Vallabhesa Karavalamba Dasakam
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
"Vallabha Ganapathi is that form of Ganapathi Vallabha Ganapathi is a rare form of Ganapathi who has eleven arms and is believed to be the protector of the universe. There are a few temples dedicated to this form of Ganapathi ( for example Mambalam, Madras) and one of them is in Suva, Fiji Islands and another in New york . I know of only three Karavalamvha stotras , one dedicated to Lord Subramanya , one to Lord Lakshmi Narasimha and the other dedicated to Lord Venkatesa.
.The stotram was taught by late Smt. Sarada, the daughter of Jailor & Astrologer Ganapathy Iyer, Irinjalakuda to her son Ganesan. The first letters of the slokas of this stotram combine to form "Om Sri Gam Ganapathaye Nama and after long search I have confirmed that it is neither available in the web nor in any of the books of published Ganesa stotras . I have translated the stotra after correcting the minor mistakes which had crept in over years . I am dedicating this stotra to the memory of Smt Sarada , the great devotee of Vallabha Ganapathi."
Dhyanam
Bheeja pooragadekshukarmukarujaa chakrabja pasthpala,
Vrehygraswavishana rathna kalasa prodhyuth karamboruha,
Dhyoyo vallabhaya cha padmakarayaslishto jwalath bhooshaya,
Viswothpathi vinasa samsthithikaro vigno visishtarthadha.
It is necessary to meditate on that God who prevents bottlenecks,
Who holds in his eleven hands things like lemon, mace ,
Bow, sugarcane, spear ,holy wheel, lotus flower, rope,
The black bel flower, the paddy bunch, his own tusk and pot of gems,
Who is being embraced by his wife who is well ornamented,
And having in her hand a lotus flower,
Who does the creation, upkeep and destruction of the universe,
And who blesses all with the special wealth.
OM GANAPAHAYE NAMAH:
1.Om angri Padma mukurantha kulamrutham they Nithyam bhjanthi Divyath Sura sidha sanga Jnathawamrutham Gana Sastha thakam Bhajami Sreevallabhesa Mama Dehi Karavalambam

2.Shree Mathausunam Adhuna Sararanam Prapadhye Daridra Dukhasamanam Kurume Ganesa Math sankatam Cha Sakalam Hara Vigna Raja Sreevallabhesa Mama Dehi Karavalambam
At this time I surrender to the son of the God mother,
And pray Ganesa to remove the sorrow of poverty ,
And pray the lord of stoppages to remove all my sorrows.
And so Oh Lord of Vallabha , give me the support of your hand.

By offering the nectar like modhakas to please you,
I who am drowned and dangling in the sea of sin would get your help,
To get cloths , ornaments , wealth and vehicles,
And so Oh Lord of Vallabha , give me the support of your hand.

05.01.2021 - The Jayanthi of Mahan Sri Seshadri Swamigal.
Sri Seshadri Swamigal, well known as the "Saint with a golden hand", is one of the greatest Indian saints who lived in Thiruvannamalai. He is revered as a religious guru by many people throughout the world. Of the word 'Seshadri' - 'Sesha' means 'remainder', that is the 'sat' which remains after having rejected everything else as 'not existing'; 'Adri' means 'mountain', that is bigger than the biggest - all-pervading. Thus the name Seshadri is equivalent to 'Parabrahman' - the all-pervading and self-illuminating 'sat'. Sri Vidya Cult There is a part in South India called Thondai Mandalam with its capital of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. In ancient times at Kanchipuram Sri Adi Sankara Acharya established the cult of Sri Vidya, for the welfare of the world. In this connection he went to Central India and brought about thirty families of Devi bhaktas to Kanchipuram. These families were called Kamakoti Vamsa and spread the Sri Vidya cult throughout India. Everyone of the Kamakoti family was like a rishi. Kamakoti Sastri In 1790, Kamakoti Sastri was born into one of these families. Even though he had a daughter he also adopted one of his brother's (Chidambaram) daughters, a girl named Maragatham. At the appropriate time, Kamakoti Sastri started to search for a husband for this beautiful, learned girl and selected Varadarajar, one of his own students. Although the couple had good health and abundant wealth they were sad as they were childless. Finally, one day, heeding the prayers of this pious family, the Goddess Sri Kamakshi gave a dream to the daughter's adoptive father, Kamakoti Sastrigal. In due course, on January 22, 1870 a child was born. People around said the radiant child was an ornament of Sri Kamakshi Devi - a pet child of the Goddess and born because of the parents’ tapas. Birth Even from his earliest years the child Seshadri would perform pujas, sing prayers with concentrated devotion, sit in meditation and go off into spontaneous trances. He was neither interested in games nor displayed negative characteristics. Everyone regarded the boy as a Divine child. It was about this time an incident occurred that thereafter gave Seshadri his nickname, ‘Golden Hand'. One day four year old Seshadri and his mother stopped at a shop full of bronze castings of the Gods. While at the shop the young lad picked up a statue of Krishna and asked his mother to buy it so he could perform Krishna puja. The trader, thinking that the radiant child himself resembled the Lord Krishna, gave the idol and refused payment. The next day the trader proclaimed the boy to be most lucky as the whole consignment of 1,000 statues (because of the young boy's touch), had been sold in one day. News of the incident spread quickly through the town and from that moment on the young boy was known as, 'The one with the golden hand'. This gave him the name "Thanga Kai" (golden hand). Upanayanam In his fifth year young Seshadri was initiated at an auspicious ceremony attended by many scholars and on the same day started to attend Patashalas in Kanchi. Quickly he showed an almost superhuman intellect and memory and exhibited extraordinary debating skills. In this way years went by until the time Sri Seshadri reached his fourteenth year and his father Sri Varadarajar died unexpectedly. Kamakoti Sastrigal arrived to pacify the bereaved family and took them to live at Vazhur. It was there that Swamiji completed his education and mastered various texts in Sanskrit and Tamil – the whole Vedanta with three primary texts – Gita, Upanishads and Brahma Sutras, besides Vedas, Nyaya and Vyakarana. He had also mastered music and astrology. Marriage With his education now complete, Seshadri's mother, the pious widow Maragatham tried to arrange a marriage between her 17 year old son and the daughter of a relative, but when it was discovered (by examining Seshadri's horoscope) that he was destined to become a sanyasi and yogi, the marriage plans were swiftly cancelled. His mother, becoming more self-absorbed started to lose interest in worldly affairs and became increasingly weak - ignoring food and medical treatment. One day she called her son to her and predicted her death for the next day, and arranged for him to attend. The following day at her bed, she called her child to her and repeated a sloka [1] from Adi Sankara's Bhaja Govindam then together they sang the song 'Ambasive' after which keeping her hand on his chest she called out, 'Arunachala! [2] Arunachala! Arunachala!' and laid herself on his lap and died. Induction into Devi Worship After both his parents had died, Seshadri's uncle (who was childless) gladly took charge of Seshadri and the younger brother Narasimha Josiar. In his room Seshadri did numerous pujas and continuous japa to pictures of Sri Kamakshi, Lord Ram and to one of his own drawings of Arunachala Hill. He would lock himself up in his room at five in the morning and refuse to come out before noon. He regularly fasted and could often be heard shouting Arunachala Shonadrinatha or reciting Vedic hymns late at night. His uncle and aunt were frightened by his strange worship and begged him to stop. But Seshadri would not listen. Balaji Swamigal and Induction into Sanyashram At the age of 19, he met Sri Balaji Swamigal, a wandering saint from North India, who gave Seshadri sanyas and instructed him in the Mahavakyas. This was the only guru and formal diksha Seshadri is known to have had. Shortly after Seshadri started to travel to various spots in Tamil Nadu eventually ending up at Thiruvannamalai. He arrived at Arunachala at the age of 19 in Thiruvannamalai When he first arrived at Arunachala his uncle and brother Narasimha Josiar came to see him. Both were overwhelmed with grief on seeing him in rags with matted hair and a thin dirty body. They entreated him to return home immediately, but Swamiji refused to leave. Appearance Swamiji was handsome of medium height and fair countenance. His hair hung in short ringlets to the nape of his neck. His voice was soft and his smile was as sweet and sunny as a child. His body would not be at rest for a moment. Even, when sitting he would catch something, put it down, lift it and then repeat it all over again a hundred times. He walked fast and those following had to run to keep up with him. No sound emanated from his walking or running, it was as if his body was light like a ball. He would seldom bathe, but occasionally pour a pint of oil on himself and roam in the streets with oil still glistening on his head. If he allowed himself to be shaved he would often stop it abruptly, with half of his face or head unshaved and appear in public with equanimity and total disregard for public opinion. He discarded rules and observances of caste, sanctity, prudence and decency but always avoided animal food and intoxicants. Conduct Seshadri Swamigal moved about in Tiruvannamalai for forty years, an ascetic with a total disregard for either name or form. He had no home, dependents, property or any fixed habit or system. He would often conduct himself like a mad man and roam around in the heat of the day and stare up at the hot midday sun and, at night, rest in some nook or deserted hall. He would be delighted when it rained and play in the streams on the street, sit in the water and only go indoors when the rain had stopped. His acts were dramatic and deeply impressive. He would avoid rich food from wealthy persons but beg for cold gruel at a poor man's house. Sometimes he would take no food at all and on other occasions consume enough for ten people. He would eat and drink like one swallowing medicine or one being forcibly fed. Although he did not accept money he would sometimes receive expensive clothes but immediately transfer them to a poor person or tear the clothes into pieces and garland the tail and horns of a calf. If he was given plain new clothes, within a couple of hours, they would reach the state of his original clothes. He wore only a dhoti which would cover his toes and another piece of cloth swathed over his back and shoulders. He would squat anywhere regardless whether it was slush, dirt or refuse. When sitting, it was always in his favourite swastika asana. Swamigal utilised a strange manner of speech to ward off crowds building up around him. He would go on speaking very fast, without any respite and with no end or meaning. Sometimes if someone spoke to him, he would reply in Sanskrit, not caring if he was understood or not. He was a tapasvi of a very high order. One result of the mantras and sadhanas he practiced from his earliest years was the development of various siddhis and psychic powers. He could tell about the past and the future and read minds with ease. With this power, he fulfilled the desires of people by showing visions they wanted to see, both in dreams and while being awake. His miraculous touch is said to have cured many of those who came to him with devotion. Often when people saw him in the streets they would prostrate before him and he would get near to enable them to touch his feet. But, he would never allow bad characters to touch his feet. He would run away and if they forced themselves on him, he would abuse them or even pelt them with stones. Seeing this, many people did not go near him. But when he knew about the good qualities of a person, he would himself catch their hands and play. He would joke and run with young children. Swamigal's interaction with the world was very strange. A person couldn't take advantage of previous proximity—every moment was a new moment. People loved him, but some fearing they might be beaten, were frightened to come close. Generally, he would not call people by name, ask them how they were doing and suggest they come or question why a person did not come. He would neither talk sarcastically nor show intimacy on account of a past connection. He loved music, delighting his devotees with songs. If one asked, he would break forth into melodious song often drumming rhythms on nearby surfaces. Sometimes he would place his hands on his hips and dance. He was often taken to be a lunatic and at times purposely simulated madness. It was difficult to explain his general behaviour and impossible to account for the course of his conduct. He was always original and free, an ascetic who maintained a thorough control of his mind and senses up to the end of his life. He was always playing pranks. Suddenly he would laugh without stopping and those who witnessed his fun would be reduced to hilarity. Sri Seshadri blessed his devotees and helped cure their illnesses with his wonderful touch. While roaming the streets of Thiruvannamalai, he would sometimes enter a shop and dump the cash from a cashbox or throw the articles from the shops. The shops he entered used to do good business on that day and so shop keepers would eagerly await his arrival. To this day, the shops in Thiruvannamalai have his photos as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Teachings Sri Seshadri Swamigal had deep devotion to God especially in the form of the Goddess Kamakshi, Lord Ram and Arunachala. Sri Seshadri was a great worshipper of Shakti. In the practice of concentration (for days in his boyhood at Tindivanam and at Thiruvannamalai), he sat steeped in samadhi, oblivious of his body. Seshadri Swamigal would meditate at Draupadi Amman Koil and Easanyan Mutt and in the corridor surrounding the Inner Sanctorum at the Durgai Amman Temple and he would also do tapas at Kambathu Ilayanar, Pathala Lingam and Arunachala Yogiswarar Mandapam. He did not do tapas on the top of the Mountain and instead would go onto the slopes of Arunachala to pray. Glory of Arunachala He often talked about the unique aspects of the Arunachala kshetra. He would say: 'This is the place where Swamy and Ambal invite all and confer liberation', and 'Lord Krishna leaving aside his sudarshana chakra (wheel) is playing on his flute. On hearing it Lord Siva who is inside the mountain comes out and dances' Throughout his life and teachings Sri Seshadri continuously emphasised the glory of Arunachala: 'This is Siva Lingam. It is enough to worship this. One can become spiritually enlightened and attain liberation'. And illustrating the similarity of the Annamalaiyar-Unnamalai Temple to Arunachala he said to those wasting their time discussing worldly affairs and neglecting God: 'He spreads his shop in the morning. Closes it at night. He does not see Lord Arunachaleswara. What is the use? Visit the temple. Visit the temple. Visit the temple'. He was ever emphasising the inestimable value of giripradakshina instructing: 'One should pray to Lord Arunachaleswara all the time. In particular perambulation of the hills should be done on Tuesdays. Deep devotion will arise'. Social Service He loved service and by his own example showed it as a noble ideal to live up to. He was regarded with great respect and he was thought to be a sage People would say, 'He is a talking God,' 'A divine incarnation, a great yogi, a great siddha'. Seshadri Swamigal and Ramana Maharshi Seshadri Swamigal and Ramana Maharshi (Seshadri actually arrived at Arunachala six years earlier than Ramana) were contemporaries. When Ramana Maharshi came to Tiruvannamalai seven years after Seshadri Swamigal's arrival, Seshadri was immediately aware of the young swami's state of Self-abidance and he felt a motherly love for him. Sri Ramana spent his time then immersed in the bliss of the Self in the thousand-pillared hall in the front portion of the Arunachaleswara Temple. Urchins, not understanding his state, pelted him with stones. Sri Seshadri tried to protect the young swami who seemed quite unaware of his body and surroundings, but the urchins continued their harassment. To avoid this unwanted attention, Sri Ramana moved into the Patalalingam, an underground vault in the temple. He remained there, in deep meditation, for many days, oblivious to the ants, vermin, and mosquitoes who were feasting on him. Sri Seshadri found him there and asked his (Sri Seshadri's) devotee Venkatachala Mudaliar to lift "his child" out. He cleansed Ramana's blood-oozing wounds and revealed Ramana as a [saint] to the world. Locals used to call Sri Seshadri, Mother Parvathi and Sri Ramana, Skanda (Lord Subramanya). Sometimes Sri Seshadri Swamigal, the older by ten years would be called 'elder Seshadri' (anna) and Sri Ramana 'younger Seshadri' (thambi). One time a devotee told Sri Ramana that everyone called Seshadri a mad man. Ramana smilingly replied that there were three mad men in Arunachala. One was Seshadri, the second was Arunachaleswarar and the third was himself. Sri Ramana said of Swamji, 'Sri Seshadri does not allow people to come near him. Here all are coming'. Others would say there were three lingas in Tiruvannamalai: One, Lord Arunachala, another Ramana Maharshi and the third Seshadri Swamigal. Death Having lived at Arunachala continuously for forty years and helping all kinds of people Sri Seshadri decided to finally shed his body. One day in 1928 during the month of Karthigai, he asked a devotee, 'Shall I build a new house and go away?' Meaning, 'I have completed my task, shall I now depart?' At first the devotee thought the question a prank but finally after many days and constant repetition of the question, she answered, that, 'He should construct a new house and practise yoga'. Sri Seshadri accepted Subbalakshmi's words as representative of Parasakthi's approval and satisfied he replied, 'Yes, yes, it shall be done!'. Some days later his devotees, who wanted to photograph him, gave him an oil bath and then bathed, dressed, scented, garlanded and photographed him. Immediately Seshadri caught a fever. For forty days his condition worsened and on the forty-first day he found the strength to visit Arunachaleswara one last time. On returning from the temple he sat down in a puddle of water and refused to change his wet clothes when he got back to the house. Within days, on January 4, 1929, Sri Seshadri Swamigal left his body and Thiruvannamalai was engulfed in sorrow. After preparation his body was brought out in procession which is said to have been so splendid that the entire stock of camphor in the shops of Thiruvannamalai was exhausted and all incoming buses were full and overcrowded. The streets were jammed with devotees and the night seemed like bright day as it was so brilliantly illuminated by the burning camphor. The air was filled with group-singing, devotional songs and the music of instrument players. It was at Agni Theertham that Sri Ramana Maharshi joined the procession. Further on a samadhi was constructed and Sri Swamigal's body interred. That samadhi tomb is now enshrined within the grounds of Sri Seshadri Ashram on Chengam Road, Thiruvannamalai. His body was not cremated but buried, as is the custom in the case of a saint. It is believed that Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi was present at the place silently observing the rituals till it was completed.

What is Jiva & Atman & Samisti Jiva (Cosmic Soul)?
Jiva (also pronounced as jeeva), is the innate or primordial force which inherits this body which tethers both the Physical body (Sthula:shareera) and subtle body (Sukshma:sharera), and wears it like a cloth. It is not bound by kaal (time), meaning it doesn’t age, nor grows old or weak. This jiva makes us recognize one’s own existence in a given time but, is not aware of its true self or its true source. It can be interpreted as a soul, but a jiva is nothing but an agitation or vibration of Brahman. This agitation within Brahman is to create a temporary state of “absence-of-consciousness-of-Brahman”, meaning Brahman (the infinite awareness) within itself creates a momentary agitation to temporarily mask the notion of the supreme consciousness, this temporary absence-of-consciousness-of-Brahman is called the Jiva. Hence, Jiva is attributed to Shakti (agitation) and not to Consciousness, whereas Atman is attributed to Consciousness. This Jiva is unaware of itself and the supreme consciousness, so thinking manifests in it, and consequently the mind manifests as a psychological process. Though in this momentary state the Supreme Infinite consciousness abundance its Infinite state there is no real transformation in Brahman as there are no two entities, one Brahman and other Jiva. This “Psychological Framework” of a Jiva is called the Antakarana. This mind is vague, and imaginative due to the lack of clarity of its true self. This thinking then entertains the five elements and merges with them as a basis to physicality (Prakriti = Shakti) so, respectively results in the manifestation of sense organs. The mind and the sense organs though separate, coincide with each other in a perfect rhythm, as if they are the same. This cosmic Jiva then utters AUM (the pranava) resulting in the manifestation of various objects. This cosmic Jiva now imagines so many objects and oneself in so many ways that all the creation is filled with jivas is multitude of combinations and flavors. This jiva traverses from one body to another and accumulates various tendencies (Vasana) in each life, then takes a new host to shed its karma:phala. The destiny of a jiva is to shed its vasana (inherent habit which constitutes the manas) and realize itself to be the Atman. In many cases, a jiva falsely associates itself to be this body. (Swami Venkatesananda. 1993) A sloka from Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2 of Sankhya Yoga, Sloka 13, in which Gitacharya (Sri Krishna) says:
देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा।
तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति।।
Meaning, this innate jiva that dwells within a physical body, witnesses childhood, youth, old age and death, but also takes up a new host body and continues the same cycle again. Hence, for this jiva there is no death and the wise who realize this have nothing to grieve.
Rishi Vasistha explains the passage of Jiva to Sri Ram in his Yoga as:
“when there is a cessation of the flow of the life-breath (prana), the consciousness of the individual becomes utterly passive. When the life-breath seizes, the body is said to be ‘dead’ or ‘inert’. The life-breath returns to its source-air-and consciousness freed from memory and tendencies remain as the self. That atomic ethereal particle which is possessed of these memories and tendencies is known as the jiva: and it remains there itself in the space where the dead body is. That jiva now abandons its ideas and what it had been seeing till then, and perceives other things as in dreaming or day-dreaming. After a momentary lapse of consciousness, the jiva begins to fancy that it sees another body, another world, and another life-span.” (Swami Venkatesananda. 1993). In this article let’s look into the following questions, What is a jiva’s purpose? How does one reach ‘jiva Brahma:ikya:siddhi’? After attaining Jiva:brahma:ikya:siddhi does the jiva leave the body? Will everyone reach ‘jiva Brahma:ikya:siddhi’? Can one be happy all the time? In order to explore this, let’s learn some core definitions.
Samisti Jeeva (Cosmic Soul)
When this entire creation with all its beings are considered as one single entity with a life force, that drives its existence in maya (illusion), that cumulative life force (in all beings as one) is called Samisti Jeeva. The concept of creation which is Brahma (one of the trinity, not Brahmam), referred as Hiranyagarbha (golden womb) is considered as the Samisti Jeeva or the Cosmic Jiva. The story goes as follows, when Brahma inhered the concept of creation (within the maya), created various worlds and beings with life force (subsets of Samisti Jeeva) which grew without end or demise, this caused the concept of Rudhra to emerge and advised Brahma to replicate the cosmic loop of creation and dissolution at all levels within His creation. To do this a being called Mrityu Devata (Goddess of Death) was born of Him (hence became His daughter) so as to constantly sprout creation (animation of smaller entities) within the broader creation, and then dissolution of that animation back into the source. Hence creation and dissolution became a duet (or a dance) that exists in the smallest aspect of creation to the highest purview. (Sri Garikapati. N.J.V, n.d., p.1470-1490, Swami Venkatesananda. 1993). Full Article on Life, Rebith, Atman, Upadi, Sukshma/Sthula Sharira, Manas, Avasta and more can be found at : https://sanatanadhara.com/rebirth/

Reading is Preferred Over Listening #Books
Reading is Preferred Over Listening #Books
This week’s Indispire prompt asks reading a book vs. listening to audio recording of a book, which was would be preferable.
In India, we had a culture where events were transmitted by word of mouth. Such a tradition used to be known as “shruti”.
It is believed that Rishi Veda Vyasa had dictated 100000 slokas from memory for Lord Ganesha to note down.
Historically, since time immemorial,…

Written by Wild Bill on The Prepper Journal.
Editors Note: A guest contribution from Soma Chakrabotry to The Prepper Journal. One I have been wrestling with for some time as regular followers will remember. A touchy subject perhaps in a world overrun with PC morality in the place of a backbone but one that has merit and deserves to be aired, and preparing our families for the realities of the real world is basic to prepping and corporal punishment reflects the realities of the real world, the one outside of the internet, video games system, safe-spaces, and the make-believe of TV and the movies.
When I was 11 years old I had a friend who’s room looked to me like the inside of a Toy’s R Us. He had every toy I think I had ever seen. While playing in his house he used a word kids shouldn’t and his father immediately banished him to his room as punishment and told me to go home. All the way home all I could think about was his “punishment” because my parents believed in and practiced corporal punishment. I don’t know what kind of adult he became but I still considered him lucky as a child as any kid would have loved to be banished to his room full of toys.
The only edits I have made are to the grammar/readability and flow of Soma’s excellent work.
We may have heard from an elder You need a spanking” or “there have to be consequences” perhaps from a caring employer over a mistake at work. For some it reminds us of childhood days when spanking was a part of our relationship with our parents, disciplining us to learn the knots of the world, to instill that there are consequences to our actions, sometimes immediate ones, sometimes with the addition of a physiological “worry period” in anticipation of the punishment created by the words “just wait until your father/mother gets home!”
When Society Defines Rights and Wrongs
The practice of spanking a child dates back to the Biblical ages and The Bible even advocates the practice of spanking as a safe methodology for reprimanding a child, without infliction of harm while at the same time, becoming a mode of imparting discipline. Spanking is a sharp flick of the hand or wooden–paddle held with the hand on the buttocks of the child. The idea is to make him or her feel the pain to understand that discipline has been broken and it needs reprimand with the buttocks being the usual point of contact, though slaps on hands can also instill a similar message. In my opinion strikes anywhere else are a problem and should be avoided.
According to some psychologists, spanking is embarrassing for the child because before inflicting the sting it requires baring the buttocks, that is, removing the clothes and then imparting the sting. Your call, not required in my opinion.
However there are those that believe baring the buttocks is a psychological method of helping the child come out of embarrassment and actually delivers a cathartic effect in the child’s psychology. Whatever the reality the truth is spanking is still considered a safe method of child reprimand all over the world.
It should be remembered that spanking is a private affair of disciplining and should be practiced in private with the child without any third person being present – even his or her sibling. Using the occasion to set an examples for others (siblings) by letting them watch is open for discussion between the parents as to its drawbacks vs its benefits. One has to remember that every child has prestige, a self image that we do not want to damage and peers can be cruel. The moment we break the privacy, not only does the child becomes shy or rebels, but the effect of spanking loses significance as the punishment becomes more central to the child’s memory than the act that brought it about.
There should be set rules so that the child learns to recognize what is acceptable and when and does not normally break the law to get the spanking. To establish disciplines parents must formulate some code of conduct and make it known to the child verbally. They should be sternly told what is not at all acceptable and that the violation of such conduct will call for reprimand in the way of a spanking. Parents need to articulate lines such as “at no point of time shall I accept any lies or false statements from you. ” Parents’ personality plays a great deal in determining the discipline of the child. A lofty personality, as in one where the parents sets the standard that they are the parent and not a friend, means that the child knows when they are serious and does not normally cross the stated boundary line, but if they do a spanking is to be expected because they broke the code.
To keep the gravity of spanking it should not be used too frequently and used only when the matter is serious and warrants the disciplining. There should be no false threats given to the child. If threats are given and spanking not practiced, the child will develop the habit to take the threat casually and refrain from disciplining himself/herself since there are no real consequences to their actions. Hence it is always advisable to speak less of spanking as a threat as to practice it in reality.
The age group that is fit for spanking is two to four years old. This is because less than two years the child is innocent and does not commit any serious indiscipline which requires spanking. When the child grows more than five, he/she may not fear spanking anymore and needs some reinforced, stricter form of punishment, a removal/time-out NOT in a room filled with toys and distractions. This the Indian Pundit Chanakya has also told in his Sanskrit sloka. In fact he had told very nicely how to behave with children of different age-groups, a lesson which is still taken by masters as a golden rule of parenting/teaching.
Those who are dead set against spanking must realize that the child of the age group two to four only understands physical threat as a mode of disciplining. This is because their self-esteem is not very well grown and matured. With the fierce world laying its prey on child victims, that children often do not understand, the child must be made fearful of some method of immediate punishment which prevents him or her from venturing into the wilderness without the knowledge and guidance of parents. If children are not taught limitations, they will experiment which can be dangerous for them. Wild experimentation can become a trap to rob away their innocence or ruin them. Sparing the punishment is most of the time sparing the safety and guidance to childhood.
However, children are intelligent and sensitive; they must also understand the spankers right intention in disciplining them. Spanking works best when it is given out of unconditional love. Some spanking memories may become the treasure of the child when he or she grows up to a self-reliant matured man or woman, relishing the days of childhood van-guarded by parents and teachers. To be curt and courteous, because little kids also demands courtesy, the spanker should at some point of time make it clear that the next time the child must discipline himself so that such a situation can be avoided. It is natural that maybe at that point of time the child will cry some serene cries and want to relax on the lap of the spanker melting in his mind the little dynamites of remorse and complaints he or she has formed about the spanker.
A word of caution which should be strictly adhered is that no sweet caring nanny or grandma should try to save the child and stop the spanking because it demeans the estime of the spanker in the child’s mind, undermines his/her authority and gives the child the liberty to continue his or her childish menace without the fear of being reprimanded. Being the cause of sparing the rod is actually putting the child in the threshold of a danger called indiscipline and this can often lead the coveted child astray.

Boosting Memory with Ayurveda
Tumblr media
Ayurveda is a popular version of treatment with natural components. Around the world, there are many traditions and cultures where Ayurveda is famous and many people still depends on them for their overall wellbeing of health.
Ayurveda, a natural system of medicine, originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. But Ayurveda treatment is not for curing any diseases, this is to promote good health or to boost our lifestyle in various versions. It’s based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Its main goal is to promote good health, not fight disease. But treatments may be geared toward specific health problems.
Some components of Ayurveda are special for boosting memory. Ashwagandha and Turmeric both are helpful and beneficial to increase the memory level. Ashwagandha or Withania somnifera is also known as Indian ginseng. Apart from its use in helping to reduce stress and help improve vigor, it is also helpful in improving memory. Ashwagandha helps to rejuvenate the mind and body. This helps in strengthening the nervous system, thus improving memory.
Turmeric is used in Ayurveda to balance all three doshas, vata, pitta, and kapha. According to Ayurvedic textbooks, Turmeric is known to have various medicinal properties, which are mentioned in the following sloka.
Also, researchers have found that a compound in turmeric, the spice that gives curry its golden color, could help to improve the mood and memory of older adults. A twice-daily dose of curcumin, found in turmeric, has been found to improve memory and mood in older adults. Some researches even showed that turmeric is capable of preventing and curing the primary stages of Alzheimer’s.
So, if you want to improve your memory level or if you are facing troubles remembering something important, you may start thinking about sharpening your memory. And for that, Ashwagandha supplement or Turmeric supplement will help you to the point.

A tiny little school for special children in a remote country side in India offered prayers to Regan Russell. During my narration of the story of this beautiful soul, some kids had tears brimming in their eyes. They didn’t understand how can anybody punish someone who showed only love for fellow creatures. There was a talk on the meaning of Veganism and sustainability for about 20 minutes. And then we all observed a minute of silence We all lit candles in memory of Regan and prayed for her peace - in the form of a Sanskrit Sloka “ Sahanavavathu” For celebrating the learning of veganism as a new concept in their lives. It's troublesome to match the rewards one can acquire from learning abroad with the rest. The experience can change your perspective from being native to world and your attitudes to international. Not solely that but you will likely acquire memories and friendships to last a lifetime.
Curiously though, one of many largest barriers inflicting students to decide not to research abroad, is that they imagine it could be too expensive and or too troublesome. The abroad students who do decide to study abroad and utilise the companies of an training agent are sometimes very stunned at how straightforward it was to prepare, and also at how affordable it may be.
The next data is a helpful and can likely present some good tips and advice for prospective abroad students trying to examine overseas. Although the next information might be useful, it's endorsed that students see a professional education agent to ensure they obtain up-to-date and present study abroad recommendation tailored to their specific needs and circumstances.
Tumblr media
Why examine abroad?
There are lots of reasons individuals select to study overseas:
* Language acquisition - The world market place is shrinking and many companies now search for or require staff that can communicate a second language. For college kids in Thailand or Asia the place English is a second language, with the ability to communicate English can be a significant advantage in the aggressive labor market. Not solely is having the ability to speak a second language similar to English vital from a career perspective, but it is also invaluable from an actual world perspective.

Gaining information by examine practices exists in the world since time immortal. Human civilization has its roots in the development of knowledge base via searches and researches. DR SOMA GHOSH PADMA SHREE VOCALIST- BENARAS GHARANA IS THE MOST TALENTED SINGER OF THE TIME
Interviewer:
How did music come your way Soma Ghosh ji ?
I inherited music from my mother, Smt. Archana Chakravarty a vocalist of Senia gharana and my first guru. Even while in her womb, I would rest happily if she sang! As a small child I would play, but would run to her lap as soon as she started teaching her students. At the small age of 4 yrs, she heard me sing and thereafter started training me. This started my musical journey!
Shehnai Samrat Bismillah Khan ji was your mentor, any unforgettable memory that you would like to share with us?
Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan was not my “guru” but definitely my mentor… he was like the Goldsmith who cut the raw diamond out and presented me to the world. He encouraged and gave me the wings to fearlessly fly in the musical horizon!! So many memories with him… the best I may say is his ‘manglorie black topiee’ that he wore for our first jugalbandi. He said, “Duniya ko Mai kaise kahun ki hum kitne khus hai … Mera manglorie topi, Jo Mai apni jawani mein pahenta tha, kahegi ki Mai Dil se yeh jugalbandi Kar Raha Hoon”
When he came to the auditorium for the jugalbandi, he was wearing his usual Gandhi topi… My heart sank on seeing the white topi. I bowed and touched his feet to take his blessings before the show. As I looked up, he was wearing the Black manglorie topi. My heart sang and all fear left me. He said, ” Tum Sher ki tarha gao, Mai tumhare piche piche rahunga!!”
Such was his greatness!
Tell us about your journey from learning music to getting title as Gandharva Kokila.
I have learned Hindustani classical music from 4 gurus. Smt. Archana Chakravarty, Shri Narayan Chakravarty,(both of Senia gharana) Shri Chittaranjan Jyotishi ji of Gwalior gharana and Smt. Bageshwari Devi of Banaras gharana. After my marriage, when I settled in Mumbai, I met Ustad Bismillah Khan sahab. And I overnight became what I am.
Baba…I mean Ust. Bismillah Khan, gave me the title of ‘Kashi Kokila’ at the Swarangana Sangeet Sammelan. But, during a concert for the Mumbai Rotary club, Vipin Reshamiya, the famous musician and also the father of music director, Himesh Reshamiya, gave me the title of ‘Gandharva Kokila’ – This helped me culminate into what I am today and the name stuck ever since.
Who has influenced you the most in Sangeet gharanas.
Every Gharana has its strong points. I got musical depth & flight of imagination from Senia gharana. From Gwalior gharana I got emotional rendering in my singing and Banaras gharana rounded up my entire musical upbringing. I must say that I got the best from all the three Gharanas!
Tell us about your Parampara concerts to help conserve the Indian culture through music. How did you develop this concept?
Naushad Ali, the legendary music director and Ust. Bismillah Khan were discussing the dire condition of Indian musical instruments, many of which were becoming endangered. Naushad ji, entrusted me with the great responsibility of trying to save these endangered instruments… This started my Prampara series. The then President, Hon Dr. A.P.J.A. Kalam strongly supported me in this noble cause, and came for the inauguration of my first 3 day music festival.
Tell us your voyage with Bhavanjali ?
After my training had reached a certain level, Guru Pt. Chittaranjan Jyotishi, inspired few of us to start performing before an audience. For this purpose, we formed Bhavanjali, a musical platform for all of us. Our first song & dance drama ran in to financial problem and taught us the importance of marketing. We learned the harsher realities of life. But thanks to my elder brother, Shri Amitabh Chakravarty, and our grit, we managed to keep Bhavanjali going for a few years. But after a few years, I got married and then had to shift to Mumbai.
You mesmerized your audiences with pliable voice that enables you to take the Taar Saptak without a falsetto note, how much did you have to practice to achieve this?
‘Taar saptak’ is a very beautiful note that can be achieved only after dedicated practice over years. My mother and her guru-bhai, Shri Narayan Chakravarty, made me practice this  for years.
Why music should be compulsory in every school? And could you tell us about your efforts in helping Indian classical music reach to maximum number of students and the younger generation.
According to APJ Abdul Kalam Sahab, without music, humans are no different than animals, and I wholeheartedly agree. It is our culture that separates us. Music has a great de-stressing effect on humans. Kids today lead very stressful lives, competition is increasing and their lifestyles are getting more and more hectic, but their increasing dependence on fast rhythmic western music keeps them perpetually excited- on the other hand, singing and practicing Indian classical music is a form of yoga, the breathing techniques and vibrations help calm you and make you healthier. Earlier in our school days, we used to have several extra-curricular activity classes in which we had poetry, song dance & dramas. Gradually these classes vanished from the curriculum and students were burdened with only heavy studies. This has to change.
I then undertook several performances across Uttar Pradesh through Spick Macay and reached Ragadari singing to the students. Through my  travels, I realized that Folk music across North India was now skewed, bordering on double meaning vulgarity! This pushed me to approach the Ministry of Culture with a project on Indian folk music and spreading awareness about it in several schools and colleges. The Ministry welcomed my proposal and I started reaching out to the students. I performed in major States and invited singers and dancers from adjoining States. The students loved each performance, their vehement appreciation was evident when the students at each school then performed an impromptu folk dance recital!!
I am truly grateful that God has given me the means & opportunity to serve the cause of Indian music, especially folk music, in which the roots of classical music lies. I am very glad that the Education Ministry has woken up and trying to re-induct such extracurricular classes that de-stresses the students and imbibes our cultural heritage in them.
You have launched many music albums, which one is your own favorite and why?
You might have noticed that I first try to steep myself in a particular form of music that I plan to record and then done my recordings. When I was steeped only in Raagdari, I sang in duet with Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan and there are two very popular albums with Times Music. Some beautiful solo renderings of Ragas on HMV.
Then came a phase of folk music. I recorded several Thumri, Hori & Kajari albums.
Naushadji had made me promise that my next project should be focused on Ghazal. “Aap je gayeki mein Maine Begum ki rooh payi hai Somaji. Aap Ghazal jaroor gayein!” But I had to take my time and imbibe and perfect the finer nuances of Ghazal gayeki before I could record myself. As I was recording my first Ghazal album ‘Ishq’, I was heartbroken to learn that Naushad ji had passed away. The album went on to gain tremendous popularity and I dedicated the album to him.
Simultaneously, several religious channels approached me to sing Bhajans for them. Sanskar channel regularly broadcasts my Bhajans and Sanskrit sloka albums. I feel immensely indebted to my listeners when I find that most of my albums are at the top of the charts in each genre.
When can we see you as playback singer for Bollywood films? When I was steeped in Indian Classical music, my friend, Himesh Reshammiya, had asked me to sing several of his compositions. Then, I was at a stage in my career that prevented me from branching out of classical music. But I did sing one song for his movie ‘Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye’, which had Thumri ang rendering in the song. But now I’m at that point where I’ve established my classical ground and I’m very open to film music, if it fits my music profile & my taste.
Apart from music, if given a chance will you ever join politics?
I will do whatever it takes to make sure that Indian music is saved (preserved & propagated) in it’s full glory. For that if I have to join politics – so be it!
What is your plan for the future?
I was entrusted by Baba, Ust Bismillah Khan Sahab and Naushad ji with the responsibility of creating a ‘Sangeet Gram’- a gurukul that adheres to the traditional Guru Shishya parampara of imparting education in music, where a Guru teaches aspiring students whilst also saving endangered instruments and gharana traditions- be it instrumental, vocal, or dance- both folk and classical. We will audio and video record the masters for our archives for future reference for the generations to come, so the art form survives. We have already equipped ourselves with a recording studio with video cameras for the same. If all goes well, we will be starting Sangeet Gram by this time next year.
What is your message to our readers?
I wholeheartedly believe in the therapeutic effects of Indian classical music. In fact, after Chota Khayal, I researched on the psychosomatic effects of music on human beings. My request to the readers is to make music a part of lives, to listen to music when they can, and to live healthily!!
This reminds me of something that happened recently. After a concert at NCPA last year, a man came forward to speak to me. He told me he was a Commander in the Naval forces. He was stationed in a submarine and had suffered a stroke that paralysed him. He then found solace in Ras Barse, a live recording of my jugalbandi with Baba, Bismillah Khan Sahab. He listened to it every day for 7 years and recovered without any surgical intervention. He found strength in it to get better, to overcome his illness. He is now hale and hearty, and continues to serve the country.
Another thing I want to tell my readers is that folk music, our Lok Sangeet, has in it the roots of all forms of Indian classical music. It is fluid and ever evolving, accompanying every aspect of our lives, being equally bonded to our cultural heritage.
However, I find it alarming that this very folk music as a part of movies, the largest way of reaching the masses in my honest opinion, is losing its essence, it’s lyrics are bordering on being vulgar. These ‘item songs’ are warping our perception, moving us away from how we need to perceive women, taking us away from an ideal society. If we lose our moorings, we lose who we are. As I traveled across India for the ‘Bharatiya Lok Sangeet’ series, I targeted schools and colleges and interacted with thousands of students, so that I could present to them folk music that not only entertains but also educates- it makes us better humans. It brought me immense gratification to note that they not only appreciate our heritage, but also want to learn more about it. They just need to be exposed to it, and that responsibility falls on us.
How did you feel after getting the Padma Shri award?
In the beginning, I was just happy… But gradually I understood that I have added responsibilities. I have to work harder to save our Musical/Cultural heritage and also save the endangered musical instruments of my country. This a never-ending task as our senior gurus are all getting older. In fact, we have now to take urgent care of our Gurus in order to save our heritage.

Reading is Preferred Over Listening #Books
Reading is Preferred Over Listening #Books
This week’s Indispire prompt asks reading a book vs. listening to audio recording of a book, which would be preferable.
In India, we had a culture where events were transmitted by word of mouth. Such a tradition used to be known as “shruti”.
It is believed that Rishi Veda Vyasa had dictated 100000 slokas from memory for Lord Ganesha to note down.
Historically, since time immemorial,…
