Tree Shape

The branches of the tree go on in different directions. I will achieve this organic flow by using Lucy’s technique of soaking the paper in hot water then scrunching it. This way, the paper creates natural creases that I can cut around to reveal the more natural looking branches.

The main trunk will be made using a similar technique from Nikolai’s activity last week. The technique is referred to as sliceforms, where many pieces of paper inserted into each other provide the structural support and form of the shape. These may also be scrunched and scraped to give the model tree some texture.

The shape of the top part of my tree is illustrated at the second photo above. I will cut a shape similar to the drawing and scrunch it, to again, give a more organic shape. I will fold the paper many times and cut small bits to create holes where light shines through within trees. This hopefully achieves random and more natural openings as opposed to appearing artifical and planning where to cut the holes. The edges will reflect the leaves by creating curved and sharp-edged cuts, similar to how the edges look on the photo above.

I will be using PVA glue to first, glue the branches to the ‘leaves’. Then, i will create a + cut in the middle of the ‘branches’ which hopefully fits the + shape that the main trunk will have at the top. I may use glue just to make sure the branches do not fall to the bottom. Finally, the trunk of the tree will be glued to the park model by creating tabs at the bottom. This will help to give the tree some structure as it tends to lean to a certain direction. This leaning direction can be achieved by making some sides of the sliceform trunk longer which will end up pushing the shorter side when it is placed on the surface.

This stuff will be so useful for future projects and modeling, but for now it'll just hold scraps on my desk.

Orthogonal Polygon Pop-Ups

In this section, we assume the polygon P is orthogonal, i.e., every edge of P is either horizontal or vertical. To handle this, note that for any pair of adjacent stripes, there must be at least one vertical line passing through the (strict) interior of both stripes. We call this a bracing line for the stripe pair. The subset of the line contained in the stripe pair is called a bracing segment. For each pair of adjacent stripes that do not share a vertical bar, we add a bracing segment to the linkage, creating a sliceform joint where the segment intersects with the boundary between Zachary Abel et al. 5 (a) The stripes induced by extending all edges horizontally.
