Winning a race was something he dreamt of. Winning a race meant all his worries disappeared like snow in the sun.

‘You can’t win, you always fuck up’

‘Russia 2021 was the closest you’d been to a win, you’ll never get that chance again’

‘You should have switched teams when you had the chance’

No more. He won, and he’d be damned if he would ever let any hate comment, any judging advice or any disrespectful tone push you further away from him than you already were. He won, but somehow it felt like he lost.

“Mate, I don’t get it. Help me understand, okay? You won your first Formula One race. You gave all them haters a big fuck you. You proved them wrong. The team’s proud of you, everyone’s cheering you on.”

It was true, everyone was proud of him, everyone cheered for him, chanting his name after the podium ceremony. Everyone. But one person.

“Hello? Lando?” Max seemed worried, he knew something was bothering his best friend, he knew him through and through. “You’re confusing me, mate. What’s the matter? Aren’t you happy? You can’t be too hard on yourself now, mate, you wo-..”

“It’s her!” He finally snapped, all the emotions he had bottled up and put in that jar, stashed away somewhere on the back shelf of his heart AND brain sneaked its way through and made a reappearance.

“I won! Yes I fucking won! But at what cost?! I lost her mate! I won and she wasn’t here. That doesn’t mean I fucking won. I lost, I lost it all, I lost her…”

Sneekpeek #3 of my Jamiazu fic

“Jamil, are you alright?” 

Jamil shot up, as if electrocuted, his eyes wide. He hastily stood up, rubbing his eyes. “Wow, you did not mention how well that little card would work.”

Azul laughed. “Did you need help with something?” Jamil could be so cute sometimes. 

Jamil looked down at the ground, possibly thinking. Then he looked up, with a calm fire in his glassy eyes. “I need to make a deal.”

“Wonderful! What do you need from me?”

“Help me get out of here. Take me with you, wherever you are these days. As long as I’m not here.” His voice started so strong and sure, but broke slowly as he continued to talk.

Azul was stunned, to say the least. “What about the Asims?”

Tears that Jamil most likely had been fighting back rolled down his cheeks, followed by silence and piercing eye contact.

“Is everything good? Have you talked to Kalim about this?”

“Kalim can’t do anything, he already told me. You’re my only ticket out of here, without having to go through with it.”

Azul tensed. “What is ‘it’ exactly?” 

Jamil’s face was completely still. “The wedding.”

Azul stood up, lost for words. “You’re engaged? I didn’t even know you were dating-”

“I’m not. I don’t even know the girl.”

Azul felt his three hearts drop.

“Are the Asims forcing you, or your parents?”Azul asked.

“Both. Kalim did everything he could, but...” Jamil started crying again, and Azul pulled Jamil towards the bench to sit beside him. 

“I won’t let this happen to you Jamil, you can count on that. Just give me a moment to think.”

Jamil looked up, fresh tears in his eyes, and nodded. 

A few moments passed in silence, the only sound to be heard was Jamil quietly sniffing or wiping his eyes, as Azul pondered every possibility. Then, he stood up, and kneeled down in front of Jamil. 

“Jamil, they can’t make you marry someone if you’re already married right?”

Jamil stared at him blankly, then raised an eyebrow. 

“So, here’s the deal,” Azul took off the glove off his right hand, still kneeling, and held out his hand. “Jamil Viper, will you marry me?”
