alrig so yk how in stuff like fancfics Phol is usually depicted to be the one to curse and smidley is the one to be like “no cursing!!!!” Well. What if I said. Phiol would be the one to dodge cursing and smirlie is the one to curse. Phsl says “what the flozwad” and smile was drawn to say fuck!!!! Let her curse!!!!!!!!!!!

gonna rant about music again. with a side of poetry
one of my favorite lyrical callbacks of all time comes from farewell by smidley. for context, smidley is the side project of foxing lead vocalist conor murphy. foxing released an album called the albatross in 2013, which is a concept album about a deeply troubled relationship and its eventual conclusion. very sad, very beautiful album. would recommend.
anyway, a song from that album, inuit, contains these lyrics, which are a reference to a poem called Not Waving but Drowning by stevie smith
it's very much an up-to-interpretation kind of poem, but i think its quite heavily implied to be about a man who quietly struggled with severe depression, eventually committing suicide because of it.
i could give a full analysis of this poem, its really beautifully written, but ill stick to the line that these lyrics are referencing. in the context of the poem, i think the line "not waving, but drowning" most likely alludes to how the people in the man's life didn't recognize how deeply sad he felt internally, whether that be because he didn't outwardly show symptoms of depression, or because he purposefully masked those feelings as to not concern or trouble those around him. another thing to keep in mind was that this poem was written in the early 1970s, obviously mental health issues weren't nearly as understood by the general public as they [kind of. maybe] are now.
getting to the actual callback, the opening line of farewell by smidley, off their 2022 album here comes the devil, is "i'm not drowning, i'm waving." and the first time i heard that after listening to the albatross roughly. a fuck ton of times. i damn near cried
honestly, and this is entirely speculation, the whole song could be a kind of small follow-up to the albatross. i think the strongest evidence for this comes from the lyrics of verse 3 - onwards
its kind of like a more amicable goodbye message to the person that was the subject of the albatross.
basically, all this to say that. i love when musicians do this kind of thing. a lot of great albums and art kind of unfortunately come from a place of great sadness or emotional pain, so its always nice to see later work that's. more reassuring? idunno what the best term would be to describe it but. its a nice reminder that sadness doesn't have to constantly hang over your head and weigh on your consciousness.
/end rant
