On an exceptionally hard day, during an exceptionally hard month, I received an anonymous manilla envelope in the mail. Inside, I found these.

My therapist knew that:

A. I love The X-Files (a normal amount)

B. I love coloring

C. That the Calm Strips she sent me last time were wearing out

I'm debating whether to turn off ask box access for people since 2/3 of it is likely scammers asking for money and 1/3 are porn accounts. I like keeping an avenue of contact open for people who genuinely want to talk, but it's gotten to the point where the constant disappointment and annoyance gives me an anti-dopamine response to seeing something in my inbox. Basically the feeling I get when getting a pile of spam snail mail that I'll have to process for recycling, but with unwanted boobs and begging.

uhhhh i honestly don't know. there's a lot of great stuff about being alive. of course there's star trek, and start trek fanfiction, and star trek fanart. and people who will listen to me talk about star trek, those are truly some of my favourites. i like music. something i'm really into these days is archiving and whenever i find a new super old site where people used to post super wild explicit gay fics i get such a rush of dopamine (i found trektales.com today and also found out that kardasi.com is fully perserved on archive.org so i'm having a great day). let's see what else. i think it's neat that we have the internet! you sent me this ask from who knows where and yet i can read it and reply to it and you'll get my reply as soon as i'm done with it! but also snail mail does still exist and people still use it which is really cool and fun to me. oh and i like books! i didn't make a post about it for some reason but i recently aquired 40 trek novels for less than 2$ each and it was sooo worth it! it's also pomelo season finally so i get to eat one of my favourite fruits now. it's almost cold enough to wear socks inside which i am also excited for, and i'm very much looking forward to nettle season, though it's still a few months away.

this was a wild ask to get out of the blue but tbh this was a really good exercise cause i've been feeling kinda down lately and focusing on all the positives really made me feel better, so thank you. sorry i rambled for so long lol

alright enough Fry angst here are some cute Fry headcanons I have

Fry got the whole planet express crew into super old music. Towards the beginning of the series nobody knew about any music from his time (the classical music baby got back joke, the “is that one of those led zeppelins ive been hearing so much about?” joke, etc) but towards the end the crew is more familiar with it and even explicitly state liking certain 20th century musicians so i like to believe they took a liking to it after Fry played it so much around them (plus music is pretty timeless)

Fry brings back old holidays no one celebrates anymore, and the crew all say they're just celebrating with him to make him feel better, but really they think its fun and are glad they can use Fry as an excuse to party lol

Because of Fry’s love for old retro crap, Bender and Leela become experts at spotting old shit at yard sales that Fry would like (tag sales are a serious sport on the NJ side of the hudson man)

Fry loves flowers, even ones that are considered weeds like dandelions. There’s not a ton of them growing in cracks in the sidewalk anymore, so whenever he sees one he’s like super excited about it

He has adhd and was unmedicated in the past, but once he came to the future he unlearned a lot of the stigma around it and learned coping skills he didn’t really have before

Subsequently his sweet tooth comes from being unmedicated, as people with adhd have chronically low dopamine levels and will often unknowingly self-medicate with sugar (can you tell where Im projecting lol)

He’s actually a pretty deep thinker, but he has a lot of trouble articulating what he’s thinking, and he has trouble keeping with just one train of thought. He’ll have incredible epiphanies about his place in the world and then just completely lose them

Fry likes to write letters to people, even though snail mail was already out of date in his time (he wrote one to Leela once as referenced in Leela’s homeworld)

I also hc that Bender keeps some of these letters in his chest compartment so he can read them when Fry isnt around (Bender, hanging up Fry’s letters and doodles in his chest with magnets: i hate fry) 

Fry still feeds stray animals (even though youre really not supposed to in NYC)

He doesn’t mind the cold at all. In the future, the average temperate is much higher than it used to be, so earthicans in the future aren’t as used to cold that Fry is used to, and despite the (lets be real, traumatic) incident of being frozen it doesnt really bring back bad memories for him. 

Fry is a really tactile person, and doesn’t mind platonic hand holding

I was a Radio Kid. I loved everything about it. You could play cassettes, you could play CDs, you could play radiowaves, you could record! Then all of a sudden radios were expensive or not even stocked. Digital music became a big thing as Millennials took up the internet, Napster was created and Italian Job was made, and then you could pirate both off the world wide web. Walkmans and CD players became yardsale fodder, swapped for an all-in-one device. Among all of the things it was able to do, it reimagined the definition and capacity of the Telephone.

It is at the very basis of itself, a communication device, a social tool. It's development as a touch reactive AI surpassed our ability to keep up with it's chemical releases at an exponential rate. This I believe created a massive generation of children growing up with the internet getting ADHD. This would have to be tested to be proven, because I am making a presumptuous statement based on meme culture. This is what we have reduced our base knowledge source to.

I go back to our first point, that the generation specific to United States is now catapulted into the psychological aspect of a dopamine inducing tech orgy that is known as the phone. That's what it is. Telegrams used to be sent for emergencies, snail mail was a lot more common to catch up with someone. You could slap a stamp on a five page letter versus pay by the minute on the phone, heck that's if you remembered everything!

The phone is now our daily guide post. Where is your phone right now? Do you have panic or security? It used to be stuck to a wall and now its in our pocket. It is following us at all times. We are social without even knowing when we share our location.

Our phone is now something we make sure we have on us when we leave the house just like our keys. We have accepted this never ending black hole of a neurotransmitter rush. It is its own vortex...... a black mirror.

Anyway yeah that's what I thought about when I plugged in my stereo thats as old as I am. I grew up with this thing blasting rock, metal, grunge, everything. I did a couple moves here and there so I didn't get to set up my place much. Been using my phone the last 8 or 9 mos and its really good to hear my baby play tunes again 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 maybe I'll forget about my phone now that its plugged in 😁😁🙃

Also, when did fan mail snail mail addresses become Not A Thing? Maybe this is a hipster thing, and I've never been a good correspondent, but sometimes you want to actually take the pretty stationery and the stamp and your post office's time to deliver the letter just so the person on the other end can read your admiration, or not, and there actually isn't that instant dopamine rush you get when a celeb or their team reads your DM or "likes" your tweet.

Feeling ambivalent

Do any fandom elders have advice on how it is to feel like a Fandom Old? I've technically been a Fandom Old for a while but I've only started to Really Feel It very recently.

Like, my first fandoms were:

Power Rangers

Newsies

The Mighty Ducks

and don't get me wrong, I love that people young enough to be my kids are into these fandoms because it's the exact same way I was about Star Wars and Anne McCaffrey's Pern books, but part of me still remembers when I was an average-age fan and the "fandom olds" (for Mighty Ducks, e.g.) were college students.

I just want to build a practice where I can be like this totally awesome first-gen fan I saw on the bus one time George Takei was a guest at my local con, and not some bitter hipster who's the fandom equivalent of a fossil.

I don't even know if I'm making sense right now.
