the NOT QUITE CHEERY list

So I went for a walk with my parents this evening. I fell back a few steps because who doesn’t need personal space?

On the left, my father walking, loudly talking about how his students are ‘uncouth morons’.

On the right, my mother, deeply praising how my younger sibling, despite having a skin infections on her foot, attends her athletic classes diligently each day.

None of them realizing that I, the one who’s heart they have conveniently been burying knives into for the past oh... 14? 15 years?, am just walking behind them, and I in fact HAVE managed to stay alive, defying the crushing weight of the different colliding worlds I am being made to carry on my back forcefully. I am alive, not knowing how and not knowing why. Nevertheless, I am alive. and listening. Silent, but listening.

So let’s see a few years from now, when I’ll be legal where I’m from, let’s see who walks behind you when you’ve got choice words to say about others choices, when you’ll be too busy staring at the eye of your own storm to bother about the one that swept away most of my youth.

And you’ll still be walking the same dusty road that appears to lead into the sunset, but in reality, leads the opposite way, still talking and talking and not bothering to hear the loud cries that can be heard by hearts farther away from you than the idea of comfort, and hearts that care enough to want to do something. Until finally, the cries stop, and you still don’t realize, still treading towards that storm, still running your mouths. But I’ll be gone. I’ll be gone and I’m sure you still won’t realize, like you didn’t realize how far back I had fallen, how my silence was the cry you’d been ignoring all along. I’ll be gone. And then there’s be nothing but the wind and the gravel beneath your feet to witness your words. I’ll be gone faster that you can say ‘Damaged’. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Those who read this, come at me all you wants.
