See my thing with vengeful spirit/entity revenge horror is I just… don’t get why they can’t be friends?? I always feel really bad for the monsters like wow I’m sorry you had a horrific life and death that really sucks. And I get that they’re angry and want revenge but it’s always on innocent people. Why is it never enough to find someone who empathizes with their pain and tries to help them/lay them to rest? WHY DO WE HAVE TO MURDER THE NICE PEOPLE???
Anyways I would die in a horror movie because I would be like I’m gonna befriend the creepy haunted murder doll and this will horrifically backfire on me
#so I watched the autopsy of Jane doe last night#really fun movie!!#but I’m like JANE. HONEY#WHAT ARE YOU DOING#you’ve finally found nice people who understand all you’ve been through and what do you do#I wanted them to be her friends :(#also the ring#just watched that#samara honey WHY#you could’ve had a BETTER mother#anyways horror movies when you have high empathy is so funny because you’re like sure she murdered countless people#but have we considered she’s sad :(#lea talks#lea off topic tag

Maura thinks of Jane every time she has a human heart in her hands. Severed arterials, the scrape of a snapped ribcage, the blood that no longer pumps through a circulatory system.
Maura misses Jane; more than she should, as they have been polite colleagues more than friends for the past few years. She'd thought Paris was going to be Something, that Something would finally happen, but Jane just kept looking at her with those big doe eyes and never said anything. Never touched Maura. Never once, in eight - nine years - never once said she loved Maura.
Maura didn't know what love felt like. She knew attraction and affection, she knew anger and disappointment. She knew what a human heart felt like, cradled in the palm of her hand. Mostly because she cradled one gently right now, examining the tear. An undiagnosed hole. She knew how it felt; metaphorically, of course, because her chest scans had all come back too perfect to explain this pain in her chest since Jane had left.
She works longer hours than she used to. She sees Susie in the shadows sometimes, her beautiful dark eyes watching Maura slice everyone else open. She's good, if macabre, company.
Maura contemplates the heart again. So fragile it needs a cage to dwell in, but so strong it sends blood hundreds of miles every hour. She doesn't believe in miracles, but the heart comes pretty close.
"That might as well be mine, the way you hold my heart," a familiar voice comes from nearby. Maura doesn't flinch; it's her thirtieth hour at work. She often hears Jane's voice haunting the halls. But when she weighs the heart and makes note of the location and depth of the tear in the connective tissue, she sees Jane.
She's in a suit - a proper one, tailored to her hips and waist. There's a visitor's badge on her hip instead of a gun, which means this isn't a hallucination. The Jane of her dreams wears a gun and sometimes little else.
Maura slides on fresh gloves and continues emptying the abdominal cavity.
"You're not happy to see me." Jane's voice is flat and disappointed. "Well, I guess I deserved that. And worse."
Frost doesn't show up in the morgue; he'd always hated it down there. He shows up at his old desk. The blue gardian action figure never moves around; Frankie inherited it and Frost's desk.
Maura doesn't see dead people. She's just very, very tired.
"I'm working, and you shouldn't be in here," Maura says. Her voice is sterner than she intended but also more resigned. "Visitor's pass is only good for my office."
Jane slinks away like Maura has yelled at her. Maura completes the autopsy and scrubs up after putting the body in cold storage with the help of Todd. He prefers nights. He doesn't like people, although he tolerates Maura. He liked Jane.
Maura liked Jane. No, Maura loved Jane.
And Jane is in her office. Maura can sense her pacing before she even opens the door, but Jane is sitting sedately on the couch, looking down at the scars on her hands. Maura has assumed it's night but her watch tells her it's day again and she wonders how long she's been working.
"You look exhausted." Jane's voice is concerned. "When did you last sleep?"
"Tuesday?" It's a question. It's a guess; Jane loves those. She doesn't love Maura. Maura feels a fist slowly clench around her heart. "I don't see how it's any of your business."
"You are my business," Jane says, her voice so low that Maura's heart cracks. It's too late. Jane is relying on a shared past rather than their current relationship. They're acquaintances, if that. It was Jane's choice to pull away, and Maura let her.
"Not any more," Maura says. Her voice is steady. She could use some sleep but Jane is on the couch. She wants, more than anything, to lie down with her head in Jane's lap and have those strong fingers smooth through her hair, to rub the stress from her forehead and shoulders. Instead she sits at the desk, the sturdy wood between Jane and herself. "What do you want, Jane?"
"What I've always wanted. I want you."
Maura shakes her head. Hallucinations are common after a certain number of hours awake. Even though Jane is dressed and wearing a visitor's badge doesn't mean she isn't a hallucination. Jane would never say something like that. Jane has never, never wanted her.
"Can I take you home? You shouldn't drive like this."
"And you shouldn't drive at all. You're not real. You're not really here. You're not here."
Maura panics and calls Washington. They say Jane is on leave.
Of course they'd say that. Maura is nothing to Jane. She's not next of kin. She turns back to Jane.
"I loved you, you know," she tells Jane's ghost. "More than I ever thought a human heart was capable of. I thought it was all hormones and chemistry but it was my heart."
Jane looks worried. There is a reddish brown stain at her waist and her throat and her hands; all her old wounds are breaking open and bleeding on Maura's floor and couch.
Jane always was a slob, was Maura's last thought before darkness took her.
+++
Maura wakes on her own couch to the smell of roasted coffee. She wakes to hushed voices arguing. She wakes to Jane's face peering anxiously down at her.
"Ma said you'd thrown yourself into your work when you came back. She's worried about you. I'm worried about you."
"You've never cared about me." Maura takes the coffee and avoids the look on Jane's face; she might as well have slapped her.
"I might not have been able to say it, but you know I care about you, don't you?" Jane says. She crouches at Maura's feet, looking up at her. "It's why I'm here."
Maura's lived a life feeling unloved and lost. She doesn't know what to say.
"I don't."
"You don't care, or you don't know I care?"
Maura shakes her head and drinks her coffee, avoiding Jane's gaze. She remembers now all the things Jane used to do for her. Her comforting touch, the way she'd stay with Maura when something bad had happened, the way Jane used to hold her.
Used to, as in not for years.
"I'm a coward. You know that."
Maura has seen Jane throw herself off a bridge. She's seen Jane shoot herself. Jane's no coward.
"I didn't know how to tell you. I didn't know how to even admit it to myself. But it's always been you, you know that, right?"
She still hasn't said anything, still hasn't admitted anything. Maura sips again; the coffee is good. Jane paid attention to the details.
"I - Christ. I -" Jane doesn't manage to say what she so wanted to say. She reaches for Maura's hand instead. "Why is this so hard?"
"Because you're not really here," Maura says. "I'm hallucinating again. It's common in people who don't sleep, and I haven't slept since you left. I haven't felt safe since you left."
"I'm a hallucination, huh?" Jane's lips twitch as though she finds that amusing. "I think you should go back to bed."
Maura checks her watch. She should be working. But none of this is real. But she should be working; it's the only thing that makes sense since Jane left. It's the only thing that fills the void Jane left.
"Will you come with me? I'll keep you safe. I promise."
Maura nods; she always believes Jane even though she knows Jane lies. She lets Jane help her to her feet and up the stairs, and then out of her shoes and dress and onto her big soft bed. Jane even uses the facial wipes Maura keeps at the bedside for nights too late for skincare. Jane hovers over her.
"As long as I'm a hallucination," Jane says, and then her eyes soften. All her shields drop and she looks at Maura like she is the single most precious thing in the world. Jane leans down and kisses her, just a press of lips against Maura's. "I've always loved you," Jane whispers, her fingers brushing Maura's hair out of her face. "I was scared. I've been so scared. But a life without you in it isn't worth it. I had to tell you. If you hate me I can leave again, knowing I tried. I'm a coward because I never tried; I had so much to lose. You were too much to lose."
Maura's eyes slip closed. Hallucination Jane is kinder than Jane ever was. She always is.
+++
Maura wakes nearly a full day later. She's cold; her immune system hasn't been coping with her long hours. She shivers and digs out a big, fluffy robe that Angela bought her for Christmas one year. It's not her aesthetic, but it's thick and soft and warm. She showers, aware of the smell of her own body. She puts on pyjamas and calls out sick, then heads down to the kitchen for some hot lemon water. There should still be lemons in the bowl on the counter; they're about the only fruit TJ won't eat.
Jane's there. She's not watching the tv or doing anything. She's just there. Haunting Maura. Maura needs to call Washington again; if they've told Angela she'll need to be comforted. Everyone will be devastated, but Maura is numb.
She's been numb since Jane left.
She makes lemon and honey and yawns so hard she feels her jaw shift. Jane watches, the way Susie does in the lab.
Maura knows Jane will haunt her everywhere. She was in every element of Maura's life; her home, her car, her work. Boston is filled with the ghost of Jane.
"I missed you," Jane says quietly and Maura shrugs.
"I didn't go anywhere."
Jane chuckles but she's hurt rather than amused. Maura wonders who got to cut her open, if they were careful with her magnificent heart.
"I shouldn't have left."
"You shouldn't have." Maura would never have said this to Jane when she was alive. But she's not so it doesn't matter. She vaguely remembers a kiss. She wants to remember a kiss, so she takes one from Jane. She closes in on her and sets her mug down, pushing Jane against the counter. She looks up into a face she once knew so well and sees only -
An emotion she doesn't know. She sees all the love Jane had hidden over the years, all the cues Maura didn't take to confess her own feelings.
She's angry at herself, at Jane. Her mouth is hard and closed when it meets Jane, like a bullet into flesh. She wonders where Jane's body is, if she's in cold storage somewhere. If she's being cut open at that moment.
Jane kisses her back so softly that Maura's entire heart shatters in her chest. She knows it's not real but Jane is soft and warm and yielding in Maura's arms; she kisses like it's something she's wanted to do for a long time.
Maura can't stand it. Her brain has failed her once. She can't stand it. She pulls away.
"I've always loved you," Jane says, and her voice is so tender and honest, her fingers gentle on Maura's cheeks. "Always."
"And you waited until you were dead to tell me."
Jane looks surprised, like she doesn't know she's dead yet.
"I'm not dead," Jane says. "I came home because I was worried about you. I came home because I felt so guilty."
Maura rolls her eyes.
"Why do you think I'm dead?"
"I see Frost, sometimes," Maura says gently. "Susie, too. I figure it must have happened when I saw you last night. Washington said they couldn't locate you."
"They're not supposed to give out my location. But I assure you, I'm not dead. You're seeing dead people? Is that to do with your Chiari?"
Maura shrugs; Jane doesn't care. Jane isn't here.
"What can I do to convince you this is real? Or should I take you to the hospital?"
"Probably the hospital. I don't feel very well. You can't drive though; you're not real."
Jane doesn't complain this time.
+++
Maura wakes. There's an IV in her arm and Jane holds her hand. Jane is slumped in the same suit she'd worn to the morgue, asleep with her head lolled back against the single chair in the room. Maura head hurts.
A doctor comes in and explains the surgery they did. Maura explains that she can still see Jane.
"Of course you can. She's been here all night."
"You can see her?"
The doctor nods and makes a note on her chart.
+++
Maura wakes. Jane is smiling down at her. The smile broadens when she sees Maura looking up at her.
"Hey."
Jane helps her sit up.
"They fixed it. They missed something last time."
That means no more sweet Frost, no more smart Susie. Not that they were ever really there but they'd been good company in Jane's absence.
"You're really here?"
Jane nods and lets her fingers brush Maura's cheek.
"I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."
"Good," Maura says, and she falls back asleep.
+++
It takes weeks for Maura to adjust to being alone in her own head. She watches Jane hawkishly but she never shows any signs of not being real, and Angela and Frankie respond to her in ways they don't respond to Frost. Maura had seen Frankie sit on Frost at least twice, but Frost had always joked about wanting a lap dance anyway.
It's hard. She feels alone, even though Jane has moved in with her. Jane always looks on the verge of saying something but she never does. She just watches Maura with wounded doe eyes and Maura wonders if there's something she's forgetting.
She remembers the kiss too late. Almost too late.
"I kissed you," Maura says one night. Jane is in soft cotton clothes to sleep in and her hair is its old untamed mess. Jane doesn't meet her eyes. Maura's heart sinks. "Oh. Oh. I'm sorry."
Jane's eyes snap to hers. Her mouth tightens like she wants to say something, then her shoulders slump.
"Don't be. I was too late, wasn't I? I'd already hurt you. And it wasn't like you thought I was alive at the time."
"I just figured there was no way you'd have let me if you were alive. And all the rest. I don't know. I don't really remember."
"That's a shame," Jane says lowly. "It was really nice."
"It was?"
"It was everything I'd hoped for. And I'd hoped for a lot. It was worth coming home for, even if your brain is fixed now and you don't need me. I'll find somewhere else to live soon, once you've fully recovered."
"I don't want you to live anywhere else," Maura says before she can think about it.
Jane's smile is tentative, like she knows she can't fix everything overnight. But she's not running away any more.
"It's always been you," Jane says, and she sits up. She looks at Maura's mouth, then back up to her eyes. "And now that I'm real, I'd like to start making it up to you."
Maura tilts her head in consent, and Jane cups her cheek and wends her fingers into Maura's hair. She exhales and Maura feels it on her lips, in her lungs, in her heart. Jane's lips brush hers and Maura's breath and heart catch, then resume. Jane's lower lip caresses Maura so gently that Maura's eyes water with the tenderness of her touch. Maura finds herself moving closer, finds her lips and heart opening to Jane. Jane feels so good; her touch is gentle and reverent and her lips are soft and delicate.
Jane pulls away; not far she presses her forehead against Maura's.
"I missed you. It felt like I broke my own heart." Jane's tone is low and raw and honest, and Maura pulls herself close, forcing Jane to hold her the way she used to.
She settles her head against Jane's chest and listens to the healthy heart of the woman she loves.

Warning: gore, mentioned of blood.
Author's note: One day I will write a detailed scene of Uta eating if this is received well. So be ready. In general however this is more introspective than anything else.
P.S. I thought of The Autopsy of Jane Doe for the film
Tokyo Ghoul, Uta x Human!Reader
Horror
Uta was watching you that night.
You'd gotten closer in the last few minutes, and the pillow that was propped against your crossed legs had tightened to your chest.
It was more of a game than anything for you. You even smiled as you watched the doctor spread the woman's chest like butterfly wings, though your nose wrinkled a little at the sight of it.
He had found you fascinating at that time, and somewhat disconcerting.
“If it impresses you too much we can stop seeing it.” He had told you, even if it was you who insisted in the first place.
Your laugh had been sweet: “Well, a horror has to impress.”
That's how it is, he thinks, for human beings like you.
But when Uta looked at the screen he can tell that those exposed muscles and protruding bones weren't so terrible, they weren't any different from what he sees every day, from what he himself causes.
Was it fascination and excitement that made you hug him now, or was it the unease of the macabre spectacle?
He wonders if you know, if you understand who holds you in his arms.
You're just lucky to be loved, little human, so fragile to break, to devour from head to toe. If it were up to him, not even the bones would remain of you. He would crush and ingest them like the drug you are. His poison, which he can't get enough of even if you make him feel these emotions, this anger and this adoration.
Can real life impress you too?
You chose him, him with his hands squeezing lungs still to be torn, him with his mouth already smeared with blood.
He hears the jingle of falling keys, your eyes are fixed on the corpse that emerges from the black bag. The human arms are already broken, closed inside a plastic bag, but you arrived in time to see the open chest, just like butterfly wings. Did you like it?
“Uta...” You start, you seem hypnotized by that vision.
He stands up, his sleeve wipes the blood staining his jaws without really doing it: "Sorry, I was just putting it away but... I got hungry."
His approaching you is a challenge that not even he dares to name. Your vision shifts from the half-open eyes of the dead man to those of the ghoul.
“Why…?” You just ask him. You know he never let you see anything like this for a reason, that he always wanted to protect you from this in his own way.
A whole body by the way. Ribs split open like a book left half open reveal a heart you can't see.
It's that man's heart, but it's yours that Uta is now trying to eat.
“What have I done?” Your voice comes out as a compliant sigh, your eyes close, but they just look tired.
“Why do you think you did something to me?”
Uta knows he's sneaky, maybe mean to you. But on the other hand, you chose him, crazy as he is. Meaningless mask maker, he can't accept that you love only a facade.
"Do you hate that I'm a human so much, Uta?"
No, he loves you to be human.
Loving you makes him feel alive. You are both anchor on earth and a feather in the wind that can escape from his fingers, a breath from him would be enough, or it would be enough to lean you on his tongue and swallow.
It would be so easy to make you disappear, but if he did it would be too cold for him. But he loves it, he loves you in every way that he knows.
That's why he plays like this with you, because he even likes the sense of guilt you put in his soul when you look at him with that wounded look.
“I thought you liked these things.” He says. That's why he pushes himself to the limit every time. He pushes himself and he pushes you.
Your eyes investigate his mute face.
“Can we get out of this together?” You ask.
“We always have.” He answers.
“You want?”
An inkling of alarm lights up in the back of his mind. You're as good at playing as he is now.
Your hands lean on his cheeks, caressing them slowly as if he's the one about to break.
“Did I hurt you?”
What a silly question you ask him, how can a human hurt a ghoul? But that doubt that claws at the back of his throat it’s you who caused it. Perhaps the day will come when you will run away from him, because you have understood that blood is not fiction.
“I am…the monster of the story.” Finally he says. His nose twitches a little as he reflects on his own words: “I even have the mask.”
You smile, and he's in your arms: “I really don't think you can find anything wrong with that.”
“Why, you find it wrong?”
“No.” Your lips brushes the tattoo on his neck “A ghoul that kills a human will never be as creepy as a human that kills a human, no matter how you look at it.”
It's probably as you say, even if Uta thinks he can't fit that pattern either, but that doesn't matter for now. For now he will just rest his face on yours, while his arm squeezes your waist to him.
“Maybe I'm just saying that because I have a ghoul of my own, but-“
“You say that because you're too weird for a human to be a good human.” He interrupts you by tapping his index finger on the tip of your nose.
Your laughter now has an aftertaste of revenge: “Be careful who you eat, my dear monster. You may be cursed one day.”
You slip out of his grasp to hide somewhere, waiting for him to finish what he started.
Uta sighs, but he doesn't try to hide the slight smile she gives him.
Cursed, huh? But in the end, a curse more or a curse less, what difference does it make?

i haven’t done a what i’m playing/watching post in awhile so let’s do that (no spoilers)
(thanks for finally fucking adding a read more button in mobile, jeez)
been watching nge with phil for a bit, we’re quite near the end and would be done by now if i hadn’t had to press pause cause my mental health unexpectedly got real bad 😔 thank u bestie for your patience with me 🙏 i’ve been promising to do this with her since forever and i feel pretty shitty bringing it to a halt like this lmao.
last night bella and i started watching channel zero on a whim, we’re nearly through the first season aka teeth child the child made of teeth. i don’t know how intentional some of the humor in this has been but i’ve actually guffawed out loud at some points. i feel like it is somewhat meant to be a bit cheeky and dark since it’s kris straub-derived, you know in that way when something fucked up happens and somebody smiles and says “everything’s fine” as if you didn’t see the fucked-up thing with your own two eyeballs. that kind of funny. (“these are tortillas.” you know what i mean.)
we also binged good omens season 2 in one afternoon. uhh i really enjoyed it. i liked how it decided to tell a smaller story this time. you know how so often in shows and things the stakes have to keep escalating. and good omens started with the literal end of the world so they were like hm. let’s just scale it back and tell a love story or two. all on this one little street. like… it feels like fun supplementary material to the first season. like a tie-in novel kind of thing if that makes sense. i dunno it just feels kinda like… the right move. it makes it more, dare i say, human and personal, which kind of dovetails well with the themes of the first season. like a little complement. and ofc. the casting and acting are just so exemplary. i have a crush on every boy.
we’ve also watched some movies. i’m not sure i remember them all but here are the most recent ones:
i watched the heathers musical (a proshot is free with adds on roku). here’s a confession: i’ve never seen the movie and didn’t fully know the plot other than murder? so i was like hm maybe the teen suicide satire was not the best choice for a bad mental health episode. but anyway i watched all of it. the performances are really good, especially heather chandler who just ate every scene and knew it. the songs were pretty good too, dead girl walking and i say no were probably the best ones. ohhhh and i loved the actress who played martha, she was flawless. it was pretty fun(?) but weirdly like… sincerely uplifting for being a dark satire. more has been written by people who know much better than me about the “musicals for teens” trend so i won’t go into it but it feels like this is an extension of that.
i also watched legally blonde the musical (uploaded probably not legally to youtube from when it aired on mtv in 2007 so the quality isn’t amazing but it’s perfectly watchable). it is a lot of fun. a couple of weird added-in race things? but again, it’s from 2007. oh but i hated paulette’s intro song and i just don’t understand why they decided to do… that with her character. just a baffling choice. the actress was really good though. we also did some dissecting about how they gave elle less agency in her own empowerment in favor of emmett doing it which wasn’t a great choice!!!! anyway definitely not as good as the movie but very fun as a supplement to it. and dogs!!!!
i saw the autopsy of jane doe for the first time. it was a pretty good time! some really good spookenings and lots of little fucked-up things happening, which is what i like in a horror movie. i’ll definitely watch it again.
we watched infinity pool and i just don’t know exactly how i feel about it! i prrrrobably won’t watch it again actually, but not because it was bad, just because it was like, ah well that was an experience, but not one that needs to be repeated. the themes and ideas were good and executed in an interesting way, i think ultimately it’s just not exactly For Me. however mia goth as always is perfection. remember when i saw emma period and i said harriet stole the show. i was ahead of my time.
we also watched influencer which might kind of be a new favorite! such good acting especially by the lead. just loved all the choices it made, most of which i was not expecting. a good fucking time tbh. also absolutely gorgeous scenery, every frame a painting truly.
a little while back i watched gone in the night with winona ryder. i need to stress that i watched this in two halves a couple days apart cause that really drove home how fucking off the rails this movie gets in the latter half. the first half is a pretty standard intriguing mystery and then the second is just like let’s answer all these questions in the most out-there way possible short of bringing anything supernatural or aliens into the mix. not a good movie i’ll be honest!!
i really want to see talk to me, which will maybe be on streaming next month but probably only for renting/“owning” blah. also red white and royal blue drops next friday! i think that’s gonna be a fun time with the girlies.
i haven’t really read anything lately, i started a book a few weeks ago but haven’t really had the mental fortitude to focus on it.
as for the games i’ve been spending some time with my switch lately. i’ve messed around quite a bit in zelda, did my third divine beast. i have to admit, guys. i just really fucking hate the weapon degradation system. combat in general in this game just isn’t a thing i enjoy at all. it’s very hard for me to get stuck in which is why it’s taking so long to finish it. i have to spend so much time breaking and changing weapons and i just really really don’t like that. and then hitting with the weapons isn’t fun and then they break again. which is a shame cause i like so many other things about it. exploration is like my favorite thing to do in games. if it wasn’t so bogged down by the stupid weapon system i’d be having a lot more fun. idk why this choice was made. it wasn’t a good one. at the very least they could have made things not be SO brittle so that it’s not SO VERY MUCH of the gameplay. but anyway. I like collecting all my little items and making little gear upgrades and throwing things in a pot and seeing what comes out, especially when it makes that little noise that means you did real good.
i also have finally got back to hadesgame. I remember why i stopped!!!!! because i feel like i’m hitting my head against a wall and not actually getting any better!!!!! but i have done lots of little side things, upgrades and relationships and prophecies and things. plus it’s just a really good time sink, which i’ve kind of needed lately. i could switch on god mode at any time, but i know i can succeed without it, i just… don’t know how. cause i am constantly not succeeding. blaaaaaaaah.
(playing it has made me need to listen to hadestown several more times tho. as an aside.)
i also started kentucky route zero. i like it a lot so far, but it’s like reading in that it’s not an instant gratification colors and noises game, it’s something i gotta focus on, so it’s been a bit slow. still, definitely my shit and i’m looking forward to seeing where it goes. might have slightly spoiled myself trying to find out if the dog dies but. whatever. the journey not the destination.
i’ve probably watched more stuff but i don’t really remember it. that’s probably the bulk of things from the last couple months anyway. happy august ig.

I see you posting about horror and I would love some recs if you have some to share 🙏
i just accidentally deleted a whole list fjahsjdasd i hate my life. anyways, i’m just gonna go ahead and assume you know the classics that get recommended all the time (the babadook, the ring, the exorcist, the vvitch, the conjuring, hereditary, the thing, insidious, etc.). here’s some underrated/indie horror movies i rarely see talked about (favs are in italics):
The not-actually-that-scary-but-still-good horror movies:
Let The Right One In (2008) – I mean, it’s literally my favorite movie/book and I have a tattoo of it, we been knew
Possum (2018) – I cannot even begin to tell you how much I adore this movie. Horror movies about CSA that explore it without once showing the actual rape, but still being terrifying/disturbing nonetheless?? Just an irish guy chilling with the puppet personification of his csa trauma????? Hells yeah (huge TW for spiders tho, i mean. I’m not scared of spiders but that fucking puppet is stil terrifying no matter how much I look at it)
Hard Candy has a soft spot in my heart. That’s my emotional support „ellen page tortures pedophiles“ movie
Thirst (2009)
Ravenous (1999) THE INHERENT ROMANTICISM OF BEING GAY AND CANNIBALS ON A MOUNTAIN. Brokeback mountain for cannibals
We Are What We Are (2010)
Marrowbone (2017)
The transfiguration (2016) – there’s so little vampire stories with black people, and i really loved how this wasn’t outright fantasy horror but had more of a ‚vampirism as an actual mental illness‘ approach
Nightbreed (1990) this movie IS lgbt cinema history
Gerald’s Game (2017) – we get it elena you love horror movies about the trauma of CSA
The autopsy of jane doe (2017) - i feel like this movie is perfect for horror fans who are tentative about seeing any big grotesque/gorey jumpscares
As Above, So Below (2014) (the first and so far only movie that got permission to film in the paris catacombs) (also good for starters)
The Actually-Scary (at least to me) movies:
Lake Mungo (2008) ((think of TMA’s The End)) (i deadass think about this movie so often, the story is so devastating and really stays in my head. also the bg ghosts)
The [REC] franchise!!! any of those movies fuck me up and are TERRIFYING (again ff)
I watched 30 Days of Night (2007) when it came out, when i was way too young, and it still to this day holds the spot for coolest vampire design (they modelled them after the jaws of white sharks!!! They’re supposed to be slavic strigoi) and also one of the only one times where i was actually scared by vampires
Livid (2011) (french horror movie!) (v gorey)
The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014) (found footage of a demonic mom – you’ll see a lot of FF on this list cuz i think it’s criminally underrated and terrifying if done well)
NOROI: The Curse (2005) ((ff))
Open water (2003) (this is scary to me because it’s based on a true story about a couple who went cave diving in the ocean with a guide who got LEFT BEHIND in the middle of the motherfucking ocean – with literally nothing to hold onto and no one even reporting them missing. Also, after i watched this i did a lil research and turns out there’s quite a lot of people ‚going missing‘ while taking swimming lessons where the guides will just drive to shore without them YEARLY. Fucked up if true) ((this has tma the vast vibes))
Clown (2014) (I recommend this to people who aren’t scared to like Eli Roth movies and think It Chap. 1 was boring)
Martyrs (2008) – a classic, this movie is bound to disturb you. It’s about child abuse and the survivors of child abuse enacting revenge, though it’s not the typical csa/anything similiar. HUGE tw for uhhhh, torture, self harm, mutilation etc..
Mama (2008) – the goth tattooed rocker chic jessica chastain movie
The bay (2012) (ff)
The last exorcism (2010) (ff)
The wailing (2016)
If you put on any V/H/S movie for me I’m guaranteed to shit my pants, so there’s that
May (2002) – i turned lesbophobic after watching this movie. About a lesbian obsessed with dolls i’ll say nothing more
The not-as-scary-but-still-scary-so-i-dont-wanna-put-them-in-the-first-list-in-case-i-traumatize-anyone movies:
Creep 1 & 2
The Strangers
The void (2016) ((tma the spiral))
The Hallow (2015)
The loved ones (2009) – a classic
Excision (2012) (if you liked raw)
Devil’s pass (2013)
Afflicted (2013) ((ff))
The cell (2000)
Session 9 (2001)
They Look Like People (2015)
The children (2008) – fuck them KIDS
The blackcoat’s daughter (2015)
I really liked Armie Hammer’s netflix original Wounds (2019)? IDK why. I found the story (albeit better suited as a short story) fascinating
Night Eats The World (2018) – another french movie! This time it’s about the inherent isolation and loneliness in locking yourself in a parisian apartment all alone with a bunch of zombies eating the rest of the world
Pontypool (2008)
The lure (2015) – yes, we’re polish, yes, we’re mermaids, yes, we eat men, yes, we also perform in a pop girl group WE EXIST!
I am not a serial killer (2016)
Green room (2015)
That’s it, pretty much.
#god i saw my life flash before my eyes when i accidentally deleted the whole reply. so i did it in word instead#pirategf

For the Vinny Mauro fluff can it be that him and the reader are having a lazy day watching movies, playing video games (five nights at freddy's, outlast, etc) and cuddling and just being really cute
Omg okay, so I know ive been hella inactive for the past few years, but im gonna try and post every so often. I really really hope you like this🥺🖤
Y/F/D= your favorite drink
Y/F/R= your favorite restaurant
y/n pov:
As I woke up, I held my hand out and felt my boyfriend Vinny still laying next to me, sleeping peacefully. I smiled wide and scooted closer to him. Giving him soft kisses on his back, and his neck to wake him up. He groans groggily and turns over, As I rubbed his side he slowly opens his eyes, peaking at me and smiling. "Good morning princess" he says reaching his hand out to grab onto my side pulling me even closer to him, I laugh softly while saying "good morning my love, how'd you sleep?" He groans again, opening his eyes wider to look at me "I slept okay, still a little tired though" he pauses for a minute "which is why I wanted to know if yiu wanted to have a lazy day? We can order some take out, maybe watch some of our favorite novies, maybe play some games?" I perk up and smile widely, moving quickly to slide onto his lap and give him a kiss, which he reciprocates as he laughs. He grabs ahold of my waist as he jumps at of our bed, he speed walks out of the room as im screaming and laughing loudly, he plops me down on our coach and tells me to wait there, he jokingly skips into the kitchen, grabbing the essential items, I turn and see him holding handfuls of snacks and some Y/F/D'S and of course some of our favorite food places menus, he sits down putting it all on our coffee table, smiling widely, I look up at him and give him multiple kisses on his face as he grabs me and holds me to his body, I twist around and grab some menus, looking over them. I excitedly choose Y/F/R. Opening the menu and wrapping my arms around his neck, playing with his long hair. We talk it over for awhile and finally call in a delivery order for what we wanted. He looks over at me and excitedly turns on our TV, pulling up Netflix, and pulling up the movie "The autopsy of jane doe" we cuddle up under a blanket , my head resting softly on his shoulder as he rubs up and down my arm, giving soft pecks to the top of my head, I smile softly, thinking abiut how in live I am with him
Vinnys pov:
I peer down at Y/N smiling softly as my heart swells at her. I get interrupted by our door bell ringing, i watch as she perks up and runs to grab our food excitedly, I laugh to myself, thinking its cute how happy she gets over things like that. She thanks the man and rushes back to her spot, pulling our food out and handing my order to me, we eat in a comfortable silence, only speakimg occasionally. Soon the credits roll on the movie and our meals are finished, I look at her and kiss her softly , rubbing my hands on her cheeks. She looks up at me and smiles, she softly says "i love you so so much, I'm so grateful to have you with me" I smile at her, kissing her again, this time filled with love "I love you so so much more baby, I can't believe i get to be with someone like you" she blushes and looks down, grabbing a game controller and handing it to me "can we play mario kart?" (Its lowkey my fav game don't judge me) I laugh loudly, looking down at her "of course honey, don't get mad when i beat you though" Y/N gasps loudly, smacking my chest playfully " oh you're so on!!" She laughs, jumping up and placing her legs over mine, and starting up the game. I rub her leg, and look at her one last time before starting to play.
fin.
Honestly I'm kinda rusty with writing so I'm sure this is super bad, but i really hope you guys enjoyed a semi fluff imagine, im sorry if there's any typos since im doing this on a phone

We Watch Scary Movies!
Last Updated: July 9, 2021
We (my husband and I) are always searching for films that are both high quality and scary. So, we decided to watch movies and score them based on SCARINESS (up to 10 points- we each score 1-5), QUALITY (up to 4 points), ORIGINALITY (up to 3 points) and REWATCHABILITY (up to 2 points) with an optional point for a good twist (up to 20 points raw). In addition to the raw score movies gain and/or lose a point if they were remade(+1) or if they are a remake (-1), This evens out "new movie bias". Finally, to avoid ties we incorporate critic (rotten tomatoes), audience (RT/IMDB) and horror movie fan ratings (reelscary) which are averaged and converted to add up to .9999 points. Below are our 50 best/scariest movies.

7. do you have a favorite horror movie?
well i think if we are talking pure horror my all time fave will always be the autopsy of jane doe. like its so perfectly scary and the twist is so perfectly captured and it makes me cry because i have female hysteria. i love her <333
12. what do you think is the best halloween film?
i think halloween movies should always be a little sillier than other horror movies, like thats the time of year for camp so im a big fan of either a return to classic slashers or like modern horror comedies like cabin in the woods or tucker and dale. this doesnt really answer the question but im a hot girl so

a/n: drabble dump time aka random stuff i just felt like writing! ft. spy!au, iwaizumi x fem!reader. all characters are aged up.
warnings: description of an explosion, presumed reader death, unedited. mainly angst
It’s not often that Iwaizumi wakes up like this, drenched in sweat, chest heaving, and lungs screaming desperately for oxygen. Anyone can agree that it’s never fun to wake up to a damp pillowcase and sheets that stick to skin, yet here he was, experiencing just that. What pisses him off more than anything is the fact that he knows the exact reason why he’s been acting this way. He knows the reason and yet, he’s unable to do anything about it.
When he shuts his eyes again, the vivid nightmare plays on his eyelids like the screen of a movie theatre. His vision fights to discern details through the smoke and dust, his ears are ringing from the blast, his feet stumble over broken concrete and cobblestone, his hands tremble in their hold on his spare pistol; he’s searching, pleading to an unknown force, that you’re around here somewhere.
He brings on hand up to use the collar of his shirt as a temporary dust filter. His choice of weaponry has never felt so heavy before, but he was trained to fight against the strain and the odds. You always stand back up. When you have no choice but to run, run. This was one of those moments where he’d be advised to run.
“Damn it, where the fuck are you?” Iwaizumi curses to himself, trudging through the half-collapsed building to find any sign of you. You had been too many meters away from him and out of his sight when the blast happened. There was no way for him to determine just exactly where it had come from, especially when the licks of flames behind were only growing higher and higher towards the skies. He was on a countdown to find you and get you safely to the rendezvous point, something he never thought he’d have to worry about.
He decides to take his chances and yells out your name, his voice cracking and breaking as the dust scratches at his throat like nails on a chalkboard. Gritting through the pain, he calls out again, looking in every possible direction. The earpiece in his right ear comes alive, static crackling before a familiar voice comes through.
“—jime, can you hear me? Hajime?”
“Fuck, yeah, I’m here, Kenma,” he bites, eyes still flitting everywhere.
“Are you okay? Where’s (y/n)?”
“Really fucking beat up, and trying to find her right now. I can’t see shit though.”
“Tooru’s coming around to the rendezvous point in three minutes and you need to be there. Local police and firemen are already on their way, we have to get you out.”
“Can you locate her?”
“Signal’s lost. She was last seen on the north side of the building.”
“Well fuck,” Iwaizumi groans as he recalls the layout of the building in his mind. That side’s entirely in flames, do you think…”
“She wouldn’t go down that easy. Two and a half minutes.”
“She has to be here somewhere,” Iwaizumi argues, tone becoming frantic. There’s nothing he can do but turn back towards the fire, desperate for any sort of clue. “(Y/n)! Are you there?”
He stumbles on the path once traveled, scouring the floor and in the rubble. Then his eyes catch a flash of rose gold, buried underneath fragments of brick and stone. His fingers and knees protest when he kneels down to push all of it aside, reaching to pick up the dust-covered chain. His heart sinks past his feet and into the earth beneath him when he gets a good look at the design.
In his hands is the very necklace he had gifted you months ago, one that you never took off, one that he had eyed and seen in many nights of passion, one that he had personally clasped underneath your hair. A thin rose gold chain holding a circular pendant of the same material, no larger than the size of your fingernail, with a small diamond suspended in the middle.
It can’t be.
“Hajime, ninety seconds. You need to get out of there.”
“But—”
“We’ll find her. You have to go.”
Iwaizumi takes one more look at the fires just a foot in front of him before standing back up and heading for the nearest exit. When he stumbles out, a sleek black vehicle pulls up and he wrenches open the passenger door. Not a second longer after his bottom hits the seat, Oikawa steps on the gas, the force aiding Iwaizumi in shutting the door. With deft skills and hands, his longtime friend secures an inconspicuous escape, merging onto the highway in the direction of their headquarter facilities.
Both ignore the incessant beeping from the car, the vehicle protesting the fact that Iwaizumi isn’t wearing his seatbelt. Oikawa only needs to take one look at the chain hanging from Iwaizumi’s fist to understand the situation, quickly letting Kenma know that the retrieval was a success and they were on their way back. His eyes take a glance in the rearview mirror to ensure no one is following them before addressing the elephant in the room.
“She probably made it out and went into hiding,” Tooru hypothesizes. “Maybe she left the necklace as a sign.”
“She better fucking have or she’ll never hear the end of it from me.”
“Must you be so harsh on your girlfriend, Iwa-chan?” He attempts to tease, but it falls flat. Iwaizumi lets out a staggered sigh and leans back against the seat, staring out the tinted window. His heart beats heavily against his ribcage, hoping that in the next few hours, you’ll securely contact them and let them know you’re safe and sound.
But night comes around and there’s no word from you. Iwaizumi can’t sleep, not when the other side of his bed is empty and cold. The morning sun peeks above the horizon as Iwaizumi downs his second cup of coffee, his phone out on the dining table, sitting silent and motionless. Even when Sugawara hands him a bowl of rice, miso soup and natto on the side, Iwaizumi only eats a few grains at a time. He skips his workout routine for the day, instead taking a seat silently by Kenma and scourges through the footage of the previous day’s events.
The hours turn into days, and the days turn into weeks. The agency begins to lose hope and when the two-month mark hits, Iwaizumi watches in despair as your photo in the database gets slapped with an ‘M.I.A.” stamp on it. Oikawa tries to convey his comfort and own pain through the hand placed on his friend’s shoulder. For the rest of the day, everyone who passes by Iwaizumi gives him their best apologetic look. He can only nod and train his gaze to the floor to avoid the pity. Losing a partner is never easy, and even more so when you’re romantically attached to them.
Yet inside his gut, he doesn’t believe it. Kenma had shown him the crime scene report as well as the autopsy results – all bodies found were accounted for and none of the samples matched to any characteristics describing you. There were no Jane Does, nothing that indicated you were there besides the necklace. Whether you had hacked into the database yourself before Kenma got to it or you had just simply disappeared into the flames, you were simply…gone. It just didn’t make sense and Iwaizumi needed to get down to the bottom of all of this. You were alive – he could feel it.
The head of the agency gives him fewer missions and often pairs him with Oikawa, the best person to keep him on his toes. Iwaizumi shuts off his emotions during these times, completely zoned in on the objectives and goals, senses on high alert. He trains and trains until his abs hurt and his arms are jelly, causing Daichi to forcibly lock him out of the gym and demand that he takes a day off. This happens more times than Iwaizumi can count on his fingers and toes, so he spends his free time searching for clues. Sometimes, even Kiyoko and Yachi come by to help.
He’ll find you. He has to.
-
Four months after the incident, Iwaizumi takes a train into a small town in Germany. Thankfully, there are very few people in his cart, and he looks like the odd visiting businessman. He’s got a messenger bag leaning against his body with a worn journal in his lap, one that he had found under the floorboards of your apartment. This was the third place your journal had strung him along to, and he was really hoping you would be here.
“You have two months,” the head told him. “If you don’t find her…”
You’ll need to give up.
The unspoken words had left a bad taste in Iwaizumi’s mouth. He was a month in and beginning to lose his sanity. Reading your journal made him realize how there was so much he hadn’t learned about you, yet you knew so much about him. Had he given over his heart too easily? Were you toying with him? Did you even want to be found?
The train comes to a stop, ripping him away from his thoughts. He steps off and looks around before spotting the street he wanted. Down that road would lead him to the main plaza of the town, the one that had been vaguely mentioned in your writings. Iwaizumi begins setting himself up for disappointment so the pain would be more bearable if he doesn’t find you here in the next few days.
It’s about a 15 minute walk – cream-colored houses in an old European style tower over him as he ambles down the curvy street. He passes by bikers and crepe stands, sometimes the occasional antique store. The ambient noise of nature begins to melt into sounds of spoken word, Iwaizumi’s first sign that he’s nearing the plaza. Eventually, the street opens up into a large square. He’s greeted by restaurants and gelato shops, many people enjoying the fresh air in the outdoor seating. Children run around playing with balloons and each other, no care in the world except for their current enjoyment. Iwaizumi looks around and freezes.
There you are, sitting at a shaded table by a café, sipping on what he presumes to be a latte. A book is spread open on the metal surface and you haven’t noticed him yet. He drinks in all your features, noticing your hair color has changed and your face thinner than before. But despite these concerning changes, you still look as beautiful as ever to him.
He can’t believe it. He finally found you.
As though you felt his eyes, you look up from your book in his direction. They bore right into yours and you process all the emotions running through him. There’s confusion, pain, determination, exhaustion, but most of all, there’s love. Your heart aches at the sight of him – with no doubt in the world, there was nothing, no one you missed more than Iwaizumi Hajime, the love of your life. But it’s too early for him to find you. There was something that you needed to do, and you had to do it alone. For him.
Iwaizumi watches you warily stand from your chair. Your body is tense and ready to act, and he recognizes that stance all too well. No, don’t – !
You run.
But he’ll be damned if he doesn’t chase after you.

Chapter 7
Kent
The energy at BPD had shifted. At least, it had in the homicide department. As soon as they had accepted that Korsak was retiring, Jane announced that she was moving to DC to pursue a different career. Maura was taking sabbatical to try and write. And that left Kent feeling conflicted. His friends were leaving. Of course, he could make more, or hang out with other departments within BPD. And he was taking over for Dr. Isles, which would give him immense experience in the field. But something about the first group who had gotten to know him all leaving at once had him feeling unsteady.
They had been spending their nights at the Dirty Robber, reminiscing. The first few days, he stayed away, giving them the space they would need to move on. But on the fourth day, Jane called him out in the autopsy room, turning her attention from Maura to address him. “Why haven’t you stopped by even once this week?” Her hands rested on her belt, and her eyebrows raised, waiting for his response.
“I didn’t want to intrude.”
Jane snorted, her voice getting quieter. “Well that’s a first.” Despite her words, her face bore the hint of a smile, made brighter when the Medical Examiner she had interrupted began to giggle.
“Oh, come on, Kent. You don’t intrude.” Maura added in, her head tilted as she looked at her colleague.
Jane relaxed her stance, her arms falling to her sides. “In fact, you’re the only one who hasn’t come. It feels like someone’s missing.”
“That was never my intention,” Kent replied, shuffling the file in his hands back and forth, “I’ll stop by after work tonight.”
Jane grinned. “We’ll save you a seat.” At her words Kent nodded, walking forward to give Dr. Isles the test results she needed, before leaving the room and the two women alone again.
They called it an early night. The case was solved, no one had called, and everyone had been putting in overtime, so there was no harm in going home early. Kent went straight to the Dirty Robber from work, hoping to not be late. Frankie and Nina beat everyone there, grabbing a table towards the back. They waved him over with a smile, Nina even standing to offer him a hug. “Glad you finally came!”
Kent embraced Nina before sitting in a free seat next to Frankie. “Yeah, sorry for the miscommunication.” At Frankie’s confused look, Kent elaborated. “I thought it was only family.”
At this Nina laughed. “I’m here.”
“You’re dating Frankie.”
“Korsak.” Her partner chimed in.
“Owns the bar.”
“Do you think that means anything on nights like these?” Frankie paused to take a sip of his beer. “Besides, you have put up with us for long enough. You’re family.” Frankie waved down the waitress and pointed at their new addition, prompting her to come over and take Kent’s drink order.
Kent took a moment to let the Detective’s words sink in. This, he was finding, was the beauty of BPD. As an impulsive kid who said things and acted without thinking, fitting in had been hard. Here, he had found a group that didn’t judge him for his quirks, that wanted him to tag along. It was nice to know that his inclusion would continue even with all the changes coming up. Looking around, he took a sip of his whiskey. “So where are the girls?”
“They’ll be here,” Nina answered, looking toward the door, “Maura makes Jane pack a box first.”
“Sounds about right.” Kent responded with a chuckle. “They really do have a peculiar relationship.”
“I’ll say.” Angela’s voice came from behind him, making him jump. She pulled out the chair next to Kent, sitting in it and leaning toward Frankie and Nina. “Did you know that Maura has already mapped the route from Boston to DC?”
“Of course she has.” Frankie answered, grabbing a roll from the center of the table. “She’s not gonna be okay with phone calls and Skype. Too impersonal.”
“I’m not even okay with that.” Angela answered, scooting her chair to make room for the newly arrived Korsak. “But I know this is a good move for Jane, and I want her to be happy.”
“Yes, but you don’t love her.” Kent said it before thinking, as per usual, and every face at the table looked at him with eyebrows furrowed. “I mean, of course you love her, you’re her Mother. Sorry. I just mean, you don’t love Jane like Maura does.” Instead of the shock he was expecting, everyone at the table nodded in agreement. It brought him comfort to realize that the little glances he’d noticed, their closeness, their body language, was not imagined by him.
Before Kent could elaborate, the front door opened and Maura walked in. She greeted them all with a smile, her eyes showing a hint of sadness, and she took a seat next to Frankie. She addressed her colleague first, placing her purse on the floor by her feet. “Kent! I’m glad you finally came!”
“Of course. Again, sorry for the misunderstanding.” Moments later, Jane entered, the last to arrive, and took the last seat between Korsak and Maura. “And since I’ve missed a few meetings, the first round is on me.”
“I knew we invited you for a reason!” Jane grinned and waved down the waitress, who came right over with her regular beer. “Sorry it took us so long today. Maura was helping me downsize my box of shoes.”
“Well, it doesn’t make sense to keep shoes without matches.” The Doctor was defensive, but had a hint of a giggle in her voice.
“Why do you have so many mismatched shoes, Janie?” Angela's voice had a tone only a mother could achieve, which made Kent smile into his drink.
"I think a lot of them are left over from when I was on the drug unit?"
It was his pragmatic boss who asked the question on Kent's mind. "What was it about the drug unit that made you lose so many shoes?"
"Yeah, did you lose them chasing down suspects?" Angela asked, still concerned about the mismatched shoes.
“No. I never wanted to wear my nice heels, you know, just in case. So I had a lot of cheap ones.” She grimaced. “Very uncomfortable. I shopped around for some that would fit better. So I ended up with a ton of inexpensive heels. I haven’t gone through them in ages. I honestly think I lost most of them in the fire.”
“Well, now you get to leave town with a much lighter load.” The honey-haired woman tipped her head. “You’re welcome.” This elicited a snort from Jane, her eyes rolling slightly as she took a sip of her beer.
Kent, being one of the newcomers to the group, hadn’t heard of Jane’s time in the drug unit. And he still wasn’t sure how the drug unit led to more shoes. “Wait, why did you need so many heels for the drug unit, but get to wear your trademark boots in homicide?”
“I had to do buy busts, and had to dress the part. That’s how Maura and I met.”
The Doctor’s hazel eyes grew wide and her mouth fell. “Don’t tell him that story.”
“What story?” Kent asked, his interest piqued.
The answer came from Angela. “Maura thought Jane was a hooker.”
As Maura sputtered to find her words, Kent and Nina watched with amusement, clearly the only ones out of the loop. The stunned Doctor turned to her friend, her voice high-pitched and playful. “I can’t believe you told your Mother!”
“Well of course I did!” Jane shouted, glancing in Angela’s direction. “I can’t lie to my Mother! What kind of person do you think I am?” This caused Frankie and Maura to laugh, with Angela watching them, a knowing look on her face. After a few moments, she refocused her attention on Kent. “So the first time we met was at Division One, and Maura thought I was really a hooker. But about two months later I was promoted to homicide. My first day, Maura came upstairs and said something to Korsak about meeting the new Detective. She walked in, saw me at the desk, and immediately turned around and headed for the elevator.”
Maura laughed, her face turning red. “I was mortified!”
Jane continued, “Two weeks later we caught our first big case. On the scene she barely talked to me. She addressed Korsak more often than not. And she wouldn’t look me in the eye. I tried not to let it bother me, but let’s be honest, it bothered me. So Korsak and I started working this case the best way we could. Figuring out known associates, tracking down threats, mapping her movements, that sort of thing. And at some point he tells me to go see if Maura had found anything.”
Korsak leaned forward, excited to add his own part to the story. “Jane was like, ‘don’t send me down to her! She thinks I’m a prostitute, she won’t even look at me!’” His voice was a higher pitch as he mocked his former partner, making Frankie laugh and Jane glare.
“Are we done with your spot on impersonation?” She asked before continuing, waiting for the laughter of her colleagues to die down. “So, I went down to autopsy, walked in, and said something about being sent by Korsak to get information. Maura started rattling off time of death, potential murder weapons, and possible defensive wounds. Very clinical, with a lot of words I didn’t understand. In the middle of this, she stops, looks at me, and said, ‘you made a convincing prostitute.’”
“No way!” The interruption came from Nina, whose mouth was wide open as her eyes flicked between the two women.
Kent addressed his boss. “You didn’t.”
“I didn’t mean it like that!”
Jane laughed, continuing. “See, now that I know you, I get that you didn’t mean it like that. But at the time, I was wondering who died and made you Queen Bitch. I managed to hold my tongue, and forced out an, ‘excuse me?’” She refocused her attention on Kent. “So now Maura started sputtering, apologizing, and she started to get splotchy, and I knew something was wrong. So I offered to start over.”
Maura joined in with a laugh, her face returning to it’s normal color. “I made her leave the autopsy room, and told her to give me a little bit.”
Jane nodded. “I must have stood outside for five minutes or so. When I came back in, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. Maura was standing at her computer, looking at a chart. So I walked over, held out a hand, and introduced myself.”
“And just like that, you forgot her assertion from earlier?” The Scotsman watched them as he asked, watching as they shared a look. Jane resolved, Maura curious. He wondered how much they talked about this meeting.
“Honestly, it still stung. But I think it was what she said afterward that helped me understand what she was trying to say.”
“I told her that I had looked her up. That her conviction rate was impressive, and that she must have been convincing undercover.” Maura took ownership of the narrative, looking at her friend, watching Jane’s kind smile as she remembered. “I think we began mentoring each other first. Jane learned a lot about science from me. I learned how to talk to people from her. The friendship blossomed from there.” They both shared a soft smile, a tad bit sad, before turning back to their companions.
Kent made sure to give them a moment before speaking. “Well, that is the most interesting origin story I’ve ever heard. You two should have a comic book.”
“Oh! I have one of those!” Jane shouted to the laughs of her colleagues. This led to the reminiscing Kent was expecting, some of their favorite cases. Angela went back to working after listening to them talk about the clown case. Korsak left after Jane and Maura talked about cutting open Maura’s leg, citing Kiki waiting for him at home. Frankie and Nina left after recounting the case at the Pilgrims stadium. Which soon left only the two women, and Kent at that little table. He hadn’t realized the predicament that would put him in until it was too late.
“Kent.” His boss looked at him, her face serious. “With only a couple weeks left, maybe you want to finish some unfinished business?” Her eyes darted to the woman next to her, then back to him.
Jane rolled her eyes. “Maur, no.”
“Well, I’m trying to figure out why he expressed interest in you, then never acted on it!”
"I'm not interested in Jane." The reply was more forceful than he intended, and the Detective faked a hurt expression. "No offense."
Maura looked between the two of them, puzzled. "Well then, why did you ask me if you could date someone from the police department?"
It hit him in an instant what she was referring to, and now he had to scramble to figure out what to say. "Not because I wanted to date Jane."
"Well then, to whom were you referring?"
His reluctance to speak egged the Detective on, who leaned forward with interest. "Yeah, whom?"
"We can keep a secret."
"I'm leaving soon, no one in DC is gonna care. Just tell us who you like!”
The two women egged him on like schoolgirls and drowned out his train of thought. He couldn't tell them that he had asked to figure out their relationship. And he couldn't think of a plausible interest other than the one he'd suppressed for over a year. As their chorus of voices grew louder he fought to hear his own consciousness, the voices inside telling him to lie. The problem was, the two women were too loud to let him figure out the name of any other female Detectives. So for the first time, he let his secret slip. “Frankie. I wanted to ask out Frankie.”
Their voices stopped abruptly. Maura’s mouth hung open in shock, her eyes wide as she searched his face. Jane however, sat straight as a board, her mouth pursed shut as she glanced over at her friend. Kent began counting the seconds, waiting for them to speak.
It was Jane who broke first. The Detective flashed him a soft smile, dropping her shoulders and leaning forward. "Trust me, after living with my brother for way too long, you dodged a bullet." At her response, he let out the breath he'd been holding, allowing himself to laugh with the two women. "I mean, he had all these rules, took super long showers, and still never told me where his secret drawer is!"
"He didn't tell me either. And I'm an excellent secret keeper." The ME punctuated her sentence with a sip of her wine, a knowing glance shot toward her best friend.
"Speaking of that," Kent started, leaning forward, "you can keep that one, right?"
She answered in the affirmative. "My lips are sealed."
"Nothing against him, I just don't want to make things weird. He's a good friend." The two women nodded, and he noticed the way Maura pursed her lips together, like she was holding something back. "Besides, I have the utmost respect for Nina, and their relationship."
Jane nodded, her fingers running along the bottom of her beer bottle. "I get it. Your secret is safe with us." She finished the last sip, and tapped the table twice with her free hand. "As much as I would love to stay and chat, I really should pack some more things. And throw out some more shoes." She pushed the empty bottle, turning her attention first to Kent. "I hope you'll join us again tomorrow?"
"Yeah, I wouldn't miss it."
"Good." She turned to Maura. "And I'll see you bright and early."
Maura nodded. "Yes, I'll get coffee and be over around eight. Drive safe, Jane."
Kent definitely noticed the Detective squeeze Maura's shoulder as she left, her fingers waiting as long as possible to let go. The soft smile reserved almost exclusively for Maura, with just a hint of sadness in her dark eyes. He observed Maura watch the door for several seconds after her friend left, seeming far away although she sat only inches from him. And his question was out before he could stop it. "Have you told her you love her?"
Maura took in this question like she took in new data, her eyebrows pulled together as she gazed just past him, trying to put the info in line with the narrative in her brain. "I tell Jane that I love her all the time. It's perfectly natural to be affectionate with your friends."
"No, I mean," he paused, wondering for a moment if he should end the conversation before it was too late, "have you told Jane that you are in love with her?"
Again, she took in his words, trying to make them make sense. For a split second, Kent saw acceptance, her jaw set, her eyes widened. But soon that look became anger, with glaring eyes and a hard swallow. “I am not in love with Jane.”
“Well then, you’ve got me fooled. And I assume you’ve fooled yourself.”
Her eyes widened at his hesitancy to back down. “Well, you know what they say about those who assume.” She finished her glass of wine in one sip, pushing her chair back simultaneously. “I don’t think it’s fair of you to assume how I feel, Dr. Drake. And I don’t need to sit here and listen to it. See you in the office.” With that, she turned and stormed out of the bar.
It didn’t take long for Angela to come over, using his tab as an excuse to pry. “What happened?”
“I pointed out that she loves Jane.”
Angela started laughing, the high-pitched sound helping Kent feel calm, despite his realization that work would be tough the next day. “I always wondered who would break it to them first.” She patted him on the back before taking his card. “You’ll be alright.”
________________________________________________________________
The next day, Kent went out of his way to avoid Dr. Isles. If she entered the room he was in, he’d leave through the opposite door. If he couldn’t leave, he would study results on his computer, so he looked busy. He spent more time in the bathroom in one day than he had for the entire week. Towards the end of the day, DNA results came in. Matter found under the fingernails of a John Doe. He could have just emailed them to her, kept his contact at a minimum. But a small part of him wanted to see how much trouble he was actually in. So this he carried into her office, to deliver in person.
Dr. Isles was sitting at her desk, reading something on her computer. He knocked, making her look up, and waved the file in the air as he entered. “DNA results from under the victim’s fingernails.”
“Thank you.” She held out a hand for the file, took a moment to look it over, and reached for her phone. “I’ll forward this to Jane.” Her response was curt, but she didn’t seem angry. Thinking he had overreacted, Kent nodded and started to leave. “Wait.” Her voice was more forceful, and made him turn around. Dr. Isles’ face was set, very little emotion showing as she gestured for a chair. “Please sit.” Kent did as she asked, his hands folded in his lap, and awaited whatever she was going to tell him.
Dr. Isles took a moment, looking past him as she gathered her thoughts. “Well first of all, I owe you an apology. I think I implied that you were an ass.”
As she spoke, her shoulders fell, making her appear less harsh, and making Kent relax in turn. “You did. But you were right, I shouldn’t assume.”
"You shouldn't. We don't leap to conclusions in our line of work. We wait for the science to determine the facts, and draw our conclusions from there."
"Absolutely," Kent nodded, "I hear you loud and clear."
Dr. Isles gave him a decisive nod as she sat back in her seat. "Well, I was up all night analyzing the data, and it appears that you were right. I'm in love with Jane."
Kent had to suppress a giggle at her words, somewhat surprised it took her this long to figure it out. As he did he noticed the slump of her shoulders and the hint of bags under her eyes, remnants of her sleepless night. "Can I ask you what the deciding data points were?"
"Well, she's very symmetrical, so aesthetically pleasing. I've always known she's attractive." It was the most logical place to start, and her eyes drifted as she figured out what to say. "She has this incredible way of understanding me that I have always admired. Very few have stuck around to help me in social situations I don't understand. She's selfless and brave, in ways I wish I could be. She takes care of me." Dr. Isles' face broke into a wide grin. "Her smile is infectious. She is infectious. I just want to spend as much time as I can with her. Everything makes sense with her. She's the only one who can touch me when I'm very upset, and she can calm me down. And then I started really thinking." She paused, her head coming down as she looked at Kent and addressed him for the first time since she started talking about Jane. "I'm sad Korsak is retiring. The squad room will be different. Our lives may drift apart. And I'm okay with that. It's natural. But imagining life here without Jane," a pause, her fists curling on top of the desk, "it puts knots in my stomach. It feels like I'm losing a limb, and things won't be the same. Does that make sense?"
Kent nodded, understanding exactly what she was saying. "Your heart is breaking. It makes perfect sense." Kent watched her nod and swallow, seemingly relieved that what she was feeling made sense. "So what do you plan to do about it?"
"What can I do?” Her hands turned upward and her voice cracked. “This opportunity is wonderful for her. It’s perfect for her family, it gets her out of harm’s way, and she earned it. If I tell her, and she backs down, does that make me selfish? Or what if I tell her, and it ruins everything? And I lose this friendship, and the family that I’ve been graciously allowed to join? It’s a terrible thought to lose Jane, but I can’t also lose Angela, Frankie, Tommy, and TJ.” Her thumb kept tapping on her fingers, counting people she cared about but didn’t name out loud. People connected to her through Jane. “So I’m doing nothing. I’m pretending I never realized I love her. I’ll support her as she moves, call her daily, and hope that she doesn’t forget about me as she builds a new life.”
Kent could hear the anguish in his boss’ voice, the finality of her decision weighing him down. This wasn’t what he intended when he asked his question the previous night. “She won’t forget you.” It was the best he could offer to comfort her. “I suspect she feels the same.”
Dr. Isles let out a soft chuckle, shaking her head. “No, Jane has only ever been interested in men. Even now, she’s been chatting with some agent out in DC.”
“I’m sorry, Maura.”
“Don’t be.” She laughed, flashing him a knowing look. “This is why we shouldn’t fall for straight people.”
Kent laughed along with her. “We never learn.” Kent gave his boss time to relax, telling her jokes and stories to cheer her up. They soon switched gears, discussing everything they had learned about the case, Kent leaving her office with new orders for tests to run and a promise he would see her that night at the bar. He did join them again. Armed with new information, he watched them interact. Maura’s slight hesitation to touch Jane, like she was second guessing her every move. Jane, oblivious to the fact that Maura was studying her, the curves of her face, her expressions as she talked. And the deepening heartache written all over Maura’s face.
What had he done?
