September Seasonal Produce Guide
Late Summer and Early fall leads to heavy loads at the farmers market and thus very long lists in this Seasonal Produce Guide for September. Bear with me because there are so many good recipes to enjoy right now! Fruit is still making a good appearance as are all of the vegetables and you can’t forget the big, busty, ripe tomatoes right now! This time of year I love making a big batch of marinara to store up for the winter. I also serve this One-Pan Farro with Tomatoes, Sausage, and Kale frequently for a quick dinner and a big bowl of apples once again graces our kitchen island.
Though I’ve given you plenty of ideas below for recipes, I also wanted to add a few end of harvest ideas for you. Just pick one of the ingredients listed above and find a way to store it up for a mid-winter celebration. This year try shucking a lot of corn to freeze for winter meals, or make your own jam (this maple vanilla apricot jam is a little taste of heaven), can some peaches in this honey simple syrup (one of my favorite things to enjoy mid winter), or try your hand at pickling – this strawberry pickled radish recipe is fun and I always make at least one batch of these pickled vegetables every year.

This Classic American Goulash and my Strawberry Cream Cake are the recipes that were the most popular last month over on the blog. Have you tried them??? This American Goulash has Beef, tomatoes, macaroni and spices simmered together all in one pot! Goulash is one of my favorite old fashioned meals. My Strawberry cake starts with a baked french vanilla cake, infused with strawberry gelatin, topped with a creamy filling and finished off with a fresh strawberry glaze. This cake is definitely a show stopper for any holiday occasion.

A couple weeks back, I came across this Chocolate Cream Pie and this Blueberry Ambrosia Salad while scrolling through my Face book feed. This Chocolate Cream Pie has a graham cracker crust, scratch chocolate pudding and topped with whipped cream and mini chocolate chips. I can't wait to try this recipe. I recently tried my hand at crocheting my first baby blanket. Just before Christmas my first grand child was born and I'm over the moon in love with her. I thought it was only fitting to make her a soft baby blanket with my favorite Bernat Blanket Yarn. When it comes to crocheting, I always try to keep it simple. Mainly because I'm pretty much still a beginner myself. I chose vintage white for the main color and pitter patter for the accent color (border). This blanket only took two evenings to crochet and was really simple once you got started. If you're looking for a simple fluffy blanket to crochet, I think this is the one. 16 Thanksgiving Vegetable Side Dishes You’ll Love
If you’re in charge of making a vegetable side dish for Thanksgiving this year, here are some of my tried-and-true favorite recipes to choose from. They’re always a hit with my family, and as an added bonus, all of them are gluten-free! (Many are dairy-free, too.)
When it comes to holidays, I’m all for splurging on the “real thing,” when it’s called for, but in many cases, I think the recipes below taste BETTER than the versions my family used to make! I hope you’ll think so, too.
1. My Favorite Holiday Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette
This is my go-to salad to bring to holiday gatherings, because it’s always such a hit! Expect everyone to ask you for the Apple Cider Dressing recipe. If you have guests who don’t love blue cheese, leave it in a bowl on the side so people can add it themselves!
2. Clean Green Bean Casserole
This green bean casserole is entirely vegetable-based, made with a “cream sauce” using cooked parsnips. It’s surprisingly creamy and comforting, and it’s healthy enough to be enjoyed year-round.
3. Wild Rice & Mushroom Stuffing
This easy stuffing is loaded with vegetables, and is naturally gluten-free. Wild rice has more protein than other varieties of rice, making this side dish extra hearty and filling, too!
4. Cauliflower “Mashed Potatoes”
This creamy side dish reminds me of mashed potatoes, but when you use cauliflower it’s lower in carbohydrates with a satisfying texture that you can smother with gravy. I make mine dairy-free, but you can load them up however you like! Try them on the stove top or in a slow cooker.
5. Gluten-free & Vegan Gravy
It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving in my house without a really good gravy you want to pour over everything. This gluten-free gravy happens to be entirely vegetable-based, and is thickened without using a flour or starch. Everyone loves it!
6. Gluten-Free & Vegan Skillet “Cornbread”
This Cornbread tastes remarkably similar to the Jiffy boxed mix my mom used to make, but it’s not even made with corn! Instead, it uses millet and a sneaky veggie to make a fluffy, gluten-free skillet bread.
7. Maple Glazed Sweet Potatoes
For a low-effort sweet potato dish, try these naturally-sweetened sweet potatoes! I love their caramelized flavor more than a traditional sweet potato casserole, and it’s dairy-free and vegan.
8. Gluten-Free Corn Casserole
If you grew up eating the classic corn casserole made with Jiffy cornbread mix and canned creamed corn, this recipe is for you! It reminds me of the original version my mom used to make, but it’s naturally gluten-free and dairy-free.
9. Vegan Creamed Spinach
This creamed spinach recipe is made with a dairy-free cashew cream sauce that I’m pretty sure I would enjoy over any vegetable! If you don’t love spinach, try it over sauteed kale, instead.
10. Cheesy Spaghetti Squash Casserole
This casserole reminds me of the cheesy hash brown casserole my mom used to make. Instead of potatoes, this one is packed with lower-carb spaghetti squash “noodles” and uses plain yogurt instead of a can of creamed soup.
11. Brussels Sprouts Salad
Instead of using typical salad greens, try shaved brussels sprouts for your holiday salad. This one is tossed in a red wine vinaigrette and has festive toppings like dried cranberries and toasted hazelnuts.
12. Instant Pot Curried Butternut Squash Soup
This creamy soup is naturally dairy-free, getting its silky texture from the pureed squash and a touch of coconut milk. When you add some tart cranberries and crunch pumpkin seeds on top, it looks extra-festive and has a nice contrast of textures and flavors.
13. Wild Rice & Kale Salad

This hearty salad is a nice change from wimpy side salads, and the process is as hands-off as possible when you make the rice portion in the Instant Pot! Get the recipe from my friend Kathryne at Cookie + Kate.
