Track 07 - Give

Give is such a delightfully easy song to attribute a POV to because it’s a duet. There’s clear switches as to who is singing each verse/chorus. Sleep is imploring Vessel to give in to his temptations and impulses while Vessel mirrors that Sam language saying that he does, in fact, want to give in — although the way Vessel uses the exact same phrasing sounds almost like he’s Hypnotized?

They give such clear characterizations of themselves here that get echoed in so many other songs: “You take the dark and carve me out a home” shows up again in Are You Really Okay - “I raised you in the dark / Caught you reading by the sunlight”. And Sleep refers to Himself saying “I am the shadow / you’re a passenger” which we see again in Granite when Vessel says “I was more than just a body in your passenger seat”. Sleep also once again refers to Vessel as being light, while experiencing dark impulses; which, as far as I’m concerned, is what the whole damn discography is about.

But then at the end of each of his choruses, Vessel still says “If you want to give”, displaying that little bit of hope that maybe, just maybe, this relationship could be more equal, that maybe Sleep could be vulnerable and love him back. Meanwhile, Sleep is over here plotting Vessel’s destruction saying he won’t fight fair. Ouch.
