Anchorage, Alaska is 6.4" away from becoming the snowiest season on record. Last year, our final snowfall was May 5th, so we have some time still.

It's not just me, but plenty of other people I know, who end up trying to explain to people just how crappy a piece of land to try to build on Anchorage is.
#anchorage#alaska#geology#you can see on the local walmart where they had to patch the building back together after it split into pieces#because different parts sank into the ground different amounts#several feet different#the buildings are as tall as ground conditions and earthquakes allow#and snow removal limits how close together you can put them#we're already running out of places to pile snow many winters

MOA Guidance Regarding Potential Roof Collapse
Issued March 7, 2023
· In the last few weeks Anchorage as experienced 3 (known) partial roof collapses involving the failure of wooden trusses having metal gang nail plates.
· We do not know the exact mechanisms that initiated the failures.
· We do know the roof trusses failed, resulting in catastrophic roof collapse.
· The weight of snow being supported was less than the design value of 40 pounds per square foot for the two most recent failures.
· The collapses have occurred in commercial construction built between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s.
· The roof trusses were constructed from wood with metal gang nail plates.
o Top chord bearing parallel cord trusses demand extra attention; however, a common bottom chord bearing pitched-roof type of truss has also failed too.
· If you own a building falling within these parameters, we ask that you remove the snow/ice from the roof as soon as possible.
· We ask that snow removal contractors prioritize these types of buildings.
· Further guidance will be provided as we better understand the mechanisms causing these failures.
