I've been quiet about Snapchat's "gender" filters because it's difficult to reconcile the cishet tendency to use gender as a way to trivialize and demean transpeople with their concurrent tendency to display an ability to play with gender tropes and display an innate understanding of the complex spectrum of gender and sexual identity in informal contexts. ⁣ ⁣ But it's not exactly surprising, either. ⁣ ⁣ When I was younger, I would've KILLED for a filter like this. Some magic method to let other people see, if only for a moment, how I saw myself. Dysphoria is a hell of a struggle, and it can be fatal if you can't quite manage to reconcile who you are with what the world tells you to be. ⁣ ⁣ As I have gotten older, and seen the struggle for equality, acceptance, and legal protections continue in fits and starts, I have come to realize that who I am, and what I show the world through my words and actions, is much more important than my youthful eagerness to exchange the societal expectations imposed upon one gender for an equally restrictive set imposed upon the other. ⁣ ⁣ The funny part, by my lights, is how little difference there is between this filtered pic and my everyday face. Did transitioning have some magic powers? Or was it my refusal to be anything but authentic in a world that demands both compliance and perfection? ⁣ ⁣ Either way, my darlings, don't let anyone, any filter, or anything else tell you who you are or what you can be.
