Chapter 00 PT: 2

Organised chaos. That’s the only way it could be described as. It was a school supposedly difficult to get into (as it was strict Catholic and only accepted the most well behaved students) but after only a year of Sammy attending, the school slowly went to shit. As soon as she made her way up the steps into the main building, Sammy was greeted to the awfully familiar wavering roaring of teenagers. With her rucksack slumped over one shoulder, she proceeded to make her way down the seemingly endless hall whilst trying to not create eye contact with anybody. Despite being a couple of years older than the kids who were still burdened with uniform, Sammy still felt like they could easily chase her into a corner and pulverize her. She quickened her pace as soon as the staircase was in sight; luckily it was empty, but with a quick glance at the digital clock mounted upon the nearby wall, it wouldn’t last long as it was almost time for the other kids to go to their lesson. Sammy practically sprinted up the stairs, but this sprint soon reduced itself into a huffy jog as she remembered how many stairs there was in the building.

The door labelled “SIXTH FORMERS AND STAFF ONLY” seemed to glow like the light and the end of a long, uphill tunnel when Sammy reached the top of the stairs, and as she entered it wasn’t long until she managed to spot her cult of ‘friends’ (well, they used to be what you would usually call ‘friends’ until each and every one of them got sucked into the world of perfect-looking Korean men), a group of girls chanting religiously in a corner around a circular table that had a single mac book sat in the center. It was displaying the usual Korean group of boys, all singing, dancing and making a variety of hip movements much to the girls’ delight. Sammy smiled with a roll of her eyes, heading over towards one of the girls who stood a small distance away from the rest. “Rhythmically-thrusting Korean lads not your cup of tea this morning, hey Becky?” She asked her with a grin. Becky turned around, her black hair bouncing as she did so and she returned the same grin. “Nah, rot really. Ah, also, I got your text about-” She paused suddenly, brown eyes darting upwards. Sammy opened her mouth to ask what was the matter until a harsh slam to her back knocked the air from her lungs.

“’Mind lowering the volume of your fuckin’ nutting party?”

Becky immediately crouched behind Sammy, peaking over her shoulder as the two looked up only to be faced with the towering figure of Jordan Ross glaring intimidatingly down at the pair. “Nobody want’s to hear you lot creaming your panties over some Asian men, y’know?” The mocking sing-songy voice came from Isla Stuarts who stood next to Jordan sportively, arms crossed. It turned out the rest of Jordan’s Adidas clan were there too. Sammy could hear the eventual silence from behind her as her group of ‘friends’ paused the music and slowly turned around. There was a thick tension of silence for a few heartbeats before Jordan spoke again. “That’s better.” He said in a way of triumph that Sammy absolutely despised. She proceeded to glare daggers at the group as they left, well known logos branding their chests and the sides of their legs and trainers like cattle on a farm. “Gees, that was rather unnecessary.” Becky grumbled, taking off her tiny rectangular and wiping the lenses on her white vest top. Sammy sighed and turned back around to face her. “Probs only wanted to start beef.” She said, but half of her sentence was drowned up by Becky flapping her fawn-colour hands in a manic manner whilst squealing. “Ah, yes yes yes! Your text!” The shorter girl suddenly remembered, frantically checking every pocket on her person for her phone. She soon located it in the front pocket of her her denim jacket, pulling it out of the rather tight fit and proceeded to scroll through what Sammy assumed were their text conversation. “Aha!” Becky announced as her scrolling came to a halt, her eyes flicking from side-to-side as she reread the message in conformation. She let out a snorty laugh. “Whats this thing about this Squip thingy? You high?” Sammy shook her head. “No no no, it looks legit. I was watching Etika’s deep web livestream-”

“You whaaat?”

“Trust me,alright? Look, it’s this computer assistant that, like, makes you a better person. Dude, if we got this there would be no more procrastinating coming to school, not more being the only chicks in school that haven’t seen a dick in person before, no more being too short tempered that you scare dudes off on the first date-”

“That’s just you.”

“...Y-Yeah, but that’s not all!” Sammy insisted. “You probs get a pretty hot guy’s voice in your brain for the rest of your days.” Now Becky looked interested and brought up her phone again. “I’m gonna Google this, to see if this is real that is.” She said before doing so. Sammy looked over her shoulder at the phone screen as Becky scrolled through the rather sparse results. “Apparently there was a big ordeal in New Jersey.” She mumbled as she squinted at the rather small font of a news report she’d stumbled upon, yet Sammy just leaned over and tapped past it. “C’mon, I just wanna find better info!” Just as they exited the page, the two stumbled across yet another news report, dating from 2010 that read:

Just as the Segway Human Transport system was introduced to the world as clandestine, heavily-funded “IT” technology, digital designers and futurists are now buzzing about “SQUIP” as the next great leap forward in human lifestyle enhancement. SQUIP is being developed by Sony (SNE). “It’s a simple device that will redefine how computers operate within our society,” says Harvey Dinglesnort about SQUIP, which Sony refuses to comment on directly. Mr. Dinglesnort reviews high-end devices for a variety of publications including The Sharper Image (SHRP). “They’re keeping close tabs on it because it really will be a sensation when it is released.” What is known about SQUIP is that it involves microcomputers that can be implanted—or ingested—into the human body. Devices like the VeriChip, from Applied Digital Systems (ADSXE), already provide this functionality, but VeriChip implantation is a surgical procedure (albeit an outpatient one) involving a needle large enough to dose an elephant. SQUIP is said to be much smaller and easier to “install” due to the fact that it does not employ conventional microchip structure. “Sony is going consumer with quantum computing,” Mr. Dinglesnort explains. “Scientists have been researching for years the prospect of building a computer based not on the binary system, where a piece of information is either a one or a zero, but on a ‘qubit’ system, where a piece of information can be a one, a zero, or a sort of in-between state that collapses into a one or zero when it is observed closely.” The quantum computer is of interest to researchers because of its staggering data-processing capabilities, exponentially surpassing those of current CPUs. It has been discussed for projects ranging from large-scale materials fabrication to time travel. But Sony seems to have simpler plans. “What they have said is, ‘Let’s not worry about all the great things quantum computers can do. Let’s just make a simple one and take advantage of the fact that it can be tiny, and try to manufacture a sort of ingestible Palm Pilot,’” Mr. Dinglesnort says. Consumer models are a long way off. But the prospect of SQUIP has futurists drooling and investors lining up and-

“Heheheh. Dinglesnort.”

“Becky, that’s not the point! This shit looks legit!” Sammy beamed, eyes wide. “And y’know what else? They’re available here, in Sheffield! At the local Fulton’s Foods.” Becky raised an eyebrow, her dark eyes looking Sammy up and down. “...Fulton’s Foods? The one in Haymarket? Sammy, that’s the sketchiest place in town-” Sammy cut her off with harsh shushes. “Still, I’m gonna use that £300 I got from that bet with Taylor to buy one after school. Wanna come?” Becky was silent for a moment, as if contemplating the question, before slapping her friend on the back with a smug smile.

“You’re on your own, buddy.”
