semi-live reactions to the LL;
Okay well, I think I'll just summarize.
All notes below the cut.
As expected, the live letter is focusing on job adjustments and additions. -They're trying to make major abilities across all jobs maintain a 60 or 120-second cooldowns, with some exceptions. With the intention being to align more of those "burst windows," in parties, especially in endgame raiding/content. -They re-emphisize that not all abilities will be on these 2 timers and YoshiP specifies Ley Lines will remain 90 seconds and regrets BLM being "neglected" lmao. "Everybody gets their burst, then I come in 30 seconds later with my lay lines"
Okay, job action video before they get into specifics, lets see what I can spot lmao;
[originally I had all my reactions to the trailer here, to keep organized, I'm combining that with the specific job notes]
That was a lot, sorry lmao. I think instead of typing more, I'll just add notes about the jobs as they go in depth after my first impressions above ^ Sounds like Summoner has the most hype with the audience. They made a comment that Summoner is now Ultima Weapon lmao.
Job Class notes: Tanks; -I guess using certain buffs in combination with certain skills increases their benefit? Not very specific, but I guess an incentive to think more about which cool downs you use and when and in concert with other skills. -Combo chains will no longer be broken when using ranged attacks. Nice! Sounds like this is being added to melee dps as well. -Looks like both Phys and Magic Damage will differ and be an important aspect? They sure talk a lot about this but I'm not sure the practical application. I guess just in determining to use tank skills that decrease either phys damage or magic damage? I guess they just adjusted some stats through the game and are just saying the numbers will be different so raiders don't piss themselves.
YoshiP is a cat boy lmao. Yoshi-nyan dskjfl lmao "I'm 48 years old!"
-Paladin: Trailer: [Looks like updates to skills and attacks with new graphics, or just new skills. Don't know PLD well enough to say for sure. Looks like Passage of Arms also included an attack of some sort while the PLD was immobile. 3 new attacks that look like AOEs that rain swords down on the enemies in various forms.] -Requiescat is no longer depending on MP value. -Ah, the sword-rain is a new 3-part combo starting with Confiteor (the level 80 PLD skill) -Gap closer is now 20y instead of 15y. -No drastic changes otherwise. About what you can expect from ShB with just other tweaks to match overall gameplay changes.
-Warrior: Trailer Reaction: [Has a cooldown that gives you little fire embers aesthetically. Looks like base combo attacks might get buffed.] -Abilities that increase damage are now extended (and even triggered) by the AOE combos. (instead of having to weave-in, like, Storm's Eye in the middle of a combo, especially for AOE combos) -Onslaught and Upheaval no longer drain the Beast Guage. They're now on a charge-use basis, I guess? And Onslaught will have a new combo move. -New skill being added when using Inner Release. Inner Release now has 60s cooldown, increasing use-frequency.
-Dark Knight: Trailer: [New/updated aoe attack, and can cast a shield on a single party member. Frey summon looks more in synch, but I haven't used that a lot so idk if that's different.] -Salted Earth will now just be placed at your feet (instead of being a placable aoe), and now combos into a new move. YoshiP admitted to having a macro to do this pre-EW, so they all decided that was silly. -lmao, Fray/simulacrum will also be sure to learn new skills as the player does. -Single-target defense buff. -Delirium cooldown decreased to 60s. -Gap closer also increased to 20y, like PLD.
-Gunbreaker: Trailer: [Either I don't play GNB enough or most of it looked the same except one cartridge aoe skill at the end lol. They do have a 3rd cartridge that can be stored, though.] -The Gnashing Fang+Savage Claw+Wicked Talon (lvl 60 skills that use a cartridge for the first skill) combo will now be reduced to a single action that switches between the 3 skills, to reduce the space it takes on the hot bar. -Continuation will now (only?) follow Burst Strike. I'm not 100% sure if they're saying Continuation is getting an additional action to follow Burst Strike and will also combo with the Gnashing Fang combo, or if it's JUST Burst Strike, now. -Getting a 3rd cartridge, as I noticed. -Gap closer also increased to 20y.
Melee DPS: -Feint will now decrease both physical and magical damage on the target, but the physical debuff will be more potent. (sounds like Addle will get a similar change) -Again, combos will not be broken by using ranged attacks. Consideration for when phys dps needs to move away from targets for aoes and such.
-Dragoon: Trailer reaction: [Got some flasy moves that look like new aoes, but mostly just new attacks looks like. Summons two dragons for some kind of ultimate end-combo move. And has a flowery attack that reminds me of FF9's dragoon flavor with Freya] -Increasing the AoE rotation. A lot of jobs could use this, so this was on my hopes list for EW. -Adding new actions if you do your base rotations right. lmao They comment on how flashy they are, which is true. -Sounds like many skills are being increased in power rather than adding a bunch of new skills to fill our hotbars. -Blood of the Dragon will now be a trait, rather than a skill that needs to be kept up constantly. (nice!) -Spineshatter Dive (DRG's earliest gap closer) will now have 2 charges instead of the one use, for increased mobility. -Lance Charge (self damage buff) has recast time decreased to 60s. Battle Litany (party crit buff) recast decreased to 120s.
-Monk: Trailer: [Has a new gauge added to its other, but no greased lightning gauge. Collecting more stickers ala BRD and SAM. Looks like their gap closer was updated to stack or be used multiple times quickly. Impressive looking attacks and aoes, but I don't play MNK enough to comment much lmao. Hope its less tedious!] -DAMN LOOK AT THAT JOB ART -Greased Lightning gone forever, so; -Chakras unlocked at a lower level. -New system; After using Perfect Balance, the player can use a new skill called Masterful Blitz. How the Blitz executes and what it does will change depending on what skills the player uses while using Perfect Balance. (much in line with Sabin's Blitz skill in FF6, it sounds to me). -Sounds like the player needs to use skills with some thought to maintain a balance of yin and yang chakras. Sounds like the translator is trying her best, but I think it'll come across better with some practice or seeing it in action better than the job trailer. -Oh, they are going to show a video-- -Showin off Thavnarian a little bit, lol -Each skill seems to have a specific association when used in Perfect Balance, that then add to either Yin or Yang (not final names sounds like). And if you get a charge of each, the next use of the skill unleashes a larger attack. I guess it's similar to trying to get three specific suits as AST. -I guess more/better info to come during the media tour. -Perfect balance with have a 2-stack charge, charging every 40s. -Sounds like some or more MNK skills will have their directional requirements removed to make this new system more manageable. -Shoulder Tackle (gap closer) is being removed, and is being replaced with a new gap closing action. Sounds like it wont do damage, but can be used to close the gap between both enemies AND allies (like Aetherial Manipulation with BLM). It comes with 3 stacks! Thats a lot of movement at once, with 30s recharge per charge.
-Samurai: Trailer: [Looks like Meikyo Shisui (the buff that lets you use your sticker-granting skills without doing the full combo) either has a massively reduced cooldown, a way to refresh it faster or just a second charge. Looks like the same is true of Tsubame-gaeshi (the skill that lets you use a sticker-using skill a second time)(I swear I don't have these names memorized, I only know their pictures. I'm looking them up). Possibly a new attack that uses meditation stacks, or I just forget what the level 80 skill looks like. Finishes with some kind of massive attack. So just lots of deeps for SAM.] -Mid-combo attacks that grant buffs can now also be obtained from aoe skills as well, like WAR. So that you don't either have to perform a single-target combo in the middle of fighting multiple targets, or don't have to just go without those buffs. -I was correct; Meikyo Shisui and Tsubame-gaeshi now each have 2 stacks. -You also get the mid-combo buff if you use the final move of a combo under the effect of Meikyo Shisui. Nice nice! Exactly things I wanted for SAM.
-Ninja: Trailer: [omg, a skill that grants auto-Huton I love it <3. Either Bushin now ends with a finisher skill (like automaton queen), or NIN has a new ranged attack. Oh shit!! A gap closer that actually does damage! Looks like it combos off of Raiton (lightning ninjutsu). Oooh, and there's a second follow-up lightning attack as well! NIN is gonna be interesting!] -New actions linked to Raiton (lightning ninjutsu), Doton (dot ninjutsu) and Huton (that ninjutsu you need to have on all the time for decreased weaponskill cooldown) being added. -Single action to apply the effect of Huton added * 0* <3 <3. Both applies it and resets the timer. -Additional actions added while under the effect of Bunshin (the level 80 skill). For just ninjutsu, I think? -Tried to not get the ninjutsu actions even more complicated. No 4th sigil lol. -Shadow Fang (ogcd dot skill) is removed :(
-Reaper: Trailer: [Starts with some kind of charge attack? Gap closer leaves behind a portal (very neat!). Guage looks like a combo of MCH+DRK. You need 50 of the "heat guage" to summon the void monster. The monster didn't come out of the portal that was left behind, but it disappeared when the monster appeared. Oh, the gap closer is more like NIN's Shukuchi, or maybe like SAM's movement options. The Reaper teleported "backwards" and left another portal, used a couple ranged attacks then TP'd right back to the portal. Very neat. Looks like the monster never stays out permanently, but is summoned in a few ways, finishing with a timer that upgrades attacks. Kinda like DRG with dragon imagry.] -Reiterates that attacks are done with the scythe and the avatar in combination, or "serve as the avatar's vessel" to use more powerful attacks. -Has party utility, granting a buff or two. -"Unique and specialized actions give them an edge in specific combat situations" ??? Seems to refer specifically to the portal movement skill. Shukuchi+Aetherial Manipulation. -MCH-like UI tracks two guages: the Soul Guage on top in red, which slowly fills and is used to use attacks in tandem with the avatar. The Shroud Guage is on bottom in blue, and fills as attacks using the soul guage are used. Once it fills up, it allows you to become the avatar's vessel to do even bigger attacks. Very similar to the Automaton Queen in use, it sounds like. -The one I called the DRK-looking seems to actually be more like SMN's Bahamut gauge, and simply acts as a timer to tell you how long you'll have the avatar using you as a vessel. -Switched to the video. Tiny Lala reaper lmao. -Looks like the portal ability works like DNC's An Evant--you charge in a single direction for a set distance, but Reaper has the ability to port back to it for a certain amount of time. Looks like 15 seconds with maybe an additional effect if you do it within 10 seconds? -Oh! The movement skill is actually two actions that allow you to "en avant" forward OR backwards, then teleport back -Looks like the character very visually changes form while acting as a vessel for the avatar, including equipment and some evil eyes. More than just the glowing eyes WAR has for inner beast. -Mentioning that with the gauges, the job isn't really one you charge up to a burst like others, but is rather just a building crescendo. -They're not talking about it, but it looks like the "you are the vessel" gauge either expires based on a timer OR the execution of a certain number of big attacks. -There's gonna be a couple positional-based skills, but just ones involving the avatar. Similar to DRG which only has, like, 2. -Sounds like a fun job, I'm please looking forward to it. -No LB3 shown yet. YoshiP comments that the "big flashy move" Zenos uses in the Benchmark trailer is basically the Reaper's LB3.
--break time--
Ranged DPS: -Just the comment about phys dps # values changes that they've already been saying. -Timers on Troubadour, Tactician and Shield Samba have been decreased to 90s.
-Bard: Trailer: [New addition to their gauge, looks like 3 icons that keep track of what songs have been played. The gauge also says what song is currently playing, though idk who needs that. New cone aoe, looks like--Maybe an aoe version of Refulgent Arrow? Some kind of buff or party skill that uses the 3 saved icons from playing each song once, no indication of what it does. Finishes with either a new move or one that combos off of Apex Arrow, the last skill brd learns in ShB.] -Why does she look so surprised in the art? -As I noticed, playing each of the 3 songs once each grants a new action for a party-wide buff. -New action to follow-up Apex Arrow, as I also noticed. -Battle Voice cooldown reduced to 120s (from 180 :o! ) She also says Wanderer's Minuet, but that's one of the base songs already on a timer of 80s?? That doesn't seem right.
-Machinist: Trailer: [Some kind of large shotgun! Looks like an ocg aoe, but they used it very shortly after bioblaster, so its not on the same cooldown as air anchor/bioblaster. Standard combo might have slightly new animation--the bullets look like they're hitting harder or smth but it might just be a trailer thi--there are cars behind him lmao tHEY HAD CARS IN GARLEMALD THIS WHOLE TIME. Anyway... OH SHIT It looked like they just shot a bunch of BUZZ SAWS! Oh, and they just used Drill. They have Drill AND Air Anchor. Oh, Queen Automaton's final move looks bigger.] -New Skill; Chain Saw! (many folks were expecting this after they started theming many of the MCH skills after Edgar's skills in FF6. Chain saw was basically the only one missing) -As I noticed, new action for Automaton Queen. No word on the missing Bishop... -Reassemble will have 2 charges (!) They then specifically advice to keep it constantly in use lmao -Job is mechanically the same, but there will be some ability updates (like that shotgun).
-Dancer: Trailer: [Looks like they get some kind of scremin berd that does some feather attacks but doesn't cost a feather guage. Looks like a follow-up combo with Saber Dance as well. Improvisation seems to have a follow-up or possibly a new effect when it ends. Not clear what it does.] -Instead of the single-target and aoe skills having separate effects, they will be shared between the two versions. (presumably; originally you needed different weaponskill buffs to execute Reverse Cascade (single) or Rising Windmill (aoe), but now their combo moves can activate a buff to use either of them). -New actions added after successfully using Technical Finish, Improvisation and Devilment. -Again, job is mechanically the same--mostly just some tweaks and evolution into level 90. -AoE weapon skills will transform into the dance step buttons the way the single-target ones do. -Espirit gauge will fill more consistently rather than randomly.
-brief complaint about BRD's songs not applying to the BRD themself. They've gone with "no comment at this time." YoshiP-lease
Casting DPS: -Like Feint, Addle has been changed to reduce both magic and physical damage dealt by the target, with the magical debuff being more potent.
-Black Mage: Trailer: [Has a new addition to the guage that looks like a larger fire/ice needle. Activated when they switched to Astral Fire from Umbral Ice via Fire 3. Looks like they used it to cast some very nice looking fire/ice attack that refreshed the timer on Astral Fire. The special new needle also activated when they switched from A.Fire to U.Ice. The Ice move they used to switch was also new, though they still had Blizzard 3, which they opened with. Looks like Freeze granted 3 ice needles instead of 1. The new fire/ice move was also used in U.Ice mode and refreshed the timer. New fire move transitioning back to A.Fire, which they use instead of Fire 4 in standard rotation--new aoe? Flare, Despair and Xenoglossy appear to be the same.] -Enochian is now a trait! It is automatically applied when under the effect of either A.Fire or U.Ice! Rejoice! Apparently this was a long-ruminated decision. -As I noticed, new actions are available while switching correctly between A.Fire and U.Ice. Apparently its more than just the fire+ice attack. -BLM is considered "pure dps" like SAM, so they focused on its attacking ability rather than other party utility. They specify "no raise" lol -Firestarter/Thundercloud procs have had their timers extended. -Fire 2 and Blizzard 2 are each going to get buffs, increasing AoE damage. They joke about the japanese names for what is basically now Fire 5 and Blizzard 5 and what their offical names are, lmao. They had to go to the "FF Brand Committee" to nail-down the japanese names of these spells, with no precidence of spells of this level. Sounds like he's leaning towards High-Fira and High-Blizzara rather than, like... Firgyo or something completely different, lol. -Sharpcast now has a second charge.
-Red Mage: Trailer Reaction: [Has 3 buttons added to magic meter, which filled with melee attacks (both the aoe one and the normal single-target combo). Jumped back with what looked like a brief healing bubble. All 3 charges spent on what looks like an aoe version of verholy/verflare (verdispair?). Verholy looks like it was buffed, or is possibly an aoe version, and Scorch (the final rdm combo) looks updated as well, and is followed by a big aoe-lookin move that does damage in a wide row between the rdm and the target, similar to DRG's Nastrond.] -New action coming after Scorch, as I pointed out. Lots of thorns. -Verflare, Verholy and Scorch will now all be AoE attacks, added as part of the AoE rotation [in addition to their current use?] -Adding a party-wide defense buff. Probably that verassylum-looking skill I noted. Apparently its just called "Magic Barrier" rather than something fancy or ver-y, lol -Amount of mana in the guage used for weapon skills has been reduced. Manafication seems to add a full use of the melee-skills for free, rather than affecting the mana gauges. -Potency of Displacement and Engagement will become the same value, so there's no dmg loss in making the right choice.
-Summoner: Trailer: [Right off the bat I see they have a carbuncle instead of an egi? Curious about the update to the Bahamut gauge which looks like it has a stop-light of gemstones under it--same colors as ifrit, titan and garuda. Standard attacks with some updated graphics, so just, like, Ruin 5 or smth. Summoned Bahamut right away, no "Dreadwyrm Trance" phase. Bahamut seems to have a new attack. oh SHIT OH SHIT. NO EGI, MOTHERFUCKER JUST SUMMONED GARUDA REAL. Garuda appears briefly and uses a big attack. She's gone, but the emerald button is now Garuda and has a timer--all of the summoner's attacks look different, and the carbuncle is using the garuda-themed attacks. Summoned Titan now! Uses Landwaster, and now all the summoner's attacks are earth-themed. I Think I know where this is going-- Yeah, there's Ifrit with Hellfire, and now all fire-based attacks, which appears to include a gap-closer and a follow-up melee attack. Carbuncle stayed the same color throughout, so I think we'll still keep the carbuncle glamors, maybe get more colors I hope? Summon Phoenix looks the same.] -Summoner completely reworked for the 4th expansion in a row apparently, they can't keep getting away with it-!! -DoTs GONE! No Bio. No Miasma. I guess too many people complained about it. -As mentioned, Egis are gone, and the summoner now fully summons Ifrit, Garuda and Titan. Okay, they are not literally the Primals, but are nicknamed; Ifrit-Ruby, Garuda-Emerald and Titan-Topaz. Just mostly for lore-compliance... summoning is bad in this world. -Again, as I noticed; the Summoner's abilities are augmented depending on which has been summoned. -I guess they largely wanted to address the down time between summoning bahamut and phoenix where you're just standing around casting Ruin 3. -Base rotation is as I outlined above; You summon Demi-Bahamut, which gives you the power to summon the 3 primal-gems in turn, augmenting attacks as you go, then ending with the summoning of Phoenix, which lets you then summon the three primal-gems again, then back to Demi-Bahamut. No more 50-step opener or w/e lmao -Order doesn't matter--they did Garuda, then Titan then Ifrit in the trailer, but they can be summoned once each in any order. They emphisize planning on when you want to have each summon (including Bahamut and Phoenix) during fights and different phases. -Actions on the hotbar will change automatically as each primal is summoned, rather than needing 4 or so different set-ups, lol. -Summoner will keep Resurrection. But apparently it only just BARELY survived. -Display size is customizable for the carbuncle, but is only client-side. Also for each of the summons. YoshiP has some very small primals. Tiny-Titan is especially good, lol -Sounds like all glamors for the carbuncle/egi will remain, including the primal egis. The Emerald Carbuncle is used in the trailer and the live letter video because its what YoshiP likes most. -Each summon has 2-stacked special skills executable while summoned, such as Ifrit's gap-closer and melee move. -Summoning the primal-gems has a little bit of casting time to offset the amount of power behind them. Sounds like Ifrit has a longer cast time than the others, so maybe they're each slightly different. -All of Titan's attacks are instant-cast, while Garuda leaves an aoe floor dot at the target (which was an egi skill previously). -apparently did their best to not turn SMN into BLM 2 lmao
Healers: -Adding single-target buffs to all healers. -Reduced cast time for offensive spells (!!!) -Limit break area has been increased to 50y lmao, then the guy applauds it. As someone who has suffered the shorter range... I get it. -As they said before, they're splitting between 2 "pure" healers (WHM and AST) and 2 "barrier" healers (SCH and SGE) -Decreased cast time for certain healing skills, nice!
-White Mage: Trailer: [Glare II. Oh, looks like they planted some kind of flower on the battlefield? WHM Earthly Star, maybe? Looks like it explodes in a wide range of healing magic either periodically or with certain triggers (looks like it took damage from an enemy aoe and responded with an auto-medica or something). Finally an update to Holy that isn't *quite* as blinding. ...okay, now I watched it again and its still pretty blinding lmao] -Adding a "functionally and visually distinct" restorative field action. So... Earthly Star for WHM. -Beyond the global changes, though, little is changing about WHM, it will be relatively the same, being the base "pure healer." -Update to Holy, which also helps add lillies to the job gauge. -Fluid Aura, if you remember that, has been removed lmao. -Divine Benison is gaining a charge.
-Astrologian: Trailer: [Looks Minor Arcana just draws one of the 2 minor arcana cards, rather than "transforming" a currently drawn card. This card has its own space on the guage, so it can be held while continuing to draw/use regular cards. Oooh, a very nice looking buff to Gravity, which is followed by an attack(maybe also a buff like Assize?) that looks like shooting stars overly a wide range--very pretty. Some kind of shield or delayed heal--looks similar to SCH's Excognition.] -Being changed into a "pure healer," as has been discussed. -Diurnal and Nocturnal Sect are both being removed, and actions that were affected by this will now only have their Diurnal Sect effect. -Neutral Sect (level 80 skill) will have its effect slightly adjusted to add barrier effects to the adjusted skills. -Divination is receiving some adjustments. Now it can be used under "normal circumstances" ??? -I guess its including new enhancements for the user depending on the seals used? Not very clear on these points. -Redraw is no longer a charge action, and can only be used once after using Draw. -Adjustment to Minor Arcana, as I noted above. -New AoE spell that heals allies and damages opponents (the shooting star skill). Largely to balance with WHM having a great aoe in Holy, but making it different enough that the 4 different healers still have individuality.
-Scholar: Trailer: [My main. Adlo either gets buffed or might have a new animation. Looks like they used Sonsolation without transforming the fairy into Seraph. Updated basic attack, Broil III or w/e. Looks like a new aoe heal/shield or update to Succor. Power/animation update to Art of War. ... that's it??] -Oooh, a new ability that increases the party's movement speed--like Pelotan, but keeps its effect during battle. They don't say exactly how much faster compared to Sprint and Pelotan, but says it wont stack with Sprint. Apparently the base action is meant to be a damage reduction buff with the added benefit of speed increase. -SCH was aleady their base for "shield type" healers, so it's largely the same with more focus on the shields and barriers. -Getting a "powerful enhancement" that can be cast on a single party member. -That's it. :(
-Sage: Trailer: [Not sure what to say since this is new. Appears to use a gauge resembling a cross between BRD's and AST. Graphics on attacks look very nice. Cool beam attack! Ooooh, and a gap closer?? Looks like they also have an instant-cast aoe that damages opponents and heals party members.] - "Possesses all the actions essential for a barrier healer." Thanks. -Seems to have increased number of skills that attack and heal/shield allies simultaneously. Seems to work similar to AST's Synnastry--you specify a party member and when you attack, that party member gets passive heals. -Has a DoT that... applies when it feels like? -Adder's Gaul. Some charge in the job guage that powers instant-cast skills. -Also the gap closer. They say it's a very technical job and difficult to explain in just words. -Looks like the Sage's gauge is passively filling constantly, even outside of battle, until it fills 3 charges. -The Synnastry-like skill (Cardia) can target the self as well. Like a constant Regen as long as you're dpsing. Useful for solo-play. -I guess you have the one base attack, but can press a button that augments it into the DoT version. And it seems it can augment other attacks as well--looks like changing one skill from a base healing move to a shielding move or adjusting how aoe heals or attacks appear. -Looks like it's a decent amount to memorize and use, but no more than some other jobs, and it looks pretty fun in that technical aspect! -Lots of comparisons to Gundam from the chat regarding the sfx, lol
Huh, nothing about BLU. Weird.
-YoshiP about choking seeing how long it took them to get through the first part lmao
--break time--
-Reiterates/clarifies that Summoners will retain their egi glamors.
Battle Adjustments: -Raid Finder for Savage duties will specifically search for one pure healer and one barrier healer each. -Normal Duty Finder will remain the same, regarding healers (just one healer queue).
-In the Party Finder, people making parties can specify pure/barrier healers for the party they're making. -Addition to Party Finder to filter for players that have "yet to receive weekly completion rewards." -Searching for parties will now exclude parties you cannot join due to their "one player per job" requirement. Based on YoshiP's experience playing lol
-"Trials with weapon drops will now drop a weapon coffer in addition to the original weapon reward." Folks will still get a direct drop of the weapon, but also there will be a coffer for folks to vote on loot for weapons. -Final parts of hard raids up to 3.5 (Bahamut normal and Savage and Alexander Savage) will drop a weapon-specific coffer in addition to its original loot -High-end raids through SB will drop gear coffers as well in the same way Eden Savage does.
-"Conditional enhancements" can be separated in their own category on the HUD. Proc-type buffs (firestarter, straight shot, etc.) These elements can also have their sizes changed individually if you want them to be more noticeable.
-Improvements to "ground target functionality." -Includes an option to prevent the target from moving beyond it's placable range. We play with controllers, so idk how much this applies.
-New HUD element in the party list that shows which letter target (or # ally) the party members are targeting when they cast spells/abilities. -They specify its main uses are to see which target in a group the party is targeting easier or; -even better; can show which party member a healer is currently hard-casting Raise/Resurrection/Etc on so the other healer can know they're being raised and target another party member or w/e. -Doesn't work for instant spells/abilities because the element wouldn't have enough time to show up, lol
-players with 0% HP will have an empty health bar above them, which originally only showed if someone had the "always show health bar" UI setting, rather than "only when HP is below 100%"
-Unreal trials going away for a bit. Oh no, I'm very concern... -Just because of the raised level cap and the job adjustments, before they tweak the unreal trials to fit the new changes. -Planned to return in 6.1 -No comment on the rewards only available from doing this.
-Belts gone. Can't wear 'em. Can't get 'em. No new notes on this. -The Very Special Belt you can get in Eureka: Pagos for a speed boost will be replaced with a ring and can be exchanged for the belt. -After 6.0 releases, you can no longer extract materia from spriritbound belts; buy or sell belts; use belts for leves or supply missions or use coffers that contain only belts (from quest rewards). -But you can still RETRIEVE fused materia in belts. Belts can still be sold to npc vendors, be desnythesized, used for expert deliveries or be... thrown away. -PANTS FRALL DOWN NOW -More Downscaling of values. I don't really care about this.
-HQ Item Removal??? -"Prevents the unintended procurement of HQ items via gathering and other activities, reducing overall inventory bloat." -Gathered items, enemy drops, Tokens and Non-craftable materials "obtained from certain content" will no longer come as HQ. -Pre 6.0 HQ items will stay HQ, but they will no longer provide bonuses when crafting. -Crafted items (including crafted items only used for crafting, like flour or ingots) and Gear will still be available as HQ. These HQ items will remain functionally unchanged. -Gatherer skills that used to increase HQ will now be adjusted, mostly to affect item yield instead. Fishers will be adjusted as well. The catch's size will still be taken in consideration. -And, of course, Quests, challenge log entries and achievements that require HQ items will be changed accordingly -More details in next Live Letter
-Aethernet Updates: :o -Adjustments to teleportation fees. -No more upper limit to teleportation fees. :) pain -Teleporting across the world will be over 1200 gil, but teleporting to Norvrandt, the fees will be cheaper -Fees to nordvrant are considered via map distance between mor dhona and the crystarium -Other fees have been reduced, so closer teleports will be much cheaper. -In game economy. [ancientaliensmeme.jpg] -Updates to the Aethernet UI, sure. Will include a more detailed list and a map to help with navigation. -Progress towards Fisher's Intuition will remain even after logging out. Fair. Weird time to log out, but things happen.
-Data Center travel system scheduled to come after 6.0 but before 6.1.

PhuTian enemies to lovers AU part 2: The Wound
holy crap somehow i knocked out 3k words, this is extremely angsty and definitely OOC and hellla self-indulgent so proceed with caution hahaha
warning for spoilers, and mentions of wounds and blood but nothing too graphic
Once my AO3 acc gets created, I''ll post there too but till then its on here as well sdogbsdigbosid
note: in this AU, Tian did not own the car, and it wasn't his friend that killed Torfun. She died of a random car accident. And also, Tian knows of his father's involvement. Here, they had to strike a bargain such that Tian would only be allowed to leave if his father had eyes watching out for him there. Phupha is ordered to keep a close eye on Tian, but he only knows that Tian's health isn't that great. He thinks that the main reason that he has to escort Tian around is because Tian is rich and privileged. At this point, he only knows very vaguely about Tian's health problems so he doesn't take them seriously. Also warning Phupha is definitely acting like an ass, but he will redeem himself in later chapters
The next morning, Tian got up and stretched, sighing because of the ache of his back from the hard mattress. The hard mattress and the tiny teacher's house didn't bother him as much as the memories from last night. It wasn't that Tian was in love with the obstinate, cold chief by any stretch, but when he first arrived, he was so impressed with the chief, his dedication, his skill, and most of all, how much he truly cared for Pa Phun Dao and its people. He wanted to make a good impression on the Chief, but even with Tian trying his best, it wasn't possible. And it hurt just a bit more because the Chief was handsome, one of most handsome men that Tian had ever seen in his entire life.
Well, it's a good thing I'm not here to fall in love, Tian mused as he picked up his brush and toothpaste. For a second, he took a deep breath and stared at Torfun's old name tag, which flooded him both with guilt and strength. I'm here for you, Torfun. I need to go on. I need to finish what you have started. Although, I really don't know what you see in Phupha.
Tian went outside and brushed his teeth, and then went back in and changed his clothes to a fresh pair. There was a knock at the door. Tian quickly answered it, opening the bamboo door wide.
To his absolute and utter shock, it was Phupha, glowering like a raincloud, standing up straight in his forest ranger uniform, looking a bit like a Greek--er, Thai God in the morning sunlight.
"Chief, why are you here?" Tian asked, surprised, just managing to conceal the frown off of his face.
"I have to walk you down to the school. It's special orders, that's why a rich kid like you gets a chief to walk him down the fifteen minute walk," Phupha responded curtly.
Tian winced. He knew that his father was using his influence to make sure that Tian, with his fragile health, was protected in this physically taxing environment. It was the most he could do just to convince his father not to have another, more medically advanced teacher's house built for Tian to stay in.
"Okay," Tian responded quietly. "Let's get started then, the sooner that we leave, the sooner you can be finished of this chore with my subpar company."
Tian was hoping for a flicker of pity, something, from the ranger's eyes, but all he got was a steady glare of stone, and then Phupha started walking.
"Hey, slow down!" Tian said. "I can't keep up!"
Phupha rolled his eyes, and slowed down a little, but not enough.
Tian tried to make small talk throughout the walk, but Phupha never responded well, more than a few short words. He clearly did not want to continue the conversation. It didn't stop Tian from doing his best through the conversation, but Phupha was a wall that did not move an inch.
Phupha left Tian with the much friendlier Yod and went on to continue his duties with a nod towards Yod and nothing towards Tian.
Yod winced. "He's really not a bad guy. He'll take some time to warm up, but he has a good heart. In the meantime, Rang and I are here to support you! And Dr. Nam, he is a good guy as well." "Thank you so much sir," Tian said gratefully, his eyes full of warmth. Yod's heart softened for the young volunteer. He was a little privileged, sure, but it was clear that he was a good person. He made a note to speak to Phupha about going a little easier on this young man. It was already difficult for Pa Phun Dao to receive volunteer teachers, and no one should ever look a gift horse in the mouth.
Tian introduced himself to the kids in the school house, the boisterous boy Ayi, the curious Khaoneung, the quiet Inta, the inquisitive Meejoo and the sleepy looking Kalae.
"Your name is Tian? Like Seetian!" Meejoo exclaimed, grinning.
"Not quite--" Tian started, but was interrupted by Ayi saying "What are we going to do today Seetian?"
"Today...." Tian said, thinking for a while. "We are going to go on a field trip!"
"I don't know if it's a good idea," Yod said hesitantly.
Tian wanted to prove himself, he wanted to show the world (and himself) that he really could be a teacher who helped his students, even if he was just doing this for Torfun.
"Us teachers--we are showing our students how to understand the world, right? What is a better way than to immerse the students in it?"
"Alright, if you say so...I'll come with," Yod said. "Stick with me at all times!"
Tian flashed Yod an excited grin. "Thank you so much, sir! Come on, guys!"
The kids were bursting with excitement, just like Tian and Tul back in secondary school, the morning right before the field trip to the aquarium or science museum. Tian smiled. Some things are just universal.
The group set out together, and Tian pointed out the different colors of all of the items around them, teaching them how to say each one in English. Meejoo especially was drinking in the knowledge, her eyes bright.
They were walking across the bridge to go to the waterfall. Yod suddenly got a call on his walkie talkie that something urgent came up. Tian convinced Yod to let him take the kids, promising that they were safe in his care. Yod didn't look like he wanted to agree, but he nodded anyway and sprinted off.
Tian and the kids finally got to the waterfall, and they had fun splashing around and swimming. Tian taught them the names of all of all of the items in English, and taught them about the scientific properties of water. They were drying off and getting ready to walk back. Suddenly, Inta asked, "Where's Kalae?"
Tian looked around the shore but couldn't find him. Heart racing in alarm, he swept the water with his gaze and saw Kalae sitting on the ground in an outcrop of rocks in the water, clearly in pain and very scared.
"KALAE!" Tian shouted in alarm, and ran through the water, swimming through when it got deeper. He got to Kalae, thankfully, and clambered onto the rocks, lifting him up, and carrying him back through the water. When he got onto the rocks, he stumbled and skinned his knee, but he didn't care about that at all. All he cared about was getting Kalae to safety.
"AYI! GO GET HELP!" Tian yelled. "GET THE DOCTOR!" Ayi was the oldest, so he'd have the best chance of success. He nodded and sprinted off. Tian laid Kalae across the grass once they got back to the shore. Kalae had a bad injury on his shin, the skin split open with blood streaming down his leg. Not only was he wincing from pain, he also looked terrified at the amount of blood flowing from the wound.
Tian forced himself to stay calm. "Kalae, look at me. I want you to answer these math problems while we wait for help. What's 7 plus 5?"
Kalae struggled to even formulate the thought, but he eventually answered, "twelve..."
"Good job Kalae, good job, now--don't look down!-- tell me what's 13 plus 5?"
"Seetian, I don't feel good, it hurts, it hurts..." Kalae cried, his chubby cheeks wet with tears.
"I know, Kalae, and I am so sorry. For now, focus on me. Tell me what 13 plus 5 is."
"eight....teen..." Kalae said.
"Hey, Kalae, I'm here now, you'll be okay," a smooth, assured voice sounded from next to Tian. He turned and saw a man in a white coat with an honest looking face.
"I'm Dr. Nam," He said quickly as an aside to Tian. "You can step back now. I can take care of this."
Dr. Nam cleaned the wound, holding Kalae's hand through the sting of the antiseptic, and then securely wrapped a bandage around it. Kalae was then helped onto a stretcher, and Yod, who was manning the ambulance, drove him to the clinic with Dr. Nam right next to him.
Tian was, firstly, relieved that Kalae was going to be okay. But then, guilt and self-loathing hit him out of nowhere. All he could do was stand there, stare at the waterfall, his heart turning and turning inside him, making him feel nauseous with guilt. The wound on his knee from the rock hurt and stung, but he wasn't even focusing on that. Kalae got hurt way worse, and could have died because Tian didn't have an eye on him.
Phupha walked up to Tian, storms brewing in his eyes. Tian internally prepared himself for whatever hurtful thing Phupha was going to say. Even more, Tian didn't mind that Phupha was going to scold him, because he deserved it. His first day, and it was such a disaster. It honestly couldn't have gone worse.
"You should go back," Phupha said shortly. "Back to Bangkok. At least there, you will not hurt anyone else." After saying this, he didn't even look for Tian's reaction, just walked away.
Without even being conscious of it, Tian's eyes started to tear up. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he stood there, barely able to blink.
"Chief, that's too far," one of the other rangers called out, walking closer to Tian. "Hi, Tian, I'm Rang," he said in an even-toned, kindly voice. "I'm one of the other forest rangers stationed at Pa Phun Dao along with Chief, Yod and Dr. Nam who acts as the medic. It's true that you probably should have looked out better for the kids, but this was an accident that could happen to anyone. Please remember that. It could have happened to anyone. Even the chief."
"Thank you, sir," Tian responded mechanically, mustering up as genuine of a small smile he could for Rang.
Later that night, Tian was lying on his hard mattress again, still in the same drenched clothes earlier from that day, his knee throbbing. He couldn't stop thinking about his mistake, that resulted in Kalae getting hurt. He didn't even want to start to think about how everyone in the village would see him, with distrust, and the rangers just with a cold pity.
There was a knock on the door, suddenly jolting Tian from his thoughts. He slowly walked to the door, putting weight on his right food because his left leg was hurt, and opened it. Tian saw who was on the other side and groaned internally. He wasn't equipped to deal with anymore cruel words that day, even if he deserved them.
Phupha's eyes narrowed in distaste. Tian just stayed quiet.
"Meejoo told me that you got hurt. Why didn't you say anything?" Phupha said, surprising Tian. That was not what he was expecting.
Tian kept silent for a second as he tried to figure out what to respond. He wanted to say "because I didn't think you care," but he decided to be more mature and not cause more problems. "I didn't think it mattered, Chief," he responded, voice devoid of emotion.
"If the wound gets infected, my supervisor, who reports to your father, will kill me for messing with the son of an important government official." Phupha responded after a couple seconds of silence.
Tian winced internally. Somehow, without realizing it, he had hoped--a little, just for some kindness. He should have realized that it wouldn't come, not from him.
"Show me the wound," Phupha said. "I've brought antiseptic and bandages. I'll dress it."
Tian moved forward to try to roll his pant leg up, but suddenly the wound sang with pain and Tian tipped forward, right over the steps. He thought he would fall on the ground, but thankfully he was caught. Not so thankfully, it was by Phupha. For a short second, Tian's hazy brain forgot who it was that caught him. He felt so safe and secure in the strong embrace, his face cradled tight against Phupha's chest. But he realized that it was Phupha's chest, and he scrambled back instantly. Phupha's arms shot out to catch him, and Tian looked up into eyes that were flatly annoyed. "Relax. If you fall over again, that will just cause more wounds and more problems." Phupha guided Tian by the shoulders outside to the bench right under one of the orange lantern. His movements, although precise, clinical and clearly trying not to touch Tian more than he had to, were not rough.
The Chief reached over and rolled up Tian's left pant leg.
"How did you know the wound was there?" Tian asked, thunderstruck.
"That was the leg that buckled first," Phupha responded shortly, continuing to roll up the pant leg until he got to the wound. He took a quick breath in.
"Tian, this wound is pretty big. You need to be transparent about when you get hurt."
On a day when Tian was more well-rested and less emotionally wrecked, or a day where Phupha hadn't said cruel words beforehand, Tian would have been able to interpret that statement for what it was, a clinical concern. But to his exhausted brain, Phupha was somehow saying that not only was Tian selfish, he was also someone who was trying to cause problems by hiding things.
"Don't worry, Chief, if the wound gets infected I won't tell anyone, and definitely not my dad. That way, you won't have anything to worry about," Tian said back, his voice completely devoid of emotion.
Phupha looked up at Tian for a split second, and there was a flash--a milisecond flash-- of regret in his eyes.
"It's not just that, Tian. You're the teacher of this village. Your health is important," Phupha said, trying now, for some reason, Tian didn't know why, to sound more diplomatic.
"If it were up to you, I wouldn't be the teacher of the village starting tomorrow. But I'm not going to go back. I made a horrible mistake that resulted in one of the kids getting hurt badly. Tomorrow I will go and apologize to Kalae and his parents. But I am not going back. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I can't, I can't go back, I can't--" What started out as a measured and rational sentence was slowly unravelling into panic.
"Tian," Phupha said sternly. But Tian wasn't even listening. He was thinking about Torfun. He didn't deserve this heart of hers. She did. Not him. But he has ended up with it. That's why he needs to stay, that's why he needs to dedicate his life to Torfun, so he can do a pale imitation of whatever greatness she would have accomplished. Torfun would not have let a child get hurt. Tears started to stream down his face again.
"Tian!" Phupha said, louder this time. Tian snapped his head back down to Phupha, startled by the loud noise.
"Tian, I shouldn't have told you to go back. I apologize," Phupha said tersely, looking into Tian's wide, shocked, tear-filled eyes, and then studiously continuing to dab antiseptic onto Tian's leg. "I shouldn't have said that, alright? I'm sorry. So stop panicking. No one is going to make you go back." Phupha looked right into Tian's eyes, holding his gaze.
Tian just nodded, wiping his face with his sleeve and sniffling.
Phupha wrapped the bandage slowly and carefully around Tian's knee.
"Can you stand?" Phupha asked quietly. Tian nodded, and slowly got up. Phupha stood stock-still for a moment, and then moved slowly to help Tian. But Tian didn't want to lean against him. Tian just wanted to go to sleep. Tian wanted to be born with a healthy heart. Tian wanted to be someone else: someone strong, someone capable, who didn't let kids get hurt. Someone with a shine so golden it could compare to Torfun's. Someone so bright that Phupha wouldn't hesitate to treat them tenderly.
So Tian moved away from Phupha, the movement sudden and jarring. Phupha saw that, and then his eyes, so strangely open in the lamplight, closed up again and became the pools of black stone that they usually were. Tian moved back towards the house, his movements jerky, and he brushed past Phupha, his arm touching--for a milisecond--Phupha's arm. And that was all that was needed. For suddenly, Tian was catapulted into a memory again. Here, Memory-Phupha was the one who was crying. He was crying silently, his eyes closed shut, and Tian could feel his memory self wrapping his arms around Memory Phupha, and stroking his head softly. "It's okay, it's okay, mountain of mine, you're here with me now, I forgive you, it's alright, you're the only one for me, don't you know that, the apple of my eye? " And then memory Phupha didn't say anything at all, but cradled memory Tian to his chest. Memory Tian melted into the warmth. Memory Phupha used his hands to move Memory Tian half a foot away, scrutinizing his face, and then he tenderly wiped the tears from Memory Tian's face, that Tian hadn't even realized were falling while he was giving Memory Phupha that reassuring smile. And then memory Phupha kissed above the high points of memory Tian's cheekbones, right where the tears were falling previously, quickly in succession, but so, so tenderly. Tian sighed in relief, and the memory suddenly faded.
Phupha had the strangest look on his face. There was still refusal and anger, which hurt Tian's heart, but something else that frankly, Tian was too exhausted to figure out.
"Thank you for dressing my wound, Chief. Goodnight," Tian said politely but emotionlessly, struggling to get up the steps, but ultimately succeeding. Without turning around, he opened his door, closed it behind him, fell on top of his mattress, and instantly went to sleep.

Ok I’m going to send the request. I understand if you don’t want to/can’t do it. I’ve heard a lot of people say Roger looks and sounds like an angel, but I’ve never heard them go beyond that. So do you guys think you could do a fic with Roger as an angel?
Summary: As the request says, what if Roger not only sounds like an angel, but he is, in fact, an angel?
Pairing: Roger x reader
Word count: 1.7k+
Warnings: this is mainly FLUFF, but there’s a tiny bit of ANGST if you squint enough, nothing too strong and it has a happy ending, I swear; mention of sexual intercourse, but once again, nothing graphic; some kisses and touching
Written by: @sweetgcreature
A/N: thank you so much @rogahs-drowse for sending such an amazing prompt!❤😇 Sorry if it took soooo long, but I wanted it to be perfect! And I really hope you’re going to love it as much as I loved working on it!
To everyone else, enjoy! Love you, folks 🖤💫
A growing glare flashes against your closed eyelids. You curve your lips in a small smile and extend a lazy arm to hug him.
You are already anticipating the feeling of the autumnal sun on your body when the roar of a distant thunder fills the air.
Furrowing your eyebrows together, you open a curious and confused eye. And, that’s the moment you see it.
The pouring rain is tapping against the window; the sky is grey, bog clouds are encaging the sun and its rays.
The light that was so sweetly caressing your eyes comes from him.
A bright, yellowish aura glows right behind his head making his already blond hair looks like golden strands. You want to touch them, to lock your fingers inside them, to intertwine your digits there forever. However, you resist to that impulsive temptation, to look at him one minute more.
His lips are parted while whispered breaths escape his mouth, slightly curved to form a small, fulfilled smile.
You smile too, mirroring his satisfied expression.
Another thunder explodes in the sky, causing him to curl his nose and inhale deeply as he rolls on his tummy rotating his face in the opposite direction exposing his back and nape to your adoring eyes.
His circular halo fades a bit before starting to shine again, now completely visible.
You slowly slither closer to his body, propping yourself on one elbow to lay your face on the palm of your right hand.
The skin of his shoulders is pale, almost lucent; every relaxed muscle reminds you of those Greek statues people go photograph in museums or admire on the pages of Art’s books.
Your eyes trace every curve of his back with their gaze until they fall on the two, tiny red lines just above his shoulder blades. A trembling finger reaches and gently caresses them.
He breathes heavily and the circle of light around his head intensely shines, before he stretches his neck and he finally turns around to look at you.
You fondly smile down at him while a hint of red blooms on your cheeks.
“’morning,” he mumbles pushing his face on the pillow while he yawns. You giggle and look at his long lashes, his big blue eyes, and his little rounded nose.
Every detail of his face seems perfectly carved from the hands of the most expert of the artists. And, well, in a sense it is.
He catches you staring. He laughs. A melodious chuckle.
“Who are you?” you ask all blushed and shy when his hand stretches towards your face to trace shapes on your cheek and near the corner of your lips.
The halo is back, its light shines more than the thunderbolt that has just whitened every wall of the room. Another rumble follows.
“’m Roger” he replies in the most innocent tone possible. You roll your eyes playfully and fall on the mattress keeping your gaze focused on the ceiling.
“That’s not what I meant, you know it” your voice comes out low, cracked by the tiniest hint of sadness in it. Roger moves the sheets that are encircling the lower part of his body to slide closer.
You do not dare look at his face, but the corner of your eyes catches the light that comes from him.
“It’s complicated, right?” you whisper turning your head just enough to meet his eyes. The blue in his irises changes: from crystalline, it becomes darker, as a sea ready to welcome a summer storm.
“It’s complicated” Roger echoes you, pushing a strand of your hair behind your ear. You nod to yourself and sadly smile at him.
You can see his halo fading away as he adjusts himself by your side to pull you closer to his chest; you lay your head on his shoulder and let your hand lazily draw circles on his torso.
His hand is intertwined in your hair, and all around you a dull calm is hugging you tightly, in contrast with the pouring rain that falls outside and wets the window’s glass.
You know what is going to happen. You know you have to say goodbye.
“’ll miss you,” you admit, mumbling against the warm skin of his arm. Roger furrows his eyebrows and turns his head to catch at least a little portion of your face.
“What do you mean?” he asks, while his thumb plays with your earlobe causing heavenly shivers to trespass your spine. You sigh a half laugh and look at him.
“You do know what I mean – a shadow of guiltiness drops on his face, so you extend your arm to sweetly palm his cheek – that’s okay, Rog. You made me live the best night of my life, no regrets. About nothing. I’ll never forget you”
You slowly push him down until your lips glue together into a passionate kiss. Roger hums and cups your face to deepen the kiss.
He starts to feel a familiar tingling coming from his back and your fingers have just the time to touch the free skin of his shoulders because in a second a pair of candid wings spread open.
You widen your eyes and with a childish, admiring expression, you start to caress the white feathers that are covering both of you as a shield.
Roger smiles widely and kisses your forehead while the halo around his head begins to shine, as it has never done.
When your eyes meet his, you notice a thin layer of tears that are pooling inside his blue irises; a strange sense of preoccupation fills your heart, and you cannot help but stroke his sad face.
“What?” you ask softly, almost under your breath.
“No regrets” he echoes your words and you nod silently, while the tip of his right-wing tickles your shoulder.
“That’s what I said”
“And I agree. Deeply and truly – Roger adds, depositing a light kiss on your lips again – but I'm sorry”
He abandons his forehead against yours and in a moment, he feels tiny.
Ironically, he feels the vulnerable one. The one who needs protection. Therefore, you encircle his waists with your arms, to cradle him. To reassure him. To have him closer to your body.
He stretches his arms to sustain his weight and look into your eyes. He is crying glistening tears, which simultaneously reminds you of raindrops, snowflakes and little diamonds.
“For what?” you feebly question, already quivering of concern for the answer.
His blond hair has become a single whole with his aura, forming a single golden flare that crowns his head. His blue eyes are simply ethereal, while his wings fully open above your head.
Roger gives you a sad smile, caresses your cheek and kisses your lips one more time, before finding the courage inside his immortal heart to say:
“Because you’ll forget about me”
A white veil falls in front of your eyes. Celestial harmonies fill your ears. Then, nothing.
Black. Darkness.
You wake up in your bed. Alone. Confused.
You rub your eyes when a roaring thunder startles you. The intense, infinite grey sky that is visible from your open-curtains window is blinding your sight and you have to cover your face with your hand.
A terrible headache spreads from your temples and tangled memories of the previous night crowd your mind. You even start to wonder how you have reached your bed and your apartment safely.
You sit on the mattress and pass a hand through your hair, feeling your head spinning like a top.
Suddenly, the corner of your eye sees something: a white, little thing laid on the pillow on the other side of the bed.
You take it between your index finger and your thumb, studying it, making it spinning among your fingers.
The doorbell rings unexpectedly and you flinch on the bed, immediately jumping on your feet to approach the apartment door.
You put yourself on your tiptoes to see through the peephole and smile when you notice the figure of your best friend tapping her foot on the ground, waiting for you to welcome her inside.
“Finally! – she sighs when you open the door for her – what are you still doing in your pajama?! It’s almost three in the afternoon and we have to go!” she exclaims, indicating your once again confused figure.
I never sleep this much. What has happened yesterday night?
You ask yourself.
“We have to go … where?”
You ask your friend.
Her chin touches the floor and she raises an eyebrow, visibly incredulous by your question.
“Are you joking? There is the concert tonight! The Queen’s concert, for God’s sake! We’ve been waiting for this night for months, how could you forget about it?”
A strange warmth showers your body and you cannot actually tell the reason why. Only a pair of twisted flashes from a distant night fill your head for the fraction of a second.
Your friend inclines her head in curiosity and points at your left hand, laying still by your side.
“What’s that? And why are you so lost, ‘re you alright?”
You look down, between your fingers. The white thing you have collected from the bed a moment before is still there.
A white feather.
You look at it. You spin it. And you smile.
A reborn consciousness hits you like an ocean’s wave.
“It’s nothing – you answer to your friend, who is evidently confused – I just had a dream, last night. A beautiful dream” you add, more to yourself than to her.
“Okay – she shrugs and scrolls her head – but now go! Move! Get ready!” and, saying that, she pushes you towards your bedroom as you both start laughing loudly.
“I can’t wait to see them playing! We must be front row! –
She starts and, as you get dressed, begins to fantasize about the concert.
- I have to touch Freddie’s hands! And John and Brian must notice me! Not to mention Roger! He is so handsome”
She sighs and you cannot help but curve your lips in a wide smile when she mentions his name.
“He so good at singing as well! And, believe or not, people who went to their concerts told me that live he even sounds better! He sings like an angel!”
An angel.
Those two words echo in your ears and your heart jumps a little in your chest. You softly caress the feather you have laid on your nightstand, before turning around to look at your friend.
You smile at her and, adjusting your bag on your shoulder ready to go, you friendly pat on her arm and say:
“Trust me, I believe you”

Vendetta (1/3) - Stenbrough
Summary: All Bill really wants is a shoulder to cry on. All he really wants is for someone to tell him it’s going to be alright. Robert has never let him down in that regard.
-
Bill hasn't been the same since his brother's disappearance, and the only man that seems to understand him is Robert "Bob" Gray. It doesn't matter that he's three times his age, Bill craves that understanding. He craves for someone to look him in the eye and tell him that everything's going to be okay. Unfortunately, there's always a price to pay, and Georgie was only the beginning.
TW: Violence, Manipulation, Non-Con, Kidnapping
Notes: This is a lot darker than my other fics, and, basically, I am so sorry. The non-con stuff isn’t super graphic, but it is there so please be careful.
There are three parts to this fic. I promise I will post them all, but updates will be slow. All the chapters are really long and I’m busy with a lot of other things, so it takes me awhile to finish.
Also while this is technically a Stenbrough fanfic, their relationship isn’t the main focus of the fic. It carries a lot of the plot but, overall, the fic is about Bill’s journey.
Read on AO3
Part One:
The Disappearance Of Georgie Denbrough:
Georgie Denbrough has been missing for half a year when Robert Gray shows up. He just waltzes into Bill’s life, with a charming smile and sympathetic eyes that tell stories Bill can’t quite understand yet. If Bill stares into them long enough, he thinks he can start to see pieces of some of those stories. And they chill him to the bone.
He doesn’t know why. He doesn’t know what exactly the stories are (and a part of him doesn’t know if he will ever want to), but Bill doesn’t need to know to feel the chill that runs down his back.
Robert Gray’s eyes are haunting.
And yet the rest of him is friendly enough, so Bill tries to not let himself worry over his eyes too much. Instead he focuses on the warmth of Robert’s hand on his shoulder, on the way he smiles so wide it nearly splits his face in half, on the kind words he utters when Bill comes to him sobbing at odd hours of the day.
His friends don’t see it that way.
They see Robert and they see, to put it plainly, a creep who jumped at the opportunity to spend time with a bunch of fifteen year olds. And they have no qualms about letting Bill know about their true feelings.
“You’re gonna get fucking murdered, Bill,” Eddie had said a few days after Robert’s first appearance. “You’re gonna get kidnapped and raped and then you’re gonna get murdered, is that what you want? They’re gonna find your body in the basement of some creepy old house or, or, or deep in the woods or, like, in his bedroom. And your skin’s gonna be all gross and decaying. Or, fuck, what if he’s like some crazy cannibal? They’re gonna find you with chunks of flesh missing and an eyeball in a martini glass and he’ll be making some kind of crazy, fucked up, dinner using your insides - Fuck, Bill! Is that what you want?”
Bill thinks Eddie has quite the imagination.
All Bill really wants is a shoulder to cry on. All he really wants is for someone to tell him it’s going to be alright. Robert has never let him down in that regard.
“He’s a guh-good guy,” Bill had told Eddie. “You jj-juh-just have to give him a chance.”
Eddie had merely scoffed and told Bill he would never, ever let Robert Gray get close enough to do that.
Bill thinks that’s a tad bit unfair, but Eddie refuses to budge.
Sometimes, when Bill looks into Robert’s eyes, he can see why. But those moments are fleeting. They’re only a few seconds of gut twisting, vomit inducing anxiety before he remembers who he’s talking to and he’s overrun with unshakeable guilt.
In the weeks since, his friends still haven’t come around. But they will eventually, Bill’s sure of it.
As of currently, they’re crowded into the clubhouse. Richie and Eddie are curled up together in the hammock, lost in their own little world. Bev is smoking by the open trapdoor. Ben and Mike have combined efforts to put various posters and photos on the walls. And Bill is sitting in the far corner, softly murmuring his latest story and trying very hard not to think about the fact that Stan is sitting so close he might as well be on his lap.
Stan doesn’t say a word throughout the story. Instead he listens attentively, like Bill’s thoughts are worth paying attention to. It makes Bill’s heart melt just a little bit.
When he finishes, he puts the notebook down gently, and turns to stare curiously at Stan. “So?”
“I didn’t like the ending,” is all Stan says.
“That’s ww-wh-what you said about my last one!” Bill exclaims.
“It’s too sad,” Stan says. “Sean never gets to go back home. All his friends and family are looking for him, and he’s stuck trapped in his own head forever.”
“Robert luh-luh-liked it.”
Stan scoffs loudly. “Do I look like Robert to you?”
This, admittedly, does earn a chuckle from Bill.
“Just because it’s ss-suh-sad doesn’t mean that it’s not good.”
“But Sean deserves to be happy, don’t you think?”
Bill considers this for a moment. Then, “Nope!” he says, popping the P.
“Why not?” Stan asks, lurching backwards to stare at him incredulously.
“Because I mmm-muh-made him,” Bill says. “And, therefore, I can dd-do whatever I want with him.”
Stan hums softly because, technically, this is true, but, “Why don’t you use your power for good?”
There’s a beat of silence.
“That rr-ruh-rarely happens in real life,” Bill murmurs.
It’s so much sadder than their previous conversation, and much more serious. Bill almost feels bad saying it. But it’s true. People are rarely happy in real life, and if there is someone in the sky looking out for them, they sure as hell aren’t changing their ending to please their friend. Even if said friend is cute as a button.
“I guess so,” whispers Stan. “But don’t you wish it did?”
“Yeah.” Bill does. All the time. “Sometimes.”
Stan shuffles closer, tucking his head between Bill’s shoulder and neck. Bill tries to ignore the heat that sprouts there, spilling through his veins and out to the rest of his body, making him tingly all over. But he can’t. As soon as it gets his attention, he’s gone. The clubhouse disappears, replaced by Stan and the warmth that fills his veins.
“I think you’re gonna be alright,” Stan says. “Whoever’s writing your ending is looking out for you.”
Bill fiddles nervously with the corner of his notebook. “Robert thinks we mmm-muh-might still be able to find jj-juh-juh-Georgie.”
“I...Yeah. Maybe.”
Stan looks so defeated. Like he knows Bill won’t listen to whatever he has to say. Which, in all honesty, he probably wouldn’t. But that doesn’t make Bill feel any less guilty.
“Are you still looking for him?” Stan asks. But he knows the answer.
“Yeah,” Bill says. “Robert usually huh-helps me.”
“That’s nice of him.”
“Mhm. We’re supposed to go ll-luh-look down by the barrens later today.”
“Oh.”
Bill can feel Stan stiffen beside him. He’s got his legs pulled up to his chest, arms wrapped securely around his knees, and Bill’s sure that, if he were wearing shorts, his fingernails would be digging into his skin, judging by how tightly he’s gripping his knees.
“Robert?” The intrusion, while Bill loves all his friends, is unwelcomed. These moments with Stan feel intimate. Special. Richie doesn’t get to interrupt just because he overhears something he doesn’t like. “You’re still talking to that freak?” He’s swinging slowly in the hammock, a worn out comic in one hand, Eddie wrapped securely in the other. But he’s not paying attention to either. Instead he’s got his gaze fixed on Bill, his glasses making his infuriated eyes seem 12x bigger.
Bill rolls his eyes. “He’s not that bad, Rich.”
“Not that bad?” Richie says. “Eds, did you hear that? Robert’s not that bad! Not at all! We better shout this from the rooftops. Hey, Losers! Robert’s not that bad!”
“Sh-Sh-Shut up, Richie,” Bill groans.
“We’re just worried,” Bev says. She flicks some of the cigarette ash onto the ground. “You can’t blame us for that.”
It’s true, he can’t, but, “Yuh-You don’t have anything to be worried about.”
Bev hums softly. She clearly doesn’t believe him. It infuriates Bill a little bit, but he wills those emotions away. These are his friends, of course they would be worried.
Stan must sense another quarrell coming on, he’s got a fifth sense for that kind of stuff, because he gently taps Bill’s knee and murmurs, “Write me another story.”
And who is Bill to argue?
-
Bill doesn’t like the barrens. He had been so hopeful when he first started searching here, so sure he would find clues. Subconsciously he had hoped he would find Georgie just sitting there, patiently waiting for his big brother to find him.
But he never did.
And now the barrens represent that failure, that loss. He doesn't know if he’ll ever be able to step foot in them again without remembering the brother who didn’t come home. And yet he’s still down here constantly, still searching for possible clues. He still never finds any.
“This is useless,” Bill hisses. “Hh-huh-he’s not down here. He’s not-” He sniffs harshly. He can already feel the tears stinging at his eyes. “This is sss-stuh-stupid. Dad’s ruh-ruh-right, he’s-” Bill grits his teeth. He can’t afford to think like that. “We need to look somewhere else. If he ww-wuh-was here, he’s not anymore.”
Robert glances at him curiously. “Where do you want to look?”
“I-” Bill doesn’t have an answer. Because he’s looked, quite literally, everywhere. He’s searched every inch of this god forsaken town, then searched it again, and again, and again. There’s nowhere else to look. “Maybe he got ll-luh-lost. In the woods. Maybe we jj-juh-just have to look harder.”
It’s pathetic, really.
On some level, Bill knows Georgie isn’t in the woods. He knows he isn’t anywhere. No seven year old can survive for half a year on their own. And yet he can’t admit it, even to himself.
“We’ve checked the woods, kid,” Robert says with a heavy sigh.
“But - But -” Oh, nononono, Robert’s giving up on him too. The one person who didn’t judge him, and now he thinks he’s gone crazy as well. Not that Bill can really blame him. Sometimes he wonders about his own sanity. “We haven’t looked that dd-deep.” Bill knows he sounds desperate, but he can’t stop it. “Maybe - Maybe we’ll ff-fuh-find something.” Before Robert can respond, because Bill knows that look in his eye, knows he won’t be getting the answer he wants, he hurriedly adds, “I can do something for you.”
That catches Robert’s attention. It always does.
He hesitates, and for a moment Bill worries his answer isn’t going to change. But then he says, “Alright, get in the truck,” and Bill doesn’t think he’s heard a better suggestion in all of his life.
He practically runs to the truck. Not that it matters. He still has to wait for Robert to open it, because he has, like, a million locks on the damned thing.
Robert unlocks it with a chuckle, like Bill’s a child who just asked the sugariest cereal at the grocery store.
“Okay,” Bill says, as soon as they’re both seated. “I think we sh-sh-should check past the town limits. We huh-haven’t looked-”
“Bill.” Robert chuckles again. “Aren’t you forgetting something?”
Bill’s heart sinks to the bottom of his stomach. “Nn-Nuh-Now?”
Robert looks at him pointedly. “There won’t be time afterwards.”
Which, Bill supposes is true. Once he starts looking, he doesn’t stop until he can’t see two feet in front of him. Even then, oftentimes he has to be dragged away.
But he hates this part. It makes him feel weird, like there’s dirt trapped under his skin that he can’t dig out. Being able to wait a few more hours would be nice. Nevertheless, a deal’s a deal.
“Alright,” he murmurs. “Yuh-Yeah, okay. Just-” Maneuvering himself into the right position is, admittedly, harder than it looks. The truck is cramped and by the time Bill manages to find a semi-comfortable position, Robert’s already growing impatient.
Bill’s barely managed to get Robert’s belt open before calloused fingers are grasping at his hair, pushing him down, down, down until air has become a precious resource. Luckily, Bill doesn’t have to do too much work this time. This happens sometimes, if Robert gets too rowdy too fast. He’ll take control of Bill’s actions, ignoring if he gags or if his face turns purple, forcing him to go as fast or as slow as he wants.
As much as Bill hates having to work hard at something that is, admittedly, disgusting - not that he’d ever dare say that to Robert’s face - having Robert control him is always so much worse. Bill’s sure Robert wouldn’t ever hurt him, but it’s clear in moments like these who has the control. If something went wrong, Bill wouldn’t be able to get away. He can’t move an inch.
But he shouldn’t be worrying about that. Because nothing’s going to go wrong. Besides, Robert’s doing so much for him, this is the least he could do.
It seems to take forever before Robert’s finished. But once he is, Bill jumps back, cheeks still puffed wide like a hamster. This is the worst part, he thinks. And the longer he waits, the worse it is, but he can’t get himself to take that last fucking step.
“Good?” Robert purrs. Bill nods, even though he wishes the ground would swallow him whole, because what the fuck else is he supposed to do? “You look so pretty like this.” Bill wants to cry. Which is a stupid fucking reaction. Who cries after - after - after that? “C’mon.” Robert’s got a hand on his cheek, thumb gently brushing the bone. “I know you can do it.” And, God, Bill just wants him to stop talking. So he does it. He swallows as quickly as he can, fighting his instinct to gag it all back up. “Good boy.”
Bill turns quickly, forcing Robert’s hand to slip off his face. “Can ww-wuh-we go nuh-now?” he asks. He stares straight ahead as Robert starts the car. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t mean anything. He’s still fine. He’s still good. He’s still redeemable.
-
The next day, things are not better.
They didn’t find anything relating to Georgie, the Losers still think Robert’s a creep, and, to make it all worse, Bill’s throat feels like it’s on fire.
“You don’t sound too good, Billy,” Eddie says. “You might be getting sick.”
Bill hums softly. “Mm-Maybe-” he winces at how rough his voice sounds. “-Maybe I sh-sh-should go home.”
“Just rest here,” Stan suggests. “You can stay in my bed.”
“I - I don’t wanna get you ss-suh-sick.”
Stan shrugs. “It’s fine, I can change the sheets. I know how to do laundry.” Richie wolf whistles from across the room. “Oh, fuck off!”
“We can make you soup,” Eddie says. He’s already gathering the ingredients, so Bill supposes there’s no point in arguing.
He drags his feet up to Stan’s room, ignoring the growing pit in his stomach. He should just tell them the truth. It’s not that big of a deal, right?
It’s not until he’s curled up in bed that he notices Bev standing in the doorway.
“I know you’re not sick,” she says.
“I am,” Bill insists. “Doctor E-Eddie said suh-so.”
Bev gently shuts the door behind her. “Doctor Eddie’s also never had his throat fucked before.”
Bill winces. “That’s nuh-not what happened.”
“Don’t play dumb with me,” she hisses. “I’m not an idiot. You have to stop doing this.”
“I’m not doing ah-anything wrong!”
“You protected me from my dad, you think I’m not gonna do the same for you?”
“It’s not th-th-the same. Wuh-We’re just friends, Bevvy.”
“He is not your friend, William.” Bev regards him warily. “I won’t tell the others. But I think you should really think about your so-called friendship with Robert.” Bev turns to re-open the door. At the last minute, she turns back to face Bill. “Stan wants to know if you’re staying over. Ya know, parents out of town. Losers sleepover.”
Bill nods. “Pp-Pruh-Probably.”
Bev smiles softly. “Cool. And think about it, Bill. Alright? We really do want to help.”
And then she’s gone, leaving Bill alone with his thoughts.
The worst part of the conversation is that Bill remembers having the same talk with Bev a little less than a year ago. Their places had been reversed then. Bill had dragged her away from the prying eyes of the rest of the Losers and begged and begged until she broke. She told him everything that night. And he held her through all of it, clutching her to his chest as Beverly Marsh, perhaps the strongest of them all, sobbed into his shoulder.
The memory is still raw, and not one he’s willing to share with anyone. She told the rest of the Losers the next day, but that night had been something private. Something that wasn’t meant to be shared.
It had been one of the most terrifying nights of Bill’s life. Second only to realizing Georgie wasn’t coming home.
The thought almost makes him chase after her, almost makes him tell her everything.
Except it’s not the same. Because nothing’s wrong.
Robert’s not his father. Robert’s his friend. He holds him when he cries, and listens to him when he needs to talk about Georgie again and again and again, and takes him wherever he wants to look for his baby brother, even if he knows they won’t find anything.
He’s sure if he explained that, she would understand. He didn’t understand either at first. But, “It’s just like a trade,” Robert had told him. “Remember how I drove you to town limits? I even bought you lunch afterwards. I do so much for you.” Which, admittedly, is true.
It’s not like Robert’s holding him down or ripping his clothes off. Bill goes willingly, even if he cries afterwards sometimes. But Robert says that’s normal.
“Knock, knock.” Stan’s standing in the doorway now, a piping hot bowl of chicken noodle soup in his hands. “Eddie’s insistent that this will cure you.”
“Mmm. Doctor’s oh-orders,” Bill says, making grabby hands at the bowl.
“Doctor’s orders,” Stan repeats, a fond smile on his face.
He closes the door gingerly behind him before crossing to sit on the edge of the bed, soup balanced carefully on his lap.
Bill looks forward to these moments with Stan. These quiet, intimate moments where it feels like anything is possible. It’s these moments that make him think maybe this godforsaken town is wrong, and the way he feels about his friend is okay. It’s these moments that make him think maybe Stan feels it too.
“Are you gg-guh-gonna spoon feed me soup?” Bill asks as he fumbles to sit upright.
Stan just shrugs. “I mean, you’re sick.”
Bill nods gravely. “Deathly ill.”
That makes Stan crack a smile, but he quickly ducks his head in an attempt to hide it from Bill’s prying eyes. Bill sees it though, and it warms his heart far more than the soup ever could.
“Alright,” Stan murmurs. “Open wide.”
The soup, to put it lightly, is not good.
Out of all the Losers, Mike and Ben are probably the best cooks. But judging by how anal retentive Eddie is, Bill has no doubt that he refused their help. He can practically see him, in his head, shooing away his friends as Ben desperately tries to salt the slowly warming broth.
He doesn’t say a word, but Stan must notice the way Bill’s face contorts as he tries to force the soup down because he murmurs a quiet, “Sorry. Eddie thought adding anything else would take away from its quote unquote healing properties.”
Stan’s always been able to read him like a book. All the Losers are close, but something’s special about his friendship with Stan. Bill’s never had to say a word for him to know exactly what he’s thinking.
“Ff-Fuh-Figures,” Bill says.
“He just worries about you,” Stan says.
“He sh-shouldn’t have to. That’s not his jj-juh-job.”
Stan shrugs. “You would do the same for him.”
Bill doesn’t answer, because he knows it’s true.
-
At around 1 in the morning, Bill decides he can’t stay over any longer.
He’s got the bed to himself, on account of him being “sick,” but the rest of the Losers are spread unceremoniously across the floor. He has to tiptoe over their sleeping bodies, nearly tripping over Mike’s legs, to get to the door. And, of course, Richie and Eddie are cuddled up directly against it. He nudges them away with the top of his foot until there’s enough distance for him to slip out, which he does as quickly as possible.
He grabs the phone in the kitchen, which he’s sure is far enough away that it won’t wake the others, and quickly punches in the numbers swimming through his head.
The phone rings once, twice, three times. Enough that he thinks maybe he won’t pick up. But right as he’s about to hang up, a quiet voice rumbles through his ear, “Hello?”
“Robert!” he chirps.
“Billy? What the hell are you doing up at this hour?”
Bill gnaws nervously on his lower lip. Of course Robert’s asleep, he should’ve remembered that tiny detail.
“Sorry,” he says. “I shouldn’t huh-have woken you.”
“It’s alright, kid,” Robert says. “I’m up now. What do you need?”
“Can you pick me up?” Bill asks, before he can talk himself out of it.
“Sure,” Robert says through a yawn. “You at your house?”
“I’m at mm-muh-my friend’s house,” Bill says. “Hang on, I’ll guh-get you the address.”
Once he’s sure Robert’s going to come, he sets about writing a note for the Losers. He knows there’s pen and paper back in Stan’s room, but it’s too risky going back there, so he settles for digging through the office until he finds what he needs.
He’s halfway through said note when a soft noise startles him. He whips around, half expecting to come face to face with a knife-wielding murderer. But it’s just Stan.
“What are you doing?” he asks.
He’s blinking sleepily, obviously barely staying awake, and his hair is sticking up in all directions. His pajamas are a little too big on him, which is a sudden change from the Stanley that refuses to wear anything unless it fits just right. It’s suddenly too difficult to not imagine Stan in one of Bill’s oversized flannels.
It’s all so overwhelming that Bill nearly forgets to respond.
“What’s that?” Stan asks again, gesturing weakly to the pen in Bill’s hand.
“I - Uh - I’m guh-gonna go,” Bill says. “I just - I dd-duh-didn’t want you to freak out in the morning.”
Stan cocks his head curiously, and it’s so cute that Bill nearly calls Robert to tell him he’s changed his mind. “You’re leaving?”
“Yeah,” Bill murmurs. “I’m ss-sorry. I don’t wanna get you guys sick.”
A more honest man would have told Stan that he’s terrified of facing Bev’s wrath again tomorrow. But Bill never claimed to be an honest man.
“Is your dad picking you up?” Stan asks.
“I - Um - I called Robert.”
That makes Stan pause. “You gave Robert my address?”
“How else is he gonna puh-pick me up?” It’s a lame argument, but it’s all Bill’s got.
Stan seems to be at a loss for words too, mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “But - But - Why - I don’t want-”
“It’s ff-fuh-fine, Stan,” Bill assures him. “He’s not even gonna come inside.”
“I don’t know if that defines fine,” Stan grumbles.
Robert pulls up less than a minute later.
Bill scrambles to give Stan a hug before rushing outside to meet him. The summer air keeps most of the cold at bay, but it’s still fairly chilly, so Bill throws himself into the car as quickly as he can.
“Th-Thanks,” Bill says.
“Don’t mention it,” Robert says. He sounds much more awake now than over the phone. “You alright?”
“Mhm,” Bill says. “Jj-Juh-Just had to get out of there.” It’s then that Bill realizes the street they’re on doesn’t go to his house. “Wh-Where are we going?”
“Back to my place,” Robert says. “Figured we might as well just rest there. That alright?”
Bill figures that sounds reasonable enough. “Yeah. Th-That’s alright.”
In all honesty, it is fine. What’s Bill gonna do at home? Sit and stare at his ceiling all night and then not talk to his parents the next morning because they don’t care what happens to him? Sounds fun, but he’ll have to pass.
Bill’s never been to Robert’s apartment before. It’s smaller than he expected, but nice nonetheless. It has a cute little kitchen, a big, comfy couch directly across from an old TV, and huge, open windows. It’s normal. Almost overwhelmingly normal.
Bill almost wants to call his friends and tell them as much. “He’s not a psychopath,” he would say. “What kind of psychopath lives in a normal apartment?”
Psychopaths live in old, run down, abandoned houses in the middle of nowhere. Friendly people who are absolutely nothing like Beverly’s father live in normal apartments.
“You have a nuh-nice apartment,” Bill says, politely.
Robert chuckles lowly. “Thank you.”
Then a hand is being placed on the small of Bill’s back and he’s being pushed farther and farther into the apartment until he collapses into the big, comfy couch. Robert sits next to him, a single casual hand on his shoulder.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Bill shrugs. “It’s not a bb-big deal. They just...They don’t understand. Ss-Suh-Sometimes it’s hard to be around them.”
It’s not completely true. They’ve lost people before. Eddie lost his father. Mike lost his parents. Stan lost his grandmother just a month or two ago.
But it’s not the same. Because none of them were responsible for that loss.
Robert nods and pulls Bill closer to him, tucking him against his side.
“People who haven’t been through what you have, they’ll never understand,” Robert says. “They don’t know what it’s like to lose someone like that. The bond between siblings is something special, and tearing it apart is one of the most painful things one could do.”
Bill sniffles quietly and shuffles closer to Robert’s side, burying his face in his shoulder. “I muh-muh-miss hh-him.”
“I know,” Robert coos. A gentle hand cards through Bill’s hair. “I know you do.”
“Duh-Does it even get easier?” Bill asks, voice muffled through the fabric of Robert’s T-Shirt.
Robert sighs heavily. “I’m gonna be honest with you kid, not really.” He chuckles softly at the whine Bill lets out. “I know, I know. But you learn to live with it. I miss my brother every day, it’s just a part of my life now.”
Bill twists around to stare up at Robert with wide, starry eyes. “Wh-What was your brother like?”
“Maturin was the sweetest soul I’ve ever known. He always put others before himself, always made sure everyone else was happy. He would give up everything if it just meant I would crack a smile.” He offers Bill perhaps the saddest smile he’s ever seen. “The best of us are truly the ones we lose too soon.”
Bill nods mutely. Georgie was truly the best of the Denbrough family. He was always willing to help out however he could, even as young as he was, and was always happiest whenever everyone else was happy. It almost pains Bill to hear someone else described as the “sweetest soul.”
“I’m - I might guh-go to bed,” Bill mutters. “I’m - I’m pp-pruh-pretty tired.”
“Great idea,” Robert says. As if on cue, he lets out a loud yawn.
“Do you huh-have some blankets I could borrow?”
“Yeah, sure,” Robert says. He makes a show of walking towards the linen cabinet before stopping and turning back towards Bill. “Ya know, why don’t you just sleep in my bed tonight.”
Bev’s words ring out through Bill’s head. He forces himself to keep eye contact. “Why?”
Robert shrugs. “I’m tired, you’re tired, and it’ll take awhile to make up the couch. The bed’s big enough” When Bill still hesitates, he sighs heavily. “Billy, have I ever hurt you before?” Bill shakes his head. “Then what’s the big deal?”
Bill pauses for only a split-second.
“No big deal.”
He follows Robert into the bedroom.
-
The next time Bill sees Stan, it’s just the two of them.
They’re lounging on Bill’s bed, Bill furiously scribbling into a notebook as Stan watches over the top of his book. It’s peaceful, just being with Stan like this. Something as simple as his presence has always done wonders for Bill’s nerves.
“What are you writing?” Stan asks.
“Re-writing th-the ending,” Bill says. His voice is slow and distracted, but Stan doesn’t seem to mind. He puts down his current book and shuffles closer, peering curiously over Bill’s shoulder.
“The one you let me read at the clubhouse?”
“Mhm.”
Stan lets out a little huff. “How are you torturing poor Sean now?”
Bill finally tears his gaze away from the notebook, instead fixing Stan with an affronted stare.
“I’m nuh-not torturing him!” he insists. “I’m trying to write a hh-happier ending.”
Bill doesn’t know why, but it’s embarrassing to admit. He feels like he’s just revealed some deep, dark secret. But Stan’s smiling, grinning almost infectiously wide, so Bill can’t be too hard on himself. He’s always liked making Stan smile.
“Really?”
He sounds so excited. Bill thinks it’s kind of dumb. He’s half tempted to remind him that, hey, Sean isn’t actually real. He’s just a clump of words on a piece of paper. But Stan looks so unbelievably happy, Bill can’t possibly take that away from him.
“Jj-Juh-Just for you,” Bill says.
It makes Stan smile softly, like he can’t really believe it. “For me?” Bill nods. “I wrote it ff-for you, I can’t give it an eh-ending you don’t like.”
Stan scrunches up his nose, a key sign that he’s deep in thought. It’s cute, and it kind of makes Bill want to kiss him.
“I want Sean to kiss Suzie,” he says finally.
Bill groans loudly. “That’s so mm-muh-much extra work! Now I have to ah-add in a whole romance-”
“What about Jacob?” Stan says the words so quickly that Bill’s almost positive he’d imagined them. But Stan is red-faced and rigid, and that’s all it takes for Bill to know that the words he heard were very much real. “Would that - Would that be okay?”
Bill blinks slowly. Would that be okay? He thinks so. But how would he explain that to his mother if, God forbid, she ever stumbled upon this story?
“Bill?” Stan sounds so small, and when Bill snaps out of his thoughts he can see a sense of terror in Stan’s eyes that he’s never seen before.
“Yeah,” Bill murmurs. “Yeah, that’d be okay.”
Stan doesn’t say anything as Bill continues to write, but he watches him like a hawk. It’s like he’s afraid Bill will change his mind the moment he turns his back. Like he’s scared Bill will retaliate, and that it won’t be unlike the insults Bowers and his goons usually throw at him. The fact that Stan even thinks that makes Bill hot with shame.
“Sean’s buh-better with Jacob, anyway,” he says, just to quell Stan’s worries.
Stan still doesn’t answer, but he does shuffle a bit closer.
By the time Bill finishes the story, Stan looks like he’s ready to implode. It’s about five pages longer than it was originally supposed to be, he still needed to add basically a whole other storyline to make the romance work, but Stan still reads it diligently.
“It’s cute,” he says softly, once he’s finished.
“You like it?”
Stan nods. “Better than the old ending.”
That makes Bill beam, because all he ever really wants is Stan’s approval.
“Look,” Stan murmurs, setting the notebook down gently beside him. He handles it with care, like it’s something worth worrying about. “I’m really sorry I made you do that. I didn’t - I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable.”
“I ww-wuh-wasn’t uncomfortable!” Bill insists. “It was a guh-good idea, it was cute! I jj-just didn’t know-”
“I’m gay.” And Bill has so many things to say, so many questions, but Stan barrels on before he can get even one of them out. “You probably figured that out, though. Fuck - I shouldn’t have - I’m sorry. I didn’t mean - I didn't mean to make things weird. Really. Can we just pretend like this never happened? I’m - I’m sorry. You can write the Suzie ending. You can just - just burn that one I guess. Fuck. I’m sorry-”
Bill grabs him by the front of his perfectly ironed polo and pulls him closer, closer, closer until their mouths are clashing together. It’s everything Bill’s been dreaming of. His lips are soft, softer than Bill could have even imagined, and it fills every dark, broken, crevice that haunts Bill’s heart with a warm, sunshiny feeling.
Bill pulls away to find Stan wide-eyed and pink-faced. He desperately wants to know what Stan’s thinking, but he’s shocked into a silence that speaks one too many volumes.
“Ss-Suh-Sorry,” Bill mutters. He forces his hands to unclench from around Stan’s shirt. The material is still wrinkled, but Bill figures that’s the least of their worries at the moment. Because, fuck, Stan didn’t mean him. “I sh-shouldn’t have assumed.”
“I mean,” Stan’s fingers lift up to ghost over his lips, “A little warning would’ve been nice.”
Bill’s heart stutters in his chest. “Wh-What’s that muh-mean?”
Stan shakes his head, like he isn’t really sure himself. “You could’ve asked.”
Bill swallows the lump in his throat. “Can I kiss you?”
Rather than answering, Stan lurches forward and presses their lips together in a bruising kiss. And, fuck, this is even better. Stan’s got one hand in his hair, the other gripping his shoulder like he’s steadying himself. The way his lips move against Bill’s leave him lightheaded, and he has to grip Stan’s hips to remind himself that he isn’t, in fact, dreaming.
“Huh-Holy shit,” he says, the words muffled by Stan’s lips.
“Shut up, shut up,” Stan chants. Bill can feel Stan’s lips fumble against his own as he speaks. It makes him just a little bit crazy.
Bill does, in fact, shut up. He drags his hands up to cup Stan’s face, holding his cheeks like he’s precious cargo. The kiss slows but doesn’t stop, turning into something so sweet it makes Bill’s teeth rot.
He pulls away slowly, because it’s just about the last thing he wants to do, but his lungs are starting to ache. Seeing Stan with puffy lips and glassy eyes is enough to convince Bill to duck back in for one last peck before pulling away for good.
“You’re beautiful,” Bill blurts out.
“Oh.”
“And I think I’m in love with you.”
“Oh!”
“I think I’ve always been in love with you. Ever since we were kids. Ever ss-since you waddled into my life as a cute little preschooler and demanded I use the hand sanitizer before shaking your hand.”
“You were covered in dirt,” Stan says weakly.
Bill laughs. A real laugh, from deep in his stomach. He hasn’t laughed like that in a long time.
He tries to go in for another kiss but Stan stops him, a hand clamped tightly over his mouth.
“Wait, wait,” he says. “I need to tell you something.” Bill hums softly against his palm. Stan’s eyes wander slowly over Bill, taking him all in. He looks flustered, but Bill doesn’t think he’s stalling. Taking a mental picture, more like. Bill understands. If there’s one moment he never wants to forget, it’s this one. Then, “I love you too.”
Bill’s spent his entire life trying to perfect the english language. He’s spent years hunched over a notebook, writing and re-writing and writing and re-writing until he’s gotten it as close to perfect as he possibly could. But nothing he’ll ever write will even get close to the perfect poetry that just flowed from Stan’s lips.
Bill grabs Stan’s hand between his own, leaving millions of tiny kisses along the palm.
“Please luh-let me kiss you again,” Bill practically begs. “Please, pp-please, please.”
Stan grants his wish, leaping forward to press their lips together again.
Distantly, Bill thinks this is better than breathing. If there’s one way he wants to die, it’s suffocating with Stanley Uris’ lips against his.
-
Two days later, no one has seen Stanley in a full 24 hours. A familiar panic has settled in Bill’s stomach. He’s gone through every other possible scenario in his head, gone through every excuse. But on some level he knows, Stan met the same fate as Georgie.
The Losers have spent the whole day wandering around town, hoping against hope they’ll find him somewhere. That it’s all just one, big misunderstanding. Bill keeps half expecting to see him around every corner, waiting for them with an eye roll and a dry joke that lets them know just know silly they were for thinking he had gone missing. He’s never there.
They’re all uncharacteristically quiet that day. Even Richie doesn’t say a word. He just clings to Eddie’s hand and searches with an uncharacteristic amount of diligence.
Bill wants to fucking scream.
He wants to tell Richie it’s okay to talk, it’s okay to joke, it’s okay to be fucking normal. Because nothing’s wrong. Stan’s fine and he’s going to be back any minute.
But, at the end of the day, Bill still finds himself in front of Robert’s door with enough tears to fill the Derry city pool streaming down his face.
“Huh-He’s guh-guh-gone,” Bill sobs.
Robert ushers him inside without another word. He lets Bill bundle up in his bed, pulling the covers up his chin and burying his face in the pillows. Somewhere in the back of his mind he recognizes some form of guilt for letting Robert’s pillows get so wet, but that’s the least of his worries at the moment.
“Billy.” Robert kneels by the edge of the bed. Through blurry eyes, Bill can see his eyebrows furrow in concern. “What happened?” Bill shakes his head. He can’t. He can’t say it. Saying it makes it too real. “C’mon, you can do it. I know you can. Tell me what’s wrong.”
“St-Stanley. He - He’s-” Bill doesn’t get to finish before a fresh wave of tears wash over him. Fuck. Fuckfuckfuckfuck.
Robert scoops him up in his arms, cuddling him close to his chest.
“It’s okay,” he murmurs. “You’re going to be okay. I’m going to make sure you’re okay.”
And Bill can do nothing but believe him.
-
Bill wakes up about an hour later to Robert gently mouthing at his neck, his hand gripping Bill’s hip hard enough to leave bruises. Bill grumbles softly and tries to roll away, but Robert tugs him back. He moves the hand on his hip to wrap tightly around Bill’s waist, effectively pinning him against him.
“‘M tt-tired,” Bill whines, voice still sore from crying.
“Had a dream,” Robert mumbles. His breath against his neck makes Bill’s skin prickle, but not in the same way Stan’s lips had. “A good dream. Need your help.”
“Ruh-Robert,” Bill huffs.
Not now, he wants to say. Not after he just got his heart stolen from his body.
“I’ll help you look for Stanley tomorrow,” Robert says. He’s moved on to mouthing at Bill’s jaw. “I always help you.”
Bill’s resolve crumbles. How is he supposed to argue with that? “Ff-Fine.”
He reaches down for Robert’s belt, but Robert catches his wrist in one, big hand and pins it above his head. It has Bill’s heart pounding in his ears and ice filling his veins.
“I have a better idea.”
Bill squirms, hoping it’ll convince Robert to let him go, but all it does is egg him on. He squeezes his wrists tighter, until Bill has to grit his teeth to stop himself from flinching.
“I’ve nuh-never - Wuh-We’ve never-”
“We can look all day tomorrow.”
“I - I don’t know.”
Robert sighs heavily. “A man will only be so satisfied with blow jobs, Billy.”
And, God, Bill just wants to go home. He hasn’t wanted to go there in so long but right now it’s the only place he can think of. He wants to fucking go home. He wants his mom to hold him and tell him he’s going to be alright. He wants his dad to hug him tight and promise to keep him safe.
He just wants to be okay.
“All day?” he asks weakly.
Robert nods. “All day.”
“Oh-Okay.”
-
The first thing Stan notices when he wakes up is that he’s cold.
The second thing is that it’s dark. Too dark to see anything.
The third is that he can’t fucking move.
His hands are behind his back, rope biting into his wrists. His legs are curled underneath him. He doesn’t think he could stand if he wanted to (which he does, he really, really does) but his ankles are tied together anyway. And his back aches from being hunched over for God knows how long. He tries to sit up straight, but something yanks him back down.
And then he stays there like that for what feels like at least a thousand years.
When a door is finally opened, it’s almost too much to bare. The light is dim, barely there, but Stan still has to squint to get used to it.
And in the doorway is a man. A very familiar man, in fact. A man who knows his exact address after picking up his dumbass friend at 1 in the morning.
“Good morning,” says Robert.
He’s grinning wildly and Stan wants to fucking cry. He wants to sob until his lungs give out, and then he wants to cry some more.
He can feel the beginning of pinprick tears forming behind his eyes, and he bites the inside of his cheek harshly to stop them from spilling out. He may be a coward but he’ll be damned if he lets Robert know that.
“Aren’t you going to say hello?” Robert says cheerily.
Stan doesn’t answer. He’s too focused on other things, like not crying in front of a psycho kidnapper.
“Awe, Stanny, that’s not very polite.”
He crosses the last few steps to ruffle Stan’s hair and Stan fucking breaks. A sob wrenches its way out of his throat, making his shoulders shake and eyes burn. Tears dribble pathetically down his cheeks, landing in tiny puddles on the floor.
“I’m suh-sorry,” Stan manages to choke out. “Wh-Wh-Whatever - Whatever I dd-duh-did. I’m sorry.” He flinches as Robert cards his fingers through his hair, wrenching his head back when his fingers catch on the curls. “Please.”
Stan doesn’t know what he’s begging for, all he knows is that it doesn’t work. Because Robert fucking laughs, all loud and boisterous, as if Stan’s told him one of Richie’s shitty jokes.
“Oh, Stanny,” he murmurs. He moves to grasp Stan’s chin with one hand, squeezing his cheeks and pressing dirty nails into his skin. “This wouldn’t have happened if you had just kept your hands off of what’s mine.”

Anyone else here having played dragon quest 11? If so; what are your thoughts about it?
To share my own, warning: a rant incoming:
I personally am a huge fan of the dragon quest series. Started with DQ9 and got so hooked that I bought as many of the older games I could find to play through, got the remake of DQ7 - and was super excited when I heard that DQ11 was on its way (I admit: I was upset about hearing that the 3ds version was only available in Japan, but hey, didn't stop me).
When I first was asked for a review on it, I was amazed and still overly happy about finally having the time to play it after months of it laying around. I... I wasn't as deep in the story yet as I thought, and the further I played, the more I noticed some flaws that started to bother me more and more.
Now I took some time to see how other players and sites viewed it and took a look at their views - and I was a little disappointed to see that those things weren't mentioned. So I will bring them up now:
Again warning: The following will heavily focus on this aspect that I criticize. This is in no way intended to make the entire game bad, it has a lot of other features which add to the image as well. It may seem like I try to make the entire game look bad by focusing on this point, but that is not the intention. The intention lies within shedding light to this and wondering if anyone else has noticed it as well.
I was disappointed to see that the main female cast was weakly represented and that a lot of their lives and backstories revolve around men. Like yeah that can happen but it was 2017 at the release and I feel like we can give more representation than the stereotype, especially when that doesn't happen in just ONE of the female main characters, but in a lot of them (gladly, not all).
To the start of the game: Stereotypically we've got the main protagonists childhood friend who obviously seemed to have a crush on him, and later on was very focused on him. I really didn't mind that because it's just so known I just shrugged it off.
A little later we meet our first female team mates, the twins Veronica and Serena. Was I the only one who was a little weirded out that they introduced themselves (and apparently were raised with that view too) as their sole purpose being to serve and aid the hero? As the story progressed further, I honestly was pretty bothered by how their lives seemed to always have revolved around that and their future apparently only consisting of being the heros’ shield and aid. Gladly much later on in the game we found out about Veronica's life goals, it wasn't much to equal it, but I was glad to see.
It gets weird for me at Jade, the hero's "adopted sister" (Their kingdoms were super close and she explained multiple times how she felt and acts like his big sister). Her first introduction is overly focusing on s*xualizing her (who tf would give her such an outfit for a martial arts fighter anyways? This detailed boob cupping isn't protecting her chest at all), we didn't know then about that family thing. Even more bothers me everything at the Casino where she's been brainwashed by a monster into a flirty bunny girl with a heart choker and uses s*xual styled attacks, on our hero as well like flirting with him. Knowing that family lore made the fight super uncomfortable for me. There's more about what they could possibly be hinting on that happened to her, but I will not go into detail about this as it is highly triggering.
So here we've got our team... but you know what else bothered me? How some of the female villains were portrayed. The MOST disappointing by FAR was Crystalinda for me. Introduced as an incredibly powerful witch in the century of legends where even the strongest mage couldn't defeat her without help of the monsters, a woman who terrorized an entire kingdom and more with just a snap of her fingers - fcking strong and badass. You know what happened to her? They turned her into a moaning mess who lusted after the first guy that found her book. She was obsessed by thinking he's hot and wanting to be his bride, her talking was mostly accompanied by moaning. Reasoned because she was "so lonely and he was the first to talk to her again". Bro tf did you do to this badass woman?! Idc that you reason in her info box that she's a "hopeless romantic". You could have also just not added that, give us a strong villain tf who doesn't melt because one (1) man appeared.
Or the woman with the other world behind the fresco, I only know her German name now and I think I remember that it's different in English. Ruins of one of the most powerful kingdoms back then, she probably was the powerful ruler of it - and she is obsessed with being the grand villains bride. Uh-
TW: MENTION OF S**CIDE
I could also comment on the Mermaid Mishelle, whose entire point of existence was that she fell in love with a man and waited decades for him to come back; only to k*ll herself when she found out that he passed away a long while ago (I did cry though at that story, it was very emotional).
But to be fair: you've also got strong women who don't rely on that as their story. The woman who raised the hero (German name is Petra) and was loved by the whole village and was a strong woman with a strong mind, but of course was a very caring mom too.
Or the queen of the mermaids, her German name is Marina and I love it. She's strong, majestic, wise, and has her heart with her people. There do exist strong females in the more main character section, of course, but a majority is catering for men or being s*xualized in favor of them, and I think that the team could have done better on that.
Now, not all other games have done much better. In DQ5 an important plot is that one man demands to marry one of his daughters or your childhood friend in exchange for a much needed child. But I also remember characters of other games who had more personality than catering. And that's on that.
Story wise it's awesome. Being perceived as an evil by some instead of the hope as always? Hell yeah THAT is a change (my guess is that both, the term "luminary" and "dark spawn" are correct, depending on whose side you look at. Ofc the monsters would fear him and see him as evil, his point is to banish them and keep them away). Well... to Act 2 at least. I don't want to talk about Act 3, but that is a personal preference. Some may like doing everything again from an arc with some changes and a different starting situation... I absolutely hate that, because it gives me the feeling of having done everything before for nothing. And no- I don't wanna sacrifice deep friendships and understandings, redemption arcs and clearing past things up, helping some people out of misery, to get one person back, and lose everything of that in return because only I travel back to that point. And it gets way worse after that anyways.
The writing is... good. It had some of these things you see in "DON'T do that" writing advice blogs (eg awful sibling dialogue in showing how they're siblings) - but I think those flaws in some scenes only stood out to me because I dealt with these blogs just a bit before playing.
Some sites say it's "the best game of the franchise so far", do I agree with that? No. It's a moderate to good game, it has some very nice new mechanics (some which sadly don't have any practical use. Eg being able to walk freely in battles but it doesn't affect that ur getting hit no matter where you stand) and a new interesting story with good throwbacks to older, by now traditional, game settings - but the "new" here wasn't nearly impressing me as much as new things did in previous games. And there's also this flaw with having a problem in diverse and strong female main characters. This isn't to excuse the game mechanics of some of the previous games which sometimes also have a very shitty stereotype dominating (See DQ5) - but again: especially in 2017 (release of the game), where we've an uprising demand and change in better representation of women other than negative stereotypes and flat characters, I would expect a better development of the characters. At least that this problem doesn't take up a good majority.
And you know- amazing graphics (I have to give them that, that was fantastic) aren't the only requirement to be the best game of the series. In fact, graphics should play a minor role as a game can be capturing and fascinating without having the most realistic or detailed graphics. It's about the content in it. So yeah, it's an overall good game, but I wouldn't call it the best - and I really want to encourage a by far better representation on the next game. U can do better.
And yeah, it is a part of many to complete this game, but it sadly was a part that bothered me more the more I played it. Because when I first noticed that one character was bad representation, I took a closer look at the others to see if they do better, and unfortunately a lot didn’t. So please improve this next time, let us have deep female characters again who are strong and badass.

In Comment to Wayward Winchester’s Video “The Dark Side Of Supernatural Fandom”
Direct quote from my comment on his video.
“(Hey please read this comment because I think it might help with the whole copyright argument!!!!)
(Link To follow along in the Tech Law Journal In it’s entirety. https://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107 )
https://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107
So I think you might be getting copyright confused with plagiarism. “Plagiarism is an offense to the author of a work while copyright violations are an offense to the copyright holder. Avoiding plagiarism is about properly apportioned intellectual credit, while copyright is about maintaining revenue streams.”
For instance I’m about to cite where I found this information I quoted (University Library, Copyright VS Plagiarism, researchguides.uic.edu) see how that works?
But let’s discuss the claims made about copyright mentioned in the video in question. (Excuse the change in tone, I actually studied Media Ethics And Law in college) https://www.youtube.com/intl/en-GB/yt/about/copyright/fair-use/?noapp=1#yt-copyright-four-factors. If you follow this link it will take you directly to YouTubes explanation of “Fair Use” with out all the techno law terminology. Which I’m sure you are already familiar with since you call attention to it in your video description, particularly section 107 of the Tech Law Journal.
Section 107 mentions using material that is under copyright for uses in “criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.” However if you read the next sentence it gets a wee bit muddy. It then goes on to list requirements that need to be listed on the posting of the content to be considered “fair use”.
“(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.”
So that is exactly what section 107 of the Tech Law Journal states. Next I would like to visit the section above this, section 106, which 107 through 120 is stated to be subject to. 106. Exclusive rights in copyrighted works. I’ll highlight the points that are relevant to this subject for the sake of time”
“Subject to sections 107 through 122, the owner of copyright under this title has the exclusive rights to do and to authorize any of the following:
(2) to prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work;
(3) to distribute copies or phonorecords of the copyrighted work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending;
(4) in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and motion pictures and other audiovisual works, to perform the copyrighted work publicly;
(5) in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and pictorial, graphic, or sculptural works, including the individual images of a motion picture or other audiovisual work, to display the copyrighted work publicly; and
(6) in the case of sound recordings, to perform the copyrighted work publicly by means of a digital audio transmission.” What this means is that the owner of the copyright has the right to police how individuals use their material.”
In relation to using copyrighted content for “Compilations and derivative works” as in altering the content and putting your water mark on it essentially claiming as your own work. Section 103 of the Tech Law Journal details this, which in turn bring us full circle back to section 106 as mentioned previously.
Then since we’re pointing all this out let’s go to the fact that none of the comments in this video are cited properly. Section 106a “Rights of certain authors to attribute and integrity” which is also subject to 107 as well as 106! It goes on about not using the name of another author on a piece of work or visual art he or she did not create along with the limitations on the “destruction or mutilation” of another authors work.
Now discussing plagiarism in relation because it goes hand in hand with copyright, an example would be quoting someone’s words from the internet, printed article or an interview (screenshots of Twitter, texts and Instagram posts) without acknowledging the author(s). Failing to credit and properly cite someone else’s thoughts or ideas when paraphrasing.
And for someone so concerned with another author using a meme they supposedly created and the ethics that should be involving plagiarism, you don’t seem to care to much about other authors concerns in regard to your own use of their content. Assuming that you did indeed copyright this particular video, which legally would not stop anyone from creating similar content, I would point out section 113 which discusses the requirements for removing the content that was used without permission. Which “section 106 shall apply”
“(A) the owner has made a diligent, good faith attempt without success to notify the author of the owner’s intended action affecting the work of visual art, or
(B) the owner did provide such notice in writing and the person so notified failed, within 90 days after receiving such notice, either to remove the work or to pay for its removal.”
Oh and you also can’t quote another person for any reason (especially to “SLANDER” them) unless you cite them in their entirety, meaning giving the source of the original quote so that viewers can fact check, and can be certain you aren’t simply using the best and only words to your advantage.
Probably my personal favorite quote that people love to use when discussing these types of matters is “it’s a free country”. I’m not even going to delve into the political part about how that statement is inaccurate in the most infuriating way possible instead focusing on the governmental definition. The first amendment states. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
So really this means that Americans have the right to protest the government without the government shutting them down. This doesn’t mean we all have the right to say what ever we want about anything whenever the time suits us. The first amendment does not permit anyone to “incite actions that would harm others. (e.g. “[S]houting Fire in a crowded theater”] Schenck v. United States, 249 U.S. 47 (1919). So even though the words that haven’t physically injured another person (to yours or my knowledge) it isn’t freedom of speech, it’s actually harassment, which someone could potentially take you to court for if serious enough.
So let’s think about this; I personally didn’t have much of an opinion on this matter until I watched the video justifying everything that’s happened. I progressively got more and more infuriated while watching. I cringed at all the finger pointing and mud slinging. It breaks me that this fandom is going through this extremely emotional and wrenching time together (which I desperately hoped would bring us all closer together) instead we are at each other’s throats. If ever there was a time that we seriously needed to stand together, it would be now. After the 15th season we are going to be the ones keeping this fandom/family alive, and that’s going to be next to impossible if we can’t stand as a united front. I refuse to let this beautiful entity that is Supernatural fade into obscurity.
I honestly love this family no matter how much we bicker, y’all are honestly one of the most important things in my life, but honestly guys, this is kind of f*cked up.
There is never a good enough reason to disrespect another human being, much less our own family. But honestly if y’all have a problem with another person, come to them with facts not feelings. If they choose to listen then awesome! You worked a problem out in a healthy productive manner and chances are you both feel good about the outcome (ideally). If not, then sh*t at least you tried. But honestly if someone came at you with insults and anger and hate are you going to be likely to listen to what they have to say? I know I sure as h*ll wouldn’t want to.
I doubt anyone is going to read all this but I sure hope so. I’ve been brushing up on the Tech Law Journal for the last 3 or so hours to make this point. But even if no one does, just know that I love you all and please don’t forget to “Always Keep Fighting” luvs! (Jared Padalecki)
P.S. Sorry/not sorry for the essay.”

Powerpuff Girls 2016 - The Top Title Cards
One of the artistic choices the show makes is its use of unique title cards. On one hand, the reboot's title cards lack the punch of the original's. The original had the Powerpuff Girls flying, making. In the reboot, it's lumpy text with some drawings surrounding it with some soft ambient techno over it. On the other hand, the reboot lacks the punch of the original, so they fit perfectly.
One improvement I can see with these title cards is the variety. The originals do not have pictures, it's just white text on black background. The reboot has these works of art for each episode. I don't hate the original's title cards, far from it, but I couldn't rank them. Just for fun, I’m going to rank my top favorite title cards of PPG 2016. These will be ranked based on if they fit their episode and whether or not they look great.
10. The Trouble With Bubbles
Out of all the Bubbles coding episodes, this is my favorite one. While the title is actually kind of generic, it does show that this is an episode where Bubbles codes a clone of herself and prints it with a 3D printer. The title is even laid out in a way similar to Scratch, a beginner's programming language that the Powerpuff Girls even had a tie-in with at one point. It's a little more literal than something abstract or symbolic, but it works.
9. The Secret Life of Blossom Powerpuff
Yes, they actually believed that the Powerpuff Girls' last name should be Powerpuff in Season 1. Let's ignore that, as that's one of the few aspects they did change their mind on in Season 2. I like this effect of Blossom getting split into two different versions of herself, one in a Victorian dress, and the other as an astronaut. This does perfectly show what this episode is going to be about: Blossom imagining herself as different versions of herself much like Walter Mitty.
They had to leave out one Blossom for this title to look good. Honestly, I would have went with the breakdancer Blossom, as it would have been a contrast between the elegant Victorian Blossom. The astronaut Blossom still works as a "Past vs. Future" contrast, and the cynic in me also notes that they are also the low points of the episode.
8. The Tell Tale Schedulebot
Maybe I'm going for more of how it looks rather than what it represents. The title references a horror story, and, while it's not exactly a reference to the original story, the title card represents a horror theme. Yes, Schedulebot seemingly rises from the dead in one of the very, very few times they referenced plots from previous episodes, and the title card shows it as this zombie rising from the dead. They put this title card in this artsy cloud-esque smudge, with lightning inside of it, which adds to the effect.
7. Once Upon A Townsville
The episode's idea is that it's a Disney-esque princess in a modern day world. I did not get this at first, thinking this was just a generic city. I didn't even notice the little circle around it, which is supposed to represent that part of the logo where Tinkerbell flies around the Disney castle in an arc.
I think the less said about Once Upon A Townsville, the better, so let's move on.
6. Save The Date
Not all of my favorite title cards are graphically complex, as this one is pretty simple: just Ms. Keane and a really, really big shadow. The obvious meaning comes from how Ms. Keane turns into a giant in this episode. I can't help but see another meaning in this, referring to the other plot of the episode that is intertwined with.
Ms. Keane is on her first date with some random dude, and she is not confident about it. She can't walk in high heels, she has a zit that we thankfully never get to see, and she's late! Maybe I'm looking too deep into this, but I'll still rank it this high.
5. Breaking Bliss
Also known as part four of the Power of Four, which is actually five parts long. Each part of the Power of Four has a standalone version, complete with its own unique title card. This is the only special to get this treatment; Small World just uses that magic hat for every episode. Outside of Find Your Bliss, which just has the title on 3D glasses, they're all pretty good. I even like Bliss Reminisce's title card, with. I decided to choose only one, and it was a tough pick between this one and Blisstersweet Symphony.
In the end, I went with this one, which is a good representation of the episode. Bliss is utterly broken inside in this episode, and the title card puts that in a symbolic way that looks aesthetically pleasing. The only real problem with this one is that the text seems to be put as an afterthought. Granted, this title card never aired on US TV; Power of Four only aired as a special, and that only came with a rather generic title card of four Powerpuff Girls flying.
4. Power Up Puff
Rather than outright showing the aura powers that were the star attraction to this episode, this episode focuses more on how Blossom seems to be overshadowed by her sisters. I do like the idea behind this one; Blossom is just way in the background while her sisters do these poses.
I will say the drawing is a bit awkward here. They forgot Buttercup's all-important cowlick, which is shockingly common in title cards. so it's a little bit lower than another episode that has a similar idea.
3. Bubbles The Blue
Well, this episode seems to rank high in any PPG 2016 list I would make. Bubbles is sitting down, looking sad, while her sisters are very tiny. I would say it represents their understanding of the episode's situation, and not in a way that can be blamed on bad writing. This episode's title card is very similar to the last entry in this list. Honestly, I would have had this in a tie.
Also, they actually remembered Bubbles' pigtail bubbles. That doesn't look like Blossom or Buttercup, though. That looks like a wrapped peppermint and one of those Ring Pops. I can still see what they were doing there.
2. Can't Buy Love
One of the more artsy title cards. They could have just had a cupcake, but instead, we get this romantic shot under the moonlight. One may have to ignore the participants here. If it is your thing, that's fine, but I don't think a lot of people would have wanted BarryBucks. The joke is that's the case even in-universe.
This episode is about Princess believing this fantasy this title card seems to portray. Everyone else around her isn't even aware of this, including the hunk-in-her-eyes-and-only-her-eyes Barry. Since this episode is from her perspective, the title card decides to use a shot from her perspective.
1. Salamander
There's absolutely no way this title card wouldn't be #1. Just look at that volcano's majesty. The detailed lines, those two trees that give the title card more body, and that sculpt of the villain's face. This volcano lair looks like something straight out of those 80's cartoons with the over-the-top bad guys, which is exactly what they were going for with this episode's lead villain. This one is a work of art, plain and simple.
I'm not going to do a Bottom 10, because most of the bad title cards can be summed up as "yup, that's an X", with maybe some text put in as an afterthought. I will do a bottom 3, though.
3. Man Up 3: The Good, The Bad, and the Manly
One thing I didn't really notice is that they did remove the wacky inflatable tube man from the second Man Up. They didn't do it for this one. Man Up 4 at least had a different title card. Sure, it's just a strawberry, a reference to a plot that rarely even appears in the episode, but it's better than reusing the same log and tube man again and again.
The biggest flaw with this one besides the reuse is a similar problem the second one had: this title card doesn't convey Man Up 3 to me. It's just Man Up, with some really tiny fine print that says it is the third one.
2. Odd Bubbles Out
It's a Bubbles head surrounded by hearts, which has basically nothing to do with this episode, as Bubbles, surprisingly, never really got a love interest. Maybe it's supposed to represent the love of her friendship with Donny and only Donny that depends on his friendship with Bubbles and only Bubbles, but that's a stretch.
Also...Odd Bubbles Out? I know I'm judging these title cards based on their artwork rather than their titles, but that has to be addressed. It's a play on being the Odd One Out, which is certainly what's happening in this episode, but I can't even consider it a pun.
1. The Bubbles-Sitters Club
It just looks like a screenshot they put a sillohuette on. If they couldn't even bother to make the text not look like something they just slapped on at the last second, why should I put more effort in describing it?
Next week, I'm going to dedicate Saturdays to DuckTales 2017 reviews, since that show is returning. Just one per week; as much as I want to review them quickly, I'd rather not have another hiatus. I also need the time for college. See you soon!

'''CSR Racing 2 ? An Introduction!'''
The sequel is an excellent new chapter of drag racing series that has created plenty of buzz in the mobile gaming world. The game is seriously good looking and has incredible graphics to offer. Without any doubt, the makers have established new standards when it comes to visuals in the mobile gaming world, and now you will compete against real players worldwide. Players are allowed to customize their supercars, and they are asked to make a perfect team with their friends or other people to tune their rides and win the competition.
Available for free of cost, CSR 2 is all new and easy to play. The most impressive feature of the game is the stunning details that you will find for your favorite cars. It is hard to find any other mobile game having the potential to make racing so real. That is why there are so many people looking to get free gold and cash.
'''How Does the CSR Racing 2 Hack Work?'''
With plenty of tips available for the game, you need to only apply the ones that are safe and result oriented. Making use of the Generator mentioned here is easy, and you are not required to have any coding knowledge. To use the CSR Racing 2 cheats, you are required to take advantage of the Generator and carefully follow the few steps mentioned on the official tool website. Here you are not asked to download and install any files thus making the Generator is extremely safe and efficient. It is a matter of few seconds, and the generator will get you desired amount of cash and gold in your gaming account.
'''No Security Concerns'''
More often than players are not willing to use hack tools and cheats as they don?t want to get their account ban. Well, they do have a right reason to avoid these tools but CSR Racing 2 cheats revealed here are safe from all points of view. The coders have added an impressive anti-ban script that will not only protect the identity of the users but will generate the required currencies on each occasion.
Also, the same team that created the CSR Racing 2 hack, worked before on the Golf Clash hack, and so far there have been no issues reported with that one. Even the concerns related to viruses and malicious codes have been erased completely. The tool will cost you nothing, but it will still save plenty of money that you are required to spend on cash and gold. Don?t waste a moment and use the hack tool to become a strong contender.
'''The Sequel to A Great And Unique Game'''
CSR Racing 2 is the first mobile game released by NaturalMotion ever since they joined Zynga. One thing is sure ? all the players that loved the original games will be thrilled with the sequel. That being said, if you don?t appreciate the uniqueness of the CSR Racing series probably won?t find that they are looking for here.
'''Drag Racing Is Anything But a Drag'''
NaturalMotion?s new game sticks to the recipe from the original ? it offers short, linear races where you are in charge of starting your car, ensuring proper transmission between gears and timing your boosts. Yes, it?s that simple, so if you prefer seeing cars do other things besides going in a straight line, this might not be the game for you. However, keep in mind ? although it?s not the most sophisticated racing simulator on the market, it is incredibly addictive and offers hours of fun! And it gets even better when you use the CSR Racing 2 cheats, as you won?t have any limitations.
Before moving on to multiplayer racing which is the core of the game, let?s mention the single player campaign. CSR 2 offers you the chance to work your way through the ranks by competing against opposing racers split into five different groups. Each group offers four regular opponents you have to beat in order to face the boss of that particular crew. You will need three victories against the boss to advance, but if you make an extra win you will also get that boss?s ride as an award. Naturally, every next opponent is tougher than the previous one, so it won?t be so easy to dominate the streets of the city. That is why the CSR Racing 2 hack comes in very handy, as you won?t have to spend money to further advance.
'''Amazing Scenery And Perfect Controls'''
CSR Racing 2 actually features only one course, but it is a large interconnected 3D map that you will gradually discover. The scenery is stunning, which doesn?t surprise me because NaturalMotion focuses on graphics. Although the courses are fantastic, the cars steal the show when it comes to design, but we?ll talk about that later.
The controls are very responsive and extremely easy to learn. Although you will quickly figure out what you need to do, it will still take some exercise to master the controls. The idea has not changed ? CSR Racing 2 still features drag races from one point to another. However, the system of lights you might know from the previous installment is gone. Instead, you will have a zone on the tachometer with the task of keeping the needle in the green. Some other games have taken this similar approach, and it worked, so there is no reason to be different for CSR 2. Another game who shines in terms of graphics and controls is Injustice 2, so I suggest that you check it out as well. Just as the creators of the CSR Racing cheats will soon do.
'''The Garage Is the Key to Winning the Race'''
Don?t get me wrong, the actual races are exciting, but I think that the developers intentionally focused on what happens in the garage. That is what brought the first game of the series a lot of success, so it?s only natural to keep the winning formula. Perfectly tuning your car in the garage is what will secure you the win once you get out on the road. Your car has seven different parts, and each of them can be upgraded across five stages (six if you count special parts). That means that you will need a lot of work (or money), or the CSR Racing 2 hack to make your car the fastest on the road.
Aside from pure upgrading, the game also allows you to get under the hood. This is where strategy comes into play. You will be able to adjust different things, such as gear ratios, nitrous timings, and tire pressure. The modifications you make should be in regards to the specifics of the race expecting you. For example, if you are about to participate in a half-mile race, raw speed might be more important than acceleration. And in order to handle all types of races, and access the CSR2 best cars, you?ll have to either spend thousands or use the CSR2 cheats.
'''A Wide Variety of Vehicles'''
CSR Racing 2 offers more than 50 licensed cars we would love to drive in real life. McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Koenigsegg, and Pagani are all featured in the game. You are allowed to have multiple vehicles in your garage, and you can play mix and match with the parts. If you have some usable parts, you can strip them of one car and attach them to another.
Aside from making your car the fastest, you also want to add a personal touch to your vehicle. That is why NaturalMotion included a broad range of cosmetic enhancements. There is a wide variety of paint, rims, interior trims and brake calipers to choose from. Custom license plates, decals, and paint wraps are also there to make your ride unique. Another reason to get creative is the freshness bonus, which you receive every week for customizing your vehicles. CSR 2 goes into details so much that it really feels like a real life car configurator. And having unlimited cash and gold by using the CSR2 Cheats for iOS and Android allows you try out everything out.
'''Are You Ready to Take on the World?'''
The multiplayer mode allows you to play against your friends or take on the world together. The game comes with a feature that enables you to join existing or start your own crew to climb the game?s online leaderboard. Live Races are by far the best part of the gameplay as they will offer you the chance to compete against an opponent in real time. Considering that even small parts of seconds matter, it is worth mentioning that it works perfectly and we didn?t notice any issues while playing online. Even after using the CSR2 cheats, there were no problems reported.
The only thing that might have been better is the fact that you will occasionally need a certain number of races to get new cars or afford upgrades. However, there are games that are far less fair when it comes to awarding the in-game currency. Also, the option of joining a team makes the number of required races more bearable.
'''Car Enthusiasts of the World, Unite!'''
The beauty of CSR Racing 2 lies in its stunning visuals. Each model of the car has been given the greatest possible attention. NaturalMotion asked the manufacturers to send them the official CAD 3D modeling data of their cars to secure that each vehicle is extremely detailed and exact to the real life version. They replicated some cool things, such as the volcano orange paint used on McLaren P1, which changes colors based on the perspective. The interiors of the cars are also realistic, and even the engines are rendered from the actual schematics. Some of the world?s most reputable car tuners were hired as consultants to make the tuning system as realistic as possible.
In the end, it is perfectly clear that CSR Racing 2 was made for people who love cars. It features officially licensed and meticulously designed supercars of today and each of the models is faithfully represented. If your phone?s or tablet?s hardware is more powerful, you will also be able to open the hood, doors and the trunk. Although the graphics are limited when it comes to mobile devices, CSR Racing took it as far as possible when it comes to stunning visuals.
'''Final Words'''
The majority of us can only dream of owning a supercar. This game enables us to have several of them, tune them up the way we want to and pit them against opponents in drag races. This is not your usual racing game, but it is definitely worth your attention if you are a car lover. The sequel is much better than the original, and it improves player?s experience in every way, which means that the game was definitely worth the waiting. Also keep in mind that the CSR Racing 2 Cheats require no apk or modding in order to be used. The entire CSR Racing hack runs online, as a resource generator.
CSR Racing 2 is available on both iOS and Android and can be downloaded for free from their respective stores. As it was the case with the previous installment, you have the option of making in-game purchases to upgrade your vehicle.

Modeling the Future of Marketing
Looking through the futurist's lens.
If you were asked to describe various alternative futures for your business or marketplace, or even -- at the most grandiose -- the shape of the world in 2030, how would you start? What approach would you take to distinguish and contrast different possible futures? Would you draw a picture? Tell stories? Clip images on Instagram? Start with what you'd like the future state to be, and work back to the present, aspirationally?
Answering that question -- or trying to -- is the stock in trade of the futurist. Those who try to think systematically about the future generally are not involved in trying to 'tell the future' like some carnival fortune teller. In fact, the questionable practice of 'forecasting' that has led many to avoid the term 'futurist' altogether, and to be suspicious of those who do. (Personally, I consider myself an anthropologist of the future, which is a convoluted way of sidestepping the 'futurist' term, but holding on to the magic involved with 'the future'.)
Still, we do need to explore alternative futures, and to try to understand the qualitative differences between them, and across a set of potential futures one of the most accessible dimensions to apply is the likelihood of the various alternatives. This way of thinking lines up naturally with the way that our minds are inclined, so we don't need to create some futures calculus (or invent the crystal ball) to spin stories about the music business of 2030, why autonomous cars will change the world's transport systems, or the impact of a hypothetical Chinese pharmaceutical platform on the US health care system.
When my long-time friend Marshall Kirkpatrick asked me to get involved in his Future of Work in Marketing project, I was happy to do so. And when we spoke about what he wanted to do it came as no surprise that he proposed an approach that involves what futurists call the Futures Cone: a model to wrestle with varying levels of potential for different conjectured futures.
The Futures Cone
Joseph Voros' Futures Cone
Joseph Voros is perhaps the best-known modern popularizer of the Futures Cone model as a tool to explore and discuss alternative futures.
As he describes the background of the idea in The Futures Cone, use and history,
Futurists have often spoken and continue to speak of three main classes of futures: possible, probable, and preferable (e.g., Amara 1974, 1981; Bell 1997, and many others). These have at times lent themselves to define various forms of more specialised futures activity, with some futurists focusing on, as it were, exploring the possible; some on analysing the probable; and some on shaping the preferable, with many related variations on this nomenclature and phraseology (e.g., again, Amara 1991, and many others). It is possible to expand upon this three-part taxonomy to include at least 7 (or even 8) major types of alternative futures.
Voros, (after some vacillation about whether or not to include a 'predicted' future in the cone) settled on the model as captured in the graphic above.
In the Cone, time is represented as extending from some starting point at the left -- in this case starting at Now, but in many cases it is more helpful to start in the past to capture trends or events that have come before the present -- and continuing steadily to some point in the future. The overall futures cone is visualized and conceptualized as having stratified subcones. Across all potential futures the subcones range from the projected future (with the highest likelihood of happening), through probable, plausible, possible, and preposterous futures. An added wrinkle is defining a region of the cone as being preferable from the perspective of an individual, organization, demographic, or nation based on a set of value judgments, and perhaps independent of the degree of possibility involved: an aspirational future.
Against a Time Frame
The range of possibility -- projected, probable, plausible, possible, and preposterous -- can be arrayed against a time frame. The way the world is accelerating time seems compressed, so it's best to slice time pretty fine. For this project I selected these successive time periods: now (2018), soon (2020), later (2025), and the future (2030). I have a hard time considering anything outside that time frame (although I spun some scenarios for Wired through 2050 in What Will a Corporation Look Like in 2050).
As a matrix, this looks like this:
cone/time now (2018) soon (2020) later (2025) the 'future' (2030) projected probable preferable plausible possible preposterous
Marshall's List of Questions
The third axis of the Futures Cone is some set of questions or premises that have to be examined, using the thinking and models outlined above. I used a tool, Cardsmith, that allows users to create a matrix like the one above, and to place digital 'post-it' notes in the various cells, and making comments on them as well. This is a great technique for collaborating, and capturing the insights of a team of researchers.
I'll examine Marshall's questions and where I think the possibilities line up in the next sections.
Now (2018)
Marshall posed a topic, triggered by the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica mess:
A data privacy backlash sends everything back to the tried and true when it comes to targeting and marketing in general
I recouched that as a backlash against data 'publicy' -- the opposite of privacy -- and said that backlash is happening now. All the other topics wind up to be farther down the line, in my analysis.
cone/time now (2018) projected probable preferable plausible possible preposterous
Soon (2020)
Most of the issues raised by Marshall fall into this timeframe.
I interpreted one of Marshall's questions as 'Anticapitalist backlash', arising from Inequality, decreased social mobility, and economic polarization, which I deem as projected. Likewise, I believe 'conversational marketing' is coming soon, based on tools like Alexa and Google's Duplex demo.
A great number of the topics we discussed fall into the probable cone, I believe. I feel the 'decline of 'publishing', rise of 'subscription'' is starting already, but will become more mainstream in the next few years.
Marshall wondered if marketers would have to operate like science fiction writers, telling plausible stories about user experiences that may be totally novel, since things are changing so fast. I agree with him.
I believe it is probable than markers will put more value on acquiring new customers than retaining old ones, which is perhaps another result of the rapid change and innovation in many industries.
I think it is probable we will see AI used to augment people at the task level by 2020.
I use the term Amazonification to characterize the increased value of platforms to create demand and the decreased value of brands in such a climate. This is probable, I think.
cone/time soon (2020) projected probable preferable plausible possible preposterous
I think it is plausible that AI may be fulfilling entire marketing functions by 2020 (definitely probable by 2025, projected by 2030). Note that the shift of what is plausible soon to what is probable later is a general case for all of these trends, and I won't explicitly state that shift for other trends. It is implicit. It's plausible that 'retention and growth is more valuable than acquisition' in this timeframe, but I think that varies by the sort of products being marketed.
It's possible, I think, that some marketers will find success focusing on brand over generation of new demand. Some luxury brands may be able to command high margins, for example, while selling new products to existing customers, even in a world of Amazon-like platforms.
Later (2025)
I offered up the theme of a 'post-screen world of marketing', based on the idea that augmented and virtual reality might replace conventional screen-based user experience of PCs and smartphones. I think that is plausible in this time frame.
Similarly, I think it's possible that, by 2025, some marketing roles could be filled entirely by AI, for example running a social media marketing campaign. It's also conceivable that blockchain might have a major impact by this time, although there's a lot of moving pieces for that to come together.
cone/time Later (2025) projected probable preferable plausible possible preposterous
The 'Future' (2030)
I guess that Marshall's themes aren't so far out that many of them are delayed to the 'future' of 2030. But one did: marketing to His, which I think is highly likely by 2030 (and possible in an earlier time frame). If we have His running hedge funds and deciding who to hire in 2018, they will be buying things for corporations by 2030.
cone/time The 'Future' (2030) projected probable preferable plausible possible preposterous
Conclusions and Takeaways
I wanted to take you through one of the most commonly used tools that futurists use to help their clients think systematically about the 'future', and I think this has accomplished that. Perhaps you'll be able to adopt the Futures Cone as a technique to use in your own organization, to think about your markets, competitors, and the trends that shape our world.
Remember:
There is no one 'future'. There are a many possible outcomes for any trend or event, and trying to assign probabilities is a great technique for groups to discuss alternatives.
The Futures Cone approach only requires a whiteboard and some post-it notes, and a room full of people. Try it.
There are a long list of other techniques that futurists use, but across the board they rely onlmost without exception on making up plausible stories about people in the future: people in aggregate, in organizations, or individuals. If you can tell a story about, for example, what a customer in your market might be doing in 2020 when they decide to buy something, you are practicing futurism!
Marshall and I will be returning to the themes in this post later this month in a webinar [details need]. Hope you can attend.

What a year: 2017
This year has been a long year. Much of it centered on the national news. The anger and threats. The crumbling of icons to harassment. The feeling of powerlessness as the majority is ignored in the country. The non-stop desire to see what other embarrassment or trauma was in the news. None of that was good, but good did come out of it.
It was a year of endings for me and, in that ending, hope of new beginnings.
Apple
The only apple device I currently use that I used at the start of 2017 is my iPad Pro. In the spring of 2017, my 2009 iMac died (hard drive failure). It was a slow death which held the promise of maybe keeping it as a display monitor. I tried to use just my Macbook air and either use a dedicated external monitor or the 2009 iMac screen. Both ultimately ended in failure (the dedicated ones never looked good with the MBA while the iMac had catastrophic heat failure).
I ordered a new iMac in May, but they released a brand new version at WWDC. It was just within my return window so I returned the old new one and got a new new one. Been happy with it ever since.
My MBA died in November. It was working fine one moment and then it was dead the next. The repair would have cost more than a new refurbished one at MicroCenter (Apple no longer makes my beloved 11" MBA) and so I got that. Looked briefly at the Macbook but the keyboard felt like pounding on concrete.
iPhoneX came out and I just had to get it despite getting a lot of flack for paying so much for a new phone. I love it. I love the FaceID login flow, the smoothness of it all, the screen, and the camera is just fantastic. Low light, no problem. Crystal clear video. Cool zooming. I am not that much into taking pictures anymore, but this makes me wish I were. I might explore Halide a bit with it to learn more about digital photography. My daughter inherited my iPhone6; she was another motivation as her iPhone4S (my old one) died suddenly.
I bought the iPhoneX and the iPhoneSE for my wife using a tradeoff of a new carrier: Xfinity Mobile. We were paying $90 a month for AT&T. After our first month, we paid $25 for Xfinity Mobile, $12 for 1GB usage level (we used 200Mb) and $13 in taxes. The taxes are non-negotiable, but the $12 could disappear if we used less than 100Mb -- seems unlikely).
So in one year, I got a new iMac, MBA, and iPhone. If FaceID comes to the iPad and they redesign the Apple Pencil to have an eraser part, then I would consider replacing the iPad Pro too.
I also bought AirPods and absolutely love them. They can be a little slow to switch between devices, but otherwise, I am very pleased with them. Being wireless is incredible, and pausing when I take them out is a fantastic feature. I don't use the taps very much. The quality is fine for me and the range is great. Also, when they run low on power, I can charge one at a time. I don't often run out of power, but in the times I do, it comes in handy. I also enjoy sharing them with my wife when we are watching something together that is not intended for our daughter.
Apps
While speaking of Apple, there are a few apps that I find amazing to use:
Mac
Yoink. Drag and drop files onto the side, then find where to put them, drag them out. I find this works very well for me as I like to segment out my process in exactly this way: First find it, then figure out where to put it.
Grand Perspective. This is blowing my mind away. It can scan any folder (or the whole drive) and show in nested blocks the storage area. As one mouses over the blocks, it shows how much space and what file it is. This is a great way to get an understanding for where the space goes. Pretty too.
Magnet. Still early days for me, but this is a windows manager for snapping to a few specified areas using the keyboard. It seems to do exactly what I want though having a few more options would be very useful for me.
The indispensable apps I use all the time are, of course, MacVim, SourceTree (git), Terminal (ssh, literate-programming), 1Password, and the browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari). Some storage programs and some math apps are listed below.
I also acquired AffinityDesigner. It looks awesome and I hope to use it, but I have not yet had an opportunity to really delve into it.
iOS
To be honest, I have tried a number of apps, but there are not that many that really captures my attention. I continue to use SafariBooksOnline, Reeder, Firefox Focus, all for consuming.
Love you to bits. This is a graphical game that reminds me strongly of text-based games. My daughter and I both enjoyed playing through it. It is the spiritual successor to the much beloved (and gone) Tiny Thief.
GrafnCalc83. A wonderful touch implementation of the TI-83. I have the actual calculator, but the iOS version is a joy to work with while being very faithful to what the TI-83 would produce.
Many of the apps I come across seem to demo nicely (IKEA furniture placement app, for example), but I simply do not use that many despite having a lot of them.
I do use Notability for writing out notes on my iPad. It was particularly useful in conjunction with Screenflow in doing videos of working out mathematics problems.
I have also used AstroPad for converting my iPad into a graphics tablet for my desktop.
Storage
With all the failures of my devices this year, backup has certainly been on my mind. I had pretty good luck with them all except for my daughter's iPhone4S though I am not sure that there was anything much lost on it. Right now, I am using iMazing to do backups to an external drive connected to my iMac. They do it wirelessly to all the devices and this seems to be working fine.
For the desktop and laptops, I use Carbon Copy Cloner 5 and back the laptops up once a month. I also have Arq which backs up the high use folders (desktop, downloads, documents, my repositories) to OneDrive. Additionally, I have a main external storage folder that keeps a bunch of stuff, such as the photo library and I back that up to another external drive.
I just finished sorting all the many "messy desktop" folders all around and consolidating all the materials. Saw some interesting memories along the way, including my Tiddlywiki experiments. I have my OneDrive sync folder with a variety of documents that I find useful. I hope to keep it in sync with the folders on the main Storage device, probably using rsync.
Storage is still a bit of a pain, but I am hoping to work at it.
Currently, I have Amazon Cloud Storage and OneDrive. They are both very nice. I opted to not go with iCloud because I could not understand how to control what was syncing where. It sounded like they try to stuff my hard drives full and manage it. I am a big fan of having control even if it does cause me headaches of organization.
Jobs
My jobs have certainly changed a bit this year. I quit one part-time online teaching gig because I did not like the direction it was heading. I also wanted to have more time for other efforts. But another of my part-time online teaching gigs has been going crazy with enrollment so instead of 2 semesters, it looks like I will be teaching 3 semesters in the year.
I also left the neighborhood association. I am quite pleased to no longer be going to meetings.
My Arts&Ideas job also expanded to include a summer camp for our students. It went well and we expect to continue it. It is a very different feel, much more relaxed, but it also takes up a lot of time. I did feel that having limited free time helped keep me focused on working on what I was concerned with.
Healthcare
We have used CareFirst since going on our own about five years ago. We initially had $300-500 in premiums per month, but last year it spiked to $900 and now this year it would be $1500. This is insane given our income levels. So we switched to KaiserPermanente for about $500 a month after subsidies. I worry about the stability of the health system, but I guess we'll take it one year at a time.
This year, none of us needed medical help, that I can recall. In previous years, I had sicknesses and a surgery, but this year was a healthy year.
I did get a FitBit which has helped me stay motivated to move around. My weight is not moving in the direction I want it to, but it does seem at least stable. My goal is to lose about 30 pounds from where I am now.
Shoes and Sandals
This is the year when my feet stopped wanting to wear shoes. Shoes I have worn for a long time became uncomfortable. Perhaps my feet have gotten wider, perhaps I just have transferred my claustorphobia to my feet.
In any event, I started wearing sandals. All the time. Even with socks. To deal with weather, I have overshoes. One pair ($10) is for rain and light cold or snow. Another pair is expensive ($100) but are built for heavy winter use.
I have used both of them, I find them amazing. They look a little dodgy, but I love to wear my sandals and this is a neat separation of the external needs. The foot size of these overshoes are very large, but my feet are securely placed inside thanks to the sandals.
Inside, I have the comfort of open-toed sandaling.
RPG
Pushed by the students at Arts&Idea, I have been working on a new role-playing system based off of D&D. I call it self-directed role-playing. It takes the classes and breaks them up into individual skills. The system is complicated for the assignment of experience points and requires a computer. I also revamped the magic system to open it up to characters in a more general way. The combat is largely opposed rolls of attack versus defense. The initiative system is also computerized to allow for a dynamic ordering based on trying to make everyone feel like they are participating more (the less well one does or the more minor the action, the sooner one gets to play again; also defending slows one down a little as defending is rolling dice).
One neat feature (I hope) is that instead of a d20 for everything, the skills start at d4 and work up to d20, gaining modifiers at each level. Since attack and defense are opposed, this should balance out, regardless of how it goes, but I am hoping to reduce some of the random swings of fortune while still giving the thrill of rolling. The damage is a multiplier based on weapon and other factors, multiplied by how well one does in succeeding in the attack.
The biggest question is whether we can run this at a fast speed.
I hope this deals with the problems I have with D&D. The material is very nice and thorough, but the system has always felt not quite right. I have done some playtesting with a brave group of guinea pigs. In a week, I hope to begin two groups working through the prepared D&D adventures of Out of the Abyss and Curse of Strahd.
Fifth Staff
We spent the year at school looking to hire a fifth staff. It was quite a journey. We learned a lot, had a lot of fun with the Hiring Committee, and we finally did find someone that we are all very excited to join us.
But it is tough to envision a fifth person. We have been a tight group of four, knowing each other quite well. We can anticipate how each reacts and we have the bonds to both care about the others while also being free to oppose one another.
I have confidence in the person we hired, but it will take time to adjust.
We also hired a professional cleaner for bi-weekly cleanings. This has also been an adjustment.
Development
I have found this year to be difficult to work on my projects. I have added some to literate programming. I entered this winter break with the intention of redoing it, using Promises or perhaps Observables. But on looking at the options, I realized I love my Event-When paradigm. So I have spent the vacation trying to improve that, which is still a work in progress, but I am pretty happy with some of the innovations. It strikes me as the mental model that works well for me: events happen, stuff reacts to it. This is a bit silly in terms of scientific or mathematical computations (maybe), but for user interaction stuff, it is perfect. Even in the realm of math and science, events can be a way to break problems into separate computations.
My goals are to finish the Event-When rewrite, incorporate that into Literate-Programming and update all of that. With luck, I could get that done by May.
Once that is done, or perhaps concurrently, I intend to finally get my own blog system going and MathPebbles. So much to do and I still need to do A&I internal web stuff.
I am captivated by the ideas of mathematics and physics. I have been taking breaks from programming this vacation and retreating to reading mathematics. There is so much to explore and understand. This is what I hope to bring to MathPebbles. I think one idea for the site is to thread some pebbles together as a kind of companion to some good math books. I used to think of writing a math book, but there are plenty of those in existence. What is needed is a platform for exploring mathematics in a way that is most helpful to those learning. I absolutely love GeoGebra, WolframAlpha, Desmos, but they all strike me as giving answers while skipping much of the journey. I want to remove the burden of the manual computations, but facilitate stepping through the process rather than shortcutting it.
Family
Family has been good. My daughter is growing up fast. While only six, she seems much older. She has just lost her two front teeth. She is into Legos this year, working diligently in following the instructions of the sets. While I always enjoyed the free form method, I have to admit it is pretty cool to see the constructions she makes.
My parents are definitely getting older. We have had some conversations in trying to prepare for the inevitable, but I get the sense that when disaster finally strikes, I will be completely unprepared. I can't help but continue to think that our society is most failing the young and the old. Our lack of neighborly community, shall we say, hurts them the most.
I do worry that I spend too much time working on my projects when I should spend more time with my daughter and my parents.
My wife is going through her own journey. The new year may see some significant changes to our lives as she takes on a new direction.
Future
I am hoping this year will be pretty stable in terms of my jobs, devices, and time usage. My hope is to get MathPebbles going full blast along with finishing up Literate Programming and Event When. There are some internal projects at A&I to do as well as the RPG to run.
Each year, I hope to get further into my many projects. There are books and other projects I want to do, but I think the biggest desire is MathPebbles. So let's hope this is the year for that!
Sunday will be a day to declutter, clean, and refocus each week on the upcoming week. Discipline is the call to action.
