that lady’s face?”

Remy leaned his hip against the counter. “You’re really good at this, Virgil. We’d all love to have you here.”

“That depends on if he gets my drink right.”

The two baristas turned to find Roman in front of the register. Virgil raised an eyebrow. “And what would that be, Princey? Wait, let me guess. Something with six different syrups that would take any lesser person over ten minutes to make?”

“I’ll take a Chai Latte. Add salted caramel, french vanilla, and praline syrup. Oh, and a generous swirl of whipped cream on top.” Roman rattled off, watching Virgil enter his order. “Hmm...and one of those delicious cinnamon rolls.”

“Wow, not nearly as complicated as I thought. Are you sure you don’t want to add a few more syrups? Do you want me to make sure it’s not too hot? Wouldn’t want to burn your pretty mouth.” Virgil quipped, starting on the drink.

���Actually, that sounds great.” Roman leaned against the counter. “After all, my pretty mouth needs to be ready for its...multiple uses.”

Remy, who’d been watching the two like a tennis match, smirked as Virgil turned red. He knew exactly what was running through his mind.

Without another word, Virgil finished the drink and handed it over. Roman took it, making sure to graze their fingertips together. He took a sip, not breaking eye contact with Virgil. “Mmmm, that’s really good.”

The bell on the door chimed as Emile walked in. Remy pulled on Virgil’s apron, untying the back. “We’re good for the day, you can go.”

“There’s always room for more.” Roman purred before he picked up his drink and headed to a couple’s table.

Virgil blushed even harder, opting to dart into the kitchen instead. Remy saw Roman track the movement with his eyes and smirk.

“What was that about?” Emile asked as he handed Remy his usual mug.

Remy started on a hot chocolate. “Roman obviously likes Virgil. I think Virgil likes him back, but the poor guy hasn’t had much experience so he doesn’t really know what to do. Hopefully Patton can talk some sense into him.”

“Rem? Can you come in here a second?”

Virgil walked out from the kitchen, pointedly ignoring the ogling from the corner table. Patton was right on his heels, a pleading look on his face.

“Sure. Virgil, can you finish off Emile’s hot chocolate? It just needs whipped cream.”

When Remy reached Patton, the baker whispered, “Virgil said something about being too gay to work here?”

“Roman was flirting with him and laying it on a bit thick if I do say so myself.” Remy watched as Roman headed back to the counter and batted his eyelashes at Virgil.

The next few seconds seemed to go by in slow motion. Remy had no clue what Roman had said, but it startled Virgil enough that he dropped the mug in his hands. It fell to the floor and shattered into a million pieces, sending hot chocolate everywhere.

Emile let out a gasp, hands flying to his mouth. “Oh, goodness! Are you alright? Can I help?”

“Virge -”

Virgil darted out of the shop. Patton took off after him, brushing past a shocked Roman.

Grabbing a broom, Remy handed it out. “You helped cause the mess, you get to help clean it up, Ro.”

“That’s fair.”

The two got to work cleaning up. The floor was spotless by the time Patton came back with Virgil, who looked like he’d been crying. He went straight to Emile.

“Um, Remy told me that was your favorite mug. I’m so sorry that I broke it, I can try to find another one or -”

“Oh, Virgil, no.” Emile moved to hug him, but stopped himself. Instead he held his arms out. Virgil slipped into them easily. “I’m not mad at all. I’m just glad you’re okay.”

Remy watched the scene unfold with a smile. Emile always seemed to know exactly what to say.

“Rem also said you’re a therapist?” Virgil asked, continuing when Emile nodded. “Do you think you could take another client?”

Emile moved his hands to Virgil’s shoulders. “I think you’d be better off with a co-worker of mine. I’m worried that since we’re friends it’ll be hard to separate work life and personal life. But my co-worker Jamahl was looking for some new clients. He does music therapy.”

“That sounds great. Can you give me his information?”

The two continued chatting, Virgil’s smile returning as they did.

Roman nudged Remy. “I didn’t mean for the mug to break.”

“It’s fine. I’ve got it covered.” Remy turned, poking Roman in the chest. “But you need to tone it down. Virgil isn’t like your usual type. Come on too strong and you might scare him away.”

“Got it.” Roman stretched his arms above his head, his lips twitching as he caught Virgil staring. “I gotta go plan the next open mic with Logan. See ya.”

“Em?” Remy asked, seeing that Virgil was heading out the door. Emile turned and gave him a questioning look. “You want another hot chocolate?”

“Yes please!”

Extra Info: This fic was inspired by the song “Hold On” by Chord Overstreet and as always I 11/10 recommend you listen to it. Also, I would like to note that this is an extremely sad and dark piece so please please please do not read it if you know it will trigger you. I promise not all my stuff will be this dark but because I watch too much criminal minds I am a little bit “dark and twisty” so this kind of stuff will come up every now and then.

This was it. You were done. You couldn’t do it anymore. You breathed.

Inhale.

Exhale.

As you looked around the room, your eyes fell upon a photograph. It was taken on the day you and Spencer went ice skating together, and he pretended to not know how just so he could hold your hand. A smile made its way onto your face for the first time in a while, but you hated the bitter sweetness of old memories. On the one hand, you loved thinking back to times when you were happy. Truly happy. Oh, how times had changed. Now thinking about those memories made you cry, because you knew there was no way to go back to how things had been. How was it possible to want to cherish something and forget about it at the same time? You sighed and stared at the blade sitting on your desk. Your hands rested on its cool surface as you learned up against it, head hung low as a million thoughts flew through it.

I can’t do this to him. He won’t survive.

Thoughts swarmed your head like a hurricane. You wracked your brain, trying to think of a way out that wouldn’t kill you both. And then it came. You opened the desk and took out a flimsy piece of notebook paper and a pencil, as if a note explain yourself would make it all better. Maybe it wouldn’t erase his pain, but you hoped it spare him some. You heard somewhere that the not knowing is the worst part for the people left behind. After a while, they could grasp the fact that you were gone, that was easy. It was not knowing the reason why that eats at them for an eternity. Spencer had to know he wasn’t a reason. You picked up a pen and held it against the paper, watching as the dot of ink grew larger and larger. Nothing had ever prepared you for this moment. English class had taught you how to write a 2,000 word essay in one night, but you couldn’t ever recall “how to write a suicide note,” being on a syllabus. You figured if you didn’t think about the words to much, they would just come to you.

Dear Spence,

I don’t know how to say this. I’m sorry. I’ll miss you. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me. I love you.

You were planning on something a little more extravagant than that. That’s what always happened in books in movies. Characters writing big long letters to their loved ones, explaining every detail of their decision. A play by play to the exact moment they decided they were going to cut their life short. But in that moment, you couldn’t even bring yourself to think what you felt. Trying to put your reasoning on paper was impossible, as if you had to have a good enough reason to kill yourself. Almost as if there was a court that approved your application for suicide. “Oh, you hate yourself and you think you’re a burden to everyone? Sorry, Mike over here just overfed his goldfish and killed it. Please try again in 20 years.” Realizing the fact that you couldn’t even figure out what you were feeling suddenly frightened you. If you couldn’t even understand your own brain, how could Spencer? Words started floating through your head as you attempted to put a label on what you felt. Sad? No, not really. Depressed maybe, but not necessarily sad. Angry? Angry at the world? Yes. Angry enough to die? Probably not. Guilt? Guilt. That was it. You probably felt guilty because that you were leaving an innocent man to suffer while you got to be free. But you couldn’t help it. You were trapped.

You placed the note on the counter and undressed yourself. As you walked into the bathroom, blade in hand, you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror. Cringing, you studied each and every part of your body. The body you had despised your entire life. You were too big, had too many stretch marks and too many scars. The cuts covered your body. Your eyes strung with tears as you realized this is the last time you would ever look in a mirror. You didn’t know whether those tears are of happiness or sadness. It was all irrelevant anyways, none of it mattered anymore. In a few minutes you would be dead, completely useless to the world as you always had been. You never had a purpose, you had just become tired of pretending that would ever change. The water stung the cuts on your thighs as you stepped into the bath. Slowly, you sank down into it. The coldness seeped into your veins, leaving chills across your skin. The blade in your hand stared at you, taunting you, daring you to cut.  You bit your lip, but you weren’t sure why. You had no doubts, no fears. This is what you wanted to do.

“I’m in complete control”, you reminded yourself, although you knew it was bullshit. You weren’t the one who decided to do this. The monster that has slowly been possessing your body for the past three years was. The person you once were was gone. She died the day you put a blade to your small wrist for the first time. Just as you were about to do for the very last time. Inhaling, you plunged the blade into your arm despite your shaking hand. You drug down your arm, following the blue vein that ran down it like a map. A map to death.  Blood began pouring out of you and mixed in with the bath water, turning it a murky red color. Black dots began to appear in front of you as your head spun. The cold water seeped closer and closer to your face as you sunk down into it, slowing losing conscious. You were so close to death that you didn’t even hear the front door open. The last thing you saw before you blacked out completely was Spencer leaned over the bathtub, tears cascading down his red face as he wrapped his arms around your limp body, trying to pull you from the tub.

Spencer’s POV

Your lifeless body stared at Spencer from the bath mat, your blood staining the once white fabric. He couldn’t take his eyes off you, even as he fumbled to reach for his phone.

“911 what’s your emergency?”

“My girlfriend is bleeding out.”

The words, “my girlfriend tried to kill herself in our bathtub with a blade she got from a broken pencil sharpener,” refused to come out of his mouth, but he assumed it didn’t matter. All he knew was that you were probably dead. Time was nonexistent. The next thing he knew he was riding in the back of the ambulance as he watched you slowly fade further and further away from him. He felt like he was dreaming. This couldn’t be real. Everyone else who fell in love got to be happy. They got to give each other valentines and go out on movie dates and kiss each other whenever they please. His stomach twisted when he realized he might not get to kiss you ever again.

As soon as he arrived at the hospital, a nurse pulled him away from you as you were whisked off to surgery. He stood there, in the middle of the ER, completely helpless. His pulse racing and could hear his heartbeat in his ears as it echoed loudly inside his chest. His head was swimming with a million thoughts all at the same time, and he couldn’t get them to stop. God, he just wanted them to stop. The nurse asked if he wanted to call anyone. All his concentration was put into trying to remember anyone’s name. “J- Jennifer Jareau,” he finally stammered out. The nurse nodded and lead him to a waiting room and then left him. Alone.

The ticking of the clock was starting to drive him insane. Why was there so much noise? He put his head in his lap and clamped his arms over his ears, trying to block it all out, but it persisted with no avail. The clock, the crackle of the AC, they sound of people shoes as they walked outside the door. It was too much.

“Spence.”

The sound of a soft voice startled him. His arms fell from his ears and dangled at his sides, but he kept his head down, to embarrassed to look up. JJ was standing before him, tears in her eyes as she said his name. “Spence?” she asked, bending down to look at him. She brushed a loose curl out of his face and looked him in the eye, eyebrows furrowed in concern. Spencer felt a tear trickle down his cheek and land on his cardigan. He sniffed as he pursed his lips and shut his eyes, still not believing any of this was happening. She was fine. He told himself. I thought she was fine. The more he thought about her, the more he began to cry. The now bitter sweet memories of seeing her smile when he woke up every morning or hearing her laugh when he complained about being referred to as a “pipe cleaner with eyes,” tore at his heart. “Aww Spence.” JJ said, wiping away a tear. She didn’t know how to help him. How do you help someone who was waiting to see if the love of there life was alive or not? She didn’t know. “Spence did you cut yourself?” JJ asked with motherly concern, seeing the jagged tear in his jeans that was seeping blood.

Spencer shrugged, “probably just the blade she dropped,” he said plainly.

The words made JJ’s heart ache. Here he was, slumped in a hospital chair, crying because he didn’t know what was going to happen, and she knew it killed him knowing that he couldn’t fix it.  Whenever there was a problem, Spencer made fixing it his number one priority. He couldn’t fix this. He couldn’t bring you back to life, or make your pain go away. He was so caught up in it that he hadn’t even noticed that he hurt himself on the blade you tried to take your life with.

“What can I do?”

“Just…” Spencer started before having to stop to compose himself, “Be here,” he finished, voice breaking as he did. He bit the inside of his cheek, trying to contain his emotions.

“Okay.” JJ nodded, sitting down in the chair next to him. He tilted his head to rest on her shoulder and collapsed further into her as he felt her arms wrap around him. “Okay.” She repeated. “Okay.”

Hours passed. Or maybe it was only a few minutes, Spencer wasn’t quite sure, but before they knew it, the doctor had come out to talk to them. “Are you Y/N’s family?” She asked them.

“Yes.” They both said in unison.

“Okay, well she’s stable for now, but we’re not sure when she’ll wake up. We had to suture her wrists and replace a lot of her blood, but she should be fine, with the expectation of lots of therapy of course.”

Spencer let out a sigh of relief as he allowed a small smile to appear on his face. JJ thanked the doctor as they both head into your room. They made themselves comfortable in chairs by your bed. Spencer took your hand in his as he learned back into his chair, falling asleep to the sound of your steady breathing, and the beeping on the heartrate monitor. He loved that sound. It meant you were alive. That you were okay. That he would be okay.

 Your POV

You woke up to the sun streaming in through the window pane, casting a warm glow onto your face. You almost smiled at the feeling. It reminded you of carefree summer days spent at a neighborhood block party, eating red, white and blue popsicles with your friends. It just made you happy. You could hear soft snoring coming from the person next to you.

Spencer.

Oh shit, Spencer. Had he been there all night? Had he been there more than one night? You quickly realized that this question would be a lot easier to answer if you knew what day it was. You squeezed his hand gently to wake him. He opened his eyes, which were red from either sleep deprivation, crying, or both. You didn’t know. Another pang of guilt stabbed you the more you looked at him. His messier than usual hair, the crescent shaped circles under his eyes. You did this to him, and you didn’t even know why.

“Hey beautiful,” he said groggily, rubbing sleep from his eyes. You managed to give a small smile in return. He brushed your forehead with the edge of his thumb and you relaxed at the feeling, as if all your problems and this giant mess you’ve gotten yourself into were now gone because of the way his hands felt up against your skin. Not in a sexual way, but in a pure way. The way only Spence could make you feel. He made you feel safe.

“How long have I been here?”

“Just a day.” He responded.

“And you?”

“Just a day,” he repeated, looking down at your hand as he smiled. His eyes then wandered over to your wrists, which were covered in big white bandages, but they did nothing to hide the other cuts up and down the upper part of your arms. “I love you,” he started, bringing an edge of seriousness you’ve never heard from him before. He looked up at you with those big brown eyes. “You know that, right?”

“Of course, I do, Spence.” You dreaded where this conversation was heading.

“You know you can talk to me about anything.”

“I know.” You said quietly, breaking eye contact as shame consumed you.

“Do you want to talk about it?” he asked in a low voice, leaning towards you as he said it. You promptly shook your head. To say you have zero interest in talking about it would be the understatement of the year. You know that you can talk to him, but you don’t want to cause him any more pain than you already put him through.

“Okay.” He said, understanding. “Not now, but eventually we need to talk about it okay?”

You nodded in agreement. As much as you hated to admit it, he was right. As always. He bent down and placed a gentle kiss on your forehead, and you felt a small tear drop trickle off his face. “I love you Y/N.” he said. “Sleep.”

I drew a little art for this earlier, but I have a desperate need to write this out in its entirety. Victoria belongs to @freaky-fan-art and Violet, of course, belongs to me.

Did you know that growing up as a princess was extremely stressful? No, it’s not the fact that your mother would want you to be included in everything political, or the fact that you’d constantly meet new people despite the crippling fear that you were dissapointing them with your bland looks. It wasn’t even the fact that you would always be looking at your tablet, never at the leaders themselves, because you needed to understand what the fuck was going on. 

It was, instead, the pressure that was put on you by the Queen. 

Violet lived with this pressure day to day, for years. Ever since her mother had convinced her dad to move back to Mewni when Violet was 6, things hadn’t exactly been as fun as they had been back at Echo Creek.

At Echo Creek, a large portion of the citizens actually used ASL to speak. They didn’t stare at Violet whenever she came by despite her strange clothes, and the fact that one of her ears was horribly scarred on the innings of it. They didn’t stare when she opened a portal before them to rush off into a new dimension because she would’ve panicked by how many people were there. 

At Echo Creek, Violet’s grandparents were likely resting, getting older. They must’ve gone completely grey in Violet’s absence. Their skin was likely wrinkled, their eyes still shining.

Her uncle Marco would be waiting, cookies at the ready, prepared to catch her as she would jump on him to give him the biggest hug as they waited for the next batch of cookies were ready so that they could eat themselves sick. 

But in Mewni, the warmth Violet felt wasn’t there. Everywhere she turned was dark, jagged, and strange eyes stared at her. She was constantly in and out of fittings and manner classes. Her back hand was red and had healing blisters from when she couldn’t properly pick up a teacup until she was close to tears and ready to just throw the cup to the ground out of frustration. 

In Mewni, her parents offered no cookies, no hugs. They kept their backs straight, their jaws firm, and told Violet that she couldn’t keep silent all the time; she would have to give up her ‘phase’ of silence someday. 

Violet was sure that maybe her mom would’ve gotten her; she was a teenager once too, and from the stories Eclipsa whispered into Violets head, she and Star ‘acted so much alike’.  The thought made Violet’s lips pucker. 

It was an easy choice for Violet when she turned 18. She had gone behind her parents backs, obtaining a college application form and filling it out. She found her own documents easily, and managed to get the application turned in with little to no fuss. 

Despite this, her hands kept tapping the table. She was nervous. 

Violet didn’t even notice that Victoria had stopped signing, instead favoring to watch Violet tap the table and stare a hole into the tablecloth. 

Vio was startled when a slender hand reached over and grabbed her own, getting her attention. She looked up and found three eyes staring at her, amusement dancing in them. 

“Excited?” Victoria signed, a smile playing on her lips. 

“More like.. nervous?” Violet shook her head, biting her lip. “what if Mom finds out before I do? She’d never let me go.”

Victorias smile drifted ever so slightly, before she squeezed Violets hand. 

“You’ll get in.” she smiled. “I know you can.” 

Violet relaxed, although barely, and asked if Victoria could start her story over; after all, it was unfair that Violet hadn’t been listening to her, and now was giving her her full attention. 

The weeks passed, leaving Violet a nervous wreck. She would constantly sneak out of her room, taking her wand with her into the too-empty woods. She heard stories of millions of creatures living here; she wondered where they were now. 

Then, three weeks to the day, Violet received a letter. 

It was unlike Violet to not mirror call, or to send notes to Victoria. While she had admitted that she felt annoying while she did these, she wanted Victoria to know that she was kept in mind at most times of the day, and that Violet felt the need to show and share her affection.

So for a full day to nearly pass, and Violet hadn’t even sent a small note... well... it was worrying. 

Victoria wandered the halls of her home, musing on kingdom related manners, and coming back to the issue of the missing Violet. What could’ve happened to her?

This has only happened three times in the 4-5 years they’d known each other. The first was during a doctors visit that lasted two weeks, another was when Violet got ensnared in her own spell, and the last was when Violet was going to get a haircut and had been deeply afraid to even look at the result, let alone show Victoria.

So that meant she was either perfectly fine, or in dire conditions. 

Victoria was so deep in thought, she didn’t realize she was hearing footsteps. They grew louder, finally catching her attention before she turned, just barely catching Violet into her arms before the smaller wrapped her arms and legs around her, face burying into her neck as Violet’s shoulders shook. 

Victoria was worried; was Violet crying? It felt as if she was. 

It took a good five minutes for Violet to sign to Victoria what happened; 

Violet had gotten home, found the letter first, and..... she got accepted.

The genuine smile on Violets face could melt even those with cold hearts. Happy tears were falling down her face as she hiccuped and sobbed, finally being able to get away from the abusive nature of Mewni and to be closer to actual family. 

Victoria decided to sit in a plush chair, seeing Violet make the same symbols ovoer and over. 

She was saying “I’m accepted! I’m going home!”

For a brief second, her excitment revolved around that Violet got into school, and being able to celebrate with her.

A/N: Now that we’re in the thick of the holiday season, I’ve gotten a few asks for chosen family and hurt/comfort. I know it can be really hard dealing with family (or making the perfectly legitimate choice not to but seeing posts on social media that make it seem like everyone else has a loving, supportive biological family). No matter what choice you make (and I know sometimes there really isn’t a choice, depending on the situation), I’m sending you all the best thoughts. A/N 2: Regarding a few lines in this fic: Obviously not all religion is inherently homophobic, nor do I think anyone smart and scientific (e.g. Alex) must necessarily be an atheist. But I think for so many of us who were raised Catholic (fun foreshadowing here for the nerd notes at the end today), religion was something that shaped our upbringing in an often profound way and was then thrown back in our faces when we came out. Are there Catholics who don’t follow the Church on its teachings about LGBTQ issues? Of course. But, for instance, the fact that my family happened to be supportive of LGBTQ rights in a general way didn’t mean that I wasn’t terrified of coming out to them; it didn’t exempt me from years of internalized shame after hearing priests and religion teachers teaching that homosexuality was an intrinsic disorder of the soul; and it certainly didn’t save me from the humiliation of having to write that gay sexuality was a sin on a test to get an A, of knowing that I put the jobs of my family members who worked for the Church at risk just by being out, of being forced back into the closet to serve as a teacher at a Catholic high school. “Are you and Maggie doing anything for Christmas?” Kara asked, popping another handful of popcorn into her mouth as she nudged Alex, who had started to nod off during the last episode of The Walking Dead.

“Hmm?”

“Christmas—what are you doing?”

“Oh,” Alex sighed, pulling herself up and rubbing at her eyes. “I don’t know. I mean…I know Maggie used to celebrate it with her family, but obviously that hasn’t been the case in years.”

“Right, right.”

“And it’s not like she goes to church at all these days.”

“I mean…you’re not exactly religious, but we still do Hanukkah with Eliza.”

Alex shook her head. “It’s different, I think. I was never religious; it was always more about…I don’t know, being with family and having something in common. I thought mom might be disappointed in me for being gay, but I never thought her reasoning would be that God said it was bad or anything like that.”

“Right,” Kara conceded. “But it might still be nice to celebrate together—you know, build new traditions.”

“I kinda fucked up with that whole thing on Valentine’s Day,” Alex sighed. Sure, they’d talked eventually and found a way to celebrate, to reclaim memories that had hurt Maggie for so many years. But Alex didn’t want to try to surprise Maggie this time and risk dredging up buried trauma once more. “I don’t know. I’ll talk to her.”

Closing her eyes, Maggie blinked back hot tears that threatened to fall. She focused on her breathing: Breathe in—1, 2, 3, 4, 5—hold—1, 2, 3—exhale—1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. She fumbled to take off her watch, finding her pulse and focusing on its too fast beat, waiting for it to slow in time with her deep breathing. She ignored the clock, ignored the reminders of how soon Alex would be home, how weak she would look sitting at the kitchen counter and crying over a piece of paper—a stupid Hallmark greeting card with some trite bullshit scrawled across it in fake cursive.

Of course, the card itself hadn’t set her off. It was the hand-written note inside. The sight of the same handwriting that had adorned the rare note in her lunchbox in kindergarten was what had left her eyes stinging, not the vague platitudes about having a very merry Christmas and an even happier New Year. As she read, she was overcome with surges of anger and sorrow and a guilt that she had never quite been able to shake, no matter how much “pride” she claimed.

She tried to seize on the anger—the rage and frustration that she’d used as motivation to succeed: to do well enough in school to get herself out of that small Nebraska town; to do well enough in college to keep her scholarship; to do well enough in the academy to guarantee her a job, even as a non-straight, non-white woman. And there was plenty of it. Anger at her father’s suggestion that her family had always been there for her, as though they hadn’t left her alone at her aunt’s house with barely enough clothing for the week. Rage at this idea that she had been the one to wrong the family simply by living her life honestly and authentically, that she had ruined something otherwise perfect by being herself. Frustration at the phrase, “your friend,” as though her father hadn’t stormed out of their bridal shower precisely because Alex was so much more than just a friend, as though he hadn’t forced her out of her home and family as a mere child because her feelings for Eliza exceeded the bounds of friendship.

But then there was the photo of all of the cousins and nieces and nephews she’d never met. There were sentences about just how much older everyone had gotten, the sickness and bad times they’d been through without her there, the deaths she’d never known about, let alone mourned. Because she’d already done that—mourning the loss of a family that still existed—but not for her. Not with her.

It still got to her, still struck her with a guilt that felt like it could wrench her open, could undo everything she’d worked for, could tear down every inch of progress and confidence and sense of self she’d fought to build for herself.

Maybe he was right. Maybe they were all right. Maybe she was selfish—selfish for putting herself and her desires above her family, the people who had raised her, who had sacrificed their lives to try to make hers better.

And there was another voice—much quieter, harder to hear, harder to believe—that seemed to call back, to tell her that she was worth it, that her life wasn’t worth sacrificing on the altar of bigoted beliefs, no matter who else worshiped there. She thought the voice sounded an awful lot like Alex’s, and its echoes, the voices of her new family: M’gann and J’onn and James and Kara and Eliza and Winn and everyone else who had come together to prove to her that she had people in her corner even when she felt most alone and least worthy of love.

But they were just that: voices. And in the face of the letter, its words right there, her fingers able to trace over them, feel the indents where her father had pressed down just a little harder, those marks and proof of a family that existed in reality—a family she could barely even think of as family anymore—those voices advocating for her faded to the background, drowned out in a chorus of self-loathing so overpowering she could barely manage to stagger toward the bed, her deep breathing long forgotten.

Alex found her there nearly an hour later. Her body was rigid, trembling every so often but otherwise catatonic. She looked as pale as Alex had ever seen her, and there were tear tracks streaked across her cheeks, her eyes puffy and rubbed raw from the harsh swipe of her shirt sleeves. Her fingers were clenched into fists, and her short nails were leaving deep moon-shaped imprints in her palms.

“Maggie!” Alex called out, rushing forward. She’d seen her like this once before—just once—and it had terrified her as much then as it did now. Remembering her DEO training, she forced herself to stay calm, to detach herself from the situation and let her medical instincts take over.

“Hey, Maggie, it’s me, Alex,” she said, her voice low and even as she knelt down on the ground next to her, pulling out the bottle of water she carried with her in her bag and putting it beside Maggie on the bedside table. “You okay if I sit here?”

Maggie managed to get herself to nod.

“Great. And if that changes, I can move, okay? I’m going to stay with you, but I can be a little farther away, or I can get closer if you want.” She paused to let Maggie process. “Do you think you can breathe with me?”

“It’s not helping,” Maggie forced out, her teeth chattering shut.

“Maybe if we do it together, it’ll help a little, okay?” Alex murmured. “Can I put a blanket on you?” Seeing the nod of assent, Alex pulled out the fluffiest blanket they had—the one with no tags, no rough patches or odd seams, the one that Maggie had wrapped around her after everything with her dad and Cadmus—and carefully draped it over Maggie, taking care not to tuck it under her, lest she feel trapped. Feeling how cold Maggie was to the touch, she slipped over to the edge of the room and turned up the thermostat before making her way back over to the bed.

She knelt next to Maggie, helping her to slow her breathing, holding her hand once she told her it was okay to touch, checking her pulse and smiling broadly as it came down to close to normal levels, telling Maggie just how proud she was when she was able to unclench her muscles and relax slightly into the mattress. Once the worst of it seemed to be over, she got Maggie to drink water and stretch out her stiff muscles.

“What do you say to a hot bath together? It’ll warm you up, and we can light the nice candles.”

“Even the cookie one?”

“Definitely the cookie one,” Alex agreed, smiling at the signs of Maggie returning. A few moments later, she came back into the bedroom, having lit the candles and begun filling the bath. “You good to walk?”

“Yeah,” Maggie nodded, standing up and rolling her neck to work out the cricks that had developed in it. She still let Alex take her by the hand and walk her to the bathroom, cracked a joke or two when Alex asked to help take off her clothes, grinned when Alex pulled out the extra fluffy towels they had picked up a few weekends ago and set them on the radiator to warm while they were in the bath.

For a while they relaxed in silence, Maggie sitting between Alex’s legs, her head resting on Alex’s shoulders while Alex ran her fingers through Maggie’s hair.

“My dad wrote,” Maggie said, her voice quiet.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Do you think I’m a bad person?”

“What? No, Maggie, never. You’re—god, you’re one of the best people I know.”

“That’s not true. You know Supergirl.”

“Yeah, well Supergirl never gives me the last slice of pizza, and you always offer to share.”

Maggie snorted, shaking her head against Alex’s shoulder. “That’s not what I mean.”

“What do you mean? Because honestly, Maggie, you are one of the most caring people I know. I—you’ve made me better. And not just by helping me to come out,” she clarified, anticipating Maggie’s objection that anyone could’ve done that with enough perseverance or bluntness. “You’ve made me rethink some of those things I assumed I knew. You helped me to see aliens who weren’t just like my sister as people who needed protection, not just prosecution or imprisonment. You showed me possibilities for a life I never thought I’d have.”

“But you didn’t say anything about my family. People have died, Alex—people I loved, people who loved me. They died, and I didn’t know.”

“There’s a difference between choosing not to know and never having been told.”

“Is there? Phones exist. Hell, mail exists. I never tried reaching out.”

“You did nothing wrong!” Alex tried to bite back her anger, knowing that wasn’t what Maggie needed. “Look, I get where you’re coming from. But self-preservation, knowing to take care of yourself—that matters too. You had no way of knowing how they would react if you tried to reach out. They had already hurt you, Maggie.”

“Still. They’re family.”

“And so am I, but if I hurt you—god, Maggie, if I hurt you that way, I wouldn’t want you to feel like you owed me anything. You don’t owe anyone your forgiveness.” Trying to find words, Alex let out a sigh of frustration. “You did try, Maggie. Think about it that way. You tried—you invited your dad to our bridal shower, in part because I wasn’t thinking quite clearly. I thought…I could only think in terms of my own relationship with my mother. And we went through some rough, rough periods, but it was different. I didn’t see that clearly then. But you gave him a chance he didn’t deserve—a chance you were good and pure and kind enough to give him—and he threw it away.”

“He came.”

“Yes, and he left.”

“I know,” Maggie huffed. “And I thought that would be it! And if it was…well, maybe this would all be easier, you know? God, I just—he said no! He doesn’t want me the way I am. So why won’t he stop acting like it’s my fault?”

“I don’t know,” Alex admitted, her voice barely a whisper as she wrapped her arms around Maggie. “I really don’t. And I don’t—I don’t have the perfect advice to offer. I’m happy to call him and yell at him, or get a restraining order, or burn the letter, or ignore it entirely and hold you, or kiss you until you can’t think about anything else. I mean, whatever you want, you know? I’m here for you, and I’ll support you no matter what you choose.”

“Even if I choose vegan ice cream and a whole night of Rizzoli and Isles?” Maggie teased, opting to ignore the tears prickling the corners of her eyes.

“Even both of those terrible choices.”

“You love Rizzles just as much as I do.”

“You’re a cop! How do you deal with all the procedural violations?”

“I watch for the hot ladies with delightful romantic chemistry on my screen and put up with the rest.”

“Yeah, yeah. They don’t even get to make out, though.”

“Neither do half of the actual gay couples on television!”

“Fine,” Alex whined, though she kissed Maggie’s cheek anyway, which led Maggie to turn around, finding Alex’s lips with her own and letting herself be held, letting herself be cared for.

Eventually they got out of the tub, the water having grown lukewarm. Wrapped up in a fuzzy towel, Maggie nudged Alex with her shoulder. “You think it’s okay that I don’t try to reach out to him for Christmas?”

“I think that’s your decision, and you are allowed to celebrate however you want.”

“I mean…I want to celebrate by going sledding and destroying you in a snowball fight.”

“Whatever you want within reason,” Alex clarified, laughing at Maggie’s pout. “And maybe, just maybe, we can think about traveling somewhere cold for a vacation. Don’t see why we’d want to, though,” she added, winking at her fiancée.

“So cheesy movies and as much junk food as Kara can bring over? And maybe when she leaves you and I can find our own way to celebrate…”

“I think that sounds perfect.”

I’ll give you a secret.

And I’ll be as open as I have never been before but no promises just yet, cause you know, transparency has never been my strongest suit. So… Whenever I am torn between two opinions, I flip a coin. If I am happy about the outcome, I understand that I had always wanted that option not the other but if I’m not at all happy with it, I recognize my desire and go against the outcome of the coin. HOWEVER, (yes I insert a big BUT here), if I have no desire whatsoever to neither opinions, I simply let the coin decide what I am gonna do. This can be a smallest thing (choosing which dress to buy) or a big life altering situation (like, for example, deciding to change the topic of your thesis. Yup, I’ve done it. I’m not religious by any means but I am a WOman of my word, in this case, my coin). Anyhow, this past week was hard. On Wednesday morning, November 20, I wanted to re-check application documents one more time, as if I haven’t done it million times before. I have this excel document that lists everything, literally everything (from what IELTS score you need to have, to what you should add to your SoP kind of stuff, EVERYTHING). It’s even better than most college websites, I’ll tell you that. But oh god but… HOW ON EARTH DID I MISS THE HIGLIGHTED IN A RIDICULOUSLY BLINDING YELLOW COLORED WRITING THAT SAYS THIS AND THAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED TO BE MAILED ASAP? HOW? Cherry on the cake, the area even has its own special attention sign. I could feel my blood pressure rising, mind twirling around possible explanations on why and how I missed it, heart is broken because it means all the work I have done up until now will have been for nothing if these documents aren’t sent to these institutions by the due date. I was losing it, I could feel. I was freaking out.

Take a deep breath!

The robot in me intervened (It’s past time babe but thanks i guess?). So if you don’t know it already, I have these 2 distinct personalities, one is extremely emotional, cries at puppy videos, the other I call the robot, extremely goal oriented but gets all the work done. They are siblings but there is a furious rivalry between them. I also like to call them fire and ice, but it’s a topic for another week.

It’s time to compartmentalize.

Send an e-mail to institutions. Send an e-mail to testing agency. Head to registrar’s office, request official transcripts. Call all the couriers there are in Istanbul. Collect all the signatures. Send it with couriers. Attend a meeting with your supervisor. Head home, and then lose it, cry however long you want. Sounds like a good plan. Or is it? Words cannot describe how many times I rushed from pillar to post. It was all fine until I got all the signatures. While in the midst for signature hunt at the registrar’s office the courier decided he had better things to do instead, so he left and suggested with mfing christ on a bike audacity that I should leave the mail at their office by 7. Sure Jen, I’ll do that. Anyhow, I got my transcripts, but do I wanna risk it? Wasn’t the courier leaving a sign? Just because it’s a lot cheaper than any other courier companies, umm let’s say DHL, do I wanna risk these documents to be shipped with this courier where they may never be sent to their destinations. Why do I wanna trust someone I didn’t know an hour ago? Should I wait until tomorrow to send these documents after I get a decent answer from the institutions?

It’s heads! Damn it! I want to send these documents now! It cannot wait! UGHHH. Grabbed my jacket, purse and the documents, heading straight to the courier’s office. I have recently passed my driving test (3 days ago!) and will be buying a car ASAP as I have a job lined up and have just left school. I've tried tens of comparison sites and even rang some insurance companies direct to try and get a better quote... I have looked at the smallest possible engine size, that being 0.8l and 1l engines. I've looked at cars such as FORD KA, Vauxhall Corsa, Nissan Micra, Renault Clio and a few others too. The cheapest quote I have found for all of the cars is for a 2000 Ford KA 1.3l 3dr 4 seats (the smallest KA engine size possible) and that price was 3,800 paying monthly with a company called My Policy . However, I have used various other KA registration plates all the same engine size but some being 2003 models or 2005 and the insurance jumps to over 6,000! I haven't found another FORD KA cheaper than 5,500 and obviously if I can't get that one particular car out of the thousands for sale that insurance quote will be invalid anyway. Basically, I've tried everything. Adding named drivers (with lots of driving experience 30+ years), putting my car in a locked garage, on the road, tried different cars - models, registration plates, ages, engine sizes, and not to forget the countless comparison sites. The funny thing is with MyPolicy I went onto their site directly to get a quote and they were unable to give me a quote when entering exactly the same information into the Tiger.co.uk comparison site, that site brought up the 3,800 quote with MyPolicy but when I use their site directly they can't give me a quote... I know insurance is based on MANY factors, believe me I understand that. I tried entering different post codes (just out of curiosity) and it did help, but only fractionally.                                            ⋆ EVERY STORY HAS A REASON

Sana got out. That was all that mattered. She had a million reasons to stay, and a million reasons to go back, but right now, she is out. A secret friend gave her the hope and a loophole in her citizenship gave her the chance. She doesn’t remember ever living in South Korea, as she was only 6 months old when her family left, but she was born there.  Her passport was Korean, and that’s all that mattered. She grew up in Japan, raised in a small group of 10 or so families that followed the same teachings, teachings she’d learn were very wrong later in life. When she found she’d had enough, she got out. The group had faced public persecution when she was a child, so they’d stayed low in South Korea, right when she was born, granting her citizenship. Sana had been working at a convenience store in Osaka to contribute to the group- her paychecks going straight into the bank account of their leader,to take care of the community. Most everyone worked part time, although most girls her age were kept on some sort of farm work to keep them safe from the outside world. She’d been trusted to go out into the world with the general populace, “the others”. And that’s how the community lost her. She initially told her co-worker about her life to sort of brag about how much she loved it, to potentially extend the invitation to them someday, which would have grown their group for the first time in several years But instead, over a year of ups and downs, days where for punishment her family wouldn’t take her to work, culminating to a panic attack in the back room of the store, she convinced Sana to try her hand at living in the world on her own. The co-worker was Korean, and had family still in the country. To calm Sana’s worries about finding work, she got her name and application on the Mido Youth Program, once accepted, Sana told her family she had picked up all day shift at the store, they dropped her of at 8:00am, and by 10:00am, her co-worked, turned friend was sending her off to the island, only to look back once she was settled.

You never talk back, you don’t question the elders. You especially don’t disobey direct orders. There were hard and fast rules Sana was raised with. Fairly normal for a child, less so for a 20 year old. But that’s what kept peace among her community. Not long before she was born, Sana’s parents found themselves following a single man. He preached love and community while their world was falling apart. A failed business and bad debt gone bad had destroyed their lives early on in marriage, and this group had surrounded them, kept the loan shark at bay, and paid their debts. Every part of their ability to raise their daughter was owed to the group, and for that, they dedicated their lives, and later on hers, to it. The Divine Community Living in Peace and Harmony believed that all children needed as many parents as possible, to have the best lives possible, which is why Sana grew up calling 20 different people Mother and Father. Within her “generation” (age gaps decided by their beloved leader), everyone was brother or sister, while people not old enough to be parents or too young to be a peer were all “friends”. Their leader, a man name Tanaka Souji didn’t allow her mother to have another child, despite her request to have more, explaining since they owed the group so much, if they could somehow repay the debt, and become contributing members, rather than charity participants, it would make sense for h3r to have more, however, since all members pledged their paychecks to the groups bank account, that future would prove impossible. Tanaka would tell her mother multiple times during the years to find solace in the fact the community allowed her to raise multiple children.

For the most part Sana herself grew up well. The group would rent apartments in groups, and when things were going nicely, large multi family houses in the countryside. She was always grouped off with the other children, rather than living with her parents alone, overseen by whoever agreed to be the children’s caregiver at the time, until she reached an age where various units (as the leader didn’t like to refer to people who were married as their own family- too divisive) would invite her into their home while she waited to marry someone (something the leader would need to approve of course).

She attended school, but wasn’t allowed to interact with other children for very long. Every month the leader would hand down how many minutes the children where allowed to talk to outsiders- the older they got, the less minutes they had. Graduation became a relief, allowing her the freedom to use her discretion for how much she could talk to others, a relief for someone who loved to talk. Despite warnings that the more she interacted with outsiders on a non-professional level, Sana would do just about anything to make new, temporary friends. The old lady from down the street of her job, the high schoolers who always came in for snack, construction workers  who needed morning coffee, they all grew to know Sana as the kind working girl, who’d always be willing to listen to their stories. Believing her life to be rather boring, mixed with the guilt of already talking to people she shouldn’t, she shared very little of her own life with them- all except for Jieun. Jieun also worked at the store. A few years older, the Korean woman had married a Japanese man and moved to his home town to start their family. When she found she was pregnant, she’d gotten a job and Sana had trained her, taking to her quickly as she was the only one in the neighborhood who spoke fluent Korean (a Korean member of the community had taught Sana well).

Sana was there for nearly the whole pregnancy, more than her husband, especially when her husband said he’d had enough and left her. By then Jieun had heard enough of Sana’s home life to decline the invitation to come stay with her group while she needed help, and when she found Sana crying in the backroom, unable to stand on her own, Jieun offered her a chance to get out. She had cousins back in South Korea, about Sana’s age who’d been troublemakers growing up and were having difficulty finding jobs, they’d signed up for a youth job placement program and were now doing well on their own. It’d taken a full two months to convince her, but Jieun got Sana to go. She drove her to the airport, she’d bought her airplane ticket, and given her enough money to survive on through her first check, and she’d sent her off.

Back at the group, Sana’s disappearance through everyone into chaos. The leader punished her parents for her disobedience, but for all they could do, they didn’t know where she’d gone. Sana showed up on Mido with a few hundred dollars and a change of clothes. She’d stashed her passport and all important documents in her purse the morning she left, but beyond that, she had nothing. The first thing she did was go to the local bank, opening an account and securing a low limit credit card. Following a plan she and Jieun had laid out, she rented the cheapest apartment she could and spent as little money as possible. So not to be found until she was doing better, the girl couldn’t contact her friend, in case the group was watching her. She was alone, in a strange city, on a strange island, in a strange country. And she was on her own.
