Inktober day 2. The theme was "divided", which made me think of the primordial frost giant Ymir in Norse mythology. Ymir's name originally meant something like "doubled", which makes me think on the one hand of the two-in-one nature of the hermaphrodite (of interest here since Ymir gives birth with no partner to new giants from his feet and under his arms) and on the other hand of the fact that this procreation was essentially a doubling of oneself (very like primordial cells, i suppose). The former of these points led me to portray Ymir with both male and female characteristics, and as very... Fecund, i guess. Curvy, breasted, and lots of hair everywhere (and of course statuesque godlike strength, to stay within the norms of deity illustration). The second point is what made me think of this in terms of the theme "division", though i'm not sure it's the closest fit-just part of the chain of associations that led me to this picture. When you are the first being in the universe to reproduce, it's got to be a bit startling, so i'm titling this not just "Primordial Procreation" but "Ymir hits puberty". In the background we have a primordial cow, leaking milk and licking something out of the ice, and a primordial burning man, both looking on in confusion at this primordial ruckus. You can check out Anthony Faulkes' translation of Edda, pp 10ff, for some details, though if i get around to posting about this on my main blog spoilers may ensue. #inktober #inktober2017 #norse #norsemythology #mythology #creationmyth #ymir #giants #jötnar #edda #snorraedda #proseedda #hermaphrodite #ginnungagap #frostgiants #primordial #inillotempore

Never got around to posting my own pic of the Codex Regius when we all got to see it and nerded out. It’d be a really good photo too if you couldn’t see out hands and phones reflected in the glass. #codexregius #snorraedda #proseedda #árnimagnússoninstitute #manuscripts #oldnorse #haskoliislands

YOU ABSOLUTE FUCKING AMERICAN WALLNUTS!
If you knew even a word of norse mythology you would know that all the Æsir are canonically Asian! Seriously, have you people even heard Snorraedda mentioned? No? Cause that is the most credible source of information we have on Norse mythology.
Prologus, the first part, details the history of the Æsir before their journey to Scandinavia. Thor is named after Troy. Æsir is what Asians were called. So get your white wiseass attitude out of here and stfu.
No, you are wrong. Scandinavians are white and norse mythology is white culture. If you think that having a white woman play Pocahontas is whitewashing and a black valkyrie isn't blackwashing you are a hypocrite. Norse gods were all white and by living in a western world and enjoying the stories of a white history you can damn well expect it to be done by white people. Our stories are no more represented in the west than Asian stories in Asia. Whites have just as much of a culture as the rest.
Yeah, I’ve already explained about 90% of this so I’m not gonna touch it again. But regarding your insinuation that a white actress playing Pocahontas is no different from a black woman playing a Valkyrie, all I can really say is…really?Really?Pocahontas is a historic Native American woman. This country’s history of continual abuse, exploitation, and outright genocide against the numerous Native American tribes that have occupied the land before white people ever considered the possibility of land to the West is a terrible evil, one that can never be forgiven. Pocahontas’ own history is one marked by captivity, abuse, and degradation. To have a white woman portray her would be an affront to basic decency.A Valkyrie is a figure from Norse Mythology. My initial argument for the inclusion of a black woman in the role of Valkyrie was simply that, according to Norse Mythology and Old Norse history, it is entirely possible. Which it is. I’m thrilled for the inclusion because Hollywood is notorious for it’s lack of diversity. But more importantly modern Scandinavia is a diverse country. Not all Scandinavians are white.People of multiple racial backgrounds call Scandinavia their home and share it’s heritage. Simple as that.
