for the last year, I saved up so I could spend my summer finally making the Minor Vamp comic, only to still end up having to spend my summer desperately trying to get commissions and working on them so I can make enough to pay bills and get my cat new meds. I probably won't be able to afford furniture like, at all. I still want to at least start drawing and get 1 chapter done, but I'm so fucking disappointed that I can't spend all my time focusing on that and on learning how to use blender/animate!

I think people are definitly less tolerant of amy than of these other male character but i also can partly attribute that to the fact that shes a women taking advantage of the oppression against women thereby not only harming men who are innocent, but also harming other women. If her husband really was abusive then I would be 100% behind her in a fictional context, it's the lies that get to me.
i cant speak about those other movies as well, id have to watch/rewatch them, but i know that the new joker specifically would be as controversial as gone girl because it deals also specifically with mentall illness and discrimination. joker uses this in order to act out his hateful fantasies and while the movie has a point, the character also embodies all the negative stereotypes of mentally ill people. out of control, vicious, untrustworthy, and unpredictable, but the joker actually was mentally ill, which makes it worse almost. in gone girl i dislike amy dunne the character, in joker i cant stand how out of touch the directors and writers were.
Hmmm that's a good point. Because like I've said before, I like having irredeemable villains sometimes. Even if they came from a place of understanding or oppression, because some things are fucked up and unforgivable. And some don't want to be forgiven. And I think it's a very interesting thing to explore and it's something that has been done much more with men than women in the past. Most of the time when it's done with men, it's not well done. There are some standouts and even those are incredibly controversial (like Joker, as you brought up, and the movie it partially copied, Taxi Driver, was also controversial and inspired some real life killings and attempts), so it's not surprising that the first real mainstream attempts at creating unhinged female characters are controversial and even bad.
But I do agree that Gone Girl definitely takes on a different type of anger that isn't typically explored. And not only that, she's not justified in her actions. She's taking things to extremes when there is no reason to do so, and she's turning historical oppression against women into a weapon. Both she and her husband talk in their dual narration in the book (and director David Fincher and their actors, Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike) a lot about the roles that we play in life, in relationships, in gender roles, in society. It's interesting and she takes it to an extreme and does awful, surprising things with the oppression she's turned into power. Except, she's playing into the stereotypes that she's subverting. Like previous anon said, she uses her femininity and her beauty and false abuse allegations and even a child as a weapon. I think Amy was intentionally created and portrayed as a complete misogynist to create that irony. To show how absurd it was. Amy wasn't breaking gender roles but enforcing them, while also breaking norms.
Mini TL;DR: Amy Dunne is a bad person and the writers know this. Some fans apparently do not. Fight Club syndrome 2.0.
Also some of those movies are worth watching more than others, but are useful for a comparison imo. (If you want specific recs let me know what you like and let me know and if you have any to give also hmu.)
But about Joker (2019), I think you're right. I may have discounted just how controversial it was and still is in a previous post. It's definitely incredibly contentious and deservedly so. Gone Girl and Fight Club director David Fincher said that Joker is "a betrayal of the mentally ill." I think he's right. It's another of those movies that is controversial and inaccurate and a bad example but still is enjoyable...you know? Which is also deeply frustrating. But I am but a problematic human. I think that lots of people found his character sympathetic but it also did damage, but that damage is hard to measure, you know? It also took a lot from 70s/80s Martin Scorsese movies (especially Taxi Driver and King of Comedy) about mentally ill people but Joker sensationalized them for sure. And weren't Scorsese's movies controversial enough to begin with? (Again, I love those movies. But they are not without their flaws.)
I also agree with what you said about disliking Amy Dunne's character in Gone Girl but disliking the production/writing/directing of Joker. That's pretty spot-on and understandable.

just realised i haven’t written down any of my initial thoughts/theories from the perfectionists pilot so here goes before tonight’s ep probably proves me completely wrong
nolan’s killer
my first thought was claire (she’s shady af), but the more i think about the parallels they set up between ali and taylor, the more i think taylor might’ve pushed him? i’m not entirely sure why at this point - maybe a possible motive might become clearer as the show goes on - and if nolan did text ali to meet him then i’m not really sure why he’d trust her already, unless he already knows her? unless it’s just because he knows her past and thought she could help?
but considering ali gets the text from nolan asking to meet him in tonight’s preview, surely it’s possible that he could’ve mistaken taylor for her on the roof? after all, they kept reminding us how alike they both look and it was dark... maybe he didn’t realise she wasn’t ali until it was too late. that’s my theory for now anyway, although i’m sure it’ll change every ep as we find out more
(another wilder theory - if mona does know taylor is alive and is possibly in a relationship with her as people are speculating, is it possible that he could’ve asked to meet mona thinking she could help but taylor intercepted it and went there to kill him? sounds crazy but you never know with pll)
mona’s involvement
well i called the whole talking-to-people-through-mirrors thing from the first scene... it was clear to me that they were trying to make us think mona was losing it again. the most obvious suggestion imo is that claire/bhu know mona’s past and probably hired her for that, so they got her on side to “help” them (for what purposes idk yet) - but they’re exploiting her mental illness to get her to spy for them, despite knowing how dangerous that could be, and she’s gonna end up starting to spiral for real. and i think ali will be the one either to figure it out or who mona confides in to try and make sense of it all, which is where they’ll grow closer
but i also wouldn’t discount the theory that mona’s imagining all of this, especially after the “safe place” line that sounds suspiciously like a therapist - i really hope it isn’t that, purely because i just want them to write mona’s mental illness properly for once and give some decent rep, but i wouldn’t put it past them and it would fit with how they tend to write her character
oh and the line about her reasons for being in paris “escaping her”? obviously we’re meant to think that means alex and mary are on the loose somewhere (which i’m all here for if it means i get troian on tp at some point for flashbacks), but i’m still not 100% convinced the dollhouse in paris was real... maybe she imagined the whole scenario, and she’s been in therapy for it (which is all going to be undone by claire’s manipulation)? so she might think she’s better and that she’s working to try and find out the truth about something for beacon guard, but it could still all be a hallucination (but i’d much rather it not be)
either way, janel is absolutely killing this season already and i cannot wait for what’s to come - this is her time to shine and i couldn’t be more proud
other random thoughts
• the car that followed nolan to taylor’s cabin wasn’t mona’s - could it have been claire? especially if she did kill him
• caitlin seems too obvious a suspect, but I would love for the perfectionists to not actually be the victims this time and to be involved somehow
• they’re definitely setting up possible pll cameos in season two (particularly emily - i feel like towards the end of the season we’ll see ali try to reconnect with her)
• it crossed my mind from the taylor similarities that there’s still a chance they could somehow link it back to bethany young/her being related to ali somehow (yes it’s far fetched but this is pll)
• from the secrecy and the way they’ve all been hinting, i’m convinced mona’s new love interest is a girl (we been knew forever that she’s decidedly not straight so it’s what she deserves)
• ali and mona’s friendship is everything we’ve deserved since season one pll and it’s already the heart and soul do the show as far as i’m concerned
• i’m in love with eli brown
that’s all i can really remember but hopefully i’ll be back with more thoughts after the next ep - if anyone wants to chat about theories etc feel free to hmu!!

hey everyone !!  i’m noah and i’m hella hype to be here--- i have such a soft spot for smaller groups like this one and i can’t wait to get into this mess. finley is a totally new character for me but it’s a concept i’ve wanted to try out for ages, and kept almost applying with him to various groups, so i’m excited to finally get to try him out !!!  i’ll try and keep his intro concise but you will learn quickly that i have never learned how to be quiet or restrained ever.
( froy gutierrez, cis male, he/him. ) — finley nieves has been a medina complex resident for one month, now. they’re twenty-one years old, and they tend to be hard to find when you’re looking for them. sometimes when i walk by c12, i hear locked and loaded by lael. lately, i’d say they’re pretty resilient, but sometimes that’s overwhelmed by the fact that they’re capricious. i mean, they usually pay their rent on time, though, and that’s most important fact here. worn-out soles of sneakers, far-away city lights behind the window of a bus, a name and photo in a wallet that doesn’t quite seem to belong to anyone, the smell of smoke and cold air in the collar of a coat.
tws : organized crime, guns.
finley had a life path set out for him since he was little, but not the same sort that most career-driven families create for their children. the nieves had made something of a name for themselves among the criminal sort, never particularly high-ranking or respected but simply so deep-rooted in that world that it would be impossible to discount their importance.
when finley was growing up, he didn’t think much of this. his family wasn’t wealthy from their occupation but they weren’t struggling either--- their stresses didn’t come from money, but instead from the constant agitation that came alongside their profession, the worry over arrests and betrayals and enemies with vendettas. they kept locks on their doors and a gun in the hall closet and called this normal, so finley believed it to be.
he was raised into the lifestyle in such a seamless way that he didn’t even really realize it was happening at first. finley was taught things that he assumed to be commonplace ; how to hold his keys in his fist like a weapon, or keep his heart rate steady through a lie detector test, or fire a gun with wicked accuracy, or read when someone wasn’t telling him the whole truth.
his family was big, and it was tight-knit. finley didn’t have any direct siblings but he had cousins that were all around enough that it might as well have counted, a constant tangle and overlap of relatives passing through their guest room and crashing on their couch and vanishing for days at a time when trouble caught up to them. the nieves bloodline was a tangled network of stepmothers and grand-nephews and third cousins once removed--- when someone new showed up in his dining room for breakfast and claimed their relation, finley knew better than to question it.
the gravity of their family business didn’t come to weigh on finley for years, but when the realization hit it landed like a semitruck. he was fifteen, and while he’d heard cautionary tales of relatives who’d been caught by police or bitter rivals, he’d never seen it unfold firsthand until then. if asked about it now he would only have the vaguest things to say for any of it--- shapeless memories of hiding under the bed as someone broke down the door in the next room, a knife in the wall from a missed attack from the pissed-off intruder, the sirens that came flooding in from the street, the man who got a good look at his face before being pulled away at gunpoint. finley had never felt unsafe until that point, as his parents had always assured him that they’d never let anything bad happen to him, but with both of them suddenly gone and arrested, that peace of mind had dissipated. there were people who knew him, who expected things of him, or who hoped to see him hurt simply because of his last name, and finley wanted none of it.
at age sixteen, he bolted. he’d seen where his path was steering him, and he wanted no part of it. so he took his name and a few stacks of bills from beneath the bathroom sink, traded them in for a half-dozen aliases across a handful of fake ids, and set out running.
he doesn’t like to settle for long. he rarely stays anywhere for more than a few months at a time, as he finds it’s harder to keep up with any fake history the more people there are around to question after him. because of this, he is also very hesitant to get close to new people--- as a sort of self-defense, a necessity, and a habit.
while his real name is finley nieves, it’s very rare that anyone actually knows those two for him together. the nieves are not famous by any means, but they do have enough of a widespread reputation to be known among a few circles that finley would prefer to stay distanced from. on his lease he is listed as finley weaver, and that’s likely the name most of the others around the complex would know him as. he has countless aliases he cycles through for security, and will adopt and drop new ones as he sees fit, but he has his favorites--- often ‘weaver’ for a last name, and ‘alexander’ as a first.
it’s likely he’s told everyone else a slightly different story as to how he ended up where he is. all of them are lies, to some degree, and none of them explain strange scars or the ease of which he can pick a lock or the tenseness in his frame when someone gives him too dirty a look.
uhhH honestly i have a lot more to say about him but this is already long as hell, thank you if you have read this far
tldr ; son of a crime family up and runs one day, spends the next few years flipping through fake names and identities and never landing anywhere for long. seems normal enough in passing, a pretty easygoing type who’s willing to share cigarettes and meaningless conversation, but probably has strange things to notice--- the sort of person that you would be surprised to know keeps a handgun by their bed, one that probably shouldn’t be asked about.
i have a couple super vague connection ideas, a list i’m hoping to expand on more sometime but for now here are just a handful :
anyone who has met him in the past, even in passing, especially if he was using a different name then than he is now.
a closer friend or romantic interest that he can be kind of hot and cold with, cause he’s honestly pretty good-natured but he can go quiet really fast when he realizes that he’s probably just going to up and disappear again soon.
fwb !!!  hookups !  ill-advised one-night-stands !!  he’s here for it and so am i, what can i say.
someone he feels weirdly protective of ?
a neighbor who’s probably seen some weird shit.
anyone who is suspicious™ cause honestly he can be a little sketchy.
someone who just helps him relax--- that can either fall under that hookup umbrella or something totally platonic, who just gets him to not mope around so much or just worry less about always looking over his shoulder.
idk other stuff !!  hmu if you have ideas cause honestly i’ll probably be on board
