Mp100 au - The whole basis for Reigen and Mob's mentor-mentee relationship is built on a lie that was good for the both of them. Mob needed to know a self-assured adult esper who understood that his powers can be dangerous and has thought about that constructively and productively, and Reigen needs a nephew-best-friend he can help teach and grow so he has a long-term social relation.

So it's a little difficult to think of who would fit the bill for Reigen - if I can figure that out, then I know who would be Mob.

Yusuke would be the one to leave the safe water bottle company and make his own office and lie about having ESP to a kid who needs guidance, I think. But would he break that character once he learned the kid DOES have powers? If he's an adult and assuming he grew up pretty okay (Reigen standards) then I imagine at most that he's having a moment of inner panic abt having lied abt this bc he thought the kid was fibbing. And then he looks at the kid being so hopeful and glad and he folds - he'll roll w it! The kid needs the lie right now.

Oh, Masaru could be a good choice? The very kid that Yusuke saves and dies for in canon! Another thought was Botan in a role-reversal au as well as mp100 au.

In that case I could see Yusuke as Mob and Shizuru and Botan having dual roles as Reigen (being the mentor: Shizuru, being the goofball w crazy charisma rolls: Botan)

Kuwabara siblings sharing the spot for Serizawa would be neat! They're very sensible in canon, both practice and encourage a normie life of studying and working despite their powers, so Serizawa's problem of finding it extremely difficult to control his powers due to his anxiety feel like a sufficient background for what would push them into a terrorist organisation.

Hina as Soichirou... She's been dead too often in my aus and concepts, Rui usually taking the spotlight, it's time for "oh no it's worse when they Lived". Epic divorce-woman ftw. Rui fulfills Shimazaki's powers of teleportation and knows where Yukina is at all times. She would really like Yukina to just stop trying to convince her mother not to be a terrorist anymore. For plot reasons she'll sometimes help Hina out in her plans if it doesn't negatively interfere w the twins' lives.

Hiei as Takenaka who is distressed abt his sister repeatedly running away to pursue their birth mother who at this point kinda scares him and he's not seen her in years. Also very isolated in being an ESP-kid and having no one else like him to talk to, upset to learn the Telepathy club is a lie. We don't see him for SO MANY episodes and when he returns as the twin brother of the There-are-so-many-things-wrong-with-this-child (Yukina).

Kurama might be part of Claw to help out his mother... Perhaps he is a Serizawa? (Speaking like these are actors for a theatre production) Koenma is the child in claw w the wooden dolls who cries when they get OP-broken.

I love Yusuke btw but I can't stand when a MC from one series is transferred as the MC of a different series for an au simply bc the character is the MC. It's just so automatic. I personally also like to use Mob for drawing studies when deciding how to draw Yukina's expressions and write her thoughts and actions, but it also grates on me to spend more than 10 minutes to just switch all the character roles for the personalities most similar (why not just go watch the original...). This is the hater in me! Sometimes I find her.

May 30th - 16:33 - Afterschool

Ren was still in the middle of hastily reading Futaba’s texts from hours ago when he opened the door to his family home and found his mother pacing in the genkan.

“...Mom, wha-?”

“I got a call from your school,” she says instead of hello. Ren freezes. Mona shifts in his bag. There’s silence for a second too long, but his mother quickly catches his tense posture and readjusts her approach. There haven’t been any arguments in a week and she doesn’t want to make this a new one.

“The counselor said you were fighting with a first-year,” she starts in a more inviting tone, but she tenses when she sees how quickly Ren’s cautious neutral face shifts into a frown.

“I-I just want to know what happened,” she says.

Ren releases an angry huff instead of turning around and leaving because he recognizes that his mother isn’t trying to jump to conclusions--that she trying to hear his side--but he still has hours worth of bad emotions at the forefront of his mind, so he kicks off his sneakers without undoing the laces and haphazardly drops them on the shoe rack before he allows himself to say anything.

Of course, because he is an angry idiot, his first response is: “There was no fight. It was just an argument,” and he snaps his mouth closed because that is exactly what a delinquent guilty of starting a fight would say and Makoto would be so disappointed in him right now. Morgana delivers her phantom message with a disapproving really, Joker?

His mother guiltily shifts her hands, one eyebrow twitching at Morgana’s muffled meow.

“I just used the words of the counselor,” she amends, gesturing for Ren to enter the family room. 

When they enter, she sits at one side of the rickety couch and pats the other seat. She smiles with some invitation, a dash of hesitance, and a sprinkle of uncertainty as if she has no clue how to speak to her teenage son. She looks at him sort of like he’s a child, but at least she doesn’t seem afraid of him like she was before Golden Week.

Ren joins her at the couch, releases Morgana on to the space between them so he doesn’t have to think about the distance, and conjures up how he can best explain the events of the morning in the least incriminating way (shouldn’t have to, he thinks, didn’t do nothing wrong in the first place) but his mother recognizes his thinking face before he can start.

“W-whatever you say, I’ll believe you, sweetie,” she encourages honestly. He can tell she means it because she tucks her hands in between her knees and tilts her legs in the picture perfect display of humble motherliness to hide how her legs would bounce otherwise. He turns to face her a bit, legs spread out and back slouched in a show of teenage indifference, despite his nervous right leg and the rhythmic flickers of light that bounce off of his phone case as he deftly spins his smartphone in his left hand.

“You mean that?” he can’t help but ask, belying his blase posture.

His mother nods with lips pursed, proving to her son that she has no intention of speaking over him. Emboldened yet reluctant, Ren begins the recount of his day at school.

    Ren slides into his seat while Hamuko and Ryuji chatter away about beef bowl places. Their enthusiastic discussion about cheap, fast, good food is not helping Ren’s patience or hunger. Usually Ren’s been in charge of the food prep because he’s the only one who knows how to make something all of the Thieves plus Hamuko will eat, but when they left Kamoshitty City today, Theodore pleasantly requested if he could make a recipe he’s been working on, which Hamuko had endorsed immediately.

    Ren agreed because Theodore is really hot and the thought of him buzzing around the kitchen is appealing enough, but around 40 minutes later, Ren is very hungry and is cursing his inability to disagree with tall hot people. To distract himself, he tries to brainstorm ways to free Haru and Makoto from Kamoshit-man’s unproportionately buff grasp, but his brain keeps snapping back to his teammates’ loud discussions and Theodore in a heart apron and himself in a cute pinafore sharing a festival smoothie--the romantic ones with the heart shaped straw--under the setting sun. He doesn’t even like smoothies.

    From the other corner of the weird theater lunch tables Futaba sends him a blank look that implies that she can hear his raging gay thoughts. Ren sticks his tongue out at her, and to Futaba’s left, Nagi raises a thin eyebrow and points at herself as though she thought he was talking to her. Embarrassed but never one to lose, Ren sticks out his tongue again at her paired with a flirtatious wink. At the head of the table beside Ren, Akechi makes a face. Futaba gags. Unaffected, Nagi returns her attention to Yusuke’s analysis of Hamuko’s preferred color palette for her hypothetical thief costume.

    Ren’s phone buzzes in his pocket, and he fishes it out, wondering how someone managed to text him while he’s in a magical dimension theater metaphor place. He quickly gives up that train thought when he sees Futaba’s SNS username. A quick glance up shows that she’s pointedly staring at her phone, so he swipes open the message.

    “Food’s ready!” Theodore announces over Ren and Futaba’s unsubtle snickers. Somehow, Theodore has acquired two shining serving platters.

    “Theo, you’re the best!” Hamuko says, standing up immediately to help him serve because she (and Haru) is the sweetest person in the universe.

    “Thanks,” Ren tacks on because he’s ‘in charge’ and he’s supposed to ‘set good examples’. He does not, however, stand up to help because he is lazy.

    The rest of the group is already chorusing thank yous and crowding around the food like hungry animals. Makoto is not around to tell them that they’re acting like children. Akechi is patiently waiting for everyone to get out of the way before he serves himself, which is probably a smarter idea than Ren who’s walking around the table so he can insert himself between Ann and Ryuji, the most destructive eaters of their current group. Yusuke, another main offender however justified, already has a bowl full of what appears to be noodles, veggies, and chicken covered in a savory sauce.

Hey so! I’ve been wanting to share one of my Kurama(yu yu hakusho) headcanons for a while, but have been too lazy(and scared) to put it into words and share it w/ my followers ahah. But i’m finally gonna share it..! This is one of my headcanons that’s most crucial to how I interpret his character... and I want to preface this with saying that everyone has a different interpretation of a character, and that’s ok; u don’t have to agree. Interpretations can feel very personal sometimes...this one means a lot to me personally haha. Anyway, here goes: (BIG SPOILER WARNING!!!)

Basically... I think the current Kurama, “Shuichi” Kurama with the red hair, is LITERALLY a different person than he was in the past, due to the unique way he escaped death by merging with the unborn child of a human woman, and that his current personality makes a lot of sense if you think of him... as a fusion, in a sense... kinda like a Steven Universe fusion(not exactly, but hear me out)...

The present day Kurama is shown to be a really different person than the legendary thief Yoko Kurama. This difference becomes starkly apparent when the Yoko Kurama of the past makes his appearances in the dark tournament, and he’s very sadistic, cruel... very different from the Kurama shown until then. 

Although the current Kurama has the same memories and consciousness, intelligence, etc. and is still fully “Kurama”, and a 1000+ year old demon, he also seems to act...like a normal teenage boy. He giggles, jokes around, cares a lot about his friends, and of course, loves his human mother... 

Hiei describes Kurama in an internal monologue in ep 47, and it’s very interesting...

Kurama also describes himself in this way, in the same ep:

Although not in the manga, Kurama also says this in ep 108:

When Kurama talks about how he’s changed since being reborn, and how he’s become a different person...  I think... it's more than just a change of heart. He's literally a different person, because his soul merged with that of the boy who would have been born as Minamino Shuichi.

And moreover, Kurama himself seems to be aware of this? in the way he describes himself...the whole “we’re merged,” “while I am Kurama, I am also Minamino Shuichi,” “no longer the same Kurama that I used to be”... And perhaps most convincingly, in this line he delivers in “Two Shots”: 

Specifically describing himself as having a “human side”, despite also explaining to Yusuke in his introduction that he is fully a demon, despite his human appearance. 

Given his wisdom and intelligence, retained from his past as Yoko Kurama, this--his self-identity--is surely something he’s thought hard about over the years, and this is the conclusion he’s come to... Even though he is classified as a demon, this is the way he describes himself... as a fusion of sorts, as being part “human”... (and Hiei’s description is mostly likely influenced from what Kurama has told him, along with his own understanding of Kurama). 

The current Kurama shows a profound duality, and it makes him such a fascinating character... in certain moments, he shows a coldness, a brutality, a willingness to take lives, and wisdom and intelligence that certainly goes far beyond his human years. Yet... stuff like how he giggles and jokes, and how he outsmarted Kaito by making a funny face... to me, this is something new... something unique to his current self...something the old Yoko Kurama wouldn’t do. 

The way Kurama acts in the present day...  the way he's 100% a demon, yet distinctly...human... makes so much sense if you think of him as being like a fusion?? When “he merged with the body of the human who would have been born as Minamino Shuichi”, I think their souls also merged. (edit: This also makes sense if you consider that in his severely wounded state, Yoko Kurama was essentially reduced to a bare soul, disembodied and dying--If this fusion between his dying spirit and this fresh, living human soul did not take place, he would not have survived. The unborn baby is not yet conscious, so Kurama’s concsiousness took over completely, but the fusion still occurred...)

Kurama is still Kurama-- but there’s something added, something more.  I think the human who would have been born as Shuichi would have been a very gentle person... so some of that got absorbed into Kurama's soul when they merged... and so his current, softer personality is not JUST a cruel demon who got touched by human kindness and had a change of heart... but a fusion of the original yoko’s personality, and the personality of the human boy he merged with. He did have a change of heart, but this was facilitated by him gaining... a new capacity for feelings? in a sense? due to this fusion. 

This interpretation I have of him... it makes me feel so much for him...b/c even tho he's...not the same person anymore, he still has the same memories and consciousness; he both is, and isn't, the same person.  I think it probably contributes to the guilt and self hatred he feels on some level, which is evident in what he tells Yusuke in the beginning...

It’s true that he said he tried many times to leave throughout his life, to return to his previous life in the demon realm, but it’s also true that he was never able to. His mother’s smile, her sacrifice for him, her genuine warmth and love for him... it moved him, and he decided to stay, and to protect her and the things precious to him now. And I argue that the “human” side of him, the result of a fusion of souls, enhanced his capacity to be moved, weakened his resolve to return to his past life...

When other yokai accuse him of "going soft"... that's not quite what happened...it is, in some ways, but not the full story. Although he is still the ancient, 1000+ year old demon Kurama, and retains all his memories and sense of self... there is still a part of him, a new part, that really IS as young as he looks... one that is gentle, empathetic, kind, and constantly haunted by his past.

In some ways, this added layer of softness can be seen as a fallibility, an exploitable weakness... how convenient, for the cruel and merciless, cold and calculating thief to become “soft”... a soft point, a weak point, where there was only hardness before. But,

Kurama himself believes it is a strength. Although I do think he harbors some level of hidden self hatred, he doesn’t hate this side of himself. In fact, he embraces it, is proud of it, and will fight to protect what he has now with his life on the line. He has found people and things he wants to protect... he’s come to see the beauty of the human world around him, even the mundane... he’s come to see the beauty and power in something as simple and fragile as a rose. 

And the important people in Kurama’s life(e.g. Hiei), unlike the yokai who jeer and mock him, also see this part of him as a strength and not a weakness, and accept him as who he is today. 

Kurama has a war in his heart... and this inner conflict and duality makes so much sense with the fusion interpretation. Itsuki makes this observation:

“affection” and “carnage”... two sides of himself, at war... consistent with his past life of violence and cruelty, and the gentle human soul he merged with that literally made him a different person...  But again he’s still “Kurama”; he’s 100% yokai, not a human, and he remembers everything.

This headcanon of mine is why it doesn’t really feel right to me when I see people joke that Kurama’s just an old guy hanging out with a bunch of kids (like that steve buscemi meme lol). Again, in my interpretation... in some ways he IS just a teenage boy... even though he’s 1000+... which is why it makes sense that he genuinely enjoys having friends his “own age”... it’s more than just a facade of pretending to be a kid, I think. 

And I mean...just look at him. HE...... IS BABIE 🥺🥺🥺

TL;DR I see the current Kurama as literally being a fusion of souls, literally “not the same Kurama” as before, and this colors the way I interpret him haha,,,

OK THIS POST IS ALREADY LONG AS ASS, WHY NOT MAKE IT EVEN LONGER BC THERE’S SMTH ELSE i WANTED TO POINT OUT

This might be unique to the anime, but it fits in nicely with my headcanon... In the original Japanese cast, Kurama(as Shuichi) is voiced by Megumi Ogata, and the Yoko Kurama of the past is voiced by Shigeru Nakahara (i.e., when he appears in the dark tournament, and in subsequent flashbacks to Kurama’s past). However, when Kurama transforms into his yoko form on his own in the Chapter Black arc, not by the influence of the potion that literally turns back time...he keeps his Megumi Ogata voice even in that form... whereas in flashbacks he's consistently voiced by Shigeru Nakahara.  ITS A REALLY NICE TOUCH....and it confirms what he says when he's like i haven't actually reverted back, my body just transformed due to my heightened yoki.

And not only his voice, he even looks different... his yoko form is given a slightly different design in Chapter Black arc. In the dark tournament, his outfit is sleeveless, he has frayed eyebrows, and his ears are smooth.

These differences are shown in this production note from the anime, indicating that this was a conscious design choice in the anime:

Anyway, these are very subtle details, but to me they’re another indicator that even in his yoko form he's not the same Kurama as he was before...!

WonFes Postmortem

Alright yall remember the bingo card I made a few days ago for my wonfes hopes?

turns out I did pretty good!!!

I did kinda shoot myself in the foot by dedicating a whole row to non-garage kit Granblue figures but... Granblue represents a pretty significant chunk of what I care about these days lmao. (Some optimistic part of me wonders if they’re holding off gbf figure announcements until the 5th anniversary in a few weeks...)

While there were many announcements/updates I was happily surprised by, there were a few things I’d been rly hoping to see but didn’t.... namely, a kotobukiya scale figure of Dawn. They’ve done all the girl protags except Dawn and Crys so far; since I don’t really think they’re going to make one of Crys at this point, I was hoping we’d finally get Dawn... alas, Koto’s big Pokemon announcement this wonfes was.... Professor Oak??? To say I’m disappointed would be the understatement of the century tbh!!!!! (like, I get it, I get why they went with Oak. Kanto hype is big rn and his voice actor just died recently. I get it. I’m still REALLY mad that they skipped Dawn)

Disappointments aside, we had some pretty big winners this wonfes!!! As usual, here’s my highlights:

Announcements 

There were some pretty huge announcements this time around!! Figma and Nendoroid Goro Akechi are all a fangirl could really hope for, and I’m really, really happy to see that GSC decided to make the whole main party in P5 (esp considering they’ve skimped on persona figures before... no, I am still not over never getting P4 protag). I may be considering quitting figmas, but I may also get the Akechi one for my Joker, who knows? Nendo Akechi is gonna be an insta-buy though holy shit.

Also... all 12 Hypmic boys were announced as nendoroids!! I actually had a vague premonition a few weeks ago that we’d get Hypmic figures this wonfes but not like this!!!!! (I put Jakurai on my highlights bc he’s the only one I care about)

I put down nendo Amaterasu not bc I’m personally interested in it, but I have friends who were really excited about it. Also, I am kinda curious how they’re going to make a nendoroid out of a wolf! 

Finally, I’m really glad that GSC could announce a Mutsunokami nendo with a prototype already made ;u; that swordboy deserves more love

Unpainted Prototypes

I mentioned Mutsu already, but I was also happy with a lot of the unpainted prototypes revealed this wonfes. (Not listed here were nendoroid Ann, nendoroid Hachisuka, and another scale figure of Arthur Pendragon; also cool, but not quite highlight tier). I’m glad nendoroid Mai-senpai is coming out so cute! And of course, I was pleasantly surprised to see Goodsmile shouting shuake rights with their photo of the Crow and Joker scales together. I prob won’t be buying them (I don’t like the poses that much) but I’m glad to see GSC is starting to realize that if you put the ships together, the fangirls will come in droves.

The most important prototype on this list though -  Flare’s Oswald emerges from the ether after almost 3 years of silence!!! Unfortunately I’m now long past the point of caring enough about Odin Sphere to buy him (thats what you get for taking so long flare) but I’m still happy to see he hasn’t been forgotten or canceled.

Painted Prototypes

aaaand here’s where more of the heavy hitters come in. Romani was in a similar boat as Oswald (wonfes after wonfes passing without a single update after the announcement) so I’m happy to see him done and painted!! He’s cuter than I was prepared for!!

Ozymandias was bound to be a winner after his unpainted prototype was shown off at Animate Girls Fest last fall, and it looks like Megahouse knocked it out of the park this time too! He’s so handsome!!!! His pose is absolutely killer, and the paint is amazing.

Speaking of amazing paint... Altair’s Merlin is out here looking like a goddamn dream!!! I wasn’t going to buy him bc I have the nendoroid already, but scale Merlin’s hair came out so beautiful.... It really brings out the ephemeral quality of Merlin as a character. I might have to start putting money away in anticipation of his undoubtedly high price.......

I’d been considering swearing off scales for a while after I preordered Altair’s Arthur, but these three have made me deeply reconsider!!!!

Other highlights: Nendoroid Yusuke looks really good!! And I had to include the noodle-sitting Nitocris bc she’s just so cute!!! nito might be the closest thing I have to a fate wife

All in all, it was a pretty successful wonfes for me!! Lots to look forward to and be excited about and save up for. I probably won’t buy everything on my highlights list, but nendo Jakurai and Akechi are definitely winners, and I’ll likely end up buying one of those fate scales too... or all of them....

Upon returning home we can infer Yusuke wants Keiko, a shower, kuwabara, and a chocolate milkshake, in that order. I feel you buddy, I feel you.

Kuwabara hair also looks much better. Did genkai send him home with conditioner recs when she fixed him up and sent him off?

Dub says Genkai made Yusuke sleep with snakes for 3 weeks, which is awful but makes no sense. Subs say he slept on a bed of needles. Probably for the entire time if were being honest.

Yusuke is still lying to his Best Friend about the shit he's up to. I think this is the arc where that shit don't fly no more

Keiko is 300% okay with Kuwabara third Wheeling her first date in sixth months. I wonder if they hung out at all while yuskue was gone this time. Getting out if the fire and running from the cops while Yusuke was dead must've formed some kind of bond between them, right?

Semi confirmed: "I haven't seen Keiko this happy in months" reports Kuwabara. They've at least been in touch.

what’s a song that means a lot to you?

not really a song, but there’s a sound heard from the ships as they set sail... not ALL ships make the same sound, and there’s this specific sound few ships make that makes me feel really nostalgic. i can’t really describe it but it’s a sound different from the common howl, it’s kind of like a melody and i’ve heard it a handful of times in my hometown. that’s the only place where i’ve heard it and i’m not even sure if it’s the same ship or two or three. but yeah, there’s that.

what’s a trend you don’t understand?

god, i am really clumsy and useless when im not at work and i have really bad luck. a lot of shit always happens to me but recently the sole of my shoes wore out while i was on an uber ride to meet with friends and all the while i was crying inside and when i got off the car i tripped then i hid behind a car in the parking lot so no one saw me change shoes and then i went to the restaurant i was supposed to meet with my pals but it was the wrong place and the dude was like “miss... we’re literally under construction, dont u see the men working” and i just XDDD. man, it was so embarrassing im still not over it.

as a child, i really enjoyed playing on the beach with my sister. we would run from one side to the other and jump and do backflips without fear because the sand was a soft landing. we didn’t hold back in any way. it was sort of liberating, in a way. for a child, any kind of place where you don’t have to worry about getting hurt or having your mom telling you to not be too hasty is a treasure on its own, so when looking back, these are the moments and games i enjoyed the most.

i don’t like concerts, really. crowds make me really sick and i can’t handle it so there’s really no one i’d like to see in a concert. i do enjoy watching the concerts on the screen though, so i’d say the performances i like the most are all from My Chemical Romance lol

I don't think I've ever noticed before how neat Kaneshiro's palace music is. Well, at least the Laundering Office, anyway. What is this, exactly? It's some version of Price - that's the same melody line, but the instrumentation is all different. That's not to say that Price isn't good; it's just that I'm weak for strings & orchestra instruments in non- orchestral songs. It sounds darker and more intense. I love it
