Sex in writing has been called a lot of things over my years in fandom. I remember the citrus scale, I’ve been around that long. But I’m not here to reminisce, for the most part, I'm here to give advice for writing sexual situations in fic.

I have quite a few tools to write lemons, but first I ask a question.

Is this emotional sex or physical sex, because there is a big big difference. It controls how it is described and what the characters focus on in the moment.

Emotional sex tends to come with a lot of situational and emotional build-up. The readers need to understand why the act is so emotional, and so most of the sex scene is spent in the character’s heads and hearts.

If it is a physical sex scene, then there needs to be some build-up, but you can get away with less. The characters focus mostly on what is going on outside their heads. There is a lot of action prose, a lot of what they are doing, rather than how they feel about it.

Once I know what direction I am going, I move on to other tools.

One of which is porn.

I will not lie and say I have not watched porn depicting a sexual act that I am trying to write to research it. I have also paused, turned my head and asked myself where the fuck is their hand. I use porn for physical sex scenes a lot, especially ones I don’t have experience with, mostly to understand where the body connects (besides the obvious), the flow of movement, and how labor intensive it looks. Porn gifs also work for this, if you have just one section, you are trying to get just right.

Now, when I write something more emotional, I don’t need to involve a lot of visuals, so I instead draw stick figures. I draw figures so that I know where the hands are, where the feet are. A simple sketch can show you where everyone is positioned, so that you know where they can move, and what they have to let go of to grab something else. Because you cannot grasp three places simultaneously if you have two hands.

I hate hate hate when there are too many hands in a sex scene! If you take one thing away from this, know where their hands are!

Another tool I use is music. Most of my writing is done to specific music selected for the mood. I have an entire playlist on Spotify called Smutlist, which is what I use to write Smut. It features many genres, but the mood/theme is the same, and with that in the background, it sort of puts my brain in the right mindset.

I said above, if you take anything from this, it's the hands, but I lied.

What I want you to take from this is the next part.

The most crucial thing in all my sex scenes is sensory immersion.

I do my best to implore as many of the five senses as I can. I even have bottle caps on my desk with the senses written on them, so that I can flip them over if I use it, so that I can use the next one. Sex is already physical, so touch is a given, but when you include taste (and not just salt ya’ll), sound, smell, and sight, you can make the reader feel as if they are immersed in the experience

Here are some small examples.

Ways to use touch: gliding fingers over skin, skin pressed against skin, the drag of fingernails, the bite of pain, the soothing sensation of lips

Ways to use taste: tasting the sex in the air, the sweet taste of sweat, a kiss flavored by something just consumed (also can be the afters of oral sex)

Ways to use scent: smelling sex in the air, the distinct scent of their partner and/or their bathing products, the scent of linen if their face is pressed into.

Ways to use sound: of course dialogue, but also how it is being said, breathing, the creak of furniture, the sound of the wind outside, the crackling of a fire, the voices in the other room, the gasps and groans and murmured prayers

Ways to use sight: skin flushing, marks left by mouths or fingers, shadows over faces, sweat rolling down skin, physically watching the partner move and being mesmerized by it.

These are all ways to include your senses to make a scene more vivid.

I want to close this with something that I actually learned from a fellow writer, TheFrenchPress. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to write smut if you aren’t in the mood to write it. It's not a requirement for a good story, and sometimes, the story doesn’t need it, and is better without it.

Don’t feel bad if you don’t want to write sex scenes. And if you do, don’t feel bad if you think they are awful.

Everyone has written a scene with a disembodied ghost hand groping someone at some point in their life.
