Increased One Piece posting on my dash has reminded me of how way back when Ivanov was relatively recently introduced character I was unreasonably mad about the extreme body shape changes with the speedHRT hormone powers. And then also got mad about fandom ignoring Zoro's fairly character-important opinions on women and how they aren't in any way inferior to men, or different in ways that ought to matter.

Which resulted in me writing this very stupid and fun fic which I absolutely did not post online, in which Zoro got spontaneously transformed into a female version of himself by some Grand Line bullshit and ignored it, as he is wont to do anything he decides is meaningless.

And he was so buff that despite his continuing to exercise topless on deck nobody else noticed for like a week.

I won't lie

This took me longer than it needed bc UR RIGHT. HE IS ALREADY HELLA DRIPPY AND I WAS STRUGGLING SO BADLY HEWKHDJAHDSJHS

But HE'S HERE NOW!!! Alive and real as ever >:D and I'm gonna take this as a chance to infodump abt how he'd be able to fit in into the AU

Originally he wasn't supposed to be part of this AU but— I've thought abt it a lot and here's what I got for him!

• He takes place as the main group's designated driver! Especially during missions and bounties they'd do (he gets a share of the rewards in return). The reason why he became their driver- I'll explain in a later bullet.

• If it wasn't obvious enough, he's the culprit as to why BF wears a tank top HSAJHSKAHD. BB wears them a lot and wanted to match with his brother still :) and BF complies anyway!

• He has a medium amount of chrome installed, majority of it being for medical reasons.

• The reasons themselves being that- I'd like to incorporate his original backstory into this AU as well, so he DID get shot once in the heart (and probably beat up quite badly for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and also protecting GF just like in canon).

• Instead of GF's father reviving him—since the supernatural doesn't exist in this AU—he actually pays for all the surgeries BB had to go through (and just overall medical bill).

• BB had to go through a pretty lengthy recovery considering what he had to go through (being shot and all, and his body having to adjust to the chrome installed). It could practically be considered a coma.

• By the time he's fully well, everything and everyone around him has changed by a lot. Especially his brother BF.

Just as a FYI: BF's mask is part of his face. It was installed during BB's recovery (before it though, yes, he did have a fully normal face). So you can only imagine the shock BB felt when he saw his brother again.

• BB wasn't originally part of the main group, as he was mostly just doing his own thing while also assisting his brother sometimes. But after what happened to him, and hearing how BF goes bounty hunting to earn more money, he decided to join them to look out for his brother.

• BF didn't want this (especially since he didn't want his big bro to get hurt again) but BB insisted anyways.

• Fortunately, he wasn't going to be in on the action- as he offered to be the group's designated driver instead! He knows the city quite well, and he didn't really want a repeat of what happened to him anyways.

• Regarding his chrome- he did go through surgery to replace his heart with an artificial one instead.

This makes him act a little differently than before actually, since he struggles to feel emotions the same way as before.

Often times, the upbeat front he shows isn't as genuine as he'd like it to be. And most of the time he feels a little more numb. But he tries still.

BACKSTORY

attended law school to become a prosecutor with his childhood friend, vowing to punish the corrupt, side-by-side. fair and square, as it should be (and rarely is).

...but the system's a dumpster fire, actually! none of his mentors cared if a defendant was innocent-- all that mattered was adding another win to their record. he'd never make a difference in a place like that. hell, he couldn't even stomach being near them!

so he left, quit altogether until circumstances had him taking up a different badge, this time gunning to defend. he's been going at it ever since.

with a strong sense of justice, ofc! he fights for the underdogs in society, even if it means pushing the law to its limits.

yes, his fancifully-named firm, Brave Vesperia(TM), was run by a preteen in this AU, too. to be fair, yuri was the only attorney there; the others employees just did... whatever.

gained notoriety after exposing some high-profile criminals (through questionably-legal means, mayhaps), but the fame drove him up the wall. 'sides, it was his childhood-friend-turned-rival that put them behind bars in the end, without the need for dirty tactics...

still knows how to swing a sword, just at a hobbyist's level! can and WILL throw hands, though, so don't try him. or do it, baby, he knows the law.

repede was training to be a K-9 unit before yuri left the prosecutor's office. don't worry-- they keep him in the defendant's lobby during trials (99% of the time; he may have been on the witness stand once or twice).

unaware of his own AU shenanigans, but he has a gut feeling. the lawyer senses are tingling...

SPRITE ANIMATIONS

idle/speaking - there's a hint of an easy smirk, a hand at his hip. with the amount of nonchalance on display, you'd think he has this case in the bag (as if...).

thinking - fingers brought to his chin, eyes shut. he never tries to think too hard if he can help it, so there's only the slightest of forehead wrinkles.

exasperated - get on his nerves and earn a show of crossed arms, a huff, and an unimpressed eyeroll. a look that reads: "waste any more of our time and i'll show you a real penalty."

taunting - oop, he's propped against his desk, chin resting on his palm amidst a wolfish, verbal onslaught. to some, the flippancy is an insult all its own.

sweating - though cool under pressure, yuri can't hide the slight jolt backwards, his brow furrowed with a squiggly frown to match. but when things get really bad...

angry - slam! his fist hits the desk, grit teeth restraining a nasty retort on the tip of his tongue (too bad he can't afford the penalty).

objection! - he does this a lot, if only to get under the prosecution's skin-- flinging fingers and all. it's the closest he'll ever get to unsheathing a sword in battle!

IT'S TIME!!! IT'S FINALLY TIME FOR THE RANT ABOUT 19TH-CENTURY PORTUGUESE URBANISM!!!! (@kingkendrick7 mentioned they were interested a While ago and who am I to withhold information about my Interests)

I'll be focusing exclusively on the city of Porto in northern Portugal because it's what I studied in my Anthropology class. And also: disclaimer! I'm translating all the names of the things from Portuguese so if it sounds weird, yeah, that's why.

The Industrial Revolution in Portugal created a very weird relationship between work and personal life due to the way the cities were planned. Basically, the people who worked the factories, and even the owners, lived extremely close to their place of work - and I mean they were pretty much neighbours. The factories were also built in the city centre itself. This is much more similar to the work-life relationship of rural areas than any model existing in normal cities.

There was, at this time, a strange impasse when it came to building housing. Porto specifically is known for having extremely thin and deep plots of land in the oldest parts of the city - I'm talking 5 by 100m (approx. 16 by 328ft). No house is gonna be that deep, so there's always about 80 to 70m of backyard.

Workers were paid extremely low wages. Like, so low they couldn't afford housing anywhere. So the factory owners would ✨selflessly✨ give up their backyards and build housing for their workers.

Can we just take a moment to think about how absurd this is? Like. Imagine taking pity on your employees for being poor. My brother in Christ, WHO DO YOU THINK IS MAKING THEM POOR?

Anyway, this new type of housing is called an Island. Its name comes from the fact that it's an "island" of low-income housing in a semi-rich neighbourhood.

Basically, an Island is a long exterior corridor with tiny houses on one or two sides and communal bathrooms at the end. Here's a picture:

The way this worked is that the owners of the big, street-front house would open a passage on the ground floor that could be fully closed wuth a gate. This kept the Islands invisible and, thus, out of the city hall's jurisdiction, since they can only legislate on what is visible from street level.

Btw they tried solving this problem bt building houses from scratch but they realuzed that workers' wages were so low that just adding plumbing would make a house unaffordable. Yeah...

Porto currently stands as the European city with the most recent outbreak of the Bubonic Plague, in 1899. This is because Islands had such poor hygenic conditions that it re-kindled the Black Plague epidemic. Just so you can kinda picture what level of "horrible" this whole thing is.

Here's a quote by David Moreira da Silva about the Islands that I translated from French:

"Housing, essential organ of the city, offers us in Porto obe of the most miserable and tragic displays and one of the grave causes that greatly contribute to the huge mortality that is constant. We say, justly, that Porto as a city is the vastest cemetery in Europe."

(Parallel to this there was also the "Sleep Business", which consisted of renting places to sleep. The main two were sub-renting, in which you rented a place to sleep and paid by the hour, and the Rope, in which you rented a piece of rope to lean on while sleeping. Thought it might be interesting to add.)

I'm not mentioning as we go because it'd be exhausting, but backlash was VERY strong every step of the way. Doctors were warning against living conditions in the Islands and city hall was trying to pass laws banning these types of buildings by extending their jurisdiction deeper into the city's plots of land. But they were unsuccessful.

They tried to propose a rehabilitation of the Islands in the early 20th century but their inhabitants basically responded with "Please tear our houses down and make us new ones somewhere else. The Islands are unsalvageable".

The whole factory work-life thing ended with the fascist dictatorship, which reorganized the city centre, but there's still plenty of people living in Islands today.

To this day, the Islands stand as a warning of what rampant capitalism does to people when left unchecked. But that doesn't stop tone-deaf bourgeois pricks from romanticizing them.

Okay, so the context (and sneak peak, I guess) is Phoebe and Coop are discussing how she wasn't willing to be with Coop until she finds out about the future. Phoebe brings up how everytime she pursued the love she wasn't "suppose to," aka Cole and Miles, it goes poorly and her family is hurt in the crossfire. It's not- Okay, well, it wasn't intended to be a very in-depth thing bc it's just a oneshot that's gotten out of control on me again, but I realized that parallel between Phoebe's relationships with Cole and Miles and am kinda liking the idea of third time the charm-ing it, tbh. (I also bring up Dex, bc like I said! This is getting out of control on me again!)

She doesn't really delve deep into that relationship, so it's kinda your mileage may vary on that but here's the lines about it:

" I thought that it was just because it was Cole. But then I fell for someone I wasn’t supposed to be with, Miles, and I thought that I could change his fate. I thought I was supposed to change his fate, and instead I hurt my family again."

Idk, did that make sense? Any input is greatly appreciated!!
