A Note On... Mushrooms and Homes

Smushi Come Home is a 3D puzzle platformer by SomeHumbleOnion! Find your way home through the forest with the help of new friends!

This game was another quick one after I spent time finishing Yakuza 6 (which is a long JRPG, took me around 26hrs). Very nice change of pace, to be sure!

Smushi is the bravest mushroom I've ever met. Truly a joy to play as them! The adventure is split into three areas, each with their own gimmicks and puzzles and mechanics. They've all got different looks to them too, which was really nice.

Gameplay-wise, this game actually has a lot to offer in terms of world traversal. There's diving, gliding, and climbing, and they're all implemented nicely! Well, I think diving could use a little tweaking because swimming underwater is a little unwieldy, but overall still good. The puzzles are spread out, which gives you to explore the areas at your own pace.

The characters are all quirky and ultimately not many are that important once you finish an area. But that works! The narrative doesn't suffer from having all these side characters, especially since Smushi's goal (while I didn't ignore anyone) is to get back home.

Smushi Comes Home is a super cozy game that almost everyone can enjoy! Plus if you love mushrooms, that's a pretty good bonus.

i completed Mail Time & Smushi Come Home

its fun to be a cute little mushroom fella

so on the surface, these games are pretty similar. you're a tiny protagonist with a glider going on an exploration platforming adventure with a light-hearted tone that you can beat in an afternoon or two. it's the differences that really make this interesting.

first, the structure of the gameplay loop. in mail time, the namable protagonist (I'm just gonna call her Maily) is a mail scout that has to deliver one letter, but the only way you can get to your destination is getting the help of the locals with little side quests. with Smushi, you're picked up by a bird and taken away, and you need to get back to your family, but the only way you can get to your destination is getting the help of the locals with little side quests. the main difference is this: Maily stays in the same large location all game, and you make progress through the plot in a more social way. you need permission to pass, help building bridges, etc. you spend a lot of time exploring this single area, getting familiar with it as you backtrack and carry messages between everyone. Smushi spends about 1/3 or 1/4 of the game in each map, and moves on when he's done with no mandatory backtracking. you CAN go back to previous maps, but only for minigames

this has a pretty big effect on the rest of the gameplay. firstly, Smushi is a lot more linear. your character earns new abilities to progress in new areas, and new things aren't focused on for long. once you get the extended climbing hook, it's not mandatory after the figurative ability-shaped locked door in the same world, even though it still comes in handy. Maily's abilities are pretty stagnant, the focus is more on plot progression than character progression. this is kinda mandated by the single-map design, unless you wanna make a metroidvania

another thing is the collectables. Smushi's green crystals are abundant and interchangeable; they're a currency. you can trade em in for cosmetics, and they're necessary for a few progression moments, so you're encouraged to stop by on your way to pick em up. but you're never really hurting for em if you make a point to collect them, you don't have to comb through the whole level unless you really really want to. Mail Time encourages you to be way more thorough. there's a little quest where you can get different hats by finding different fungi. they're pretty well hidden, so you've gotta look more thoroughly to get em all. so, this effects what the player pays attention to and complements the level design on a large scale. Smushi is more about the adventure of going home, so the player isn't expected or encouraged to linger as much on their journey. mail time's collectables encourage you to shake it up on your back-and-forth fetch quests to explore more of the environment. both do a really good job of complimenting the level design

this was less of a review and more of an analysis, but I recommend both games! they're on the shorter side, but if there's a good sale then it's totally worth the price. if this piqued your interest, give em a try!
