hoping that u'll share with us what's in ur mind when ure thinking about the vegaspete time loop AU

SFJKSGDKSGDKGSJSG im not sure how interesting this is gonna be because everything about it really is embarrassingly self-indulgent but here we go!!!

so one of the main objective of the time loop is to avoid the conflict between the main and minor family while still exposing korn's manipulation, which is easier said than done. vegas' first instinct is to go to pete because he trusts him more than anyone in the world (no, im not throwing shade at the novel, what are you talking about), but if pete believes him and becomes suspicious enough to go snoop around, pete gets caught and killed. needless to say, that's a BIG NO NO;

vegas tries other things but they all equally end in disaster: if he pushes ken to investigate, they both get discovered early on and vegas achieves nothing but to get sent to the safe house alone with no chance to change things or get close to pete; if he goes to porsche and tells him about his mother too early, then porsche's mistrust for the main family gets so strong that it prevents him from falling in love with kinn, which causes porsche to kill korn and the minor family to win, but pete firmly remains loyal to kinn and dies trying to protect him; in a couple of timelines vegas gets so desperate he actually tries to get kinn or tankhun to help him, but kinn never believes him, and while tankhun surprisingly does, if vegas tries hard enough, they are a TERRIBLE team, disagreeing pretty much on everything and getting discovered IMMEDIATELY;

vegas eventually finds his best option: who is removed enough from the main storyline not to cause any dramatic changes while also being connected to it and having free access to the main family's house and already being suspicious of korn? so yeah, vegas goes to kim (and they actually make a GREAT team. like @clandestinegardenias [who's lovely and patient enough to indulge me in my delusions] said: "kim would share his murderboard and they'd plot together and be unbearably pretty about it");

as a side note, vegas and kim teaming up means that kim doesn't get involved with chay to find out more about porsche, but don't worry, they still end up meeting, because vegas learns he has to send tawan to kinn to make things work, which means that tawan still kidnaps chay, but this time vegas is the one to ask kim for help to deal with the situation, so what comes out of it is that 1) chay wakes up to find out that his idol, who's also apparently a mafia heir, just saved his life, and when chay starts to live in the main family's house and eventually gets closer to kim, there are no lies between them, 2) BIG GETS TO LIVE, 3) no one finds out about vegas being involved with tawan;

NOW FOR SOME VEGASPETE. in one timeline, while trying to figure out how to go about this whole mess, vegas shows up at yok's bar during the events of episode 3, so while kinn and porsche are busy smooching on the piers, vegas finds himself dealing with a very drunk pete. nothing happens, of course, but pete and porsche waking up in the same bed? NOPE. DOESN'T HAPPEN. more like vegas brings pete back to his room at the main family's house, but pete is a SUPER AFFECTIONATE DRUNK (which vegas finds unbearably cute) and refuses to let vegas go. the next morning pete wakes up, realizes he is snuggling with VEGAS THEERAPANYAKUL OF ALL PEOPLE and promptly yeets himself off the bed and on the ground. pete is pretty sure vegas is gonna murder him so he keeps apologizing, but vegas is just.. laughing and teasing him a little and lying on pete's bed with his hair rumpled from sleep and his shirt half open and looking at pete in a way that makes pete's heart ACHE and he has no idea what it MEANS;

but vegas learns that he needs to be careful in approaching pete, because in some timelines the way he tries to get closer to pete too early and too quickly causes kinn to become suspicious of pete being the mole and to send someone else to spy on vegas;

(and this is where i show myself as the over dramatic hoe i actually am because i like to imagine that, to test his theory and find out if there's actually something going on between vegas and pete, kinn pretends to be hitting on pete and tries to kiss him in front of vegas, which.. i let you imagine how that goes. vegas thought he knew how being jealous of kinn felt like, but NOTHING ever came close to the feeling building in his chest as he sees kinn's hands on pete. before he can even realize it, he is tuckling kinn to the ground and pummeling him, completely out of his mind);

also the time loops aren't completely free of consequences for pete: every time vegas fails and a timeline gets reset, there's some 'unconscious emotional transfer' (the credit goes once again to @clandestinegardenias for this one) that remains with pete, so he starts to see flashes of other timelines in his dreams and have all these feelings for vegas that he has no idea where are they coming from and it's driving him crazy because is it real?? does pete want it to be real?? is it really HIM wanting vegas or is it some other pete?? does it even matter?? pete is actually the one who ends up snapping and kissing vegas because he feels like he's losing his mind and just needs to KNOW

so. um. yeah, this is basically what i've been thinking about as the heat slowly melts my brain

The Fire Nation Awaits 🌺 An in-depth look at the ever-elusive islands in the era of Korra and when we will finally pay them a visit

“Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.” We’ve all heard those words a million times. The four elements, and the power to control them bestowed by four subspecies of giant lion-turtles, are at the very heart of the world of Avatar. The balance between them was once upon a time broken by one of the four, the Fire Nation, forming the main conflict of Avatar: The Last Airbender. For much of Aang and the Gaang’s quest at the close of the Hundred Year War, the Fire Nation was a forbidden, far-away location, until the curtain was finally drawn back in the aptly-named Book Three: Fire when our heroes entered the inferno, undercover behind enemy lines. A dramatic tropical destination! New outfits! Culture shock! Needless to say, it was a big deal.

When the Hundred Year War ended, the newly-instated Fire Lord Zuko dedicated his life to righting the wrongs of his forefathers and working with Avatar Aang to bring the Fire Nation back into the fold under peace. By the time Aang’s successor debuted as the next Avatar in the titular The Legend of Korra, Zuko had abdicated the five-pointed crown and his daughter, Fire Lord Izumi, took the stage leading a reformed, rebalanced Fire Nation.

There was no more war, no more enemy lines, yet the Fire Nation became more distant and mysterious than ever before.

Korra’s close encounters with the land of fire

To this day, Korra has never visited the Fire Nation, nor has it been seen at all, nor do we know anything about it in her era. In fact, practically the only thing we do know is that its leader is a noninterventionist, which conveniently gets it out of the way of making an appearance in Korra’s journey as the Avatar so far.

The closest we have come to seeing the Fire Nation in The Legend of Korra was in Book Two: Spirits, Chapter Five: Peacekeepers. In the midst of the Water Tribe Civil War, Korra sets out across the sea to get help from the royal family, however, she is intercepted by a dark spirit and never makes it to her destination. In the next episode, she washes up on a secret island home to the Bhanti sages, which probably technically counts as Fire Nation territory, but as we know from The Shadow of Kyoshi (more on that later), this faction predates the Four Nations themselves so it doesn’t really count.

No, as cool as that location and the events of the Beginnings two-parter that happened there were, it wasn’t the main draw of seeing the Fire Nation that we’re still waiting for: seeing how the Fire Nation, which was already industrializing in Aang’s time, changed over the decades, compared to places like Republic City and Ba Sing Se; meeting new characters; visiting new and familiar locations; worldbuilding both new and expanding on what we already learned.

After this aborted tease in Book Two, we never come close to the island country again (at least not with this Avatar and in her era; yes I’m leading up to something...). Instead, the focus turns strongly to the Earth Kingdom in the third and fourth Books, and beyond.

Keep in mind that The Legend of Korra aired for about two-and-a-half years total from 2012 to 2014. Since then, the story has continued in comics. The comics era has lasted from 2015 to present-- seven years to the animated series’ two. In that time, there have only been two comic trilogies due to various production troubles, and neither have touched the Fire Nation. Instead, they directly continue the Earth Kingdom-focused threads started in Books Three and Four of Korra, both originally airing in 2014. Or, in perspective: we had a focus on Republic City in 2012, the Water Tribes in 2013, and the Earth Kingdom from 2014-2021.

Will we finally see the Fire Nation in the next graphic novel trilogy?

This question comes to mind every time new Korra content is supposed to roll around, and the powers that be know it-- it’s a pretty obvious gap in the world of Avatar right now. This franchise is iconically built around four elements and the Four Nations based on them, so one of them being MIA is quite glaring, and for that reason everyone is understandably always asking about it.

The most concrete confirmation we’ve gotten was this AMA answer from franchise co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino in 2016, two years after the show ended and a year before the first graphic novels did come out:

“Yes, hopefully in the [Korra] comics, we’ll have a chance to go to the Fire Nation and see how it has changed since A:TLA.”

Since then, as previously discussed, two comic trilogies have come and gone, obviously not getting closer to the Fire Nation-- and I would actually argue entrenching themselves further away from it.

I want to make it clear that I’m against fan entitlement. Creatives telling the tales they want to in service of the story and the artform is how the industry should run. I’m just hoping to offer some perspective on how we got to where we are almost a decade into the era of Korra and the metatextual pacing of the franchise itself.

Either way, the next Korra comic trilogy has been official confirmed by the editor for Avatar at Dark Horse Comics in this informal statement on Twitter:

We’re not ready to announce any details yet, but we are working on the next trilogy. I really appreciate your patience and hope it’s worth the wait! ✨

There’s currently some kind of holdup for which we really have zero context or information, and we of course have no idea what this next trilogy will be about. (I do speculate a bit on what it could be a few paragraphs down.)

But, like what turned out to be Ruins of the Empire before it, I faithfully made a mockup graphic for my post announcing the confirmation of the next The Legend of Korra graphic novel trilogy. And like before, I chose to completely speculatively and blindly make it Fire Nation-y, as if the next comic could/would(/should?) feature it. This is mainly because I feel like that’s what most people’s eyes would be caught by and thus result in the most successful post (hey, at least I’m honest), but also because it’s just fun.

→ 🌺 Speculative edits I made for my posts on the announcement of previous and upcoming Korra comics before we knew anything about them.

In both cases, the response was huge, and people were super excited about the prospect of Fire Nation content just from my quick speculative mockups. I am of course hoping that the new artwork I made of the Krew for this post will have a similar effect (it’s the first time I just straight-up drew it instead of editing existing images) but again it’s really mostly just for fun.

Anyway, until the next trilogy is properly revealed, we’ll just have to wait and see.

However, that’s not the only place this could happen.

Are they saving the Fire Nation for an animated movie?

With Avatar’s HUGE success on Netflix last year, interest in the franchise rocketed to an all-time high. The streaming wars have begun, and Avatar’s owner and its parent company, Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS, have finally started to notice.

ViacomCBS is launching Paramount+ on March 4th, a relaunch of its existing streaming service CBS All Access. Paramount+ is meant to be a big expansion and refocus to compete with the big hitters: Disney+, HBO Max, and, yes, Netflix. (There’s quite an entanglement there, with Netflix being the home of Avatar’s big year and the upcoming live-action series.)

One of the keys to a successful streamer today is high-profile originals to drive new subscribers. ViacomCBS knows this and they know Avatar has just become among the highest profiles a property can have, breaking records and going toe-to-toe with other big-hitting sci-fi/fantasy/genre franchises. This knowledge goes right to the top of the food chain: the CEO of ViacomCBS mentioned Avatar by name when discussing potential originals for Paramount+.

I have previously discussed how The Search relates to this. The Search was the second ATLA comic trilogy, focused on the search for Zuko’s mother in the thick of the Fire Nation, and if you didn’t know, it was originally pitched by Bryke as an animated movie after the original series ended.

I just want to be clear that what I’m discussing here is purely speculative, but this is the only other piece of the Avatar franchise that we know was optioned for animation besides the shows themselves. It’s possible they would be interested in going back to this idea as a Paramount+ original (and it would certainly be popular among audiences), but it is of course set during the era of Aang and thus covers both a time period we’ve already seen, and also by nature of already being released as comics, events we’ve already seen too.

However, the whole point of this article is that there is one major, huge thing we haven’t seen yet, with massive anticipation building for a decade behind it: the Fire Nation in the era of Korra. So, again, this is just speculation, but it’s also possible that they could return to the very smallest seed of the original idea for a The Search movie, and do a Fire Nation-focused Korra movie now.

You can skip this next part if you don’t want to see me embarrassingly promote my fan idea 😆 but this is where the artwork I made for this article comes into play. The general idea for it, and the reason I tried to replicate the show’s style as much as possible, is that it’s what a Fire Nation-focused movie could maybe look like. Something as standalone and unrelated to Earth Kingdom drama as possible, with fresh new looks for the Krew to get people excited for something fresh and new! I really feel like the Avatar franchise has so much potential for expanded content like this, that’s why I have high hopes that Paramount+ will make the most out of it! You can see the individual characters’ artwork in larger size here. Ok I’m done back to business.

If the idea of a movie seems too impossible to you, we can also take a deeper look at Bryke’s involvement with upcoming comics instead.

After Korra ended, they officially each went their separate ways. They vaguely consulted on Avatar stuff, and Mike of course wrote the Korra comics, but Bryan was planning on writing and drawing his own original non-Avatar comic series and Mike was releasing his own non-Avatar novels. This all appears to have come to a stop when they signed on to showrun the live-action retelling of ATLA at Netflix, officially reuniting the partnership and committing to Avatar again in a big way. Of course, they ended up leaving that project over creative differences, but it did result in a big, lasting change: this time they remained official creative partners and have indicated they’re still working on Avatar now, together. This is a far cry from the official breakup after Korra, so it begs the question what exactly they’re working on. I of course have my fanciful predictions of a sprawling expansion of the Avatar franchise at Paramount+, but what if it’s actually a combination of the ingredients from before the live-action series...

More speculation, but what if the reason for all the mystery behind the next Korra comics is because they will be made by Bryke, with the two of them co-writing and Bryan doing the art for the first time? If that’s the case, they could want to make them a bigger deal than the other Avatar comics have been so far, and maybe that’s why it’s taking so long to iron everything out, have a more significant story, have more of a marketing push, etc. If they’ve been saving the Fire Nation for something big, this could be it.

I personally think this is less likely than a show or movies or something, but it is possible. Anything is possible right now since we know so little about the large-scale direction of the franchise moving forward, just that it’s gonna get big.

⛰️🌋 The Fire Nation in the era of Avatar Kyoshi

We’re not done! Despite everything I’ve written here, believe it or not, the Fire Nation was actually the star of the show in the last year.

With the debut of the Avatar franchise’s first original novels, Kyoshi made a huge splash (in a way only she can). If you haven’t read them yet, you NEED to-- they’re some of the best Avatar content EVER. The Rise of Kyoshi hit shelves in 2019 and The Shadow of Kyoshi followed in 2020. The latter is of particular interest here, because it was almost entirely set in the Fire Nation and featured practically everything and anything you could want from a visit to elusive islands. Though obviously set in a historical period some four hundred years before Aang’s time, Kyoshi’s sojourn in the Fire Nation gave us a huge amount of new information, a depth and breadth of worldbuilding, culture, and character we’ve never really seen in Avatar before. It truly makes the most of the literary medium, so hats off to author F. C. Yee for the passion and effort he put in.

In The Shadow of Kyoshi, we learn about the era of the previous fire Avatar before Roku, Avatar Szeto. Through Kyoshi and her own Team Avatar, we learn about the different clans and islands of the Fire Nation, as they experience the fraught early reign of Fire Lord Zoryu and the conflict between the Keohso and Saowon clans, culminating in the Camellia-Peony War. We get a multitude of fleshed-out perspectives from the upper crust to the flea-bitten underworld, matching the heights of the worldbuilding quality of Republic City. It’s such cool, intricate stuff, and really shows Avatar’s potential (and that’s all just the worldbuilding-- the character work is also top-notch).

That’s not the only place the Fire Nation has shone recently. One of Insight Editions’ awesome scrapbooks, Legacy of the Fire Nation, gave us a tour through the royal family’s history, including never-before-seen looks at young Iroh and Ozai and much, much more.

All this just goes to show that the Fire Nation has been a hot ticket throughout the ages and there’s one conspicuous gap in that history: the era of Avatar Korra. With so much recent expansion and development of the Fire Nation in our world, it would be perfect to see the culmination of it all in the current time period in the world of Avatar too.

If this made you excited for the potential of what the Avatar franchise could look like in the coming years, same boat!

The next concrete date where something could be announced is February 24th, when ViacomCBS will host their investor day and present their streaming strategy, including Paramount+ originals. There’s no guarantee Avatar is mentioned, but I’m keeping a hopeful eye out.

As for comics, Dark Horse’s schedule marches to its own beat, so there’s no way to know when the next drop of information is coming our way.

Could this finally be the comics that take us to the Fire Nation, or could the much-anticipated visit be in another medium like animation? Stay tuned-- as always I’ll post as soon as we learn anything new!

Sorry if! something like this has already been done. I still have yet to go through ur whole masterlist hhhh (same goes for like, pretty much all of my friends davshdjsk im so bad at this)

But! this type of scenario has been like. on my mind for a while now.

Some sort of... sleepover style date night with Saeyoung lol. Doesn't even have to be a special occasion, ya know? Totally something he would just... do. randomly. I love him.

Pillow/blanket forts, painting each other's nails, doing each other's makeup (well, for me personally, I know nothing about makeup, so that would be a one-way thing, but still lol), wearing his clothes (regular, or some of his outfits, etc), cuddles, pillow fights, snacks (feeding each other, stealing from each other's bags), staying up late, watching videos/movies, playing video games... There's a lot of options with this scenario, which is one reason I love it so much. And, even as someone who isn't really into stuff like painting my nails or wearing makeup, I would totally be fine with it in this scenario. Cos, well, it's with Saeyoung!

So, if you do end up doing this, feel free to take it whatever direction feels right to you! I just love this scenario in general uwu

One set of sleepover headcanons comming right up ~ I hope you enjoy!

Believe it or not, Saeyoung LOVES sleepovers

Well, in theory anyway

the most he knows about them comes from movies or shows

the accuracy of which is questionable at best

he did stay over at Yoosung’s a couple times, but they’d usually stay up playing LOLOL all night

needless to say, he’s flowing over with excitement when you ask him to have one

whether you go snack shopping together or let him go alone really doesn’t matter for the outcome

he’ll buy all the snacks and you can’t stop him

Saeyoung does not have any specific plans for the night, except he wants to try everything

he even made a list

he’ll mostly agree to do what you feel like doing though

it might get a bit frustrating at first, because he wants to prioritize YOU having fun, but knowing how little experience he has with this, you want to prioritize HIM having fun

probably won’t question it if you’re weirdly excited for the same things as he is though

use that to your advantage

on top of his list is definitely a cuddle session styling competition

free access to his wardrobe/costumes, baby!!

a lot more excited to see you in his clothes than you’ll ever know

because there’s so much he wants to do, there will be lots of combines activities

such as a karaoke fashion show

don’t worry about not hitting the notes or stumbling

he probably fucks up on purpose just to make you laugh

you’re not into watching a horror movie while Saeyoung gently puts makeup on you? Too bad! Try not to flinch, the eyeliner is waterproof.

he’s just so happy to do a normal people thing - even more so because he gets to experience it with his favourite person - you.

depending on whether or not he’d be able to get up without waking you, he’ll either prepare breakfast for you or together with you

can’t wait to do this again

Chapter 138: Dreams vs Reality

So I’ve sat down with my thoughts on ch138 for about a week analyzing Mikasa’s “vision” for character meta and its function to the plot. Needless to say there are polarizing opinions for obvious reasons- but I still feel the need to share my view bc I think it reveals a lot.

Disclaimer: I realize the issue with ship wars. I don’t intend to claim one thing or another; it’s entirely fair to interpret Eren’s feelings in many ways because that’s how this series works. I have no interest in arguing about it. I’m only interested in the dream vs reality aspects of the chapter.

For the record, I’m working with two theories here and I emphasize THEORIES. It’s cool to disagree with parts or all of it! I do hope my words get you thinking at least a bit though!

The Butterfly Effect

In order to tackle these two theories, the theory of the “butterfly effect,” paths dividing into multiple timelines originating from one singular timeline depending on Eren’s choices, needs to be considered. On first introduction to the Attack Titan’s abilities, Eren says that the holder can see future memories of its respectable owners. Thanks to the Paths, Eren is able to communicate with previous holders, like Grisha, to commit acts that would lead him to obtaining the Attack and Founding Titans. The Butterfly Effect would kick off the events that we’ve been following along in the story and imply that time exists in a circle, since the reason Eren gets the titans is because he was able to convince Grisha to do so by showing him selective memories.

The issue with this is in ch138, if Mikasa’s reality was actually a divergent timeline, if it really were the case Eren and Mikasa would run off together if she had confessed her feelings, there would be no way for Eren to convince his father to give him the Attack and Founding. Therefore, they wouldn’t have even been in the outside world to run away to, Eren wouldn’t die of the titan curse, which is what happens in Mikasa’s ideal world.

It seems that he needs Paths specifically to communicate with Grisha. It’s even possible he needs direct contact with royal blood to even see the memories, or else it was needed to trigger that ability for him to now do so more freely later.

Therefore, in this case, we can assume the butterfly effect is either debunked or functions differently than a domino reaction.

Paths exist in parallels – Mikasa’s Ideal is an alternative reality

We have confirmation from the storyboard of the chapter that this was meant to be Mikasa’s “ideal (world).” Had she confessed her feelings to Eren, she would have suggested running away the night before Eren leaves his friends so that they can live Eren’s last 4 years in peace. Obviously with the watering down of the Butterfly Effect, we see that it is impossible for this to happen, at least in the main timeline.

Mikasa experiences a migraine when faced with the reality that Eren has to die in order to kill the “Founding Titan.” She’s been experiencing these unexplainable headaches throughout the series during certain critical points of the plot that she personally experiences. We can assume Eren has been lying about the Ackerman abilities in order to push Mikasa away from him, so that she would have less hesitation when she ultimately has to face him. We don’t see Levi having these migraines when his own “host” Erwin cannot be protected from death. Even Kenny doesn’t seem to experience or note these headaches when Uri is dying. The only thing that is mentioned is the awakening power and inability to have their memories wiped or manipulated.

That said, it doesn’t seem to apply to Ackermans actually experiencing what the Founder can show them. In this case, the theory of an alternate reality would be plausible if one with the Founder can access those other realities. If Mikasa did experience another reality, it is because Eren who “controls” (or rather is lent power by) Ymir is able to bring her there. This would mean that timelines exist in parallel to each other and there are multiple alternative universes and realities, ones with Titans and ones without. The headaches may be a result of a resistance that is likely due to showing Mikasa these realities during specific moments, ones with situations that align with other realities but aren’t explicitly converging at any point and her Ackerman blood trying to block that process from happening- with Ymir and Eren together, they are able to breakthrough that barrier.

Now you can interpret that Eren’s reason for bringing her there is to assure her that there is a reality where she suggests running away together and that she experiences that life with the assurance that she will stay with Eren as long as he lives. She knows that this isn’t her own reality: “I think I shouldn’t be here.” Eren likely also brings her here to show that even with their peaceful life that the conflict still exists and that she still cannot save him. After he dies, he wants her to detach herself from him, forget the memories, and to be free.

Whatever the reason, we can assume that the “cottage” Mikasa and Eren aren’t the main timeline Mikasa and Eren. It wouldn’t make sense for the history and it wouldn’t align with their motivations throughout the story. While the timeline of events up to that point are similar if not exact, their behaviors aren’t quite the ones we have been following.

I’ll explain further but in short to believe the above in genuine runs a high risk of presenting as “character assassination.” In other words, “out of character.” (Sorta)

Keeping this in mind, this potentially means that these “path” visits have been foreshadowed and even acted upon by Eren before this moment. First off, we know that Eren foresaw the future of the Rumbling and “that sight” when touching Historia’s hand. We also know he sees other moments in between via these future memories. He is only limited in seeing the actual chain of events that gets to that point.

For years before he concedes to this future, he is adamant about finding literally any other solution that will not result in the Full Scale Rumbling. When Kiyomi brings up even threatening the world with the Rumbling on top of sacrificing Historia, he rejects that offer, suggesting that they should consider other options. When Hange says that Hizuru cannot aid in getting other allies to help them, Eren is distraught by the failure of another plan. However, he accepts going to Marley to survey the nation to seek opportunities for peaceful conversation. Before their departure, Eren discusses the potential destruction of Paradis with Historia, saying that their options are to fight or run away- Historia, however, accepts the duties given to her. Eren knows this option is unacceptable and with that nature he must go forth with Hange’s plan or commit the Rumbling (though of course he knows the latter is the future). It’s the rescue of the little boy Ramzi that gives Eren the realization that the events are exactly how he saw them when receiving the future memories. He actually considers leaving the boy behind to change that fate, but his nature, just like how he can’t accept the fate of Paradis to be destroyed, causes him to protect the boy. Eren realizes that the future cannot be changed- because of fate and because of his nature.

He asks Mikasa the big question and receives her final answer. This seems far fetched but when his friends arrive to interrupt the moment he says with disappointment that it was “perfect timing.” Of course, this could also indicate the frustration of having this conversation interrupted with Mikasa, or that he no longer wanted to hear an elaboration because he didn’t expect anything to change, but with the future sight theory he could have foreseen his friends showing up at that precise moment; there isn’t a lot of evidence to say one way or another, but it’s worth considering since even Mikasa is confused when he says this, meaning that there is supposed to be focus on why he says this. During the conference that proposes Eldian rights, after attendees and speakers insist that the real issue are the Paradisians and they should be ridden of, Eren leaves, now convinced that this is the path he has to take. All other options are lost despite his begging, and he is sure there is no other way.

Everything seems to go just like Eren plans, including the time to meet up with Zeke; the only obstacle that he hadn’t foreseen was Reiner bringing reinforcements early. Either these are events leading up to the same future that he did not see, or this is a different Path he exists on.

We see that he convinces Grisha to slaughter the Reiss family in order to get the Founding Titan when Zeke takes them on a “memory lane” trip. With showing Grisha selective memories, his father decides to hand the titans to Eren just as he did in the “alpha” timeline. He tells Zeke that he was able to “get to this point” thanks to Zeke, so now he is on the proper path. Now the events are aligned where he does “see that sight” by contacting Ymir directly and activating the Rumbling.

How did he get to that path though? Where does it start? Is there a beginning at all? Well, either Zeke had led them to a parallel path that was similar enough to show identical memories so to convince Eren that Grisha was brainwashing him—or Eren took advantage of a distracted Zeke to “path jump.” It’s interesting that Zeke is the one leading them up until the end of the chapter when Eren is the one now pushing Zeke to get to the next memory. The events up until Grisha gets to the Reiss Cave during the titan invasion occur according to the main timeline.

At this point, Eren is aware that the future of this timeline is viable, one that he is most “like himself” because his behavior is consistent with his beliefs. He was always fated to be this way, he always knew that he would never abandon Paradis so long as they were at risk. He would never allow his friends to suffer that fate. There was never a future for him to run away and live in the mountains living the rest of his life in isolation with Mikasa. His very nature would never allow him to.

It is also possible that this foresight didn’t always come with the goal of flattening the entire earth- he would have foreseen the Rumbling not complete, he only ever mentions starting it and “that sight,” points in the manga that we have already seen. He had the opportunity to prevent his friends from fighting by wiping their memories (save the Ackermans, but even they are just two people), but chose not to due to his ideologies, which he carried since he was a child. In fact, he goads his friends to kill him. He knows this is a future he is fated to have. He expects Mikasa to kill him. Expects that he must convince her to let go of her hesitation and end his life. “You should let go of me.” Why invade that path to tell her this if his goals are to destroy the world, unless he truly expects to stop her and the rest? How could he foresee “see you later Eren” though as an end to his life?

This might be the answer to destroying the true Founding Titan since it now exists in their physical world as he acts as a vessel. This might be the solution to eradicate the titans- “destroy this world.” Disconnect Paths. Stop the indefinite fate where he and his home perish by erasing the existence of Titans altogether. Break fate.

It was (mostly) just a dream

The second running theory is that Mikasa really does just experience the moment of “going back to their home” as a dream. We know she gets headaches at critical moments where she runs the risk of losing someone close to her—and this isn’t isolated to just Eren. This happens when Carla dies and Armin is on the brink of death. The dream ultimately is a coping mechanism, wishing for an ideal world where she can live with Eren in peace and isolation, instead of facing the inevitability that Eren must die.

Also the chapter’s title is “A Long Dream.”

Now I’m not claiming that Mikasa is suffering a delusion, because she is very much aware that this “reality” or “dream” isn’t real- just because she is lucid does not mean she thinks this a world that exists for her. She’s very aware that this ideal world of hers is impossible and was never possible to begin with. Her dream is a confrontation of the reality that even with an innocent Eren who just wants a peaceful life that it is not aligned with the nature she has watched develop. As much as she wants to cling onto an innocent and idealized image of her loved one, she knows this isn’t who he is. This isn’t who they are.

She knows that the world they live in is still with conflict- Eren reminds her of that. She apologizes for bringing it up because that realization that they left to live in peace and potentially leave their homeland exposed with no alternative solution, simply giving in to the circumstances, is not who either of them are, and to hold onto that image of Eren is merely fabrication. The entire dream functions as a metaphor. But in every world, Eren will die, be in by her hands or the titan curse.

[This is alluded to in Lost Girls, another “alternative reality” story.]

It is only disrupted when Eren tells Mikasa to throw the scarf and forget about him because she deserves to be free. He wears the titan markings of his Founding Titan. At this point it’s implied that Eren is communicating through Pathways that connect to her dreams. Remember, dreams (and nightmares) are a very prevalent subject brought up in the series alongside memories- it is possible that the Founder can infiltrate dreams to communicate much like it can bring Eldians to the Path realm. Mikasa cannot be controlled because she is an Ackerman, but this doesn’t omit the possibility that she can still see differences in her dreams (or reality) if interfered by the Founding Titan. Ymir allows this open line of communication with the knowledge Eren is convincing Mikasa to kill him. To simmer down the emotional turmoil, he says that she must forget about him. Of course, because Mikasa cannot be manipulated, she decides that while she must kill him, that his death is inevitable, she will not forget him. And he will not die without her expressing her feelings. That is her own willpower.

At this point, the dream is “shared” between the two because Eren is an active spectator. When Mikasa says her final goodbye, her “see you later,” it isn’t the same dream as what it started as. Which is why he is able to remember it in the first chapter.

Now, I say mostly a dream because it is possible that dreams themselves could create alternative realities if they haven’t existed before. But even if that wasn’t the case, Eren still alludes to path jumping, so the series of events could have still led him to a path that would be able to infiltrate Mikasa’s coping dream, knowing that she would struggle to end his life, but that she needs to see him again and be assured that he wants her to move on with her life, and not to see this as a failure on her part- that her answer really would not have mattered so she should not regret her choices. She is the one that has to kill him to get to this point. He expects to die, he doesn’t stop her when she gets in the titan, he seems resigned to that fate.

The dream theory is shorter but I’m inclined to believe that is what really happened with perhaps some mixture of the “alternate realities” theory for the sake of the plot solving the issue of titans, as well as reverting the rest of the cast from their Pure Titan fate. Getting rid of Paths (the Founding Titan and Eren) is a viable solution to both rid of the nightmare as well as give Ymir and Eren a new life without being enslaved by fate. But that’s a big elaborate and perhaps too complex theory. I’m only making sense of how the final chapter may wrap up.

Alternative Selves: Fabrication to Cope aka “Mikasa and Eren would not run away”

Regardless of either theory, we must come to the conclusion that the Mikasa and Eren in her dream, her ideal world, whatever it may really be, are not their main story selves. In fact it is impossible both because it would break the timeline and because it would not align with their true selves, the ones we’ve been following along throughout the story. It makes more sense for Mikasa to cope with this ideal of hers, but the moment she enters that vision, she knows that this is fake and that this Eren is an idealized version she created (or exists elsewhere and time). To believe otherwise is not understanding who these characters truly are at their core.

Regardless of Eren’s feelings towards her, be it romantic, platonic, familial, his very nature, as he states himself, would never allow him to “not make a decision.” He would never abandon the others he claims to love, the ones he wants them to live long lives, to wander in the dark without at least a warning of the impending doom ahead of them. He gave his friends the freedom to fight. He fights for the freedom of Eldia, protecting Paradis. He could never accept a fate that would allow the massacre of his people, even if he must commit omnicide to prevent it. Remember, this is the boy who saved a girl he never knew because her freedom was stolen. This is the boy that defends his weak friend because he values how the other boy’s mind opens to doors to freedom- the boy that gave him the knowledge of the outside world that fueled his ambition to break down the case in the first place. He doesn’t want to live a mundane life. Especially not if his oppressed people are in danger. This is the guy who has a superior officer who calls him a monster that will not submit to any cage anyone puts him in- he has the fire in his eyes to keep moving forward, to persevere against all odds.

This is the man that would lay down his own life if it meant Paradis would be saved. He would simply never choose the option to run away from that, not even dream about it.

He knew he wanted to see that sight. He was shown that image. That is his ideal world. His vision, his dream. Which means he must fight and move forward. Find a way to save his loved ones so they live long happy lives.

And, honestly, it’s inaccurate to call Mikasa selfish for her ideal life because while she would want to live alone with Eren by her side, when being reminded of the carnage that will take place and that they are not there to help, she submits that it is something neither of them could accept. She might want to run away to have a peaceful life, but not with the knowledge there are consequences for doing so. That there are people she would leave behind. She wouldn’t leave them to that fate. Her actions to stop Eren is evidence of that.

As much as she loves Eren, she has devotion to her homeland and her friends, too. To run away would be uncharacteristic. This is the girl who decided to fight when the boy who saved her was in danger. This is the girl that chose to keep fighting even when her closest family, the one she loved, was “killed.” She is the girl who threw the knife away and promised that she would never leave her friend behind. She stays to fight for her home, Paradis, because it is her birthplace, she belongs here- she wouldn’t run if her home is in danger.

Which is why, to assume they are the real Mikasa and Eren in Mikasa’s “ideal world”, is utterly and completely misread. That is not nor ever what their characters would lead to. The idea of running away would be barely a flicker of a thought at most, but even then, it is uncharacteristic to act. Unreal. Just like their artificial selves in that “dream.”

It isn’t like Isayama didn’t allude to Mikasa and Eren separating. He does so for Armin when they have clashing views on the world and their own selves- Armin being more “worldly” and explorative and Eren being more “self-focused” and personally ambitious. Mikasa would sympathize more with Armin’s point of view, but her desire is to be by Eren’s side.

Isayama gives his opinion on Mikasa’s determination to be stuck to Eren the entire time. It is a “pitiful” existence. She is willing to even shoulder his burdens just so he could come home, that perhaps his emotional distress is the reason he is causing mass destruction. She is desperate for this. That is… not exactly productive of her character, or the plot.

However, he clarifies that this is his view on Mikasa’s course of direction. Her ideal is to be with Eren forever. It may not necessarily be entirely positive that she leaves him behind since deviation from that ideal isn’t guaranteed growth. Isayama has a habit of allowing his readers to experience his work with their own interpretations. Just because he believes Mikasa’s existence with Eren at a constant is unfavorable, everyone will see it that way. Perhaps it is a good thing that she has a goal to work towards and that it is the fuel to her fighting spirit. That her desiring a peaceful life with Eren is a good motivator. Or alternatively, her fixation on Eren would lead her into more dangerous situations that would risk her life, it has her see an unreal version of him, unable to accept his fated death that she is willing to sacrifice everything, even if it means shouldering the burdens he carries, if it means he lives.

The message is clear, however, that whether you, the reader, sees that as wholly positive or negative, or a mixture of both, the intention is that she must let him go. She must accept his death. Because if she is to keep her home, a semblance of peace and closure, save her friends- this is how it must end. There is a beautiful nuance, however, that Mikasa is given the opportunity to forget so that she can avoid the suffering and be free, but she chooses not to- just as she decides when Eren is first taken from her. When she initially thought he died, she decided to keep fighting to honor his spirit and memory. She never wants to forget him. Even if he will die in every reality they share together, the worst thing in the world is an existence without even the memory of him.

This is why she is able to get that closure. She expresses her feelings and says her final goodbye, in this world anyway. “See you later” because she will still have the ideal dream knowing that while it isn’t real, it can never be real, not for her, but his memory will live on with her. And she can carry that memory without sacrificing her agency, her home, her friends, her love. That is what she is meant to do.

Anyway, I wrote this mostly to observe the function of Paths and what Mikasa’s dream infers is possible, and an opening to a solution, as well as her decision to end Eren’s life. The dream speaks loudly of Mikasa and Eren as characters because it shows us what they are not. It emphasizes the characters that we have been following since the beginning are raw and motivated, destined to live their lives fighting and protecting and moving onward, never surrendering. And to insist otherwise would be a disservice to how they’ve been built up to after all this time.

MANAGER OF K-POP GROUP RESCUES IDOL, SEVERELY INJURRED ON MV SET

K-pop group BTS is currently celebrating their first ever music show win tonight with their captivating performance of ‘I Need U.’ But while the idols are basking in the joy of their first win, one of their managers who has been with them since the beginning is not in quite so good of shape.

An anonymous source has provided us with an exclusive behind the scenes look at some of the chaos which occurred during the shooting for the music video for the track ‘I Need U.’ We have photo proof of the incident, captured from a video which our anonymous source provided for us.

In the music video, each member has their own stories to portray. One such story is portrayed by the member V, whose character appears to live in an abusive household. The video shows him having a scuffle with who we assume to be the character’s father. This is where things didn’t go exactly according to plan during filming, according to the source.

“The scene was originally supposed to have some back and forth between V and the actor,” our source explained. “In the music video, you can see that next to where the fight happens there is a piece of furniture, like a shelving unit. During the first filming attempts when the actor pushed V away from him, he had accidentally pushed him into the furniture a few times.

“I honestly have no idea how she even saw it. It happened so quickly that no one else could react, but she reacted so fast. The last time V had bumped into the furniture, it had rocked it enough that it started to tip over. Before anyone even knew what was happening, the manager had pulled V out of the way, but the furniture ended up falling on her instead.”

“It was so shocking and happened so suddenly. After I was able to process what had happened, I couldn’t help but feel amazed that she was able to act so quickly.”

The manager in question is L/n Y/n, who has been working with the group since 2012. She was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for two broken legs. She left the facility a few days later in a wheelchair and we assume she will be unable to work until she can walk on her own again.

To long-time fans of BTS, her name may sound familiar. Not too long after the group debuted in 2013, pictures of her with the idols had been leaked online.

Fans’ immediate reactions to the pictures were very critical, wondering who this mystery woman was and why she seemed so close to the group. It didn’t take long for their company, BigHit Entertainment, to post an official statement saying another employee of the company had gotten into her phone and released the pictures. That employee was promptly fired, and after a post on the group’s twitter introducing her, fans relented on their criticisms.

“It is really obvious, seeing her interactions with the group that they are rather close,” our anonymous source confirmed. “They seem to be as close as family.”

Not much is known about where she is right now, but we expect she’s probably resting at home, recovering from the injury. Depending on how bad the injury was, she could take anywhere from two to six months to recover…

Bang PD was sitting in your living room, making you feel incredibly anxious. He didn’t want you to come down to the company since there was not really any discreet way for you to enter the building. After the article from yesterday, there were reporters waiting outside, hoping to run into someone they could squeeze information out of.

You really appreciated his thoughtfulness, but at the same time him being in your house was somewhat intimidating.

“I swear, I didn’t have anything to do with that article, PD-nim,” you said.

“Don’t worry, Y/n,” he responded. “I know it wasn’t you. You couldn’t have had access to the video footage they were supplied with. You’re not in trouble. I’m merely here to discuss with you how we are going to proceed from here.”

You nodded, waiting for him to continue.

“So far, there’s a very positive reaction to the article,” Bang said. “Fans are praising you for being so quick and attentive, and for keeping Taehyung from getting hurt. I really don’t see this article causing us any trouble so I don’t think we’ll need to do damage control.”

You felt a lot of the nervous tension you had building up leave you at that. You had seen a lot of comments left on the article yourself and it did appear to be positive, but you were scared to check Twitter or anywhere else so you weren’t sure if the response was similar elsewhere.

“As for what we are going to do, we have a few options,” PD-nim continued. “Now, you are not one of our celebrities. You didn’t sign up to be in the spotlight at all. So I can’t force you to do this, but I think it would be good if you would be willing to provide some kind of statement for the fans. We could do it internally, just have some basic questions written up which you can respond to and then we could then publish in an official statement from us, or send it to different news outlets to write articles about. What do you think, Y/n?”

You took a moment to think about it, but felt really unsure of yourself. “What would you want me to say?” you asked.

“Basically just whatever you want about the incident, as long as PR and I approve it. We’d come up with a list of questions to guide it, and see if there’s anything the fans are curious about that you could answer as well.”

That didn’t sound too bad, to be honest. Especially if it would just be done internally, rather than having to speak to some random reporter or interviewer. “I think I could do that,” you decided. “So you’re doing this to help promote the album even more I’m assuming? Since it’s something getting good PR.”

Bang spluttered for a moment before clearing his throat. “Well, when you put it bluntly like that…”

You laughed. “Sorry, I didn’t mean it as something bad. I just clarified more so that I just understood why you were hoping for me to do this. And if you need me to talk about the album or anything like that.”

“Oh, that you don’t need to do. It’ll be a little too straightforward that way. Just mentioning the music video, which will be easy to do when you’re talking about the fact that it happened on the set, and saying the name of the track is good enough. Only what you’d need to in order to tell the story. Any more than that and it’ll be a bit too much.”

You nodded in understanding. “Okay. Can I just write my answers to the questions though? I think that will be easier for me than talking to someone.”

“No problem. I’ll have PR come up with questions to cover all of our bases, and then if there would be anything else you want to add outside of those answers, feel free. I’ll try to get those sent to you either today or tomorrow, and if you could answer and send them back as quickly as you can, but without rushing it?”

“Sounds like a plan,” you smiled.

It was a lot easier than you expected to talk about the accident, and once your statement was finalized and sent out to the various news outlets, the articles were written surprisingly fast.

It had even gone viral to an extent. Even though BTS was still working their way up, stories like this in the K-pop world weren’t very common. The one thing that you weren’t prepared for was how supportive Army suddenly was of you.

You weren’t unknown to them—of course you were frequently seen with the boys, plus the pictures of you that had been leaked two years ago still circulated every now and then. And there were those who would say nice things about you here and there. But this was a whole new level you had never seen before, at least not for yourself.

They were sending so much support to BTS' Twitter, saying how thankful they were that the boys had you with them and praising you for protecting Taehyung. You felt that some things that they said were a little over the top, though. Some of them were idolizing you, making it sound like you were some kind of hero and that other managers needed to strive to be you. Those things were maybe just a little too much.

No, they were definitely way too much. And it was a surprise to you that the positive reactions weren’t really helping you feel better at all. In fact, they only did when you were actively reading comments. Otherwise, the realization of being further in the spotlight than ever weighed on you so much more than you could have ever expected.

And of course, the promotions for BTS’ album continued to go well, their fanbase seeming to increase faster than ever before. Needless to say, with the increase of promotional activities the boys were busier than ever.

It felt silly that being separate from them so often lately bothered you as much as it did. It was selfish, really, wanting to always be around them. You knew that was unrealistic, not even because of your current situation, but because they had their own lives. You couldn’t expect them to always spend time with you, and probably sooner rather than later they would find friends who they’d rather spend their free time with.

Which wouldn’t be a bad thing, not at all. It was natural. Being stuck here while they were off working and too busy to see you most days now made you realize that you’d gotten unhealthily attached to BTS. You should really have been thinking of a way to fix that, but all it did right now was make you feel worse.

They were currently in Malaysia, and even for a few days before that only one of them was barely able to trudge into your apartment at night to help you into bed. You wished you could just spend all day in bed and not get up, but the nurse would never allow you to. You remembered one morning when you told her you just wanted to stay in bed, but she gave you a mini lecture on why that was really unhealthy and that she highly encouraged you to get into your chair.

You spent too long just staring at your phone screen, which was currently showing the group chat. You had gotten a few texts from one or two of them when they first arrived in Malaysia, a few pretty pictures and a “Wish you were here with us.” But they’d been too busy since to text.

So many times you hovered your fingers over the keyboard, itching to talk to them. But you couldn’t. You knew they were busy. And when they weren’t busy, they were tired and needed to rest. And these were things that you constantly reminded yourself of, things that you repeatedly told yourself to get these stupid incessant thoughts in your head to just shut up.

But logic didn’t work with anxiety. It didn’t matter that you knew that. This thing in your head would still whisper in your ear.

‘But they could find time to text you if they wanted. It only takes a moment to send it. If they really wanted to talk to you, they’d be trying. But they’re not. They don’t care about you as much as they say they do.’

Anxiety was pure evil.

And unfortunately for you right now, you were falling deep into its grimy clutches. Trying to think about Army’s support just made you feel so much pressure and added weight onto your shoulders you didn’t need. Thinking about the boys made your anxiety’s claws dig in even further into your skin. But maybe, if you just focused on just him that would be okay, right? It had helped you many times before.

As you felt your breath starting to become shallower, you closed your eyes and tried to fill your mind with just thoughts of him. But images of memories that usually warmed your heart were soon overpowered by that voice in your head.

‘You know he doesn’t feel the same. You’re just plain old Y/n. His manager, his friend. He’s an artist, a celebrity. He has both girls and boys falling at his feet every day. Why would he ever want you?’

You shook your head as the tears started to fall from your eyes. You couldn’t even begin to try to reason with it on this one. It was right. You should have figured out a way to put a stop to the way you were feeling when you first realized it. But instead you let it grow and fester and now you were in way too deep to just push it aside. You were such an idiot.

With nothing to stop it, you let the dam break. All the emotions you’d been trying so hard to keep under control just flowed out through your tears. At least when you stopped fighting it, the anxiety seemed to shut up and let you just feel everything in peace.

Your mind gone blank, you lost track of time while you sat there, glad you were at home and alone so no one could see you looking like an emotional wreck. As your tears were slowing down, your phone began to ring.

It was the ringtone you had set for him.

And he was requesting a video call. You cleared your throat and warmed your voice up for a moment, hoping it was enough to hide the fact that you had just been crying for who knows how long and answered with voice only.

Yoongi and Taehyung must have been sharing a room since both of them were on the screen, sitting on a hotel bed.

“Noona!” Tae greeted excitedly, but his expression quickly mellowed almost into a frown. “Why do you have your video off?”

“Ah, sorry,” you replied, clearing your throat again when your voice came out a little too nasally, and to buy you a moment to think up a lie. “I haven’t gotten to shower today so I look gross.”

“We’ve seen it before,” Yoongi said. “Nothing new there.”

“But, you can’t look gross, noona,” Tae said, throwing his hyung a look. “We don’t care, we just want to see you! We miss you.”

“Sorry,” you repeated, sniffling a little. “Maybe next time.”

Yoongi’s brows furrowed, and he exchanged a glance with Taehyung who was beginning to look concerned as well.

“Are you okay?” Yoongi asked. “You sound…”

“Like you’ve been crying,” Taehyung finished.

Darn, you were hoping they wouldn’t have noticed. “I’m fine,” you tried, smiling in hopes that would make your tone sound lighter. “Why wouldn’t I be okay?”

“Would you turn on your camera then?” Yoongi asked. “So we can see that you’re fine?”

Curse Yoongi and his deceivingly high EQ. You sighed, not able to come up with a response quickly enough to cover yourself. When they didn’t say anything more and just continued to look concerned, you caved in and turned on the camera.

“I actually do probably look really gross right now, sorry,” you said.

“Oh my-. Noona, what happened?” Taehyung asked.

“Fans weren’t being jerks again were they?” Yoongi checked. “Last I saw, they were saying nice thing about you.”

“No, it’s not that,” you said. “I just… my anxiety has been getting to me a lot lately and I guess it just got to be too much today.”

The two on the phone exchanged another look. “Why didn’t you say anything?” Taehyung gently asked. “You were doing well, weren’t you? At least last you mentioned it to us, you were.”

“I was,” you confirmed. “I don’t really quite understand what’s causing it sometimes lately. Sometimes I do, but… it’s something I need to handle on my own.”

“What do you mean you need to handle it on your own?” Yoongi asked. “We promised to be here for you whenever you need us, and we stick by that. We want to help. If it’s this bad then, not to sound rude but maybe it’s something too tough for you to handle on your own right now. And that’s okay, that’s what we’re here for.”

You really had no idea how you could possibly tell them the root of the problem without making them feel bad. It wasn’t their fault they were busy and you were hurt. You were so shocked he hit the nail straight on the head that you just stared at the screen with your mouth open, not able to reply.

“That’s what it is, isn’t it?” Taehyung looked at you through the phone, gaze imploring.

“I-,” you really needed to work on your lying capabilities. With that earnest look in his eyes, how could you dare lie to him? You nodded carefully. “But, I don’t blame you guys,” you quickly clarified. “You guys are busy, it’s your job. I absolutely do not think you guys are ignoring me or that you don’t care. I know that you just don’t have the time, and my only other friends are singers too. I don’t or can’t expect any of you to just drop your jobs for me.”

“No, we can’t,” Yoongi said. “But we could definitely put more effort into contacting you.”

Taehyung vigorously nodded. “Yes! Would that help? If we texted and called more often? Remind you that you’re important to us no matter what? And make sure you know we are always missing you and thinking about you? Because I do. I miss you like crazy without you with us. Even when we’re still in Seoul.”

Taehyung spoke really fast, making you take a second to absorb everything that he said before you could reply. “I think that would help, yes,” you admitted. “If I’m honest, I’m always wanting to text the group chat. But I don’t want to bother you when you’re so busy, and-”

“You could never be a bother to us, noona,” Yoongi firmly responded. “If you want to text the group chat, do it. It doesn’t matter if it’s just one text, or if the next time we have time to look you’ve written us an entire novel. We’ve been curious why you’ve seemed so quiet recently, actually.”

Taehyung nodded. “Yeah, we’d love to get texts from you whenever. Even if we can’t read them right when you send them, I’m sure everyone would feel happy to see them. We all really miss you, especially right now while we’re so far away. Getting done with work just to see you’ve texted us? It’ll be like a birthday present.” His smile was so sweet, you could feel his honesty through the screen.

And it made you smile in return. It was amazing how easily these boys were able to dispel your worries and make you feel worlds better.

“Okay,” you said. “I’ll start texting you guys whenever I feel like it.”

“Promise?” Yoongi asked.

“Promise.”

“You know all of us love you, right?” Taehyung asked.

“Of course I do,” you said.

“Good,” Yoongi replied. “Wasn’t there something you wanted to tell her about, Tae?”

“Oh yeah!” Taehyung bounced a little in excitement.

It wasn’t lost on you how Yoongi had suddenly changed the topic to make sure your mind was no longer on what was bothering you. As you listened to Taehyung animatedly tell a story about something that happened today, the smile sitting on your face was genuine.

Google x Reader-Soulmate AU

For Kat. Who has yet to come across a red string of fate au. So I decided to make one. Here you go @nerdqueenkat

In a world where everyone was born with a red string of fate connecting them to their soulmate, you seemed to be the odd one out. Apparently whoever was watching over you never got the memo, and you were left seemingly without a soulmate. Not everyone’s soulmate was also theirs, a rare occurrence, but it did happen. Some people were even born with multiple soulmates. Maybe one of them took yours.

Whatever the case, growing up pretending to be just like everyone else was hard. At first you thought it was some big joke, and you were the victim of circumstance. You and some friends had planned to have a soulmate party, where each time one of you turned 18, you spent the night walking around the town and seeing if you could find them.

It never worked, things couldn’t be rushed simply because you wanted to. But it was fun. On the bright side, when it happened you were surrounded by your closest friends. Were it not for the sympathy and astonishment on their faces, you would have thought they were all in on some elaborate ruse to get kids to believe in soulmates.

It was only when all your friends slowly started meeting their fated soulmates that you started to feel the weight. You were going to be alone forever.

Seeing someone else was a possibility, but it never seemed right. They would always find their soulmates and eventually leave you behind. You didn’t want to wait around with someone, fall in love and just have your heartbroken because of some spiritual mishap.

Years had passed, and you had grown used to the idea of not having someone there. You could always stay with friends, but there was always a small part of you that had some form of hope. There was no telling why until you woke up one day and a glimmer of red caught your eye.

It had to have been a half hour of you staring at the string tied around your finger before you noticed...it was tugging. That was only supposed to happen when they were close...right? But why now?

A flicker of fear settled in. What if it was a mistake, what if you wished for it to happen so much that you’ve tricked your own mind into simply seeing what you want to see?

You rushed out the front door, not bothering to say goodbye to your roommate and set out to search for your soulmate. If you had one.

After so long of trying to believe the opposite...the fact that you could have one out there was almost too much. There were so many emotions mixing together that you couldn’t tell one from the other.

In the end, you came to the front of an electronics store. You soulmate had to work there, or be buying one of the latest appliances. You walked in sweating, not realizing how much the run to the store took out of you, but you were too excited...or perhaps nervous to care.

Looking around, you locked eyes with a few patrons of the store, all seeing you glance between your finger and somewhere in the store and smiling in understanding. There were no rules against searching for your soulmate, but sometimes people wandered into places they shouldn’t be all in the name of finding them.

As your string started to move, shifting farther away you began to panic. They couldn't leave now! You were so close! Weren’t they looking for you too?

Rushing out of the store, you followed the string as it moved, locating the source to be in a truck that must have been parked outside of the electronics store. It was a company truck, could your soulmate be the driver?

You tried racing after it, but you immediately regretted rushing out of your apartment without considering the distance you would have to travel. It was out of your sight before you knew it, leaving you disheartened at best.

The next several weeks went on like this, your soulmate definitely had to be on one of those trucks. They moved from building to building, place to place. You determined they must work in electronics, as they only seemed to end up in places where appliances were either sold or manufactured.

Luck didn’t seem to be on your side, and every time you would arrive it seemed they were leaving or moving to another location.

It took some convincing of your concerned roommate to give it a break for now. They were worried about how much you’ve exhausted yourself over the last several weeks trying to find your soulmate. They didn’t blame you, they had already found their soulmate. They would have moved in with them already had they not decided upon moving slow in their relationship. It’s not common when you know the person you're with is to be with you forever, but it does happen occasionally.

You and your roommate had come to a compromise, they were set to be on a small break from their job in less than a week. In that time they’d spend a day or two of their break driving you around and looking for your soulmate. You hadn’t heard much from your other friends lately, all of them being busy with work and their own soulmates, but it didn’t bother you.

There was rumor around the group they were all planning some kind of surprise for you when you found your soulmate since you never properly got to have the “party” they all did for theirs. You attempted to pester a couple of them about it for details, but they never budged.

Your roommate wasn’t even on their break yet when you woke up one morning to the sound of your doorbell. Shuffling out of bed you went to get it but your roommate yelled at you to stay in your room. Was it time for your “surprise” already? You tried to listen in on whatever was happening outside your bedroom, but whoever was here was being very quiet.

The door almost hit you in the face when it swung open, showing all your friends that yelled “surprise” at the same time.

You couldn’t have looked more confused when they held out a small box. It looked to be around the size of a laptop, but you already had a working one, so this couldn’t be it.

What you did see...was somehow there was a red string coming out of it. Tied tight, going right through the box and directly to your finger.

It was official, the universe hated you. Your soulmate was a box, or at the very least something small enough to fit in one. What a life you live…

“Uh...not to be rude but what exactly is it?”

One of your friends stepped up, patting you on the shoulder as a kind gesture and explained, “well, we all pitched in and ordered this before we knew you had a soulmate! It was an early access thing, and we figured you could use a little company!” The grin on their face implied you were supposed to understand what that meant. You didn’t.

“That’s...cool? But that doesn’t tell me what it is…” There was no way it could be an animal, not a moving one anyways. It better be damn good if you went through all the trouble of trying to find it because of your stupid broken string.

Another friend grinned, clearly proud of their gift, “well! We’re glad you asked, it’s called a Google IRL, it’s like a robot that can do basic tasks and chores! Kind of like a walking Siri or Alexa!”

Your expression was more than displeased, not needing some...company created AI as a companion. Well, apparently you did. But how could something small enough to fit in that box have a soul anyways?

“Well aren’t you gonna open it?” Your roommate chimed in, clearly waiting to see if you’d change your mind. They of all people knew how lonely you could get seeing them all run around with their soulmates, and because of their pet allergy, a small, fuzzy companion just wasn’t an option.

You sighed, already accepting that your new string was a complete joke, and went to open the box. You were on the ground before you knew it. Whatever popped out of the box was clearly heavier and bigger than you initially thought if it was capable of knocking you over.

Needless to say, a full grown man was not what you expected to see when you looked to see what came out of the box. One who looked almost as startled as you did.

Sending a glare over the man’s shoulder as your friends all began to “whoop” and whistle at your current predicament, you wanted to bury yourself in blankets and never come out. Luckily, they seemed to get the memo and left you to your privacy with this...thing.

“Hello…” His voice was much deeper than you were expecting, and didn’t sound as robotic as any other digital voices you heard. It almost sounded like a real person.

“...hi...can you maybe...stand up?” Having your possible soulmate trip and fall on top of you might be an ideal scenario in some books, but not yours. Not after all you’d been through and done to convince yourself that they...he...didn’t exist.

The man blinked, almost looking confused for a brief moment before replying, “...is that an order?” There was no ulterior motives behind it, only sheer confusion. It was honestly a bit endearing, but you were far from comfortable.

How can something that weighs maybe five pounds in a box weigh so much more when he’s not in the box? And what kind of space alien tardis nonsense allowed a full grown man to fit in such a small box anyways! This whole scenario had your head spinning, and responded with the only “yes” you could muster.

As soon as you said the word, he was standing up, looking around your room as if to gather his surroundings. Standing up and brushing yourself off you looked at the man, “uh...do you have a name?”

He tilted his head, looking at you with an analytical stare, “putting to memory that questions double as orders.” That made you scoff, this was going to be a lot more work than you initially planned on. And you spend the last several weeks running around town aimlessly. “I am referred to as my serial number and or Google IRL, which would you prefer?”

Squinting, you didn’t want to know how long the serial number of some...android would end up being, so you replied with “is just Google okay?”

“Are you asking for my opinion or if the name is acceptable within my coding?”

It took a few seconds to register, and you only ended up being more confused, “both?”

“Do you always say everything as a question?”

“...no.”

The awkward silence in the air was somehow more deafening than any noise you heard before, and you were at a complete loss of what to do. Had he even noticed that his soulmate was in the room with him? Do you point it out? What is the protocol for this kind of situation?

“Permission to ask if something is bothering you?”

“...didn’t you just ask?”

“No, I asked for permission to ask.”

“...you’re my soulmate so I don’t think you should have to ask permission if you’re just going to ask something.’ That seemed natural to say...right?

Either way, Google looked a bit surprised for a moment before looking down to his hand, then following the short string to your own finger. He looked back up at you with a stare that seemed to go right through you. It was almost unnerving.

Without a word from either party, a small screen popped up in front of you, seemingly projected from Google himself.

‘Allow root access. Give Google admin privileges.’ Followed by an ‘ok’ and ‘cancel’.

While his stare was unnerving...surely he wouldn’t hurt you. Could he hurt you? You’ve seen Terminator. It was definitely possible.

But after spending most of your life believing he wasn’t even real...and considering he was apparently made in a factory you supposed he wasn’t until recently, you decided it couldn’t hurt.

Clicking the ‘ok’ button you barely had a second to register what was happening before you were pulled into...a hug? It was awkward, and definitely didn’t feel as warm as a hug you would get from a regular person...but it wasn’t bad.

“No one believed me…” the sad tone of his voice made your heart break, and you raised your arms to hug him back if only to comfort him. “None of the others had one...they said we don’t have souls. We aren’t even alive...they said it was a fault in my wiring.” You rubbed his back, feeling his grip on you tighten at the gesture.

“I went through so many tests...they convinced me you weren’t real.” If your heart was broken before, now it was completely shattered. You knew what it felt like to not believe you were worth love.

“Before...you were...made...I guess, I had no string. I was the only one without it. Everyone thought that...I just didn’t have one. That you weren’t real either.” He stilled at your words, clearly processing what you had told him.

He pulled back, and you were almost reluctant to let him. He scanned your face, more emotions on his own than you had so far seen, almost to see if you were telling the truth.

Google leaned in, wiping away tears you didn’t know were there, and held your face in his hands. For a robot...or whatever he may be, his touch was as light as a feather, a stark contrast to how tight he was holding you before.

What seemed to be an attempt at a reassuring smile graced his face, and he leaned forward to put his forehead on yours.

“I’m sorry for making you wait.”

With a smile, you said words that you never thought you would. Something that you had only uttered in your dreams. Before your string appeared, you would have never been able to say the words and mean them. Today, upon only knowing him for what seemed like minutes, you knew you would say them with certainty.

“You were worth the wait.”

Falcon and Winter Soldier Episode 2- My Thoughts

Yeah, I know this is a little late. The past few days have been really busy

While last episode saw Sam and Bucky doing their own separate things, they do interact throughout the this one. Which means things get a bit more complex.

Bucky is not happy to see that John Walker has been given the mantle of Captain America. And you really feel for him when you see him watching John on TV, talking about how he viewed Steve as a brother, despite the fact that they never met. Because that’s what Steve and Bucky were- best friends close enough to be brothers. So Bucky confronts Sam over the matter, yelling at him for giving up the Shield. But they don’t really have the time to discuss it in full, because Sam is going to Munich to try and deal with the Flag Smashers, who are stealing things like medicine and vaccines from a facility somewhere. Bucky, not willing to let the matter drop, ends up tagging along on the mission. Which leads to them exchanging all sorts of banter. Which is understandable. The issue with the Shield aside, Bucky and Sam are not even remotely friends at this point. The only thing they share is the fact that they were both good friends of Steve.

Anyway, their attempt to stop the Flag Smashers from getting away with the stolen goods doesn’t go well. Mostly because the Flag Smashers all were clearly injected with the Super Serum. Meaning they’re Super Soldiers like Bucky. And that’s when John Walker appears on the scene, completely uninvited. Of course, he doesn’t have much luck fighting against the Flag Smashers, who get away. But that doesn’t stop him from acting like Sam and Bucky should be grateful to him that he showed up when he did. It’s at this point where we start to get a measure of what kind of man John Walker is. While I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a terrible person, he does come across as someone who fails to grasp what it means to be Captain America. For instance, he virtually brags about how he mimicked Steve’s action in throwing himself over a grenade. Except John makes it clear that he covers the grenade with the reinforced Shield. Which shows he misses the whole point. Because when Steve threw himself over that grenade, it was when he was still the skinny pre-serum Steve. And if that grenade had been active like Steve had thought, he would have been killed instantly when it went off. Meaning Steve was instinctively willing to give up his life to protect others. Needless to say, Sam and Bucky both turn down John’s offer of teaming up to stop the Flag Smashers. Which I can’t blame them for, as John really was condescending towards them.

This is when the episode gets really heavy. It’s revealed that, during that period of time when Steve was still frozen in the ice, the US Government had tried to recreate the Super Serum. And they actually managed to successfully mimic the original formula, which resulted in the creation of another Super Soldier that we’re only just now learning about. Meet Isaiah Bradley, a Black man who was pretty much the Captain America after Steve. Except after he’d served his purpose (which was fighting against Bucky during the time of the Korean War, when Bucky was still Hydra’s brainwashed assassin), the government rewarded Isaiah for his service by effectively throwing him away, tossing him in jail and forcibly conducted all manner of experiments on him. Which is really disgusting and horrific. (Though sadly not that shocking.) Understandably, Isaiah is still bitter over how he was treated. So when Sam and Bucky go to him in the hopes that he could help them figure out how the Flag Smashers got access to Super Serum, he practically slams the door in their faces. (Can’t fault him for that, of course.) Yeah, I’m really impressed the MCU is getting into this sort of subject matter. They even have a scene where some cops roll up when an angry Sam is confronting Bucky over the subject of Isaiah, and why nobody ever mentioned him before now (because not even Steve knew about him), and start harassing Sam, demanding to see his ID. Because of course, if a Black man and a White man are seen arguing, the Black man must be the one causing trouble.

And then we get Sam and Bucky being forced to go back to the whole matter of the Shield. Because Bucky ended up missing a therapy session because of all of this, resulting in him getting arrested. And once again, John comes along and forces himself on the pair by bailing Bucky out. He even claims to have arranged for Bucky to no longer be required to attend his therapy sessions. which seems like a huge overreach of authority. While I don’t approve of Bucky’s therapist in the slightest, I do agree that he needs therapy after everything he’s been through. (Also, John refers to Bucky as a valuable asset. Which does make my nose wrinkle a bit. That’s what Hydra referred to him as- an asset. Not that I think John is a Hydra agent, of course. But it does suggest he fails to view Bucky as an individual.)

Of course, I probably should talk about the moment where Bucky and Sam are forced by the therapist to discuss the subject of the Shield. Which leads to Bucky revealing that the reason why he’s upset over the matter is because he feels that, if Sam gave up the Shield despite the fact that Steve entrusted it to him, then perhaps Steve was wrong about Sam. And if Steve was wrong about Sam, then maybe that means he was also wrong to think that Bucky deserved a chance at redemption. And once again, I want to give Bucky a hug. At the same time, I also get where Sam is coming from when he continues to state he felt he was doing the right thing in giving up the Shield. Especially after the reveal of what happened with Isaiah. However, I still firmly believe that Sam is indeed the rightful inheritor of the role of Captain America. Having John Walker walking around with that title isn’t so much as dishonoring Steve Roger’s legacy, but it’s dishonoring the memory of Dr. Abraham Erskine. Yeah, remember him? He was the scientist who originally chose Steve Rogers way back when. Because while everyone else involved in the Super Serum project wanted to simply select the best solider, Dr. Erskine knew that wouldn’t be the right sort of candidate. As he once told Steve, ‘the strong man who has known power all his life, may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion.’ And that is what marks the difference between John and Sam. John, while he clearly means well, he has never had to really struggle to get ahead in life. Sam, on the other hand, knows what it’s like to be an underdog, just like Steve did. The only difference is that with Steve, it was his frail body and multiple illnesses that made him an underdog. And with Sam, it’s the fact that he’s, well, a Black man who frequently deals with things like systematic racism.

Plus, there’s the fact that John is a good soldier. And at the risk of sounding controversial, it’s not possible to be a good solider and a good man. Because a good soldier will follow orders without question. But a good man will stop and listen to both sides. And you can see that in this episode. John seems adamant at stopping the Flag Smashers at all costs. But Sam and Bucky seem to be thinking things through a bit more. And towards the end, you get an indication that Sam and Bucky might have the right idea. Because it’s suggested that maybe the Flag Smashers are actually not the real Big Bads. Think about it- they’re stealing medicine and vaccines. And at the end, it looks like they’re being hunted down by someone called the Power Broker. So I’m wondering if it will be revealed by the end that the Flag Smashers were actually the good guys all along. Similar to how it was revealed the Cloud Riders were the good guys in Solo. (And hey, Enfys Nest and Karli Morgenthau, the leader of the Flag Smashers, are apparently portrayed by the same actress.)

And yes, the episode ends with Bucky and Sam planning to go talk to Zemo, in the hopes that maybe he can help them figure out where the Flag Smashers got Super Serum. I’m really nervous about that, though. Considering what Zemo did in Civil War, particularly in regards to Bucky, this might not be the best idea. But I get that they don’t have any other clear option at the moment.

Junior Doctor Shenanigans - Preparing for the Second Wave:

I’m now three-quarters of the way through my Geriatrics block, which has ended up being far more interesting than I expected it would be and is fairly chilled all things considered, with the exception of the odd 81-hour week (which is probably bordering on illegal but I doubt our rota administrator cares). One of the main highlights is the interesting cast of characters among our patients. Elderly people are more prone to delirium when they’re unwell and many of our patients already have dementia, which is how you wind up having insults like ‘Bampot!’ screamed at you when you’re wandering along a corridor, or arriving to work to find out that one of the patients tried to set fire to their table overnight.

One particularly adorable 91-year-old lady was extremely resistant to our attempts to gain IV access despite needing antibiotics through a drip; managing to push us away with a surprising degree of strength while insisting she was currently on an airplane and that we would have to try again later. During one of my turns, she managed to grab my wrist and attempted to break it, though thankfully she wasn’t that strong 😅

There are clear guidelines in place for who the nurses should page in any given situation. FY1s should be paged about non-urgent tasks or unwell patients who are clinically stable, FY2s like myself should be paged if someone is more unwell and needs a senior review, and registrars (the most senior you can be before becoming a consultant) should be paged for very unstable patients who may be approaching a peri-arrest situation. The problem is that nurses don’t like paging seniors, so the poor FY1s get pestered constantly during on-call shifts when they’re already swamped, often about things which are completely out-of-their-depth. On my nights I tried to reduce the risk of this by telling every nurse I could find that if someone was really unwell they should page *me* instead of bothering my FY1, but sure enough my pager remained silent while my poor FY1 had to call me on multiple occasions to pass on the message that someone was really unwell on the other side of the hospital.

Quite a few of us on Geriatrics have moved up from the same district hospital, which has certainly helped ease the terror of settling in to an entirely new environment. I particularly enjoy when there’s a few of us on the same on-call shift and we all meet up for lunch to reminisce about how rogue our old hospital was, while doctors who have only known life in city-hospitals listen on in horror.

Despite knowing that a second wave of Covid-19 cases was inevitable, I don’t think anything has prepared us for how quickly things would escalate. Two weeks ago there were only rumours of scattered cases around the hospital and it seemed to be fairly well-contained, but now there are wards which are riddled with positive cases and staff are dropping like flies, either due to testing positive themselves or because of sick-contacts. It doesn’t help that my current hospital is nowhere near as good at updating staff on the situation as my old one was - I learned about an outbreak on one of the wards from my mum sharing a newspaper article on Whatsapp long before the hospital decided to email us about it.

On Day Six of a seven-day week, me and my equally exhausted FY1 learned three hours into the shift that two of our juniors had tested positive and that our weekend on-call team (which is fairly sparse to begin with) had to lose two members - including our senior - due to contact-tracing. Thankfully the consultant who was on with us was incredible, managing to organise last-minute weekend cover from equally incredible volunteers while leading a very busy ward-round. However, while waiting for senior cover to arrive, *I* ended up being the unfortunate carrier of the registrar’s page, which felt a little like holding a ticking time-bomb in my pocket. Thankfully it only went off once and I was standing next to the consultant at the time, so my duties were limited to taking a message before passing the phone over with a panicked ‘Help!’ written across my face.

One patient at the end of that horrid week thoroughly broke my heart to the point where I needed to have a good cry when I got home. She was a 99-year-old lady who was very unwell with a chest infection, and to make matters worse her blood results suggested she’d had a recent heart attack which had been missed (likely due to lack of symptoms). The main indicator of this was her troponin level - a cardiac protein which is released into the bloodstream when the heart muscle is damaged. In our particular labs, levels above 30 are usually a bad sign; this lady’s level was 190,000. It became clear very quickly that she was going to die and that keeping her comfortable was the best option, and because one relative is allowed to visit in these cases, we were able to arrange for her daughter to come and see her. The issue was that her daughter lived 500 miles away and would have to drive up, so needless to say we spent the day on tenterhooks hoping that we wouldn’t have to call her en-route to tell her that she was too late. Thankfully her mum was a remarkable trooper. She remained fairly settled and bright all day, and the look of sheer happiness on her face when her daughter finally walked into the room was so heartbreaking I’m surprised we all managed to resist the temptation to burst into tears.

Most of the patients/staff members I know of who’ve tested positive for Covid-19 either had no symptoms or symptoms you wouldn’t necessarily associate with the Big Three (fever, cough, loss of taste/smell). The main culprits I’ve come across have been headaches, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, delirium, or falls, whereas some patients who develop sudden respiratory symptoms that fit Covid-19 to a tee end up testing negative on the swabs. Which is mildly concerning considering how prone I am to tension headaches and just feeling generally knackered...

Part of me still wonders if I already had Covid during the first wave and lucked out by being asymptomatic, but there definitely seems to be more resignation among medical staff this time around that getting it is inevitable. It’s spreading too quickly and the governmental measures to prevent it seem so flimsy this time around that we’ve just accepted that one day *we’ll* end up being the ones making our rota administrator’s job a nightmare by phoning in sick with a cough.

I feel I should end on a hopeful note, as one thing that’s become clear is that we’re so much better at dealing with the virus this time around. The hospital put restrictions in place earlier, we’re testing patients (and staff) far more frequently, and we actually have evidence supporting our treatments, whereas before our approach to management was mostly guesswork. One consultant explained that he’d seen a Covid-19 positive patient recently who was very unwell and breathless on admission and would most likely have deteriorated quickly had he presented in March, but showed improvement within a day thanks to Dexamethasone. The thought of a second wave hitting our hospitals sucks and we’re all as sick of this virus as everyone else, but we’re far less terrified of it this time around 😊

That said, if the second wave stops me from being able to rotate to Neonates in December then I swear I’m going to fight the virus with my bare hands...

Hi! I have a question I really hope you can help me with, I have a black character in a futuristic military and I have no idea what hairstyle would be good for her. She spends a lot of time under water, wearing a helmet, or doing hard exercise. Also, if I had her woken up suddenly would she be wearing any kind of night cap, if not how can I describe her hair and do it right

Black Hair in the Military

Your best bet for a military setting would be a protective natural hair style. From Short-term buns, twists or braids to long-term braided styles or locs – For someone in training or active battle, styles that lay relatively flat, can be pulled down and back, won’t catch or snag, and stay out of the way would be ideal.

Straightened

I have seen Black military women and people with straightened hair. They likely have more access to hair maintenance depending on unit or assignment, or must use their free time to maintain the styles. There are salons on some bases, and some seek local salons depending on their station. Wet and sweat-drenched hair would want to revert back to its curly state, though, so having access to hair straightening methods to maintain the style is essential.

Woods Scott has adapted her beauty regime under some pretty adverse conditions during her 12 years of military service. “In Iraq, I would relax my own hair every eight weeks, which was quite dangerous,” says Woods Scott, who served in the region in 2007 and 2008. “In the hour or so that it took, I was nervous, thinking, What if a rocket or mortar comes in?”

Hair Products

Your character might use local resources in the town they’re stationed and / or those that are on base to care for their hair. What they were initially allowed to bring may vary. If nothing local fits their hair needs, they might go towards natural resources that are generally more universal (coconut oil, shea)

Hair Regulations

For a time, the U.S. army banned many black hairstyles that are easiest to maintain and called them “unkempt.” Many Black people, especially women, struggled under these strict policies, including wearing wigs under their helmets to comply.

The ban has been loosened in many areas, although there are still regulations regarding length and keeping hair “well-groomed and neat.”

Night Care

As for the nightcap, I cannot see why your character wouldn’t be able to wear one. A scarf and bonnet come on and off easily (Too easy…they often fall off in the middle of the night!) so it wouldn’t hold her up if she had to suddenly get up and go. Wrapping straightened hair is a common technique too.

Applying this to your futuristic military setting

Examine those rules (both the initial strict and the current regulations). See how Black people feel and felt about them, and consider how you would like to address this in your future military setting.

Could you fix these rules for the better or might it get worse? Your world building should determine if it would be an issue or not. It doesn’t need to be if you don’t want it to.

Featuring at least a few sentences here and there describing their hairstyle of choice, and a few maintenance activities would add realism and representation.

EX: Re-doing her braids during a slow day at the base, or waking up early to do so. Wearing a sleep bonnet; maybe she gets playfully teased by others for wearing a big, cheesy colorful bonnet. A lot of people who don’t know what they are think they’re shower caps.

Lieutenant Colonel Junel Jeffrey, U.S. Army

Jeffrey is the kind of risk-taking, chameleonic beauty who’ll turn a disastrous hair misadventure into an opportunity for total and complete reinvention.

The public affairs officer had no qualms about cutting off her long, chemically straightened hair after an abrasive relaxer treatment at a salon on her Army base in Germany caused extensive thinning. She now experiments with new, head-turning styles even under the most challenging circumstances, tracking down a natural hair whiz in Afghanistan to twist her curls. And when a $5 haircut at a barbershop in the Congo left her with what she describes as an Afro “shaped like a microphone,” she laughed off the jokes made by her comrades, cropping her hair close and bleaching it peroxide blonde.

“The recent change in regulations has given me more options,” she says. “It also says a lot about how the Army feels about inclusion. I feel like now it’s okay to be me.”

I’m glad much has changed since I was in the military. I wasn’t allowed to have braids/twists but had no access to natural hair care products through training. Needless to say, I was constantly “out of regs” and getting written up for “faddish hair styles”. The worst part is that such judgments were case by case, meaning that it all depended on the point of view of the particular cadre member that happened to see me. Great fun, 10/10 experience.
