Everytime I think it can’t get worse for me with “Star Trek”...
Ugh, that first “Star Trek: Coda”-Novel is so bad, it makes me wish they would just have let the Pocket Universe die without trying to give it an ending. I mean, yes Disney just cancelling the Expanded Universe and de-canonizing every Novel, Comic and Game ever written made me quit “Star Wars” and made me regret a good part of my fan-life, but if this is the alternative ... well, no but thanks.
The worst part is that it is “Star Trek: Picard” all over again. Every fan, who is here for anything else than Picard and some TNG Nostalgia is treated like a second class citizen. I mean, why promote this as a Crossover Series, if the first novel bascially only is for TNG-Relaunch Novel Fans? Not even “Titan” is in it, so why promote this as Picard, Riker, Sisko and Dax and their ships banding together, when this is not happening at all? (For reasons, I will get into later).
It seems like the second novel focuses on DS9 after all, but as a DS9-Fan, who read the first novel it’s like Icheb in “Picard” for Voyager-Fans all over again, but he got to be at least a boy in the fridge for Seven, and it was “only” Icheb, but here ...
SPOILER ALERT They just go an kill of Ezri Dax like she is just another Pocket Book Universe Supporting Character and not a Main Character from an actual Canon-Show! They make the greater tragedy of T’Ryssa Chen dying than Ezri and Dax dying! And, yes, it is a TNG-Novel (even though - again! - the lie about that everywhere), but when they killed of Janeway in another TNG-Novel back then it was a big thing and not an afterthought with her as one of many casulties. Granted, Pocket Books Ezri Dax has not much in common with Canon Ezri Dax at this point, but still ... they would never pull that with let’s say Geordi in a DS9-Novel, would they? It’s bad enough the whole Crossover seems to be “Let’s slaugther as many of our characters, that we investeted a good part of the last two decades of ST-Novels in, as possible, even though the Multiverse is ending and Our Timeline is probably  going to be earased anyways”, but giving a Canon Character this treatment ist just beyond wrong. Sorry. I mean, feel free to do with the Pocket Book Character what you will, that’s in your rights, but this just isn’t, if it does not get the space it deserves. And if this was supposed to be a “Anyone can die”-Moment, why put on in an Universe-Ending Storyline? They stakes can’t get any higher than everyone dying and that is the fucking plot, so why do it at all? SPOILER ENDING
And apart from the senselss slaughter this novel was hundreds of pages of Wesley Techno-Babbeling Time Travel Mechanics combinded with a Jean-Luc Picard-love fest. Not a single interesting moment there for anyone who is interested in Wesley as a person instead of Plot Device or anyone whose favourite Trek-Character is any one but Jean Luc Picard.
I can’t believe this is supposed to be a love letter to the Pocket Book Universe, because frankly it feels like is was written by someone who actually hates it. Dayton Ward can claim he wrote that book, I refuse to believe it, even the worst David Mack Trek-Novels are usually better than this and Dayton Ward’s Trek-Novels always were much much better than this one in the past.
So, I hope this series gets better in the next two books (but I have my doubts), but mainly I am just done with the whole “TNG is the only Trek-Series that matters and Picard is the only character that matters”-attitude of all those so-called fans turned authors, who then claim to write for the whole fandom but only every shit on DS9- und Voyager-Fans. It’s all right to only write for TNG- and Picard-Fans, but if you do that don’t use the characters from the other shows! It is as simple as that.
So, no waiting for the translation did not pay off and my gut-feeling about “Coda” not being something I would like was totally spot on, at least for the first novel, but I fear it won’t get better.

Star Wars Visions
Ep.9: “AKAKIRI”
Tumblr media
As a Jedi (Tsubaki) is fighting a band of thugs, he is rescued by an exiled princess (Misa) and her two guides. Together they travel to the city, to help Misa reclaim her throne.
They infiltrate the palace and we have a glimpse of their past, when he served under her father. They are then confronted by her aunt, a Sith who usurped the throne and killed Misa’s father. Tsubaki and her fight, but he’s defeated. In a fit of rage he slaugthers the guards, just to discover that one of them was actually the princess. As he despairs, the darksider tempts him, he accepts and swears loyalty to her.  She then brings Misa back to life and he follows the sith, leaving a confused and distraught Misa behind.
With a more stylized animation, not my flavor, but fluent and with personality, great lighting and atmosphere. The palace looks amazing as it blends japanese architecture with the grand structures that define the Star Wars temples and Sith tombs. This episode has an interesting ending, very different from the other stories, that leaves untapped potential for a continuation.

#rallysurf #pearl_jammers #jeremy_nailing #in_class #today As remembered in chess-school, Je-remy was always the worst. Despite his great losses, his cornered positions, he wasn't the telepathic chess-player that couldn't sacrifice yet another of his 'fake friends'. They say he started his career like a dwarf, with a motto to express at the start of every 'game'; "-Prepare to be boarded!". A famous quote from TV/cinema-screens of today modern needs. This time someone (who once named the top-position-uniform in the world-chess-games 'the bo-mb', same as 'the black pearl' among pirates from the carribeans or as 'the ghostship' in children's cartoons from before) used it in case something was a-woken (Godmother has her E-woks)... ...like The Godfather, without his Little Mermaid/Sea-maid in his 'eye-sight', looking like a "Great White" (shark) in oceans storms or scary as a monster in Jaws (the movie) - that 'bo-mb' or 'Black Pearl' will go right in, like a disolvable tablet/throat-pill to "clean some up". Now, that 'pill' has shrunk, demands ownership of The Godfather's private suite (Captain's Suite) and a back-up-team is sent in to check how the hell Je-remy is doing, in his so darkened class-room and super-long session ─ where demands of "Remy!" is the only thing heard from one corner and one very persistent title-holder... ...and stripped of all glory and honor his obsession in his rival + "Remy"-demands is NOT much hope for the back-up-team, where a police-commisarie (or a couple) descreetly comes 'dancing in' ─ undercover, and looking like ragular sailors, in an honorable harbour-barfight ─ just to check into the scoreboard (or the truth) in Je-remy's reports back to his own police-district, from once he came. With Je-remy's own plans (or his son's) of tree-paneling (some kind of 'fancy-up' his own funeral-casket, I believe ─ as he was planning to bury someone he was in a "fight" with (or against). It has been reported (in the darkness) that police-commisarie is sending men he barely know himself, to befriend Je-remy ─ but that can be a desillusion from a 'Dark Lord'... ...to be continued (when money isn't out). PEARL JAM - JEREMY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS91knuzoOA - - - Time is 20.13, the same date - and I have recieved a greater donation of €20.00 up north of the river, close to VIA Di S:t Lucia (tiny.cc/viastlucia) by one 'supporter' with family. I'll do my laundry tomorrow (smell really bad) so I went through Carrefour Food shop south at Torquato Square (tiny.cc/torquato) to buy some cleaning detergent for tomorrow and some milk for immediate 'cool-down-liquid'. The chest has an higher temperature ─ creates a fever-temperature I mentioned before, constant 39'C body temperature. It makes you 'witter' ('erode') by vaporising, in Hell on Earth. - - - Continuation of previous text: ...that knows how to do 'swift rocades' in hidden spaces of a long night-session/barfight like the one described above. Making the revolving-door/swing-door (like on a wild western saloon) in a Croquet-/Bocchia-games most Holy Ground ─ the 'double-frame' in the center courtyard ─ might fool the fool itself, if he's just 'strecthed-out' a bit ─ like the giant jelly-rat he is ─ and 'force-fed' into his 'other end'. 'Je-remy's speaking', in class today. "Pearl Jam", might be his favourite musical group/band ─ much emotions in their music. Describes even the smallest jelly-rat's most inner feelings, after entering such a strange obsticle but a must-pass-through gateway on their life-course. The album "Ten" was Pearl Jam's 'global-break-through' ─ and seeing "Je-remy", in his chess-career in such a album's collection of songs, is knowing he is no computer, like 'Deep Blue'... ...he's just like everyone else, even when power that corrupt (over-/high-power) really corrupts a mind ─ and brutality going against all rules & regulations ─ and finally end up against the butcher and everything fades over to a 'slaugther-chess' instead, where even 'Geils' (as Je-remy himself is one certain example of), are entitled into be a "Danish Whore"/"-Prince" or the "-Feature" (in one of my simple songs from down the river-bank), with it's 'golden' Choco-ladde'... "reaching down".

Five years ago in December, Woods of  Ypres’ frontman and Thrawsunblat’s drummer, David Gold, tragically died in a car accident. So it’s fitting to review some new material from a band he was involved in. While Woods of Ypres split up, Thrawsunblat, a band founded by ex-Woods of Ypres guitarist Joel Violette, continued and released their third studio album (and second without Gold) back in june. The vinyl version which I am going to review was released at the beginning of December 2016, nearly half a year after the CD release,  via what appears to be the band’s own label in collaboration with Broken Limbs Recordings. Since the vinyl was not available through a european merch I had to order directly from the band which added a ton of shipping costs – and in this case It was worth it!
Quick Facts:  Artist: Thrawsunblat Album: Metachthonia Version: 2LP, Limited Edition, Winter Sky (white/blue swirl and clear with blue haze) – Discogs Link Label: Ignifera Records/Broken Limbs Recordings
Quality/artwork: Let’s start with the good – the LP’s are among the best looking of 2016 in my collection (and I bought roughly 200) especially the clear with blue haze second LP. The white/blue swirl reminds me a lot of Blood Music swirl releases of the past. This being a non heavyweight vinyl release actually adds to the looks this time. The spindle hole is cut out perfectly, the stickers are well aligned, the records are neither warped nor off-center. Great quality pressing.  The records come in a plain black paper sleeve unfortunately and not in anti-static ones.
The gatefold however is another story. While the quality is pretty good (although I received it bent, a risk you have to take when ordering overseas) the whole artwork is not very appealing (to me). I usually like nature as cover art (see Negura Bunget – Tau) but this looks like a random image in the woods with a bright flood light, a photoshopped sky and some instagram filter put over it. The back of the gatefold is black with the track list in  a hard to read font and the bonus tracks in another font. The inner gatefold is a grayscale image with the lyrics printed on it. Due to very little space in between it looks rather cramped. All three images could easily be from three different albums.
Metachtonia looks like a patchwork. Colourful cover art, grayscale gatefold, black back, blue/white record and clear/blue record. It’s a bit much but fortunately I do not care, as the music is a completely different story!
Music quality: The album is definitely among the better sounding releases of 2016. It was mastered for vinyl by Garry Brents of GAB Recordings. The sound quality is excellent – There have been a lot of issues with the DR Offline Meter lately so I won’t be able to provide the correct rating this time. I got a lot of confusing readings like the lossless version of the album (which comes with the album via a download code) having the same FDR Rating as the MP3 and Streaming version (FDR of 5) while the vinyl version showed a rating of as high as 13. Apparently there are some issues with the connection from my turntable to the line in of my computer as the analysis in Spek (see pictures below) suggests. Nevertheless – the vinyl version seems to be on par with the losless flac version of the album. At least that’s what my hearing suggests. The streaming version (Spotify/extreme Quality) and the MP3 version (320bit) sound less dynamic and worse. When comparing this album to other high quality releases like the FDR reissue of At the Gates – Slaugther of the Soul or Moonspell’s recent reissue of Irreligous the quality is roughly the same. So an excellent release in terms of sound quality.

Vinyl in Spek
The music: Thrawsunblat managed to make a stunning album which stands out in a genre where many bands sound alike. There are passages reminding me of older and newer Woods of Ypres, Agalloch, Winterfylleth without plain copying them but rather weaving those influences into a very distinctive and unique sound. The cuts between harsh singing and the slower, almost peaceful clear vocal parts create an atmosphere I have only experienced on AHAB’s – The Giant so far. The folk elements are refreshing and have nearly nothing in common with the usual folk influences in metal. This album is definitely in my top 5 of 2016 and I am really looking forward to any future releases of Thrawsunblat.
Up next:
I know I’ve said in my last review that I’d ditch the up-next part. But in this case I already know what my next review is going to be about. As I finally got my hands of the recent Spinefarm/Candlelight reissues of the Emperor albums I will finally be able to compare “In the Nightside Eclipse” to the awful Back on Black reissue I reviewed last year.

Judas Priest – Better By You, Better Than Me Als die beiden Teenager James Vance und Ray Belknap 1985 Selbstmord verüben wollten, war der Schuldige schnell gefunden. Heavy Metal, insbesondere Judas Priest und ihr Song „Better By You, Better Than Me“.
