I loved how this season (and especially this episode!) tied together SO MUCH of Perrin's arc that we've seen so far. It really feels like this is the moment it's all been building towards.
His wife's death. Violence is hard to control and may hurt people you care about. Running into the Tuatha'an. Nonviolence is another option, that takes a different kind of strength. His interactions with Dain and the Whitecloaks. People's intentions and their actions don't always agree; people can be twisted by grief to perpetuate cycles of violence, and the only way to break out is to choose to stop.
We can now look back on all of that as threads in the story of how he thinks about violence and non-violence - when to deploy violence and when to choose not to - leading him here:
Lord Perrin Goldeneyes, who knows that the Two Rivers must fight or be destroyed. Who wants to send Faile away to be safe but listens and trusts that she can handle herself in battle. Who makes a deal with Whitecloaks he knows might turn on him because he can see it's the only chance they have. Who desperately - desperately! - wants to kill Padan Fain but holds back because he knows he can save more lives that way.
SO. FUCKING. GOOD.

Initial S3E6 reactions, in no particular order:
Deira Bashere slander!!!!
Was…was this the whole circus arc? Because I love the circus arc and this was more than I thought we’d get! Knife throwing, Elayne performing and loving it!
The Panarch singing bawdy songs? Now it’s Elayne 😁
Mat’s not gonna get his hat, is he? Thom’s hat is just our tribute to it…
Nynaeve drunk and smiling/giddy just seems *wrong* somehow, lol
But Nynaeve and Min bonding? I love that!
Moghedien and Nynaeve was perfect (but where’s her necklace in this scene? Either someone needs to find it for me, or we need a clarification that she isn’t wearing it on purpose so it doesn’t get stolen…)
Is this a safe space to admit I forgot we were dealing with a Robert Jordan book, as well as the context, and did not realize what the hills actually were in that song?
Nynaeve resisting Moghedien ❤️
Yeah, Alsera is the dead girl in the Stone and it’s pretty much as devastating as in the book
Did Rand just off Sammael without seeing it in a cloud of mist?? Because that is a truly hilarious book call-back.
Chesmyl has a cat!
And Moghedien is just the maid from hell, yuck
Lan managed to not have a single line this whole episode, huh
The breakup finally happened!
Also, Moiraine needs to get off TeamLanfear asap. Like, yesterday
Alanna’s rosebud coaching can actually work!
I love Faile (Deira slander aside) and am totally on board
Faile with Bain and Chiad is perfect
Not sure I love two completely untrained girls being able to Heal right off the bat?
When I make my friends watch this episode we’re going to have a sing along for the end credits
Padan Fain last season was kind of confusing, but I am on board with terrifying-Whitecloak-Padan Fain
They included Faile being all put out the Horn was not only found but blown 😁
(I managed to misspell “Moghedien” three different ways before looking up the actual spelling)

Just saw a crack theory on Reddit that the peddler who told Gawyn that Rand killed Morgase was a Forsaken who compelled him, or Padan Fain, and that's why he makes such awful decisions for the rest of the story. I'm not convinced, but I read it and so now you lot have, too.

So Padan Fain killed a bunch of Whitecloaks and took their uniforms, yeah? Only time I'm for Fain doing a massacre.

my WoT cold open predictions:
Ep 1: The Shredding, ofc
Ep 2: Morgase's coronation as seen in the trailer. i think this'll be a powerful introduction to her and Elaida before we get her in the actual Tower. I think we'll get a Foretelling here too
Ep 3: This is the ep where "Perrin learns the consequences of his rage", so I think this might be Padan Fain meeting up with Dain and teaming up to go to the Two Rivers
Ep 4: this is our Rhuidean ep! Apparently this ep is Rand/Moiraine/Egwene all in different worlds, but I think we might start with an Aiel. Maybe Muradin entering the columns to start?
Ep 5: I think this is where Nynaeve/Mat/Elayne will arrive in Tanchico, and so I'm imagining we'll get Liandrin's backstory and the birth of Aludran, like what's been speculated at that one Tanchico still
Ep 6: I think we may get the chance to see Lan and Moiraine's initial bonding- we know Rafe is a New Spring lover
Ep 7: based on the past two seasons we'll get something related to Rand's birth. But this is the Two Rivers centric ep, I think, "Goldeneyes" So I think it'll be Tam bringing Rand and Kari home to the Two Rivers.
Ep 8: we gotta have our AoL flashback! I'm really thinking this is where we'll get a more up-close-and-personal look at the drilling of the Bore, meet Mierin at her most STEM and get that glimpse of her we saw in the trailer
I will be returning to score myself for accuracy, btw!

Spoilers for WoT S03E06 "The Shadow in the Night" + Book Spoilers
This was a really solid episode and if it hadn't been for 3x04 I would have said it were my favorite. There were a lot of things I was enthusiastic about.
The best scene was the confrontation between Rand and Egwene, followed by Sammael attacking, and then the golden part, something all of us book fans have been waiting for, Rand trying to revive a dead girl and failing, and his madness you're already seeing glimpses of. I was bawling my eyes out and kept saying 'no, no' when they mentioned Alsera. Wow. Again such a strong performance by Josha.
The Two Rivers storyline had beautiful scenes between Faile and Perrin and I was relieved that we finally got an alliance between the Whitecloaks and Ordeith/Padan Fain (it isn't really established what he calls himself yet). The big battle is coming up and I'm really excited for it. The only thing I didn't like was the healing of Alanna by Bode and Eldrin: I get they've a lot of potential but surely they aren't trained in healing a dying woman.
In Tanchico I adored the Compulsion scene, amazing. I liked seeing Liandrin's past, the Black Ajah shenanigans, Nynaeve getting drunk with Min (I would never have expected that). Ceara actually sung and I guess I could imagine Elayne doing that in public. Her accent as a Taraboner was terrific!
So, two more episodes to go, and I'm really curious how they're going to include the plot points I'm expecting. I hope Asmodean shows up in the Aiel Waste, maybe near Alcair Dal?

anyway, wotseries did a nice summary article of everything we know about s3 so far! most of it is already known, but there were a couple new tidbits i found interesting.
a baby was needed on the caemlyn palace set
rafe is the lead writer for episode 3x04; i think in previous seasons he only wrote the finales and the pilot, which makes me wonder if 3x04 is some kinda Big Deal episode. ooooh maybe this would point to rhuidean (which we know is either ep3 or 4)? he's said many times that TSR is his favorite book, so i could see him wanting to personally write the rhuidean episode.
rammy park, lead writer of 2x06, is the lead writer for 3x06. i'm very excited since 2x06 is my favorite episode so far!
they now have the writers for all the episodes if anyone is curious in digging further, but these were the ones that stood out to me
wotseries has reported "a question of crimson" as the 3x02 title and "he who comes with the dawn" as 3x08, but they said there's a possibility they're actually switched. and while HWCWTD does sound naturally like a Finale Title, if 3x02 is an intro to the waste/aiel prophecies and 3x08 includes the coup with elaida the red ousting siuan, i actually could see the titles being the reverse. (and all this with the caveat that episode titles are subject to change before the final product airs.)
the cairhien set was taken down after s2 filming, so likely no cairhien in s3
nuno lopes filmed at tocnik castle, and you Know my mind immediately went "spooky forsaken meeting place?" when i googled pictures, just to affirm my personal pre-drawn hypothesis that he's playing asmodean.
josha was in slovenia at one point, which is largely used for two rivers filming. flashback or dream/TAR sequence? i suppose there's also a chance he was just on vacation, they didn't explicitly say he was filming just that he was there.
wotseries expects fares fares to return!!!! very exciting if true!!!! glass columns, maybe, or an AOL cold open
they listed a bunch of cast/characters they expect to return, so i'll list only some of the less obvious ones: padan fain, valda, logain, adeleas, verin, tomas, nyomi (no word on yasicca), ryma, ila, raen, aram

Hey so I wanna talk about the two distinct types of evil present in WoT, the Dark one and Shadar Logoth.
These evils are similar in that they amplify negative emotions to the point that they boil over into cruelty and violence, where they differ however is that the emotions that draw people to them are born from different places, the dark one being an internal force where as Shadar Logoth relies on external forces.
The dark one is very classic satan allegory where the emotions he preys upon are the seven deadly sins. Greed, envy, lust, pride. The people who seek out the dark one and become dark friends usually feel like they are entitled to something that they aren’t receiving, whether that’s power, money, attention, knowledge- the dark one in turn offers them a way to achieve these goals they feel they deserve but evil is a corruptive force and eventually these feelings of envy and greed grow to the point where they no longer care about who gets hurt in the process of attaining their perceived just reward. The core of the Dark Ones evil is selfishness.
Shadar Logoth by contrast is a more “sympathetic” evil, born of feelings of anxiety and fear. Shadar Logoth was born from the people of Aridhol’s fears of the Trolloks and dark friends and as that paranoia grew they lashed out inwards and destroyed themselves. The evil of Shadar Logoth doesn’t make you violent or angry, the irritability and violence we associate it with are just side affects of the long lasting stress the evil does amplify. The core of Shadar Logoths evil is distrust.
These two types of evil while they do claim to despise eachother are not mutually exclusive however as we see Padan Faine seamlessly blend his greed and pride with Mordreth’s anxiety and fear, which feed on eachother until it developed into what we see him become where he’s callous and cruel, and specifically in the way he targets Rand, he “hates” Rand because of the anxiety that was born of failing the dark one and being tortured was amplified and mixed with his already present contempt and feelings of superiority.
However we see the flaws in the evil in the characters that manage to break out of the cycles of violence that they both feed on.
Verin, though she doesn’t go in with the intention of joining the dark went in with the selfish motivation of seeking out knowledge not for the good of the world but out of curiosity and boredom. She breaks away from the corruptive evil by her selfless act of sacrificing herself to bring to light the knowledge of the black ajah to the Tower.
Mat, is an interesting case because the corruptive nature of Shadar Logoth is more obvious. We see his fear amplified and it might be easy to say that the only reason he was freed from the evil was outside intervention and while that was what finished the job of cutting out the rot we also learn that he held up surprisingly well against the daggers corruption. He was able to last as long as he did because he was willing to be vulnerable and trust Rand. He was able to suppress many of the violent urges his fear created by sheer force of will because of the fact that he knew that he COULD trust someone which is antithetical to the evil of shadar logoth.
The two evils can survive on their own but they truly thrive in tandem and that was what made Faine so powerful that both the light and dark feared him. Because he exemplified all the worst parts of humanity all the fear, distrust, greed, envy and hate all personified into one being. The one thing however the destroys them both is in the most cliche of senses love, it is trust and kindness and selflessness that both evils can not defend against.

I have watched the scene where Mat blows the horn about 8 times now. This was a scene I’d waited all season for, and it was better than I could have hoped. They used it to build so much of Mat’s character. There’s something about when he turns and looks up at the heroes with tears in his eyes, it just gets me.
After the worst tea break ever, after Ishamael tells him he belongs to the dark, after Padan Fain taunts him with the dagger, telling him how weak he is, how he can’t escape his darkness, that he deserves it even. Mat still tries to get out and help his friends, even if he doesn’t have one single clue how. Then he gets stuck between a rock and an army and blows the horn because he doesn’t have any other choice. It’s all prime Mat.
Except he’s ta’veren for a reason. He blows the horn and remembers, not the twisted lives Ishamael showed him, or the sore spots Padan Fain poked at, but how he’d fought the darkness over and over again, that that’s who he really is.
The wonder in his voice when he says he remembers and turns to the dead heroes from all the stories he’d ever heard and says, “I’m one of you?” Just so wonderful.
Love me some beat down characters who think they’re good-for-nothing realizing they’re really actually very good and worthy. A+ Dónal Finn, I think he really found the heart of Mat.
