Storytime

Once upon a time I was a kindergartener, there was some require eye exam at school and so I was to read the line of letters. The first two were easy, but the next one was a ‘b’ or a ‘d’ (maybe even a ‘p’). I’m fairly certain I said, I can’t tell if it is a ‘b’ or a ‘d’ (but you know I was a kindergartener and now I’m an adult, so who knows how accurate that memory is). Instead of realizing I had some level of dyslexia, they decided I needed glasses! 

I never wore those glasses because it didn’t make my vision any better. For whatever reason I went undiagnosed with dyslexia, even though I remember my mother sitting me down and trying to teach be the difference between ‘b’ and ‘d’. B faces the same direction when it is capital and lower case. Since for me, being dyslexic is seeing the letter from all directions, at that point I learned to hold the letter still and found a ‘house’-side and a ‘stage’-side.

It wasn’t until high school when people were joking about slydexia that I realized I probably was dislexic a little bit (helps when sometimes trying to say ‘slydexia’ makes you say ‘dyslexia’). Only self-diagnosed with dyslexia, but it makes me feel less bad about being a slow reader. I find that I switch numbers, letters, and words around. I also take time in understanding diagrams because sometimes my all-direction view is inaccurate from an incomplete understanding of the picture. I managed to get a graduate degree without any extra help or extended time frames...makes me wonder if I would have gotten better grades if I did...makes me wonder if I’m underestimating my intelligence because of lower grades...
