I think something neurotypicals just don’t understand is that autistic people HATE getting overwhelmed and that we are 10 times more embarrassed over it than you are. We don’t wake up and choose to have meltdowns in public, we don’t enjoy it at all. It’s a genuinely agonizing experience mixed with shame and humiliation.
When autistic overstimulation is brought up, it’s always about how the neurotypical people around us get embarrassed and weirded out by our meltdowns, and it’s never about how frustrating and terrifying the experience is for the person who had to experience it.
I dunno, I’m just looking back on my childhood and remembering how much I was shamed for breakdowns. Even as an adult to this day my family members love to bring up moments I had as a child when in reality I thought I was dying because I didn’t know how to cope with overstimulation at that age. What’s a funny story to them was an extremely stressful situation for me.
Anyways normalize researching how to help your autistic friends and family members when they have moments because we just want someone to understand that we hate it more than any neurotypical bystander ever could. I know it might be hard but just an effort means a lot to us. At the very least, don’t shame us and call us names for the symptoms of a disorder we never asked to have in the first place.
