One thing has been bothering me a lot in many Hazbin Hotel reviews/analysis I've been seeing: the idea that Vivziepop hired "celebrities" to voice the characters and that it somehow cheapens the end product. (I don't have enough information about what went down between her and the old VAs from the 2019 pilot, so I'll refrain from commenting on that.)

This is a musical animated series backed by A24. It would not feel out of place at all for Vivziepop to cast musical theater performers as the characters in her show, as so many animated series and movies have done since Menken and Ashman changed Disney's (and other animation studios') approach to storytelling in the 90's. None of the VAs attached to the Hazbin Hotel credits can be considered "celebrities" in the normal use of that word - that is: their voices are not immediately recognizeable by the public at large and their names alone are not able to sell the show. The only performer who Viviziepop hired that fits the bill would be Kesha in Helluva Boss, the independent animated series that is not attached to this Amazon/A24 project. I think the most recognizeable name in the main cast is either Stephanie Beatriz or Keith David - and most people will remember them as "that woman from Brooklyn Nine-Nine" or "Dr. Facilier's Voice Actor", not by their own media personas.

Besides, it feels a bit dismissive when people just say they're "celebrities" and not, you know, actors who are doing the jobs they've been hired for. Keith David himself, for example, is an accomplished veteran actor, singer AND voice actor for many beloved roles - and he STILL is not recognized enough for his incredible range.

I understand that many fans are very attached to the original VAs (and that's completely valid, they are incredibly talented as well), but it feels kind of ridiculous to say that Vivziepop made the "wrong" choice here by casting a different set of performers in these roles.

Also: "Vivziepop should have saved the money she used on the Broadway VAs and given it to the animators!" I want animators to be paid fair wages just as much as anyone else, but this is not how the budget distribution for these types of projects work. You do know this is not how it works, right? Right?

I really feel you & anon about KenDraws - when the first allegations about poor workplace treatment came out I thought maybe it was a case of poor management over malicious mismanagement; that a new indie studio had hired a lot of people out of college and not supported them properly or set unrealistic deadlines and failed to account for the fact that people have to work multiple jobs to support themselves (though the sharing of Erin's medical info always disgusted me and there's no way anyone can 'two sides' that imo) - i.e. it was stuff they could learn from and get better about, but for me KenDraws' account was the straw that broke the camel's back.

My jaw was on the floor learning KenDraws was the one who suggested Alastor stay at the hotel for his own entertainment, because that's part of the inciting incident and setup of the whole show. It's the kind of idea and dynamic that you'd expect the creator to come up with and come up with first, and be thought out as part of the story going forwards.

And to credit such an integral part of the show, plus several jokes, as 'additional writing'??? That is not additional writing, that is concept writing and script writing. It really made me mad to see how much of a struggle it was to get even that bare minimum of credit when Viv dropped so many ideas and lines that weren't her idea into the final pilot and covered it up with 'that was early draft stuff/we changed things around'. Reading the Discord logs it's blatantly not that, and if I can get ad hominem for a second there's a really maddening 'I'm too lazy and untalented to come up with this on my own, please help me' wheedling tone in Viv's messages to Ken - the whole 'I'm good at this and not that' thing especially. If you aren't good at it then either focus the pilot around your supposed strengths or credit your co-writers properly! Anyone whose had someone lazy or untalented sponge off them knows how uncomfortable and annoying it is to be stuck with someone like Viv as a boss. It feels like the main reason Brandon gets to be credited as a writer is because he's already a 'name' but anyone Viv considers beneath her it's free game to steal their ideas and fail to credit them when they provide her massive amounts of help because she knows her fandom will merrily throw them under the bus with a minimum amount of prompting from her, and sometimes none at all.

It's why I'm so glad to see Ashley and Michael thrive outside her shadow. I've seen mixed opinions on Faustisse and I'm not up to date with that, but I did see the screenshots about the issues she had getting paid and assuming that's Viv she's talking about, no one deserves to be exploited like that.

Viv mistreats the talent, they go elsewhere - and they don't stop being better than Viv at the thing she's failing so hard at rn. I'm so glad to see the rest of the indie animation scene supporting each other so much: I think this is the sense of community people wished for when Helluva started and why the biggest scandal to hit the fandom felt like it was when the pilot VAs got dropped so unceremoniously. It's just partly a community of people who got burned working for Viv who now have a perfect mental model of what they don't want in their working lives so they can make something better. I hope all the best for the people she's hurt & used

Cinderella, the version it's adapted from, is from France I think, in like, 16something? Beauty and the beast is also set in France, with a fairly distinct time period,

Sleeping beauty is a little more generic medieval but, it's still a preexisting story with a foundation to build on,

Compared to making something entirely new where they have all the room to play around in the designs without needing to worry about drastically changing the setting

That's what I was critizising in the first place: there's too much saying hey my movie is set between North Africa and Southern Iberia, I even have an anthropologist to make everything super accurate, I'm representing these peoples that have actually never appeared on a Disney animated movie before!! And then we have plain costumes that have nothing to do with the region - same with the architecture and everything -, none of the VA came from there, and basically Disney is using North Africa to sell its movie while making it English-fairytale-like to sell dolls because no culture from North Africa is good enough for its merchandising.

It bums me that the Sonic VAs got nothing for the Sonic movie. At least the Mario one gave Charles Martinet something to do even if they're side characters. Mike Pollock has been voicing Eggman since Shadow the Hedgehog and he got Jack. Same with Smith and Griffith. Could have at least had Knuckles dad be played by Dan Green or Travis Willingham or something (note I love Christopher Lloyd)

Oh trust me, my friend, I am right there with you. It gets worse with the addition of Tails. He is still voiced by his og actress, Colleen O'Shaughnessey. And let me tell you right now, the difference in talent and competency when you put Tails and Ben Schwartz into the same scene together is night and day. (Here's their literal first scene together to prove it.)

(And to anyone who thinks I'm giving Mr. Schwartz a hard time... i mean, fair enough. I am. But you can't tell me he has given ANYTHING to Sonic that he didn't already do in DuckTales (2017) as Dewey Duck, and as Jean-Ralphio Saperstein before the both of them in Parks &. Recreation, which is the entire point of why I viscerally dislike him as a voice actor very specifically. It'd be fine if he stayed in his lane, you know, as a comedian, but he didn't, so he's getting my full criticism. Especially where Sonic is concerned.)

Jason Griffith most likely would have been pleased to come back to Sonic. I mean he voice acted for the guy for seven years and is HIGHLY beloved by the Sonic fandom to this day. Especially for his work on SonicX. Roger Craig Smith is IMMENSELY talented and has been voicing Sonic for over ten years now, and is so good at his job that he is STILL voicing Sonic despite the franchise's setbacks and his own announcement of leaving the role. Because he's good at it and he's passionate about it. (I personally love RCS more than Jason. Not that Jason is bad by any means but RCS is underrated imo.)

I'm not as well versed in this, but there's ALSO the fact that Knuckles' voice actors didn't get hired to voice the echidna either. They hired Idris Elba, and some people were saying was going to be fantastic in the role, and you know what? In my opinion, he sucked. He absolutely bombed it. And I say that knowing how well he does on screen in an acting role because I have watched him play Heimdall for 10+ years. He HAS talent, but is NOT a voice actor. And he certainly is not a good fit for Knuckles the Echidna. He didn't even come anywhere close to emulating Knuckles' voice.

And then you get the argument of "oh but the voices don't have to be the same" — my sweet summer children... The joy of voice acting and animated characters is that it DOES all come down to the voice and the voice matches the character design. The voice is the ENTIRE SELLING POINT. You don't get the voice right, then the entire acting fails and no animation talent can save it. It sucks but it's true. (As someone who had to struggle to find a fitting voice for my thesis' film's main villain this is such a priority that people overlook. Good enough isn't good at all.)

Honestly though, the real kicker here is that the Sonic franchise should never have been a "live action" film at all. I loathe "live action remakes" of animated films no matter what they are. I especially hate CGI/live action fusions that make that the selling point when Roger Rabbit proved that it can be done much better with 2D/hand-drawn animation. (To a lesser extent: compare the og. Space Jam with the remake, or even Space Jam with the og Smurfs. The quality difference all these years past is not even comparable.)

Also, it's not even a "live action remake", because, spoiler alert, the characters are still animated and no amount of life-like special effects will change that.

Hollywood (and America as a whole) needs to quit disrespecting animation and calling it "for kids" when it is a medium. It always has been.

besides the OBVIOUS blasphemy and biblical inaccuracies, the show does have a lot of issues with writing and pacing. I didn't laugh at ANY joke in those 4 episodes (though Angel calling Vaggie the actual V word almost got me for some stupid reason 🤷‍♀️)

I don't like some of the VA changes they did, Vaggie sounds bland, Husk's voice doesn't really fit the design of the character IMO, and even tho she isn't a big/important character I DO NOT LIKE THE NEW VOICE THEY GAVE KATIE KILLJOY. I got used to all the other VAs, and kinda prefer the new voice for Alastor over the old. also I would like to congratulate the show for being the first to make canon ships feel like unbelievable cringe fanon ships (the cat and spider, and snake and cherry)

I'll also sometimes scroll through the tag on twitter to see what's going on and what criticisms other people have, like with the whole Angel Poison episode (and which imo when she hires a storyboarder that has a r4p3/n0nc0n f3t1sh to do it, I think that's pretty messed up)

and of course I find out in the episodes I haven't seen they added St Peter and made him a white guy with blond hair, same with making Adam white (I dunno if Adam coulda been darker irl but 🤷‍♀️) as I said in a post on twitter, it's clear Vivz has some animosity towards Christians/Christianity so she's gonna twist and be inaccurate. (true accuracy wouldn't even allow her show to exist, as Adam's song has some truth in it "Hell IS forever" so there'd be no chance of redemption)

A strange detective covers a lot of ground, so I went with a noir Sherlock Holmes. I don't know, the thought of a melodramatic noir detective in Dragon Age is so out of place it humors me greatly.

You first met in the Hinterlands when Berand asked the herald to find his lover. They found you over her body reading the letter and you quickly explained you found her like this and needed to find her lover. When they told you where he was you got really sad claiming the hunt and satisfaction of finding him was gone.

You joined them to deliver the news a little displeased but immediately perked up when the party off-handily mentioned this was the second person you were hired to find. Excited you asked who they were and joined the inquisition.

Through all of this Varric wanted to laugh. He knew he shouldn't think this was funny in the middle of a war but you were so strange and Trevelyan thought so as well.

Working for the inquisition satisfied your inquisitive nature. Whenever there was a person or object to find you were on the case and you solved them quite quickly.

Because of the ongoing war with templars and mages you were always busy. So much so you never really talked to the inner-circle or anyone really that much not until after Haven is attacked. During the journey to Skyhold it was Varric who checked on you. He had never seen you distraught about anything unrelated to your work. While everyone is getting settled he notices no one really checks on you so he takes it upon himself to do so.

He learns quite a bit during your talks. Proper checking for cause of death, deducting suspects, talking to the victim's family. You also have more personal talks explaining how much you enjoy your job, your extreme highs and lows, your close relationship with death, your need to figure things out and how all of these things make it difficult to be palatable to others.

You also learn about him. He doesn’t really say much about himself that's not cryptic but for you he doesn't need to. Not saying you fully understand, you probably never will, but you get a general idea. As much as you want to press for detail or find a paper-trail you know he wouldn't like that and a stepping stone in your relationship is you learning to be content with that. (And no, he won't tell you the story of Bianca.)

At some point he writes a book that is based off of you. It becomes very popular even to people outside of his fans because it is one of the only book of his where the main character survives and has regular wins, a lot of losses but consistent wins. It wasn't hard to write, he mostly just rewords what you tell him and embellishes it.

A lot of people saw the change of the MC over time. MC started as a strange excitable person obsessed with solving intricate crimes who was petty and difficult to deal with but later turns out to be a person isolated because of their eccentric nature and constantly working because it allows their mind to run as fast as it can without waiting for others.

Readers also noticed when there was a growing romantic tension, like they were suddenly reading this character in the most flattering light. But they had no love interest. It's not very clear if Varric was envisioning his lack of romance or yours. (Cassandra picks up on it and is ate it up)

The only real reason he allowed it to be published was because his beta-readers loved it to pieces and he knows you won't read it due to your lack of time and lack of interest in it. You hate when writers get something wrong but specifically in Varric's case you already knew what happens. And your right, your not going to find anything new other than things he embellished.

By then people have kind of sniffed out the growing interest you both have. An interest you both don't seem to want to act on. Varric's self-loathing is infamous, he would never give himself a happy ending and you know this. You also have reservations due to your very dangerous job and insane working habits. You both are quite content to keep what you both know unsaid.

It gets to a point the inner-circle start to intervene. They don't succeed but they try. Trevelyan gives you less work so you have more free time but having less work pisses you off big time. Cassandra tries to get you to read his books but you keep telling her no and Varric is irked by her attempts. Cole tries to fix your hurts but for both of you it's too little too late. Josephine and Leliana get you to social events but Varric is a socialite and entertains crowds and you are known as a very impressive detective and a main character in a book, you both occupied the whole night. Depending if your fem or masc, Sera or Dorian will ask if you need any advice for the bedroom to which annoyed you. Vivienne got peeved enough to invite you to a spa day and brought Varric along with her, apparently he was under the same impression, so out of spite you both enjoyed your time using her paid day off to do nothing. Even Blackwall and Solas try to ask if either of you are interested in someone, though they're a lot more teasing.

Funny enough Iron Bull is the only one content on letting things play out. He knows something would need to happen for the spark to turn into a flame.

The beginning of your official romance is not very romantic I'm afraid. You leave on a particularly interesting case and don't come back. And he panics. Fully thinks your dead but doesn't give up on trying to find you. He asks news from the scouts, checks taverns and towns when he goes out, even asks Cole if he knows where you are. Cole says, "Panicked, prancing like a headless chicken, they're probably scared as I am. Or maybe their fine. Or maybe their dead. Just another regret. My answer won't soothe your hurt no matter the what I say." He knows the kid is right. If he said you were perfectly safe he would doubt it and if he said you were unsafe or dead he would never forgive himself.

When you come back bloodied and bruised it's almost like you never left. No one reacts and you don't want them to. Because of this Varric doesn't know you’re back. He spots you sitting on the battlements and runs. You turn to see a flushed sweating dwarf staring at someone he's not sure is a ghost, like if he blinks you’ll wisp away. The conversation starts like all the others and for a long time you sit casually talking. A long pause is broken by Varric, "You scared me." to which you replied a quiet I know, and silence takes over once more. You put your hand on his and he pulls you into a hug. When you pull away you look at each other and with no words see everything unsaid. Neither of you knows who started the kiss but it's long and chaste, sweet and tenderly slow.

After that you're just an item, no real talk necessary. It takes a while for others to figure it out, y'all don't act mush different. All of your kisses are stolen, flirting is no more than usual. Varric takes things slow which is fine by you.

When your gone you send letters back and forth. It's a bit difficult because you're on the move constantly. Your letters mostly consist of current events but as the time apart grows it will detail how you miss one another, sometimes it's spicy.

In your extreme highs he listens intensely. Your excited nature making him feel like everything is right in the world. In your extreme lows he learns how to help you. Lack of work? He tries to get you to focus on doing something, like a puzzle or finding a specific item. Saw something horrible? He'll ask you to talk about it. Just down? He tells you it's okay and either does a little spa day and spends the day pampering and goofing off or he takes you to the tavern to have fun, which usually end in some 'fun'.

Varric is also a bridge to having a better social life. You don't stop being strange but he brings out your sweetness and humor allowing others to enjoy it as well. You are also the muse of his latest book and high society folk are nosy so in places like Val Royeaux you will be swarmed. But in taverns and the like it's just an good time.

"Hello everyone, my name is (F/n) Azura  and I am the voice actress for Mondstadt Chief Alchemist of the Knights of Favonious, [Y/n]."

Albedo watches Aether's stream since he would occasionally invite his friends or some va's he works with to talk or play a game. Right now, his friend was having a small Q and A with [Y/n]'s voice actress.

"But you can call me Azura, I don't mind at all." She waves at the camera before Aether introduces himself.

"And I am Aether, the voice actor for Genshin Impact's main character that doesn't have a name.....yet." He laughs awkwardly at this, making the woman beside him let out a quiet chuckle.

(F/n) pats Aether on the shoulder, "there there, if the main character doesn't have a name then we'll just name him after you."

Albedo smiles at this, glancing down at the chat that is spamming comments that are too fast for him to read all at once.

"Okay, first question! This is for you, (F/n)." Aether holds up his phone, reading the question as (F/n) listens carefully.

" How surprised were you when you found that [Y/n] was based on you, design-wise?"

(F/n) lets out a hum at this, "I was very surprised at first, when the company reached out to me for the first time I didn't actually think they would go through with it. A year later, I was hired by them during an audition and here we are today."

Aether sighs, "yeah, she called me to read off the email and convinced her to agree, this was a big chance for her after all."

The next few questions were nothing for the people trying to make them spoil the storyline which didn't happen, thankfully.

"What do you think of the other VA's who also voice [Y/n]?"

Aether reads it off, letting out an 'oh' as sweat rolls down his face as he looks up at (F/n) who is staring back at him.

"Actually, I also voice her in other languages. The company was very persistent that I voiced her in all languages. I can speak Chinese, Japanese, and English although I'm not very fluent in Korean or Spanish."

Aether laughs at the last part, making her groan out a bit, "oh yeah, she failed Spanish in High School."

"How did you two meet?"

(F/n) jumps in excitement at this, raising her hand as if in a classroom. "Oh! I can answer this, we met back in Middle School through his sister, Lumine, who was taking after-school classes." She explains, reminiscing about the past. "He would often wait in the hallways for her or on the benches, we first talked to each other after he spied on me when I was taking singing classes-"

"H-hey! I wasn't spying on you!"

"Yes, you were!"

"I wasn't, why can't you let that go!?"

Albedo chuckles at this before getting up from his seat to fetch a bottle of water. The live stream is still on as Aether goes on to the next question.

"Are there any other characters you voice besides [Y/n]?"

"If you're familiar with Honkai Impact, I voice a familiar, blue-haired lover that has yet to be revealed in the main story."

"Okay, last question before we end the stream. What do you think of Albedo?"

"Albedo? I'm not familiar with this name?" (F/n) says, a bit confused, was she supposed to know who this was?

Aether immediately steps in after seeing her confusion, "Albedo, he voices a few NPCs in Genshin and he's known to admire [Y/n] bigger than anyone."

"Ah, I see. Well, it makes me happy that he loves [Y/n] just as I love voicing her." She looks at the camera for a few seconds before looking down at her phone, seeing the time.

"Actually, I think he's watching the stream right now." Aether couldn't help but let a grin grow on his lips, he knew that Albedo would be so flustered at this point.

(F/n) looks up at this, setting her phone down by her side upon hearing this. "Oh! Really! Then, thank you Albedo for being [Y/n]'s number one supporter and I hope you stay tuned for more [Y/n] content in the future." She bows her head slightly before smiling at the camera as Aether says a goodbye and ends the stream.

Dropping the half empty water bottle, Albedo feels his blood run cold at this. Now everyone knew him as [Y/n] biggest simp, even her VA was aware of his existence and the way he felt when she personally spoke in [Y/n]'s voice while thanking him.

God, he truly is a simp for a 3D character from a gacha game—

Hello fellow SEAsian (Indonesian here)

I know this movie is the definition of old news, but what were your thoughts on Raya and the Last Dragon? I personally see it as lost potential, and I think they didn't go in with the genuine intention to represent a culture. We got "well, here's the general aesthetics of eleven countries and some not-white sounding names, you're welcome (shh don't tell anyone that there's more EAsian VAs and writers than SEAsian VA and writers)" as opposed to Coco and Encanto, which explicitly state "hey, this is in Mexico and Colombia! The detailed cultural aspects we implemented and the writers and the VAs we hired reflect that!". I genuinely want to like this movie but they're not making it easy lol

Besides the rep I also have beef with the writing but that's not the point right now

I never watched Raya bc I was so annoyed with disney and the dragon design and the stupid premise that just. Isn’t based in SEASian folklore at all. It really would not have bothered me if they just PICKED A SEASIAN CULTURE instead of trying to be all-inclusive. If they were going to make the dragon sort of thai they shouldve just leaned into it and made it *all* thai, with maybe a few small elements borrowed from other cultures to pad out the five clans or whatever.

Which btw was STUPID AND ANNOYING bc they literally ripped off black panther for that one shot. Raya was like an exercise in how many iconic shows and movies can we copy to make this the most effective cashgrab. Blegh.

And by attempting to be generically SEAsian, which is literally impossible because every SEAsian culture is so fucking distinct from its neighbors, you just end up with meaningless drivel that alienates the entire ostensible audience. I says ostensible, because although Raya was marketed as being a princess for us, but really she was just written to appeal to Disney’s usual princess movie audience, aka white little girls and their parents.

But can I say I was disappointed? Nah, because I never expected anything better from the demon mouse.

Sharing another job interview diaries today!

Hey! I'm back!

So for today, I decided to use my tumblr account to answer some common interview questions. Yes! You read that right. I am feeling a pretty anxious with regards to my online interview this afternoon. Actually, this will be my third online interview to date and am still not used to this medium. Right! I haven't got the VA position I shared with you last February. I was really happy with that interview. It gave me enough confidence to assume I'll get the job. So, when the company didn't call after that, I was extremely sad that I stopped sending applications. I joined to a fandom and tried to busy myself there.

Fast forward to October, I revised my resume and send out to several companies. Yesterday, I got a response and was asked to answer some questionnaires and personal information sheet. Then, when I accomplished those, they messaged me to prepare for an online interview today. I am pretty happy. But as the hours came past, I started to feel anxious. I don't want to ruin this interview, this chance. I need a job. I want to work again. Hence, I'm here.

Writing this will help to calm myself I believe. This will also help to practice my answers later. Below are the questions I'll be going to answer in preparation for the interview. Let's go!!!

I tend to become a very independent person when it comes to work whatever responsibilities I may get. I like to discover things on my own. I rarely ask for help. This year would mark 9 years since I graduated from NC A&T. I have come to many conclusions since then: particularly, how to forged my career path and why it took so long to accept my talents. I want my story to help you on their journey.

The year was 2012. I had just obtained my Engineering degree after 6 years of hard work, study abroad excursions, and University research expeditions. I would have probably still been at A&T doing Climate Research with the University of Minnesota if I hadn't elected to graduate.

However, it was promptly after the economic downturn. All of my prospects had dried up. Time Warner Cable, while they had appreciated my work, the company had overturned. No one left working there even remembered who I was, never mind how valuable my engineering, production manuals had been. I had pursued patent writing at the US Patent Office in Alexandria, VA, but no one ever followed up with me. It was a dismal time.

Cultural Mismatch: An Aversion to North Carolina

I was living with my parents after 6 years of living abroad, living out of state, and generally just being independent. However, I was severely culturally mismatched. Here is why--

Eden, NC, is composed of retirees with very few economic opportunities for locals. Staying there would have been a lethal financial decision. Additionally, there was virtually no support from the community for people who want to advance.

Eden is a dilapidated Company Town. The city was designed to serve only one company. If you do not fit into the company, there is no job for you. Therefore, Eden's company NEVER hired anyone within my family's zip code. Even if candidates have the expertise, they did not see value in the community. They only saw economical (cheap) standards of living for their workers. To make matters worse, Eden's only company was starting to move out of the city in 2012.

After my time abroad, out of state, and out of the community, I had accumulated values that no one around me could appreciate. While this may sound pig-headed, in this case, it's a practical observation. I had become fluent in Korean, among other things. No one in Eden, NC, could appreciate that. They certainly couldn't fit that skill into their office.

Given my situation, I vowed to move away from North Carolina as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I attempted to salvage my financial situation. I created a freelancing account on Elance, now Upwork. However, 9 years ago, it allowed professionals from India and China to compete with people in the U.S. While someone in India can afford to edit a manuscript for pennies on the hour, I could not.

As an effect, I gained the bad habit of devaluing my work. After the US Patent Office ghosted me, it was a huge blow to my self-worth. Combined with being isolated at my parent's place in a community I had zero connection with, I became desperate for any chance to get away.

By Halloween 2012, I was moving to New York with some family. After living in a metropolitan, world city like Seoul, South Korea, moving to New York seemed like a cure for my cultural displacement. We had a place in Brooklyn, and we were set. I was sure I'd have better luck and find more people to appreciate me in New York.

The Unusual Path of Superstorm Sandy

Superstorm Sandy would hit Brooklyn and the rest of New York a day later. What made the storm so unusual is that it didn't follow the path of usual storms. Let me explain.

The North Carolina Outerbanks juts out far into the Atlantic, serving as a barrier for most of the east coast. Hurricanes naturally go out to the Atlantic after visiting the Outerbanks. It's why New York, New Jersey, and most other states on the East Coast above North Carolina never saw any storms. This is why Jersey Shore (was) such a thing. The entirety of New York City is on a collection of islands out in the bay with 10 to 20-story skyscrapers as the norm.

Meanwhile, North Carolina gets storms so often, the people there know not to build anything on our beaches. We have horrific riptides that will drag you out into the ocean-- and this is on a regular day. There is a huge chance that a whole hurricane will come and tear through your little beach house like a toddler on a rampage. This chance has increased 10-fold with global warming and more active Hurricane seasons.

The North Carolina Outerbanks belong to the birds and wildlife. It's for the best.

Albeit, it seems Superstorm Sandy shares this sentiment. Sandy clipped the Outerbanks and veered right for New York and New Jersey. Subways flooded, property was destroyed, and the Jersey boardwalk till this day is a shadow of its former self.

For my sister and me, that meant that we were no longer moving to Brooklyn. I wouldn't get to New York City until 2013. We settled for an overpriced apartment in Washington Heights.

When I arrived, the job prospects were even lower after a 100-year storm like Superstorm Sandy. After 6 years of getting my engineering degree, I was reduced to temp-work. While I talked about my engineering, design, and rendering experience, people asked me for Excel spreadsheets. Despite moving up the seaboard, I still couldn't find anyone who could appreciate my skills and experience. It was a frustrating time.

When I did settle for underemployment, companies strung me along. They would promise to hire me permanently but only kept me on for projects. I had to learn how to minimize myself to make rent (I wasn't very good at it). However, I did learn a lot about how to serve.

My Mutagen: Navigating Bureaucracy for the Good of the People

One of my favorite assignments was helping people after Superstorm Sandy. One would think people who have lost everything would be inconsolable. However, on the whole, these New Yorkers were strong and gracious.

I learned a lot about reliance from them while filing their paperwork. Many families were devastated by water damage, mold, and loss of life in some cases. Yet, they would still have just about everything they needed for FEMA. If they didn't, listening to people's stories gave them the motivation to come back the next day to get what they need.

I got a chance to work in Staten Island and Coney Island. I would spend hours on the train or on the ferry, just to help old ladies scan through legalese to get what they needed. Most importantly, I found out I could do it quickly. In the Summer of 2013, I helped about 100 families get their FEMA assistance. While I was essentially a (secretary) with an Engineering degree, I was an efficient one. I could find loopholes and clauses to help people get what they need. I developed a system to make it better. More importantly, I learned how to navigate New York Bureaucracy and do it with agile precision. It was temporary, but I took many qualities with me that I still use to this day.

Discovering your Mutagen: Are you Culturally Mismatched?

There is a lot of talk about "following your passion" when you first graduate. There was, certainly, when I had graduated in 2012. However, what good are your passions if they don't elevate other people? Do your passions really validate how you think the world should be?

As individuals, we have much more power than we realize. This power is increased tenfold when we team up with people who have the same values as we do. Even when you feel like you are alone, when you are convicted and stand up for what you believe in, this impacts the people around us. If you put in the work can attract people who have the same values as you.

The character (hanja/kanji) themselves mean "deep understanding" - so these martial artists lingo use it as a way to describe a skill/technique that you only get to learn when you've fully mastered the arts.
