Barbados Vacation Homes by Owner
Barbados, a stunning gem in the Caribbean, is celebrated for its pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. While many travelers opt for resorts, choosing a vacation home by owner offers a unique opportunity to experience the island like a local. This guide explores the advantages of renting a vacation home in Barbados and provides tips on how to find your ideal rental.
The Allure of Barbados
Known for its idyllic beaches like Crane Beach and Bathsheba, Barbados is a paradise for sun lovers and adventure seekers. The island boasts a rich history, evident in its colonial architecture, plantations, and cultural events. Visitors can explore lush landscapes, enjoy water sports, or relax on the beach, making it a destination that caters to all types of travelers. Whether you’re interested in vibrant nightlife, local cuisine, or historical tours, Barbados has something for everyone.
Advantages of Renting Vacation Homes by Owner
Authentic Local Experience: When you rent a vacation home from an owner, you gain access to insider knowledge. Many homeowners are locals who can provide recommendations on hidden gems, local dining spots, and cultural experiences that may not be widely advertised.
Space and Comfort: Vacation homes typically offer more space than hotel rooms, making them ideal for families or groups. You can enjoy multiple bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and common areas where you can gather and relax together.
Cost-Effective for Groups: For larger parties, renting a home can be more economical than booking several hotel rooms. Additionally, having a kitchen allows you to prepare meals, saving money on dining out while enjoying the flexibility to eat in.
Unique Accommodations: Barbados offers a variety of vacation homes, from beachfront villas with spectacular ocean views to charming cottages nestled in lush gardens. This diversity allows you to find a property that perfectly suits your style and budget.
Tips for Finding Your Perfect Vacation Home
Decide on Location: Consider which part of the island you want to stay in. The west coast, known for its calm waters and luxurious resorts, is perfect for those seeking relaxation, while the east coast offers a more rugged, natural beauty ideal for adventure.
Use Trusted Platforms: Websites like VRBO, Airbnb, and HomeAway feature extensive listings of vacation homes. Utilize filters to narrow down your options based on price, amenities, and location.
Read Guest Reviews: Pay attention to reviews from previous guests. They provide valuable insights into the property’s condition, the owner’s responsiveness, and the overall experience. Look for properties with consistently positive feedback.
Communicate with Owners: Don’t hesitate to reach out to property owners with questions about their home or the surrounding area. A good owner will be happy to assist and provide information that can enhance your stay.
Understand Cancellation Policies: Before finalizing your booking, review the cancellation policy. Knowing your options in case of unexpected changes can offer peace of mind.
Making the Most of Your Barbados Experience
Once you’ve secured your vacation home, it’s time to immerse yourself in the beauty of Barbados. Spend your days lounging on the beach, snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs, or exploring the island’s natural wonders, such as Harrison’s Cave. Discover the rich culinary scene by sampling local dishes like flying fish, macaroni pie, and cou-cou, and don’t miss the chance to enjoy the island’s lively nightlife.
Engage with the local culture by attending festivals or visiting historical sites, such as St. Nicholas Abbey and the Garrison Savannah. These experiences will give you a deeper appreciation of Barbados’ unique heritage.
Choosing a vacation home by owner in Barbados not only enhances your travel experience but also provides a more personal touch to your stay. With its breathtaking scenery, rich culture, and warm hospitality, Barbados is a destination that promises unforgettable memories. Start planning your getaway today and discover the magic of this beautiful island!

Day 5: Harrison's Cave, a Really Old Church, and a Coral Reef (6 Jan 2020)
Today was the day I had been looking forward to since we'd gotten the schedule for our trip way back in early December: we were going to Harrison's Cave! Since Barbados is the only island in the Lesser Antilles made of coral limestone, it is also the only island with caverns. Harrison's is the most famous. First mentioned in the late 18th century, it was rediscovered in 1970 and opened to the public in the 80s.
Tumblr media
We took the "signature tram tour" where we rode a tram car through the cave. The amount of development that went into making it accessible for a tram car pains me a little. They had to bulldoze a massive pathway alongside and through the original cave passages, most likely destroying many formations and habitat for cave-inhabiting animals. All for us to get a look at it. I think I would have preferred for the developers to widen the already existing passages to allow for simply a walking tour.
On the other hand, the cave itself was gorgeous. It was so active!! The amount of stalactites and stalagmites was astounding, and the calcite itself was so pure! As part of the tour at Lincoln, I carry a UV light with me to make the calcite glow in the dark (calcite is phosphorescent). Since the calcite was more pure here than it was at Lincoln, I bet it would have glowed even longer and I really wish I brought a UV light with me. Also, Lincoln doesn't have as many stalactites and stalagmites, but it does have a lot more flowstone. Harrison's also has so much moving water and pools, which definitely made for a unique cave experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the tour itself, I enjoyed it! I thought we had a great guide and I was grateful we were allowed to get off the tram and walk around at two points. The information at the beginning of the tour, including the video on the geological history of Barbados, was very interesting. The island is about 120,000 years old and the cave is only about 60,000 years old! I only wish there were more opportunities to ask questions. I am still curious about where their cave pearls are located and how exactly they can age stalagmites by counting the rings inside them, because that's not what I learned and that's not what we teach guests at Lincoln.
Tumblr media
I am torn because I love seeing caves and learning about speleology, but I also recognize that my presence as well as others can be damaging to a cave environment, especially when it comes to developing and managing a show cave. Either way, Harrison's cave was absolutely beautiful.
Tumblr media
We ate lunch outside the Harrison's gift shop and then went to our next destination where Tony was to meet us again: St. James Church. This is the oldest church in Barbados located on the oldest piece of consecrated land on the island they call God's acre. We also had a great tour guide here named Maurice. The church was beautiful, with a massive organ at the west end of the church and a bell at the north end, made in the same place in England as our very own Liberty Bell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After exploring the church, Tony showed us some crab-eye seeds, which are very poisonous, and other seeds which I don't remember the name of. We also looked at a tree called the black willow caper, with a scientific name named after a dog's penis. According to Barbados folklore, it's unwise to hang around this tree after 6pm or else you'll see spirits.
On that note, we walked to the beach! Since we were on the west side of the island, this was the Caribbean sea. Unlike the last beach we visited, the water was more calm because there was a coral reef beneath the surface. At first swimming above a coral reef was a bit terrifying. The water was so clear but not enough to see what was actually beneath me. That was until Hunter let us borrow his goggles. My fear was erased and I was totally mesmerized. I had never been snorkeling, coral reefs always seemed like such a faraway thing that I would only see in Planet Earth documentaries. I saw so many colorful fish and swam around columns of coral. There was one fish I was even able to identify: a parrotfish! Unfortunately I wasn't able to capture any photos from this experience but I assure you it was awesome in the purest definition of the word.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Too soon, we left the beach and headed back to Codrington to eat dinner. We assumed our place on the back porch with rum drinks and Banks beer in hand.

America faces catastrophic teacher shortage (Washington Post) Rural school districts in Texas are switching to four-day weeks this fall due to lack of staff. Florida is asking veterans with no teaching background to enter classrooms. Arizona is allowing college students to step in and instruct children. The teacher shortage in America has hit crisis levels—and school officials everywhere are scrambling to ensure that, as students return to classrooms, someone will be there to educate them. “I have never seen it this bad,” Dan Domenech, executive director of the School Superintendents Association, said of the teacher shortage. “Right now it’s number one on the list of issues that are concerning school districts ... necessity is the mother of invention, and hard-pressed districts are going to have to come up with some solutions.”
Mexico’s Cruel Drought (NYT) Mexico, or large parts of it, is running out of water. An extreme drought has seen taps run dry across the country, with nearly two-thirds of all municipalities facing a water shortage that is forcing people in some places to line up for hours for government water deliveries. The lack of water has grown so extreme that irate residents block highways and kidnap municipal workers to demand more supply. The numbers underlining the crisis are startling: In July, eight of Mexico’s 32 states were experiencing extreme to moderate drought, resulting in 1,546 of the country’s 2,463 municipalities confronting water shortages, according to the National Water Commission. By mid-July, about 48 percent of Mexico’s territory was suffering drought, according to the commission, compared with about 28 percent of the country’s territory during the same period last year. Across the border in recent years, most of the Western half of the United States has been in drought, with conditions ranging from moderate to severe. For the region, this period is now the driest two decades in 1,200 years. The crisis is particularly acute in Monterrey, one of Mexico’s most important economic hubs and where the entire metropolitan area of about five million people is affected by drought, according to officials. Some neighborhoods in Monterrey have been without water for 75 days, leading many schools to close before the scheduled summer break.
Record amount of seaweed is choking shores in the Caribbean (AP) Near-record amounts of seaweed are smothering Caribbean coasts from Puerto Rico to Barbados, killing fish and other wildlife, choking tourism and releasing stinky, noxious gases. More than 24 million tons of sargassum blanketed the Atlantic in June, shattering the all-time record, set in 2018, by 20%, according to the University of South Florida’s Optical Oceanography Lab. And unusually large amounts of the brown algae have drifted into the Caribbean Sea. A raggedy carpet of vegetation recently surrounded an uninhabited island near the French Caribbean territory of St. Martin that is popular with tourists, forcing officials to suspend ferry service and cancel kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkeling tours. The normally translucent turquoise waters around Pinel Island turned into a prickly yellowish-brown slush. Scientists say more research is needed to determine why sargassum levels in the region are so high, but the United Nations’ Caribbean Environment Program said possible factors include a rise in water temperatures as a result of climate change, and nitrogen-laden fertilizer and sewage that nourish the algae. “This year has been the worst year on record,” said Lisa Krimsky, a university researcher with Florida Sea Grant, a program aimed at protecting the coast. “It is absolutely devastating for the region.”
Volcano eruption near Iceland airport sparks travel fears (Washington Post) A massive volcano erupting close to a major global travel hub, Iceland’s Keflavik Airport, sparked close monitoring by officials and fascination from people venturing near the flows of bright orange lava despite warnings. The eruption, a volcanic fissure, is occurring about 10 miles from Keflavik International Airport and about 20 miles from the country’s capital, Reykjavík. As of Thursday morning the airport—which has flights from Seattle, London and Frankfurt—remained open and operational. International travelers will recall the 2010 eruption of the country’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed huge ash clouds into the atmosphere, grounding global air traffic and leaving millions stranded amid travel chaos.
Months into war, Ukraine refugees slow to join EU workforce (AP) Liudmyla Chudyjovych used to have a career as a lawyer in Ukraine and big plans for the future. That was before the Russian invasion forced the 41-year-old woman to put her daughter’s safety first, and leave both her job and home behind. Since fleeing the town of Stryj in western Ukraine in May, Chudyjovych has found a new job in the Czech Republic. But instead of practicing law, she’s had to settle for work as a housekeeper at a hotel in the capital, Prague. “It’s just a different stage of my career,” she said. “That’s simply how it is.” One of the millions of refugees who have fled Ukraine since the Feb. 24 Russian invasion, Chudyjovych considers herself lucky to have a job at all. Not fluent enough in either Czech or English, Chudyjovych said she didn’t mind the work as long as she and her daughter are safe. Although the European Union introduced regulations early in the war to make it easier for Ukrainian refugees to live and work in its 27 member nations while they decide whether to seek asylum or return home, many are only now starting to find jobs—and many are still struggling.
Inspectors OK 1st Ukraine grain ship but no sign yet of more (AP) The first grain ship to leave Ukraine and cross the Black Sea under a wartime deal passed inspection Wednesday in Istanbul and headed on to Lebanon. Ukraine said 17 other vessels were “loaded and waiting permission to leave,” but there was no word yet on when they could depart. Ukraine is a major global grain supplier but the war had blocked most exports, so the July 22 deal aimed to ease food security around the globe. World food prices have been soaring in a crisis blamed on the war, supply chain problems and COVID-19. Although U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called Razoni’s journey a “significant step,” no other ships have left from Ukraine in the past 48 hours and no explanations have been given for that delay.
China launches military exercises around Taiwan after Pelosi visit (Washington Post) China unleashed a show of force against Taiwan on Thursday, firing missiles into the sea and threatening the island’s territorial waters in retaliation for Taipei’s hosting of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for a contentious visit. The military exercises have sent tensions in the Taiwan Strait spiking to the highest level in decades, raising the risk of a dangerous miscalculation in one of the world’s most charged geopolitical flash points. As the maneuvers got underway, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said the Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) carried out long-range, live-fire exercises and “precision strikes” on eastern parts of the strait. About 10 Chinese naval ships crossed the strait’s median line on Wednesday night and remained in that area through midday Thursday, while Chinese military aircraft also crossed the unofficial maritime boundary Thursday morning. A day earlier, during Pelosi’s visit, 22 Chinese military aircraft breached the median line, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry.
Palestinians left in tense limbo by Israeli expulsion order (AP) After repeatedly rebuilding his home only to have it demolished by Israeli soldiers, Mohammed Abu Sabaha has a new plan to remain on the land—he is moving into a cave. Abu Sabaha is among some 1,000 Palestinians at risk of expulsion from an arid region of the occupied West Bank that the Israeli military has designated as a live-fire training zone. Israel’s Supreme Court upheld their expulsion in May after a two-decade legal battle. Most residents of the area, known as Masafer Yatta, have remained in place since the ruling, even as Israeli security forces periodically roll in to demolish structures. But they could be forced out at any time, and rights groups fear Israel will do it gradually to evade international scrutiny. The entrance to Abu Sabaha’s cave is surrounded by the ruins of homes and animal pens that the soldiers demolished in earlier raids. The coo and cackle of chickens can be heard from inside a wrecked coop. A set of stone steps leads down into the cave, where he has strung up electrical lights, but it will take time to turn it into a home for his wife, parents and six children. “We have suffered a lot because of this ruling. Especially the kids, who were born here,” he said, standing in the dimly lit cave. “They fled demolitions, then went back when we rebuilt, so many times.”
