Snatch (2000) Film Review

If you are wanting absurdity, gangsters and ludicrous miss haps, filled with cockney-rhyming-slang sarcasm and undistinguishable Irish accents, then this is the film for you! After Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), Guy Richies' first film which inspired the events in Snatch (2000) splashed across our screens, it was inevitable for me to watch this as Lock Stock was hilarious and a delight to watch. By already asking around if my friends and family knew the film, it was always followed by heads being thrown back with signs of “Suchhhhh a classic- you have to watch it!” Therefore I had to give it a watch. 

Snatch is set in London's criminal underworld, where the film consists of two overlapping plots: one is a quest for a valuable stolen diamond ending up in some unlikely places, whereas the other is when a small-time boxing promoter (Jason Statham) finds himself unwillingly wrapped around the pinkie of a ruthless gangster (Alan Ford), bending to his every command including inflicting sadistic violence. Albeit graphic and savage, the film is also witty and high-tempo, as the audience you are unable to tear your eyes away from the screen. As this film is directed by distinguished director Guy Richie, Snatch has a star-studded cast, (even though lots of them at the time weren’t at the height of their fame.) Irish traveler ‘One Punch Mickey’ O’neil is played by Brad Pitt, Russian arms dealer ‘The Blade’ is Rade Serbedzija, professional thief and gambling addict Franky ‘Four Fingers’ is Benicio del Toro, bounty hunter ‘Bullet-Tooth Tony’ is Vinnie Jones, ‘Turkish’ as Jason Statham and ‘Tommy’ as Stephen Graham. The filming is categorised by a kinetic direction and editing style, full of ironic twists and turns. Guy Richie also deliberately likes using many of the same actors in most of his films, such as Vinnie Jones, Jason Statthan, Jason Fleming and Alan Ford. 

The first parts of filming Snatch began in October of 1999, mainly in London (for many of the gangster shots) and Buckinghamshire (to film the Irish traveler's scenes.) The film was also relatively successful in both critical response as well as financial gross: Richie made the film from a budget of $10 million, where it grossed £12,137,698 in the UK, $30.3 million in the United States and Canada, (possibly from the innocuous fascination Americans have with the British and their slang,) giving a total of $83.6 million worldwide. I feel the main success of the film overall was it gained a cult following. This may have been down to the priceless one-line zingers from Guy Richies' extraordinary scriptwriting abilities, e.g. ‘You want the caravan? You’ll get the dog’ and ‘That’s Tommy. He tells people he was named after a gun. But I know he was really named after a famous 19th-century ballet dancer.’ (Kinda have to watch it to understand...) I also feel the soundtrack played a huge part in the movie's accomplishments. Songs such as ‘Diamond’ by Klint and ‘Cross The Tracks’ by Maceo and The Macks feature in the film, gaining so much traction that they eventually released not one, but two CD’S in 2001 called ‘Snatch: Stealin’ Stones and Breakin’ Bones.’ 

My two personal favourite scenes from the film are when Micky punches a fighter out cold in a bare-knuckle fight to when he hits the ground and suddenly is filmed in slow motion with ‘Golden Brown’ by The Stranglers echoing. The other is when Micky’s caravan is set alight with someone incredibly dear to him still inside, where once again it cuts to Micky being held back by his friends in slow motion while ‘Teardrop’ by Massive Attack plays. When I saw these two scenes for the first time, they genuinely gave me goosebumps because it was so stylishly done yet still nail-biting and intense, they just portrayed how exceptional Guy Richie is as a writer and director. Moreover, the camera effects in this film are fantastic; Richie uses a plethora of polished effects such as slow-mo, stills, black and white as well as colour, all highly effective in disorientating and thrilling the audience. Eventhough most filmmakers may use these techniques, Richie has a unique and fearlessly individual way of doing these things.  

Overall, Snatch is unquestionably a cult classic. It pulls back the veil into the criminal underworld of London in an almost incongruous light we usually see London in. Filmed intelligently and purposefully, it is very hard not to enjoy this film, so kick back, relax, and thank God you aren’t in Turkish’s shoes…

Author’s Note: I hope this was what you were looking for darling! I haven’t written for Mickey for so long omg, I barely remember his accent so I hope this accurate lol, this is super short I’m sorry but sometimes thats just what happens when I’m all over the place with my writing lol 

Requested: by @stardancerluv​, Ooo could I have a Mickey and Reader after he wins his first bare knuckle match...perhaps she finally tells him how she feels because she had been so afraid watching...but he knew all along and loved her....or maybe some head cannons for him. I just rewatched Snatch...and remembered how much I love...love Mickey.

The adrenaline in the room was high. It always was when there was a fight. You and Mickey often went together and you held him back as he bet. You never bet. You watched your best friend lose enough money at the hands of others you would much rather enjoy the show without knowing something weighed in on it.

However, this being Mickey’s first bare knuckle match, you put all your money on him. 

You were standing up, hands on the edge of the ring. You usually didn’t get this into fights but your nerves were high. 

You knew how many people went to the hospital from injuries at the mat and you weren’t about ready to take your best friend and crush to any hospital tonight. Especially since you didn’t get any gas earlier when you should have.

You were screaming, cheering, yelling encouragement. Mickey caught your eye as the round ended and you gave him a worried thumbs up. He looked pretty beat. You were quite nervous. You tried to put on a brave front and you saw him give you a weak bloodied smile as well but both of you were more nervous then you cared to admit.

“You got it! You got it!” you yelled as he stood up again. You watched as he stumbled a bit, putting his hands up to defend himself and then hopping around his opponent. He was a big guy but Mickey was swifter.

You hoped.

For a second there was just a lot of quick jabs and dodges. You winced as Mickey got a hit in the chest but he quickly bounced back again with a devastating blow to the guys face. He stumbled back and you froze, holding your breath as you watched.

The opponent hit the ground and the noise seemed to focus in on the referee counting up from three. 

Then you erupted with screams. You jumped up and down and it took everything in you not to get up to the ring and throw your arms around Mickey. You promised that tonight would be the night that you told him how you felt, win or lose. The referee raised up Mickey’s bloodied arm and you clapped, hugging the strangers around you as you laughed.

Soon Mickey was running over to grab his stuff. You walked to the car outside and waited for him to emerge. A few people came with him but at the sight of you he lit up, telling the other guys to go away as he jogged over.

You threw your arms around him and he picked you up, hugging you tightly.

“Oh, I’m so proud,” you said, a beaming grin on your face as you pulled away and grabbing his cheeks. He smiled.

“Good ‘irl.” You took in a deep breath.

“Hey, while we’re both on a high I wanted to tell you something,” you said. He shook his head.

“I know.” You raised an eyebrow.

“Huh?” 

“I know how ‘ou feel. I ‘eel the same way.” 

You smiled wider if that was even possible. It had to be obvious that you were beyond happy that the world had set you up for that night, knowing it would be perfect. You 

“You scared me up there, are you sure you wanna fight again?” you asked, laughing dryly. He nodded, pointing at the group of guys that were scattering around the back parking lot.

“They said I ‘as good up there.”

“You were. Doesn’t mean it didn’t scare the crap out of me.” Mickey chuckled.

“Come ‘ere.” 

He grabbed your hips and pulled you closer to him. You weren’t objecting. You put your arms over his shoulders.

He swooped you down and kissed you.

You could have sworn that you heard cheering but it was probably just echoes from the earlier celebrations after the fight. But it also could have been the guys who followed Mickey out cheering for a long coming kiss.

Either or.

grew up in a pretty rough and dangerous neighbourhood in dc, filled with Street Rats

parents: irresponsible, violent, addicts, basically only kept him for the benefits. home life was pretty miserable where he picked up most of his traits and habits.

but at one point it got so bad, his grandma reported them and took him in. they served some time in jail. he doesn’t know what they’re up to now, doesn’t care to find out either.

no one’s perfect -- his dad obvs gets it from somewhere -- but his grandma's love doesn’t make him cry. 

but he was an ungrateful lil shit ! so after a big argument, he left her and ran away/taken to LANDAN with a gang of grifters he met on da streetz for some gigs and what he thought would be Big Money

street fights were a common occurrence re: snatch *mickey o’neil vc* i’ll fight ya for it … if dc is here he learned how to fight, london is where he learned to fight dirty

the gang began to pull cons on a Bigger Scale until they got caught ! he was a Big Coward and ran away … but was sent back to the u s of a with 0 money lol (was p traumatic actually! ppl got killed! it still haunts him!)

came back 2 grandma n said sry a bajillion times n they made up

gma works as a housekeeper for a big time politician fam in d.c. and would get a few smol jobs for him as a pool boy or whatever else rich ppl have

but then his gma got ill and they don’t have medical insurance or da money for treatment so he dropped outta school and continued 2 swindle, in d.c. or where the money was tbh

gd thing about d.c. is politicians and they have lots of money !!!

it felt weird to scam people by himself. he wasn’t used to working alone so he started off small: hung out in bars, targeted politicians. end up in a hotel - they paid for it. long story short he got enough ammo to blackmail them into giving him $$ or he’d sell photos/videos to journalists ... n we all know how homophobic politicians are :clown emoji:

newayz … one of the cons ended up being a trap (fffff). they knew about his lil tricks n wanted to use him so proposed a deal: they’d pay for his gma’s everything, put her in the best hosp, pay off debts, send him to a good school which would secure his future !! in return they wouldn’t hand him over 2 da popo, clear his record, but he’d work for them + blackmails their opponents to strong arm them into votes or w/e
