When you've got the Neopoints to buy an item you've been saving up for... but there aren't any to buy.

happy birthday to tundranine!
a sort of neopets x in9 crossover.
i adopted him three months ago, as a result of getting several fountain dips from the faerie quest event. the "nine" in the name was what drew me to him, and since he became my ninth pet, there was no way i wouldn't try to make the custom in9-related.

initially went with a Jonah-esque look since i like neovian attire and the newspaper delivery clothes looked pretty good, but as soon as i got the Count Van Roo cape from one of the trick-or-treat bags, it finally clicked that the full classic vampire look was the way to go!
Tumblr media
also spent quite a lot of NP getting the snowbunny and halloween petpet PB (i could've waited for the latter's price to drop instead of trading for one...), but i'm really pleased with how everything turned out and tundranine will probably be a vampire forever lol

and very nice of TNT to release birthday cupcakes that boost stats by 10 instead of 5!

Okay so it's not exactly like. Uh. Okay.
So the trick-or-treat bags are absolutely a thing. This post is accurate in that sense. But the really big thing is not the trick-or-treat bags. After all, those are a one-time thing. You get to pick up one of each type of bag, and that's it. Sure valuable items have cratered in price, but many of those were only in demand to specific collectors. Most people don't have, "Oh I really wish I had a Vira Plushie!" as a major goal. Good for them to exist, of course, but most regular non-0.01% players won't care about these items.
No, the BIG deal is the new Daily Quest feature! Every day you can go to your Quest Log and do five easy tasks a day. Things like "buy 2 item from Neopian shops" or "feed your Neopet." Each of these will give a reward. That's already pretty good, since the reward pool includes some rare items, even if a lot of the other rewards are stinkers.
But that's not the big deal either, oh no. Because if you can complete all five tasks every day for a week, you get to win a super special extra prize! And those prizes? Well. How'd you like a Kadoatie? Or a Draik Transmogrification Potion? Or a Faerie Krawk Morphing Potion? Heck, how about just a Krawk, as in the petpet? Snowbunny Stamp? That was worth 280 million before all this mess, but who knows what it will be after. Or a King Altador Stamp? That was 300 million. Lab Ray Stamp? Also 300 million. Or how would you like a free Stealth Paint Brush? That's one of the most sought-after paintable colors because it both looks cool on its own and gives clothing that looks great for crosspainting (if you don't know what that means, if a color bestows clothing upon a neopet you get to keep the clothing to use even if you paint the pet a different color). Or a Candy brush, or a Toy brush! And this is just scratching the surface. The one reward that's just 100,000 in pure NP is probably the least valuable reward here.
This feature is a permanent addition to the site. That's what a fuckton of the complaining from the 0.01% is about right now. And yes, it is GREAT.
(also something the OP didn't mention that is critical to understanding the situation: the inflation of the last year or two was largely fake. One, we know there are bots using a feature called Food Club to create a ridiculous amount of NP that wouldn't otherwise exist. According to our old pal neo_truths there is a single person running approx. 60,000 accounts making NP this way. Bots also infest the shops where items stock: this is part of why restockable stamps are so impossible to get, because illegitimate users are the only ones who can get ahold of them from the source. And even outside of bots, we know a small number of 0.01%ers have been purposely trying to inflate popular items far beyond their historical patterns over the last year or two. They go out of their way to buy up as many as possible so they can set the price wherever they want.)
god i wish i wouldn't have to explain the intricacies of the neopets economy to you guys to give the full context for this but. the new neopets team that took over from jumpstart pledged that they were going to curb the inflation of rare items, which is great because a lot of rare items are worth literally hundreds of millions of neopoints, they are unbuyable unless you've been playing actively for 20 years. they did this earlier with a site festival that included random loot boxes, some of which had Unbelievably Fucking Rare And Precious items worth 200 million neopoints apiece.
well.
today they have gone a step further. by releasing this year's trick-or-treat bags. and having the trick-or-treat bags be stuffed to the brim with unbelievably fucking rare stamps, weapons, paint brushes, defense magic, and other unbuyables. (all prohibitively expensive and in-high-demand types of items.)
jellyneo, the premier neopets website, has recorded prices of some items plummeting from 2,000,000 neopoints to 4,000 neopoints IN THE LAST THREE HOURS. this is when most people haven't even heard about the event or OPENED THEIR BAGS YET.
and of course. cherry on top. 20-year-old account holders are crytyping on the site events neoboard about how mean and cruel it is to make rare stamps part of the prize pool, because their entire identity hinges on being part of the neopian bourgeoisie, and they are having MELTDOWNS over their assets being devalued until they're part of the lowly proletariat.
this is a children's game for children btw.
none of the money is real.
i'm having such a good time.

now TWO of my neopets were ludicrously expensive, because I got a free snowbunny stamp and threw it into the trading post for 2mil. I already had over a mil at that point, so once I hit 3mil I had the realization that I could achieve the darigan lupe dreams I've had since middle school, and I would still be a millionaire. so Kingg got a makeover, and her gear even still looks pretty okay. also I painted Lea from disco to cloud, but that was still free because I got the cloud paint brush from the daily quests.

A small concept for a unnamed neopets fairy oc.
A snow type fairy with short, light purple hair. Her eyes are dark blue.  On the younger side (eleven). Wears a white hoodie jacket with plush Snowbunny ears on the hood. Pine green pants and black boots with white pom poms going down where the laces would be (three on each boot.) Pine green gloves.
She's known for making snow sculptures all over and for helping out the local wildlife. Runs a a snow sculpture event every year during the month of giving.
I also have a mental image of her making a snow sculpture of the snowager out the snow fairies window and startling her when she sees it.

had a dream where i found a bunch of neopets toys in my basement that i had lost (in the dream, not irl) as a kid. Mostly plushies. Duplicate pink kougra (have one irl), the keyquest faerie ixi, a pink aisha, a poogle, a really small pink poogle whose face looked like 🥺, a snowbunny (actually lost mine as a kid), and a handful of other plushies. There was also a little plastic figure of an MSP poogle standing upright very straight. looked very bootleg-like. The checkered parts of it looked like they were originally glittery, but over time the stuff deteriorated and became sticky, so it had a bunch of dust clinging to it that was difficult to remove.
