It's a hundred percent proof from champions of truth, And if you feel you need spirit I'll bring back your youth. Relax your mind, and folks unwind, And be kind to a rhythm that you hardly find.

Montell Jordan - "This Is How We Do It" 1995 New Jack Swing / Hip Hop-Soul / R&B
Montell Jordan's chart-topping debut single turned out to be such a timeless banger, man. And as Def Jam's first ever R&B single, it sampled another legendary tune from the label's catalog: 1988's "Children's Story," by Slick Rick, which he not only sampled, but also showed tribute to with a short rap verse, while doing his own impression of The Ruler's British accent:
Once upon a time in '94 Montell made no money and life sure was slow All they said was 6' 8" he stood And people thought the music that he made was good There lived a D.J. and Paul was his name He came up to Monty, this is what he said "You and Oji are gonna make some cash Sell a million records and we're makin' the dash"
So, when Montell confidently declared that he would "never come wack on an old school track," know that the old school track that he was specifically referring to there was "Children's Story."
I wonder how many DJs have played both songs back-to-back? Probably a lot 😅.
Music video directed by the great Hype WIlliams.

Richard Martin Lloyd Walters (January 14, 1965) known as Slick Rick, is a rapper and record producer.
He rose to prominence with Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew in the mid-1980s. Their songs “The Show” and “La Di Da Di” are considered early hip-hop classics. “La Di Da Di” is one of the most sampled songs in history.
He became the third artist signed to Def Jam Records. He has released four albums: The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, The Ruler’s Back, Behind Bars, and The Art of Storytelling. His music has been sampled and interpolated over 1,000 times, in dozens of songs by artists, including Eminem, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Beastie Boys, TLC, Nas, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Black Star, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, MC Ren, Montell Jordan, Tech N9ne and Color Me Badd. He has become one of the most-sampled hip-hop artists ever. Many of these songs based on his samples went on to become hit singles.
He has been a VH-1 Hip Hop Honors honoree, and About.com ranked him #12 on their list of the Top 50 MCs of Our Time, while The Source ranked him #15 on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time. He has acted and cameo-ed in 10 movies and videos.
He makes an appearance as a playable character in the video games Def Jam: Fight for NY and Def Jam Fight for NY: The Takeover.
He was born in the southwest London district of Mitcham to Jamaican parents. He was blinded in the right eye by broken glass as an infant. In 1976, he and his family immigrated to the US, settling in the Bronx. At Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Music & Art, where he majored in visual art, Rick met Dana Dane. The pair became close friends and formed the Kangol Crew, performing in school contests, parks, and small local clubs.
He married Mandy Aragones (1997) and he has two children. He and his wife have donated about a dozen items from his collection to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
