and like i love a misery fest when its well written, but when its backed with All That (and yknow, tainted by its shitty author behind it) and still somehow being spouted as The Best Thing Ever it really makes one.. so. so damn tired of it

I think I've reached a point of disliking SMEN where it being suggested for a character kinda makes me roll my eyes

Like, yeah sure it's depressing and tragic, but not in... A fun way. It's just an overexaggerated, drawn-out misery-fest with an unsatisfying "gotcha, bet you didn't see that coming" ending. And that's coming from someone who likes tragedies.

A little more about me:

I started playing Fallen London in December of 2020 after being recommended to it by a friend, and since that day it has consumed my waking thoughts. I’ve done more or less everything in both Fallen London and Sunless Skies to this point. Don't intend to play Sunless Sea. Still working my way through Mask of the Rose... I wasn't a huge fan of it lol but still don't want spoilers for it.

Some of my favorite things in the game are the Calendar Council, the cosmic chessboard, the Lady in Lilac, Irem, and the Masters. Love the revolutionaries but love villains too. The Masters are scary powerful, the Masters are cartoonishly evil, the Masters are fluffye, the Masters are comically incompetent clowns, etc etc. And.... Judgements hot

In addition to Fallen London, I love math, literature, and history. Looking at social issues in fiction is important and interesting to me. I'm gay for space.

To all of my Dark Souls followers, I ask you to bear with my Fallen London stuff a bit longer, we’re almost there folks. I’ve been thinking about this for awhile actually, and my answer is a bit odd. 

When I first heard about Seeking Mr Eaten’s Name, I was doing the usual stuff in FL, grinding notability, items, such like that. I had gained much, and this was a story of self-destruction and loss. Yet far as I could, I could not place it out of my mind. So, I decided to make an alternate account to do the job so my main character, Samuel Blackwell III could survive. Well, I realized Samuel had a better resource pool to do the job than Sammy, so their roles reversed.

I got into the storyline and at first it was just this really dark, strange thing. Which is part of its charm, honestly. It’s a Faustian tale except the bargain is awful to begin with. You only gain pain and horror as your reward for undergoing it. But, this is where it gets a bit weird for me and kind of awkward to talk about. Something about Seeking Mr Eaten’s Name, and the lore I learned as I went on, it hit something I hadn’t really known how to dealt with.

I was fairly religious growing up, especially as a teenager, but just time, depression, and other things wore it down and broke it to pieces for me.  It left me with a deep anxiety, and a pain that was hard to describe. I used to describe to people who I could talk to about it as, the reality didn’t live up to the promise (Those who’ve done SMEN know where I’m going already with this). Then enter the story of Mr Candles.

I don’t know as much about its character as I think, or would like, it was a Master of the Bazaar as much as anyone was, but there were acts of generosity and charity in its past. But it was betrayed by the other Masters to end the 2nd City’s treachery. Long story short, Candles dies and gains the name Mr Eaten. The entire storyline involves uncovering things from its perspective, in a sense, with the promise of retribution for the failure to uphold another promise. 

I honestly can’t explain to you how or why, but this story of damnation, pain, and loss became something of catharsis for me. All the negative emotions that had had nowhere to go finally had something to focus on, something to relate to, something that understood what that meant. It gave me a sense of closure to something I never thought could be healed. It probably does sound crazy, probably isn’t entirely healthy, but people find resolution in the oddest places sometimes. Mine just happened to be at the bottom of a well. 

Now, I’ll put it plainly, there’s things in that storyline that, I would never condone, indulge in, or partake in reality of course. That doesn’t even need to be said. But, I have to say it to Alexis Kennedy, the writer and author of this bizarre tale of woe and damnation, and Failbetter Games, for giving me this catharsis. A good story touches the heart and mind, and can wipe away the stains on a soul, remove the memories of chains, and even help stop a weeping scar. Even if it is a dark one. That’s why I love Fallen London, and that’s why I started Seeking Mr Eaten’s Name. By allowing me to damn Samuel Blackwell III, you helped me put something behind me I never thought could be. Thank you all, sincerely, from the deepest well of my heart.

Looking at The Recent Jamie Drama and also remembering your post about OC rivalries/general pettiness, I've realized that Null would most likely start reading Jamie after this. They like to go where the attention and influence is, and Jamie sure is at the center of a fair bit of that at the moment! Negative attention, sure, but attention nonetheless.

The thing is that Null is also a writer (more often a poet but still) and their favourite genre is unfortunately plagiarism, so. How do you think Jamie would react to a sudden abundance of poorly disguised copies of the smut? (Funniest answer I think is sending it to Sylvia to be eviscerated)

(also feel free to ignore if you don't want this type of interaction, I've wanted to engage more with other people's OCs on here forever but I'm aware Null Type Activities are not the least obtrusive or friendliest way to start lmao)
