How To Save Your Old Shit After Floods

Hi, Tumblr. My reach is small and I am but a poor archivist who can't afford Blaze, so please boost this.

Author's note: I hate to have to add this, but cultural heritage is inherently political and this made it to TERFblr somehow so... The author is nonbinary. Go get your own archivist to teach you if you're gonna be like that.

The west coast of the US is flooding, and while it might seem unimportant in the face of people dying, getting stranded, and being without power, a lot of people are also going to lose personal history to flooding. This gets talked about a lot in the context of hurricanes, but we should all know what to do to save our pictures and documents, too.

Knowing what to do before it happens is crucial to actually saving things. Read this stuff now! Like to save! Bookmark it! Screen cap it! Idc but keep it handy (and remember you might not have online access when you need it)!

The FEMA guide does a really good job at explaining how to dry things, but the basics are:

Separate, separate, separate. While it's still wet if you can do so without causing further damage. Salvage color photos before black and white, paper backing before plastic film. Pre-gelatin silver (black and white on paper) photographs (collodion, ambrotype, cyanotype, etc.) get priority, but most people don't have those. Remove items from frames of they show signs of water damage. Take off dust jackets, unfolder documents, etc.

Rinse with clean, bottled water if there is mud or other debris. Use a dish pan, fill it with a little water, and slip photos in carefully for a short little bath. Dip, dip, dip if you need a little agitation to remove mud, but don't wipe or swish (unless it's REALLY stuck and you're okay with the possibility of damage). Change your water often, and try to avoid agitating things or touching the image side. It is recommended to hold books closed to protect the textblock from more water when you rinse. Obviously, don't soak things. Photos are probably your most fragile material and can be submerged for up to 48 hours before it gets really hard to save them, so you don't want to add to that time.

Spread it all out. Get creative with how you keep things apart. Hang things if they can take the strain, but remember that the corners are the weakest points of paper and photos. Books can be tented on clotheslines if the binding is still sturdy (pages aren't coming loose. If they are, see the next point)

Interleave books with paper towels every 1/4 inch of pages or so. If you can, fan them out and stand them upright. Change the paper towels as they get damp (and idk, use them for cleaning tasks. Shit's expensive)

Get air moving. Indirect airflow from a fan is best. Avoid fluttering. I face my fan into a wall or upwards to diffuse the air flow.

Some staining is likely. Dried mud can be brushed from paper like book textblocks but shouldn't be brushed from photographs, so rinse photos first.

Photograph materials while they're wet and still intact. If you should lose something while salvaging, at least you have a photograph of it so it's not lost forever.

If you cannot dry things immediately, wrap individual items or small clumps that are stuck together in wax paper (ideally. Parchment can work, plastic wrap or ziplocs if you have to) and PUT IT IN A FREEZER. Not an ice chest. The goal is to freeze the water, and ice chests will soak it. Freezing buys you time. It halts water damage until you can deal with things. When it's time to dry, unwrap your items and allow them to fully thaw before even thinking about separating them.

If you find mold, quarantine those materials in sealed plastic bags and freeze. You need professional help. It is not worth getting sick because you tried to clean mold without appropriate protection!

ETA: These techniques also work on that book you dropped in the bathtub or spilled a soda on, just sayin'.

Both girls turned and spotted the mature figure of Aramella standing by the entrance. She approached, hands together as dignified as could be, but wearing a smug expression. “I don’t doubt you’re a good fighter, Cerris, but it takes more than that to be a teacher.”

“You’re not wrong,” Cerris agreed wearily.

“Besides, you’re trying to teach her how to use your weapons. An elegant sabre is not the same as a strong axe and a sturdy shield.”

“Well, she’s the only teacher I have,” said Elena.

“I can teach you, my dear.”

“You can?” Cerris said in surprise. Aramella didn’t look like she could hurt a fly, yet there was something in her confidence. “You know how to fight with a sword?”

“As a child I learned to spar with the weapons available to me. My family were blacksmiths by trade, so I had a lot to work with. My father taught me to use a blade when I was fifteen. I haven’t picked one up in years, but I should still remember enough to teach you. May I see your sword, Elena?”

Elena nodded, drew her sword and handed it over to Aramella, blade first. The woman awkwardly took the weapon and began to inspect it. Seeing the craftsmanship, she gave an affectionate smile. “Ah, this is my brother’s handiwork, if I’m not mistaken.”

“So, you’ll teach me?” Elena checked.

“I will,” Aramella answered, still inspecting the sabre. “Before I do though, I would like to know one thing. Why the sudden urge to learn, Elena? Dragon’s Peak is quite safe and, before now, you’ve expressed no interest in combat. It’s quite strange, is it not?” She turned a cunning eye on them.

Both Cerris and Elena froze. They both hurried to think up an excuse that didn't involve leaving. Aramella looked between them, her sharp eyes judging and awaiting an answer. Finally, after a much longer than natural time, Cerris spoke.

“I always promised to teach her a weapon,” she said, as confident as she could muster. “Now that we're together again, I wish to keep that promise.” It wasn’t untrue.

“Really?” Aramella exclaimed. “Because I thought I overheard you say that you would need these skills to survive when you left. It was right before Elena fell over backwards. I have been watching you for a while,” she added smoothly.

“That… was all bluster,” Cerris tried to lie, but even she felt no confidence in it.

Aramella just raised her eyebrows in disbelief. She broke into gentle laughter.

“Elena, I was aware you weren't dedicated to Pyra's ideals, but I thought you'd be better at hiding it,” she chuckled. “It’s also interesting to see that Cerris feels the same way, even after only recently arriving.”

19 - Ideal tickle room

(SpookyDaddy speaking here) Oh goodness, I think my ideal space would be so much fun to build! (Stay tuned for that, because we're working on it already~) but I like the idea of the decor being a collective effort. Probably a lot of art that princess has made, she's an incredibly talented artist. Maybe some movie posters? The kind of carpet that isn't *too* fluffy but still feels confused and nice on bare feet. Cameras strategically placed at corners and important sight lines both for live streams and so we don't miss anything after the fact. 😏

Big queen or king size bed, and a big, sturdy wooden square frame going over it at each side and above. One day we're going to set up those cargo straps that click and tighten when you pull them so princess can be spread eagle but standing.

Other auto includes would be: a gyno chair, my special wooden ankle stocks, a large sturdy table affixed with segufix/medical restraints, a rack to hack up our straitjacket, and a big closet to store and display all our toys and tools 😏

Maybe a black and purple color scheme 🤔

Oh. Goodness~ I think @spookyqtie has gotten off easy on this lately. She doesn't really like to wear socks unless it's really cold out (I suspect she also just likes knowing that SpookyDaddy here is always going to notice or look 👀) but this is something I've actually been planning for quite some time, I think she needs to experience the delightful anticipation of slowly, teasingly, evilly removing clothes.

Already all tied up, and feeling the protective cloth just inch off your feet more and more? The cool air, the increasing feelings of vulnerability?? 😏 I'm all about it. Giving I mean. I'm definitely COMPLETELY immune to the effects of this myself, though. *nods*

We're planning a private beach trip in the next 2 weeks or so, and we've already are planning to make a bunch of buried in sand content, it's a favorite of SD's. I'll have to keep this on mind with princesses sandals, won't I? 😈

Certified hair stylist here: if you want volume like this in 2024 you need 3 things

1. Hair that isn't super shiny glossy, easily run a brush through it, no tangles. If you don't naturally have that (like my wife whose hair is the only straight thing about her and wow is it!) you need to add that quality. You can do that with any of those texture powders or dry shampoo. If you have naturally curly hair, you're probably good to skip this step but you can do it if you like.

2. Spray in gel. My brother used to have this as a teen (because it was the 2000s) and I used it once for a dance thing because I had to get all of my hair off my face in a dance-bun (my hair barely went into a bun at all back then because I didn't know what I was doing with it, let alone making it stay there. Now I know how to manipulate it I just need Kirby grips but that's a separate tutorial). Hairspray in 2024 is (not breaking the ozone layer anymore, thank you activists and also) made to allow for movement. It isn't intended to Hold Fast, it's meant to Hold Soft. Hold enough to keep in place without looking glued together. I have, however, heard good things about the got2be glued hairspray from cosplayers but I have no personal experience. Spray in gel would be my recommendation. Look for something that says "strong hold"

3. Technique:

You should have: a spray bottle of water, a hairdryer, your styling gel (or hairspray, and powder if you need it), a curling iron or crimper (ideally), a comb (ideally with a tail, doesn't matter what kind of tail), a round brush, and if you're feeling fancy a ratting/back combing brush too. (You can do it with the absolute bare minimum of a cup of water—but really please use a spray bottle, a thin toothed comb, a hair dryer, and the gel but that requires a greater grasp of the technique and is not recommended for beginners).

Start with making texture at your root. The texture powder, crimping or curling your hair, make sure you're getting as close to the root as you can. This is also a good time but not the only possible time to curl/crimp the rest of your hair too. If it gets too messy or you wanna do it at the end, that's also an option.

Then taking small horizontal sections (aka swipe sections as if from ear to ear), if you want it to look smooth at the front, leave the very front section out of this, backcomb the absolute crap out of it. (Back combing is quite literally combing backwards, from top toward root. For this you wanna start a few centimetres from the root and move as far up (down?) the hair as you want height in increments. After each piece of back combing, spray in your gel. Comb-comb-comb spray gel, comb-comb-comb spray gel, comb-comb-comb spray gel, etc. Once your section is done, slowly let it go and see if it stands, if it won't, don't worry too much were not done. Keep going until as much of your head is backcombed as you want.

Now that your whole head is backcombed, you wanna flip your head upside down, spritz it with the water then the gel and blast it with the hairdryer until that gel feels crispy. Then spray more gel. <— this is also the time to smooth your front section in if you wanted it smooth. You need soft-brush strokes for that.*

*If your hair still won't stay, or isn't sturdy enough after the backcombing, go in with a sprayed-damp small round brush and scoop medium sections of hair to actively, intentionally dry with more volume. Once it's dry, but before you take the warmed brush out, spray it with gel. This technique is weirdly advanced, because you're working with backcombed hair, so be careful.

Your hair should now be held. If it's not, repeat the back-combing step. You can tidy your curls/crimps if you want them/want them tidied now.

Notes:

It will not feel nice. According to my mum, it never felt nice with the old hairspray either.

It will fall over the course of the day, that's just what happens

You will need to spend a lot of time washing that gel out and detangling your hair. Go slow, get a good paddle brush or detangling specific brush (unless, like my wife, you have hair straighter than a metal sheet)

If this STILL doesn't work, you might want to try pre-curling with a setting lotion (rollers style) before using texture powder.

Or you can fake it with a bumpit/bun doughnut/ victory roll fill/etc. in those cases, you just need hair that will stick to itself with gel/hairspray. Separate the hair into the front/display section and the pinnable section. Backcomb both, pin your pinnable under-section over the add-in and hairspray stick the top part of your hair over it. Crimping/curling advised for extra disguiseability. OR, like the woman in the bottom right, put it in a pineapple-ponytail with a tall tie to mimic volume.
