“It’s just a cold, man, seriously!”
“Mhm.” Stede crossed his arms, looking down at Ed where he was still refusing to let him get out of bed, deeply unimpressed. “How about a deal? If you can make it more than ten seconds without coughing your head off, I’ll let you get up.”
“You’re on,” Ed said, immediately, which turned out to be a bit of a terrible start, because talking irritated his scratchy throat and sent him immediately into a bout of painful coughs.
Ed tried to hide them by pretending he was just clearing his throat. Judging by the look on Stede’s face, he wasn’t buying it.
“It’s just a cold,” Ed repeated, staring down at his lap. He’d woken up with a pounding headache, swollen sinuses, so much nasal congestion his head felt like it was stuffed full of cotton balls, and a sore, achy body. He was aware he probably couldn’t have looked more pitiful if he’d been trying.
“Ed.” Stede sat next to him on the bed, holding out his hand in an open invitation. Ed took it, lacing their fingers together. “Why are you so resistant to admitting you should just stay in bed today?”
Part of it, genuinely, was that Ed had been up and about with much worse than a little head cold. He’d once had to time leading his crew while they sailed through a squall around stitching himself up so he wouldn’t bleed out before they made it to calmer waters. This little cold was something he never would’ve thought about staying in bed for, and that was the honest truth.
So:
“I don’t need to,” Ed said, honestly, with a shrug. “I can tough it out. Plus, we’ve had that reservation at the new restaurant down at the market for weeks, and you’ve been looking forward to it, and I don’t want you to miss it, and-”
“Ah,” Stede said, in that specific, annoyingly smug voice way that didn’t exactly say there it is, but might as well have. “We can always reschedule.”
“But-”
“I don’t want to go if you’re not feeling well,” Stede shrugged. “You’ll just have a miserable time, and I’ll be worried about you, because I love you.”
“I love you, too,” Ed said automatically.
“Well, you wouldn’t deny the love of your life the opportunity to take care of you, now, would you?” Stede tapped the tip of Ed’s red, snuffly nose with an index finger. “You stay right here. I’m making soup.”
Ed could have fought it; he knew Stede wouldn’t force him to stay in bed if he really didn’t want to. But a day of laying in bed with Stede fussing over him was starting to sound kind of…nice.
Stede made him a big bowl of tomato and roasted red pepper soup, darting from the kitchen to the bedroom every few minutes to bring Ed handkerchiefs, and tea with honey to soothe his throat, and cream to spread on his chest to ease his congestion, and books to keep him entertained. Ed was a little feverish, and Stede insisted on checking his temperature exclusively by pressing his lips to Ed’s forehead.
The soup was, technically, edible. Stede had somehow managed to overcook it, and also undercook the peppers, which were still a bit crunchy. Red peppers also probably hadn’t been a smart idea for a guy with a cold; Stede knew Ed loved peppers, but they didn’t help his streaming nose.
It was the best soup Ed had ever eaten. He scraped his bowl clean.
Then Stede started looking like he was about to climb back into bed with him, and Ed stopped him with a hand on his chest, not letting him get within smooching range.
“You don’t want to kiss me right now, I’m gross,” he said.
“You are not gross, you’re sick!” Stede looked genuinely offended on his behalf. “You poor thing, you deserve extra kisses right now, if anything.”
“Well, when you put it that way,” Ed acquiesced easily. His cheeks were sore from how swollen his sinuses were, but Stede’s kisses were incredibly gentle. “Maybe no cuddles, though. I don’t want you getting sick, too.”
“Love, we slept with you quite literally on top of me,” Stede said reasonably. “If I’m going to catch it, I think I already have.”
“Oh,” Ed realized. “Oh, no. You’re going to be the worst patient.”
“I resent that accusation,” Stede said. “I’ll have you know that I am a model patient.”
“Yeah, we’ll see about that in a few days.”
“Hey, Ed?” Stede shut him up with a gentle kiss, smiling against his lips. “Just let me hold you.”
Ed mimed zipping his lips shut, moving over in bed just far enough for Stede to climb in before snuggling up into his side.
He hadn’t realized how cold he was, how much his sore, sick body was just longing for comfort, until he had Stede next to him. He sighed in relief, cuddling up as close as he could, clinging to Stede’s middle. Stede was warm, and soft, and knew how to hold him just right to make him feel better.
“There we go.” Stede pressed a kiss to Ed’s forehead. “See, this is nice, isn’t it? We’ll run a bath in a bit, I think - the steam might help clear up your sinuses.”
“Sure,” Ed agreed. He swallowed, some of the doubts he’d been trying to ignore pushing back in. “Are you sure this isn’t a bother? And you’re not mad about your reservation? And I’m not just annoying you?”
“There is nowhere else I’d rather be,” Stede promised. “You’re the love of my life, even when you feel a bit like shit, and you’re sneezing all over my nice handkerchiefs and sweating through the pillows.”
“Mm.” Ed felt himself starting to drift off. “Just wait ‘til I sneeze on you.”
“Just part of the job,” Stede accepted bravely, and Ed fell asleep with a smile on his lips.

It was Friday afternoon, and I had just gotten to the theater. Whenever I'm on my way to the theater, I stop by at a bodega to pick up some coconut water and dinner/lunch for me and Jason since we shared a dressing room. I always get myself a torta with asada and Jason a chicken quesadilla.
I walked in through the stage door, checking in before making my way upstairs to my dressing room. I said hi to Emma, who was vlogging, alongside SarahGrace, Tilly, and Melody. I made my way to the dressing room, knocking on the door out of habit. I heard a muffled "come in!" which was obviously Jason.
I opened the door, seeing him in his chair with his guitar on his lap.
"Hi Jasonnn, I got you dinner." I said, placing the box with his food in front of him, alongside his coconut water.
"Thank you, I'm so hungry." He said, touching my arm gently as I moved around him to go to my chair. I simply nodded my head, sitting down and opening my box of food. I picked up my torta and took a bite, before sipping on my horchata. Jason looked at me, confused and curious as to what I was drinking.
"What is that?" He asked, genuinely curious, which I always thought was cute. I would be lying if I said I didn't have feelings for him, who wouldn't? He was tall, and he was kind. He was smarted and talented and sooo easy to love. He was the heartthrob of the show, so you can't blame me.
"It's horchata.' I said, taking another sip while looking at him.
"Horchata?"
"Yeah, it's made out of like rice water and cinnamon, it's really good." I replied, tilting the cup as to offer him a sip. He leaned over, placing his lips on the straw and taking a drink. A sound of enjoyment came from his lips.
"Wo-wow, thats really good." he said, a smile on his face as he took a sip out of his coconut water. I smiled in return, taking another bite of my torta, before putting it down and beginning to get ready for the show.

Later that night, during intermission. I went to me and Jason's dressing room, where he was sat in his chair once more.
"Hey Jason" I said, my breathing a little uneven since I just came back from performing "Run Run Brother". Jason smiled, a soft "hi" escaping his lips as I sat down next to him in my chair. I took a sip out of my water, as Jason placed a handful of candy on my side of our shared vanity. I looked down at the candy in confusion, before glancing up at him.
"what's this?" I asked, my hand digging through the different varieties of candy.
"the stage manager gave it to me but, I thought you'd want it." He said, a soft smile on his face as a small pink hue appeared on his cheeks. I smiled in return, leaning over and hugging Jason.
"Thank you."

A few days later, I was walking through a local five below since I had some time before I had to be at the theater, and was just browsing around. I then came across a poster of the movie version of "The Outsiders", which made me overjoyed. I quickly picked up the roll, and continued browsing before heading to the checkout. I paid for the poster and some candy, alongside a coconut water for Jason, before making my way to the theater.
I got there in no time since I took the subway, and quickly made my way inside, checking in before making my way to the dressing room. I knocked, hearing Jason say his usual muffled "come in!". I opened the door and smiled, the bag full of candy, coconut water, and a poster sticking out causing him to give me an amused look.
"Look what I got!" I said, pulling out the poster before placing the bag on his side of the vanity. I quickly took off the plastic, unrolling it to show him the poster. His face lit up, a smile forming as he gently took it from my hands.
"Oh my God" He said, his smile bright, which made me feel warm inside.
"You can keep it, I have no space on my side of the room" I said, gesturing to my side of the wall, which was covered in pictures and posters and other little trinkets.
"Really? Thank you" He replied, quickly moving to hang up the poster, which made me giggle. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, finding peace in moments like these. if only I had the confidence to tell him.

Not to long after while we were getting ready, I played some music from my playlist just to get us in the spirit and pumped up for the show. When all of a sudden, a sweet and slow song came on. I was about to switch it to something more upbeat, before Jason stopped me while taking off his phone. Clearly, he found a perfect moment to capture. He started recording and propped his phone on the table, before offering me his hand.
I took it, standing up as he pulled me flush against his chest, slowly beginning to sway me. I smiled at this, letting out a soft chuckle as he spun me around, the camera catching this whole moment. We continued dancing for a few moments, feeling nothing but peace in the chaotic storm that was our lives. Jason spun me once more as the song ended, keeping me against him.
I looked up at him, a soft pink hue coming to both of our cheeks. My breath hitched at our proximity, my heart practically beating out of my chest.
Then, our lips met softly, a hesitant brush that sent a jolt of electricity through me. The world around us melted away—the laughter of children, the rustling leaves—all that existed was the warmth of Jason's lips against mine.
It felt tentative, like the first steps of a dance, and yet there was a certainty in it, a sweet promise of what was to come. As we pulled back, our foreheads resting together, I could hardly believe it had finally happened. I then pulled a little more back to look at him, speaking softly.
“I… I really value our friendship, but lately, I’ve realized that I have feelings for you. More than just friends. I know it might change things between us, and I don’t want to lose what we have, but I had to be honest.” I said, my heart beating so loud I'm sure he could hear it.
It was silent for a moment, before he smiled as he spoke.
"I’ve been feeling something too, but I didn’t know how to say it. I thought it might ruin our friendship.”
“So… what do we do now?" I asked, my hands gently holding onto his biceps as I let out a breath of relief.
“I think we take a chance. I really like you. I’ve just been scared to say it.” My heart began beating faster at his words, I couldn't believe it!
“Really?” I asked, still in shock. Jason nodded his head, a shy smile on his face as he spoke once more.
“So, what do you say we try this? Together?”

It's been almost two years since that day, me and Jason were stronger than ever now. We even had our own little apartment and a siamese kitty we named 'Marcia'.
Me and Jason did a couple gigs here and there, often playing at little venues and sometimes bars. Just to keep things going. Most of the time however, I was at home. I would take care of some chores, (Jason insisted he should also do them to so I wouldn't have to do everything on my own.)
Life felt great, and with Jason by my side, I knew we would be okay.

who's gonna write the stranger things/byler/lumax amazing race competition reality show au???
like byler is marketed as the nerdy childhood best friends team, “we've already gone on much crazier quests together when we were ten so this race is gonna be a piece cake!”
the whole audience at home picking up on their insane chemistry like... 👀
they're the clear front runners from the start because they hardly need to talk at all to get things done, work so quickly on their feet, mike is a crazy good strategist, and they’re always on the same page. and ToTally side eye other teams that are a mess, judgy shared smirks and eye rolls.
I know mike would be taking the whole thing soooo seriously while will is like :) ☺️ as mike figures out all the clues in seconds. even better if in this universe they already know lumax so mike is extra competitive bc he wants to beat them.
lumax is the loud and funny bickering couple, (also *cough* the couple everyone is attracted to) either freshly newlyweds, or just engaged. they have a million moments in the show where something goes wrong and they look at each other like 'wtf?!' 'this isn't my fault!' 'well you said we didn't have to worry about water!' they still would somehow manage to pull through and do okay
they are more 'secret planners' being sneaky that the audience is also blindsided by some of their actions. they excel best at the physical challenges that’s where they don’t need to check in w the other, but sometimes also really surprise everyone with their smarts.
also 100% love being sabateurs!!! very excited to fuck over another team if they can. if it airs at a time of social media people would be making comps of all their little zingers, one liners, and banter.
and simply bc i think this would be SO funny is dustin and mr. clarke as a team. teacher and ex-student team. the science guys! however despite being super smart a lot of their skills and knowledge aren't translating to most of these practical challenges and obstacles (mr. clarke more than dustin).
they don't do the best communicating with locals and stuff of the like, but people LOVE to watch them, i just have this vision of mr. clarke having to sky dive or crawl through some dark cave and freaking out, while dustin yells at him to keep going. instant comedy gold to the folks back home. dusitn for some reason still refers to mr. clarks AS mr. clarke.
they would also be the team hit with every detour task, slowing them down so much, dustin is so irate every time while mr. clarke is like weirdly overtly optimistic bc he's really there to just have fun. (like yes a steve/dustin team would be great too but i think i'd rather a steve/robin or a robin/nancy team alongside these)

Lazy Fair
A president who doesn’t touch anything is the republic’s best hope. But self-control is not a typical characteristic of applicants. Americans who tire of being groped must rely on conditioning to dodge handsy executives. Harassment doesn’t become legal when a politician lingers on a hug too long.
As with babysitters not letting charges juggle drills, the absence of destruction is tough to notice but crucial to sense. A term would ideally be an actively passive process. Sadly, interviewers are not about to hire some CEO who trusts them to negotiate.
Nostalgia junkies who miss the ancient era of 2019 are really just longing for Donald Trump to again be useless. An all-time bluffer’s emblematic ineptitude despite rather brassy claims to the contrary constitute his version of effectiveness, which is to commandeer the bus wheel in order to drive it classier. It’s just like how success at winning an election differs from whether or not the person who receives the most electoral votes may not be smart or good or talented.
The insatiable urge to grab everything for the alleged benefit of the fondles is far from the only thing Trump shares in common with a Clinton. A horndog president too busy seducing a zaftig intern to do the same with the economy offered the best possible precedent in an era where nobody minds their own business.
Broke and busted Americans miss aspects the last president couldn’t manage to muck up. It wasn’t for lack of trying. But Trump’s inability to molest everything was a gift of an unanswered prayer to himself. Doing things never works out for him despite the most unearned assurances in civilization’s history. The person now ripping off perception prepared with a long career of pretending to be a corporate titan as he lost money spinning roulette wheels openly rigged in the house’s favor.
Business was better before taking on a president who thinks hassling everyone but shoplifters assists the economy. Credit something a different false savior claimed to manifest when mere existence got it done. The free market works fantastically when clumsy amateur mechanics don’t attempt needless repairs. Relative prosperity must’ve been spurred by their savior laying his very normal-sized hands upon it. Inspiring people to get rich by slapping names on trash is about as useful.
All thriving takes is enough restraint to stop printing money. I know it’s tempting to think you can get rich by having more. But even the Goonies realized they couldn’t get away with running the presses. The Treasury’s currency is a half-step above counterfeit. Handing it out makes it worthless, which is one of those mean things like ice cream being unhealthy.
Explaining to the incumbent that not everything wanted happens isn’t going to sink in now. After all, this is not just someone who’s spent a lifetime in politics but specifically Biden. The commander-in-chief has enough trouble understanding how neckties work. How can you get something that’s wider then one’s head around one’s neck? Whoever dresses him must explain what’s happening every morning.
Fuel expenses do something as remarkable as the commodity itself making cars go. All a president has to do is nothing for the cost to become reasonable. It’s not for lack of gasoline conglomerates trying to pump up prices, as they want to sell it at a the same price per volume as plutonium laced with meth. Meanwhile, those consuming it aspire to pay as much as they would for jugs of emergency water from Save-A-Lot. I wonder if there’s a way for them to meet in the middle.
A president can take credit for the affordability of traveling around, although the ambulatory don’t have to give it. Trusting adults like they’ve been given allowances for the first time is inscrutable notion in an era where whoever’s president defines not only the government but the nation. Those things are supposed to be separate, too, for the record.
Two awful idiots like getting their hands on others as respective manifestations of their grabby philosophies. Decent people wish it were only figurative. The prospective final two are different styles of perverts. The one who thinks you’ll be impressed by what an alpha stud he is if he beds enough peroxide donor recipients equipped with plastic chassis vies with the creep who molests wives other than his own and any children within his greasy reach. But you do get to pick.
An inept presidency takes different forms. Based on the rather pushy take on the presidency that’s been trendy this century, failing at grabbing is a triumph for the respect of those the leader hopes to help by intervening. Doofus ex machina offers a most unsatisfying conclusion.
Lickspittles who worship the previous president for what he does should be thankful for what he didn’t. After all, the only good parts came when he left things alone. Praising Trump for aspects that thrived because he failed to toy with them sums him up in a way cult enlistees can’t grasp. The best businessman of all time couldn’t figure out how to violate every aspect, and he naturally demands credit.
A mature nation needs a different kind of toddler president. This hasn’t been a place for grownups despite time advancing indifferently. Anyone with wisdom at any age avoids the current variety which throws tantrums around or past the age of 80. The ability to restrain shrieking is common amongst many humans in kindergarten who don’t go on to become president.
Thorough adults should seek a presidential option who treats the nation as a visit to a childless aunt’s house. Respect the wishes of someone who acquired fragile items. Refraining from smashing like a big boy is part of becoming head of state. The fact it’s not explains why the state heads the wrong way.
