Thoughts on Benny + The Followers of the Apocalypse?

Idk if you want them separate or together so I’ll give you a little of both.

I personally don’t care for portraying Benny as suicidally arrogant and pathetic. He’s a lot more capable than people in the fandom give him credit for and should def read and take his All Roads characterization into heart as it is canon. I think a lot of it stems from all the other major players and factions being so much more intimidating and equal to the player by the time you reach him and the general goofy aspect of his character like the slang and that god awful suit but he’s truly a force. He cons people, is capable in a fight and is not afraid of getting his hands dirty, he just doesn’t do things that could get him killed if he doesn’t. It’s only when the Courier gets involved that he starts facing repercussions for anything. It’s funny but I wish more peeps focused on his underlying aspects like the fact he is prideful and has a temper but at the same time isn’t belligerent. He goes on benders according to Swank so he really isn’t above all the “missing the tribal days” syndrome all the other Chairmen have. It’s something that always plagues me when I like a popular or well known character in fandom cause they always get dumbed down and it cuts out a lot of the stuff I like to focus on. It doesn’t help that I feel a lot of people treat him like he’s the worst character morally when like random side quest NPCs have definitely done worse than him to you and general on a good day.

For the followers, they are one of my favorite factions despite not being a consequential faction. They had a lot cut from them such as a quest line that had you expose Caesar by revealing all his ancient Roman shit was a farce as he learned it from his time in the Followers and not from Mars (a big reason Caesar has a kill on sight order for followers members or people who reveal they are educated) and just more agency. I think it’s funny they are so close to Vegas while standing against all it represents but I understand why they wouldn’t like it as so many people struggle with addiction and abuse in the Mojave due to how much it sucks to be there. I feel like if you had the option to incorporate them into an independent Vegas or NCR option in a major way they’d do wonders for the future of the Mojave since they universally just want to make living easier and healthier. They are a bunch of pills but they don’t let that get in the way of their goals. I also enjoy how they make anyone who is helpful or just lost a follower (a cut quest lets Rotface join if you encourage him to be better and he’s actually happier for it!!!). I wish we got more random follower NPCs and encampments but New Vegas barely can function with all it has already so I get why their stuff was cut but man does it suck. I think I’d be a follower if I was in the Mojave.

As for Benny AND the Followers? I think Benny appreciates them as a former Boot Rider and tribal. They help those in need and I feel like there’s unspoken solidarity between raiders/tribals and the followers as they likely got healed a lot. If Benny had the power I feel like he’d make them a part of Vegas as like a thank you because y’know, the honor and loyalty is a big part of Chairmen culture past and present. After Emily ehh…. as long as she doesn’t bring it up. They probably wouldn’t accept due to it being Vegas but Benny is just like an annoying old friend to the followers. He’s probably stopped by on his many escapades trying to overthrow House and they tolerate him as a useful in/tie to Vegas power dynamics. He’d make a shitty doctor and most Followers have shit poker faces.

I first got into it, as I think is true for a lot of ppl, through the 2003 animated Teen Titans series (which totally holds up by the way and is worth the watch!) Robin (Dick Grayson) is the team leader and it’s a great way to get to know him as a leader and almost-solo hero. The show is set in his teens during a period in which he is estranged from Batman and Gotham due to a series of fights with his mentor/father/partner (their dynamic is complicated), so you don’t see the Bat or his city at all. Frankly this is likely partially a legal thing with the show, but it’s also a period in which Dick is really finding himself as a hero outside of the sidekick-gig so he’s angsty and rejecting his previous life, making this a super approachable depiction bc u don’t need background info.

If you’re looking to understand Batman and Robin as a dynamic duo (which is important bc it’s the basis of the family structure) the older movies, BTAS, and the og comics are great for that.

The comics get complicated bc each “age” of comics has a different tone, art style, philosophy, creative team, and understanding of the characters so it’s def the most intimidating place to start.

I’m not sure how much you already know about Batman, but if you have read Year One or have a solid knowledge of his early years with and without Robin (dick Grayson) then the next most important family events center on Robin #2 (Jason) and his death and resurrection.

Death in the Family and Under The Red Hood are comics and movies that explain a lot of the thornier dynamics and conflicts btw the Bat and his kids. The early conflicts between Dick and Bruce and then Jason and Bruce hugely influence every other relationship and connection in the family.

Honestly, reading a summary of who each core family member is, their origin stories, and their relationships is enough to start reading fanfiction, which is some of the richest media out there. Lots of it is ooc, of course, but so are a lot of the comics 🤷🏽‍♀️. I find that once you have the knowledge to be able to spot glaring mistakes and avoid fics that truly misinterpret the characters, most fan works treat the characters with more nuance faith and love than DCs rotating cast of writers (with a few notable exceptions, of course).

I’d be super happy to give a summary of each character + their origins + some aspects of their dynamics and/or rec some beginner-friendly fic.

TLDR: There’s really no good or “right” place to start, you just jump in and start treading water until you learn how to swim 😅

Oh god, I could talk about the dynamics between Tony, Steve, and Howard all day long. There's so much complication going on there. And I think it's a really interesting choice on the MCU's part not to write Howard and Steve as best friends. I went back and rewatched CATFA the other day, and it really struck me that Steve views Howard with a measure of awe (because of the things he creates and the fact that he seems to actually understand women where Steve doesn't) and a measure of wariness (for the same reasons), but they're not really friends. We don't see Howard spending time with the Howlies outside of strategy meetings, he's not in either of the bar scenes, and Steve never smiles around him. And on the flip side, up until Steve's death, Howard is fairly condescending towards Steve (at least towards his intelligence, given his remarks about Steve not understanding the Hydra tech). Honestly, I think that a lot of Howard's adoration for Steve came about only after Steve's death. It's easier to look up to a martyr, after all, than a living, breathing superhuman. And it would have been easy for Howard to convincingly claim that he'd admired Steve all along since he, like Tony, uses masks as easily as breathing

Stony fic idea I want to write

Ooh I've had this idea for an interactive reality show AU for literal years at this point, but I've been too intimidated to write it. The idea would be, as I said, a reality show AU with Steve and Tony as the judges, who are already in a relationship and have to deal with outside forces trying to break them up during the course of the season. The interactive part comes in with the fact that the actual reality show would be based on readers' votes. The Stevetony storyline would be pre-planned and completely independent of the reality show storyline. The reality show storyline would be written in real time, though, or as near to it as possible, and characters would be voted off as the readers vote.

As I said, I'm horribly intimidated by it. The interactive aspect makes me very, very nervous. I'm afraid to start writing it and then find out that no one is as interested in the concept as I am, so no one votes. I've had a couple times in the last few years where people claimed to be really excited to read something that I worked really hard on only to get 2-3 regular readers, and I'm just afraid for that to happen here. If it were any other fic, I'd be fine with it, but the fact that it's a fic that would rely on the readership in a time when people are more and more resentful of writers asking for interaction... Well, let's just say this fic is one that'll probably stay in the ideas folder.

ahh omg yes!!! AN EDITING QUESTION god i havent talked about editing in so long even tho im trying to get back into itskldjf

(for those who don't know, i do have an editing insta and tt acc (though i'm not active on tt)!!! @/thae.rchxr on insta and thaerchxr on tt)

i started editing in 2020 during quarantine, and on capcut! i think that it's a pretty good starting spot, especially because it's free and it allows you to understand what you really want to make with your edits/what kinds of edits you want to make - velocities, lyric edits, transition ones, etc

i have to say i wouldn't recommend templates and i'm really not a fan of them. that's my only neg abt capcut now, even though i don't use it... yea i've seen too much of these template apps literally stealing the hard work of editors and it sucks

but anyway!! i currently use after effects, and have used it since early 2022, however it's a computer program, and - though you can pirate it and there are lots of videos online on how to do that - it also costs money if you don't wanna pirate (i got it as a christmas gift so i have the paid version but there's really no difference)

no matter what program you use, TUTORIALS!! youtube is your best friend. i have a youtube channel actually but i mainly post transition inspo instead of tutorials, however if you want some recs (for ae, i unfortunately don't know a lot of tutorial channels for other apps), i learned so much from klqvsluv, ae.chambb, and clewxdre on youtube! and, of course, lauren. she's kind of a mini celebrity in the editing communitysdklf - and there are so many more as well

if it's transition edits you're specifically trying to get into, def try and master the basics - zoom in's, out's, slide left/right, shakes and turbs if that's the kind of edit you wanna make. but honestly, the entire thing is just practice practice practice!! even though i only started editing on ae 2 years ago, i used to make edits, like, every day. i was obsessed. i would wake up and spend hours on edits, trying new transitions and new plugins and effects, and i think it really paid off :)

another thing you can do is attempt to remake edits! most editors will be completely alright with it (as long as you don't steal, ofc) and many even put out project files (i do have a few on my payhip- linked in my insta lmfaodjsf shameless self promo) that you can look at to see how they did certain transitions. remakes are good because it takes out the factor of having to figure out what transitions you want to make and lets you focus entirely on the technical aspect - which will then make it easier for you to pull off the transitions you think of yourself!

so, to conclude this ramble bc i can never shut up - i think i would definitely recommend ae if you have a computer/laptop. but i also think that other editing apps (the ones i see most often are videostar, alight motion, and capcut - all of which are mobile apps) can make absolutely incredible edits. i have friends who use each of these different editing apps and i know they can make some of the most mindblowing edits, even though i personally have no idea how to use vs or am lmaodsjf

so it's up to you! look at some tutorials, don't feel too intimidated, and go with the layout that makes the most sense to you. then just don't be afraid of making a "bad" edit bc let's be real the first edits are alwaysss shitty. i cringe when looking back at the edits all the way to last summer. but that's the beauty of it, because you can see your editing style and skill grow over time, and then you can eventually make edits that you'll be really proud of <3 i wish you the best of luck on your editing journey!! it's honestly so fun once you get into the swing of it :)

Lemon would def appreciate that Player is trying to "fix" things but would ultimately be jealous and envious. Jealous because they so easily fixed problems that would've taken a while to fix. Envious because Player could just fix Flowey so easily. Lemon is the most protective of the Flowey aspect, in a sense. They even become jealous at Frisk(/maybe Crimson/any red soul player) because they helped Flowey when Lemon didn't have the chance to, possibly replacing them. Flowey is THEIR best friend.. it's not fair.

The only thing Lemon would disagree with Player is HOW they handle things. Like intimidating Flowey to force him to be tame or scaring him. Forcing the memories of the timelines down people's throats. They wouldn't like that. It's just adding stress and fear to the situation.

Lemon could help them without scaring them. LEMON can be there for them all. LEMON can be the one to fix things.

I daresay Lemon actually has more emotional beef with Player than with even Crimson, in a sense. Mainly after they get Spinel in the garden'd by Flowey.

I wanted to focus on Mars and Saturn ruled/aspected risings in this post bc usually these people have a harder time in their younger years feeling confident in their looks and self esteem in general, but when they glow up, they GLOW UP. advice and memes are the two things yachi needs most. and she also has a bunch of memes but they are all kinda like.. wholesome memes. like they either have a bunch of heart on them, sanrio characters or cute animals. and she’ll happily give you advice too, but — unless she is in a sour mood or she is very serious — she won’t be harsh about it, she’ll try to be as nice about it as she can. so your conversation will probably consist of sending memes back and forth, random keyboard smashes, harmless gossip and therapy. also sometimes she’ll send you random messages throughout the day with a bunch of heart emojis. 

she’s gets flustered easily so there is that- but i also hc her as like chaotic good so it is somewhat an ‘opposites attract’ situation but also ‘chaos partners who cause trouble together, one does it on purpose and the other does it by accident.’

What do you think separates a simple relationship between enemies/heroes and villains/etc. from a straight-up abusive relationship? And do you consider Guts and Griffith's relationship abusive?

Hmm, interesting question. It’s something I’ve always considered on a case-by-case basis rather than trying to come up with a categorical distinction. I’ll throw some thoughts on this under a cut, because it’s a fairly discourse-adjacent topic, and also it got pretty long.

First I want to make clear that I don’t think it matters if a relationship is straightforwardly abusive in canon, there’s still nothing wrong with shipping it. I could probably be more nuanced there, but honestly for me the bottom line is that I don’t gaf about the influence of fanfiction compared to mainstream media, the most problematic, abuse-romanticizing fic ever doesn’t matter at all next to a million hollywood movies where the hero is entitled to the hot love interest, even moreso when it’s a hero/villain ship which comes bundled with the expectation that it’s not meant to be #relationship goals lol.

But to answer your question, imo most hero/villain relationships have virtually nothing to do with abusive relationships. Here’s a quick defintion I got from the first google result to refer to:

Relationship abuse is a pattern of abusive and coercive behaviors used to maintain power and control over a former or current intimate partner. Abuse can be emotional, financial, sexual or physical and can include threats, isolation, and intimidation.

So first off, the characters have to have a relationship of some kind (maybe not romantic, but something other than “enemies”), secondly, a pattern of behaviour must be exhibited from one in a position of power (not necessarily overt power, it could just be the other’s emotional attachment to them) to control the other in that relationship.

So two people punching each other because one wants to destroy the world and the other wants to save the world, or because they’re on opposite sides of some other conflict, just doesn’t cut it, even if they fuck afterwards, or have a strong emotional attachment to each other, or whatever.

Even a villain imprisoning and torturing the hero over a period of time doesn’t make it an abusive relationship because their goal usually isn’t to control the hero’s behaviour in the context of a relationship, it’s to slowly kill them/hurt them for funsies/get information/prove a philosophical point/whatever. Intent matters here. Like eg, killing your bff’s other friend to isolate them and gain greater control over them bc you’re possessive? Abuse. Killing your bff’s other friend because it’s a necessary part of your Evil Plan or because they discovered that you’re evil and you don’t want to go to jail or die or whatever? Plain old villainy.

All that said there are plenty of grey areas and places where people can disagree and draw their own conclusions both about whether a relationship is abusive in canon and to what extent that even matters to them, and I think that’s perfectly fine and people should generally live and let live when it comes to others’ interpretations of and ways of engaging with fiction.

Some things to keep in mind along those lines are

authorial intent/whether something is narratively treated as abuse rather than basic hero/villian stuff

expectations within the setting and tone of the story (eg Michael Scott would be an abusive boss in real life but in a wacky comedy it’s not something we’re meant to care about)

realism and relatability (which is pretty subjective, but like eg someone might consider the protag discovering their bff tricked them into murdering their other bff to be personally upsetting bc it reminds them of a more mundane form of manipulation within irl abusive relationships while someone else might see it as too far removed from actual irl abuse for them to care about it as anything other than exaggerated villainy, and imo both reactions are perfectly fair)

power dynamic - I know this one can be a major point of contention within the discourse but in fiction if there’s no clear power dynamic and both parties actively hurt each other, as is often the case in hero/villain relationships, I’d call that toxic rather than abusive (assuming the hurts are along the lines of relationship abuse moreso than punching each other to save/destroy the world).

plain old quality of writing where something might be depicted as abuse, purposefully or not, but it sucks so you ignore it (eg technically xena is canonically a rapist but the scene where she fucks a recurring villain while he’s her prisoner was depicted as sexy so v few people in fandom give it a second thought)

As for your second question, no I don’t think griffguts is an abusive relationship. I suppose if you transpose modern mundane standards onto Berserk’s tone and setting it could have been if they’d been fucking during the Golden Age, since Griffith is technically Guts’ boss and adding sex is an abuse of a boss/employee relationship, but they weren’t, and I don’t think it’s something fic set during the Golden Age necessarily needs to be concerned with either.

The second duel contained a violently possessive internal monologue on Griffith’s part, but a) the action of fighting a second potentially fatal duel was explicitly, as Judeau directly tells us, a perfectly acceptable thing to do in the context of their lives in the setting (ie dumb mercenaries), and b) abuse is a pattern of behaviour anyway, not one bad breakup.

The Eclipse sacrifice parallels an abusive relationship (Guts and Gambino), but it’s distinct from it and extremely heightened and fantastical, and Griffith and Gambino are contrasted in terms of their relationships to Guts much more than they’re paralleled. The point of the Eclipse mirroring Gambino selling Guts to Donovan isn’t to say “this is the same kind of relationship,” it’s to say, “this is the darkness of humanity and anyone can succumb to it in the right circumstances.” Also it’s Guts’ ironic tragic consequence for abandoning the Hawks. It’s a satisfying full circle narrative and thematic thing, is what I’m saying, rather than a reflection of Guts and Griffith’s relationship as a whole, which is explicitly positioned as a positive contrast to Guts’ abusive childhood at other points in the story.

And Guts and Femto, or Guts and NeoGriffith, just don’t interact enough to have a relationship, let alone an abusive relationship.

That said, I think there’s a reasonable argument you could make that Griffith’s “if I can’t have him, I don’t care [if he dies]” attitude is a reason he makes the Eclipse sacrifice too (I think it is), and if someone wanted to take that and explore it further in fic as a potential aspect of their relationship that risks becoming, or does become, abusive that could def be IC. But conversely you could also take several aspects of Guts’ character and explore them further in a griffguts fic where Guts is abusive if you wanted.

Like Berserk deals with a lot of dark subject matter and both characters have very big personality flaws that could make either of them believably abusive in fic, but their relationship in canon, while flawed and ultimately tragic, does not constitute abuse in and of itself imo, and a fanfic where they get together and have a happy relatively healthy relationship where they deal with their issues constructively is just as in character and imo actually more thematically appropriate lol.

Hi! Hi! It's okay, this is the first question of its kind heheheheh! (｡•̀ᴗ-)✧ Hope you don't mind it being long though!

It's very hard for me to actually choose cause really all of the characters are just superb from their designs to their personalities and dialogues and even small gestures. The team really worked on every detail and I think it's why I was so pulled into this Fandom in the first place.

But since you ask so uwu-ly I shall answer to the best of my abilities lmao

I'll make it into categories cause these characters are my favourites for very different things

First off we have my bias, my one and only Red Eclipse Emperor,Riddle Rosehearts.

Funnily enough,Riddle was ranked the lowest when I first got into Twst cause every inch of him falls short (no pun intended) in my type of man lmao

I literally said; "He looks like a little brother character, Def not my taste"

Oh,how tables turn.

Riddle is my all time favourite because his story and conflict resonates with me alot. That fear of being excluded and not being able to control everything even when you give it your all hits home for me, especially the way Riddle clings to rules to patch up the wounds he had to endure along his childhood.

Of course I'm not nearly as troubled as he is, but I get it,you know? The way he just lets his frustration eat away at him because he doesn't want to seem weak or incompetent in front of his peers and mother is similar to me not wanting to look vulnerable to my family and friends. He also has this soft side that makes me want to hurl all my love to him 😩💖

My favourite in the aspect of character design has to go to Leona even when all I wanna do is just smack him square on the jaw every single time he comes up

I'll only say this once and that is Leona is just the most well designed Character throughout the whole game (in my very humble opinion ofc) I mean seriously he just looks gorgeous from his hair to the way his eyes turn this dull,green when he's upset or angry and the fact that his built is my ideal type is just 👌🏻👌🏻

I love how they made it so Leona has this rustic yet elegant feel to himself that's just so rarely done in anime,like you can actually feel the overbearingness of his arrogance and intimidation. And from a glance you can actually tell he's a Prince or of Royal blood from how richly coloured he is.

Just 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 to the team who worked on him! YA'LL DESERVE A DAMN AWARD 😤😤😤

Next is my favourite sunshine Kalim. I love this boy because he's just so genuinely wholesome. Usually characters like these are really hard for me to like cause they usually come off as pretentious to me but Kalim just nailed his way into my heart and now when I talk about the sun it's really just Kalim 😩✨

Jamil wins favourite voice because hot damn he takes chotto eroi to a whole new level. I have a voice kink (surprise surprise) and Jamil really shocked me with his voice and Its ironic cause in general terms he's my least favourite (no offense to his stans tho 👉🏻👈🏻) and I'm not familiar with his VA at all.

Again, I love all the boys in Twst because in the end they're very different with very unique aspects to their character build that makes me extremely envious as a writer and it doesn't necessarily mean the ones I listed out today are the only ones I'd simp over HAHAHAHA they're just the ones who's given me the biggest impact throughout the game.
