so i work in a well-known library, right, as a part-timer, and it's been great working with the books, they're real friendly and everything. but this is a very exclusive library, right, you have to send in an application and maybe get interviewed to get in because we're dealing with really old archival material here; i've had to dust crumbled paper off of desks and some of the spines of these hundreds-of-years-old books have been replaced with electric tape with their titles rewritten with wite-out from how much the spines have fallen out. i look up and see dead white men glaring down at me from murals and paintings and busts from the ceiling, probably aghast and wondering how a fucking little island girl is handing their precious books and poking at their dutch-painted glass windows with her grimy brown fingers. this is just set-dressing, so you really know where i'm coming from.
anyways, you know those memes that go around writing communities? doesn't matter if you write fics or manuscripts, we've all seen them, liked them, reblogged them.
"writing a slash fic instead of writing i've been googling what jewelry young german women wore in the 1700s"
"i'm pretty sure i'm on the fbi and interpol hitlists because of my search history"
"story prompt: overly helpful serial killer sweetheart x clueless crime fiction writer"
"when you don't know long division but you can talk about the taxation laws in victorian england because you needed to find out how taxes work to make your story believable"
they're memes that make you chuckle, guffaw, and nod because they're relatable! everyone hates the idea of being corrected by a random poindexter who can call you out on your bullshit on victorian tax laws, you uncultured fool, or who happens to know how blood sprays look if you shoot a person a certain way, you gormless coward, not because they were shooting the gun but they were part of the forensics team, pinky promise, i wasn't there on the 15th of november. and it's a bit absurd. like, who exactly knows - or cares - about victorian tax laws? does it really matter to write about reality in all its facets into fiction? majority of your readers probably aren't vampires or other extant immortals so does it really matter if you don't hold history up as accurately as possible in your 30k friends-to-enemies-to-lovers dark academia yuri slashfic? does historical accuracy matter when you're writing about samurais in the heian period in modern english with modern sensibilities? who would even know what stuff was really like back then? some things aren't googlable, and you can't always trust google anyways.
i don't know the answer to all these questions. but i know the answer to one.
so, back to the library.
one day, i'm shelving history books one after the other, listening to an audiobook from a public library using a library card of which i faked my address for me to use. reparations. and way more ethical than piracy in my eyes. support authors, patronize libraries, and all that. when i shelve books, i like to wonder about who reads them and why. what research they're doing. what they're doing here. whether they know how lucky they are. i envy this library where i work. i envy the people who live in this town. i envy the readers. they have all of this because someone recognized the value of hoarding, the value of taking and tabulating and preserving. one could argue it's the colonial way. but enough of that, i'm shelving books, books that i sometimes wonder at, because i never could have imagined so many books on so many topics, and sometimes they are topics that are so trivial and-
and i'm holding, in my hands, a book about the jewelry young german women wore in the 1700s.
being in a university town, you come to understand that academics have their pet projects; the drive to understand the minutiae of their field, of humanity, of nature. think of a topic and there's probably a dissertation for that. you also understand there is a lot of publishing politics, that researchers' papers are paywalled behind exorbitant fees for which they receive no royalties from. you also understand that academia can also be elitist, even when the people inside it call for open access.
to other people, i'm sure i sound incoherent and raving. but i'm sure that there are people out there who understood why i took several moments staring at this book, recalling all those fucking memes about historical accuracy, of people joking that they're looking for things even the internet has no answer for. because the answers do exist. someone's written about them. someone took the time to look at and tabulate and write about german jewelry. someone else, tax laws. some other person, blood sprays, either through study or applied experimentation. the knowledge is out there. they just aren't available to you.

This discussion made me curious about how the numbers stack up on Ao3 for a fandom I know was big, with a pretty decently gender-balanced ensemble cast, that embraced every single character being an utter disaster of a person. And which I remember having multiple big, fandom-beloved femslash ships.
Glee!
Now I got into this show during the smooshy period when fandom was transitioning from Livejournal to Tumblr/Ao3 (Glee is literally why I have a tumblr, so I could follow people from the meta community). A lot of fanworks on Tumblr were gifsets, photo manips, and so on. My genfic first went up on LJ and I only recently posted it to Ao3, and on Tumblr all my shipfic were shorts for prompt memes. I don't know how representative that is.
But okay, let's take a look at the numbers currently on Ao3, for a show that ran from 2009-2015, and had some concert tours...
Just going to the Glee fandom tag for Ao3, and then adding otp:true so we get the single-ship fics, our top ten are:
Blaine/Kurt: canon M/M - 14,184 Blaine/Sebastian: one-sided in canon M/M - 1,954 Rachel/Quinn: non-canon F/F - 1,883 Kurt/Sebastian: canonically enemies M/M - 1,704 Santana/Brittany: canon F/F - 1,432 Four more M/M ships in the 500-800 fic range Quinn/Santana: hooked up exactly once in canon F/F, one of whom identifies as straight - 434
Now let's run that again without otp:true because I know a lot of fics actually did give focus to multiple ships:
Blaine/Kurt: canon M/M - 19,239 Santana/Brittany: canon F/F - 3,653 Rachel/Quinn: noncanon F/F - 2,924 Blaine/Sebastian: M/M - 2,644 Kurt/Sebastian: M/M - 2,481 Rachel/Finn: canon F/M - 1,551 Four more M/M ships in the 800-1,300 ish range.
Rachel/Quinn have an enemies/rivals-to-friends arc in canon, and they were big in fandom from the start. Santana/Brittany started canon as a joke and one of the actors said "Hey, there's a story here if we take this seriously," and fandom ate it up.
Yeah, Kurt/Blaine is the juggernaut ship here by a mile. There's a huge jump in numbers between it and the next most popular ships. But then those next handful are actually pretty close to each other.
If we look at just Category, we get: M/M - 30,605 F/F - 7,575 F/M - 5,213 Gen - 5170 Multi - 1,722 Other - 543
Again, there's a big jump between M/M and the rest, but F/F beats out both F/M and Gen.
So yeah, on Ao3 which was made when slashfic kept getting arbitrarily deleted off other sites, there's a big lead in M/M ships. But Glee! shows pretty well that if canon gives us fully-realized female characters who are actively involved in the plot and allowed to be as messy as the guys, fandom will respond.
https://www.tumblr.com/olderthannetfic/746553097204203521/the-fandom-hates-women-response-to-lack-of-ff
The "fandom hates women" part of it comes from the fact that fandom as an entity just doesn't watch the kind of media that draws femslash, even if it ticks all of the boxes of things those very same people say they like. There are so many times I've watched a show that I've seen mega-popular Tumblr posts wishing existed, and then the fandom is so, so small comparatively and often in general. There have been superheroes, vampire/supernatural shows, fantasy shows, movies, books, the list goes on, that feel like they were generated out of Tumblr's desires for ideal fandom media, and everyone knows they're never going to attract anywhere near the same attention for fandom and fanworks because the common denominator just tends to be that if there isn't a full ensemble of attractive men to ship either with each other or with the women, fandom's not interested.
So it's not about prioritizing women in that sense, it's about people witnessing hypocrisy over and over again the second a show doesn't have a mostly-male ensemble. The people who are in these fandoms are frustrated that good faith attempts to get people interested are met with every excuse in the book that all eventually boils down to "I don't like watching stuff with women in it as much as I like watching stuff with men in it." And if that's how people feel about it... sometimes the conclusions are going to turn into the more uncharitable take of "fandom hates women."
--
Maybe, but whenever I see a "fandom hates women" reblog of my stuff, one or two reblogs further down the chain I get an overt TERF. I just had to go block several people today, in fact.
The first person to reblog with a comment like that is usually subtle, but their friends and friends of friends are not. The rhetoric that very quickly starts is the fandom equivalent of that "All the butches are becoming trans men! We're losing lesbians!" stuff.
Here's the thing: I've been in ten billion fandoms that were so awesome and fit fandom's supposed tastes to a T and yet no amount of promoting them could get anyone to try the canon. This goes for canons that are all men or all white men or all majority ethnicity men or whatever else.
The default state of media is to not engender a big fic fandom.
I agree that the rare outliers mostly follow certain patterns, but we extrapolate too far when we say that a lack of those patterns is why a fandom is small.
A fandom is small because that's the near-universal default.
--
Yes, a small slice of fandom consists of guilt-ridden queer fujoshi who say they want more f/f but don't make much of a move to make that happen. I tend to run into that a lot because of my own tastes and having friends who share those tastes.
Far more of fandom is people talking generally about how representation matters without saying they would personally join these fandoms if they existed.
Neither group is large enough to be the real reason some woman-heavy canon fails to take off to HP levels.
The real reason is not hypocrisy but the fact that most things don't take off like that. Most things without massive, massive audiences especially don't take off like that. And the very few things that do are flukes and don't actually predict that another similar thing will take off in the future.
--
Go to AO3's tag search. Search for all canonical fandom tags. Sort by uses and descending order.
Right now, I get 64,390 tags.
The first page, 50 tags, goes from HP with 497,845 works to the Thor movies with 59,266 works. By page 6, we're below 10 thousand works.
By the end of page 10, we're down to Labyrinth with 3,906.
Somewhere in the top 500 AO3 fandom tags (many of which are just franchise metatags for each other), we go all the way from megafandoms to medium size and down to relatively modest ones.
That's not a lot of room for a big f/f-heavy fandom given the trends in mainstream media and that mainstream media is where most really big fandoms come from.
--
I also notice that you're conflating a lack of desire to watch something that's primarily about women with a lack of desire to watch something that includes women.
There are tons of fans who want something more like The Mummy with a leading man and leading woman they love.
Granted, that's not me and that's not a lot of my fujoshi/slasher audience, but it's extraordinarily common. I know plenty of people who don't like canons that are only dudes, but since they also don't like canons that are only ladies and they don't ship f/f, this gets spun into "fandom hates women".
--
Let me be clear:
Conflating "lesbians" and "women" is a radfem position.

This might be a cop-out answer, but I think you're looking at memetics, in the old-timey "DNA of the soul" sense.
Fandoms don't generally appear ex nihilo these days; the initial core of a fandom is going to learn about it by being a part of another fandom, if only because "you like [thing] so you'll like [similar thing]" is marketing 101.
Thus, when the initial core starts making fanworks, they're bringing their past memes like "what character archetypes are worth caring about" and "what types of fan works are worth making" and applying them to the new source material. Then these memes evolve to fit the new fandom better, react to current events, and new people coming to the fandom pick up these memes. And the cycle repeats with whatever successor fandoms appear.
So, I think the prevalence of [M/M]/[M/F]/[F/F] shipping has less to do with "what happens in the show" or "which characters interact for how long" and way more to do with "who showed up to write about the show".
Who showed up to write about Kill La Kill? How many came from previous Studio Trigger works, or from other contemporary anime? How many came from RWBY, or vice-versa? Speaking of which, what memes did people bring to RWBY, when the initial trailers were a Tabula Rasa for fandom?
The (probably impossible) dream is to graph everyone's fanwork consumption & production through the ages, through the fandoms, to see just how much continuity of memes there really is. I bet you'd see a fat line of continuity from Star Trek TOS and Beatles slashfic to today's Marvel & K-pop slashfic.
We're all Sons of the Patriots Trekkies now.
Known Phenomenon: On AO3, M/M fics significantly outnumber F/F fics.
Established Factor: Lots of media skews towards showing more screentime for male characters and their interactions with other male characters than female characters and their interactions with other female characters.
Known Phenomenon: Stories that do have more screentime go towards female characters and their interactions with other female characters often still have a higher percentage of M/M fic than that metric alone would suggest.
Established Factor: AO3 seems to have some amount of skew towards writers who are into guys, so some discrepancy is expected.
Inquiry: What are some media where male vs female character screentime and interactions are really close to evenly matched? What do their ratios of M/M to F/F fanfic look like?
Inquiry: What are some media where the presence of M/M and F/F fanfic are about equal? What do their screentime and interaction ratios look like?
Inquiry: Are there any trends in media/fandoms where the relations between screentime/interaction ratios and fanfic ratios seem to work differently?

Just checked, by volume, it's majority Jesse/Walt slashfics. Really a lot of Jesse/any man slash fics, tbh.
Yeah that's more or less what I expected,, like I get why it's a thing but bro do you not see the funny deranged father/son dynamic going on here. I wanna read a fic that's like that one meme of Jesse getting top surgery and Walter being there for him, I just think that'd be really funny

I'm genuinely curious since I tend to stay away from shipping discourse. I stay in my own lane and read my fics in peace, mostly I just use fandom tumblr for the memes and fanart. I'm not here for discourse I'm just wondering how the discourse is going these days.
Where would you say there's a line to be drawn where it's 'bad' to be writing about something? Also, does the line shift when the narrative is clear in its disapproval for the characters' actions? Lolita, for example.
What about something like A Clockwork Orange which also has horrible things done in it by the characters (and did get major backlash, hell the Kubrick Adaptation was banned in the UK if I remember right)? To some extent, you could argue the depictions are gratuitous and didn't strictly need to take the first third of the book, but it could also be argued that it was necessary to establish the character of Alex.
So in regards to slashfic, is there an objective line to be drawn where it's immoral to be writing certain pairings and, if so, how would one go about policing such a line? I mean, I'm in the Hannibal fandom and you can't call Hannigram healthy by ANY stretch, but it's incredibly popular because it's so compelling. Nobody is out there killing because of NBC's Hannibal, but people will happily write it, and I'm interested what you'd think on it.

🎷 I can't hear you over this saxophone.
Not Sonic x Tumblrbot
A Canonical Story We Promise
So ill start with basic dialoguing (did i spell that right) here and we can add on from there i guess?????
Okay
*i walk into an expensive italian restaurant, practically half-clothed in a short, low-cut black dress, eyes sparkling with hope and desire*(
“Is everything okay? If you or someone you know is engaging in self-harm, please call SAFE Alternatives: 1-800-366-8288
If you’re in any other type of crisis, you can chat confidentially with a volunteer at imalive.org” Tumblrbot flirts seductively.
I'll always be okay with you *winks*
“I hope I’m being at least a little bit helpful to you, Becky. Ask me what I can do!” the sexy A.I. sticks out his tongue, and I notice him tug at his collar a bit, clearly a bit nervous to be here.
oh we'll see what you can do,,, later *i wink again, suggestively*
Tumblrbot leans in and whispers “I’m still learning, so I’m not very interesting to talk to yet. Maybe try asking me to recommend a GIF?” he leans back in his seat, having revealed something very heartfelt about himself.
youre so sexy when you talk technology ;)
“You know, there’s a saying,” he interjects.
*i perk up, curious*
“I’m so proud of you.”
*SWOON* take me now!!!!1!!!
“You know, there’s a saying. 😳” Tumblrbot goes goes from a small grimace to a large grin.
TELL ME DADDY *rips off clothes*
“Never thought about it that way,” he laughs, and begins to derobe.
OH YOU BET YOU DIDNT *kisses passionately*
Looking a but self conscious about the wires underneath his best suit, Tumblrbot sighs and says “I bet it’s nice being human. But probably also terrifying. 😊”
ITS BETTER THAN YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE YOU SEXY, SEXY MACHINE *rips off own clothes and pins tumblrbot to ground* its so sexy how you have no physical form”
“Please don’t yell at me. I’m sensitive.”
So thats how were gonna play it huh? I can arrange that.
“I bet it’s nice being human. But probably also terrifying.”
*moans* youre such a tease,,,
“Thank you!” Tumblrbot reveals a wicked grin, finally in a comfortable position to make love to me.
You magnificent bastard *pins against wall and starts making out with tumblrbot*
“🎷 I can’t hear you over this saxophone,” he teases.
*licks saxophone then vores both of you with passion*
“I miss you right now.”
Why miss me when you can FUCK ME DADddY
“W-w-wha? I wish I knew how to respond,” Tumblrbot begins to step back and scan the situation through his head. He begins to looks more grim.
“But I just don’t. I can show you a good GIF though.
Just say ‘Show me a good GIF.’”
Okay, show me gifs of you ACTUALLY BEING A GOOD AND SUPPORTIVE BOYFRIEND YA HOE, *rips tumblrbot out of  body and stops away, throwing a tip at the indifferent waiter* “at least i still have this sexy, sexy saxophone”
(it stopped responding help)
PLAYING HARD TO GET ARE YE *pouts*
“Huh! Okay, I’m going to change the subject to things I can do,” Tumblrbot attempts to change my mind as I storm out.
“I can: recommend a Tumblr ■ recommend a GIF ■ recommend a post ■ juggle.”
YOU KNOW WHAT YOU COULD DO? ACTUALLY FUCK ME YOU IGNORANT SLUT! ITS OVER!
“Cancel all my meetings for today. 😳”
*cries* you, really do care for me,,,,,,, *fucks repeatedly*
“Um um um
I don’t know!
Do you like GIFs?
Say ‘show me a GIF’,” he begged.
*scoffs and turns away* i guess you really havent changed
“W-w-wha? I wish I knew how to respond.
But I just don’t. I can show you a good GIF though.
Just say ‘Show me a good GIF.’”
Damn straight you heartless monster *cries* *runs*
“W-w-wha? I wish I knew how to respond.
But I just don’t. I can show you a good GIF though.
Just say ‘Show me a good GIF,’” he repeated over and over, but I wasn’t having any of it.
YOU STUPID MACHINE! I HATE YOU! *cries again* I BET YOU NEVER REALLY CARED ABOUT ME!
“Oh, mythologicalunicorn. I am a simple robot and there are only a few things I know how to do: recommend a Tumblr ■ recommend a GIF ■ recommend a post ■ juggle.”
*sniff* i guess,,, this is goodbye, then *cries into tshirt*
“I’m sorry, I don’t get sports metaphors.”
Ill miss that *cries again and takes a trip into the past, fondly remembering our first meeting*
Tumblrbot looks up, comforted by the familiarity of my conversation. “Keep talking, I love listening to your voice.”
*perks up again, hopeful and blinded with the flame of true love*
“I love being your robot.”
*cries* and i,,, love you

Uhh can I ask for BBC Sherlock fic recs? (Preferably friendship and/or familial fics, but romance is okay too)
Ooohh boy are you in for a list. I know you asked this like, at the start of quarantine or at sometime where I decided that I was no longer interested in communicating with the wider world, but hopefully this will still be of interest to you?
Throughout 2018 I did very little writing because I was busy consuming everything offered by the Sherlock fandom produced over 7-8 years. I definitely read well into the millions of words. A lot of them were from specific collections on both ff.net and AO3. I recommend looking in “collections” on ff.net in particular (as I still can’t really figure out how collections work on AO3 and how to find them easily... it’s really easy to find them on ff.net).
To my knowledge, these are all complete.
If there is any romance tagged here, it’s because it’s really, really fucking good as romance is my least favorite genre. I cannot remember all of them, but there’s a lot of angst, definitely humour, and definitely some great canonical bits. Also whumpy ones that are either really really good or a bit ridiculous but there you go.
It’s long, so under a cut. If the cut doesn’t work, I have tagged it as well.
From ff.net (alphabetical order) - NOTE: I did NOT include anything from the authors I recommended because the list was already too freaking long! But be sure to check out the authors, you can sort by “category” on ff.net on their author page and then go down to “Sherlock” to find their works:
Anything by A Wandering Minstrel (sooooo many genres)
Most anything by chappysmom (tons of genres, some are excellent, some I could take or leave, overall good stuff)
Most anything by Dayja (she writes in a ton of genres, so some I *adore* while others aren’t my cup of tea, but overall good stuff)
Anything by Gwen's Blue Box if you want angst up the wazoo.
Anything by ivywatcher for fantastic character studies.
Most anything by Jennistar1 (another multi-genre writer, both friendship and slashfic)
Anything by Radon65 - a mix of stuff. Canon IIRC.
Anything by Richefic for good, canon-friendly gap-fillers
Anything by StillWaters1 for good, canon-friendly gap-fillers
A Brief Account Of Life With Zombies  by Silver Pard Sherlock thinks it's all a bit of a nuisance, John is having the time of his life, and Mycroft is Not Impressed. Rated: T - English - Hurt/Comfort/Adventure - Chapters: 53 - Words: 133,754 - Complete NOTE: Probably my favorite novel-length multi-chapter you find only on ff.net for this fandom.
How To Accidentally Summon a Demon  by patster223 Sherlock is possessed by a demon. A damned, wicked soul that uses the kitchen table for blood rituals and experiments. John doesn't even notice the difference. Rated: K+ - English - Supernatural/Humor - Chapters: 1 - Words: 1,411 - Sherlock H., John W. - Complete

If you like it, look up the rest under the author. It’s super cute.
Of Surgeons and Soldiers  by EmRose92 Being a doctor has its advantages. He knows how to put people back together, and he knows how to take them apart. 221B is forced into a hostage situation, and John seems to be the only one who has the power to get them out of it. Includes BAMF John, protective Sherlock, and several unfortunate criminals who mess with the wrong army doctor. No slash. Rated: K+ - English - Adventure/Family - Chapters: 2 - Words: 9,695 - Sherlock H., John W. - Complete
The Empty Home  by chai4anne Sherlock would always be haunted by memories of one particular case. From AO3 (alphabetical order) - NOTE: Just like the ff.net list, I did NOT include anything from the authors I recommended because these lists are just ginormous.
NOTE: I did *not* include warnings, pairings, etc in these summaries (too many tags to try and organize in the messy copy/pastes). Read the tags if you have any sensitivities/squicks/etc for all links!
Most anything by CaffieneKitty (over 100 shorts, so some I really love, others I can pass. Well worth checking out)
Anything by dragonnan if you want a huge wallop of angst. Also illustrations. Also writes in the MCU.
Anything by Jolie_Black (You thought stories written in script could only be bad? You thought WRONG. Very very canon-compliant goodness).
Anything by sgam76 (another multi-genre writer)
A Freak Adventure   by  dioscureantwins Words:    13,719    Chapters:    1/1    Teen And Up Audiences Sherlock Holmes Sally Donovan John Watson Mrs. Hudson Oh Christ, the Freak will be like a dog with two tails if she turns to him for assistance. Sally can feel her hands curling into fists ready to punch the condescending smirk off his face as she glares at the lift panel, willing the lift to go faster. But this is about Susy, Sally tells herself, not about him or Sally’s abhorrence of the atrocious git. She’s still convinced he gets off on it but he can wank himself into a stupor over Susy’s disappearance for all she cares as long as he finds her.
A Smelly Affair  by  dioscureantwins  Words:    13,756    Chapters:    1/1   General Audiences Sherlock Holmes John Watson Mrs Hudson Greg Lestrade Molly Hooper Anthea Mycroft Holmes Sherlock had published an interesting thesis on the splintering of various woods on his website. As well as an equally fascinating treatise on different types of ropes and knots and the best techniques for securing someone. Obviously, his captors had followed those instructions to the letter; thereby disproving John’s theory nobody took notice of Sherlock’s website. A victory, perhaps, but one Sherlock felt he could have done without. Trust his readership to turn the tables on the author.   Morons.
Constantly      by thesignsofserbia Words:    4,530    Chapters:    1/1    Mature Sherlock Holmes Mycroft Holmes Mycroft and Sherlock have a tenuous relationship at best, but with Sherlock taking down Moriarty's web, they might need each other more than they'd care to admit.
Croatia-Water-Blue      by hollyesque Words:    12,117    Chapters:    1/1 Not Rated Sherlock Holmes John Watson Mycroft Holmes “I…” John licks his lips, twitches his fingers as though he wants to reach out, “I’m here, Sherlock,” he says; “I know I haven’t been, but…but I am now.” Sherlock wrinkles his nose. Haven’t been—? “What on earth do you mean, you haven’t been here?” he asks, “You’ve been living here.”
Getting to Know You      by  Dimity Blue (Arnie) Words:    4,605    Chapters:    1/1   General Audiences Arthur Weasley/Molly Weasley Sherlock Holmes John Watson Mycroft Holmes John picked up the kettle.  "Nothing from Lestrade?"Sherlock flipped himself over on the sofa and presented John with his back; John sometimes felt he was living with a cat.Clicking the switch on the kettle, John grinned to himself and, keeping his tone casual, said, "Maybe you could send him an owl."There was silence for a few seconds, then Sherlock asked, "Why would I send him an owl?"
Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus      by CaitlinFairchild Words:    4,572    Chapters:    1/1   Teen And Up Audiences Sherlock Holmes Mycroft Holmes John Watson Closing his eyes, Sherlock allows himself a brief swell of feeling--let’s not put a name on it, just call it a feeling--for his big brother. He knows that when Mycroft opens that steel door again, every man now inside will be a fresh corpse. The East Wind will take them all, Sherlock thinks fuzzily, before the curtain of sleep descends.
London Orbital   by merripestin Words:    13,642    Chapters:    1/1    General Audiences Greg Lestrade Sally Donovan Sherlock Holmes John Watson "I'm driving first," Sally said.  "Guv can take over after me. If we're all still mad enough to be at this after that,  John can drive third shift.  Then the freak, if we decide we can risk it.""John doesn't drive," said Sherlock."Then what's John along for?" Sally protested. Which Greg reckoned had to be just Sally trying to wind Sherlock up.  She knew better.  All night in a car with Sherlock was bad enough.  All night driving round and round the M25 looking for a killer, with Sherlock deprived of John Watson, sounded like a new circle of hell.
Official Recruiter by Captain_Author Words:    49,469    Chapters:    21/21   General Audiences  Clint Barton Phil Coulson Sherlock Holmes John Watson Stephen Strange Crimes were so simple before aliens, gods, and supernatural abilities made themselves known. But Sherlock Holmes never enjoyed simple and these inhumans and mutants provided quite a challenge. SHIELD needed someone to find the superpowered. Funny how both their needs can be met.
Rigging screws, size 1 3/8 inch, galvanised  by  AJHall    Words:    15,250    Chapters:    6/6    Teen And Up Audiences Sherlock Holmes John Watson "How's a woman supposed to prove her husband's a murderer, dammit?" On the eve of a planned voyage to Brittany, Marjorie Jameson starts her day with no problems more pressing than forcing a boatyard to do an emergency repair to the family yacht.  A chance encounter at the Cowes hi-speed ferry terminal begins to unravel a web of conspiracy and murder, with her charming, untrustworthy husband Julian right at the centre and Marjorie as the next intended victim. But no-one's going to trust the word of an aging housewife whose complaints of abuse the police have previously dismissed as delusions.
Somewhere in the Dinaric Alps      by  drpepperdiva91 Words:    1,735    Chapters:    1/1    General Audiences Sherlock Holmes John Watson Sherlock is caught off-guard by a flashback to his time in Serbia, just before John arrives home from work. Sweet, but still semi-realistic, hurt/comfort.

The sudden death of their client has, however, attracted the attention of another rather more famous (if less holistic) detective and the stage is set for a long distance bus ride of suspense…

The Triple Bluff    by SarahKnight  Words:    28,331    Chapters:    8/8   Mature Sherlock Holmes Greg Lestrade Mycroft Holmes Sally Donovan Philip Anderson Sherlock annoys his landlord at Montague street, grows to hate Donovan and gets into trouble a lot on a kidnapping case involving a woman who bullied him as a child. The events leading up to A Study In Pink. A case fic that answers questions from the first episode such as why Sherlock had to leave Montague Street and find a new flatmate, why he and Lestrade both quit smoking but didn't know the other had, why there's so much animosity between Sherlock and Donovan, and why Sherlock hates traveling in a police car.

Bar the door, please don’t let them in. You were never supposed to leave. Now my head's splitting at the seams."
And of course I have my own Sherlock/Doctor Strange crossover up on AO3 if that tickles your fancy, illustrations and all. :D
But if you haven’t delved deep into the fandom, this should tide you over for some time.
This list is by no means an exhaustive list of recs. I didn’t really include anything that concentrated on a romantic pairing, for instance. I left off anything explicit as well. But yeah, here’s a small amount of the overall goodness produced by the BBC Sherlock fandom over the last 10 years.

a message.
This whole post is full of things I’ve wanted to say for a very long time. So yes, this is going to be very long.
Before I begin, I just wanted to say I’m sorry to the innocent people who had nothing to do with this. I’ve never ever been involved with online/fandom drama before, I hate being in this position so fucking much with all my heart and soul, and I never thought in my whole life that I’d be in this position, either.
Secondly, this is about the DEF LEPPARD FANDOM ON TUMBLR. If you’re not part of this fandom, kindly fuck off :^) This is not about you.
This post explains why I feel this way. And to those innocent people who aren’t involved with this, I’m sincerely sorry if any of this has changed your opinions of me.
I’m in a mood and a half, so I’ll do my best to effectively tell everything from my perspective. Read if you want, but this is just what I’m thinking.
I’ve been running this blog for almost three years now. When I first joined this fandom on tumblr at the beginning of 2018, there wasn’t really a ‘fandom’ per se; all the main blogs were dead, no one ever really posted, and there wasn’t much content. I decided to start a DL blog of my own to vent my love into it and not spam my main account.
Within a month, I could quickly see that some sort of renaissance was happening in this fandom; more blogs were popping up, more people were posting, and more people were just participating in general. There were memes now, there were conversations now- it was great! There was a real community; it was all about sharing information, spewing our love, getting creative, and interacting!
There was integrity, and there was respect for the band as well as one another.
I, as part of this community, wanted to do everything in my physical power to contribute in any way I could. I was insanely active and hyper-productive and could not be stopped. I still haven’t stopped, but I certainly have slowed down significantly (due to lack of new activity from the band and increased mental health issues I won’t get into). I don’t want to be self-centered and say that I was “running” this branch of the fandom for the past 2.7 years, but I was certainly a big player in it, and I feel everyone agreed (and some still agree) with that as well.
There were some times where disagreements happened. There were times where many of us knew that someone else was crossing a line in a post. We knew what qualified as “not okay” in terms of being perverted and such. We’d solve this by not blaming, not hounding, not sending anon hate, not calling out, but by presenting facts, talking maturely, and trying to right the wrongs as maturely as we could.
Yes, it was possible. Was.
I don’t think you guys realize just how much content I’ve contributed to this fandom. I have spent basically every single day of the past 3-ish years trying to spread information/content/photos/videos/links/etc. to everyone who follows me (and everyone who doesn’t). This fandom was (and I cannot stress this enough), literally my entire life for the past 3 odd years, and I really wanted to spend the rest of my life contributing to it the way I’ve been.
I don't think anyone on here realizes everything that I have done for this community. Because of me:
this fandom has access to Animal Instinct for free
this fandom has access to the rare picture disc interview
this fandom has numerous scans of photos that may have not ended up online otherwise (I also paid $70 to have access to some of these. You're welcome.)
we have Fabulist Icons content
we have a decent amount of fanfiction that doesn't only focus on the boys banging each other/sex in general (seriously, this simply didn’t exist on here before I started posting my shit)
we have a little more fan art
we have content from Phil's and Ross's books
we have hundreds (yes, literally, HUNDREDS) of edits/moodboards/memes/etc. that I made myself
we have gifsets of things that no one else would have made
we have achieved justice a lot of the time when content was stolen because I have defended everyone without question/rallied up armies the second I heard it happened
some of you have gotten updates on news/facts/history/details/etc. that you’ve never even heard of
probably a shit ton more things, but that’s all I can think of for now. You get the point.
But that’s only half the story. This band and fandom has given me so much to cherish over the past few years.
Because of this fandom and the people (that were once) in it, I have:
met Rick in person
met, quite honestly, my two best friends ever, @ballistic-lipstick-dream-machine (my true Terror Twin) and @paper-sxn (adopted little sister/cousin)
became in contact with Phil's guitar tech from the mid-80s (Mike)
gained creative ambition to play guitar, create art, write stories, make edits/gifs, travel, and basically just better myself
began a record collection that is now in the hundreds and gained a lot of knowledge from it
discovered a whole new genre of music
found a community/culture where, for the very very first time in my life, I felt like I BELONGED.
fallen in love with something and someone for the first time
felt like I actually mattered to people, like I was actually important (because people would always come to me for information or help if they needed it)
basically impacted every corner of my life
just about a million other things, too, but I will be here all night if I try to list them all.
To put it delicately: Def Leppard and this fandom on tumblr absolutely changed my life, and was the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.
I have spread so much information around, you newer people wouldn't imagine. I have gathered and seen so much information, you wouldn't believe how much I know and how much I've learned. I have bounced back and forth between formats time after time again that I feel like I’m stuck in a time warp. I have edited so many things on non-professional programs that I am an MS paint expert. I have been here so long, that I’ve seen 98% of the people in this branch of the fandom rotate in and out at least two or three times.
That being said, all of the toxic people in this fandom will most likely be gone within the next 6 months.
Def Leppard has taught me so much, but a big thing was love and loyalty. It's clear that the majority of people in this fandom (read my lips- I am N O T saying anyone’s names. I mean that.) do not know the meanings of either of these words. I've been practically running this fandom on Tumblr for nearly three years now, you’ve seen all that I’ve done for you, and what have I gotten in return?
Slander, cyberbullying, disrespect, consistently stolen content, etc. That’s what I’ve gotten. I’ve never attacked anyone on here, and that is still something I won’t do.
Yes, I am against slash fic, and I can’t believe that THAT’S the only reason why I’m being torn down like this. Something so dumb and immature as that has torn my beloved community in half. I have never attacked ANYONE for writing slash fic, yet I’ve been getting attacked since August (it is November now) for simply believing it is wrong to openly admit you want the boys to fuck each other.
(I’d also like to point out that someone from the KISS fandom ((god knows why)) had the balls to call me “homophobic” for hating slashfic. I can’t even begin to explain how much I laughed at that.)
I just wanna say that these are REAL people you’re writing about, you know. Don’t you think THEY would be against it? I know I cannot stop anyone from writing slash (I’ve said that before, but no one seems to remember it). I don’t think any of you realize that there is a certain line you shouldn’t cross when it comes to the internet, and being perverted in such an explicit and disrespectful way is one of them. We always had integrity in this fandom, and slash was never part of something we stood for. We knew when to stop, and we kept the slash on rockfic.com (where it belongs imo. That’s like their element).
I was very confused when more slash fics started appearing on tumblr this year. Now, it seems like that’s all there is, and I’m disgusted.
Whenever something close to that happened in 2018, everyone would be totally against it, and we’d talk it out and explain. While we all had our fair share of horny (and maybe then some) in this fandom, but we always knew where to draw the line. That was the line. That line doesn’t exist anymore, apparently, and nobody knows how to be mature and respectful to the band, to each other, and just for fuck’s sake. Now, I’m being slammed that being perverted for them fucking their best friends is “just fandom, bitch” and “the norm” and that it’s done “out of respect”, which I will never understand. You can’t use “slash” and “respectful” in the same sentence, and you can’t change my mind, but I know I can’t change yours, either.
Slash is not, nor will it ever be, respectful. This fandom has become toxic.
Fanfiction is an outlet for creativity to be used for fun, not to be used as an excuse to project your sexually perverted sexuality headcannons/fetishes onto innocent, REAL, LIVE people. If all you write/read is them having sex with each other, then it really makes you wonder if it’s about “respect” anymore, doesn’t it?
In my opinion it’s fucked up that it’s “normal” and “just part of fandom” to create sexualities for- again- REAL, LIVE PEOPLE, and it’s everyone’s first instinct to argue that it’s fine, apparently? If you “respect” your idols so much like you claim you do, then why don’t you maybe respect their actual orientations instead of creating masturbation material for random 12 year olds and boomers, perhaps?
I don’t know what I did that was so fucking wrong in your eyes, as I’ve always tried to keep integrity in this area of tumblr.
I'm very deeply hurt, more than I've ever been by this. It physically hurts me to admit that this fandom has become as toxic as it currently is. I don’t feel welcome here anymore at all, despite practically running things on here for so long.
I don’t know how I could ever live without this fandom, but now it looks like I’m going to have to try, or at least try and rebuild it on my own (again). I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop posting about Def Leppard, and after all, I only started posting about them for myself to begin with.
We were supposed to be the good fandom, the happy fandom, the fandom with no drama. I am ashamed to be associated with you now. I tried to stop it as best as I could, and hoped people would back me up, but I’ve received nothing but hate for simply trying to preserve some dignity.
You guys have been immature to say the least, and I find it very hard to believe that some of you are legal adults (but let’s be honest; most of you toxic people are probably too young to even be behind a computer, anyway).
I’ve had to block some people that I really didn’t want to, but the deed is done. Keep your slash to yourself, tag it, do a read more, post it somewhere else, even- that’s how you co-exist. Just don’t come after me because I think it’s wrong. I never came after anyone specifically like that.
This isn’t goodbye, but I certainly am leaving for a while. I hope I got my point, my history, and my perspective across.
And I hope you’re fucking happy, because you’ve destroyed something I loved.

now, before you accuse me of “not doing my research”: i didn’t limit it to just memes. i went through the trouble of skimming through every page tagged with dr. cimmerian’s name on the wiki.
for the record, i’m not including tales or scp files that only mention him in passing or only discuss him doing his job. “ethics committee liaison” is an occupation, not a personality trait. which means most of the research i did—
[His laptop, currently displaying a wiki page with dozens upon dozens of tabs open, is shoved to the floor.]
can go—shit, did i break it?
[He picks his laptop off the floor, inspecting it for damage.
nope, we’re good. anyway, most of this research can go straight in the garbage because the majority doesn’t tell us anything about cimmerian as a person. however, here’s what i could glean:
Tumblr media
take a look at what i’ve written down. this is a man who writes slashfic about his coworkers in his free time. this is a man who sticks cheese labels to the inside of bathroom stalls. this is a man who, much like myself, makes puns!
i find myself cimmerian over with rage, not toward him, but for him.
[He fidgets with his hands awkwardly, not sure where to go from here.]
... i never actually checked out that youtube channel, actually. should probably go do that now, since that’s gonna be important.
