What a difference a few weeks make … the Polycrub has exploded and I love it. We’ll soon be harvesting fresh strawberries, spinach, sugar snap peas and even have some ginger poking up through the soil. The beetroot is flourishing and the cauliflowers look fantastic too … I’m just so happy. 😃
The whole thing looks and feels like a literal jungle and it’s one of my favourite places to sit and relax … 😌

Ada Combs plays Banjo and sings for the boys on her porch in 1959 Whitesburg, Kentucky, US.
Ada Combs was born in 1905 and grew up on Bear Branch of Poll's Creek in Leslie County. She tells about her windowless one-room school and of wading through the creek to reach it. She recalls farm chores and neighborhood activities such as stir-offs, bean-stringings, and gatherings to play music. She picked duck and goose feathers, made soap, and helped her aunt make maple sugar. Her family pickled beans, made sauerkraut, and sulfured apples as well. Combs especially remembers her grandmother's first cookstove because prior to that time cakes and pies were not made in her home. Combs recalls the flu epidemic of 1918 and comments upon herb doctors and "granny women." She indicates that she was twenty-one when she first visited Hyden. Combs married and left Leslie County before the advent of the FNS (Food Nutrition Service)

A few years back I spent a January working on this smallholding in Wales and I'm still friends with the owner on Facebook so I occasionally see posts from her dickhead husband (one of the reasons I left) and they're always shit like
Their farm is a horse stud with 10 horses and a couple of other hobby animals. They produce maybe 6 pigs a year and some lamb. No vegetables. While I was there eggs from their chickens went uneaten because they had like 25 chickens but didn't want to eat eggs every day and didn't have a proper hook up for giving/selling them as everyone else in the smallholder neighbourhood also had chickens

Organic Farming | Climate Change | Bharatvarsh Nature Farms
Effects of climate change on farming
Farmers have been adapting to the conditions imposed on them by their region’s climate since the inception of agriculture. Recent human-induced climate changes like Extreme heat, floods, droughts, hail and windstorms, are pushing them further to the corner. On top of that there are changes in weed species and distribution, pest and disease pressures, in addition to potentially depleted soils and increased pest pressure. Climate change affects farming in several ways by bringing the change in
average temperatures
rainfall
climate extremes (heat waves)
pests and diseases
atmospheric carbon dioxide and ground-level ozone concentrations
the nutritional quality of some foods.
Impact of climate change on smallholder farmers
The impact of climate change is devastating for smallholder farmers. With rising global temperatures, rainfall has become more erratic, with longer dry spells (droughts) and shorter periods of more intense rainfall (floods). The rising carbon dioxide levels also bring down crops’ nutritive value.
Unpredictable rainfall patterns mean crops have less time to grow, producing less. Farmers resort to higher use of fertilizer and water to compensate, degrading the soil quality and lowering groundwater levels while spending much more to grow the same amount or less on the same acreage. This directly impacts overall productivity and there is no surety whether a crop planted by a farmer month in advance will hit the market during a shortage or a glut.
The climate crisis is forcing a rise in input costs to the point where farming is no longer profitable for many smallholder farmers.
How can farmers adapt to climate change?
Climate change poses a real threat to farmers around the world. Agriculture depends on good weather, including high and low temperatures, rainfall, wind intensity and many other variables. Only the sustainable agriculture practices can help increase the resilience of the agricultural system to the climate change impact:
Diversifying crop rotations
Integrating livestock with crop production systems
Improving soil quality
Minimizing off-farm flows of nutrients and pesticides
Implementing more efficient irrigation practices.
Agricultural adaptation examples:
Several adaptation strategies, such as crop and livestock mix shifts, altered planting/harvesting dates, altered livestock rates, and increased pesticide use, have been implemented by farmers mostly acting in their own best interests. Some other examples include proactive measures such as crop and livelihood diversification, seasonal climate forecasting, community-based disaster risk reduction, famine early warning systems, insurance, water, storage, additional irritation and so on.

Getting ready to light our fire.
We discovered this ‘Kindling Cracker’ a few years ago, and it’s been a real blessing. So simple and easy that everyone in our family can use it.
We’ve fastened ours to a log, then all you need is a 3 to 4lb stoning hammer to split the wood. With lots of animals and kids running around, for us it was a much safer option than using an axe.
I’d highly recommend it … 👍😃

Also where and when. The Middle Ages covers a thousand years and all of Europe. Fifth century Finland is very different from 14th century Spain.
Also, is it "if born there" (in which case probably not, I got into this world through a cesarian) or "if dropped there as you are now, with a little bit of money and period appropriate clothes and gear" (in which case maybe, for a while - I have no medical issues requiring on-going intervention - but as a stranger who doesn't know the local language and customs, and no credentials or connections, it would be anyone's guess how long).
#speaking as someone who knows some crafts and how to work on a smallholding and how to use some weapons the likely answer is “probably not”#what would save me would be the compassion of people#and finding a society that would take me in and support me while I'm getting adjusted and integrated
