Time for a story without Kathryn or Seven 😉 I felt like Tom really deserved one after this episode. I hope you'll like it. 🖖
Summary: Tom reflects on his away mission in the comfort of his own quarters, with his wife and unborn child at his side.
Takes place right after the episode "Friendship One" (S07E21).

Star Trek: Voyager Barge of the Dead
What are you still doing here? I released you to Sto'Vo'Kor. You can't free me until you free yourself. I don't understand. You never did. I did everything that the ritual told me to do. I came back for you. Forget the ritual. It's meaningless. Meaningless? I died for you! No, you didn't. It's not your time. You still don't understand this journey. Then tell me! Request denied. What do you want? Who are you asking? You. Kahless. The tooth fairy. Anybody who will tell me what I am supposed to do! You are the only one who can answer that question. Choose to live, B'Elanna. You've taken the first step of your journey. And what about you? We will see each other again. In Sto'Vo'Kor. Yes, in Sto'Vo'Kor. Or, maybe, when you get home.

She remembered the smell of the coconut oil in the black cast-iron skillet. The sound of it catching fire. The sparks like fireflies in the backyard.
She remembered the feel of the fork as she mashed the banana. The best ones had black spots, just overripe but not too wet, not too sweet. It was her job to press the fruit into a paste. The first ingredient to go in the bowl. 'The foundation of the recipe', that’s what her grandmother called it. "Breakfast is built on this banana. Today is built on breakfast. Your life, B’Elanna, is built on today."
They added the other ingredients on top of the mashed banana paste. She pretended it was the weather. A maple syrup flood. Flour snow. Mixed all together in a baking tornado. Then added to the pan, three at a time. More than once she was too impatient and when the pancakes flipped they fell apart in a banana mash-flour snow-oat milk ribbon mess.
But even the ugly ones tasted like home.
She handed the fork to Miral. Carefully showed her how to mash the fruit. Grinned when the child decided to do it her own way. Just like Tom. Just like her.
They created weather together. They made sparks like fireflies. They measured out three pancakes at a time. And they flipped them too soon. But even the ugly ones tasted like home.
"Breakfast is built on a banana," she told her daughter. "Today is built on breakfast. And your life, Miral, your whole beautiful life, is built on today."
Miral touched her fat, wet, banana-mush-covered hand to B’Elanna’s cheek.
Today was perfect.

I personally think they should have been stranded in the delta quadrant longer. Miral would have caused so much havoc. Storming the bridge insisting uncle Chakotay read to her. Harry playing his clarinet for bb Miral. Seven babysitting joking she assimilated Tom and B’Elanna’s child.

What do we all think the inciting incident for B’Elanna divorcing Tom finally winds up being? Here’s a few scenarios I’ve been mulling over:
- The Chakotay intervention: Chakotay pulls her aside for a besties intervention. Gives her the whole “this guy is not right for you” spiel but so so earnestly and thoughtfully. She should be happy. She should be cherished. He’s been holding back out of respect for her choices but every-time he sees her she’s miserable about her home life, dodges questions about her marriage to talk about engineering conundrums. Take some time for yourself.
- Goes to hell 2!: A dream conversation with her mom. Or a near-death conversation with her mom. Or an hallucinatory conversation with her mom. Its difficult, like always. They talk past each other, like always. But something clicks. Her mom was probably trying her best most of the time. But B’Elanna can do better for herself, and for Miral. It’s time to walk away.
- Childhood Nun: B’elanna has a run in with one of the Sisters from the monastery on Boreth. Several of them had been keeping up with news on the Voyager and its Chief Engineer once the Federation had re-established contact with the lost ship. They hoped B’Elanna was living honorably under Kahless’ teachings, wherever she was. B’Elanna is not the most stoked to run into one of the nuns from her childhood, and is even less stoked when the nun brings up the Story of the Promise and Kahless’ exhortations that “You are Klingons. You need no one but yourselves.” B’Elanna doesn’t want to be alone, she spent so long needing no one but herself, so it’s not that she suddenly buys into the story but...maybe in regards to the alienation she faces in her own marriage, it would be better to once again need no one but herself. And that way, Miral will not have to follow that same Promise, and become as lonely as she was.
- Impossibly, Lwaxana Troi is here: Lwaxana Troi, daughter of the Fifth House, holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed has a chance encounter with B’Elanna Torres, Chief Engineer of the USS Voyager, daughter of Miral. Possibly they meet as B’Elanna is starting out in her new career as Federation Liaison. Lwaxana causally brushes aside all questions about politics and negotiations, she’d “rather talk about you, darling.” After a long discussion about the nature of loneliness and contorting yourself into smaller and smaller configurations, shrinking yourself just to avoid being alone, B’Elanna subsequently quells whatever border disagreement she was assigned to, and goes and gets the divorce paperwork.
- The “hit the bricks” scenario: B’Elanna just finally hits her limit. If it sucks, get out. No big conversation with anyone, nothing particularly egregious on Tom’s part (apart from his normal behavior of ignoring her hobbies, projecting his fantasies of what a marriage should look like onto her, leaving her to go to do whatever has caught his interest that week, etc.). Something just quietly changes inside her. The dam opens. She deserves better than this. She leaves.

Y'all I just realized Miral Paris would be the right age to be in Prodigy season 2.
Miral Paris would be 7-ish depending on what months everything takes place. She's born in 2378 and Prodigy starts in 2384, but we're not given months and I don't think it'd be a stretch that between "Lost and Found" and the start of S2, eight months to a year have passed (4-6 months for all of season one then possibly a time skip between seasons) (so at most Miral would be six when Prodigy started but if she was born in January and Prodigy starts in December then she'd be almost seven plus the possible year makes her almost 8). Which would make her the youngest of the crew but I get the sense that Rokk is around ten to twelve.
But if Alexander Rozhenko is anything to go by, Klingon's age faster than humans (Alexander was 9 when he fought in the War with the Dominion) so age her up to about 14 in human years*.
Now imagine S2 Prodigy opens with Janeway and the kids well into their mission of preparing to enter the wormhole and go rescue Chakotay, and they stop at some random starbase where B'Elana has been assigned chief engineer. Tom stays at home with his three quarter-Klingon daughters who just run him ragged. He's a little bored because he's a pilot and there's not much use for that aboard a space station aside from occasionally shuttling around diplomats but honestly, he loves his wife and kids so much that he makes the sacrifice. Really, Miral and her two sisters keep him busy enough that he's not left with too much time to be bored and Harry is just a sector away and visits every couple months (Uncle Harry (now Lt. Junior Grade) isn't great with the kids but they just fucking love him anyway).
Anyway, there's a small family reunion and we learn that Miral has been begging her parents to let her take the Starfleet academy early-entrance exams but Tom and B'Elana are (understandably) worried about their kids leaving the nest considering that being lost from home and the ones you love for seven years can be traumatizing. But the prodigies don't have long to stay, just a quick resupply then off to the wormhole.
And Miral stowsaway. They don't figure it out until long after it's too late to go back. Janeway comments that she has too much of her father in her and that her mother is likely going to kill Janeway for letting this happen but they'll just have to take her with them for now.
The Prodigy kids get to see a glimpse of what growing up with a family would've been like and Miral challenges and helps them in other ways. Rokk finally has someone else closer to her age to interact with. Miral's Klingon temper and wit keep Jankom on his toes. In season one, Dal learned how to take responsibility and leadership but season two he's going to need to learn how to take orders and be lead, Miral helps this by constantly reminding him that he's not her superior officer and doesn't get to boss him around. Miral's arc in turn mirror's her parents' Voyager arcs: She learns to rely on others and when to allow herself to be impulsive and when to plan things out and respect authority.
By the Prophets please let me have this.
*It's possible Klingon's have a shorter childhood and pre-adolescent stage but a longer adolescent stage than humans. Alexander was 9ish in the War with the Dominion but Worf and Alternate Future Miral were ensigns at 23/24. This would fit with their biology because I want it to and it works well with this post even though I have no factual evidence to support this claim they're predators so you assume they reach the age where they can join the hunt quickly but then slow down so they can learn more from their pack.

This is not my favorite episode to say the least but I couldn't help but notice that it was Seven who told Kathryn the baby news. This is my version of how that might have gone. 😉
Summary: Kathryn receives the news about B'Elanna's pregnancy from Seven.
Missing scene from the episode "Lineage" (S07E12).
