Got an even more edited femscout (several months old, edits were made last year I think), some double exposure posters (2 or 3 weeks old I think? And I’ve finally shown Jerry, holy shit), and 2 posters made to go with the Bonk! background femscout but they didn’t really match, so they’re at the bottom. I spent at least a day making the older olivia model, I figure I should use it more. Oh and a small-jawed, moustacheless Agent Gunn that I edited for myself just to see what he’d look like. And the answer is weirdly good.

Summertime Smalljaws

This heat just won't go away. Just when you thought Fall was here and you were getting the hoodies out, heat wave. Daytime temps hit the 80s again and the beginning of that cool weather bite is gone in a flash. So, what do we do? Sit around and wait out the heat?

Nope.

Adjust tactics and find the fish. Rivers are a great option this time of year. River fish are usually more aggressive feeders and at times easier to locate and catch. Not to mention a river fish fights current it's whole life and is usually a solid block of muscle because of it. When water levels get low in a river system, look for the deepest spots available. Fish who are spread out during high water can be stacked like cord wood during this low water period.

Fishing the upstream side of a deep hole is best. Active fish will sit in current breaks (stumps, large boulders) and seams (areas where food is collected by how the water flows) waiting for something edible to be swept by. When temps are high a fishes metabolism is high as well. This means a fish needs a lot of energy and in turn has to feed multiple times a day. Take advantage of this spike in action.

When my buddy Dakota contacted me and told me about a river smallie bite, I was there. We arrived and immediately saw fish feeding near the surface. This called for a topwater presentation. After moving to a few spots and a walk across a very sketchy railroad bridge, we found a decent bite. A windblown bank and some shade held a few fish and it didn't take long for a good old Smalljaw smackdown. Although numbers of fish weren't great, average size was good it's always an incredible sight to see a topwater bait get destroyed by a bass. If you've never fished topwater try it, because it is the most exciting way to catch fish.

Like something out of a scene from jaws, the brown back of a smallmouth can be seen just under the waters surface as it moves in for the kill. It isn't a bite as if the fish is grabbing food, it's more like the fish is attacking the bait out of anger. Hookset, fish on, and the drag screams like you hooked into a spaceship just launched into orbit.

What was most impressive to me was that as I fought the fish it was as if it knew exactly what to do to throw the bait. Multiple jumps and headshakes shook one of the treble hooks loose. As I got em near the bank it made a hard run towards the only piece of wood cover in the area. Tangled in sticks and logs, I waited until he decided to swim back toward open water and guided him away from the snag. We landed the fish (which on a steep, muddy rock bank is very much a two man job) and snapped a few pics. Back he went for the next lucky angler to have a chance at.

We fished til dark and caught only a few others, but every fish caught is special in its own way. River smallmouth are are some of the most fun and hardest fighting fish you'll ever encounter. They take as long as 10 years to reach a decent size, and as such should be treated with respect. Catch, photograph and release so the next guy can enjoy them just like you did.

There are tons of creeks and rivers in Ohio and most of them hold at least a few decent bass. Do some research, put in the leg work and you too can experience the fun of a good summertime topwater bite.
