Part One of Miller Morales Mechanic Shop

Summary: Something is wrong with your car. What, exactly? You have no clue. So you bring it in to some professionals- who also have a toddler running around the shop.

A/N: WELCOME TO PART ONE EVERYONE! This is such a cute AU and I’m BEYOND excited to start sharing it with you all! I don’t know how many parts this will be or anything but I can’t wait to take it and run with it.

Marisol Morales behaves for very few people. One of those is Ben Miller. Unfortunately, she has decided to break her own rules today.

Frankie loves summer. He loves his little girl playing outside in her baby pool, taking her for walks around the neighborhood with their three-legged dog, all of the fun parts. The hard part is when the nanny goes on a vacation and Mari has to come to work with him.

Benny and Frankie, ever since the chaos that was the Lorea mission, run a small mechanic shop together. Miller Morales Mechanic Shop isn’t necessarily the busiest place in town, but they make enough to get by and have some disposable income too. Mari loves to hang around the shop with her daddy and uncle. She’s there more than Frankie would like, but he supposes it’s not the worst thing in the world. When Frankie and Jules split and Frankie won full custody, he’d hoped a nanny would take care of most everything when Mari is home all day in summer. Sadly, he was in for a rude awakening when no Mary Poppins showed up on his doorstep.

It’s normally not too bad; Benny hung the moon in Mari’s eyes. If she won’t do something for her daddy, which is still somewhat rare, she’ll always do it for her Uncle Benny. That makes the day run much smoother. Mari has a whole host of quiet-time activities and toys to play with, and the men generally trade off periods of either working on the cars or being with the little girl.

Her favorite activities at the shop include drawing on the concrete with thick sticks of chalk and playing with her toy helicopters and planes. Benny insists tanks are cooler, but Mari prefers flying her Polly Pockets in the chopper, running through the garage and making flight noises. She’s a smart little thing; for her age, she’s picked up big words and can make sentences out of three words, which is quite a stretch for a baby just over two years of age. She calls for Benny and Daddy and knows the names of his tools: wench, scu-dwive, and her favorite, win-seeled wipe fwuid. She loves to babble at customers while they get their oil changed.

Being shit with cars is no fun. It only increases the anxiety when some light flashes on your dashboard. The lights can mean so many things that you find it ridiculous; “check engine”? Check it for what? To save yourself the anxiety, you find your nearest mechanic and pay them to deal with it.

Today, as you pull over into a gas station, you check your phone and find that the nearest shop is a place you haven’t heard of. It must be new. Miller Morales Mechanic Shop, 0.6 miles away. The name implies something more local and homegrown. You’re more than willing to support a place like that, so you start up the engine, pray you don’t explode, and make your way over to the shop.

It’s nearby, like the map indicated. The outside is a quaint little place, tucked in a strip mall next to a coffee shop, a dentist, and an insurance agency. The three car bays are empty, and knowing next to nothing about how these shops work, you pull inside and park your car, letting it run as you wait for an employee. The bell dinged to let them know you were here, so you stay patient and listen idly to the hum of the talk radio show from your car’s speakers.

After a minute or two pass, you realize that maybe this wasn’t the right place to be. Maybe you were supposed to go in the front or something. Concluding that you probably aren’t where you’re supposed to be, you turn off the car and get out only to be greeted by the sound of buzzing lips.

You can hear a baby’s voice, mimicking some kind of vehicle’s sound, and for a second you’re worried this place must have you hearing things. Then, from a swinging door to the front comes a little girl, running and babbling to herself about her toy helicopter.

She has a head full of dark brown curls, tied back into two puffs with pink scrunchies, and matching pink leggings and a t-shirt far too big for her, the back emblazoned with the shop’s logo. She’s barefoot, tiny feet slapping against the cold cement.

“I told you I had to piss, Fish!” A man’s voice shouts from one end of the garage.

“No you didn’t, dipshit!” Another man shouts back. Being caught in the middle of their argument is quite comical, if you’re being honest with yourself. “She’s fucking two! You can’t leave her alone like that, man!”

The first voice is matched to a person as a tall blonde man emerges from the customer service side of the shop. “Marisol Morales, come here,” he insists sternly as he rolls up the sleeves of his jumpsuit. “Come on, you’re gonna trip.” Ben is embroidered on a patch over his heart.

She pouts at him before stumbling forward and continuing to run, stopping as she sees you and looking up in confusion. Her lower lip sticks out in a pout as her eyes scan your face, as if she’s trying to remember if she knows who you are. “Hi,” she finally concedes as you bend to her level.

“Hi there,” you smile and hold out a hand. “What’s your name?” You pick her up, holding her on your hip so that she doesn’t trip, like Ben so desperately feared.

The second, unknown voice shouts for the little girl again before boots clunk on concrete up to you, rounding your car and stopping. This must be the girl’s father, you realize, as you rake your eyes up his body. He wears the same navy blue jumpsuit as the other man, though it’s unsnapped over his chest, exposing the white t-shirt beneath. The patch on his chest reads Catfish. He wears a ball cap and warm brown curls peek out from under it. He has scruff and a hooked nose that perfectly matches the one on the little girl. “I Mari,” she introduces herself proudly.

“Hey, leave her alone, Mar,” the man shakes his head as he hoists her up to hold her on his hip. “I’m so sorry about that,” he says with an embarrassed smile, showing a dimple beneath the scruff on his chin.

“No, it’s not a problem,” you laugh then set her down and tell the little girl your name. “Aren’t you just the cutest?” You chuckle as she looks at you. She blushes and buries her face in the man’s chest, giggling shyly.

He looks down at the little girl then up at you again. “Well, uh, hi. I’m Frankie, and you’ve met Mari already.”

“Your daughter?” you ask as you look at the pudgy little girl, who now stares at you in awe.

Frankie nods and adjusts his ball cap, pushing his hair back with it. “Yep. Our nanny is on vacation, so she gets to hang out around here,” he chuckles and kisses her head, setting her down. “Go see Benny, yeah?” He asks her. She happily waddles off towards the blonde man, who gives you a wave then heads into the back. “What brings you in?”

“Would you laugh if I told you I don’t really know?” You admit with a shy smile. “My check engine light came on while I was on the highway. I don’t know the first thing about cars, so I was hoping you’d figure out what that meant.”

“Nah, no laughing here,” he nods and gives you a genuine smile before looking over at your car. “Shouldn’t be too much of a problem. I’ll have you pop the hood for me and I’ll give it a look?” He asks.

“That would be great. Thank you,” you tell him, the desperation for his help in your voice. Now that you get the chance to really look at him, he’s quite attractive. His eyes are deep set and a beautiful brown, and they crinkle when he smiles. Facial expressions only accentuate the lines in his face, but he’s certainly not old. His eyes still hold his youth.

“No problem.” He leads you to the car and you pop the hood open before getting out. “Could I take your keys?” he asks you. “Just so I can turn it on and off and all that good stuff.”

“Yeah, of course,” you nod frantically and hand them over to him. “I’ll… be in the waiting room?”

“That’s how we usually do it,” he chuckles as he takes the keys from you. “Just shout for Benny if Mari annoys you again.”

That makes you frown. “She’s not annoying at all. She’s adorable,” you smile as you look over your shoulder and see her and the blonde man playing together.

“The two aren’t mutually exclusive,” he laughs and points his wrench at you as he walks to the hood of the car.

Shaking your head, you can’t help but laugh as you head back to the waiting room. You walk in and Mari perks up, turning to look at you. “Hi! Playing helicopter,” she tells you in her stunted speech as she holds up the toy.

“You sure are,” you nod and sit next to her. “Can I play?” You ask, looking up at Benny, silently asking him the question too.

He nods and Mari squeals happily. “Friend!” She shrieks and hands you another helicopter. “Go pew pew, okay?” She drags them across the toy mat like they’re cars, and you follow suit.

“Okay,” you laugh. Looking up at the blonde man, you extend a smile his way and introduce yourself. He’s busy repairing a Barbie dollhouse with a screwdriver.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Ben, Benny, whatever you wanna call me.”

Driving your helicopter around the ground, following Mari’s lead, you chuckle. “No preference?”

“Fish calls me Benny.”

“Fish?” You ask and tip your head.

“Frankie, whatever. We’re buddies from the service. His code name was Catfish,” the man explains with a shrug, testing the hinges of the plastic door.

That makes you smile down at Frankie’s daughter. “Really, just buddies? Could’ve sworn you’d be brothers,” you tease the blonde, blue-eyed man. “Does Frankie know how to do his daughter’s hair?” You ask and fiddle with her two pigtails.

“Yes, he does,” Frankie insists as he walks out to the front, cleaning a wrench. “But just barely.”

You look up at him, embarrassed. “Her pigtails just look a little messy. Then again, she was running around like crazy,” you laugh and watch her rush over to Frankie, insisting he pick her up.

Bending down to grab her, Frankie groans at the ache in his joints. “She was. I could use some pointers, if you’ve got ‘em.”

“Of course,” you nod and stand too, brushing the dust from the concrete floor off on your pants. “What’s the verdict on the car?” You ask.

Frankie turned, watching as Benny walks out to the shop, but he turns back to face you. “Oh, right. The engine was misfiring, and unburned fuel was being put into the exhaust system, and that damaged the catalytic converter.”

You nod as you listen to him, really staring at his face more than anything. He’s just so damn pretty, you note as you admire the curve of his nose, his slightly sunken and dark eyes. His lips look beautiful and soft, even though they seem a little chapped. When he stops talking, it takes you a second to process it. “I don’t know what that means,” you admit with a shy smile. “I told you. I don’t know shit about cars,” you laugh, playing it off like you were lost when you were really lost in his eyes.

He shakes his head and laughs, bouncing Mari on his hip. “Your car is gonna need some work. Couple hours,” he shrugs. “If Benny and I get to working on it together, an hour and a half, maybe?” He admits.

“Yeah, that’s great. I can watch Mari,” you offer.

Frankie would never be this trusting normally. You’re a straight-up stranger, but your demeanor is good enough for him. Besides, you’re right here. He can check on the two of you every so often, and Mari seems to love you. “That would be great,” he smiles. “You really don’t have to.”

“No, I have nothing better to do,” you chuckle and look at the little girl. “You wanna play?”

Mari nods excitedly and Frankie sets her down. She rushes back to her toy mat and you watch her go. “Thank you, again, for fixing all this.”

“Just doing my job,” he nods. This time, it’s his turn to admire you. He stares at your face, examining the curves and angles that make you up. Your eyes are kind and warm as they follow the little girl, and he can see that he’s making a good choice here.

When you sit down, Mari comes and sits cross-legged across from you. “What are we gonna play?” You ask her, looking at her wide variety of toys. Her pile includes dinosaurs, Matchbox cars, lots of toy helicopters and planes, Barbie dolls, and a plastic tea set.

“Tea party!” She says and hands you a tiny plastic cup and a felt muffin.

“Oh my goodness,” you gasp in a fake accent. “How delightful!”

Frankie peeks over his shoulder at the two of you. He could really get used to that sight.

CHAPTER FOUR: FOUND

Frank’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. He let out a long huff before slapping the dashboard, his eyes coming back into focus, the sight of the car hood crumpled against a guard rail jolting him into sobriety. Turning his head, he followed the tire marks to the center of the road, where the other car had swerved. He had just enough room to squeeze himself out the door, after which he attempted to get the other driver’s attention with a concerned wave. No response.

Walking forward, squinting in the glare of the headlights, the tightness in his chest subsided when he saw the woman behind the wheel, unhurt and breathing heavily. She was clearly just as shaken up as he was. With a light tap of a knuckle against the glass, he encouraged her to open the window. Their eyes met. There was no anger in them, only the softness that comes before an apology. Frank beat her to the punch.

“Fuck, I’m so sorry. Are you okay?” He scratched the back of his neck nervously.

“I’m fine. I’m sorry too, I should’ve noticed you sooner.”

“You had your lights on. I didn’t. It’s my fault. Do you want me to call an ambulance? I wanna do something.” There was a hint of panic in his tone.

“It’s fine, really. I appreciate it, though.” She gave him a small smile and Frank stepped back as she got out the car.

“At the very least I should give you my details, y’know, for insurance purposes.” He fumbled in his pockets for a non-existent pen. Then he pulled out his phone.

“No problem.” The woman unlocked her phone, pulling up her contacts. “My house isn’t too far from here so I guess it could have been worse, right? We’re not stranded out in the middle of nowhere.”

“I guess you’re right,” Frank shook his head lightly in agreement “so what name am I putting in here?”

“Lucy Montgomery.”

Frank tapped out her name and then shook her hand. “Frank Adler. If you need someone to look at the car, I’m actually a mechanic – I could save you a couple hundred bucks.”

Lucy tilted her head skeptically. “If I had a couple hundred bucks for every time a guy said something like that…”

“It’s true, I swear. Look,” Frank scrolled through pictures of his workshop until he reached a picture of the Celestia “this is what I’m currently working on.”

Lucy crossed her arms and scrunched her lips. “Okay, I’ll admit that’s kinda impressive. Do you do this all by yourself?”

“Yeah. This one’s for a dentist in Coral Gables, so if you don’t want me to fix up your car I’ll happily pay for everything.” He was half-joking.

“Nice to see chivalry isn’t dead.” Lucy quipped. “So how come you were out here in the dark anyway?”

Frank was leaning against the roof of Lucy’s car, one hand on his hip. “My niece’s cat went missing. Then she did too. I’ve been out looking for both of them all day.”

“Oh shit, I’m sorry. Kids are impulsive like that aren’t they?”

“You got that right. Mary’s obsessed with Fred. He’s the only friend she’s got.”

“Anything I can do to help?”

“I don’t wanna put this on you-“ he started, but Lucy cut in.

“No, you offered to help me, so I’m doing the same. Do you have a picture of her?”

Frank nodded, tilting the phone towards Lucy. “She’s a real smart kid. I don’t think she’s lost, just angry.”

“I get that. I’ll keep a lookout and let you know if I see anything.”

“Thanks.” Frank pushed off the side of the car and moved around to the hood. “Y’know I could look at this right now. Probably get you back on the road before FDOT. And I’m offering friends discount…” he wiggled his eyebrows playfully.

“What is that exactly?”

“Usually half off. But for you, no charge. This time anyway.”

“This time? Are you planning on crashing into me again?”

“Not at all. I just mean I can do a better job for less, if you want me to.”

“Huh,” Lucy clicked her tongue “well if you say we’re friends, then I can’t pass it up.”

“For insurance purposes, obviously.”

“Obviously.”

They grinned at each other, then Frank popped the hood and began his inspection.

“You got somebody you can call at home? Just in case I’ve gotta take this into the shop.”

“I’ll figure it out. It looks like you know what you’re doing, so I’m not worried about that right now.”

“So you trust a stranger?” Frank feigned shock.

“I thought we were friends? Friends trust each other.”

“Good to hear.” He paced along the side and crouched to inspect a dent near one of the tail lights. “Looks like we caught each other at the back here. I can bang that right out. No problem. What d’ya say? It’s the least I can do.”

Lucy’s eyes darted from the road to Frank. “The Road Ranger’s here. I think he’s gonna want to take care of it.”

Unbeknownst to Frank, Lucy had called roadside assistance the moment the accident had happened. They rolled up alongside a police cruiser, and both the Road Ranger and an officer walked over. They stopped at Frank’s car first. Frank got up and headed over, ready to negotiate. But there are only so many times the line ‘it’s okay, I’m a mechanic’ can get you out of trouble. Of the two of them, Frank’s car was the only one that wasn’t fit for the road. He was the one who had to find another way home.

As his car was getting inspected, he dialed, first tapping out a text to a friend who took no time at all to offer to take care of Frank’s car. For now, there was no more he could do.

“Hey Roberta, got into a bit of trouble. Can you come pick me up?”

Roberta didn’t ask what kind of trouble he meant. She agreed right away.

Perched on the guard rail, Frank tossed his phone back and forth in his hands as he waited. He cast a glance over at Lucy, who was giving a statement about the accident. It surprised Frank how quickly she walked away. He hoped she hadn’t decided to take the blame.

“Are you sure you don’t wanna ride with us?”

“Us?” Lucy’s eyes narrowed curiously.

“My neighbor Roberta. She looks after Mary a lot. She’s great. I don’t know what I’d do without her sometimes.”

“That’s so nice, I’m glad there’s someone you can call on for support. It must be tough being just the two of you.”

Frank sighed. “It can be. But Mary’s like a little old woman in a kid’s body. She’s so wise, resilient, Diane did a great job bringing her up.” There was a tinge of melancholy in his voice.

Lucy sat beside him. “Diane?” She attempted to meet his gaze. “Oh, God, I shouldn’t-” she stuttered “if I’ve overstepped….you don’t have to talk about it.”

Frank shook his head. “No, it’s okay. Diane was my sister. She died.” This was all he could bring himself to say. Lucy wasn’t prying, but the wound left by Frank’s grief was still too fresh, and a sharp pang of sadness shot through him at the thought of exposing it. He slipped his phone back into his pocket and wrung his hands together, head bowed a little.

“I’m so sorry. Mary sounds like a wonderful little girl, so I imagine Diane was just as wonderful.” Lucy laid a hand on Frank’s shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze.

“She was.”

Their eyes finally met. They sat in comfortable silence for a few long minutes before the glare of headlights grew brighter. Roberta pulled up and Frank stood, eyes flitting over to the Road Ranger.

“I guess this is you?” Lucy gestured to the car and then shoved her hands in her pockets as the evening breeze tickled her exposed skin.

“Last chance if you want a ride.”

She hesitated for a moment and then turned on her heels. “Let me go talk to the Road Ranger. I’ll be back in a minute.”

Roberta’s window slid down. “I went out for a drive to the beach and found a pearl…” Roberta pointed to the back seat.

Frank leaned in and saw Mary, slumped and frowning. He pushed back, laid his head on the cool window frame and muttered “Thank fuck.”

For once, Mary didn’t chastise Frank and demand a dollar. She sat up straight, gripping the top of Roberta’s seat as Lucy approached the car.

Frank opened the passenger door, stretching across to open the other for Lucy.

“This had better be a real good story, kiddo.”

“I don’t wanna talk about it anymore.” Mary stared absently through the window at the trees that billowed softly in the wind. “Can we just go home?”

“We sure can. We just have to drop this lady home first.” Frank adjusted the overhead mirror to give Lucy a reassuring smile. She smiled back and adjusted her seat belt.

Mary scanned her face. “Did you hit Uncle Frank’s car or did he hit you?”

Roberta stifled a laugh.

“Neither. We both swerved. Unfortunately Frank was the one who took a hit, but we’re fine.”

Roberta pressed her lips into a concerned line. “I think you should both get checked out at the hospital. Don’t wanna take any chances.”

“If anything changes, I’ll go there tomorrow.” Frank patted Roberta’s hand. “Don’t worry about it.”

“I’m not hurt, just a little shaken up. I’ll be fine after I’ve rested.” Lucy reassured her.

“If you’re sure…” Roberta gave them both a stern look. She was acting like a mother again. “Where am I taking you?”

“I live over on Jackson. It’s not too far, just past the library.”

“Uh-oh, she said library.” Roberta quipped, noticing the way Mary perked up a little. “This one loves books.”

“Y’know,” Lucy looked across at Mary “I work at the library, so if you wanna stop by sometime I can recommend some really cool books.” She caught Frank’s eye in the mirror. “We have a kids group every Saturday.”

Mary winced at the word. “I’m not a kid. I’m just me.”

“Hey, watch your tone,” Roberta admonished “this lady’s being nice.”

“Sorry.” Mary mumbled.

“It’s okay.” Lucy twisted slightly to face her. “I get it, I’m a stranger, it’s weird. You don’t have to come if you don’t want to.”

“It’s a nice thought, so thank you.” Frank reached over to tap Mary’s leg. “Mary, what do you say?”

“Thank you.”

“You’re very welcome. And it’s nice to meet the girl I’ve heard so much about.”

Mary cocked her head. “Really?”

“Yeah, Frank told me all about how awesome you are – and brave – you must really love your cat to go out looking for him for days on end like that.”

“Uncle Frank told you about Fred?”

“He did. Wanna tell me a little more about him?”

“He only has one eye and he’s my best friend.” Mary said matter-of-factly. Frank coughed loudly. “Okay, Roberta and Uncle Frank are pretty cool too I guess.”

“Seems like it.” Lucy chuckled. The library passed them by and Lucy directed Roberta down Jackson Road. “Alrighty, this is me. Thank you so much for doing this.”

“No problem.” Frank and Roberta said in unison.

“It was nice meeting you, Mary. And you too, Roberta.” She got out and proffered a hand. “If I need any help with the car I’ll be sure to give you a call.”

With a brief handshake and a bright wave, the hectic night was finally over.

New Years Meme 2020

I used to journal more, and stuff like this is really nice to look back on, because I have terrible memory for life stuff or the passage of time. So here, for future me.

1. What did you do in 2020 that you’d never done before? Uhhhh wear a mask to the grocery store? This was not a groundbreaking year for new experiences.

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions and will you make more for next year? I didn't have any. I don't make any. I mean, sometimes I make them in the vague "I want to focus on this in the future", but I'll already have forgotten by March, like I don't really PLAN my life in such a way. I just have goals that aren't tied to specific points in time. You get there when you get there, and you choose what you want to prioritise.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? No, but my brother got married, which was very exciting because he's 40 and has never had a girlfriend who he considered important enough for me to meet. (And my sister-in-law is delightful.)

4. Did anyone close to you die? My (half-)brother's dad died a few weeks ago (cancer), but I didn't really know him, so I wouldn't say he was close to me. I did spend almost a week at my brother's place to be there for him though. And honestly, I kept thinking about how my mom's dead this year, because in a way I'm glad we didn't have to deal with this year together. She already died from respitory failure, had poor impulse control and sense of safety, and I would've been CONSTANTLY worried about her.

5. What countries did you visit? I was gonna go to Malaysia (for my brother's wedding celebration), but that didn't happen. (Flatmates were gonna go to Japan.) So. Yeah. Home country all the way.

6. What would you like to have in 2021 that you lacked in 2020? A driving force to move forward in my life?

7. What date from 2020 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? I don't think... that there is one specific day? I guess the US election? Despite me being Norwegian, it's still fairly historic.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? /stares blankly at the wall I did do some nice art pieces? I coped? I managed to have good times and make friends despite everything else.

9. What was your biggest failure? I dropped out of two classes specifically because I couldn't do remote learning and self-structured study (BECAUSE ADHD YO), even though it wasn't even that HARD subjects, which was very frustrating. It hasn't set my study plan back, thankfully, but it still felt like a waste.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Only mental. And thankfully not as bad as it could've been, but hell yeah there was some strong anxiety in there.

11. What was the best thing you bought? I've bought some great video games this year. Animal Crossing brought 250 hours of fun, Hades brought 100 hours so far. Good investments.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? // 13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? Both of these are related to pandemic behavior so I think you can guess.

14. Where did most of your money go? Entertainment? Also, god, I spent so much money on theatre tickets that are now just vouchers for non-specific future performances. I'll get my money's worth eventually, but right now it's hundres of dollars worth just sitting in vouchers. OH, and, digital D&D books.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? I had tickets for Chess. Several tickets, for multiple performances. STILL HAVEN'T SEEN THIS PRODUCTION THOUGH. But they're still doing it so hopefully it will still happen.

16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2020? Not sure I have any specific ones, actually. No iconic music.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: Last year I was feeling very accomplished. I was challenging myself, had befriended lots of classmates, had gotten through some stuff I was quite proud of managing. This year has been... not that. But on the other hand, I'm not as exhausted from school stuff, and I'm ready to actually go places and try to do things, as opposed to just wanting a month long nap.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of? General life maintainance stuff. Not just school work, but like, focus more on money sensibility and try to get on disability, go to the dentist, work with my doctor more... All of that got a little bit just... postponed indefinitely.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of? Uh, can't think of any notable negative behaviour. It's mostly stuff I didn't do. Like, I had some bad anxiety in the spring, but honestly I think I did an appropriate amount of worrying.

20. How will you be spending Christmas? Had my first christmas with my flatmates (whom I love very much), and had my dad over as well. It was very lovely, and socially way less draining than usual.

22. Did you fall in love in 2020? lmao I'm aromantic

23. How many one-night stands? lmao I'm asexual

24. What was your favorite TV program? There were a few this year! Good Omens, The Queen's Gambit, Julie and the Phantoms, Avenue 5. There were more I watched and enjoyed, but I think those stand out the most. Also, does Critical Role count? OH, The Baby Sitters Club! A lot of good stuff.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Nah. I don't hate a lot of people.

26. What was the best book you read? Don't think I read anything notable this year. Don't read a lot of books, I prefer to consume stories in other media.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery? Julie and the Phantoms. Not because the music is astounding or anything, but it was very feel-good and fun. Don't think I had a lot of new music.

28. What did you want and get? D&D campaigns? Have gotten really invested in one of them in particular, it's delightful.

29. What was your favorite film of this year? Hmmm. The only one that stands out was The Old Guard. I watch more series than films. 2 hours isn't long enough for me to get properly invested AND satisfied.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I turned 33 and I don't know that I did anything special. I think I just chilled? Flatmates made me a nice breakfast!

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? Having the energy for essays/exams, probably. Just feeling like I actually had some accomplishments. OR LIKE. If Norway did like New Zealand and just wiped the virus out.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2020? Pyjamas. Occasionally 'apocalypse chic'.

34. What kept you sane? My flatmates and my dad. Reliable social interaction with people I care about.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Matthew McNulty, which applies to every single year. But this year I started both a gallery website and a discord server for him, so it was a particularly good year for him. ��(Special mention to Paul Spera, who I finally talked to face-to-face, through Zoom, but still.) Also I'm using 'fancy' platonically.

36. What political issue stirred you the most? Ha aha hah all of them, oh god. BLM, probably, though. That was when I still had the energy to get invested.

37. Who did you miss? So many people. Like, come on. I don't know that it was even specific people so much just... being in a group? Like, my choir gang?

38. Who was the best new person you met? Met a guy I ended up playing a LOT of board games with. We haven't really talked in a few months now tho. And there's a friend I didn't MEET this year, but I really connected with, who's also now my DM, which was really nice.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2020: It's not necessarily new knowledge, but this year has really driven home the need for both community solidarity and governmental support/leadership.

Swangs braces headcanon

I’m sorry this isn’t exactly what you asked for but I hope it’s alright @cathylambre It got a bit long so most of it’s under the cut

If you asked Sweet Pea about braces now he’d either lie and say his teeth were always that perfect or emphatically rant about how he had braces for ‘like 8 years’ and that he hates them. 

Truth is, he had them for about a year and a half and was a pain in the ass the whole time.

It started well. He was 13 when he found out he was getting them and Fangs had to listen to him excitedly saying “it’s gonna be like knuckle dusters for my teeth”  about thirty times in the week leading up to the appointment.

Then he actually gets them. He’s fine, around most of the serpents, saving face Fangs is sure but the moment it’s just them, hanging out watching old films on the beat up tv at Sweet Pea’s he won’t stop bitching. “It feels fucking weird, you know I can’t chew gum anymore? I have to use a fucking wire brush to get shit out of my teeth. I can’t drink soda Fangs! Or OJ.  Man, they’re slicing my gums up.”

The last one is probably the most frustrating because no matter how much Fangs tries to convince him to get some wax for them Sweet Pea refuses. “I’m not a pussy, I don’t need it.”

It takes Fangs four days to take it into his own hands and go get some wax from the dentist for him. but then when he gives it to Sweet Pea he still doesn’t use it, so he recruits Toni and some other younger serpents to pin him down and hold his mouth open while Fangs coat his braces in the no doubt foul tasting wax. When they finally let him go Sweet Pea goes to bitch before he realizes how good it feels to not have his mouth being sliced to pieces and bitterly snatches the rest of the sticks from Fangs.

For a while, thing are fine again. Sweet Pea still bitches about not being able to chew gum or eat apples and the stupidly long way he’s forced to brush his teeth. Occasionally conversations will come to an abrupt halt when he chokes on a bit of wax that had dislodged itself from the metal.  Then he has his next appointment and they get tightened.

and Sweet Pea is in unfucking bearable agony. He’s been punched, kicked, broken bones and once even lightly stabbed but none of that compared to the torment of tightened braces.

He can’t put the wax on because touching his teeth hurts, breathing hurts, his freaking jaw hurts and it’s just a pain in the ass. Every time he tries to eat, even overcooked mac and cheese it leaves fire dancing through his mouth and his eyes tearing up despite him wishing they wouldn’t.

At first, it’s hilarious to Fangs. The ‘oh so powerful now fourteen-year-old’ Pea being brought down by some wire acting like an overdramatic man baby. and then he sees Sweet Pea trying to eat a bit of sponge cake and the way tears flood his eyes and he tosses it away with a glare and refuses to try and eat anything for the rest of the day and then he’s worried because surely that can’t be normal. When there’s food to be eaten Sweet Pea will always happily inhale enough for a small army if given the chance.

After Sweet Pea actually admits that it feels like someone has taken a jackhammer to each and every tooth it’s not uncommon for Fangs to appear with jello cups or a thermos full of soup and force them on the grumpy looking Sweet Pea

It takes Sweet Pea two months to say ‘fuck it’ to the no apples or gum rule. Sweet peas gums bleed for three days even with the wax before the orthodontist can see him to fix the wires the apple broke. (The asshole also tightens them again, Fangs says it serves him right but pulls out a jello cup like a magician). Fangs laughs so hard he cries when Sweets tries gum though. IT’s fine, at first, until it gets curled around the wire and Sweet Pea spends over an hour in the bathroom with his stupid wire brush desperately trying to pick it out while Fangs howls in the corner and tries to take photos.

He does, eventually prove the ‘braces are like tooth knuckle dusters’ ideology. 

It’s about eight months into having braces, of only really feeling comfortable actually smiling at Fangs who doesn’t mock him for his metal mouth and gives him soft food when his teeth hurt and generally taking care of him, when an older kid from school, and a ghoulie at that, starts giving Fangs shit about being sweet pea’s wife. That alone they both could ignore, sure, Sweet Pea would like to punch the guy but Fangs was giving him the ‘You do something stupid and I’ll steal all your jello when you get those things tightened’ look. But then the kid grabs Fangs hard enough to make him wince and Sweet Pea’s swinging before he can think it through.

They’re bigger, older, stronger and have more of them to the few baby serpents so the fight isn’t exactly going their way and Sweet Pea gets pinned and just goes for a bite because why not. 

The amount of blood is actually quite impressive, the fact some of it is in Sweet Pea’s mouth is not but it’s enough to get the ghoulie screaming, hand clutching his arm as blood spilt between his fingers and the others to retreat with one look at the crazed looking sweet pea, blood that’s definitely not his own spilling past his lips.

Sweet Pea gets shit for it. Both from the older serpents for starting a fight with the ghoulies and from people at school who bump into fangs and mutter “Careful, his wife might claw your eyes out.”

When he gets to chose a color for the brackets he chooses green ‘It’s like a snake’ Fangs smiles through it and tries not to let it show on his face that it just looks like sweet pea has a ton of spinach stuck n the braces.

Toni holds no such reservations. Sweet Pea makes it his personal vendetta to piss her off by getting more and more ridiculous shades of green whenever he’s allowed to change color.

Sometimes when Sweet Pea gets them tightened and Fangs is over he’ll let him lay his head in his lap and just run his hands through his hair while Sweet Pea bitches about the ache in his teeth and gorges himself on jello.

When Fangs is mad at him he’ll make a point of loudly chewing gum next to him. He once got everyone in the white wyrm to eat an apple the moment Sweet Pea walked in when he’d fallen asleep before texting Fangs that he was home safe after a fight at school. 

Sweet Pea used to have a habit on chewing the collars on his shirts while watching movies, that stopped when he somehow managed to get his braces caught in the top and Fangs had to cut the shirt to free him.

He LOVES getting elastic bands for his braces though. Fangs hates it. Sweet Pea will just sit with his mouth gaping open flicking at the elastic. He said he was making music, Fangs just thinks he’s spraying everyone with his spit, Toni agrees with Fangs. Swee Pea just keeps twanging away until Fangs wrestles him to the floor and yanks the dumb elastics out of his mouth because “we're trying to fucking eat dude.”

Fangs isn’t so worried about sharing spit when it comes to their first kiss. Probably because they don’t really get that far. 

Their first kiss is a disaster. Not in the way of they don’t enjoy it, it’s strange, sure, neither of them have done it that much. Sweet Pea especially having looked like the terminator got his mouth pregnant for the past year and four months. But it’s nice, at least, it’s nice when sweet peas leaning in, all anxious enthusiasm and a voice in his head screaming ‘don’t screw up your friendship just because you may or may not be falling n love with your best friend’ and Fangs is leaning in as well, breath shaky and nervous and Sweet Pea knows he’s going to taste like the strawberry Jello they just ate and it’s going to be AWESOME because Fangs is leaning in too! 

And then they both dive forwards their lips actually meet and ..well.It does taste like strawberry for all of a second until Sweet pea’s braces are cutting Fangs lips from where he’d leaned into it a ‘bit’ too enthusiastically and it tastes like blood and Fangs is swearing and Sweet Pea’s reminded from the bump that he got his braces tightened one last time and his teeth are in agony over the small collision and they’re both of the floor clutching their respective injuries.

They laugh about it, once Fangs has cleaned the blood up and Sweet Pea’s teeth have returned to a steady level of agonizing pain rather than the throbbing ache it was before. Fangs still pressed another kiss to his lips, feather light and thankfully no one gets hurt even though there’s a bit of his blood smeared on Sweet pea’s lips.

When Sweet Pea gets them removed he comes home to find a freaking bushel of apples and toffee and gum and fucking cola and ignores it all in favor kissing Fangs now that he can’t accidentally cut him with the metal in his mouth.

It’s still a bit unsure and awkward and kind of wet but they’re getting better and it leaves Sweet Pea grinning with his newly freed teeth. 

He spends the next two weeks complaining that his teeth feel too big for his 

Fangs has a small scar on his upper lip from their first kiss and Sweet Pea will forever be weirdly proud of giving it to him.

"What's Up You Guys It's Me, Bdenbrough!" - Quarry Vlog ft. MY FRIENDS

Bill looks down at himself in the camera viewfinder, chewing his lip anxiously before he even turns it on. He clicks the on button, toying with the straps of his swimsuit top.

"Hey g-guys! It's m-me, bdenbrough," he says with a small smile, pushing his ponytailed hair off his shoulder to hang down his back instead. "Today I'm d-doing a vl-vl-vlog!" He announces, still looking a little uncomfortable filming this intro.

"You're g-going to m-meet my friends, we're gonna sw-swim at the quarry today," he explains, picking up the camera to hold it up in line with his face.

"S-sorry for not u-uploading for s-so long, m-my parents d-don't know ab-bout m-my channel and they're o-out today. They're t-taking Georgie t-to the dentist, he's s-such a l-little booger," Bill chuckles, smirking playfully for the camera.

He starts walking down the stairs, huffing right into the camera unprofessionally. He reaches the bottom slipping on his pink flip flops that his mom had purchased for him at the local Payless shoe store.

He smiles to the camera. "N-now for the walk t-to the quarry," he smiles, turning the camera clumsily away from his face to the view ahead of him, planning hopefully to put some music over this part.

He films past town, nearly tripping over his slightly too big sandals. His mom is all about buying them big so they'll fit for longer, though they never seem to last to the point of fitting just right before he goes through another sudden growth spurt.

He pays specific attention to filming the trees and the squirrels and sometimes zooming in far onto towns people's faces if he thought their expression was silly. He finds that filming makes everything more interesting because now he's thinking about entertaining more than just himself, which by default makes him notice more things that could be entertaining.

He finally arrives at the quarry, his frizzy curls hopefully still held back in the loose ponytail he'd rushed out before he'd left the house. He walks up, being the only one there so far. Richie probably being distracted by random small animals, Stan likely paying close attention to the cracks in the sidewalk, and Eddie's mom probably being her awful self and venting to him all the reasons he shouldn't hang out with this group of kids.

Bill settles himself on the end of the cliff's edge, filming the sparkle the sun leaves on the water. He even slips off his flip flops and sets them on the dirt ground behind himself, kicking his feet on camera, showing the audience his chipped toenail polish that he's really tried to remove but failed miserably.

He hears some talking behind him, turning quickly, stopping the camera and putting it on the ground quickly so he could explain to what seems to be Eddie and Stan what his goal is today. "H-hey guys!" He says, pushing himself to his feet to greet them.

"Nice swimsuit," Eddie teases, poking Bill's bare but fully freckled shoulder. He knows Bill isn't very feminine for what he considers a girl, them still only being around ten years old. He's always surprised to see Bill in the forced pink that he only wears when it's his only option.

Bill sticks out his tongue in response, "I'm t-taking some video t-today for my YouTube ch-channel, is th-that okay?" He asks, not wanting to post something without their permission, though he plans to edit it to show them best.

"Yeah, as long as my mother can't see it," Eddie chuckles, taking his shirt off carefully, slipping off his own sandals to be ready for the water.

"Where's the trashmouth? It's too quiet," Stan chuckles softly to himself, his sense of humor too mature for most of his friends to understand. He's a lot like his mother, quiet and sophisticated, and he makes the same jokes.

"He's probably trying to ch-chase a squirrel," Eddie giggles, covering his mouth with a cupped hand that only amplifies and muffles the sound of his childish laughter.

Stan joins in laughing, nudging Eddie with his shoulder, "God, you're an ass," he says in a hushed voice, looking around them in the irrational fear that somehow an adult could hear them.

Just then, as if he could sense he was being talked about, the unruly blonde boy pops up into the clearing, "Ya miss me?" He calls to the group, patting Eddie's bare shoulder just a little too hard in his excitement.

"Speak of t-the devil," Bill laughs to himself, pushing Richie slightly away from Eddie for his shorter friend's own good.

"Asshole!" Eddie shrieks, pushing Richie himself, having always been firey and good at defending himself despite the fact that Richie never means harm, he's just a bit too much sometimes.

Bill walks over to grab his camera quickly, hoisting it up onto his shoulder to point at his three best friends. "S-say hi to th-the camera y-you dinguses," he giggles.

Richie immediately brightens, throwing his hands up in excitement, "Who's this video for?" He asks loudly, already making faces and trying to look handsome for the camera.

"Y-youtube," Bill tells him with a sure nod, "To m-make us famous," he jokes, turning the camera to Stan and Eddie next. "Th-these are Stan and E-Eddie, they're my other fr-friends," he tells, the smile evident in his voice.

Richie grins, "Roight my fine friends," he says, patting Stan and Eddie's backs, tearing off his shirt and shoes and immediately making a mad dash for the cliff, gesturing to Bill to film him jumping down to the water below. He doesn't look as cool as he wants to, flailing and screaming loud enough for the camera to pick up.

Everyone on the ground still starts giggling madly as soon as they hear him clumsily belly flop onto the surface of the water with a low groan. They walk up carefully to look over the edge at him, Bill letting the camera view the scene as well.

"Y'g-good, Richie?" Bill calls, creasing his eyebrows when it takes a few moments for Richie to pop back up from the water.

Richie dramatically shoots up from the water with a teasing grin, "Haha! Got you!" He shouts, feeling entirely like he's the most hilarious dude of Earth for scaring them.

"Asshole!" Eddie yells, cupping his hands over his mouth to amplify his sound

"Bitch boy!" Bill yells, a usual insult of his, which is what the girls at school often calls the boys and he's eventually picked up on.

Stan is quiet, still working through the original worry, working through it as if he's in a state of grief about it, he really does care about his friends more than he lets on.

Eddie looks to his right, "You good, Stanny?" He asks softly, putting his hand on Stan's shoulder which makes him jump a little before taking a deep breath.

"Yeah, I'm fine," he says with a sweet smile back to him, patting his shoulder in return, "Ready to jump?" He asks Eddie, his own type of playful smirk taking over his face.

Bill nods to them, stepping back with the camera upon his shoulder to get the scene on camera, smiling to them when he's ready, getting them jumping right off the cliff holding hands, it's quite aesthetic if Bill would say so himself.

Next, Bill shuts off the camera and sets it down, running his own to jump down and meet the others, feeling the water engulf him, the water filling his ears, making a face to himself as he pops back up.

They all look at each other with matching grins, nearly all splashing each other all at once, erupting into childish giggles, their favorite time of summer when they can all act like kids.

They spend hours and hours going crazy in the water. They dunk each other under, not doing it to Bill though because they've been told by their parents that they shouldn't, which gives Bill free game to jump them under the water all he wants without retaliation.

They get out of the water fully sunburnt, everyone but Eddie whose mother insisted in lathering him with the strong sunscreen she could find.

They rub at their backs, cringing at the soreness and the heat, Bill walks right up to the family camera that he uses to film, making sure his hands are dry. He aims it in front of his face, "Hi again! Th-the video was sh-short but taking a camera i-in the water means trouble," he says with a shy smile, looking back at the others, "g-guys! S-say bye to the s-subscribers with m-me!" He shouts, gesturing for them to come closer.

They all gather around, they always listen to Bill, he's always been a bit of a leader, simply for how demanding he can be. The all wave, attempting to all shout 'Bye!' at once but it ends as a layered chorus of chaos.

"See y-you next time," Bill says, going to shut the camera quickly, holding it close to himself for the walk home, slipping on his shoes again before saying real goodbyes to the group.

so bez is… kind of a nutcase. he’s just… he’s that guy in the bar who seems so desirable. voice like warmed honey, a smile that could kill – but dear lord, don’t get close to him. he’s fucked in the head. and unless you’re prepared for that, friendships/relationships with him can get... pretty darn overwhelming.

he’s a host at the local radio station, so he curates the music and talks through little segments throughout the day. well, i should say night -- because the show he’s known for occurs weekdays and sunday nights from 7pm - 8am. weird hours. weird guy. so it all clicks right into place! people tune in for the music ( a lot of indie eclectic vibes ) but also his personality. bez tends to veer off-script a lot, which both aggravates and amuses his superiors. he’s basically the only reason the tiny radio station is still alive & kickin’, so what are they gonna do to him, huh? fire him and take the whole station down with that bullshit move? not likely. so bez’ll keep doing and saying whatever the hell he wants on air, thank you very much.

can he get... a mfing... cinnamon raisin waffle???  dude’s friggin’ obsessed. don’t mess with his waffles, man. waffles don’t play.

has a knack for stumbling into stupid situations. y’know how there’s two kinds of people in this world? the kinds that act upon the universe and the kinds the universe acts upon? bez is that guy in textbook math probelms who has 42 apples for no apparent reason. he’s the dude in on top of spaghetti all covered with cheese whose poor meatball fuckin’ rolled out the door. things happen to bez holmes no matter how much he might try to convince you otherwise. his whole life is just a string of varied ( and usually nonchalant/unbothered/troublingly chill ) reactions to crazy shit.

case in point:  why did the holmes family move to faulk hollow? well. their old house had like... a freakin’ meltdown. yes, the house. it swallowed their dog. and their mom. casual... house-y things. but when people ask, bez and his father like to say they just wanted to “ see the sights ”. and apparently faulk hollow was one of those.

[ tw: death, murder mentions ]   basically, faulk hollow offered a place for them to disappear, since the disappearance of bez’s mother couldn’t exactly be explained to and/or believed by police. bez’s father is wanted for her murder. so they friggin’ skrrt skrrted out of iowa and plopped down here, under the radar. “holmes” is an adopted last name.

so bez has been here since his 11th birthday! honestly, he probably earned a reputation pretty quick for being that kid who’d, like, “hey buddy!” at all the insects on the playground.  “ do you believe in magic? ” was often his best icebreaker.

so... fun fact. he accidentally inherited his dead dentist’s vintage jukebox. yes, i know how that sounds, and it’s exactly that. but dear lord, that thing has just been infinitely fucking with him since the day it showed up on his doorstep three months ago. more about that later!

an example of a normal occurrence in bez’s life: “hey. so, uh… i know we just met, and maybe this is moving fast? but i saw this keychain in walgreens and it made me think of you. so… yeah. here. tell anyone i did anything nice for you and you’re dead to me tho.”

he seems smart. he seems so cunning, you guys. like, holy shit, he makes these deep ass statements on the air and curates music that makes people feel things. but don’t be fooled. he’ll drive wearing shades at 10pm just to look cool, all while bumping 80′s glam rock from his blue ‘67 impala. he’ll do that cliché head bop at stoplights, encourage other drivers to join in.

don’t call him killian!! killian who?? his parents gave him “beelzebub” as a middle name to be funny and fuck with his mother’s father, who was a pastor. what they didn’t bank on was four-year-old bez insisting on being called by it – you can guess how well that went over with his teachers and his peers. so to appease them, he accepted the nickname “bez” and has gone mainly by that ever since. most people probably don’t know his true first name, since he goes by “bez” on the air. but close friends and trusted individuals might occasionally call him “kill” or something to that effect.

pets are not bez’s thing. every houseplant he’s had has died. succulents wilt in his presence too, and he thinks maybe at this point, it’s a running joke among plantkind because his birth name has the worldkill in it. still, even with his track record, he has a fish named nigel. nigel dislikes affection and bez. they engage in staredowns and silent mental warfare. bez often “forgets” to feed nigel or change the water in his tank, but that fish just will not die. nigel’s probably just truckin’ on to spite him.

aggressively writes the wrong date for like… 8 months following new year’s. so he finally gets it right for the final ¼, and then the cycle begins again. additionally, cannot keep the days of the week straight. he’s started a multi-song alarm campaign in an attempt to rectify this situation. bez’ll report his findings in a week. if he remembers.

one time he got pulled over for speeding back from the radio station at 7 in the morning, and you know what he did? he freakin’ offered the cop some hard shit from his flask and some of his opened bag of funions. so the two of them got tastefully buzzed in bez’s car and talked about the kardashians for two hours. and it was through that very conversation that bez learned he’d been doing a very shit job of keeping up with them.

scared of birds. yes. those things? with the wings? terrified. how dare they occupy space above his head. how dare they swoop and swerve all around. no. his neighbor in iowa had a parakeet. maybe that bird finally went missing one day, while they were on vacation. maybe it escaped. to like, the afterlife. maybe bez helped. maybe.

he’s really bad at like … taking care of himself? funions, candy, and takeout forever.  what do you mean raisin bran crunch isn’t a wholesome, well-rounded meal? you mean you’re not supposed to pour the entire carafe of syrup on your waffles every time? someone… pls fix that.

hella prone to bullshit! like… did you know aliens are real? yeah. really. hey did you check your horoscope today? what zodiac sign are you? he’ll pretend to know what zodiac he is like: hey, uh… listen .. . if your zodiac is asparagus don’t even bother being my friend… i’m a caprisun & it’s just not gonna work out. sorry.

convinced said old, stupid, 1947 jukebox in his apartment lays host to goblins. that thing shakes and quakes at odd hours. it’ll play shitty pop music that isn’t even in the dumb catalogue. sometimes it lights up when he trips over his own feet or accidentally burns his microwave popcorn. the fuckin’ thing is possessed and it’s mocking him. so, naturally, what is there to do but appease the tiny beings inside it?? he makes biweekly sacrifices to it – mainly consisting of snack foods, candies, a casual sprinkling of his own blood. y’know. casual.

super into space? honestly would love to grab sushi with an alien sometime?

uh…  he’s convinced everyone he sleeps with kind of mysteriously dies exactly 53 hours after. maybe that was inspired by like... two isolated incidents. but you can see how this is… kind of a problem, for a guy who likes to sleep around from time to time. is he a murderer? uhm, no, not exactly – but he’s grown kind of immune to the guilt at this point. he stalks obituaries a couple days after his one-night-stands, just to check. so far, it hasn’t been a 100% consistent thing, but... he’s worried. he’ll still leave the bar with you tho. ;)

he’s trying out this whole new thing of like… not going all the way? trying to save lives? but it’s really difficult and he’s losing resolve. he also can’t exactly tell his buddies, “ stop introducing me to your hot friends; if i fuck them, they’re dead. ” that probably wouldn’t go over well. he’s got enough crazy on his plate trying to appease the damn goblins.

consistently blindsided by genuinely liking other people? so if he’s into you... he’s gonna look awestruck and baffled like 99% of the time your face is within a 1-mile radius.

he’s always running his hands through his hair, which just adds to his #indiegrungeaesthetic, if i’m honest.

miscellaneous.  maybe they got his mail and returned it to his door, and it sparked the beginning of a beautiful friendship. maybe they met in the park when this person’s dog peed on bez’s shoe. maybe they’re a frequent listener to bez’s show and they bonded over that? or perhaps they both enjoy engaging in semi-friendly grocery store competitions to see who can get to the ripest apples the quickest? anything’s possible!

Pairing: Red Hood/Jason Todd X Reader

Chapter 4-

You held on for your life, but soon realized that you didn't need to. Red Hood was actually a excellent driver that was probably going easy on you. Your leg still stung and was still bleeding, so I knew that he was speeding and taking back roads. You lowered your head onto his back and relaxed a bit. His arm shifted and then you felt his chest start to vibrate as he talked. You let your eyes close and relaxed, knowing this would be fun to explain to your mother, whenever you got to see her next. Sooner than expected, Red Hood cut a corner and drove into a hidden tunnel. You had tensed when the two of you were suddenly engulfed in darkness, but he somehow took one hand off of the bike to pat your arm.

  He slowed as you entered the light at the end of the tunnel. You shut your eyes tight at the sudden change. You felt the bike slow and Red Hood parked and climbed off, and before you had the chance to say anything, swept you off of the bike,"Hey," you yelped,"You know I can walk for myself! I swear you're being such a-"

  There were footsteps, multiple sets, that entered what appeared to be a parking area. You were quite confused, You thought there was a giant T-Rex and other... you guessed trophies... in a section. You could tell you were underground, with the lighting. You had finished yanking the motorcycle helmet off when four people entered the room, and you knew three out of four, and their appearance silenced you.

 One was Mrs. Wayne, the other two were her youngest son's, Tim and Damian. The fourth person was in no doubt their butler, who you had never seen before. Mrs. Wayne smiled at you,"Hello Y/N, welcome to the Batcave."

  Your eyes were wide,"What. Is. Going. On?"

  The butler took a step forward,"I'm afraid that explanations will have to be put on hold for a moment. May I have a look at your injury?"

  You glared at Red Hood,"Sure, if he lets me down." Red Hood's eyes narrowed, but he complied anyway and gently set you down. You sighed,"Thank you."

 The Butler lead you down the short hallway- you were limping a bit but wouldn’t accept help from anyone- to a small secluded area with a set of stainless steel chairs and a table, with one of those trays for Doctor/Dentist instruments. It's only had three walls, and the fourth lead into what appeared to be a computer room. I could see Red Hood, Mrs. Wayne and her two other sons as they waited in the garage.

 The butler helped you sit and you shifted to the side so he can see at the still bleeding wound, the cape keeping most of your skin from coming into contact with the cold metal.

 The butler held his now latex-gloved hand out to you,"May I," he motioned to your dress' skirt.

You nodded your consent,"Yeah, I've got shorts on under."

 Alfred lifted the skirt and touched your leg, the angry red line that takes a path from right at the beginning of your dress' hemline and travels upward until it ended mid thigh. You tried to distract yourself,"So," you hissed out,"What's your name?"

 The older man gave you a soft smile,"Alfred, a butler for the Waynes for a few generations."

  You smiled,"That seems quite awe-inspiring. They always keep you on your toes, Mister Alfred?"

 His smile brightened,"Now, Now, Alfred will do. After all, you are Master Todd's Soul Mate. And yes, everyone in this family does tend to be very reckless. A trait, I do ever so hope you don't possess."

"Probably not. Never really been in too much trouble," You said, letting it sink in that Jason Todd was your soul mate, but feeling the need to clarify, you asked,"Red Hood is Jason?"

 Alfred raised an eyebrow,"Did the young master neglect to tell you his name?"

  You winced as he cleaned the graze- which is basically a flesh wound at this point- but, happened to be pretty deep,"Well in his defense, it was really bad timing and I didn't give him mine."

 Alfred hmphed and you had a feeling you would really like him. He analyzed your leg, thinking, before saying,"You'll need stitches."

You felt your stomach sink- for what felt like the hundredth time that night,"R-really?"

 Alfred nodded and removed his gloves,"I'll have to get supplies and tell the Mistress," he looked you over," I take it from your expression that you've never had stitches before- Would you like me to get Master Todd to be here?"

  You chewed on your lip,"Not preferably no. Could it be Mrs. Wayne?"

 Alfred nodded,"I don't blame you one bit Miss. L/N. I'll be back."

 He left you alone with your thoughts and you started rubbing your temples. Of Course. Of Freaking Course. You got the bad boy, who disappears and fakes his own death for a good number of years. And then comes back with a new hair do and attitude. Also, he’s the black sheep of the family. How on earth is this guy gonna complete you? You got that he saved your life, but um, he’s your soul mate? God help you.

You looked at your reflection of the table and sighed, at least you don't totally look like a mess, your bun somehow stayed well put despite being under the helmet, and you couldn't see the socks hidden in it. You could tell that your make up was far from perfect now, but it was still holding up. The power of priming and setting spray.

 It took maybe three minutes for Alfred and Mrs. Wayne to return. Mrs. Wayne looked somewhat displeased, but when she saw you her face brightened,"Hello Y/N," she smiled, and pulled a chair up next to you,"You wanted to see me?"

  You blushed,"Well, you're the only other woman here and I... Well, you really look like a mom, and since mine can't be here for this major milestone in my life, I'm sure she'd be honored for you to step in."

 Mrs. Wayne let out a giggle,"I take it you've never gotten stitched before."

  You sighed,"I've hardly had a bruise or scrape before today."

  Alfred readied his things, "Alright Miss. Y/N, I am ready to begin when you are."

 Mrs. Wayne took your hand and then hands you a towel with the other,"In case you need it," she whispered,"I don't recommend trying to bite your arm or hand, you'll just hurt yourself more.

  You nodded again, and close your eyes to prepare yourself and tried not to think about it. But, when the needle enters you skin, you couldn’t help but let out a small scream,"Ahhh!"

You shoved the towel into your mouth, and tears start forming at your eyes. Mrs. Wayne offered you a comforting smile, and you wonder just how many times she'd have to hold hands- or do the stitching herself.

 Mrs. Wayne doesn't hold the silence for long, soon she began talking to you, while wiping the tears away from your eyes,"If you are worried about your family, I just got a report from my husband that they're all fine, but your mother had a few panic attacks so she's in the hospital. Your mother knows that you've met your soulmate, but thinks that he helped you flee the scene."

You nodded, trying not to look at the needle as it enters your skin again, leaving a red hot trail of pain in its wake. Mrs. Wayne continues,"I would like to apologize if Jason's come off on the wrong foot, he's a good young man, but he's been through a lot." You raises an eyebrow but nodded again, but she doesn't continue in that direction and turned to another,"I sent him to go get clothes for you to wear. They're my old ones. He called us on his way here to let us know you'd be coming."

  You cringed, and nearly squirm out of the chair as another stitch was started and you’re screaming into the towel. Mrs. Wayne stands and held you down and everyone froze until the pain passes. You’re sweating buckets at this point and panting. Mrs. Wayne smiled down at you,"I knew it'd tear him up to see you like this. Even if you didn't mean to protect him, I'd like to thank you for having me here instead of him."

 This time the tears are coming to fast for her to wipe away. She whispered to you as they began again,"That's it, you're doing very well Y/N, you're so strong. Only a few more, hang in there- I know you can."

  It seems like for forever, but really it only takes Alfred about twenty minutes to stitch you up. He threw the tools down and removes his gloves, and Mrs. Wayne covers the stitches with bandages and finishes on your scratches and thorns that had caught you,"There we go! You did beautifully Miss. L/N, Say any treat you can name and it's yours."

 It does the trick and you smile," Well a pain medication would be wonderful right about now. And Chocolate."

Alfred laughed,"I think I have a piece of double chocolate cake with your name on it."

"Oooo," Mrs. Wayne cooed," And it's the last piece too, but you deserve it. I'll tell the boys not to touch it. Would you like to see Jason?"

You nod and carefully stood,"I guess. He's got my clothes right?"

Mrs. Wayne checked her watch as she walked next to you,"My husband should be back at any moment, and I'm afraid he and Jason are having a bit of a disagreement."

"Is it about me?"

 She paused in her stride,"Not entirely, but I'm afraid you are a factor," she throws her arm around your shoulders and sighs," But it's been going on for a while, so don't blame yourself."

  You nod and both of you entered the garage area, Tim -who's changed into more comfortable clothes instead of his Tux-and Damian sat on a couch you hadn't noticed before. Jason sat on a well cushioned chair with his back to you,"-all I'm saying is," Damian said off-handedly,"Father will not be pleased with you, Todd."

Mrs. Wayne cleared her throat, and they all fell silent, in fact her two younger sons shoot up. You swallow as Jason sits up, he turns to face you, and it's hard to believe this is the Red Hood, he's got the nice chiseled Wayne face (okay, jawline is everything but come on), even if he isn't a real Wayne, the same black hair- except with a white streak- but beautiful light green eyes. He stands and slowly trudges over to the two of you, hugging and kissing his adoptive mother,"Thanks Ma."

 He turned to you,"I know I didn't get to tell you earlier-"

You smiled, suddenly very tired, but still awake enough to function,"It's okay, Jason," You held out your hand and he shook it," I'm Y/N L/N, your soul mate. I'm sorry that I called you a Jackass earlier."

Tired of those surveys made by high school kids? “Have you ever kissed someone? Missed someone? Drank alcohol?”

Here are 35 questions for Grown Ups:

1. What bill do you hate paying the most?: Right now my electricity bill. It's so high... I have to pay 150€ at the end of the month and I'm slightly panicked about it.

2. Where was the last place you had a romantic dinner?: I wouldn't call it romantic, but I had dinner at the Greek place around the corner with my boyfriend.

3. What do you really want to be doing right now?: Sleeping, but I am actually too lazy to go to bed... Yep, that's thing.

4. How many colleges did you attend?: None. It works a bit differently in Germany. I attended school to get the education degree I needed to apply for uni, but I was bullied by my homeroom teacher and had to quit.

5. Why did you choose the shirt you have on now?: It's comfy. It's actually an old shirt to sleep in my grandma gave me some 20 years ago...

6. Thoughts on gas prices?: I live in Germany... They're always way too high. Though they're “low” at the moment, with 1,23€/Liter (not gallon) yesterday.

7. First thought when the alarm goes off in the morning?: “Shut the fuck up, I hate you so much. Just kill me already. Is this thing really important enough to get out of bed for?”

8. Last thought you have before you go to bed?: “If I fall asleep right now I have about 4 hours of sleep. Not bad.” (Then I headcanon about Destiel, ahem)

9. Do you miss being a child?: Yes. Living carefree, not worrying if you can afford something, no bills to pay, parents handling all the adult stuff... Sign me up!

10. What errand/chore do you despise the most?: Laundry by far. I get so motivated sometimes, but waiting for the machine to finish, I lose that motivation. Hanging laundry, ugh. I almost never put it away nowadays, just take what I need...

11. Up early or sleep in?: Sleep in for sure. If you let me, I can sleep for 12-20 hours...

13. Favorite lunch meat?: Like, on sandwiches? I'm not much of a bread eater, but I occasionally like liverwurst. Plus the word is funny.

14. What do you get at the grocery store every time?: Frozen food. I can't cook and I'm impatient. Also poor.

15. Beach or lake?: Both. There is this amazing lake near where my boyfriend lives that also has a sandy beach.

16. Is marriage outdated?: Somewhat, yeah. But I'm still a romantic at heart and I would love to marry my boyfriend. Which is never gonna happen, but still.

17. What famous person would you like to have dinner with?: Misha Collins, he seems so fun and smart. The right kind of dorky. Stephen Hawking would be amazing, too. I could listen to him for hours, even though I barely understand the topic...

18. Ever crashed your vehicle?: I bumped into things here and there, and once I rear-ended someone because I looked away for a second. Also my depth perception isn't that great. But never really crashed it, no.

19. Do you have any regrets?: A lot, but the way I see it, they changed me, made me who I am. But I would totally go back and never get my first three tattoos...

20. Strangest place you’ve brushed your teeth?: Eh, I don't know? The only place I ever brushed that wasn't at home (or at my boyfriend's) was at the dentist's, before an appointment. Oh, and hotel rooms. But nothing really strange.

21. Somewhere you’ve never been but want to go?: So many places. I would love to visit Sweden and Canada. England, too. And a lot of conventions in the US of A...

22. At this point, would you want to start a new career?: Any career for that matter. I haven't been able to really build something because I've been sick and unable to work most of my life...

23. How old are you?: Two weeks shy of 29...

24. Do you have a go-to person?: My boyfriend, for the most part. For “woman stuff” my best friend of 25 years.

25. Are you where you want to be in life?: Not at all. But I make the best of it.

26. Growing up, what were your favorite cartoons?: I loved the old Spiderman. Rugrats, Animaniacs, Scooby-Doo, Recess, AAAHH!!! Real Monsters, Rocko's Modern Life, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball... All the good stuff.

27. What do you think has changed about you since you were a teenager?: I kind of made peace with myself. I stopped worrying about what other people think, I embraced my weirdness, I try to stay positive, live and let live. I realized there are more important things than focusing on stuff I hate. I mostly ignore that now.

28. Looking back at high school, were they the best years of your life?: I liked learning, always have. But I was the weird kid, shy, timid. I got bullied a lot. So no. High School was hell for me.

29. Are there times you still feel like a kid?: Yes. Sometimes I sound like an old hag, but I still get giggly over the tiniest things and get called childish a lot. I still feel young and can't believe I'm almost 30...

30. Did you have a pager?: A what now? Those were never really fashionable here, I don't think.

31. Was there a hang-out spot when you were a kid?: In the first village I grew up in, there were these two lakes. One of them had a functional manual water pump, which was nice in the summer. Also the goat and horse pens.

32. Were you the type of kid you’d want your children to hang out with?: I would encourage them probably. I was the weird kid that didn't talk much and mostly wanted to be left alone...

33. Was there a teacher or figure that stood out to you?: My homeroom teacher was this young woman, I think 32, really fierce, loud voice, didn't take shit. But also really nice if you showed her respect (which most didn't since our class was horrible). Then there was this substitute art teacher, super tall, super skinny, bleach blond hair, probably gay. Really nice. I once complained that my drawing looked “too anime” and he knew what I meant and gave me tips on how to improve. Fuck, I once wrote something like “I <3 yaoi” (I was really into that when I was younger, sue me) on the back of one drawing and when I got an A on it, I swear it was because of that. I actually had a lot of amazing teachers. Another homeroom teacher, two great math teachers, my English and French teacher... But equally as many bad ones, too.

34. Do you tell stories that start with “when I was your age”?: Oh yes. I don't mean to, but I do. Or rather I did, when I still talked to my now 20yo great-niece...

35. Are you religious?: Nah. I've been an atheist since I was about 12. I didn't grow up with religion. I don't mind it, but I dislike the church. Religion itself is actually quite interesting, but as a queer woman I could never really identify myself with it. I'm all about science, too. I don't mind religious people, though, unless they try to shove it down my throat.

have a few issues I could really use some help with. The family car that I have been driving wasn't in my name but I was still covered on the insurance until one day I hit a mailbox with the passenger side mirror. Hi everyone, I would appreciate your ideas regarding the following situation: My son had a car accident last week in a nearby WalMart parking lot (Dallas, Paulding County, GA). He was driving down a parking lane and hit a car which came out of nowhere cutting across the aisle. Both vehicles had extensive damage (front of the vehicle on our car, and driver side on the other car). There was a gentleman who saw everything and called 911. The sheriff's deputy arrived at the scene promptly. He explained there would be an accident report, but since this happened in a private parking lot, he was not in a position to state who was at fault. I got the report the other day and it states the facts about the accident and gives the contact information for the witness. I have spoken with the other driver's insurance company three times and I just found out that their claims rep has determined that my son was at fault, so they have denied my claim. The claim with them was actually originally filed by the other driver. I politely asked to speak with a supervisor and was advised that I should expect to receive a call from a supervisor soon. I did not get a chance to talk to my insurance rep after I found out the other insurance denied the claim, but I am not sure if there is anything my insurance can do for us, especially given the fact that we only have liablity coverage on this vehicle (no collision coverage either). I think it is really outrageous how they could claim my son was at fault, if all evidence points to the fact that their insured was driving across the parking lanes and obviously did not see our car. I cannot find anything online (like traffic regulations) that explicitly says that the driver cutting across the parking lanes is at fault if there is a collision, but I think it is common sense that this should be the responsible party! How much should I expect to pay for car insurance?

Im not 100% what year but I am planning on getting an 09-10 Mazda speed3. Maybe a new one but its a long shot. I am currently 19 and in the police academy. So I don't know if being a cop will affect my coverage. I am actually waiting until I graduate before I buy the car. I just want to determine what I would pay to see if I can afford it. When I actually get the car it would be my 3rd year with a license. I have never had a car in my name before either. This will be my first one. I am also planning on financing the car. What should I expect for monthly payments?

Good question. I’ll answer you when I have any and I’ve made up my mind.

Seriously though, I have no idea. It’d probably depend on how I feel at the time and how my possible future wife would feel. I’d like to name any kids I have after characters I’m fond of, maybe Peter for a boy after Peter Parker. Probably give him Clark as a middle name too after superman. On the off chance I ever marry a Japanese woman though I’d insist we name our son Goku, but that’s a very specific situation so I don’t see it happening.

I guess if I ever had a daughter I’d name her Prima after my mother.

My mother, my paternal grandparents, and all of my old pets that have passed away.

4. what are you looking forward to?

Tonight’s Dragon Ball Super episode and the My Little Pony movie. Also, my dog’s having puppies in a week, so that’s exciting.

Are we talking in a romantic relationship ending sense or a friendship ending sense? If it’s the former I have no idea, no dating experience. It does take me a while to get over not talking to a friend anymore, but I cope pretty easily after a while. I like keeping to myself for the most part, I don’t have a lot of friends offline so it’s not too big a deal for me.

Pretty meh, had a number of ups and downs, some really bad days, and some very good ones. And of course I discovered just how unbearably frustrating and depressing politics can really be and how much America and my own country make me want to bang my head against a wall. So, not a great year, but for me personally I coped alright. I just wish I’d done more to move forward with my life, like finding a full time job. i’m stuck in part time and I’m still looking.

8. have you ever cried because you were so annoyed?

I don’t think I’ve cried for that kind of reason. I usually only cry if I’m very sad or depressed over something, extreme annoyance tends to manifest in anger, ranting and fidgeting for me.

My dad. He’s downstairs from me. Same as my sister. I just got back from seeing my nan aswell.

I named my first cat Socks.

I Didn’t realize there had ever been any cast changes on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers until Kimberly left because I missed the episode writing out Jason, Zack and Trini, so I somehow didn’t notice that the black and yellow rangers were being played by actors of completely different races in the later parts of season 2 and season 3 until years after the fact. No, seriously, I was just that stupid as a really little kid.

Once when I was a kid I drew on the walls of my parents bedroom to make the place look like a jungle, as well as drawing whiskers and animal markings on me and my sister’s faces. I don’t remember it honestly, but I can tell my parents were mad about it.

In school most of them were boys, same for at work because there are only two women at the kennels compared to two male co-workers and my male employer. Online I’m friends with more girls than guys though.

well of more recent scenes i really enjoyed the cat and sugar comforting vine and telling him nah bro, you are a guardian its okay bud. i thought that was really sweet and it was really nice to see vine legitimately upset by something like that.

Got through five chapters. I think my fave scene is still when Enne first hears who Victory is from the announcement, and he gets that LOOK, and then you're all OMG what's he gonna do and it's not what I thought.

I like how Vine's the Guardian, who in most cases is the old wise mentor type, but he's the comic relief. He's still "Vine The Loon" to me.

Ooh, that's an interesting choice. I remember thinking about thought bubbles when I saw some for Victory in a scene with them. Yeah, the gesturing and actions with the stars works for me. He still feels dynamic. And tall.

i actually really like maltor tbh. like i appreciate his gritty realism compared to everyone else cause it brings a lot of balance to the group. since the others didnt even think about setting up a watch. so despite it all maltor is a good guy keeping everyone breathing.

QUESTION 2. For some reason, Victory is able to use the power of the guardians to cause both miracles and great destruction. Why do you think she’s able to do this? Is she some chosen one or was it happenstance? Relatedly, what do you think happened in Narrot all those years ago that caused Victory to destroy it?

Mysa does have similar characteristics to a Ryuu, but for the most part, the evolution part of their species is similar to ours with apes.

for me where i get torn on theories is whether its a chosen one thing or happenstance. albeit with the latter i like picturing the cat showing up, dropping the talisman and then victory absorbing it. and then the cat is like "well crap this is my life now."

As to what happened in Narrot, I think she somehow absorbed the fire talisman. Like, saw it on the ground or something. That's why she can belch fire, and why the kitty's stayed with her all this time.

yeah i think at the end she wouldve had to absorb the fire talisman or something related to it. its just a question if thats what caused the explosion or w/e happened. or if the explosion was a later cause someone freaked victory out. since her fire is triggered by her fear usually.

I'm usually fine with artists who just do some colour on cover pages, but I've seen it elsewhere too. It's nice, but not necessary by any means.

New theory! Victory is actually the essence of the Dragon God. The actual Dragon totes forgot he expunged all his goodness, and left it in a vial somewhere, and it became Victory. So named because she can defeat her evil half, once she levels up.

QUESTION 4. Enne, though fairly nice and pleasant, is plagued by the events of Narrot. Despite growing attached to Victory, Enne remains a bit torn on what occurred in the past. What do you think will ultimately happen in regards to Enne’s feelings? What will Enne’s role be later on in the story considering he’s been trained as a swordsmith?

Enne's scar is from when the town was destroyed. He was injured and couldn't speak afterwards

Enne's base story is fairly straight forward: Town was destroyed when he was 10, he was injured and can no longer talk, but has his mother's skills as a swordsmith and worked at the mountain after Yababa healed him to make a living. He was repairing swords and metal digging tools
