Was lucky enough to get some photos in May immediately before the coolest looking brutalist building in the city was closed forever for demolition so we can get a fourth sports stadium nobody will use.

(I clearly didn't fix the advancing lever as well as I thought on the '77 Smena)

hi lilly i would like to rant about this cool vintage viewfinder camera that was found at my grandmother's house

it's from sometime between 1963 and 1971, because that's when this specific brand of cameras were made. it was made in russia by a company based in what is not st. petersburg and was the soviet union's attempt to export things to the rest of western society.

it uses 35mm film, and has manual winding up and shutter cocking mechanisms, and it has a self-timer.

it was originally made as the смена 8 (said 'smena') but in english-speaking countries it was rebranded to the cosmic 35 or global 35.

the one i have is the global 35

i've been taking a few photos today to test it out, but i don't even really know if it works until i use all the film and go to get it developed.

i have to do more research about what shutter speed to use and what aperture to use when.

but i'm super excited about this and i'm being a huge nerd :3

As a person who loves cameras, I did hear about that and that’s so cool that she has one . I know they we’re barely sold in the US too!!

I wish I knew more about cameras like that to tell you but sadly I don’t :(( but if you need any help I’ll gladly give some!!!

Honestly, you can get a Canon DSLR refurbished for like $150-$200. Check eBay.

Oh, you can, it’s just kinda overwhelming imo and some of my hesitation with that is that the average DSLR is extremely chonky.

I’ve been looking at a few different kinds of cameras, and having done that, I know what I’d ideally want is probably a mirrorless for the slimmer profile (I hate hauling around heavy stuff). and for digital, I’d rather have a camera that can do some manual adjusting (dials, not just auto-everything or digital only menus).

For film cameras, I’ve bought a few off goodwill and will have to see if I can get them repaired. If they’re not too pricey to bring up to snuff, then I have some solid choices - a Smena (it’s a 6? Or 8? IDR), a Yashica Electro 35 (rangefinder), and a Minolta SR-T102 SLR. The minolta is definitely pretty heavy, but I was able to buy one that came with a spare lens AND came with the SR-T guide book. I got each of these cameras for $40 or less, which is nice. I’m hoping I get either the Electro or the Minolta working. If I can get them cleaned and repaired decently, all I’ll need is battery converters and film to get those running.

I really want to get into photography but holy shit is it absurdly expensive lol.

Swear to God sometimes I'll be like "oh what's a nice beginner camera" and people will be all "here's a $600 piece of equipment. Also this older camera that's still good is still like $400 used."
