been thinking about the implications of the watcher dlc and the potential dynamics this sets up for the ancients/benefactors & the iterators.

(rambling below cut)

i started thinking about this because of the while-not-confirmed-but-basically-canon idea that the echo (aka, OA! OA! OA! dude) was named "spinning top" pre-ascension. this is implied by their file name being called "ST" and their theme in the recently released OST being called spinning top.

it made me think about what this could imply for ancient naming conventions, our first confirmed ancient child being called a 1-subject name? and our oldest confirmed ancient (17 axes, 15 spoked wheel, etc.) having a name consisting of so many titles it takes up a whole paragraph? i believe ancient names were expanded upon depending on age and/or status, as all of the other ancient names are composed of 2-subject phrases.

while this is an interesting idea on its own, it also made me think about iterator names, and how those tie into this theory.

an easy answer would be that the iterators were akin to the benefactor's children, being their "gift to the world," as claimed in the exterior pearl. but it's noteworthy to mention that iterators, despite being created to live much longer than any ancient or benefactor, permanently have a name associated with being young.

i think this implies some egotistical tendencies from the benefactors (shocking, i know). how they created a living organism purely made to serve them, and later on house them, only to give it the same respect they would a child.

this, and taking every precaution to ensure that the iterators could never escape their creators (unable to leave the superstructure, unable to ascend, you get it), really leans into the idea that the iterators were less like gods and more like tools for their creators to use as they deem fit.

a gift to the world, as long as you stay in line and do as you're told.

decided to replay rain world start to finish before the watcher comes out!!! goodbye for the foreseeable future

talking (just rambling, really) about the end game region of the echo ending, spoilers ahead!

-> please do not share information from the second ending of the game; i haven't played that far yet and would like to experience it for myself.

surprisingly, i haven't seen anyone really talk about how we got our first ever look at the world before the iterators.

in the spinning top watcher ending, our end game region is ancient urban, a region in which there is no rain timer. at first you could assume this is because you're atop an iterator structure, but the presence of sewers and old style shelters* could say otherwise.

*these shelters are only ever seen in outer expanse & ancient urban, so it can be assumed that these were an older model of shelters (assuming that downpour lore & watcher lore are connected, which is not confirmed as far as i'm aware).

this ending was incredible in terms of lore -- we get to see things only hinted at before now, while still not having full confirmation on a number of things. i think it was a fantastic way to keep the mystery of the game intact, while giving us a bit of fan-service as well.

think of all the things we now know for certain about the ancients: their heights (no, not the giant shadows lmao), the masks, the void baths, their voices. incredible, honestly. i cried for 30 minutes after the ancients reveal i won't lie (only made worse by spinning top's ending).

but anyway, nothing much to take away from this. i’m just being sentimental about this game lol
