Hello there once again! @thewriterscoffee here
I was wondering if anyone had any advice for balancing the characters with the plot?
I know that characters are probably the most crucial aspect of a story and must not be overshadowed by the plot but how could one deal with the internal conflict of a character-especially if it deals with wild thoughts and mental obstacles, that are just as intense as the external conflict if not more so,-and artfully balance it with the external plot?
Especially for genres such as high fantasy where the plot and world building are crucial to the story and can very often take away from the character's internal conflict because of the more magical or dangerous stakes?

Especially for genres such as high fantasy where the plot and world building are crucial to the story and can very often take away from the character's internal conflict because of the more magical or dangerous stakes?
Hello @thewriterscoffee I literally have no idea how old this ask is because I've honestly not been able to drag my moldering corpse onto the internet for months. Life is a real pain in the ass sometimes, you know.
However, I do have some general advice for this.
This is just a matter of figuring it out as you go. Everyone balances the plot and characters differently especially in those genres that you're referencing because they have different goals. In plot-driven high fantasy the characters exist less to be real people and more to be ideas that support the central plot. Some effort might be made to make them more than an archetype or a symbol/stand in for an idea but also many times there just isn't any effort put in at all.
But you asked specifically about how to balance characters with plot so lets focus on that:
Type your characters flaws and goals to your plot. Say you need Grigori the Finest to overcome the Curse of a Thousand Years and restore peace and quiet to the Kingdom of Slumbertime. Grigori's emotional need cannot be to break the curse directly, but it needs to be something thematically similar and/or adjacent so that when he accomplishes the plot goal (Unleashing the Great Lullaby of Poppins the Merry) he is also fulfilling his emotional need and all of us reading get that big emotional pay off. So maybe Grigori thinks what he wants is to get everyone to take a nap so Master and Mistress Grouch will let him date their daughter Grouchella who he has been longing for since he first set foot in the kingdom. That gets him on the path to fulfill your plot. But along the way you're going to reveal that emotionally he just wants to be seen as something more than a stunningly beautiful man who clearly has nothing but naughty intentions on his mind toward women. He's tired of being this hot all the time, ok and he's not giving you a sexy look that's literally just his face. You also reveal that in order to accomplish his main goal (the Great lullaby) he is going to have to give up something. I mean his good looks here seems to be an obvious thing. But he stumbles along that path because he wants to be seen AS HE IS not to disfigure himself. This will somehow echo with how the curse got started in the first place? everyone's shallow? vain? arrogant? proud? naturally he's going to have a buddy or a love interest that is going to be there at the last minute to tell him that he is seen, valued, loved idk whatever he needs to hear in order to fling open the doors to the Music Room of Olde and wind the Music Box of Impressive Name.
Well great this sounds impossible but you wrote it like it's so obvious. Thanks for that, geez
Practically speaking you are either going to have to choose working on your plot or your character first. I always start with a character but that doesn't mean its always the best way to do it. High Fantasy is very much driven by a theme/message/plot. So start with the general emotion/feeling/mood/message/theme (whichever one you know at the start) and create someone that is as opposite of that as you can manage while still getting them to walk the path you need them to go. Don't be afraid to make them a little more opposite than you think you can handle at first.
Take your oppositional duckling and without thinking about why he is the way he is, just try to figure out how to get him to set foot on the path. Don't come up with ways for the plot to force him, don't just put him there and hope for the best, think what trigger does he need to get involved. Even if its not happily or willingly what would make him participate in your plot.
First step accomplished, you start building him from that moment. If he has to be promised a fat sack of gold, why does he need it? Why does he want it? If he has to be offered a pretty girl's hand in marriage, why is that? If you had to hogtie him and throw him in the back of a caravan of travelling bards, why did he not immediately kill them all upon escape?
As a general rule if you're writing something and you have a character doing a pivotal or important thing simply because you need them to do it for the plot to move forward you're writing to the plot and not the character. That's neither good or bad, it's just accomplishing a different goal.
If you're writing to plot, having your character hit the plot milestones because the plot said so makes sense and you have no issues
If you're writing to character, you need to hit the breaks and take the time to sit and really work out how and/or why the character would do this thing you need to do. It might be you've got a subplot that needs developing or that you need to tweak the plot a bit so that your character can follow it in their own way.
I hope that helps!

🌙📱💤 Why Blue Light is Not Good for Sleeping 💤📱🌙 🌟 Hey there, sleep seekers! Let's dive into the captivating world of blue light and its impact on our precious slumber. 😴✨ 🔹 Blue light, emitted by electronic devices and energy-efficient lighting, has become a pervasive part of our modern lifestyle. However, its effect on our sleep patterns is worth pondering. 😯🔵💡 🔹 When we expose ourselves to blue light, especially during the evening or nighttime hours, it can disrupt our natural circadian rhythm, the internal clock that regulates our sleep-wake cycle. 🌌⏰ 🔹 The reason behind this lies in the wavelengths of blue light, which suppress the production of melatonin—a hormone that helps us fall asleep. So, when we're scrolling through our smartphones or tablets before bedtime, we're unknowingly inhibiting the release of this sleepy hormone. 😱🚫😴 🔹 The consequences? Difficulty falling asleep, reduced sleep quality, and feeling groggy and unrested the next day. 😫😴⏰ 🔹 But fret not, sleep enthusiasts! There are ways to counteract the effects of blue light and promote a better night's rest. 🌙✨ ✅ One option is to limit your exposure to blue light in the evenings. Try switching off electronic devices an hour or two before bed and engage in relaxing activities like reading a book, practicing mindfulness, or enjoying a warm bath. 📚🧘🛀 ✅ Another helpful tool is blue light filters or special glasses designed to block out blue light. These can be a game-changer in protecting your eyes and regulating your sleep patterns. 😎🕶️ ✅ Creating a sleep-friendly environment is crucial. Consider using blackout curtains, ensuring a comfortable temperature, and using dim, warm-colored lighting in your bedroom. 🌒🌡️💡 🔑 Remember, dear dreamers, quality sleep is essential for our overall well-being. Let's prioritize our rest by being mindful of our blue light exposure and adopting healthier sleep habits. 💤💪 💤💭💤 #SleepWell #BlueLightAwareness #PrioritizeRest #SleepMatters #HealthySleepHabits #GoodNightSleepTight #SleepAwareness #QualitySleepMatters #BedtimeRoutine #SlumberTime #DreamBig 💤💭💤

Best Intentions
Thanks @flashfictionfridayofficial for running the suggest a prompt event! I’m honored that enough people liked my suggestion to vote it through. Wrote my first draft of this and then got the news that a family dog from back home would have to be put to sleep. Needless to say, I didn’t do much beyond a quick edit, so this might not be quite my usual fare. Can’t wait to read what everyone else writes later this week when I’m feeling up for it. And if you have a pet, please give them some lovin’ on my behalf. ❤️

He was a wish-granting spirit living in an antique clock that would invariably change hands on the tenth of every month. Like his fellow spirits, he had his own thoughts on how wishes should be granted. Some felt it was their duty to fulfill the dreams and whims of the one that fate had assigned to them. Others thought that the humans were wretched, selfish beings and sought to poison their desires until either their selfishness or its vessel failed to exist. Jakat liked to think of himself as the former type, but he had his doubts.
Every action of his was full of good intent. But he was clumsy with his execution. “I want to be rich,” said one of the clock’s owners. The next day, he awoke to his three cats lapping at him uncontrollably. Stepping outside doomed him to be followed by stray dogs, pecked at by pigeons, and harried by rats.
“I wanted to be financially rich, not rich in smell and favor!” he yelled on the ninth, as he took the clock off the wall to throw away in the next day’s trash.
Spirits were allowed to grant any number of wishes they wanted. Jakat only allowed one for this very reason.
“I thought long and hard about it,” one of his clients had confided in him. “I want to find true love,” He nodded and wove an opportunity for them in the quilt of fate. His client received in the mail the next day a last-minute invitation to a distant friend’s wedding. They had attended, met who they thought would be the love of their life, and gladly sold the clock to someone else. A sign of goodwill. Last Jakat heard, though, his ex-client was going through a nasty divorce and custody battle. The distant friend and her wife, however, are still going strong and are soon going to be mothers for the first time. “Find” and “have” were two very different things, Jakat was sad to learn.
This most recent one was one of the worst. “I want to be famous” was uttered by a bubbly twenty-something with an optimistic outlook on life. She could have brought joy as a pop sensation, hope as a political activist, or laughs as a YouTube celebrity and spokesperson. But instead, she was victim number three of the Slumbertime Strangler. Her bruised-covered neck and glassy stare would haunt him, maybe for the rest of his existence.
He stared at his reflection in the mirror that hung within his dwelling. His eyes were bloodshot. The bags under his eyes sagged almost comically low. His hair and beard were a tangled mess. This wasn’t like the time a man had asked for a full head of hair and woke up the next morning looking like Cousin Itt. Someone was dead.
“I wish I was better at my job,” he said. That’s when the clock struck midnight. It was the tenth of December.
“Wake up,” said an unfamiliar voice. “No sleeping on the job.”
He started, realizing he was no longer in the clockwork bed he had made for himself and instead was seated at a desk. It was hot, almost unbearably so. He looked up at the owner of the voice and found a stereotypical beefcake demon with horns.
“It’s time to get to work. There’s lots of souls to torture.”
“Torture,” he said. “I don’t do that.”
“Funny,” the demon said. “That’s all we demons do. They beg and wish for mercy, and we give them anything but.”

it’s the last day of my leave (well i have until tmr actually, but i’m thinking of cancelling it). i’ve been away from office for about 9 days now.
all i’ve done is eat, sleep, and read, mostly. i haven’t spent a week resting properly at home before, so it’s what i did this time. it was nice. when i went on leave previously, i was always packing for my flight out of singapore the next day.
i got up at 1pm+ today. ate at about 2pm-3pm, helped to wash up thereafter. took a nap from 7pm-9pm.
sleep is delicious. i used to think slumbertime was for weaklings or people who had nothing going on in their lives. i stand by that, because sleep is not a hobby. there’s nothing funny or cute about people who introduce themselves by saying that they like to sleep in their spare time. everybody and their great grandmother and their pet dog, russell, fucking sleeps.
since lexapro, though, i want nothing more but sleep. i dream about sleep while at work. as i’m stressing over my next move at the office — is it good to send this email, how do i manage so-and-so colleague; my bones are crystallizing under the A/C turned too low; i’m on the verge of flashbanged from prolonged exposure to the fluorescent lights on the ceiling — i’m lusting over the image of my bed.
